Siegwerk, one of the leading global providers of printing inks and coatings for packaging applications and labels, will be honoring its German-based corporate roots this year by celebrating its 200th anniversary. The family-owned business' journey began in 1824 and following 200 years of evolution and numerous innovations later, the sixth-generation family members retain ownership of the company to this day.
To celebrate, each site around the globe, which support operations in more than 30 countries, have planned Family Days, each with its own unique local flavor. The activities are designed to allow all employees to join in the festivities and share common experiences about Siegwerk while looking ahead at the company’s plans for the future. “In Des Moines, the Siegwerk Family Day 2024 event will include live entertainment, activities for children, local flavors, and guided tours of our operation in the Center of Excellence located at 3535 SW 56th St. All employees and their families will be invited to attend this bicentennial event. It is our intent to celebrate as one big family,” said Jarred Carter, Siegwerk’s President of Flexible Packaging for the U.S.A. and Canada. To be held in late September, Siegwerk Owner and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Alfred Keller and his family will join the Des Moines Family Day festivities under the motto “Let’s celebrate.”
The long history of the family business that led to the formation of Siegwerk is impressive in many ways. From the very beginning, there has been an excellent understanding of trends and the relevance of continuous transformation, which enabled the company to always adapt to the challenges of each era and strive for moving the company forward in the right direction. Initially established in 1824, as a retailer of manufactured goods, the German family-owned company entered the printing business very soon after its start. From the opening of a cotton fabric, or calico, print shop through one of the first German illustration rotogravure print shops to the largest fully automated ink production facility in Europe, the company has continuously expanded its printing expertise over two centuries. Over time Siegwerk has grown to become one of the most well know printing ink producers in the world.
The first use of the Siegwerk name was in 1911, with the founding of the “Siegwerk Chemical Laboratory” which specialized in the production of gravure inks and other chemical products for the graphics industry. This became the foundation stone for company as we know it today.
“From textile printing to publication gravure and finally packaging printing, by continuously looking for new ways to modernize production and innovate printing technologies, our family’s business has repeatedly succeeded in adopting new trends ahead of time and influencing the printing industry with essential innovations,” explained Keller.
During the 70s, the focus of leadership turned away from Western Europe where the market for gravure inks was largely saturated. During this time period Siegwerk established two production plants in the United States -- one in Lynchburg, Virginia and another in Greenfield, Iowa. As Siegwerk expanded, the printing ink industry had begun to consolidate and internationalize and in the 2000s the company began of a series of global start-ups and takeovers.
“Siegwerk’s presence in Des Moines started with the acquisition the former Color Converting Industries in 2003,” said Carter. “CCI was originally located at 11229 Aurora, Des Moines, IA, but in January 2000, opened the newer facility where we are located today at 3535 SW 56th St., Des Moines, IA. Siegwerk USA Inc. built additional space in 2018, which doubled our local warehousing capacity. In total we have 179 employees in the local area and 500 between the U.S.A. and Canada, contributing more than an estimated $38M annually to the local Des Moines Metro economy.” The company further expanded its presence in the US with the acquisition Environmental Inks and Coating in Morganton, North Carolina during 2010, always navigating through the eras with foresight and a strong feel for the market.
“Our long history shows that we have always been very successful in the continuous transformation of our business to adapt forward thinking and sustainable paths, and I am excited about what we are going to accomplish in the coming years,” added Carter. Today, the company is heavily focused on the development of eco-friendly inks and functional coatings that enable sustainable packaging solutions to actively drive the realization of a Circular Economy. The corporate culture remains deeply influenced by the company’s origin as a family business, and values such as responsibility, open-mindedness, foresight, and dedication are still held dear.
“As a family-run company, acting in line with our values has always been important to us. Of course, this also includes taking responsibility for our own actions,” added Keller. “Then and now, we remain strongly committed to making a positive and responsible contribution, not only to our employees and the communities we operate in, but also the society and the environment overall.”
From the founding of a company in-house health insurance scheme in 1843 to financial support and social projects for children in need around the world – the family’s social commitment has always been part of the company’s core values. “The driving force behind everything we do has always been the passion to drive transformation and make a positive impact,” closed Keller. “And when I see this passion in our family of Siegwerkers today, I am proud of the kind of company we have become and look forward to celebrating our 200-year journey with our almost 5,000 employees worldwide.”
“All of the team members in Des Moines are very proud of our rich legacy, as well as the identity we are currently creating. Together we look forward to building upon this great foundation while helping to shape the future of the packaging industry through innovative inks and coatings solutions for our present and future customers,” closed Carter. Father figures deserve tremendous credit for the countless contributions to their families. Their health and lifestyle choices notably impact the overall well-being of their families. They also play a significant role in modeling healthy behaviors for their children. These behaviors encompass fitness activities, dietary habits, and even digital etiquette, such as staying o the phone at the dinner table.
Parents' lifestyles significantly influence their children's susceptibility to chronic diseases like cardiovascular issues. This risk can be influenced by genetics in addition to factors such as environment, diet, education and socioeconomic factors. Studies indicate that a parent's lifestyle can shape their o spring's health even decades later. Consider these men’s health values and how you could model them to improve your health and your families’.
1. Integrate more of your values into daily life: Amidst responsibilities and work demands, it is essential to design a life that reflects your values each day. For example, cooking balanced meals and eating together as a family, fitting in physical activity throughout the week, or exploring nature.
2. Regularly see your primary care physician: One simple but crucial step is to find a primary care physician and visit them regularly.
3. Take initiative with health screenings: Keep updated with health screenings, such as the Hy-Vee Healthy You Omega-3 Index Screening Tour. During the month of June, Hy-Vee dietitians will be o ering FREE Omega-3 Index Screenings thanks to our generous sponsors Nordic Naturals and GOED. Request your free screening appointment here.
When it comes to men’s health, let’s not forget about key nutrients in your diet such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, sodium and potassium. Omega-3 fatty acids significantly reduce the risk for sudden death caused by cardiac arrhythmias and all-cause mortality in patients with known coronary heart disease. They are also used to treat hyperlipidemia and hypertension. If you are looking to increase your omega-3 intake but aren’t a fan of seafood, consider Nordic Naturals supplements available in your Hy-Vee HealthMarket. Vitamin D plays several roles in men's health, including maintaining testosterone levels, keeping bones strong, and helping with mental health. It can be found in salmon, fortified dairy and breakfast cereals in addition to supplements. Minerals such as sodium and potassium also play a critical role in men’s health. A diet balanced with low-sodium and potassium-rich foods promotes heart health benefits such as lowered blood pressure and reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. Men's health matters significantly, a ecting not only their individual well-being but also shaping their families' health and the generations to come. Fathers play a crucial role in modeling healthy behaviors and habits, emphasizing the importance of proactive health management in men's lives. Try this recipe idea in celebration of Men’s Health Month for a delicious home cooked meal that contains all the flavor without the sodium. Plus, melons contain potassium which is helpful in maintaining healthy blood pressure.

Make the most of your summertime fun by staying safe in the sun! Incorporate these simple sunscreen, hat, and hydration tips into your everyday routine to protect yourself in hot and sunny conditions.
Festivals, pools, backyard BBQs – oh my! It’s the season for summertime celebrations. Nothing can put summertime fun on ice like a sunburn! Follow these sun safety tips this summer
APPLY SPF 30. Apply sunscreen with broadspectrum protection on all uncovered skin in bright or partly cloudy weather.
REAPPLY EVERY TWO HOURS. No sunscreen is waterproof, so you’ll need to apply it more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
WEAR SUNGLASSES OR A HAT. The sun’s harsh rays can not only affect your skin but
also your eyes! Make a habit of wearing sunglasses when you are outside or driving during daylight hours.
A wide-brimmed hat is also a great shield to protect your eyes, and the skin on your face, scalp, ears, and neck from the sun.
DRINK WATER. Water is crucial to protecting your entire body, especially in hot and humid conditions when you may be overexerting yourself! If you’re dehydrated and experiencing prolonged sun or heat exposure, you could be at risk of heat exhaustion.
Proactive sun protection can help keep you safe and cool in the summer sun.
If you’re experiencing a severe sunburn, photokeratitis (UV damage to the eyes), dehydration, or heat exhaustion, visit our walk-in clinincs in Ankeny or Bondurant or our 24hour Urgent Care Clinic in West Des Moines.
