Wow, September was full of celebrations here at FuseDSM
In fact, did you know that our city was incorporated on September 22, 1851? Seems fitting that the chamber had so many large celebrations as well.
We had several ribbon cuttings including Anawim Housing, Paws & Pints, Family Eye Health Center, East Village Physical Therapy, Creative DSM, HRTLD Construction, and DMARC What a great time for members to get out and connect with others in the community.
In addition, the Food Bank of Iowa celebrated 40 years of services within our community. I can't even fathom how many meals that must mean for all of our neighbors throughout the years.
We also can't forget that Copy Systems celebrated 50 years within our footprint! In fact, they were one of the founding members of the chamber back when we were named East Des Moines Chamber of Commerce.
Our chamber also launched a brand new successful event called Flourish: Funding Ideas That Matter We listened to 3 finalist entrepreneurs present their businesses to a crowd of community supporters A fantastic addition to our event lineup in partnership with Emily Steele of Love Local.
As we fully transition into fall; and the 3rd quarter of planning for many businesses, it's important to take time to reflect and celebrate the wins. Our chamber did just that this past month, and we are looking forward to the next big celebrations of the year!

Every company has pain points; some that may be acute and go away and some that you could consider chronic. Hiring and retention is a common chronic company condition that is often overlooked and undiagnosed in the workplace. When left unchecked, it can cause serious short and long-term company health complications such as unproductive behaviors, low productivity, poor culture fits, and turnover.
Speaker Danielle Rusch will walk participants through the effects of good and bad hiring and retention practices while teaching leaders how to focus and apply healthy fundamentals to improve hiring, retention, and eventually, your bottom line.
Participants will have the opportunity to self-assess the health of their current hiring and retention efforts to then identify their specific pain points in the process to begin to make improvements in the health of their company.
Participants will walk away from this session with an understanding of their current situation and applicable tools to start shifting from chronic or acute hiring pain to healthy, competent hires and increased retention.

We envision healthy, free flowing rivers that connect Iowa’s communities and provide access for all to use and enjoy.
Iowa Rivers Revival (IRR) is a leader in river education and advocacy and is committed to protecting some of our most precious natural resources our rivers and streams. IRR works to engage individuals, organizations, communities, and government leaders in river awareness, responsibility, and enjoyment to improve and enhance the condition of Iowa waterways ensuring a quality, safe and lasting resource for future generations.
Environmental stewardship begins with environmental literacy, and they both begin with exposure. We are committed to growing greater awareness about water quality and river issues across the state by offering programs and information that connect individuals and communities to their rivers.
Flanked by two great rivers, with more than 70,000 miles between them, Iowa’s rivers and their valleys hold much of Iowa’s remaining wildness. Rivers provide many benefits and values for Iowa communities including water for everyday use, recreation, economic development, natural habitat for wildlife, and an increase in the quality of life. There are many threats that impact the condition and quality of our rivers including flooding, pollution (what you can and can’t see), erosion, and general apathy for conservation priorities.
Rivers are the barometer of the overall health of our ecosystem and Iowa Rivers Revival is working to ensure our rivers are safe, clean, and enjoyable for future generations.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) recognizes the important roles people with disabilities play in the workforce
Why do we even need a month recognizing disability employment? Because 30 years after the ADA was passed, the employment rate for people with disabilities remains much too low. The 2021 Bureau of Labor Statistics report shows a 61.8% employment rate for people without disabilities. Employment for people with disabilities is a dismal 17 9%
What can we as businesses do about it? Participate in NDEAM. It can be as simple as taking stock of where disability employment fits in your business culture
Review policies:
Ensure they convey a commitment to an inclusive workplace culture
Establish an employee resource group: Offer employees an opportunity to connect and receive support from others with similar backgrounds or interests
Show your commitment: Post positive messages about the company ’ s commitment to a disability inclusive workforce
Observing and participating in National Disability Awareness Month is great and all, but how do we really facilitate change for job seekers with disabilities?
Connect with community employment service providers, like Central Iowa Center for Independent Living (CICIL) to learn about employment supports that are provided at no cost to a business Consider alternative application and interview formats such as an audio version of any application documents, visual resumes, working interviews, or providing a project to complete Provide opportunities for job shadows, career exploration, informational interviews, or work readiness assessments Train supervisors help them understand their role in fostering an inclusive workplace, review relevant policies, the process for providing reasonable accommodations
The theme for NDEAM 2022 is “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation ” Use this October as a chance to figure out where your business fits into the equation!

Cassie Sampson, owner of East Village Spa, says that of all the benefits of her FuseDSM membership, she values the relationships with fellow business owners she’s met through our MOXIE entrepreneurial support group. One of those relationships proved to be crucial when she recently moved her spa to a new location and ran into a snag in the construction.
After significant delays in communication with the international alarm company that originally installed her new building’s fire alarms, Sampson learned that they could not supply the parts or labor in time for her to move, and potentially not before her existing lease was up, leaving her with the possibility of no location and employee layoffs.
Adam Jacobs, owner of American Alarms and MOXIE member, came to the rescue American Alarms sourced the parts within days and installed everything quickly, at a much lower cost than quoted by the large company Without the relationship formed through the FuseDSM Chamber, Sampson knows she wouldn’t be enjoying her beautiful new location today!
“Even if you ’ re told you have to use a big company for alarm work, do your research and ask if you can go local,” Sampson advises “I had no idea American Alarms could source the exact same parts, and many of the contractors I worked with were also unaware that we had a choice ”
Because of American Alarms, East Village Spa hosted their grand opening event on schedule on September 22nd Cassie Sampson and Adam Jacobs are pictured together at the celebration

Creating an inclusive culture isn’t hard, but it does take some planning and commitment The following guidelines are a starting point to assist you with common recruiting and workplace issues For detailed information on creating an inclusive culture, check out the Inclusion@Work framework from the Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN). EARN is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
The first step in this process is to write a good job description The job description should be used to delineate tasks, duties, and expectations for both the employer and the employee.
An inclusive job description should define expectations and identify potential accommodations that can enable employees to perform their job successfully and benefit all job seekers. EARN offers a guide to writing an inclusive job description.
The goal of the recruitment process is to attract and identify individuals who have the best mix of skills and attributes for the job available Ensuring that all qualified individuals including those with disabilities can take part in the process is essential to achieving this goal It is important to know where to look to find candidates with disabilities beyond the traditional recruiting processes Companies interested in hiring employees with disabilities should begin by:
Reaching out tothe local Workforce Development Board (WDB) WDBs are part of the Public Workforce System, a network of federal, state, and local offices that connect companies to the resources they need to strengthen their business and their workforce, including skilled employees with disabilities. Connecting with aBusiness Services Representative at a local American Job Center They provide assistance with recruiting, hiring or training employees, including people with disabilities who are ready and willing to work
EARN offers a list of online job posting boards that can help small businesses find qualified workers with disabilities
Customized employment strategies help small businesses identify low cost, low tech methods for improving labor effectiveness and task distribution to assure a mutually rewarding employment partnership. These strategies aid in recruiting workers with disabilities who are well situated based on their skills, talents, and experiences to meet the specific needs unique to a small business
The U S Department of Labor’s Office on Disability Employment Policy has developed significant resources, videos, and research to support employers in implementing customized employment strategies within their recruitment and hiring processes.

"I joined the FuseDSM Board in 2019 as a way to connect with the community and help provide insights into the ongoing growth throughout the metro as a whole. It's been fascinating watching the Chamber grow and change throughout the years while also providing so much ongoing value to its members The pandemic hit us all hard and Fuse was right there leading the way with messaging, ongoing advice for the small business community, and new opportunities for connections. I'm proud to be a part of this great organization and I'm excited to see what the future holds! "
With increasing prices on essentials like gas and groceries, you may want to consider revamping your budget. With that in mind, here are five budget trimming tips to help you fight inflation at home.
Consolidate credit card debt When it comes to paying off your credit card debt, it may be a good idea to take advantage of balance transfer offers that will allow you to pay them off at a lower interest rate Promotional rates on balance transfer offers usually expire after six to 18 months By finding solutions that aren't too costly now, they will help you eliminate debt over time
Refinance your home If you haven’t taken advantage of lower interest rates to refinance your mortgage, now is a good time to look. The Federal Reserve has already raised interest rates multiple times this year and has signaled more will come. Finding ways to save on your mortgage could be crucial to your financial success during high inflation. Sell what you don’t need/use Now may be a great time to hold a yard sale or to start posting items for sale online. Facebook Marketplace is a popular way for people to sell items online This can help you generate some extra cash If you have a larger item that costs money to maintain, like an extra car, you may want to consider selling it so you can cut out the extra insurance and tax payments
Cut out unnecessary expenses Examine your budget and expenses carefully. Maybe you have a magazine subscription you ’ re not reading or a streaming service subscription you don’t use very often Ask yourself if you ’ re getting your money ’ s worth It may be time to cut those out of your budget at least temporarily You should also look at small expenses If you make a daily trip to the coffee shop, those purchases can add up quickly On the other hand, cutting them out of your budget can add up fast
Change how you shop The rising cost on basic necessities, particularly grocery items, has hit many people hard. Look at your grocery list for potential changes you can make. Switching from name brand items to store brand products can provide some instant savings. You could also cut back on items that have been hit hardest by inflation. Buying less of these types of products will have a positive effect on your budget.
In an upcoming Top Five event with the Greater Des Moines Partnership, Michele Matt will discuss the benefits of a positive attitude during the interactive session. The event will focus on communication techniques, analyzing attitudes and more
Michele Matt Q+A
What is your expertise?
I’ve been told I have the unique ability to understand and inspire all levels within an organization as a strategic planner, leadership coach, team builder and mentor.
How long have you been in your area of business?
Each year since 1984, I have inspired the attitudes and actions of thousands of people around the world through customized learning experiences, dynamic keynote presentations, strategic business planning and organizational development
What is your session about?
“Staying Positive in a Negative World” continues to be my most requested program Our world changes and so often people have a hard time adapting to new situations and expectations, both professionally and personally I will share nuggets from my book Attitude: The Choice is Yours to inspire people to regain control of their life by gaining control of their attitudes
Where did the idea for your session come from?
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) has been proven to be more of an indicator of success than our intelligence (IQ) Through my career, I’ve had the privilege and challenge to observe the good, the bad and the ugly attitudes in action As Zig Ziglar said, “It’s your attitude, not your aptitude, that will determine your altitude in life ”
What can attendees expect to learn from attending your session?
Regardless of a person ’ s past or current situation, I teach people how to create joy in their journey and reach their fullest potential by:
Listening to self talk (not social media)
Seeking comfort with change (uncommon oxymoron)
Clarifying their role and prioritizing their goals
Maintaining a positive outlook (even when things don’t look good)
What value will the content in your presentation bring to the small business community?
The pandemic and its aftermath have been a rough storm for all businesses to navigate Rather than focus on day to day excuses, I teach people how to believe in the reason to try something different and the value of learning that change teaches us
How does your content focus specifically on business activity in Greater Des Moines (DSM)?
All but three years when I lived in Phoenix, I’ve lived my entire adult life in DSM. I’m so proud to call it home and a place that has inspired and supported me to operate my small consulting business for over 30 years
What are you most excited about when it comes to your upcoming presentation?
Paying it forward I appreciate the opportunity to give back to the business community in hopes that the wisdom I share will be shared with others at work and at home
What is one piece of advice that you’d give to small business owners based on your experience?
Integrity it’s never wrong to do the right thing Even if it’s a difficult conversation, takes longer or costs more, people appreciate your honest response and effort
How can interested attendees learn more about you?
Attendees can receive additional information by scheduling a 30 Minute CheckUP or contacting me at (515) 326 1908, michele@JERHRGroup com or LinkedIn Information on training workshops can be found at jehrgroup com or read copy of Attitude: The Choice is Yours to learn how to implement practical ways to communicate positive attitudes

While I appreciate the positive reframing of this neurological disorder, it still is, in fact, a disorder.
I used to champion the phrase “ADHD is my superpower ” and embraced the positive reframing of my condition. Communicating the advantages I might have in how my brain looks at a situation was an effective spin that inevitably did more harm than good.
Even though I was diagnosed with ADHD nearly four years ago, it was not until this year that I started researching the condition I have had a very challenging year; many personal and professional changes have impacted me significantly, not to mention the looming recession impacting not just myself but other speakers and entrepreneurs During my season of high stress, I knew I was missing something, but I could not quite figure out what it was Feeling frustrated, confused, and angry, I looked into my ADHD to see if that was the cause of my stress
What I found was not a superpower What I found was not something you could positively spin What I found was that ADHD” is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs your ability to regulate yourself, including your attention and your emotion ” (1)
Read that again ADHD is a condition that impairs our ability to control our attention and emotion To me, that sounds like an HR nightmare Who would want to hire someone who cannot regulate their attention and emotion?
There’s more
What I also found was that ADHD can significantly impact someone ’ s executive functions, specifically these elements: Impulse Control
Emotional Control
Flexible Thinking
Working Memory
Self Monitoring Planning and Prioritizing Task Initiation
Organization Skills
And yes, there’s more
People affected with ADHD are more likely to underperform, have a harder time keeping a job, have a higher rate of car accidents, and have a higher tendency for addictions
Again, this sounds like an HR nightmare
On the bright side, my research allowed me to make much sense of my career I could see how these factors have played into my performance or underperformance in nearly every job I have been in And on the bright side, I can see how much I have accomplished despite this condition
As we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month, I think it is important for leaders, especially in HR departments to have a full understanding of what this disorder means While I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, I am someone who carries this disorder with me everywhere I go and someone whose personal and professional life is deeply impacted by it Beyond some of the instantly googleable facts, I want to provide some helpful nuggets that I found that could give context for why some of your employees might be struggling
Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) Most ADHDers suffer from this condition because we have been told (explicitly or simplicity) all of our life that we are too much. Our emotions, thoughts, and passions are not centralized or focused; thus, they are not valuable. We develop a great sensitivity to anything that might even smell of rejection, and we will do anything to avoid that rejection. We are not being overly sensitive; we are literally recovering from thousands and thousands of times we have been reprimanded for simply being ourselves
ADHD is not about focus The name itself is a misnomer It is not that we CAN’T focus We absolutely CAN However, if we don’t have proper context, or instructions, or if a task is not aligned with our talents, we will physically have resistance to it Again, it is not that we are being lazy or intentionally avoidant Our brains are so terrified of rejection, of making mistakes, of missing details, or being wrong, that the pain of being seen as a procrastinator or a lazy person is less than what we will feel when we get something wrong
People with ADHD CAN be superheroes No, ADHD is not a superpower, but if you put us in the right place, we will stop at nothing to meet our goals. And that’s the key for you as a leader: are you putting the right people in the right place? Most ADHDers will work twice as hard and get half the results in the wrong position. Put them in their zone of genius, put them in the position where they can shine, and ADHDers will do half the work and get twice the results. They will be one of your top performers, without question.
Again, I am not an ADHD expert I can only speak from my personal and professional experience It is not a condition that I think can be spun positively It is not a condition that can be ignored And it is not a superpower One of the resources I found blatantly stated, "I would not wish ADHD on my worst enemy, ” and I agree The more I research, the more daunting it is But, given the right team, the right context, and the right support, I truly believe that ADHDers provide energy, passion, and enthusiasm that others may not ADHD may not be a superpower, but it is a different perspective and a different way to approach a situation and a goal When you lean into that for your neurologically diverse employees, you might find the results anything but typical
