From the streets of Edison, New Jersey, to the beaches of Southern California, to a skatepark on the Des Moines River, and all around the world, this is Mike's life in skateboarding.

The largest open skatepark in the nation sits right here in our city, the Lauridsen Skatepark. The opening of this skatepark brought the 2021 Dew Tour to our city. It also brought a professional skateboarder, Mike Vallely, across the country who now calls Des Moines "HOME". Join us at the November Monthly Luncheon to hear Mike's story.

The FuseDSM Monthly Luncheon will typically be held on the 2nd Thursday of every month, however, this month due to Veteran's Day, the date is moved to a Wednesday. Each month the Chamber invites a dynamic speaker to provide timely information affecting our community, insight on issues concerning the community, or inspirational stories which resonate within the community.

There is networking time prior to the start of the program and lunch being served. This is the monthly event you do not want to miss to maintain those important relationships with your fellow members.

Welcome to the 4th quarter of 2021. The fourth quarter….the time when businesses begin to look forward, build budgets and record their dreams for the upcoming year. As businesses, we continually look to finding ways to reduce our expenses, without impacting our customers (and employees) experiences.

We know our staff is the most important investment we make in our business period. And, we also know that we need to provide our employees with wages and benefits that care for their family. And, we understand the number of benefit requested by employees is health benefits 1 when they are looking to stay or go from your employment. AND, LASTLY we know it is nearly impossible to find team members to move our business forward so when we have one, we need to find ways to keep them and we need to listen to what they need

Leavinghomelessnessisnoteasyandisfullofchallenges.Frequently,mentalillnessand substanceusedisordersaddtothestruggle.Addressingthosechallengeswhileliving withoutapermanenthomeisnearlyimpossible BeforeAnawimHousingortheirson Matty,HeatherandMattlivedwithoutahomeformanyyearsTheylivedinatent,and theirsubstanceuseandmentalillnesswentuntreated.

MEET THE DREAM CATCHERS

Dream Catchers started when Des Moines native and founder, Tricia Rivas, being inspired while volunteering. Rivas would use her skills as a licensed beauty professional, along with her salon’ s staff, to volunteer with Hospice of Central Iowa, the local women ’ s shelter, and even support local veterans After seeing how this time affected the people served, she saw a need. After researching other foundations around the US, she set out in 2013 to create her own foundation where beauty professionals would lend their talents to support those with terminal or chronic illnesses and their caregivers With the help of other passionate Des Moines area community leaders, the the idea became a reality and Dream Catchers began in 2015. The name, Dream Catchers, was divinely inspired. When it came to getting the idea in motion, Rivas knew it would be called Dream Catchers and had a vision of how it would all look and come together. For all of us at Food Bank of Iowa, giving thanks is a year round state of gratitude not limited to the fourth Thursday in November. We rely on a cast of thousands to help feed hungry Iowans, and we ’ re especially grateful for your support during the most challenging period in food bank history.

Today in Iowa, 10% of our neighbors (about 48,000 right here in the metro) too often come home to empty cupboards Children represent a third of those who are food insecure. And so many others facing hunger are hardworking people, seniors on fixed incomes, and veterans who have bravely served folks who simply don’t have enough money to cover all the necessities

Last year, 8,000 people contributed nearly 31,000 hours of service to the Food Bank of Iowa. They sorted donated food, packed BackPack™ sacks for elementary school children, repackaged bulk rice and pasta into family sized portions, assembled senior boxes, performed data entry, and helped staff events. Our volunteers make magic. We couldn’t do what we do without you

Personally, I am grateful to lead a passionate team of hunger fighters focused every day on helping those who don’t have enough to eat I’ m grateful for steadfast volunteers who show up time and time again to prepare food for distribution and those who help distribute it. We hear the terms gratitude, appreciation, and acknowledgment, but what exactly do these look like in the workplace? More importantly, why are they necessary?

I’ m not talking about giving your employees a new water bottle or pen as a thank you

I’ m talking about authentic, genuine acknowledgment of personal contributions to the team and organization as a whole

What many CEOs and managers often overlook is the cause and effect of gratitude on a company ’ s bottom line

High turnover, employee dissatisfaction, poor productivity, and lack of respect are all signs of a company lacking a culture of gratitude Regardless of your industry and the products or services you provide, gratitude benefits everyone, especially your employees, who ultimately affect your bottom line

Gratitude in the workforce historically looked like, “be thankful you have a job ” Mindsets have shifted and now the workforce is participative and yearning for more than the basics Gratitude has become a necessity, not a nicety

So how do you cultivate a culture of gratitude?

Start at the Top

To really experience the positive effects of gratitude on your bottom line, you need to start at the top A culture of gratitude needs to be modeled from the owner and CEO to the managers and then to the employees

Not only does this ensure a culture and not a one off, it also eliminates questions and competitiveness between teams Gratitude is a ripple effect, like any other modeled behavior in and out of the workplace When given gratitude, others are more apt to give it as well

2. Give Acknowledgement Often

More than anything, employees want to be shown respect and know they are valued.

While fun perks like table tennis and company wide lunches are appreciated, they aren ’t the end all be all to showing your appreciation for your employees

In a time where staffing shortages are affecting so many and those who are working have had to put in more time than usual, it’ s important to acknowledge and show gratitude for what they may currently be sacrificing

While they are being compensated for this time, they still need to be recognized for what they may be giving up; kids' activities, family time, personal time, and more Things they may not get back

Showing gratitude for their extra time and support is crucial to keeping those you do have and creating a culture of gratitude And it’ s as simple as taking 10 minutes out of your day to thank them and tell them you see them putting in the work or giving them a handwritten thank you card

3. Think Outside the Box

If you ’ re able to offer a bonus, even a small one, or have competitive pay, these are great ways to show gratitude I’ ve seen more recently sign on bonuses for new hires, which is good, but how are you acknowledging those who have stuck it out with you? Can you give a bonus to these individuals?

Now that I have your attention with the title {LOL} let’ s talk about how Covid brought a lot of clarity into my personal and business life.

At this time last year, we were all in the thick of so many emotions (as Facebook likes to remind me daily with my memories). In those moments, I remember telling myself that if I didn’t keep moving forward and just became still, I would be paralyzed with fear. Most of the fear came from thinking we would lose Trixies. What would our staff do, our guests, and our family?!

Some days the fear could have had me curled up in the fetal position and wanting to give up. If I’ m being very honest, I did have a handful of those days, but it’ s amazing how strong the human spirit is when we ’ re not willing to give up. We will fight with all of our being when we believe in something, someone, and most importantly, ourselves.

through Covid hasn’t been the hardest thing

I’ ve been through in my life What it has done is brought me many aha moments. Moments that I don’t want to forget that I’ ve learned from: moments of how I want to show up in this world and how I truly want to make a difference for my family, community, employees, and the beauty industry.

Covid helped shed a light on how important our industry is and the impact that we make on our guests and our communities. I think we would have been voted one of the essential non essentials! It has also brought awareness to us personally at Trixies on areas of opportunity that we know will make a difference for our guests and staff.

I look forward to 2021 and the amazing opportunities that we will be given personally and professionally.

I have a life new motto and it reads ~there is beauty in simplicity~ I remind myself of this daily and how far we ’ ve come and what we ’ ve overcame this last year and half.

2021 IOWA TRENDS IN TALENT DEVELOPMENT SURVEY REINFORCES VALUE OF TALENT DEVELOPMENT IN CHANGING WORK ENVIRONMENT

ATW Training Solutions recently released the results of its 15th annual “Iowa Trends in Talent Development Survey” conducted in partnership with New Horizons Computer Learning Center, the Association for Talent Development Central Iowa chapter (ATD CI), and the Iowa Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) State Council. The survey, conducted between July 21 to August 20, 2021, was completed by nearly 100 respondents representing a variety of Iowa industries, companies, and organizations

Talent Development Budgets Strengthen Survey results indicate that 58% of companies expect their talent development budgets to stay the same in the coming year while almost 39% anticipate that budgets will increase. This means that nearly 97% expect budgets to stay the same or increase, while only 3 4% foresee a modest decrease in budgets. Unlike last year, no respondents anticipate budgets to decrease more than 10%. Organizations that deferred talent development activities in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic likely plan to devote more resources to develop in the coming year.

Many Employees Continue Working Remotely

Last year many employees shifted to working remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year, nearly 83% of organizations have employees working remotely. Talent development is provided to these employees in a variety of ways, including connecting virtually to classroom sessions, in person classroom sessions, e learning courses, and facilitator led webinars. The biggest challenges with delivering development to remote participants include delivering to the mixed classroom (some participating in person and others virtually), participants’ use of technology, and converting classroom materials for virtual delivery

Classroom Instruction and Online Courses are Top Delivery Methods

Last year organizations saw many employees working remotely with a subsequent increase in remote delivery. In the coming year, respondents expect classroom instruction to be the primary delivery method. In last year ’ s survey, while anticipating the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, respondents rated classroom instruction and online courses roughly equal, so this year ’ s funding represents a strong rebound for classroom instruction as the traditional number one delivery method. In descending order, other delivery methods identified include Online courses, On the job training, Videoconference, and webinars.

MANAGING YOUR DIABETES DURING THE HOLIDAYS

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Right now there are 34 2 million US adults living with diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t even know that they have it.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or it can ’t effectively use the insulin it makes. Over time, that can cause health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease. Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure, lower limb amputations, and adult blindness

Healthy eating is one of the best tools you have for managing blood glucose levels However, healthy eating can be even more challenging during the holiday season. Family gatherings and social events around this time of the year are often centered on food and drinks. The temptation to enjoy traditional holiday foods, full of fat and sugar, is sometimes hard to resist

Choose a smaller plate. Buying smaller plates or using a salad plate instead of a dinner plate is an easy strategy for portion control. Simply put, it is hard to overindulge when there’ s less room on the plate. Another tip, use the salad plate for your protein and carbs, but then use a regular dinner plate for a big salad or all of the veggies you want.

Fill your plate in this order: veggies and proteins first, then fruits, and lastly desserts. When filling your plate, start by focusing on the fiber and protein to help limit blood sugar spikes and make you feel full for a longer period of time. Non starchy vegetables are lower in carbohydrates and high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Aim for filling half your plate with non starchy vegetables to make sure you get plenty of servings

One important way to maintain your willpower and manage your diabetes during the holiday season is to plan ahead. Here are 3 tips to help you stay on track during the holidays:

Drink a glass of water before your meals. Drinking water can fill you up, and a full stomach means that you ’ll likely eat less and feel less hungry Sometimes you may also think that you are hungry when you are actually thirsty. Drinking a glass of water before reaching for something to eat can help to curb unnecessary snacking or overeating.

Everybody Wins! Iowa (EWI) is a children’ s literacy and mentoring nonprofit dedicated to ensuring children’ s success in school and life through weekly one to one reading and mentoring experiences with caring volunteers Through these ongoing read aloud sessions, elementary school children in our program are provided with an opportunity to build their vocabulary, listening skills, and confidence Through our programming, we reach children to foster their interest in reading and learning, while encouraging them to believe that they can be successful

Despite the COVID 19 pandemic, we were still able to serve our students virtually last year, connecting 535 students with 375 volunteer mentors and distributing 4,089 books to build their home libraries. This year we are returning to in person programming in schools in Polk, Dallas, and Warren counties, and we are looking for more mentors to serve students in need Research on student literacy has shown us how important the read aloud experience is for children. Most experts agree that reading aloud is the single most important factor in helping children to develop their vocabulary as well as their reading and language skills.

Research from the Children’ s Literacy Foundation has also shown that the number of books in a child’ s home is the best predictor of reading success, however, 61% of low income families do not own any children’ s books which is why we also provide our Power Read students with at least six new books each school year.

The holiday feast is arguably the most important part of the holidays aside from gathering with our loved ones. However, the feast takes time to prepare and our guests may get hungry while they wait. To avoid the “hangry’ s ” (hungry and angry) we need healthy appetizers to keep our guests munchin’ and not punchin’ each other during the holidays!

Appetizers are often just as indulgent and filling as the meal itself In order to keep the group ready to dive into the rest of the main meal, it’ s important to find ways to dial back on the appetizer portions and make healthier carbohydrate swaps. By making these changes, we will be able to provide better options to keep everyone satisfied and ready for the rest of the meal.

Our new twists on healthy starters include making smaller portions and carbohydrate friendly options. 1 (15 oz ) can Hy Vee no salt added garbanzo beans

1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

THE IMPORTANCE OF A FOUNDERS STORY

Recently, a dear friend of mine celebrated his new polo shirt It wasn't just any polo shirt; it was a polo shirt with his new small business logo proudly embroidered on the shirt. The logo and company name looked sharp, and it sparked my curiosity. What did the name mean? Why was the logo designed that way? When I asked him, he unpacked a beautiful story of his heritage, culture, family, and how all of these inspired how he sees his company serving his clients. I hung on to every single word he said.

Peter Guber, a long time film executive, and master storyteller said it this way: "For too long the business world has ignored or belittled the power of oral narrative, preferring soulless PowerPoint slides, facts, figures, and data. But as the noise level of modern life has become a cacophony, the ability to tell a purposeful story that can be truly heard is increasingly in demand " Our brains crave stories, especially in the products and services that we consume In all of our interactions, we desire a human connection.

Because of that, businesses must share their founder's stories A founder's story goes beyond the products and services that a company offers and connects us to the humanity and passion that prompted those offerings in the first place. Here are some tips in clarifying your founder's story:

What problem did you (as the founder) encounter and solve for yourself? Every business solves a problem, and every business owner sees an opportunity to solve a specific problem in a unique and meaningful way to an audience Share with your audience how you encountered and overcame that problem

2. What wakes you up in the morning? Aside from the day to day of your business, what passion lies behind what you offer? It could be your family, it could be your goals, it could be how you are serving your clients. Get clear on the passion and be willing to share it even if it seems irrelevant to your product or service.

3. How will your clients feel? Yes, feel! All products and services bring us emotions. It can be satisfaction and ease of saving time, or it can be a newfound sense of confidence in oneself. Identifying your clients' feelings allows you to connect human to human, not just human to the product.

4 Don't overcomplicate

There are countless storytelling strategies. While many of them are effective, many of them can also muddy the waters and get us stuck. The key in sharing your founder's story is to be concise and straightforward, speaking from the heart For example:

I remember growing up and being unable to speak up for myself. I didn't have the tools or mindsets to say what I wanted to say out loud. When I accidentally walked into a high school speech and debate class, I found the tools to support me in this journey, but something was still missing

Tools were not enough I wanted to feel confident, not just look confident My journey in public speaking, storytelling, and emotional intelligence training sparked Speak Up Stories to build confident, powerful, and joyful communicators

There are certainly a lot of details missing from my journey in that short synopsis, but that version shows my audience that I have been on the same journey and am passionate about building those skills to speak up within them. And, like all stories, this took some trial and error and adjusting depending on the audience.

No matter what business you own, what product you offer, what type of clients you serve, there is no denying the human connection that draws us in and keeps customers coming back

HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE

Here we are, less than 60 days from Christmas, and I don’t know about you, but that raises my stress level almost as much as 3 toddlers in a Toys R Us

Since we have already had more than our share of stress with a Pandemic, supply chain problems, staff shortages, and trying to decide which booster shot we should or should not take….let’ s see what we can do to lower your stress over the holidays

Could you consider dialing back your expectations this year? The fewer expectations we have, the happier we will be Perhaps focus on time together with friends and family and less on gifts.

The sooner we start the conversation about holiday plans, gift ideas the better. If you haven’t already, you can delegate some of the usual holiday tasks like putting up the tree, making the latkes, decorating the outdoors, or planning a potluck for the family meal.

You could include the gift of time together, experiences will create lasting memories. Shopping might be more fun if done with a friend or family member. Be sure to buy local and support our small business owners And then stop for a bite to eat at one of Des Moines’ s fabulous restaurants.

Please take care of your health and mental health by: Getting sunshine and exercise, eating healthfully, drinking more water and less alcohol, taking a break from media and social media, taking regular walks and deep belly breaths, focusing on things you can control, and being more playful and hopeful

Most importantly, be good to yourself, give yourself and others grace and hold on to your sense of humor

Before we know it, we ’ll be celebrating a New Year and 2021 will be in our rearview mirror

HELP FILL A CUPBOARD, NOT JUST A TABLE

One thing nearly all faiths agree on is the need to share food with those who have none It’ s why, for the past 45 years, the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) has been committed to working together to solve hunger and food insecurity in our community Last year, the DMARC Food Pantry Network assisted over 58,000 people in Greater Des Moines through our network of 14 partner food pantries and 30+ mobile food pantry site November is always the busiest month of the year for the DMARC Food Pantry Network, and Thanksgiving is a big part of the reason why. People’ s budgets are stretched thin, and many food pantries offer additional food in November to make sure people can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with their friends and family. At DMARC, we ’ re all about treating visitors to our food pantries with respect and dignity, and we recognize how powerful it is for people to be able to enjoy a holiday meal with their loved ones

But we also think it’ s important to recognize that hunger and food insecurity exist every day of the year in our community. That’ s why this Thanksgiving, we ’ re asking for your help to fill a cupboard, not just a table. Joining DMARC’ s Apple a Day Giving Club by setting up a monthly gift to DMARC is an easy way to make sure you ’ re helping to provide food to people facing hunger and food insecurity year round

Reading is an important part of all our lives and it's even more important when you share quality time with your kids during this exciting but stressful season! Most importantly providing that nurturing environment to read will help them to create a lifelong healthy habit.

When you watch a movie with your family most usually leave with a similar viewpoint, but when you read a book with your family it can be fascinating to see all of the different viewpoints that arise. This can help you to better understand how your family sees the world and what speaks to them. It also gives you the opportunity to course correct with your children, helping them to see concepts they may have overlooked.

And sometimes, we just need some peace and quiet. Reading with your family is one of the only times you get to sit down and enjoy some quiet time away from work or other distractions. Reading during this busy holiday season can be a great way for parents, grandparents, siblings, etc..to bond over books without having to spend money on entertainment, not to mention keeping a quiet home.

Reading helps us teach life lessons that prepare them for adulthood, one of the most important lessons for them will be how to control their own attention and limit their screen time. Reading will also help them develop their imaginations as they read about faraway lands, different time periods, and even mystical fantasies that could not possibly exist. There is no better way to learn to control your mind than by exploring the depths you can create there.
