WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH IN DES MOINES BY ERIN HUIATT OF DES MOINES PARENT Women's History Month is celebrated in the month of March. So many women have played a huge role in American history. There are several ways you and your family can celebrate the contributions of women over the years. Here is a list of fun ways to honor and celebrate Women's History Month in Des Moines.

On the first Friday of every month, FemCity Des Moines hosts a coffee connection for women to come together, connect and uplift each other. FemCity is a community dedicated to arming you with everything you need to grow and live a happy life. Learn more.

Iowa Women's Hall of Fame Not enough people are aware of the extent of women's contributions to society, whether past or present. To highlight women's heritage and recognize their contributions, the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women (ICSW) established the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1975. Each year the ICSW and the Governor welcome four women into the Hall of Fame, paying tribute to them and setting them forth as role models for others. Spend some time learning about women who have contributed to Iowa history.

Plaza of Heroines at the Iowa State University The Plaza of Heroines is a mosaic of bricks and granite pavers that forms the entryway to Carrie Chapman Catt Hall on Iowa State’s central campus. The center of the plaza features a large granite paving stone honoring Carrie Chapman Catt, a distinguished alumna of Iowa State’s class of 1880, leader of the U.S. women’s suffrage movement, crusader for international peace, and an advocate for the expansion of women’s rights throughout the world. Surrounding that stone are smaller granite pavers and bricks that honor more than 3,900 women who have made an impact on individuals, families, communities, and society.

Walk across the Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge Located in Downtown Des Moines is the Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge. This bridge links the east and west sides of Des Moines at the northern edge of the Principal Riverwalk loop. The bridge features two separate pathways - one for walkers or joggers and one for bicyclists. The bridge is lit by colorful lights that reflect onto the water and truly make it a beautiful site to see in Des Moines. Take a walk across the bridge and think about a woman in history who has made an impact on your life.

We meet struggles and challenges head on, focusing on what they have control over and harnessing their super powers. It is very common for strong, independent women to try to do it all. I consistently hear from women who struggle to say “No” especially if it is something they are very good at. This leads to over extending themselves and the potential for burnout and resentment.

THOUGHTS FROM DONNA MILLER MANAGING PARTNER - MILLER, ZIMMERMAN & EVANS, PLC

We’ve come a long way from the days when a woman needed a husband to sign for her business loan. We’ve even come a long way from the days when young, female attorneys (myself included) were asked if they were the court reporter when they walked into the room.

There was never a shortage of women to talk to about their experiences. Other female attorneys, the members of NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners), Fuse, and FemCity were great resources. Some clients mention that they think a female attorney will provide them with a strategic advantage in their divorce. In a few cases it might make a difference. But I explain that the judge does not care if your attorney is male or female. The judge cares that your attorney is prepared and succinct. And the client should care that their attorney is attentive to their case and responsive to their concerns. Regardless of gender.

I saw a tweet this morning that speaks to how I feel:

TRY THE "FROZEN FOODS CHALLENGE" BY: ANNE CUNDIFF, RD, LD, FAND CORPORATE HY-VEE DIETITIAN

Build a balanced plate with convenient ingredients right from the frozen department. Aim to combine a protein, a grain, a vegetable and a fruit at most meals for a variety of nutrients. Frozen foods are a big help for planning highly nutritious meals with a low level of difficulty. For a fun challenge, let’s walk through what a meal prepared from all frozen food products might look like. When shopping in the frozen department, it can be helpful to compare nutrition labels. Keep in mind things like protein and fiber will help you feel full and satiated; we want these nutrients to be higher while keeping saturated fat and sodium levels lower. Glance at the ingredient list to look for anything added. The frozen department is filled with vegetables, fruits and grains like brown rice that have nothing else added to them. You can prepare an entire meal in minutes utilizing products entirely from the frozen department.

SBDC IOWA TRICIA RIVAS I’m beyond honored to be a small business counselor with the SBDC. I myself have been mentoring and cheering on small businesses for 12+ years. This is such a passion of mine. Helping these business owners with business plans, financials, social media, and making connections with other small business owners is just a few items we help with at the SBDC. It was always a long-term goal of mine to do consulting for small businesses when I eventually retired from hair. Lol and by my choice that won't be happening anytime soon but I didn’t want to keep putting this other passion of mine on hold. So in true Tricia style, I’m doing both and I’m loving every minute of it!!!!! We have so many amazing resources for small business owners here in Iowa. We need to be spreading the word loud and proud and I’m here to do that. I’m also assisting with the Targeted Small Business program. (I sent over a separate email with that info to include in the article). This program is stellar and as a small business owner, I would love to chat with you and see if you qualify. You can also reach me at the same email rivastricia@gmail.com. It’s another resource that you want to have in your toolbox. I truly am honored to be a part of these amazing teams and for them to believe in me and see the love and fierce passion that I have for Iowa Small Businesses. I owe a huge thank you to Jill Lippincott, Lisa Shimkat, and Stacy Dryer for putting all of this in motion for me. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

There's combination of both residential and a lot of businesses in this area. You get the opportunity to meet both small and large organizations. It's a great opportunity to learn from one another and to keep our successes going. FuseDSM has a lot of networking opportunities and wonderful programming. LIVING ON THE ENTREPRENEUR SHAKY BRIDGE BY ERIK DOMINGUEZ In early 2021, I committed myself and my business to travel for reflection and rejuvenation at the start of this year. After a tumultuous start to my public speaking and public speaking training business in January 2020, it was time to ground myself in the intentions of the impact I wanted to create. I traveled to Costa Rica to enjoy the warm weather (who doesn't want to get out of the blistering Iowa cold in January!), and to have clear space to strategize for the next few years of my company. While I certainly accomplished creating a strategic plan, I encountered some unintentional lessons in my travel, all of them relating to the entrepreneurial journey that many of us are on. I learned most of these while on guided tours of some of the beautiful nature that Costa Rica had to offer. Here are the main lessons I learned:

Passionately love what you do. All of the tour guides I experienced were completely overjoyed to be doing exactly what they were doing. When we found an animal or a rare plant, their passion was infectious. While they had seen this particular element of nature hundreds if not thousands of times before, their excitement reflected someone seeing it for the first time. I want to show up with the same optimism and thrill that those tour guides showed me for their work. Create a win/win environment. While on the walks, I would see the tour guides calling and messaging others about where the wildlife was hiding that morning. I later found out that these tour guides informed their competitors where the best views were. They explained that everyone wins when everyone has a great experience - regardless of the company or the bottom dollar. I want to show up for others in their best interest and support all of those around me
