FROM THE BOARD CHAIR A client challenged me the other day to state my “one word” for the new year – to be lived in my work and home space physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually in 2022. This was not what my usual year-end goal-setting plan….and, my day job exercises the mantra of helping my clients to find their voice and then help them tell their story. This work of finding purpose statements, taglines and web content is usually counter to limiting it to just one word. I accepted this challenge, and as I reflected on the upcoming year and my firm’s 5th year anniversary. The word I chose was “BOLD”. And, I as move into the position of Board Chair for FuseDSM, the word cannot be more reflective of our organization and our goals for serving our members in 2022. Under the leadership of our past chair, Randy Sackett, and the visionary dreams and tenacity of our President, Trish Flaherty-Barnes, FuseDSM is bringing BOLD programming and membership benefits to serve our resilient business-owners and non-profit leaders. We will provide this leadership and build upon an environment that will support all of our BOLD visions for our businesses and organizations for growth.

RESULTS OF CENTRAL IOWA BROADBAND INTERNET STUDY GREATER DES MOINES PARTNERSHIP

GREATER DES MOINES, IA (Dec. 17, 2021) – The Greater Des Moines Partnership has released the results of the Central Iowa Broadband Internet Study produced by HR Green in partnership with B&G Global, Smart Source and KAS. The Study was initiated in early 2021 for 11 counties in the region with a goal to create a framework under which governments, the public and providers can align in new and innovative ways to create solutions to the digital divide present in Central Iowa. Funding from the following public and private partners made the Broadband Internet Study possible: Adair County, Dallas County, Guthrie County, Jasper County, the Madison County Development Group, Marion County, the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, Polk County, Poweshiek Iowa Development, Story County, Warren County, Alliant Energy, the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Pella Rural Electric Cooperative and the Greater Des Moines Partnership. The report provides the following insights: There is an opportunity to improve broadband access and increase adoption by up to 19% of households (or approximately 181,500 people), which would create an estimated 20-year net present value of $1.25 billion to the 11-county region. Federal and state grant funding is available to help providers further build out their networks, and the report identifies information at the census block level to support grant applications. There is opportunity for progressive broadband public policies to encourage development. Public entities that make deployment faster and less expensive to deploy for providers will see broader investment. Only 18.5% of Iowa’s population has access to low-priced broadband of $60 per month or less. The report identifies strategies to help increase that percentage.

Some households have access to broadband but face barriers due to affordability, perceived lack of need or other reasons. Statistics in the report show the disparity of broadband adoption based on socio-economic status and highlight how a lack of broadband access impacts and creates further disparity for education, healthcare, and economic status. The report provides information on current broadband use and future trends to support the need to install faster, higher bandwidth when deploying new services. Several recommendations are proposed in the report, including: Establish a sponsor organization to improve coordination and facilitation. Counties and cities are recommended to explore progressive broadband policies. Counties and private sector partners are encouraged to pursue grant opportunities. Identify and develop effective adoption strategies for lower-income and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Implement a regional broadband dashboard. The Partnership is in the process of building a dashboard that will go live in January 2022. Data in the dashboard will include satisfaction and speed test results from businesses and people surveyed for the study, data on the estimated cost of deployment, and more. More than 4,500 residents and businesses participated in the Central Iowa Broadband Internet Study survey. The Survey results, along with other data collected and analyzed through this process, provide internet providers, government officials and communities with direction for short-term and long-term funding options and solutions.

5 ACTIVITIES TO GET YOU OUT OF THE HOUSE THIS WINTER IN DES MOINES BY ERIN HUIATT OF DES MOINES PARENT

Don’t let the cold weather ice-olate you! Being cooped up all winter will give you and your family a severe case of cabin fever. Get out of the house and soak up the Vitamin D whether that is participating in an outdoor activity or indoor activity surrounded by nature. You do not have to hibernate indoors all winter. Here are five activities to get you out of the house this winter in Des Moines.

Go Sledding Sledding is the go-to outdoor winter activity for kids everywhere. Finding the perfect hill, racing down it as fast as they can, and running back to the top to do it all over again. Winter Park in Urbandale is open to the public all winter. As I write this, there is no snow on the ground, but it will be here soon! Can’t wait for the snow? Head over to Seven Oaks Recreation in Boone. When mother nature doesn’t cooperate, they make their own snow. You can sled or go tubing down their hills. And you don’t have to walk back up. Take a look at our giant list of sledding locations.

Ice Skating Skating rinks are popular throughout Des Moines and an excellent option for the entire family. Brenton Skating Plaza was the first open-air ice skating facility in Iowa when it first opened in 2006. Located on the riverfront, Brenton Skating Plaza offers a great view of the downtown Des Moines skyline. Metro Ice Sports and the new West Des Moines RecPlex offer open ice skating indoors. Have your own skates? There’s no cost to ice skate at many community ice skating rinks scattered all over Des Moines.

Skywalks If you’re looking for a great way to get out and see the beauty of Des Moines, there is no better place than the scenic Skywalks around the city. Take a stroll high above the city streets and take in the view. When you enter the downtown area, it is easy to spot the many climate-controlled, glass-sided walkways connecting the buildings above. While they are often busy during the week, they are significantly less crowded on weekends. When the weather is cold, and you want to get out of the house and show your kids something amazing, the Des Moines Skywalk is the place to go. Here is a fun guide to help you explore the downtown skywalk.

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden If you are looking to immerse yourself in nature, and stay warm all at the same time, check out the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. This seven-acre indoor garden is a sight to behold. The geo disc-domed conservatory is an 80 ft tall glass dome that will make your jaw drop. Inside, you will be able to explore and learn about the many different types of flowers, plants, and trees in the many gardens.

Nature Centers There is a great selection of nature centers throughout Des Moines that allow you to enjoy the outdoors, indoors during the colder months. Enjoy a visit to the Jester Park Nature Center in Granger or experience hands-on history at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. Take a look at the extensive list of nature centers.

LEADERSHIP IS UNLOCKING PEOPLE ATW TRAINING

“Leadership is unlocking people's potential to become better.” – Bill Bradley The focus for leadership training is straightforward: helping leaders acquire and hone “best practice” skills in leading others, and helping leaders avoid common mistakes and career “derailers.” There is no “one size fits all” approach to leadership. There are striking examples of both effective and ineffective leadership as you look throughout our business world today. Here are some of the most important skills for leaders to master as well as the mistakes leaders frequently make and need to avoid so they don’t get derailed in their careers.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF RESOLUTION

DANIELLE RUSCH SENIOR HR CONSULTANT - DYNAMIC TALENT CONSULTANTS It’s that time of year again. New Year's resolutions. But let’s talk about what resolutions really are . . . goals. Whether personally, professionally, or as an organization, goal-setting is an important strategic tool to building success. And I wholeheartedly believe in setting goals. And not just at this time of year, but anytime during the year when applicable. To be truly effective, goals need to be purposeful and driven by value

1. Remove, Don’t Add When it comes to goal-setting, people tend to feel obligated to add to their already exhaustive lists. In reality, it’s likely that what is really needed is to remove the excess and unnecessary items that you’re currently engaged in that are no longer serving a purpose. This may be a weekly or monthly team meeting. It may mean delegating more items to your team members (which may also support empowering them). It could mean setting better

grandiose and sometimes unrealistic goals, or on the flip side, setting goals that are vague and undefined. And more often than not, the end result is stress, anxiety, and eventually, failure. According to a survey by Everest College, 83% of US workers suffer from work-related stress. In a workplace already filled with overwhelming and unhealthy work-life balance, adding more is not the answer. As we begin this New Year, I want to challenge you to change your mindset on goal-setting, resolutions, and instead, focus on those necessary changes that will decrease stress and increase productivity and profits. Here’s how to do just that:

Before adding new goals to the mix, it’s important to first evaluate and assess your existing goals. Did you complete your previously stated goals? If not, why not? It’s time to review those goals and modify them. Is it a goal that needs to be completed or can it be taken off the list? Is it a goal that’s been gaining traction and instead you want to put more time and effort into it before adding more? Take time to decide whether what you already are working on is worth continuing, modifying, or removing

FUTURE HOME OF THE ITALIAN-AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER OF IOWA ITALIAN-AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER OF IA The iconic Butler Mansion on Fleur Dr in Des Moines IA, was

built in 1934, in a style the architecture magazines called Streamlined Moderne, a late version of art deco that possibly had more of the practical and less panache. It was forwardlooking per the wishes of Earl Butler, an engineer who had lived in the city about three decades, and his architect George Kraetsch, also a Des Moines native. The Butler Mansion was built for durability, all reinforced concrete, steel trusses and large, steel windows that rolled outward. A ramp system unfolds from the basement to the third-floor sunroom.

Making the Butler Mansion a destination point for the State of Iowa will open its’ doors to public use. This building that overlooks downtown Des Moines will feature two large convention/banquet halls, several smaller meeting rooms, a projection room, an education center, and an outdoor courtyard, that will attract businesses and people to Iowa. Our mission to preserve and promote our Italian heritage will vastly expand with the opportunity to showcase an interactive museum featuring our Italian ancestors and traveling museum tours, a vineyard, an educational center for language and cooking classes, and an art studio to teach Italian arts. A store will feature Italian products, a café will

FIVE HEALTHMARKET PRODUCTS FIT FOR YOUR MEAL PLAN Stay focused on your health and wellness goals this New Year with the help of your Hy-Vee dietitian. With the right education, support and structure, you will be on your way to reaching your health and wellness goals. Choose from a variety of nutrition services including Nutrition Store Tours, Healthy Habits Menu Program and Wellness Wednesday weekly classes. For many people, these three tips can be helpful when choosing food products in the aisle. Choose whole-grain products that provide a good source of fiber and protein. Whole grains can be helpful for those wanting to maintain or lose weight, balance blood sugars, promote healthy cholesterol levels and improve gut health. They help you stay full longer as they take longer to digest, which also helps keep blood sugar levels stable. Fiber can also help reduce cholesterol and promote GI regularity. Select products that provide a source of healthy unsaturated fats. Fat can be very satiating even in small

amounts, which can help you feel full and satisfied. Healthy fats are actually beneficial for cholesterol levels, helping reduce bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol. Look for products to help reduce your added sugar intake. Often even a small swap in your diet can make a big difference when done consistently day after day. Products without added sugar will be lower calorie for weight loss goals and can help with improving blood sugar control. Here are five HealthMarket products your dietitian may recommend adding to your shopping list for a wellbalanced meal plan that includes whole grains, healthy fats and smart no-sugar-added swaps. Food For Life Ezekiel sprouted grain bread Food For Life Ezekiel bread is made by combining six sprouted grains and legumes which together provide a complete protein. Each slice of bread contains 3 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein. Tumaro’s Carb Wise wraps Tumaro’s Carb Wise whole-wheat wraps contain 60 calories, 13 grams carbohydrates, 7 grams fiber and 5 grams protein. Try them for wraps, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, enchiladas, tacos and fajitas. Banza pasta Banza pasta is made from chickpeas. Banza pasta contains 5 grams fiber and 11 grams protein per serving. For those wanting to eat more plant-based, Banza can be a helpful addition for a pasta as it provides 1.5 times the protein and 3 times the fiber as traditional pasta. Chosen Foods avocado oil Chosen Foods avocado oil is made from ripened-to-perfection avocados, providing a healthy source of fat. With a neutral flavor, avocado oil can be used for baking, marinades, dressing mixed greens and pasta salads. With avocado oil’s 500°F smoke point it can be used for any cooking purpose, from high-heat sautéing to grilling or baking.

SKILL BUILDING IN 2021: LESSONS FROM FITNESS

BY ERIK DOMINGUEZ A little more than five years ago, I walked into my first Crossfit class. The group dynamic, the jargon, the movements, and the

intensity

of

the

sport

were

intimidating. At that point in my life, I did not have a healthy exercise habit and knew that I needed to invest in something that would keep me energized and accountable. While I am nothing close to an elite athlete, that's the point. You don't need to be an elite competitor in the sport to reap its tremendous benefits. I have come a long way in understanding the nuances of Crossfit and have often enjoyed the parallels I see between training your body and training your mind. As we start a new year and a new habit, I would love to share three key lessons that I have learned from the sport that can be applied to my primary passion, public speaking. And, these lessons also apply to any other skills you are cultivating in 2022!

EXPERT ARTCILE

JAN 2021

There is a difference between a skill and a task. Going to the gym once does not make me fit. Going to the gym regularly does. And, even when I get fit...I don't stay fit. There is a danger in approaching skill building like a task; we often erroneously believe that because we took a class, read an article, or got a tip from someone, we are "done" building that skill. Skill-building like fitness or communication takes daily commitment and reinvention. There are no tips or shortcuts to skillbuilding. Tips and tricks only work after you have developed the skill. In Crossfit, you need to learn the fundamental skills and master them before you can make any adjustments to maximize your results. This is the same with public speaking; mastering the fundamentals is the ONLY tip to powerful communication. Attempting to shortcut your way to success only leads to frustration and fatigue.

The sport celebrates those differences, and so does the public speaking stage. We often think we need to fill a mold of traditional public speaking and be GREAT at every aspect of persuasion and storytelling. However, it is much more about recognizing where you shine and working on those areas of growth that would most positively impact your audience. As you invest in your 2022 goals, remember

Everyone has different strengths. One of
