Letter from our Board Chair // Dr. Ryan Anderson

This year marks a year of change and development of the FuseDSM Chamber of

Commerce. We continue to be a leading influence in our community’s development and success. I am honored to serve as the 2019 Chair of the Board of FuseDSM Chamber of Commerce. As I look back over the first 10 months of this year, I am excited to see all that we have accomplished. We have invested time and energy on governance and strategic visioning to ensure we are meeting the needs of our community and members. We are currently planning on the creation of new committees which will allow more volunteer opportunities for our members.

We have created new and exciting programs to help expand member awareness on local issues. We will continue to advocate for our members and surrounding community.

As corporate presence continues to grow within the metro, FuseDSM is aware that we need continue to

attract more businesses desiring to invest in the Des Moines area. The programming we have developed will allow FuseDSM Chamber to intentionally have a more transformational, rather than transactional, mindset.

Des Moines is a city based on innovation and public- partnerships. On behalf of our staff and Board of

When you start getting serious about buying a house, you should first talk to a lender you trust. There are many options out there for people who want to buy their first home and your banker can help you find the one that is best for you. A visit with your banker can also help you determine how much house you can afford. We figure out how much you qualify for by considering two things: Income vs Debt First, we look at how much income you have compared to how much debt you’ll have after you buy the house. Your banker can help you estimate your loan payments and discuss if you are comfortable with that amount.

Credit The other thing we look at is your credit history. Multiple factors in your credit history determine your credit score such as: • Do you pay your bills on time?

• How long is your credit history?

• What other kinds of accounts have you managed such as a car loan, credit cards, rent payments, utilities?

• How many credit cards do you have?

• A good credit score is 700 – 749. An excellent credit score is 750 or above.

You can find your credit score from one of the three major credit bureaus: • Equifax® www.equifax.com • Experian® www.experian.com • TransUnion® www.transunion.com Prequalification Letter A prequalification letter specifies how much your lender is willing to lend you. Realtors or sellers will take you more seriously if you have gone through the prequalification process. You can submit a prequalification application over the phone or in person.

Down Payments A major misconception with first time homebuyers is the down payment aspect of it. The requirement for the down payment varies depending on the program.

If you have another asset, you can borrow money against that asset for the down payment or there are several different types of programs that can help you with your down payment. They have different benefits and your banker can help you determine which will be the best product for you.

COMMUNITY UPDATE // STARTS RIGHT HERE Starts Right Here: New Facility to Help Troubled Des Moines Youth // Maria Lisignoli, WHOTV13

A new facility in Des Moines hopes to help local youth stay out of

trouble and finish high school.

“We’re starting over. There’s a lot of chaos out there and no matter

where you are at, it starts right here,” local activist and Starts Right Here owner Will Keeps said.

That is where the name Starts Right Here started. Keeps just got the

building for his new alternative school last week, and he wants it to be so much more than just a school.

“I want them to come in here and feel like they’re superheroes, like

they’re a part of a justice league. I want them to feel very important when they come here,” Keeps said.

He said an average of 50 kids will come from the partnership with

Des Moines Public Schools.

“If a kid gets suspended, they don’t go home. They come to us. If a kid

gets in trouble with Des Moines police and they get kicked out of Des Moines Public Schools, they don’t go home. They come to us. If a kid gets out of jail, they come to us,” Keeps said.

Keeps is also working with the Des Moines Police Department’s Second Chance Program, which helps local kids

who have had run-ins with the law. Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie said the Second Chance Program is well received, but there needs to be something else.

“They have to have some place else to go after that. They have to feel like they’re wanted and they’re needed and

that they have a chance,” Cownie said.

Keeps said Cownie is not the only person in power backing this facility. He said he also has support from Gov.

Kim Reynolds and U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst. But at the root of it all, it is the kids who support Keeps’ efforts.

“I’m one of the kids that is struggling and I can see why he picked me out. He wants me to do better, and that’s what I’m trying to do,” 18-year-old Des Moines resident Kei Threee said. “He’s not only a black man trying to do something with his life, he’s a black man trying to make stuff happen.”

COVER STORY // PRAIRIE MEADOWS IS CELEBRATING 30 YEARS! Prairie Meadows // Celebrating 30 Years!

Prairie Meadows has a storied history. And now it’s a driving force

behind many of central Iowa’s economic and cultural achievements.

In the mid-1980s, five local entrepreneurs — Ken Grandquist, Jack Bishop, Ed Skinner, Jim Rasmussen, and Gary Palmer — had a vision. They were determined to develop a business that would aid Iowa’s agricultural community and catalyze economic development, all while creating an entertainment venue that would encourage tourism. It seemed like a lofty goal, but with the help of civic leaders, volunteers, and local supporters — plus $40 million in bonds from Polk County — Prairie Meadows Racetrack became a reality in 1989.

What was once 240 acres of pastureland was now a mile-long horse racetrack. And on March 1, 1989, more

than 7,000 people witnessed the majesty of Prairie Meadows’ first race.

“It’s the sport of kings,” said President and CEO Gary Palmer. “Who doesn’t want that, especially in an economy that was down to almost nothing? There were a lot of questions as to how we’d do it, how we’d get the expertise, how it would turn out in the long run. But we put all of our efforts together, and it’s lasted 30 years with great success.”

That’s not to say there weren’t a few roadblocks. Iowa had some serious economic fallout in the early 1990s, and that equated to Prairie Meadows filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November of 1991. But the team of Bishop, Palmer, Rasmussen, and Skinner refused to unravel. They collaborated with Polk County leaders and got a bill passed that allowed Prairie Meadows to add slot machine gaming.

It was approved by a single vote and signed into law in 1994.

How to manage this growing business was a

groundbreaking solution devised by Jim Rasmussen, president of Racing Association of Iowa. He envisioned Prairie Meadows running as a public nonprofit, dedicated to lessening the burden of government by the addition of slots was met with unprecedented success. Prairie Meadows repaid its nearly $90 million of debt to Polk County in just 20 short months. Table games were added in 2004 and three years later, Prairie Meadows expanded its entertainment options by adding The Meadows Events Center. Restaurants Triple Crown Buffet and AJ’s Steakhouse soon followed, and Prairie Meadows Hotel was completed in 2012. The no. 1 entertainment destination in Iowa had come full circle, and is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

That three-decade benchmark isn’t just marking time, it’s marking an outstanding record of philanthropy,

economic development, Iowa employment, and tourism. Through taxes, grants, and charitable donations, Prairie Meadows has given $1.8 billion to the state of Iowa, with $808 million staying in Polk County.

Tursi’s Latin King: Una Tradizione Italiana For over 69 years Tursi’s Latin King Restaurant has stood as a hallmark of quality traditional Italian dining in Des Moines. Considered an “East-side institution,” Tursi’s Latin King delivers an authentic piece of Italy in the heart of the Midwest. The Latin King, originally established by Jim and Rose Pigneri in 1947, acquired its owner’s name after Bob and Amy Tursi purchased the restaurant in August of 1983. Registration is required. The MOXIE group discusses sensitive issues business owners face in a confidential environment.
