COMMUNITY SPACE // THE SLOW DOWN COFFEE CO. A MERGE OF HISTORY AND FUTURE // The Slow Down Coffee Co. In the heart of the Highland Park/Oak Park neighborhoods, Drew Kelso and the team felt inspired to open a “Third Place” for the community. A “Third Place” is a concept that creates a gathering spot for the community, outside of the two usual social environments of home (“first place”) and the workplace (“second place”). That’s why every detail of this well crafted community coffee shop was created for conversations. Continuing with the responsibility of creating a space for the community, The Slow Down Coffee Co. uniquely combines the rich history of Highland/Oak Park neighborhoods with the new diverse culture that has settled to call Des Moines a home. This includes keeping design details from the old hardware store; like the markings on the floor to measure rope, and also creating a diverse menu of offerings not found at your typical coffee shop. Even more, to celebrate what makes Des Moines unique, Kelso enlisted the help of a new up and coming artist to create a mural to display just that. Marissa Hernandez Art & Design created the mural that sits in the conversation area of the shop. You will find a diverse set of people taking the time to slow down and create a space of self care.
