Non-religious funeral and memorial ceremonies

Meaningful and memorable ceremonies

Humanist funerals and memorials are non-religious ceremonies which focus on the person who has died, the life they led, and the relationships they forged. They are based on the humanist perspective that every life is valuable and unique.

A humanist funeral or memorial is the perfec t option for families and fr iends who want a sincere, pers onal commemoratio n of their love d one, withou t religion

Each funeral and memorial ceremony is tailore d to the person who has died, and the wishes of the people who love them, in the most fit ting way possible That may be an upbeat celebration of life or a ceremony with a more traditional tone.

Humanist funerals are inclusive and welcoming to people of all backgrounds and faiths . They of ten include time for reflectio n on the person who has died, when those with religious beliefs can s ay a silent pr ayer, if they wish.

Humanist funerals and memorial ceremonies are conducted by our trained and accredited celebrants.

Funeral Partners celebrate those representing company values with awards

Funeral Partners is honouring hardworking funeral professionals who offer outstanding support to grieving families as they prepare to say farewell to a loved one.

Teams across the 17 Funeral Partners’ funeral homes were asked to nominate the colleagues who best reflect the company’s values of Accepting Responsibility, Professional Standards, Helping People, Respect For Everyone, First Choice For Families and Best In The Profession in everything they do.

Those who met the criteria best were shortlisted, and Terry Weir, Senior Funeral Director at James Brown & Sons in Belfast was named Funeral Partners’ Northern Ireland Funeral Professional of the Year for his hard work and dedication.

He plays a key role in maintaining the high standards expected by families and is described as respectful, professional and always willing to help.

Terry, who has been with James Brown & Sons for more than 18 years, previously worked at a newspaper group.

Speaking about his move into funeral services, he said: “I was very much attracted by the fact I’d be able to help people through a difficult time in their life, which has always been the most rewarding part of the role.

“I was extremely surprised, overwhelmed and humbled

to be recognised by this award and am very honoured indeed.”

Another nominee was Deborah McConnell, also of James Brown & Sons, who has worked in the funeral profession for ten years, is a qualified embalmer and has recently become a Senior Funeral Arranger.

Deborah previously had a career working in a bank but was inspired to start a new career in funeral services to help look after people.

“A funeral is the last chance you have to do something meaningful for someone, so it has to be perfect,” she said.

Terry Weir, Senior Funeral Director at James Brown & Sons in Belfast Barbara Wilson, a Funeral Manager in Northern Ireland Senior Funeral Director Geoffrey Irons, works at Bairds of Antrim

“I love caring for people and I love people to know I am here for them – even after the funeral – it doesn’t have to end on the day.”

Another professional to achieve commendation is Senior Funeral Director Geoffrey Irons who has worked at Bairds of Antrim for 27 years.

He said he was humbled and proud to be nominated by his colleagues.

“Working with our client families every day and helping them at their most emotional and difficult times as in arranging and conducting their funerals is why I am in the profession,” he said.

“When I am told they couldn’t have done this without us, it makes it all worth it.”

The final winner is Barbara Wilson, a Funeral Manager in Northern Ireland who works across the three John Gray and Co funeral homes in Holywood, Bangor and Newtownards, and Shields of Donaghadee, helping to run and manage branches, assisting with community initiatives and ensuring the homes meet the needs of families.

A previous regional winner of the award, Barabra said it was wonderful to be recognised by her colleagues for a second time.

“It’s feels great knowing that people still value the work I do and I am grateful for the great relationships I have with my colleagues,” she said.

“Although I am now in a different role, I am enjoying my work every bit as much as before. I am meeting and seeing much more of them in person, which is fantastic.

“Working with Funeral Partners has been life-changing for me and I’m so happy to have grown with the company over the years.

“I am living proof that if you put the work in, show commitment and passion then the opportunities are there for you.”

Latest Community Fund recipients include football inclusion project and mental health scheme

Young people from a variety of different backgrounds will get the chance to make new friendships and integrate into their community through football thanks to the James Brown & Sons Community Fund.

Since it launched last year, the fund has given more than £20,000 to local good causes, with another £25,000 set to be donated by the end of the year.

Charities representing communities within a twomile radius of the James Brown & Sons funeral homes in Belfast, Dundonald, Dunmurry, Newtownabbey and Whiteabbey have the chance to apply for grants of between £300 and £1,500.

Cregagh Wanderers – who play at the George Best Pitch

14 | FuneralTimes
James Brown and Sons Funeral Home Manager Andrew Neale with Alan McLennon from Cregagh Wanderers

at Cregagh Green – have been given £1,000 to help fund their ten-week introduction to football camp for children aged between 9 and 15 from minority backgrounds.

The scheme ran throughout the summer, allowing children and their families to find out about what the club offers, with the hope they continue to play in the coming seasons.

Kim McLennan, Club Secretary and Coach said: “We have several members of our club from ethnic minorities and they and their parents have told us that when they first arrived they felt that they did not know where to turn to or who to speak to when it came to accessing sporting opportunities.

“One of our teams now has eight different nationalities in it. It’s great to see so many people from different backgrounds coming together.

“We’re so grateful for the £1,000 which will help us continue to attract new people and integrate them properly into the club.”

Elsewhere, £1,000 was given to The Toolbox – a project run by charity Compassion Belfast

James Brown and Sons Funeral Home Manager Andrew Neale with Jim McGardle and Philip Edgerton

in Donegall Pass– which helps both men and women who experience mental health problems keep active and engaged via woodworking. More than 20 people per week attend regularly, with completed items either sold to raise money for the charity or kept by participants, including log figure garden ornaments, dog-themed garden planters and much more.

About Funeral Partners:

Money from the community fund has allowed them to upgrade their tools and will ensure more people can participate.

Project Co-ordinator at Compassion Belfast Jim McGardle said: “I know from my own experience with mental health issues that keeping busy, and doing something with your hands can be beneficial because it stops your mind racing.

“We have people attending regularly but have had more and more interest from wellbeing groups who want to come as a collective.

“This is where the money from the fund will help us so much – we can get more tools and increase the capacity on offer.”

Beverley Brown, Marketing and Community Relations Manager, said: “These schemes from Cregagh Wanderers and Compassion Belfast are exactly the sort of projects we are keen to support.

“It’s great to see the fund continuing to make a real difference in the communities we are so proud to serve.”

Funeral Partners is the UK’s third largest funeral business, with more than 230 funeral homes staffed by over 1000 dedicated funeral professionals serving communities across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Chief Executive Sam Kershaw has over 40 years’ experience in the funeral profession, joining the business back in 2016 as Chief Operating Officer. Funeral Partners, which celebrated its 15-year anniversary in 2022, has grown rapidly, building a strong reputation as a well-run, high-quality funeral services business overseeing more than 25,000 funerals each year.

It now includes more than 130 family businesses, which have entrusted their reputation and heritage to Funeral Partners.

IAFD host in-person talk focusing on key employee and HR compliance risks facing Funeral Directors

Funeral Times Trade Show Ireland

Tuesday 3rd October 2023 at 1.30pm

Funeral directors help families at a time when they need outstanding service. To deliver this high level of service, it’s vital to have a good team around you and to know how to manage employee risks.

At this year’s Funeral Times Trade Show, Employment Litigation Expert Ellen Walsh from Peninsula will hold an in-person talk focusing on key

employee and HR compliance risks facing funeral directors and how to manage them.

Ellen’s talk will include valuable HR advice on:

• Compliance with working time rules (overtime, unsociable hours)

• Employing family members

• Employment contracts

• Risks around employing trackers and drivers (importance of handbooks)

• Health and safety risks around manual handling

• Q&A to wrap up

IAFD in the news – interview with Irish Examiner

IAFD discusses how the lengthy turnaround times for toxicology results and waiting lists for post-mortem examinations resulting in delays to funerals is causing great ‘upset and distress’ to the families of loved ones.

Fintan Cooney, spokesman of the Irish Association of Funeral Directors, said: “The problem with an issue like this is that it’s never going to be affecting many people at any one time so it is hard to get traction around an issue like this because it is more qualitative than quantitative.

The level of distress and

upset that is caused to families when it happens is very high

but the number of families affected by it in the overall scale of things is low.”

“The problem is that when they go into the Dublin City Mortuary system, it slows down significantly.”

He said the delays in Dublin relating to the release of remains is just one of a number of issues around the area of death investigation.

He added people can have to wait for lengthy periods for causes of death to emerge from toxicology reports, or for the completion of inquests, after experiencing the shock of a sudden death.

IAFD Board Members receive their Certificates of Excellence after successfully completing the updated IAFD Excellence Programme

Members of the IAFD Board recently received their Certificate of Excellence, having successfully passed an independent audit carried out by Meany Management Systems.

IAFD has over 280 members who conduct over 80% of funerals on the island of Ireland. All IAFD members are required to operate their

business in compliance with the IAFD Quality Standard and relevant employment and health & safety legislation. The IAFD Quality Standard sets the standard for processes, equipment and facilities for IAFD members and is based on the European Standard for Funeral Services.

Tom Lawless, President said “We operate our

Free Grief Support Service for children and young people open in Galway

Cathleen Hartnett, Chair of Board of HopeSpace, said:

“HopeSpace is a much-needed service which aims to help the children and young people of Galway through the deep and difficult challenges of grief. We opened our doors earlier this year, we are now supporting children and young people who have experienced a personal loss and need a kind and listening ear.

“If you are a parent or guardian of a child or a young person who might benefit from

HopeSpace’s service, please get in touch with us by phone, email or social media. From there, we will talk about how HopeSpace can support you. We usually arrange six one-to-one sessions with a trained volunteer who encourages the child or young person to talk about their grief and helps them identify their emotions around these feelings. The service is child-focused and child-led and if more sessions are needed, we provide them.

Funeral Times Trade Show

2023 - A look back

It’s been 6 whole years since the last Funeral Times Trade Show and we can’t wait for the latest edition at Leopardstown Pavilion. It promises to be an exciting exhibition with representatives from all different aspects of the funeral sector.

The Funeral Times Trade Show kicked off in 2013 with a hugely successful show in CityWest Hotel. The 2 day event led to an uptick in sales for exhibitors and glowing reviews from attendees.

It was followed up by the 2015 show which proved that this was no one-hit-wonder. An increase in attendees, and a larger variety of exhibitors meant that this show was one of the biggest Ireland’s funeral sector had ever seen.

In 2017 things ramped up again when we revealed the W213 model E Class Hearse. This vehicle exploded in popularity and became our single best selling hearse ever, in no small part down to the success of the exhibition and the support of funeral directors who attended.

For 2023 we’re taking some time to celebrate family businesses that are the cornerstone of the funeral sector in Ireland. With our Vincy Bear scavenger hunt, we’re encouraging all the family to come along and join in. The next generation of funeral directors can get a taster for different aspects of the industry and everyone can get the chance to speak about what it’s like in multigenerational businesses.

Not to forget the vehicles we will have with us! Both inside and outside the venue we will have a selection of funeral vehicles for you to browse, ask questions about and have a sit inside to view and try out the features.

Join us at stand G5 and help us celebrate the Irish funeral sector.

This year Mark is really looking forward to exhibiting at our new venue, The Pavilion at Leopardstown Racecourse, Dublin. As it has been 6 years from the last show, way back in 2017, he’s really looking forward to catching up with old industry colleagues and friends, as well as meeting new ones.

Make sure you stop and say hello to Mark at the Funereal Soft Furnishings Stand M4. Here you will be able to view the wide selection of essential coffin interiors and accessories on display.

Ramblings from the Cleaner

In the last decade I’ve cleaned everything from chip vans to drug squats, million pound new builds to extreme decomposition.

I have cleaned up after violent crimes, suicide, fatal falls and many sudden or unattended deaths. I am mostly contacted by families, friends, neighbours or landlords, and it can be difficult for some.

I am always learning and gaining experiences as each situation is different, each phone call is unique and personal, some people need a hug and a shoulder to cry on some people just need

a friendly face. I am hoping to continue my work and connect with all of you at the trade fair in October, I’d like to talk about having that direct contact between your services and mine. Together we can help those in need.

I can honestly say I love what I do and I hope my passion will lead me for many years to come. See you all in October.

Introducing the team

in the island of Ireland have seen a marked increase in the last couple of years. The significant rise in numbers since the Covid pandemic has not abated; if anything, with more people attending cremations in that time, and with the understandable questions and uncertainties about it being answered for many, more people are now considering it as part of their end-of-life plans.

Cremations

Here in Lakelands Funeral Home & Crematorium, as well as being trusted funeral directors in our local community, we continue

to see an ever-increasing number of people choosing to come to us for cremations, and we’ve got to know funeral directors from far and wide. We hope their experience here has been a positive and welcoming one. As we’ve had a couple of changes to the team here in Lakelands over the last year or so, we thought we’d take this opportunity to introduce the front-ofhouse team, and to share what we do and what we can offer to you and those families who may ask you about our services.

Declan Finnegan Bernard McPhillips

Declan Finnegan is the owner and manager of Lakelands, and his family have been involved in the funeral business in Cavan since 1938. Declan took over the business in 1988 and in 2015 his existing funeral home opened a new crematorium, the first at the time outside of an Irish city. As well as being a funeral director of long standing in the local community, Declan is well known and respected in the funeral community across Ireland. He is also a qualified and highly skilled embalmer and his knowledge of the funeral business is second to none.

In 2022 Bernard McPhillips joined the Lakelands team full time as a Funeral Director. No stranger to the funeral business, Bernard had been assisting Declan with funerals throughout Cavan for several years. While playing an active role in the crematorium, Bernard’s primary responsibility is to meet with families, to make advanced funeral arrangements, plan funerals, and provide support and care to those dealing with a loss. Whilst still relatively new to the team, Bernard has been instrumental in providing excellent standards of care to families and has become an integral part of the Lakelands team.

FuneralTimes | 37

Grainne O’Reilly has been an invaluable member of the Lakelands team since 2016 and is usually the first voice you hear or the first person you meet when you contact us. The administrative side of this work can be involved and daunting for some, but Grainne’s extensive knowledge and experience makes the day-to-day ins and outs of Lakelands run smoothly for the rest of the team and those who come here. Grainne also works closely with the bereaved family members in guiding them through the options open to them both before and after the cremation.

Along with those who work in the background at Lakelands preparing the ashes and keeping the cremator running smoothly, and the dedicated and loyal part-time staff who assist us, the full team is committed to assisting and accompanying funeral directors and bereaved loved ones through difficult days with professionalism, understanding, dignity and compassion.

Our website, www.lakelandscrematorium.ie has undergone a complete revamp and should be live by the time you read this. There, you will find information about our funeral business, along with the work of the crematorium. A full video walk through of our facility can be found there, as well as information on the cremation process, downloads of the necessary paperwork, the first steps to take in planning

Ian Fee joined the team in 2019, primarily as a cremation service celebrant and planner. He has thirty years’ experience of accompanying families through times of significant and profound change from his time in Church ministry, and is an accredited and much in demand civil celebrant for both funerals and weddings both sides of the border.

Many of your questions will be answered there, but feel free to contact us at any time with any queries you may have.

As our lives become more and more expressive of the wonderful uniqueness of each person, so do our end-of-life rituals. Knowing that your funeral can truly reflect your life in all its complexity and colour is so important and it’s something we understand and believe as well. Together, we welcome you to Lakelands Crematorium and we hope to see many of you in Dublin at the Funeral Times Trade Show.

Plasdo…WHAT? Making sense of the chemicals we use every day

Lincoln is the Dodge Representative for Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota. He is a licensed funeral director in Minnesota and stays active in the preparation room helping clients on a regular basis.

As a funeral director working in the preparation room on a daily basis, I was guilty of turning to my “standard mixture” to embalm a case over and over again. I am by no means saying that is a bad thing, because all of us do it every day. Knowing what works and being able to accurately forecast your results based on your mixture in the tank are signs that you have honed your skills as an embalmer and have enough experience to know what works in different scenarios. We all have our favorite chemicals that we swear by.

For many of us that talk shop with fellow funeral directors, it becomes the age-old discussion of what’s better, like Ford or Chevy. It can make for some interesting conversations around the coffee pot amongst co-workers. But have you ever wondered what some of that lingo you’ve seen on the older bottle labels or in the catalog means and when their application is best suited? What is “Plasdoform-based?” And what does

OTC. Despite the deep purple color of OTC, there is actually very little dye content in the chemical, so the tissue will receive very little staining from any dye. It has a high bleaching effect, partially because it has a higher index (30 index) to help lighten dark tissue from within, which is beneficial if you are embalming a decomposition case that is dark in skin color. Formaldehyde is a bleaching agent and higher index fluids will typically have some kind of bleaching capability. Basically, formaldehyde bleaches out the red blood cells, which in turn, helps lighten the tissue color. Introfiant with Dynachrome has an active dye in it, which will give the embalmer some color staining of the tissue. Because of the higher index, you can also expect some mild bleaching as well.

that really mean to me

as the user? From one “chemical jockey” to another, let me help you make sense of it.

As the Dodge representative in my territory, one of the questions I am most frequently asked regarding the difference in chemicals is about the difference between Introfiant with Dynachrome and Introfiant OTC. The OTC stands for Old Type Color. Introfiant OTC is the original chemical of the two types and many embalmers that have been around the block a few times lovingly refer to it as “Kool-Aid” or “Purple Jesus” because it can work miracles. This endearing term comes from the coloring of the chemical which has a purple hue to it. There is a difference between Introfiant DC and Introfiant

Many embalmers will use one of the Introfiants as a “kicker” when firming is minimal with their normal solution mixture and they want to tighten things up and get some additional firming. When I use the term “kicker,” I am referring to adding 8-16 ounces of a higher index chemical to your existing tank mixture to help solidify the desired firming of the tissue. The Introfiant line has a higher pH than most arterial chemicals which makes it ideal for difficult cases such as: decomposition, putrefied tissue, frozen or refrigerated bodies, gangrene, or cases that have been deceased for periods longer than 24 hours. When in doubt…Introfiant. What the heck does Plasdoform mean?

Plasdoform-based chemicals are designed to slow down the release of formaldehyde, allowing time for the pooling of the blood (Livor Mortis) to be flushed out during injection and the dye in the chemical to stain the tissue

48 | FuneralTimes

before the formaldehyde attaches to the proteins and firm the tissue. Plasdoform-based chemicals contain “Clathrate Molecules,” which is essentially a molecule within a molecule. In this particular scenario, the inner molecule is the one that contains the formaldehyde being encapsulated within another molecule, thus slowing down the release of the formaldehyde and providing a delayed firming reaction.

Many of the arterial chemicals that Dodge offers are Plasdoform-based. Plasdopake, Plasdo 25, Chromatech (original, pink and tan), Regal 30, and Metasyn (normal, accelerated, firming, and 35) are all Plasdoform-based chemicals. If you are using one of these chemicals, you will notice that after the embalming is completed, the tissue will continue to firm over the next few hours, as the preservative is released into the deeper tissues.

If you use the Chromatech line of chemicals when embalming, you probably already know that they provide some of the best color for embalming in the industry and there is a reason why. As mentioned above, Chromatech is a Plasdoform-based chemical that also contains a humectant to help keep moisture in the tissue and at a 21.5 index, it will provide a medium firming. Chromatech has “Tinctorial Technology” which sounds fancy, but what does it mean? Tinctorial Technology is an additive to the chemical that enhances the Eosin-based dye that is present, thus giving you better intensity of the color and staining of the tissue during your embalming.

Well, that sounds all fine and well but what is an Eosin-based dye? Many embalmers look at a bottle of arterial chemical and based on the appearance of the chemical, they will assume that it has a lot of dye contained in it. This can be a little misleading because chemical

companies will add a non-active (non-staining) dye to differentiate chemicals from each other. It changes the color of the chemical but doesn’t directly relate to any staining or coloring to the tissue in the body. Case in point, the Metasyn line of chemicals have the most active dye content of any of the Dodge chemicals even though looking at the bottle one would conclude that there isn’t a great amount of active dye present. If a chemical has an active dye, that generally means that it contains an Eosin dye. Eosin dye is the most common dye to stain cytoplasm. It is an acidic dye that binds to basic components of a cell, mainly proteins located in the cytoplasm. It typically gives off a bright pink color.

All Permaglo chemicals have a tissue staining dye or Eosin dye, if you will. A different shade, or additional dye, determines the name of the Permaglo that you are choosing to use. Examples of that would be Permaglo LS24 or Permaglo SS Brunette which each have a different Eosin dye color added to them to give the embalmer the desired tissue color they prefer for their end result. The Permaglo line is also not a Plasdoform-based chemical, so the embalmer will experience firming at a more rapid rate than if they were using a product like Regal 30 because it doesn’t contain the clathrate molecule. A fancy term you will find associated with Permaglo is “Monitored Introfier Formula.” The Introfier Formula is an added ingredient that speeds up the absorption of the preservative into the resistant tissue, thus giving you a more rapid firming result.

I had a client a couple years ago who was trying to save some money (I certainly don’t fault him for that) and he asked me, “Why do I need to spend money on Rectifiant? We have a water conditioning system at the funeral home.”

I explained the benefits of using Rectifiant but it fell on deaf ears because I believe he had already made up his mind. Ironically, a month later I got the much-anticipated phone call, and he complained about his embalming results not being as good and the bodies were turning out so nobody has to take a day off work.” Sound familiar? I bet it does. It creates challenges. I know I have been on the receiving end of that conversation and hoping that the embalmer performed a solid embalming the night before or that we won’t run into any issues that pop up down the road.

Well, when those challenges come to light, Dodge has always had a commitment to our industry to come up with a solution. Some of the newer chemicals that you may or may not have used or even heard about are: Halt GX, Halt Cavity, and Inhibitor. Halt is a product that combats tissue gas. We hope that we never have a tissue gas case but odds are that at some time in our career, we will be dealing with it. For those lucky enough to have not had to face that challenge, be thankful. Halt GX is an additive to your arterial solution. If you don’t have an issue but you want to protect yourself against one, add a bottle or two. If you already see evidence of tissue gas (Clostridium perfringens) then I would recommend using one bottle per gallon of solution to give you the best chance to minimize or eradicate the problem. Halt GX can also be hypodermically injected to problem areas or the neck to combat any creeping of tissue gas from the trunk of the body up towards the head. Halt GX is a good option to hypodermically treat the brain on a tissue gas case to help eliminate any spreading, thus causing visible signs of distention to the facial features.

Halt Cavity is a good everyday cavity that

Older versions of the Dodge bottles and labels

will give you the peace of mind that you won’t come into the prep room and find your case from the night before now showing evidence of distention in the abdomen. If you already have an issue with tissue gas, it is one of the options that can be used to help control the situation from getting any worse. Halt Cavity (21 index) has a lot of drying agent in it so it will preserve and dry the internal organs well and the addition of Halt will help combat any tissue gas that might be brewing in the chest cavity.

As discussed above, funeral homes are being asked to hold bodies for longer than normal periods of time. Because of this, many funeral homes have purchased or built coolers in their mortuaries to help accommodate such requests. Coolers are a valuable asset to a funeral home because it buys you time. Many states have laws in place that disposition or embalming needs to take place within a certain time frame. The use of a cooler often extends those time frames by a few days, and if embalming has been performed, they will help keep the deceased in better condition for those extended times.

That said, using a cooler can create some unexpected problems if you’re not monitoring the body regularly. The most common problem is dehydration. With all the air movement in the cooler passing over the body in combination with the colder than normal air temperature, dehydration is quite common. Using products like Kalon Massage Cream or Restorative humectant and covering the face and hands with plastic is a great way to help protect against dehydration from starting. If you just use Webril or a white sheet to cover the face, keep in mind that both of those products will absorb and wick moisture out of the skin, adding to your dehydration potential. The other problem that has arisen from the use of coolers

is mold. Mold spores thrive in damp conditions. The majority of common types of mold thrive in temperatures between 65°-80°F. However, there are molds that can sustain and grow at temperatures as low as 33°F. So, using your cooler at the funeral home is not going to stop or kill all mold from growing.

When Covid-19 hit in March of 2020, many states stopped all funerals from being performed or with a very low attendance of people, so many families chose to wait during that time to see how everything was going to play out and when they could have a “normal” funeral again. Mortuary coolers were at full occupancy across the country and mold issues started to be a topic from funeral directors. There entered Inhibitor, a new chemical from Dodge that was created to address the issue. Inhibitor is a humectant which will help keep tissue hydrated but it also has a wetting agent that is a mold inhibitor. One product that takes care of two problems when using a cooler and it’s easily applied with a spray bottle.

I have always been a believer that we can learn something new every day and, I will be honest with you, while researching information for this

article, I learned a few things that I didn’t know beforehand. Learning new things is how we make ourselves better funeral care professionals to the families we serve. If we stop learning, we stop growing as a person and as a professional. My hope is that by reading this article, you will be better equipped with the knowledge of the products that you use and the correct or optimal applications for them.

Pictured in Roslare, Gerard Duffy from Duffy Coachbodies with Brian Cook and Luke Reynolds of Elms Funeral Directors during the handover of a new hearse. The occasion symbolizes the latest step in their well-established business relationship, which originated in 2001 when Elms Funeral Directors acquired their first 210 Series E-Class Limousine from Duffy Coachbodies.

The image reflects an exchange that embodies the continuity of their collaboration. During the Hearse build Brian & Luke took the time to visit Dundalk, offering them firsthand exposure to the manufacturing process at the Duffy Coachbodies factory, while also being an opportunity for mutual discussions around their requirements in the ever-progressing business environment. Duffy Coachbodies would like to extend their thanks for Elms Funeral Directors continued trust & support.

NAFD Autumn General Meeting booking now open

TheNAFD Autumn General Meeting 2023 will be held at the iconic British Motor Museum, at Gaydon in Warwickshire, on Thursday 16 November 2023, providing members with an opportunity to come together to discuss the Association’s progress through the Five-Year Strategy and beyond, as the NAFD approaches its 120th anniversary in 2025. It will also provide a timely opportunity to assess the implications of the evolving external policy environment, including the Fuller Independent Inquiry’s focus on the funeral sector

and the impending launch of the Scottish Government’s new inspectorate of funeral directing and licensing scheme.

The outcome of the Fuller Inquiry is likely to result in recommendations for new mortuary standards that could

58 | FuneralTimes
NAFD

fundamentally change how funeral firms operate and, potentially, pave the way for wider statutory oversight of operational standards in the funeral sector. And while the inquiry’s jurisdiction is England, the impact of these recommendations is likely to be felt UK-wide. Shaping

the recommendations for oversight of standards in the funeral sector, to make sure they are proportionate, effective, and reasonable will be a key focus of Autumn General Meeting discussions. This is your chance to shape your future, to make sure the needs of your business

are well understood and represented by the NAFD in its discussions with decision makers and to chew over key issues with funeral sector colleagues from across the UK. NAFD members can find out more and book their place via the Events section of the NAFD website.

Call for evidence from funeral sector to shape second phase of Fuller Inquiry

The NAFD welcomed the start of Phase 2 of the Fuller Inquiry into the crimes of hospital electrician David Fuller and encouraged members to respond ahead of the 11 August deadline.

Andrew Judd, NAFD Chief Executive, said: “As the sector’s largest voluntary regulator in the UK, which inspects more than 4,000 funeral homes, we have long been concerned about the lack of oversight of funeral businesses and other organisations which look after or transport deceased people but currently have no scrutiny of standards of care.

For this reason, the NAFD particularly welcomes the inquiry’s focus on the care of deceased people by direct cremation firms, as well as in local community funeral homes, and hopes this will increase public awareness and understanding.

“The NAFD has contributed to the Inquiry in the scoping stage and expects to give evidence during Phase 2, as well as encouraging our members to provide evidence from their own businesses and experience. Our evidence will

likely focus on our quality assurance framework, the work of the Independent Funeral Standards Organisation, developments in terms of education and Continuous Professional Development, and the principles of the NAFD Funeral Director Code.

“Throughout our representations, we have stressed that NAFD members adhere to a set of standards upon which any future oversight recommendations should be based. Those standards are inclusive and can be met by a wide variety of different business types and size. The diversity of the funeral sector is important and, in our experience, benefits consumers greatly. Any future regulatory measures should respect and reflect the importance of diversity and should not be disproportionately burdensome to any groups, or group, of providers.”

Summer School provokes discussion on the theme of identity

The NAFD Summer School was a resounding success for the third year running, with attendees focussing on the

broad theme of identity and its significance after death as in life.

Among the many topics

explored were history, music, and ritual; the significance of Royal funerals following the death last year of Queen

Elizabeth II; memorialisation and monuments experienced and memorised through the senses. Tuesday evening saw a special evening at Durham Cathedral, under the watchful gaze of Luke Jerram’s stunning GAIA, which included a private guided tour, Evensong, and dinner.

The NAFD would like to thank Summer School host, the renowned anthropologist and theologian Professor Douglas Davies, from Durham University’s Centre for Death and Life Studies for another thought-provoking and highly enjoyable few days.

NAFD research helping members to think differently about direct cremation

The results of the NAFD’s report ‘It’s time to think differently about direct cremations’, released to NAFD members in May, is already helping the Association’s members to rethink their marketing, feel more confident and get involved in conversations with families about what direct cremations are and that local funeral homes are the best place to talk to about arranging one. This is particularly important given that consumer understanding about them is still developing and the public trusts local funeral directors as a source of information - a significant, positive opportunity for funeral firms.

“Arguably,” says NAFD Communications Lead Deborah Smith, who has led the project, “if you aren’t providing well-signposted access to information about direct cremations, or actively encouraging your customers to talk to you if they are interested

in arranging one, you’re simply adding to the numbers of people currently turning to direct cremation-only providers to arrange a direct cremation, wrongly believing they are the only specialists in providing them.”

A number of NAFD member firms are already making sure their customers know they can talk to them about any kind of funeral, including Darren Lloyd, of AJ Lloyd Funeral Directors in Coventry and Robin Leather, of Geoff Leather Independent Funeral Director in Newport, Hampshire.

“There was a market disruptor in place, and we had to react to help educate the public that,” said Darren Lloyd, “despite the way the new company was advertising, what they had created was nothing new.

Robin Leather agrees. “Unattended Cremations are not a new idea and funeral directors like us have been carrying them out

60 | FuneralTimes

for many years. The change is a shift in a portion of the public’s perception of what constitutes a funeral. COVID restrictions forced people to come to terms with limited and unattended funeral services and after COVID, a minority (but growing) number believe that the idea is right for them.”

“The difficulties arise in defining what the service includes and making sure that the offering is commercially viable. It is evident that the public’s requirements and expectations vary widely.”

The rise in promotion of direct cremation by direct cremation only firms offer funeral directors an opportunity, says Darren Lloyd. “We should ride on the back of the big advertising campaigns. The public are aware that direct cremation exists, it’s just up to us now to make them know it is (and has always been) available at a local level.”

For Robin Leather, the term direct cremation is not helpful. “I have had families wanting a ‘direct’ cremation price as they wish the hearse to go direct from the church to the crematorium. These misconceptions are not the public’s fault, rather the result a too much differing terminology. The only way to get around these issues is to be open and, forgive me, ‘direct’ about what is offered.”

Both firms are clear that an unattended funeral does not have to mean a reduced level of service.

“From our experience, most families do

not want low personal service unattended cremations for their family and friends,” said Robin. “They still want to meet us. They still want to sit down with us, get to know us and arrange a funeral with us.

Adds Darren: “When we have had enquiries about direct cremation, we take time to enquire what they know about direct cremation and their expectations as to what will happen. We give them a scenario of what a direct company may offer, as opposed to a local funeral home.

“My advice to funeral directors is to be honest. Say it like it is. Families like to know where they stand. They don’t need another hurdle to jump over, they need help and guidance in what is possibly the worst thing to have happened to them in many years. Be kind, be informative - that’s all they really ask of you.”

The NAFD’s report contains proactive advice and support to help member firms to feel confident in engaging in discussions about unattended cremations, as well as detailed findings about what the public thinks and feels about them. Members are also able to access tailored support, from the Association’s communications specialists, with their own marketing activity with several members already working with the NAFD to shape their messaging ahead of local open days or community events.

NAFD funeral delays report continues to gain traction in Government

The NAFD’s ‘Picking up the Pieces’ report, into delays in and fragmentation of the death management process and how these are affecting funerals, continues to gain traction with policy makers. Following a briefing meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Funerals and Bereavement, the report has been circulated widely in Government and

the Association is also currently liaising with a number of MPs on the impact of funeral delays in their local areas. The pressure on Coronial services, in particular, has also been raised in Parliament and it is being circulated among parliamentarians and the media as a source of insight into the myriad of issues affecting bereaved people.

Hashtags: What are they? And why use them for your funeral business?

The Funeral Times Trade Show 2023 is only around the corner, will you be going?

This year’s trade show is embracing social media. You can engage ahead of, during and after the event using the official hashtag #FuneralTimesTS2023. See what’s new, build connections and raise your and your Funeral business’ profile etc...

What Are Hashtags?

Hashtags are more than just a trendy symbol ‘#”. They are a word or words put together. A powerful tool that can amplify your voice on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. By adding hashtags to your post, you link it to a specific topic or conversation.

Clicking on a hashtag leads you to a feed of other posts that have used the same hashtag. This allows you to see what’s being posted. And an opportunity to engage with like-minded professionals and potential clients. Check out The Funeral Times Trade Show 2023 posts and the selection of hashtags being harnessed.

A few things to consider:

What can they do for your online presence?

• Hashtags categorise your posts. Making you more discoverable by others interested in things such as pre-planning. Think of them like “filing cabinets”.

• You can search for hashtags in the search bar of most social media platforms. Try searching for #FuneralService or #GriefSupport to see related posts.

• When you click on a hashtag, you’ll see a collection of posts using that hashtag. It’s a

way to explore content, find inspiration and connect with others.

The Value of Hashtags

Using hashtags can bring tremendous value to your posts:

• Reach a wider audience: By using relevant hashtags, your posts can be discovered by people not just in Ireland, but globally. By people who are interested in your services, but don’t know of you or your Funeral business.

• Engage in Conversations: Following specific hashtags, such as #FuneralTimesTS2023 allows you to take part in ongoing discussions. Share insights, learn from others and more. Great for content research purposes too.

• Build Your Brand: Consistent use of hashtags can help you establish your voice and expertise within the industry.

Engaging with the official hashtag: #FuneralTimesTS2023

The Funeral Times Trade Show 2023 is more than an event this time; it’s a real opportunity. The last show was in 2017 and the next one will be in 2026. By following and engaging with the

68 | FuneralTimes

official hashtag on your social platforms you can leverage your:

• Connection with peers and partners: Find other professionals attending the event. Start conversations before you even arrive. During the event (especially if there is no realtime to talk) and then afterwards on posts/ tweets. All leading to further communications.

• Ability to stay updated: Get real-time updates on sponsors, speakers, seminars and exhibitors.

• Your brand awareness and share your experience:

Get seen. Post your thoughts, photos and takeaways from the event. All which will contribute to the collective knowledge of the industry.

Give Hashtags a Go!

If you haven’t yet embraced the power of hashtags, now is the perfect time to start using them on your social posts before you go. Also using them as a research tool. Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

• Choose relevant hashtags: For example, if you’re posting about going to the trade show, you might use #FuneralTimesTS2023, #FuneralIndustry, #Networking and #ProfessionalDevelopment.

• Follow related hashtags: Keep an eye on hashtags that are related to your services and engage with posts under those hashtags.

• Track and adjust: Pay attention to which hashtags generate engagement and adjust your social media strategy.

Conclusion

By embracing hashtags, you have a real opportunity to expand your brand awareness and your personal profile. Give hashtags a go and use them in your posts.

Tip: Use around 4 hashtags on Facebook and Linkedin. With Twitter 3 hashtags and Instagram around 9. And do include your branded hashtag for your Funeral business.

Do think of The Funeral Times Trade Show 2023 as more than an event this time around. More like a movement towards greater connectivity for you and a way to help with your online growth for your Funeral business. And do go check out #FuneralTimesTS2023 right now and see what’s happening!

If you want to get a better understanding of hashtags, build a strategy or have any other questions regarding improving your online presence, do get in touch and let’s have a non-obligatory exploration call. You can find out more on www.fitsocialmedia.ie or if you prefer why not email me at eimer@fitsocialmedia.ie and you can scan this QR code too!

The importance of well-being

Have you ever heard the term “pay yourself first”? Typically in the money management part of life planning, you are supposed to put a nominal amount of money aside as a form of prioritizing savings. Kind of like filling your cup before you fill others or in the case of an aircraft emergency, putting your own mask on before you assist others.

This philosophy holds true for your mental well-being as well. Allocate time to prioritize not only your own grief but also your overall wellness. This proactive approach reduces the likelihood of succumbing to compassion fatigue, a common challenge faced by many in the funeral profession due to their daily engagement with grief-stricken individuals. By establishing boundaries, you not only safeguard your physical and emotional health but also enhance your ability to provide empathetic support.

As Sara Murphy PhD, CT* articulates it “People whose vocations ... are often working in spaces where the high saturation of death makes grief virtually inescapable. These individuals might feel that their own losses are secondary to the work they do or the people they serve.”

It’s essential to acknowledge that you too deserve understanding and emotional validation. Cultivating a support network is instrumental in enabling you to assist others without succumbing to compassion fatigue, overwhelming emotions, or irritability. This network could be in the workplace or at home with family or friends.

I spoke on May 16 last at the Funeral Professionals Peer Support Meeting on Zoom about the topic of mental health in our community. The Funeral Professionals Peer Support provide a great resource to those who cannot find our support system at home or within our close friend circles. I also chatted with Barbara Kemmis of CANA about this issue on my podcast – The Glam Reaper. Grieving is essential and that includes our own. I will be discussing this topic at the Funeral Times Trade Show in October - don’t miss out!

In the meantime, prioritize daily actions that nurture your well-being, and try to foster some relaxation into your daily routine. Filling your cup or ‘paying yourself first’ will inevitably enhance the care you provide your staff and the families you serve. You too deserve empathy and compassion.

See you in October where we will hold space for each other together!

GM Canopies excited to exhibit their ‘Vitabri’ Quality Graveside Canopies at Funeral Times Trade Show 2023

Having been a great supporter of the Funeral Times Trade Show Ireland over the years, Gerard Campbell of GM Canopies is looking forward to catching up with all his industry colleagues again this year. Since the last show in 2017, GM Canopies have continued to go from strength to strength, acting as the sole distributors throughout Ireland for Vitabri Canopies, a leading European manufacturer of quality portable aluminium-framed canopies, tables and display units.

Priding itself on its close ties with the funeral industry throughout Ireland, GM Canopies continue to provide multi purpose canopies for the progressive Funeral Director. The company believes that the provision of a quality shelter for bereaved relatives during inclement weather conditions is an extension of the service which those called to the funeral profession value above all else. The canopies can provide an ideal shelter outside the funeral home or wake house and at the burial. They are widely used by Funeral Directors throughout the UK and Europe who wish to offer privacy and comfort during the funeral service.

Funeral Directors in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland who have purchased Vitabri

canopies thus far have been impressed with the quality, versatility and adaptability of the product.

The canopies are also widely used by Parish and Church Committees for a wide range of indoor and outdoor functions, including Dedication Services, Remembrance Services and Cemetery Sunday Services. Another key use is the provision of privacy when opening and closing graves or in the event of an inhumation, as well as cover when engraving, cleaning or repairing headstones.

Direct Cremation Toolkit helps funeral directors meet changing demand

SAIF has recently launched a special toolkit to help funeral directors educate the public about the differences between direct cremations and other funeral options, regardless of whether they are members of what is now the UK’s largest trade association dedicated to representing independent companies.

SAIF’s Direct Cremation Toolkit is now available online at https://saif.org.uk/respondingto-the-changing-funeral-market/#problem and includes a range of materials that funeral directors can use in marketing and community engagement. For example, a light-hearted video, which can be branded with a funeral director’s own company logo can be used to promote the importance of gathering with friends and relatives to remember someone who has died.

The film features a late farmer whose herd of cattle walk in procession to the crematorium behind his coffin. The play on words ‘A mooving funeral can really help your herd say goodbye’ is intended to help the public engage with a serious topic in a non sombre way.

In another section of the toolkit, there is a set of resources aimed at enabling funeral directors to give talks to different community groups.

This includes talk notes that provide a topic guide covering recent regulatory changes to funerals, the latest trends and links to research on the

impact on grief of unattended funerals during the pandemic. There is also a PowerPoint presentation containing slides that can be adapted and branded accordingly.

On top of this, there are two template letters that funeral directors can use to engage local clergy and celebrants and Members of Parliament. The clergy letter includes an invitation to jointly participate in a community talk in order to share further perspectives on the value of gathering to say goodbye.

The MP letter explains the direct cremation trend and funeral directors’ fears about what this means for bereaved people. The letter ends with a call to action to meet at the funeral director’s premises or attend a talk to learn more.

Another feature of the toolkit is a series of case studies describing how three different funeral directors are offering direct cremation. Each approach varies slightly but a key learning is that by not making this service available, there’s a risk that small firms will lose market share to

national providers. This then denies families the opportunity to have their deceased relative cared for locally and arrange chapel of rest visits. Finally, the toolkit contains marketing materials for a new campaign titled Let’s Talk About Direct Cremation, which aims to get funeral directors and the public talking about different types of funeral and what they entail. The objective is to ensure clients fully understand what attended and unattended services include and omit.

SAIF has designed the Direct Cremation Toolkit to purposely include a wide variety of elements in recognition of the range of possible approaches individual businesses could take.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that unattended funerals now account for between 11% and 18% of funerals depending on where you are in the UK. All funeral directors should consider how this trend might affect their current business model and develop a suitable response.

Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke

Walk To Remember

Step up this September on World Heart Day in tribute to our loved ones lost to a chest, heart or stroke illness, and in support of the as many as 1 in 3 people across NI currently living with one of these devastating health conditions.

Join the Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke team for a sunset stroll around the lake as we take a trip down memory lane at the beautiful Hillsborough Forest Park, to reflect, remember and walk together to help change local lives now and save them in the future.

Setting off from outside Hillsborough Fort, our 2K event is a very special gathering for all, including our four-legged friends on leads. Enjoy the picturesque views across the water, where you can pause at

one of the platforms to gently throw in a memory stone and create a ripple of reflection for a lost loved one.

refreshments and a chat.

After returning to our starting point at dusk, we will be greeted by some special guests for music and a few short reflection readings. As the sun sets we will place thought candles and write messages of love to add to our Always In My Heart Memory Wall, pausing for one minute’s silence to remember.

Along the way, children (and the young at heart) will be entertained exploring the nature trail with the free information fact sheets provided, finding out more about the amazing new sculptures they discover hiding in the forest, and stopping off at our bird feeding station, where friends and family can also come together for

Almost 90% of all our work is exclusively funded by you, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us to be by the sides of families across Northern Ireland when they need us the most.

A failure to communicate (Part 1)

I love Paul Newman’s classic old movie in the role of “Cool Hand Luke” You may recall the prison warden’s famous line, “What we have here is a failure to communicate!”

How many times have you sat through seminars, committee or information meetings and come to a similar conclusion as that prison warden? Some presentations are captivating all right … you feel like they’ll go on forever, and there is no escape!

To say that communication has changed in recent years would be the understatement of the century. I plan to write TWO articles on this topic, Communication in your Workplace, and next time, Communication with your Community.

Workplace communication is an oftoverlooked factor in job satisfaction and employee well-being. Strained communication and lack of connection by employers’ can cause stress and anxiety for employees, leaving them nearly three times more likely to experience burnout. It can detract from job performance and lead to lower morale.

Effective communication, however, helps raise confidence, improve team-work and reduce work-related anxiety. Here are four crucial workplace skills to help avoid a failure to communicate.

1. Learn how to listen well

Being a good listener shows team members you’re engaged and reliable. It enhances everyone’s ability to absorb information more easily, respond more thoughtfully, and collaborate with less confusion.

Active listening involves paying close attention to what people are saying when they talk, making good eye contact and waiting for them to finish speaking before you respond. Try to stay engaged during video meetings by looking at your screen, offering nods and smiles and positive body language, rather than focussing on your phone. Asking thoughtful

questions is an essential part of listening which lead to collaborative brainstorming. Let your workers and managers know you hear them by responding with words of affirmation or validation like, “I see where you’re coming from,” or “That’s a great idea,”

2. Learn the art of emailing

Email is probably the most popular way to share information at work, so it’s critical to become a skilled email writer. Sending thoughtful, clear email messages can simplify work and make you more approachable. Here are some ideas for better email communication:

• Always edit your messages for clarity to get your point across in an informative but concise way. Eliminate unnecessary information and use simple, work-appropriate language. Include greeting people warmly and expressing gratitude for their help or efforts.

• It’s easy to misinterpret a person’s tone over email, so be careful not to jump to conclusions. Try to assume the best intentions. Approach every email with the goal of understanding, not blaming. You may need to ask questions for clarification or suggest a phone call to get on the same page.

• Working remotely is becoming increasingly common so it’s more critical than ever to learn how to collaborate with colleagues and clients from afar. Better collaboration leads to more productivity and happier teams. So make yourself available. Make sure your managers and team members know how and when to reach you by outlining which days and times are best for meetings or brainstorming sessions.

• Instead of operating on assumptions, ask clarification questions upfront and build in time for catch-up calls and progress updates. Being on the same page with your remote team is the key to success.

• When you’re collaborating remotely, it’s important that your team be able to depend

80 | FuneralTimes

on you. Do your best to be prompt for virtual meetings and respond to questions in a timely manner. Above all, exercise discretion. The tone you take and information you share at work depends on whom you’re speaking to and what type of situation you’re in. You can’t talk to everyone about everything. It’s never wise to gossip about coworkers or management, but it’s completely acceptable to approach your manager or HR director to discuss your mental health or other concerns.

3. Communication Skills

Company leaders, managers and supervisors can set the tone for creating a culture of positive, open communication in workplace by “communicating with empathy”, which is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

I realize this is not the traditional management style which tended to be more authoritative and even intimidating. Some may think that such methods are still necessary, but to those I would only ask “How’s that working for you?” Times have changed, especially since the pandemic. I suggest that imparting empathy into your communication helps employees feel supported and cared about, which is usually a great motivator.

• Work on understanding employees’ points of view. Ask them what they need to thrive at work.

• Respond to questions and concerns with compassion and kindness.

• Express support for employees who are

struggling. It can be as simple as saying “I hear your concerns,” or “How can I help?”

• Be inclusive, which in communications comes down to the “language you use, the tone you adopt, and the subjects you discuss.”

• Check in with your employees regularly, and pay particular attention to people who are part of marginalized groups. Use language that doesn’t exclude, offend or hurt others.

• Foster a sense of belonging by uniting everyone in a common goal.

4. Support employee mental health

One of the best ways to be an effective and compassionate communicator is to show employees you support their mental well-being.

• Encourage employees to take advantage of available mental health resources, such as wellness platforms, counsellors or paid leave days.

• Create space to have conversations, support and education about mental health issues.

• Observe your employees’ behaviour and try to notice signs of burnout, depression or other stressful symptoms.

• Remember, sometimes hearing is not enough. Listen and then “act” when employees are having a tough time. So, back to the Paul Newman movie. A “failure to communicate” finally got Cool Hand Luke shot and killed. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! But if you practice these suggestions, your management will be more effective and your workplace happier.

Dr. Bill Webster understands grief not just in theory, but also from personal experience. In his book, “First you Hurt, Then you Heal”, Dr. Bill outlines a road map for the grief journey in a series of articles that take us through the process .

He begins with a chapter entitled “I Didn’t Plan for This” that gives people an understanding of what they may experience in the early days after a loss. The book then goes on to give us an understanding of grief, some insights into various situations of loss, and some strategies to help us work through the process.

This book will be a helpful resource for those who are going through a grief process as well as containing much relevant and practical information for those who would like to know what they can say and how they can help someone who has experienced a significant loss. It will also serve as a basic knowledge and layman’s guide for those in the helping professions such as nurses, teachers, funeral directors and those who seek to support grieving people, young and old, through their work. “First you Hurt, Then you Heal” provides practical, down to earth and effective insight into one of the most difficult topics and most misunderstood experiences of life.

Introducing Faith Without Borders Funeral Services

Faith

Without Borders are three Interfaith Ministers based in Leinster, who offer spiritual/religious and nonreligious funerals outside the traditional Church setting to people of all Faiths and none. They were ordained by OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation in 2020 on completion of a two-year study programme which covered all major religions, spiritual guidance and the art of serving people through ceremony. Not affiliated to any one religion and when officiating ceremonies, they work with and support the faith/belief path of the family or individual they are serving. The ceremonies allow people from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds to come

together and honour the life of the deceased.

Recently they carried out a survey on Funerals in Ireland today. The results very clearly showed that while people do want a change they are largely unaware of their options outside of the traditional route. For example, when asked if they were familiar with the term Civil Funeral, 74% said not they were not, and of the 26% who said yes, the vast majority said that their understanding was that it was a non-religious service. In a further question 65% indicated that personal preferences would be very important to them when planning a funeral. There was also a high indication of people who would like a mixture of both

religious and non-religious elements included, plus more family participation, especially when it comes to the Eulogy. The QR code below will lead you to the survey results if you wish to see them in full.

Our world is ever changing, people’s needs and wishes are in many ways turning from the old ‘traditional ways’ and are looking towards more bespoke services. This is very true in the funeral industry; people are looking to new ways to celebrate and remember their loved ones and to mourn together in a more personalised and less formal way. It is the aim of Faith

Without Borders to meet this need with heartfelt empathy in a professional and supportive manner.

Introducing the Funeral Suppliers’ Association

The only trade association solely representing manufacturers’, suppliers and service providers to the funeral industry

Formed some 80 plus years ago the Funeral Furnishing Manufacturers’ Association (FFMA) was always seen as a trade body for coffin manufacturers. However, over the past three years membership has grown and now represents a wide range of providers of services to the funeral industry.

Yes, coffin manufacturers but also Celebrants, Clothing Manufacturer & Supplier, Professional Counsellors, a Memorial Mason, Refrigeration Specialists and Installers, Mortuary Equipment, Funeral Vehicle Specialist, Insurance Brokers, MotorCycle Funerals, Funeral Service Journal and a Crematorium Group among others. Full list here https:// funeralsuppliers.uk/members/

To reflect the increase, and growing diversity, in membership it was decided to re-brand the association.

Of course, rebranding a trade association is not easy. Not only is a new name needed but also a new logo which represents the group’s work. No easy task!

However, such work has been undertaken and following consultation with members the Funeral Suppliers’ Association (FSA) was born in June 2022.

Why the growth? The FSA is recognised as a leading trade association which represents its members on the Deceased Management Advisory Group and at the All Party Parliamentary Group on Funerals & Bereavement as well as having a higher profile through articles and advertising in the trade press. The FSA is also recognised at

Government level, continuing to work with the UK Administrations through and beyond the Pandemic where, at the outset little thought was given to how a funeral is delivered and the contribution made by those providing a necessary service but whose work goes unseen.

Four meetings are held each year where a large number of the membership come together to network and share information on their businesses.

A small number of our members come from Northern and Southern Ireland and we would like to grow our Association in these areas.

If you are reading this and are a provider of services to the funeral industry please contact Alun Tucker at: chiefexec@ffma.co.uk for information on becoming a member.

Go as you please, literally

If you are dealing with the relatives of a fan of anything from the Kerry team to a champion ploughman, a company called Go as You Please can supply a custom designed coffin depicting the idol(s) of their departed loved one.

They have had some unusual requests but that is what they cater for. Scott Purvis of that company told me, “One customer wanted to use our service to honour her mother Cleopatra’s “young and free spirit”. She told us, ‘She meant everything to me and we were very close in age, so we would always share likes and dislikes, and we were both obsessed with the Harry Potter world.” Cleopatra, 54, had said she wanted a pink coffin decorated with diamante - but her daughter opted for a design that superimposed her mother’s face on to a broomstick-riding Harry Potter playing quidditch. Amira said: “She would have been absolutely in love with it. I get a feeling of fulfilment from it, because I’ve done my job and I’ve done it right for her.” Chambers, 49, said: “We’re trying to get people to

talk about death because it really isn’t talked about enough. It’s a starting point for conversation.”

If you feel that the request that you get is OTT don’t worry. Scott says.” This bespoke process encourages you to be as creative as you wish – from your loved one’s favourite hobby or sports team to a notable achievement, we can cater to pretty much any request. We want you to be involved in as much of the design process as possible as we find that it helps our families to better come to terms with the loss of their loved one by giving them something to focus on.

If the deceased was a person who had dug their own grave with the knife and fork you could suggest the Sausage Roll coffin. If like myself, the dear departed admired and even identified with Del Boy what could be more appropriate than an Only Fools and Horses coffin. No matter how extreme your customer request is don’t dismiss it until you contact Scott. You’ll find him at: scott@goasyouplease.com

And mention me. Who knows, maybe when my time comes I’ll get a discount on my Del Boy coffin.
