ANNUAL REPORT 2023

A Message From Our Board

It may seem like public schools have one job: to provide children with an extraordinary education. But today’s public schools do so much more than that. They provide opportunities for kids to learn social skills, they provide safe spaces for children to grow, and they provide an essential safety net for kids’ wellbeing.

When the Fund for Public Education was founded in 2007, most of our funding went to “extras”, things like special classroom projects and field trips that supplemented each child’s educational experience. While we still provide those extras, today the majority of our funding goes toward children’s basic needs including physical, mental, and emotional wellness.

In the last five years, requests for support through our mental health program, the Jean Coldsmith Fund, have tripled. The unmet need covered by our student meal program, Feeding the Whole, has grown from $35,000 annually to more than $250,000. And dozens of local kids rely on our dental and orthodontic programs as their only means of receiving care.

Our community is changing rapidly. Need is growing. And our public schools have become the frontline of support for hundreds of families. The Fund for Public Education is here to enable and ensure that support, and we need your help.

Over the next three years, one of our primary goals is to develop an endowment that will support Teton County’s public schools in perpetuity. We need to ensure that essential programs, like free meals and child wellness, will always be available for every child. We need to be prepared for growth in our community and in our schools. We need to invest in a solid future for our kids, our schools, and our community.

Please grow with us. Join us in supporting FOREVERSCHOOLS.

ABOUT THE FUND FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION

The Fund for Public Education is a 501(c)3 nonprofit school foundation. Our sole mission is to support Teton County School District #1’s schools, teachers, staff, and students. We do this by raising funds to cover budgetary gaps and providing resources in five key areas:

“The Fund for Public Education provides essential support for our schools. They make amazing projects and programs possible and connect donors with our schools, giving the community important opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of our students, staff, and teachers.”

WHOLE-CHILD WELLNESS EDUCATIONAL EQUITY ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT CAPACITY

2007

OUR HISTORY

Teton County Education Foundation is created as a pass-through organization to manage an exaction given to Teton County School District in support of teacher housing.

Working with a part-time, contract based Executive Director, the Foundation begins to award small classroom grants from Old Bill’s Fun Run donations.

The Foundation’s board develops a new vision for the organization. The first full time Executive Director is hired, the name is changed to Fund for Public Education, new programs are developed, and we begin fundraising to support TCSD programs.

As the COVID-19 pandemic hits the nation, the Fund responds by raising more than $700,000 for the schools’ emergency needs. Annual fundraising begins to top $1M.

The Fund launches FOREVER SCHOOLS, a $14M capital campaign to support district capacity and build an organizational endowment. This is in direct response to the growing needs of TCSD.

A LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

I am incredibly grateful for your support of the Fund for Public Education. Each student in our school district benefits directly from you when you support the Fund for Public Education.

In the Teton County School District, we are growing great thinkers, leaders, innovators, and stewards of our nation. As the community has developed new housing, we recognize that our facilities must keep pace with growth. Our staff need affordable and accessible housing so their focus can be on educating our students each day. Our facilities were not designed with the needs of 21st century education and we are seeking ways to customize learning for each student. That means the physical spaces need to inspire and support the robust courses so that our students can be successful in this world.

The Fund for Public Education is a critical partner with us and having an endowment will ensure our students can continue to access high quality education and spaces that prepare them for a lifetime of learning ahead. Because of this amazing community, our graduates earned local scholarships of more than $1M that show them we believe in them, we care for them, and we are inspired by them. Thank you for your ongoing support for ForeverSchools and each student in the Teton County School District.

Dr. Gillian Chapman, TCSD#1 Superintendent

This three-year capital campaign launched in 2023 with the goal of raising $14M to build DISTRICT CAPACITY, STAFF HOUSING, and a LASTING ENDOWMENT.

BUILDING DISTRICT CAPACITY

Based on the new housing units that are planned in Teton County, experts estimate that the number of students in our school district could double in the next ten years. With current schools already operating near capacity, we need to be prepared.

The District Capacity fund of FOREVER SCHOOLS looks to raise $4M over the next three years to enable the building of:

NEW CLASSROOMS AND ACADEMIC SPACES

SPECIALIZED VOCATIONAL LABS

IMPROVED FACILITIES FOR SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES

BETTER TRASNPORTATION FACILITIES

Join us at the Center for the Arts on October 3rd, 2023 from 5-7pm to learn more about FOREVERSCHOOLS and how you can support upcoming district projects.

BUILDING STAFF HOUSING

The number one reason staff leave TCSD#1 is the lack of affordable and attainable housing in our community. In order to attract and retain the best teachers, we need to provide them with sustainable housing that can accomodate growing families and growing careers.

The FOREVERSCHOOLS Staff Housing fund seeks $3M to suplement $16M that has already been secured. These funds will be used to build affordable one, two, and three bedroom rental units for TCSD teachers and staff. The site, near Jackson Hole Middle School, was selected for affordability, access, and its low impact on the surrounding community.

The project is scheduled to break ground in the 2023-2024 school year.

DID YOU KNOW?

If you’re buying or selling a home in Teton County, you can support the FOREVERSCHOOLS Staff Housing initiatives through the Teton Board of Realtors Community Housing Fund.

Make your donation at the time of closing and our partners at TBOR will combine your gift with those of other home owners for ever greater impact. Visit communityhousingfund.com to learn more.

A very special thanks to former TCSD#1 Trustee and retired teacher Alan Brumsted and his wife Nancy for making the founding contribution to this fund.

COMMUNITY HOUSING FUND

BUILDING A LASTING ENDOWMENT

FOREVERSCHOOLS is raising $7M over the next three years to build a crucial endowment. This fund will support the foundation, secure the future of key programs, and provide the school district with a vital reserve.

“The ability to build an endowment is one of the most powerful tools our community has in the fight to secure a bright future for our kids. It ensures that our schools always have the tools and resources they need to overcome any challenge.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: FEEDING THE WHOLE

High resort wages, combined with a high cost of living, means that many families in Jackson Hole don’t qualify for federal Free and Reduced Meal Programs, but still need help.

Feeding the Whole is an innovative partnership between TCSD#1 and the Fund for Public Education that ensures no child goes hungry. It provides direct assistance to more than 600 students and supports the district as a whole through:

FREE MEALS FOR KIDS IN NEED

SCHOOL LUNCH DEBT RELIEF

FRESH FRUIT & VEGGIE SNACKS

COMPOSTABLE CONTAINERS TO REDUCE WASTE

SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT FOR DISTRICT FOOD SERVICE PROGRAMS

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demmand for this program grew exponentially. As the pandemic subsided, the need for free meals did not, which tells us that food insecurity continues to be a challenge locally.

Since 2019, the annual cost of this program has increased by more than 500% due to rising food costs and increased participation. Today, the program serves nearly 100,000 meals each year.

Feeding the Whole is open to all TCSD families. A quick is easy application is available at: FundForPublicEducation.org/school-meals The applications is free and completely confidential.

The Fund for Public Education and TCSD are also proud members of the Jackson Hole Food Collaborators , a group of more than a dozen local organizations working to eliminate hunger in our community.

A special thanks to Bank of Jackson Hole for supporting meal programs throughout our community.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: DENTAL WELLNESS

The Fund for Public Education and TCSD#1 offer two comprehensive dental wellness programs for students. Love Your Teeth provides oral health education, free in-school dental screenings for K-5 students, and free dental care for any K-12 student in need. Straighten Up provides free orthodontic care for children whose orthodontic issues interfere with their speech, their ability to chew, or their ability to succeed in school. Together, these two programs provide a vital lifeline for hundreds of kids and families, many of whom have no other access to dental care.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS WHO MAKE THESE PROGRAMS POSSIBLE.

SPOTLIGHT: FERNANDA COSTILLA CORREA

In 2023 the Teton County Scholarship Program awarded more than $1 Million to local students. The program, which is co-administered by the Fund for Public Education and the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, in partnership with TCSD#1, includes more than 60 scholarships sponsored by local businesses, organizations, and individuals. This year, that translated into more than 250 unique awards given to 128 exceptional students.

We’d like to give you a chance to meet one of these amazing students and hear from her in her own words.

Fernanda Costilla Correa graduated from Jackson Hole High School in June, 2023 and is headed to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. When we spoke to Fernanda, she was busy completing a summer internship at the University of Utah’s Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City.

FPE: Fernanda, could you tell us a little about your plans for the future?

FCC: I’m studying neuroscience in my undergrad and then will be applying to medical school to be a surgeon in the future.

FPE: What were your goals when applying to the Teton County Scholarship Program?

FCC: Money and the cost of college was a big consideration when I was applying. My goal was to get as many scholarships as possible so that I can enter medical school with as little debt as possible.

FPE: How do you feel about the fact that the Teton County Scholarship Program is local? It’s really about our community supporting and connecting with students like yourself.

FCC: During my four years of high school, I spent of lot of time helping my community and so I found it really cool that the community is wiling to help students, too. I think that connection between community members and the students is awesome.

FPE: How will the scholarships you won through the Teton County Scholarship Program impact your life moving forward?

FCC: These awards are the key to a door that leads to success because many students who apply need the money in order to do great things. Just the opportunity to go to college is a really big gift, but these awards let us reach for that next step.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Each year, I have the great pleasure of meeting hundreds of kids and getting to know their stories. They constantly suprise and inspire me, both with the scope of their dreams and the tenacity with which they work to achieve them.

This year I witnessed a third grader holding her best friend’s hand through a dental exam because was her friend was scared. At the end, teeth clean and healthy, they hugged to celebrate their victory.

I listened as kids shared their favorite ways to help the community, everything from keeping our rivers clean, to feeding the hungry, to making sure that our elderly neighbors are never lonely or forgotten.

I saw a group of highschool students plan a fundraiser so they could purchase furniture and supplies for a classroom in Africa that had none.

I applauded as new graduates celebrated their classmates for winning scholarships, even if they hadn’t won themselves.

I watched as students broke barriers, overcame challenges, and soared to new heights. And they did it together, helping and supporting and cheering one another on every step of the way.

This made me realized that we, as a community, are doing something right. We’re raising smart, kind, strong kids who know where they’re going.

At the Fund for Public Education, we ensure that every child can focus on what matters. We provide a safety net so that no one has to go without. We support kids on the path to becoming the wonderful people they are meant to be. And great donors like you make that possible.

Thank you for supporting the nearly 3,ooo students who make our schools exceptional.
