+ Palm Sunday:
Today Sunday 13th April is Palm Sunday. We celebrate the victorious entry of our Lord to Jerusalem. On that day also, He presented Himself as a meek lamb prepared for slaughter for our salvation. People received him crying Hosanna Son of David. Let us today prepare our hearts to receive Him through real repentance, good deeds and prayers. Let us declare in eagerness that He is our Saviour. Hosanna in the Highest.
+ Passion Week:
This is the Holiest week of the year. On the past, people used to consecrate all their times during their week for worship and contemplation. Church services used to be continues during day and night with very little time for rest. Let us sanctify ourselves and our times to follow the steps of our Saviour on His way to the Golgotha and the Cross. Abstaining from food should be up to sunset or as directed by your father of confession. You should not resort to any sort of indulgence such as Television or picnics or fancy foods. Just fix your eyes and attention to the Cross of the Lord. Follow Him in His Passions to rejoice also in His resurrection.

Christ Has Risen. Truly He Has Risen
The Blessed Palm Sunday
Today is Sunday 13th April 2025- 5th Paramoute 1741 AM. It is the Palm Sunday and the four Gospels’ readings are from )Mt. 21: 1-17(, )Mk. 11: 1-11(, )Lk. 19: 29-48(, and )Jn. 12:1219(.
The Gospels talked about the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem in a humble procession, riding on a donkey and a colt of a donkey, but He is frightened and is feared that the whole city trembled at Him, saying: ‘Who is He?’ Crowds greeted Him with joy and love, waving palm and tree branches, spreading their clothes on the road. The crowd started with the children screaming ‘Hosanna to the Son of David Hosanna in the highest, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’ The stiff hearts rejected Him and complained about Him, but simple hearts rejoiced with Him and spread their clothes and hearts for Him. Hence, we find three types of people greeted the Lord and received Him in Jerusalem; there are those who rejoiced and declared Him as their King, those that murmured about Him, and there are those who do not care on these occasions except for their personal gain and material satiety
The first type is the bearers of the palm branches; simple, loving hearts that rejoiced with Him. They started singing and proclaiming their faith in Him that He is their King and Saviour, hearts ready for Him. They saw in Him the God who filled their souls and their bodies. They saw in him the Lord, the Saviour, who heals them from the death of sin and the body. They felt Him suffer for their pain, share their sorrows, and carry their troubles. They saw Him sweet, gentle, tender, and happy, and their hearts were attached to him. They saw him caring, kind and joyful; hence their hearts were attached to Him. St. Anthony heard His commandment to the rich young man, and it ignited in his heart a sweeping love that he set out with it into the wilderness, attracting behind him a host of earthly angels, who transformed the desert into a new heaven. Saint Mary of Egypt felt His love and his gentle rebuke for her sins, so she left with strong love everything
and perfumed the deserts with the scent of her spiritual struggle and her love for her Heavenly Groom.
The amazing procession of love that began on Palm Sunday never stopped, but every day many people from the east to the west join it from every nation, tribe, and tongue carrying white palm branches as a sign of their joy in the life of victory in Christ; their Saviour and Redeemer, as they washed their clothes in His blood. And so they threw their clothes i.e. their lives under His feet as an offering of love to Him Who went to the crucifixion for their sake. They carried tree branches announcing the wondrous peace in which they live despite renouncing the world and despising its desires. It is a life of victory, glory, and peace. Have your heart tasted His wondrous love for you? Come and participate in the procession of love, with simplicity of heart and faith, to live with Him triumphant and joy in peace. The second ones are the people who reproach children. They care about appearances more than spirituality. Their whole lives are wasted in maintaining the appearance even if the appearance of worship will deprive them from tasting its beauty. Just like the seller of sweets who praises its beauty and sweetness but never tastes it. Many people keep the appearance of fasting very firm, so they search about the finer components of the food so that they would not break their fast, but unfortunately they never tasted the sweetness and depth of fasting. When a conversation is mentioned about the Coptic Church, for example, you hear from them wonderful enthusiastic words about the glory of the Church, its spirituality, originality, strength, her great fathers and her heroic martyrs, but they do not taste anything from it; it is only the external enthusiasm. They are like keepers of treasures defending them and well they do, but they do not enjoy them. Rather, they stand at the doors they do not enter and not let anyone to enter. How many times do we miss irreplaceable opportunities for repentance and life of right
eousness just because of our love for appearances? There are those who are willing to work in the church day and night if asked to do so, but they cannot afford to attend one whole Mass or participate in meditation or spiritual training. Such people may still practice their mission very actively at the gates while those who come from the east and west precede them to taste the sweetness of Christ and precede them to heaven. Remember that Judas was carrying the treasure box and followed the Lord Jesus for years and watched all His miracles and heard all His teachings, but unfortunately he perished. Remember that Esau was the brother of Jacob and he was the firstborn, but he lost the blessing and firstborn privileges. Remember the left thief was as close to the Saviour God as the right thief, but he perished. There were many people under the cross and many who followed the Lord to Calvary, but how many of them were saved? The third type, the people with personal benefits. The sellers and the money changers were not occupied with anything but financial gains. It does not matter where; rather what matters is the quantity. How easy it is for the church to turn into a commercial market under the pretext of collecting funds for projects or for the poor. How easy it is to turn Spiritual gatherings to merely entertaining and spending time under the pretext of attracting greater numbers to the Church. It is the right hand blow of the quantity that many fall into. The Lord has never seen silver and gold of the rich while ringing inside the boxes, but He saw and felt two pennies drenched with tears of love and the sweat of love. God does not count the seats that are in the churches nor does He weigh the full boxes of giving, but searches for the humble hearts of repentance. We may rejoice at the hundreds present in the churches, but perhaps the heart of the Lord is grieving for the thousands who are outside who do not know their right from the left. How difficult for the house of prayer to become a den of thieves! A very difficult and painful expression, but it alerts us to care for ourselves lest we have forgotten the goal of the church’s services which is in Uniting with Christ and setting off in his victory parade. Let us cry out to him fervently saying: ‘Hosanna to the Son of David, Hosanna in the highest.’
How to Benefit Spiritually from Pascha Week
by H.H. Pope Shenouda III
How do we enjoy the most spiritual week of this year?
1. Our behavior inside and outside church:
It is very noticeable that many people during Passion Week act very differently inside church than they do outside church. Inside church… black curtains, sad hymns, solemn readings, and complete concentration on the suffering of Christ. However, outside of church, we often laugh, joke around, socialize, think and talk about many worldly issues. We lose all the spiritual depth that we gained inside church. Let us concentrate our thoughts, conversations, and meditations around the events of this Holy Week and the passion of our Savior.
2. Retreat:
During our regular fasting days, we put the words of the Bible before us, “Consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly “ )Joel 1: 14(. How much more then should we apply this commandment during Holy Week? This week should be characterized by solitude and retreat with God by staying away from idle discussions, various means of entertainment and pleasures. Reserve your time for God and to spiritual activities worthy of this week.
3. Follow the steps of Christ:
Meditate on the events of the week one by one, from Palm Sunday when Christ refused His worldly kingdom and the Jews gave up their hopes in Him, until they crucified and buried Him. On Palm Sunday, ask yourself: Is Christ King and Lord over everything in my life? Do I, like Christ, turn down worldly glory for spiritual and eternal glory? And during the “general funeral” afterwards, consider yourself attending your own funeral )because during this week the church will not hold funeral services(. Also, when the church denounces Judas’ betrayal with a kiss on the eve of Wednesday’s Pascha, ask yourself in prayer, “How often, O Lord, have I betrayed You?” “How many times have I told You words of love in prayers, while my actions show the opposite and my heart is far away from You?”
4. Share in the fellowship of His suffering:
St. Paul said “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His suffering, being conformed to His death” )Philippians 3:10(. Can we give ourselves an exercise this week to share in the fellowship of His suffering and be conformed to His death? )source of this article: St-Takla.org( Can we follow Him in His suffering and ascend with Him to the cross? Can we say with St. Paul “With Christ I have been crucified; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” )Gal. 2:20(. Therefore, in order for Christ to live in us, we have to carry our cross and follow Him. If you have a cross in your life, don’t complain about it, but rather rejoice in it and bear it for Christ’s sake. “For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him but to suffer for His sake” )Phil. 1:29(
5. Asceticism:
Whoever puts the suffering of Christ before Him will not take any pleasure in eating, drinking or pampering the body. But in order to succeed in pursuing asceticism, we must satisfy our souls with spiritual food so that it may thrive and overcome physical hunger.
6. Spiritual readings:
Spiritual readings are also food for the soul. The church has organized for us a treasure of appropriate readings for every day of Holy Week. This consists of Gospel readings, Old Testament prophecies that correspond to the events of each day, spiritual explanations and sermons of the church fathers and on Holy Saturday )Apocalypse night( the church reads the entire book of Revelation.
7. Hymns:
The hymns of Passion Week are moving and full of spiritual depth. Also, Hymns, like reading, preserve thoughts from wandering and guides them in a spiritual direction.
8. Prayer:
Since the prayers of the Agpeya are not used during Holy Week, we are to substitute personal prayers in their place. This is in addition to the intensive prayers of the church asking the Lord, who bore the sins of the world and died for us, to forgive and have mercy upon us according to His great mercy.
The Book of the Journey from Jerusalem to Calvary
Late very reverend Father Bishoy Kamel 1- Week of the anointment
The events of the last week are tensed with feelings of God’s love for us to the end, and fraught with the emotions of the pain of His sad soul until death. These infinite feelings in the Lord’s affection towards man are inexpressible in words. Hence, the divine revelation began by replacing the language of speech with the language of fragrance. The perfume spreads quickly and carries with it a gentle euphoria, which is the most accurate expression of God’s infinite love for us in the midst of the intensity of his pain. The pouring of perfume is a work in exchange for the sacrifice, and the sacrifice is an outpouring of the soul, and when the soul is poured out of it a beautiful aroma is poured out. This is how the Lord did this week, and the scent of his sacrifice spread throughout the entire world. So from above the cross he gave his beloved Son and this made martyrs, and the sweet scent of Jesus arose from them. Therefore, today we have to make something; pour out and sacrifice.
The Lord poured out Himself and broke His body and gave it to His disciples and to us! Again He poured himself out when He placed himself on the feet of His disciples to wash them! Moreover, He poured out his love when He gave the traitor a piece of bread!
And on the cross He poured Himself out for those who stripped Him, stabbed Him, spat in His face, and flogged Him. For their sake He died, and for their sake He sought forgiveness.
2- Palm Sunday Eve
On the Sabbath - as the Gospel says: “Six days before Passover” )John 12: 1-3( Mary poured ointment on the feet ) ( of the Lord. This incident is repeated in Bethany, “After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread … And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper ...” )Mark 14: 1-5(
From here we see that the divine arrangement is to repeat the pouring of perfume at the beginning of the journey to Calvary ... and in the middle of the road ... and to preach this work with the preaching of the Gospel. Hence, this service will anoint the whole world, and in our spiritual worship we may learn immortal lessons.
3- Anointment service is a service of love: Incense smells delightful and spread quickly, so is love that smells delicious and quickly spreads. Our Lord said about the sinful woman: “This woman loved so much” )Luke Luke 7:47(. Every work for the sake of Christ mixed with love . turns into good. Let us, my brothers, love God with all the heart and love our brothers in mankind fervently with a pure heart )1 Pet 1:22(, and we do all our deeds with love for all. (, 4. Anointing service is a service of quite prayer
It is a service of feelings, not a service of speech. It is a silent service. Mary was sitting at His feet listening. It is a service that the Lord Jesus and the woman understand; and the woman only, but its smell must be spread and everyone must smell this service. It is a quiet bedroom prayer far
from the noise of Jerusalem. It is the service of the poor or a cup of cold water.
The ointment service has finished in Bethany )meaning the house of the humble poor(, and this service was not carried (, out in the midst of the noise of Jerusalem, in the houses of Bethany - the houses of the poor, oil of spikenard was poured which cost 300 denarii and everyone smelled its scent. On the other hand, in the temple of Jerusalem was the pigeon trade, the money changers’ tables, the pride of the chiefs, and everyone was smelling the foul smell of treachery and deceit.
5- Serving the good is the service of humblness and a sense of being in debt.
The Magdalene woman poured the ointment on His feet and behind it while she was weeping. It is a service of a human being owed to Christ for her salvation. “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty... he freely forgave them both”. The woman for her sins is the owner of a great debt - and the Lord forgave her - a service in which it is not sufficient to pour out perfume, but to wash the feet with tears.
The service of the ointment reveals to us that repentance starts at the feet of Christ, in a spirit of humility, a sense of debt, and abundant tears.
6- Serving of ointment reveals the value of the Lord in our life
The value of the Lord in the life of Judas was 30 silver = 3 Egyptian pounds, which is the value of a slave, but for the woman, it was equal to all that she had, even to 300 dinarii )Mark 14: 5(. The strange thing is that the two incidents ( happened at the same moment. Here It is clear that faithful souls sacrifice everything for the sake of the Lord Jesus ’commandment, and the treacherous souls sell the commandment of Christ for the sake of temporary pleasure and a small temporary gain. Our love to Jesus is evident in the extent of our sacrifice - and in how much we sacrifice or lose for Jesus and His commandment.
7- Serving of ointment is a shrouding service for the Lord
This scent will remain attached to the body of the Lord Jesus )because it was poured two days before Passover(. It is a (. beautiful service like the service of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. It is the service of souls that loved to share the Lord on the night of His sufferings instead of the disciples who slept, those who fled, and those who denied. Acts of mercy and tender love delight the heart of the Lord and become ointment for His burial in the midst of the severity of His sufferings for the multitude of sins of His children. Therefore, my brethren, the more evil is around us - even among the children of God - the more we must pour out ointment.
8- Anointment service is a permanent service that defies death
The disciples fled at the cross, St. John continued to Golgotha. But the woman who poured the ointment, she stayed with the Lord at the cross and went with him to the tomb, and at dawn on Sunday darkness, she took her ointment and her feelings to put them on the tomb – with all hope in that one would roll the stone for her.
Those who farewelled Christ when he delivered His soul on the cross, ceased their hope because He died, the disciples
were afraid, and those who arrived at Calvary left their hope there because there was nothing left before them but death. But those who continued the service of worship, love and contempt; their hope reached beyond death; to the afterlife. Thus, worshiping souls open their hearts to look to eternity, they rejoice in Christ their hope, that challenges death and the present world. They pass sufferings and experiences of the world through faith of life in Christ, in which there is never death, but life, love, joy and peace.
9- Anointment service is not a waste
Prayer is nothing less than building great institutions, and serving the poor is not less than building cathedrals. The service of St. Anthony, Paul and Macarius living better for the church from the cathedrals of the great emperors - monasticism is not a ruin, and the service of prayer in Sunday Schools is not less than the service of preaching, but rather more important.
Prayer service is not a ruin. Many liturgies are not ruin. Social services today are invading the churches under the pretext that too much prayer is a waste, and we need to work. In fact, work devoid of prayer is fraught with selfishness and subjectivity, and it becomes not a ruin but a curse for the Church.
10- The Divine purpose of the journey from Jerusalem to Calvary
Certainly, God’s intention of His incarnation and His life on earth, His entry into Jerusalem, and His crucifixion is to free us from our enemy the devil. After which He reigns over our heart so we enter into His kingdom and enjoy life with Him. We become His children; the King’s children. This is the subject of our journey from His entry into Jerusalem as a meek King on a colt, to His elevation on the cross, to reign on a tree” )Psalm 95: 1. - Agpeya(, and attracts everyone to Him. Psalm
11- Palm Sunday and the King Christ
When our Lord entered, they received him as a king with palm branches and spread the clothes, and shouted, Hosanna to the king of Israel. The Lord entered the city to reign; and this kingship is not an easy matter because:
1- The enemy is fierce.
2- The enemy has material capabilities, while the reign of Christ is spiritual.
3- The battle on the enemy’s ground “the ruler of this world.”
12- Christ as King at his birth
The princes )the Magi( came to him prostrating to Him and ) gave Him their gold and said to Herod, Where is the Newborn King of the Jews? But our King, Christ, was humble and fled before Herod to Egypt. He is a strange king who has no place in the inn )Luke 2: 7(. This point is very, very im- 7 . im portant to the Church at all times - Our Christ is a King but a stranger from the world, He has no place to lay His head. Woe to the Church that believes in its material capabilities in the world and does not live a life of sojourners. The world will grab it and be left out of the ownership of the Sojourn king. This strange, humble king was rejected by the Jews, because He did not come as they wanted. My brothers, we must accept Christ as King, not as we want, but as He wants. We
accept him as a strange king rejected by the world. Christ is a King to the humble. Hence, let us be humble now in the church and be meek so that the Lord reigns over us “let your kingdom come.” Our Lord Jesus descended from the highest heaven and left its glories. He condescended to reign over my heart, my humble heart, is like the simplicity of the manger, who is estranged from the world that does not desire or fear it, who rejected all its offers. A heart waited for Christ to reign Amen. The manger is the place of the king’s government, and it has no decoration, hypocrisy, hatred, rage, anger, controversy, or impurity. All of it is purity like the purity of the Virgin. There is no complication, but the simplicity of the lamb and simple animals. A manger who have simple clothes such as the clothes of the Virgin and Shepherds, but distaste the clothes and dresses of the twenty first century 13- Christ as king as he entered Jerusalem
The events move at a speed faster than a person can track them. Matin s’ Gospel of Early Palm Sunday says: “O Zacchaeus, make haste and come down.” This means that the events of salvation are proceeding at tremendous speed, and whoever is late and do not accelerate will miss. This is the last time that Jesus passes through Jericho - the city of Zacchaeus - and if he does not hurry, he will not find Christ later.
The events are very fast, and always the zero hour is the dangerous moment in which the most dangerous work is done. The events from Palm Sunday to the Cross are terribly concentrated that the books of the whole world cannot comprehend. The zero hour is near, preparations are going very fast. A colt of a donkey is needed quickly as Zechariah the Prophet said: “Rejoice ...” )Zech 9: 9(. 9
14- Christ is a humble King
Humility is the first and basic condition for the King of Christ who rides on the colt, for the Lord Jesus is coming to reign over the humble and the children. 15- Christ is king over children’s hearts
The children are chanting with joy behind Christ while the leaders of the Jews are consumed by rage. Our Lord rejoiced in the spirit and said I “thank you, Father, for you revealed these things to children and hid them from the wise”
My Lord Jesus, I cry out to you with the children from the depth of my heart and say, O Lord, give me the heart of a child, the simplicity of a child, the openness of a child, the tolerance of a child, the love of a child. You said if you do not become like children you will not enter the kingdom. My Lord Jesus, I am terrified from this verse. The strange thing is that what hinders me from returning to childhood innocence is the importance of the work that I do - dealing with people who are not simple, and panic for my personal interests. Even though you, O Lord, Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have [b]ordained strength ... Because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger )Ps 8(. Oh Lord, give me this faith to walk with the heart of a child and believe that You are the owner of my life.

EVENTS OF PASSION WEEK:
PALM SUNDAY:
At that day the people of Israel used to choose the lamb of Passover and keep it for several days to be slaughtered at the Passover. The Lord entered Jerusalem at that day and was received by the people as the pure Lamb to be offered for our Salvation and was received and accepted as a Saviour by all the ·people.
PASCHA MONDAY:
During that week the Lord used to spend the day at the temple teaching and the evening at Bethany at the Mount of Olives. At the morning of that day the lord felt hungry and saw a fig tree with many leaves but no fruit and The Lord cursed this fruitless tree. On that day, the lord drove out all those who bought and sol!! in the temple and overturned their tables as: they defiled His House the House of Prayer.
PASCHA TUESDAY:
On the morning, the disciples saw the fig tree which was cursed by the Lord as· it dried up and withered away and marvelled. The Lord talked to the them about faith. The Lord answered the questions of the Pharisees about the taxes and Cesare money. The Lord talked to His disciples about His Second Coming and the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem.
PASCHA WEDNESDAY:
The Lord left the temple on Tuesday intending not to enter it again and so He spent that day at Bethany teaching His disciples. Main events are the betrayal of Juda as he went on that day to consult with the Jews how to deliver the Lord to them and they promised him thirty pieces of silver the price of a slave. In contrast, we witness the woman who poured the perfume on the Feet of the Lord
GREAT THURSDAY:
The day of slaughtering the lamb the eve of Passover which commemorate the exodus of the people of Israel from Egypt with The Mighty Hand of the Lord. On that day the Lord established for us the Eucharist not as a symbol but as the real Truth. The Lord also washed the feet of His disciples giving us an example to follow in Humbleness and denying oneself. At the evening, they went to the Garden where The Lord was delivered by the kiss of Juda and was arrested and tried during the night.
GOOD FRIDAY:
The day of the Crucifixion of our Lord. The Lord offered Himself as the acceptable burnt offering for the whole world.
JOYOUS SATURDAY:
A night to spend at Heaven to go in spirit with St John the Evangelist to watch and observe events of the eternity and the Glory of Heavens to wait with all the Heavenlies for our True Bridegroom.
GLORIOUS FEAST OF HOLY RESURRECTION:
Early Morning before sunrise we conclude this wonderful procession when we witness the Victorious Resurrection of our Lord announcing New Covenant and New Life conquering the death and paving our way to Heavens.
