Welcoming those gathered at the national Erasmus Student

The Erasmus Programme has a great value for the Polish higher education system. Participation in transnational exchange programmes is a major element in the process of introducing students and academic staff into the life of the European scholarly community. Erasmus encourages mobility already at the first level of university studies. It gives an opportunity not only to extend knowledge and establish first contacts in the international academic community, but also to develop practical foreign language skills and skills necessary to work together with people from various cultural backgrounds. It is an extremely important initiative which can always rely on support from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

MobilnoÊç obywateli obszaru europejskiego to jeden z najwa˝niejszych makropriorytetów Komisji Europejskiej.

To w∏aÊnie program Erasmus pokazuje w pe∏nej rozciàg∏oÊci, ile korzyÊci dla indywidualnych osób oraz systemu edukacyjnego p∏ynie z wymiany studentów i pracowników naukowych. Mobility of European citizens is one of the key macro-priorities of the European Commission. Erasmus is the programme which shows to the fullest extent how much individuals and the education system benefit from student and academic staff exchanges. Mobility enables the development of many key competences which are also a priority of the EU educational policy; these include: communication in foreign languages, entrepreneurship, ICT competence, and intercultural and interpersonal competences. Without these key competences, one could hardly function effectively in today’s globalised world so as to satisfy fully one’s learning, professional, cultural and personal needs. So, the Erasmus Programme evidently contributes towards the personal development of individuals and their openness to other cultures, thus extending considerably the area of tolerance and opportunities for communication on the continent which is so culturally and linguistically diverse.

President of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland What does the Erasmus Programme mean to you? And what can you say about opportunities which Erasmus creates for Polish universities?

Erasmus is the only programme which enables a significant number of Polish students to undertake a study period abroad (other opportunities are usually available to individuals or small groups). Erasmus is a student-friendly programme as it offers students considerable financial support and, through the Learning Agreement procedure, ensures the recognition of a study period undertaken abroad by the home institution.

In my opinion, benefits for participating students are self-evident, but also universities do themselves benefit from participation in the Programme, first of all, by establishing contacts and cooperation with foreign universities. Moreover, the Programme “forces” universities to look at how others train their students, and enables us to assess our approach to education through an analysis of how our students are doing in foreign universities. Erasmus also puts us under pressure to teach courses in the English language, which greatly enhances the attractiveness of universities in the international education market. The list of advantages, as you can see, could go on…

Co znaczy dla Pana program Erasmus i m o ˝ l i w o Ê ç u d z i a ∏ u w nim polskich szkó∏ wy˝szych?

Program Erasmus jest jedynym programem, który pozwala znaczàcej liczbie polskich studentów na odbycie cz´Êci studiów za granicà (inne mo˝liwoÊci dotyczà z regu∏y jednostek lub niewielkich grup). Program Erasmus jest przyjazny dla studentów, poniewa˝ daje im istotne wsparcie finansowe oraz, dzi´ki procedurze Learning Agreement, uznawalnoÊç okresu studiów za granica w uczelni macierzystej.

W moim przekonaniu dla studenta korzyÊci z udzia∏u sà oczywiste, ale same uczelnie te˝ korzystajà z udzia∏u w tym programie przede wszystkim poprzez nawiàzanie kontaktów i wspó∏pracy z uczelniami zagranicznymi. Poza tym program „zmusza” uczelnie do przyjrzenia si´ jak kszta∏cà inni, umo˝liwia tak˝e ocen´ naszego kszta∏cenia przez analiz´ tego, jak nasi studenci radzà sobie w uczelniach zagranicznych. Erasmus to program wymuszajàcy na nas oferowanie kursów w j´zyku angielskim, co zwi´ksza znacznie atrakcyjnoÊç uczelni na mi´dzynarodowym rynku edukacyjnym. Zalety, jak widzimy, mo˝na by mno˝yç…

Jakie jest znaczenie mobilnoÊci w przygotowaniu dobrego absolwenta?

Ma∏o by∏oby powiedzieç, ze jest ona wa˝na, bo tak naprawd´ jest niezb´dna. Ka˝dy m∏ody Europejczyk, jeÊli chce zrobiç karier´ zawodowà, musi w którymÊ momencie zetknàç si´ z mi´dzynarodowym Êrodowiskiem. Im wczeÊniej si´ to stanie, tym lepiej. Przez odbycie cz´Êci studiów za granicà student zyskuje otwartoÊç na prac´ w mi´dzynarodowym zespole, nabiera pewnoÊci siebie, ˝e on b´dzie sobie radzi∏ za granicà. JednoczeÊnie uczy si´ szacunku dla innych kultur, zwyczajów, doskonali znajomoÊç j´zyka obcego, staje si´ Europejczykiem w pe∏nym znaczeniu tego s∏owa.

Nie zapominajmy równie˝, ˝e mobilnoÊç studentów to szansa na niebywa∏y wr´cz rozwój „zaradnoÊci ˝yciowej” i samodzielnoÊci tych ˝aków, którzy w dzisiejszych czasach sà cz´sto bardzo uzale˝nieni od pomocy rodziców. WÊród dalszych „za” na korzyÊç mobiln

What is the role of mobility in training high quality gra duates?

To say that it is important would not be enough because it is, in fact, essential. Every young European, if wishing to achieve success in their career, must have, at a certain point, a firsthand experience in an international environment. The sooner it happens, the better. A study period abroad develops the student’s openness towards working in an international team, boosts their self-confidence so that they believe that they could do well when abroad. At the same time, the student learns to respect other cultures and customs, improves foreign language skills, and becomes a European in every sense of the word.

Besides, let’s not forget that student mobility is a chance to develop – indeed, to an enormous extent – “resourcefulness” and independence for those boys and girls at university who

How does international cooperation contribute to the quality of education in Polish universities?

International cooperation helps to improve the quality of education through the exchange of good practice and good models. However, first of all, it enables pooling resources of universities which work together in one transnational project.

In the presence of foreign students, local students are more active, put more effort into learning. In turn, Polish students returning after a study period abroad share their experiences with colleagues in the country, and are a model – in terms of higher standards in conduct and work – for others. n

Erasmus, the flagship programme of the European Union, how do you see its impact on the European citi zens (apart the students which are directly concerned)?

Erasmus has a very important impact on the European society and it reaches much more than the direct beneficiaries. We may even say that Erasmus is the best instrument the Commission has created to bring people together making diversity a real added value in their personal and collective development. Erasmus participates in the creation of a truly European citizenship. n

A few words on the importance of international mobili ty on personal and professional development (your per sonal case…) ?

I was very young when I moved from my country to integrate an international working environment. Since then I am daily confronted to the different nationalities of my colleagues.

Making all the different cultures participating actively with their peculiarities in the daily activities of an international organisation is an astonishing exercise full of dynamic and rich of complementarities. Thanks to the different environments we have experienced we always bring something to our colleagues about which is new and different. n

Wyjazd za granic´ zwiàzany z programem Erasmus to nie tylko okres studiów, ale i czas zdobywania cennych doÊwiadczeƒ. An Erasmus period abroad is a learning experience, not just a period of studies. The benefits derived from an Erasmus period go well beyond the academic aspects. The students themselves give evidence that they acquire new abilities : the sense of communication and mutual comprehension, the capacity of adaptation, the development of social relations, etc.

Wyjazdy zagraniczne studentów w ramach programu Erasmus majà równie˝ ogromny wp∏yw na wprowadzanie zmian, czego przyk∏adem jest Proces Boloƒski. Trudno jest sobie wyobraziç, ˝e bez realnego nacisku setek tysi´cy studentów uczestniczàcych w programie Erasmus ministrowie edukacji podj´liby decyzj´ o podpisaniu Deklaracji Boloƒskiej w 1999 r. Ruch wyzwala ruch – wyjazdy zagraniczne w ramach programu przyczyni∏y si´ do dynamiki zmian w szkolnictwie wy˝szym. Innymi s∏owy, najpierw idà ludzie a za nimi systemy.

Le˝y to u podstaw filozofii programu Erasmus, w którym g∏ówny nacisk k∏adzie si´ na ludzi. Mia∏ on dobry start w pierwszych latach swojego istnienia, poniewa˝ móg∏ liczyç na zaanga˝owanie wyk∏adowców oraz entuzjazm i impet studentów. Dzi´ki Erasmusowi powstaje nowe pokolenie Europejczyków. I chocia˝ liczby sà nadal wzgl´dnie niewielkie (w chwili obecnej oko∏o 155 tysi´cy studentów rocznie), sà one na tyle znaczàce, by silnie oddzia∏ywaç na integracj´ europejskà, która – moim zdaniem – stanowi g∏ówny cel programu Erasmus.

Erasmus student mobility is also a powerful leverage for change, as illustrated by the Bologna process. It is hard to imagine that, without the reality of the hundreds of thousands Erasmus students, the Ministers for education would have taken the decision to sign the Bologna Declaration in 1999. Movement generates movement: Erasmus mobility led to the dynamics of change of the higher education systems. In other words: persons go in front and systems follow.

This lies at the core of the philosophy of the Erasmus programme: put first the emphasis on persons. The Erasmus programme was able to start in strength in the first years because it could count on the commitment of the professors and the enthusiasm and impetus of the students. This reflects the philosophy of the fathers of Europe: uniting peoples, the key of Jean Monnet’s thought, is at the end of the day what Erasmus students are doing.

By means of Erasmus, a new generation of Europeans is emerging. Though numbers are still relatively modest (about 155.000 students per year at this moment) they are big enough to have a significant impact and to give a powerful boost to European integration, the ultimate aim, in my view, of the Erasmus programme.

Erasmus is the largest and most recognisable pan-European initiative in the area of higher education.

Participation in the Programme enables many young people to go abroad, develops their cultural openness towards the world, and gives them an opportunity to gain self-confidence as well as experience which is useful in professional life, in particular for those who choose to work in a company operating within an international environment.

The Programme has undoubtedly contributed towards promoting the idea of the Bologna Process and opened borders for Polish students and academic teachers. It was mainly in the interests of Erasmus students that some time ago our higher education institutions began introducing gradually the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), and that now they also increasingly often offer degree programmes in foreign languages (mainly in English). Moreover, participation in the Programme puts individual institutions under pressure to present their programmes in the form of ECTS Information Packages. These elements contribute, in turn, towards improving the quality of education in Polish higher education institutions and gradually enhance the attractiveness of studies in Poland to foreign students – and not only to those who are now taking part in the Programme.

Monika Pinkowska (Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego As a student and a member of the Erasmus Student Network organisation in Poland, I can see that the Erasmus Programme means definitely much more than only an opportunity to study abroad. This Programme creates extensive and close links among students from various European countries.

Students and academic teachers have an opportunity to learn about, and experience, the diversity of European cultures. Intercultural interactions help to enhance mutual understanding, thus building a community within the Union – a community which does not impact the citizen and their environment so directly in any other project of the European Union as it does in this one. I am also very happy that my organisation makes considerable contribution to the development of these informal international thread links. Speaking about other benefits from exchanges, one of them is certainly the upgrading of professional skills, through contact with a foreign language, work in multinational teams and the implementation of joint projects. Erasmus broadens intellectual horizons as, apart from being an academic experience, it evokes an inevitable yearning for sightseeing, fun and travel.

I was always convinced that Erasmus has a leading role in building the “European community”. 20 years of building contacts and trust via students and teachers. Nothing else could have such a positive impact on our future.

We always have to find a proper framework for giving the possibility to as much students as possible to experience something which cannot be gained otherwise.

I like the idea of Erasmus. It offers the opportunity to tenthousands of the most ambitious students in our countries to spend probably the best 4-5 months in their life abroad.

They will always remember how it was. First, they are “just motivated”, then “shocked by an other culture”, but after all they will know what an “Erasmus student” mean. And they bring their enthusiasm back to their families, and use their new knowledge for the benefit of all of us.

This is what makes my work so interesting and challenging.

Erasmus is not only my daily work as head of the Dutch National Agency: it means much more to me than work.

Erasmus for me is the future of Europe. For many students this is their first encounter with a different educational system, with living abroad, away from their parents and friends and for most of them it is also the first time they really get to know themselves. A large majority of students who have had an “Erasmus experience” feel that they have become more self-reliant, feel more self-confident and have a greater understanding of and appreciation for different people and cultures. Erasmus has broadened their horizons and made them more internationally oriented. These are all important traits that students can benefit from for the rest of their lives. In many cases they will be more inclined to go abroad again in the future for further studies, research or work. In the long run, this will have a positive effect on the creation of a single Europe.

To sum it all up: for me Erasmus makes the idea an vision of one Europe concrete and daily practice.

For today’s students, the Erasmus study and mobility experience offers the opportunity of a 21st century renaissance establishing a new European identity. It is the European programme with the largest multiplier impact on the lives of European citizens – the Erasmus students, their families, their friends and their Higher Education Institutions. It is life changing and leaves an enduring impression on all those involved. It has been a privilege to be involved and to work with such a committed team of colleagues and friends.

For me the ERASMUS programme is one of the most important success stories of the European Union. With around 1.7 million students, over 100.000 teachers and more than 2000 participating higher education institutions ERASMUS certainly is the superstar of mobility schemes in the world.

For individuals ERASMUS means learning and teaching in another European country, experience Europe by meeting fellow students and teachers from many European countries, communicating and dreaming in another language, making friends and gaining valuable competencies for the professional life.

Since 20 years ERASMUS has been changing individual biographies, institutional profiles as well as national higher education systems and mobility policies. The programme had also an important influence on the European political agenda.

With its pre-accession integration of the countries from Central and Eastern Europe in the European academic cooperation ERASMUS has anticipated the EU enlargement. Moreover, ERASMUS has prepared the ground for the Bologna Process and the creation of a European Higher Education Area.
