Memorials

IN YOUR TIME of LOSS You can depend on Young’s Memorials

Young’s Memorials has served Saskatchewan for over 100 years From its humble beginnings in 1909, Young’s Memorials has been committed to providing families with memorial stones that celebrate lives and stand the test of time. That has not changed in over 100 years, and it stands true today with owner Abraham Sun and his team.

CAST in STONE

Owner Abraham Sun is also proud to give back to the province he calls home. He has worked with the Tabernacle project at the Rosthern Bible Camp, donating $200,000 to build a life-sized version of the original Tabernacle described in the Old Testament. This project serves as a tourist destination and educational site devoted to recreating the original place of worship for the first Hebrews from where modern Christianity derives much of its history.

Young’s prides itself on providing quality memorial stones that will acknowledge those who have left us for generations to come. The company provides stone from its vast network of dedicated overseas suppliers and can offer almost any kind of granite available in the market today. They can offer any headstone you might require, including standard and special shapes and colours. Not only can they supply a beautiful array of stones in different colours and shapes, but they can also create a headstone design that is customized to the person you are memorializing. The company’s in-house designers can craft a look based on your ideas, or you can choose from a selection of beautiful, pre-made designs. Working with a designer is easy with appointments available in-person and online. The company offers an advanced engraving service that can transfer any high-quality photos or images to a black headstone, as well as the traditional engraving method of sandblasting. As well, Young’s Memorials has become known for producing quality memorial products at competitive prices. Even during and now at the end of the pandemic, they try their best to keep the previous prices even though the cost of shipping and materials has increased dramatically. Young’s Memorials remains a proud, familyowned company that is committed to upholding and enhancing the tradition of quality memorialization in all forms. “Young’s Memorials began operation in Regina in 1909,” says Abraham. “Today, just like then, we offer the best quality memorial products while still maintaining a personal and family-oriented atmosphere for all our clients.” Visit Young’s Memorials at 1010 Scarth Street in Regina, call 306.352.7372 for an appointment and learn more at youngsmemorial.ca.

Selfcare For Bliss

As summer finally arrives, we should all remember to take care of ourselves during these long, hot months. Here are some tips for some TLC that will make your summer even more relaxing. Stay hydrated. It’s easy to forget to drink water, but make the effort. Take a water bottle with you wherever you go, and keep it cool by adding ice. Baby your skin. The sun’s rays feel great but they also can burn and damage your skin. Remember to always wear sunscreen and a hat if you’re spending time outdoors. Reapply sunscreen regularly and moisturize well when you’re done in the sun. Enjoy the long days. Dark winter days drag but summer days don’t. Get up earlier to enjoy the summer even more. You’d be surprised how much you can get done (or how much relaxing you can do) when the sun rises.

SUMMER 2022

Take a dip. The dog days of summer call for a trip to the pool. Release your inner kid and splash a summer day away - and be sure to treat yourself to an ice cream cone when you’re done! Read a book. It can be hard to make time for reading when you’re busy with work, family and life. Find a comfortable spot and lose yourself in a book. Fire away. When the day is done, put your feet up by the fire with your favourite beverage and the ones you love.

Take time to sit. It can be hard to sit still when you’re trying to pack as much into summer as you can, but take care to sit down and watch the world go by. An afternoon just sitting outside is a great way to relax and release tension. Let nature dazzle you. Saskatchewan is home to amazing nature that has to be appreciated and you don’t have to go far to do it. Wander your own neighbourhood or a new one, and pay attention to the flora and fauna around you. You might be surprised at who or what you’ll see. Pamper yourself. Whether you set up a mini-spa in your own bathroom or head to the local day spa, spend some time taking care of yourself with a treat. Whether it’s a massage, facial, manicure or all of them—love the body you’re in.Eat local and in-season. Explore the local farmer’s markets and eat what we grow right here. There’s nothing like salads made from garden vegetables, fresh berries with ice cream and BBQ meat from down the road. Trust us—eating local is a great way to enjoy the summer.

FRESH ADVICE

PRO TIP When thinking about selling your home, put on your buyer’s hat, or ask a friend to do it. Walk through your property, inside and out, and make a list of the items that you notice (big or small) that make you hesitate. Take the list and decide what items may need to be completed prior to putting your home on the market. This is a great time to get advice from your agent on what needs to be done to make your house sale-ready.

THE HOME STRETCH If selling is in your future, let’s talk!

re you thinking about selling your home? If so, there are a few things to keep in mind if you are considering putting your house on the market. The biggest question is: what will a potential buyer think? Follow these steps before selling your home and it should sell faster. Declutter and Store Everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to home décor. For this reason, we recommend spending some time decluttering when selling your home, as less is always more. Removing more than you'd expect will open up the rooms and make them feel more spacious. You want buyers to envision their own possessions in the space. Start by going through each room one at a time and make three piles: 1. Keep 2. Throw Away 3. Items to Sell or Donate. Take an hour a day to get started. Half-empty your closets and organize what’s left. Buyers will snoop (and you do want them to) so be sure to keep all your closets and cupboards clean and tidy. Almost like magic, decluttering increases the size of your home in the minds of potential buyers.

Make Repairs The top tip I can give you is—that to-do list you’ve been putting off needs to get done. Focus on updates that will pay off—a fresh coat of paint on the walls; clean window coverings or buy some inexpensive new ones; replace door handles and cabinet hardware; make sure closet doors are on their tracks; fix leaky faucets and clean the grout. In some situations, you may not have the time or money to complete repairs or upgrades, so selling “as is” and pricing accordingly is also an option. Make it Shine Clean from top to bottom, making sure there is no dust or signs of pets. Get rid of anything that has gathered in hard-to-clean places such as bathroom, oven and ceiling fans. Professional cleaning companies can also make sure your home looks its best. Cleanliness is especially important in the pictures taken for your listing.

Light it Up Great lighting is one thing most buyers add to their must-have list. Remove drapes, clean windows, change lampshades, increase the wattage of your light bulbs, and replace any that are burnt out. Ensure bushes are not blocking light from windows. First Impressions Matter Your home’s exterior is the first thing buyers see when they drive up. It must look appealing and welcoming. No matter how good the interior of your home looks, buyers will judge your home before they walk through the door. Mow the lawn and pick any weeds. Inexpensive shrubs and flowers can add colour. Also, make sure your window trims and doors are touched up and tidy. I highly recommend considering the above suggestions to help you prepare your home for sale. With these steps in mind, let's work together to achieve a speedy sale at a great price!

FRESH MAGA ZINE

• FRESH LIVING

Making the most of summer involves having a place outdoors you can enjoy. It needs to be inviting, comfortable and functional. Whether you have a small apartment balcony or a massive yard, you can create a space you’ll love this summer. Functional furniture

Comfy chairs and a table are a great way to start building your outdoor zone. Consider the amount of room you have, and where you can store the pieces during the colder months. Be sure to pick furnishings that will stand up to our weather and dry out quickly. If you have the room, sofas and loungers can make a space even more relaxing.

Light it up

Your patio or balcony can also use some great lighting. LED string lights and solar garden lights can make the space inviting and cozy on those long summer nights. We also recommend citronella candles for those pesky mosquitoes.

Snug as a bug

For those aforementioned summer nights, a basket of throws and a fire pit (propane-fired or the real deal) can turn an average evening into something special. An outdoor rug also adds style and softness under bare feet.

Al Fresco Fun

Make your space a place to dine as well as hang out. Melamine dishes and glasses are easy to find this time of year and are durable enough to handle a summer outside.

Bring the green

Potted plants bring the garden to you. A few containers, baskets and pots with some simple annuals can create a fresh and friendly feeling to your space. A pretty watering can add style and function, too.

How about a hammock

If you have two trees and the room, a hammock is a fantastic way to create a place to relax. You can spend an afternoon with a good book or take a nap in the summer sun. If you have kids, you won’t believe how much time they can spend hanging out in a hammock and staying out of your hair.

Cover up

A simple sun umbrella can protect you from the hottest hours of the sun, making your patio or balcony usable for longer.

Get outside

Once your space is ready—big, small or inbetween—enjoy it. Our summers are never long enough to make sure you make the most of it.

FRESH ADVICE

CELLPHONE SECURITY Our cellphones are always close by, rarely turned off, and can hold huge amounts data. But, Did You Know: cellphones have become top targets for hackers looking to steal messages, contacts, and pictures, as well as physically tracking the owners. Hackers can even turn on a phone’s camera and microphone to see and listen to your private conversations!

How can you stop this? Well, it turns out that the oldest and simplest computer fix may help stop hackers too!

Simple Trick: Step One: Turn off Phone. Step Two: Turn it back on. That is it! Restarting phones will not stop an army of digital criminals. But it can make the hackers work harder and be more costly to them. Most hackers are looking for the easiest target...if you can make it just a little bit harder for them…then they may just move on. 28 |

If you’re like me, you never think about turning your phone off until there is a problem. Then “rebooting” your phone becomes the first step in troubleshooting the problem. However, turning your phone off and on weekly is an easy way to help thwart hackers that might try and gain access.

HOW TO

e t u C y a t S on VACATION Applying sunscreen alone isn’t enough. Now that we have your attention, let's talk about all of the skincare goodies that go into keeping your skin glowing on vacation. Saskatchewan summers are amazing! Warm air, perfect rays of sunshine, boat rides on one of our many lakes. Clients think, "Yay!" Your estheticians are thinking UV overexposure, salt water or lake water, nutrition, vacay bevies, and wind will all affect your skin, compromising the skin's natural barrier. Traveling is stressful, whether you are driving the hour or so to your happy lake life or flying off to some exotic locale. Stress associated with travel disrupts your body's rhythm, impacting your skin. Before you even leave, a million organizational thoughts are running through your head. Did you pack everything you need? Do I even need to take the kids? Is the dog going along? Hopefully, your skin isn’t the last thing on your mind, but we don’t want you to worry too much about it. Believe us when we say that your travel skin care routine can be simple and quick.

When you are in vacation mode, your sleep and wake up cycles become erratic. You might even be tempted to use your great aunt Ida’s skincare or even worse the sample sizes at the hotel. You might not have the time, energy or other conveniences to be able to follow the usual skin care routine that you do when at home. When packing your self care items, you may be tempted to leave all of your products at home. This is a hard no from us. Here is our essentials only product list to tweak your at home skincare routine for a life on the road. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Cleanser Toner Physical Sun Protection Moisturizer

This ultra simplified skincare routine will minimize your travel stress without compromising your pretty. If you can’t find travel-sized versions of your essentials, try purchasing smaller bottles and placing your product inside. These can be found inexpensively at your local Dollar Store. It’s better to keep your products consistent rather than buying new products based on size. Cleansing is so quick. We have heard countless times of people simply using their shampoo to cleanse their face. Please, don’t do this. Use your facial cleanser to remove the day's old sun protection, not to mention sweat and sand. Don’t skip this step and go to bed dirty. You risk waking up with skin that is angry, inflamed and tired looking. Just because you feel sweaty or oily doesn’t mean you don’t need moisturizer. Moisturizing is a quick way to perk up and will keep you glowing. Many quality sun protection creams for the face do double duty as a day moisturizer, making your day routine even quicker. Vacations can range from relaxing to adventuring and everything in-between. In all that you are doing, be sure to get your beauty sleep most nights. Your skin will thank you and your return to regular, non vacation life, transition will be easier. Traveling even short distances can be dehydrating. Even more so once we add sun exposure or air travel. Be sure to drink your water everyday. Dehydration is a pain that can easily be avoided. Dehydrated skin doesn’t glow. Continue your routine all summer long to keep your skin safe and glowing. For products we love or for a consultation call 306.550.2044.

Santa Lucia Pizza has it all egina’s east side is now home to a legendary name in pizza that comes from our neighbours next door. Santa Lucia Pizza started way back in 1971 when the Simeonidis’ Family opened a little take-out pizzeria in Thompson, Man. while working at the Inco Nickel mines. With their great tasting food and great value, Santa Lucia became the busiest pizzeria in Thompson. In 1974, the family moved to Winnipeg and opened another location. Many more followed and in 1990, the company went international in Fargo, North Dakota. As the years have passed, one thing has remained the same: sticking to their family’s tradition of making fresh dough, bread, sauces, salad dressings, and the traditional Greek foods, all from scratch. Five years ago, Santa Lucia made its way to Saskatoon (winning the Consumer Choice Award for best pizza five years in a row) and has now arrived in Regina—bringing their awardwinning pizza, pasta, chicken, ribs and more to the city.

Funeral and Crematorium

Crucial Conversations ave you had “the talk of a lifetime” with your loved ones? Do you know who will speak for you if you cannot speak for yourself? Does your family (trusted others) know where you would want to live if you could not live in your own home? Do they know your wishes about end-of-life care? Do they know where you keep your important papers needed by the Executor upon your death? Do they know your final wishes regarding funeral arrangements? Have you had THAT talk? If the answer is “yes,” I want to honour the courage it took for you to have that conversation. If the answer is “no,” I want to encourage you to find a way to have it. As a Funeral Celebrant, all too often I have heard a family say, “They refused to talk about their death, and now we don’t know what they would have wanted!” And I see the anguish in their eyes as they take each step hoping and praying that it is the “right” decision. As a daughter, I observed the courage of my parents as they sat my siblings and myself down and told us what they wanted, where to find everything and what was in place. 48 |

FRESH MAGA ZINE

• FRESH LIVING

They gave our family an unbelievable gift, for as each of my parents journeyed the final chapters of their lives, we could speak their truth for them when they were unable to speak it themselves, and we were able to focus on the present moment and not on any unfinished business. And when they died, they literally had everything in place except for the ceremony final details, and THOSE details were simply an honour to fulfill. Throughout life there are crucial conversations: with our little children as we teach them highly important principles and safety lessons; with our teens as they prepare to embark on their futures; with our partners as we make decisions concerning our homes and families; with our colleagues as we discern direction and so many, many more crucial conversations. Impending death seems to be one of those crucial conversations that sometimes is avoided, as if death itself could be avoided. The fact still remains, that death is and will always be a part of life, and facing it with acceptance instead of resistance or avoidance can actually enhance our living. Having the conversation can actually take the power out of the fear, for by facing it with

FRESH ADVICE

Talking about end-of-life issues is a crucial conversation that can free us so we can live in peace until the end. courage and stating your wishes, the information is now clearly out there in the open, offering a direction when it is needed. Talking about death does not make it come faster. Talking about end-of-life issues is a crucial conversation that can free us so we can live in peace until the end.

In my role as a member of our local hospice board, I recently hosted a virtual seminar on Advanced Care Planning, and in that session the point was made very clearly by a lawyer, a palliative care physician, and a family member that conversations about health care directives and advanced care planning are invaluable. HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Sask Roof Renew can save you money, and your roof egina’s Darrel Treppel was looking for a new business opportunity after concluding a successful career in IT. After much research, he purchased the Gorilla Property Services franchise for the Regina area in 2017. This company provides property maintenance services such as gutter and window cleaning and power washing to commercial, retail, multi- and single family residential customers. In Spring 2019, Darrel was approached and offered an opportunity to provide asphalt shingle rejuvenation as an ‘add on’ to his building maintenance services. After learning that the biodegradable soy-based formula developed from the technology used to treat asphalt roadways for decades could be applied to asphalt shingles to extend the life of a roof, Darrel was, “equally intrigued and skeptical.” “This was such a new approach. Maintaining your roof was just not something that I’d heard of; but of course, it makes sense,” he says. Darrel agreed to test the idea for one year. During that time, he researched the product and application process extensively, compared it with other products, and learned how the product worked by actually applying it and monitoring the results.

Before that first year was up, he knew they were on to something. “However,” as he likes to say, “the proof is in the pudding.” At the beginning of the second year, Darrel says he went back around to look at the houses he himself had sprayed, to see the results. He was amazed. Shingles so dry they were curling were now laying flat on the roofs. The oils from the rejuvenation product had penetrated the dried shingles, making them soft and flexible again. The product exceeded every one of his expectations. “There is no question this product can extend the life of an aging asphalt roof for many years,” he says. “The cost of the rejuvenation is a fraction of roof replacement.” So, in the Spring of 2020, Darrel launched Sask Roof Renew the asphalt shingle rejuvenation company powered by Greener Shingles. “I am 100 percent confident in this product. I know it works because I tested it,” Darrel says. He is quick to point out that not every roof can be rejuvenated; some roofs have just deteriorated too far. “It’s not good for my business to sell you something that isn’t going to work. But if I can save you some money, save you from prematurely replacing your roof, and keep tons of shingles out of the landfills, I’m happy with that.”

“The cost of the rejuvenation is a fraction of roof replacement.” Sask Roof Renew uses the scientifically formulated biodegradable soy bean oil based rejuvenators of Greener Shingles, which is the company who first adapted the technology used in asphalt roadways and parking lots for use on asphalt shingles. Asphalt roofs usually start showing signs of aging and deterioration after 5 to 10 years. This is normal and dependent on your location and the environmental conditions your roof has been exposed to. As the original oils dry up, asphalt shingles lose the ability to hold the protective granular top layer in place, causing them to curl and the granular to fall off into the gutters.

BEFORE

AFTER

“There are so many benefits to this product”, Darrel says. The oil penetrates deep into your shingles and begins working immediately. As it penetrates, the flexibility and waterproofing elements of your roof are restored, and the remaining granular surface is once again protected and stays on the roof where it belongs. This rejuvenation system extends the life of your roof by 5 to 15 years. “Plus, you can add this as part of your regular maintenance schedule to continue extending the life of the most exposed element of your home.” As far as pricing, the general estimate is 15-20 percent of the cost of replacement. “I like to have a look at the actual property – in person when possible, but sometimes using technology. From there, an accurate estimate will be developed and of course, I’ll go over it with you to explain everything. Give me a call and I’ll be happy to see if we can help,” Says Darrel. re you considering the energy upgrades available through the various federal and provincial programs?

Although a simple plan of putting more insulation on top of the existing may sound good, doing so can leave significant issues within the attic itself.

What is insulation, and what should you expect if you add more?

Insulation is simply a fibrous material, that works like a wool sweater, air will pass right through it however, it will only slow the movement of heat.

For example, if your home was built prior to 1980, the vapor barrier is likely very minimal and at this point, over 40 years old!

If the venting is not adequate from the soffits or roof, more insulation can cause problems, resulting in mold or rotting wood. When homes have been updated with windows, exterior, furnace etc. the home will act differently than it was originally designed.

It is the attic experts recommendation to consider a complete assessment of your specific situation. Call today to get a attic assessment completed before you proceed with your energy grant.

WATCH THE GRASS GROW BY FRESH YQR STAFF

Summer is here and so is another lawn care season. As you get out the mower and the sprinklers, these tips will help you make your lawn the envy of the neighbourhood. Let’s get started on our lessons to keep your lawn looking lush. Water, water everywhere The best time of day to water is early in the morning before the daytime temperature increases. Evaporation is low in the early part of the day. Watering early can prevent disease and insect problems. Avoid watering between 10 am and 6 pm. This is the warmest part of the day and when watering is the most inefficient. Water your lawn thoroughly every seven to 10 days unless it rains. One inch of water can help your lawn’s roots grow deeply. 60 |

Love your lawn this summer

Cut it up Cut the grass to the right length. Your lawn mower blade should be set for no lower than three inches. Make sure your blade is sharp and that no more than one third of the height of the grass is cut at one time. Let your clippings stay on the lawn—no need for bagging. Your grass will love the nitrogen that clippings provide.

Good food Feed your lawn every year with top dressing. Apply one cm of compost to your lawn once a year to help it stay lush. You can combine this with overseeding (filling in bare spots with seeds) to save time. Fertilize your lawn three times every growing season. You’ll want to apply fertilizer in May, again in July, and once more in August. Be sure to apply a fertilizer meant for the right time of year and avoid fertilizing in the fall.

Stay on it Keep an eye on your lawn’s thatch. Thatch is the layer of stems, leaves and roots that sits between your grass and the soil. It should be no more than half an inch deep. Any thicker and the thatch can prevent water and fertilizer from flowing into the roots. Dethatch your lawn with a de-thatching rake, a de-thatching blade on your mower, or hire a lawn care professional to take care of it for you. Stay on top of weeds. No one likes a weedy lawn so pull weeds as they come up. A thick, well- maintained lawn will not get many weeds because good lawn care prevents most weed issues. Take care of the bare patches. Overseed any lawn patches quickly to avoid weeds invading.

Change it up Where grass won’t grow well, do something else. Some areas of your yard may not grow grass easily. In areas with deep shade (such as under large trees), simplify your landscaping with mulch and shade tolerant plants. If you have high traffic areas, replace the lawn with a sidewalk, gravel or pavers. With a little planning and work, you can have a lawn that stands up and looks great even in the dog days of summer. Camping ideas to try this summer

Whether you’re a professional RVer or a first-time tenter, we can all learn something about how to make camping even more fun and easy. Pack it up. No matter how many times we have camped, we still struggle with the game of Tetris that is packing the cooler. The trick is layers. First, start with a layer of frozen bottles of water. These do double duty—they keep the cooler cold, and as they melt you can use them for drinking water. Next, add a layer of frozen, well-sealed meat. Then comes your chilled canned drinks, followed by a tray or rack to keep things divided. Add your lunch meats, cheese and condiments, and

62 |

FRESH MAGA ZINE

finally anything that is more delicate like eggs and vegetables. If you have two coolers, move the drinks to their own space and chill with bags of ice that can easily be drained and replaced. Camp cookery. Keep your kitchen organized in a plastic tote. At the bottom, place your frying pan and saucepan. Next, add your supplies tucked in large freezer bags. Place similar items into freezer bags, such as dish soap and sponges. Create a ‘meal’ bag for every camper

that includes a plate, bowl, cup and cutlery. Finally, add your kitchen tools, towels and items like foil, paper towels, garbage bags and matches. Plan ahead. Prepare as much as you can ahead of time. Planning meals that use many of the same ingredients can cut down on how much you need to haul. As well, cutting up fruit and vegetables, slicing cheese, and dividing up portions can save on prep work at the campsite. Keep meals easy and fun. There’s a reason Taco-in-a-Bag is a hit with campers of all ages. Plus, it’s a meal you can make ahead. Chop the lettuce,

tomatoes and onion ahead and use shredded cheese and sour cream. Cook the ground beef ahead of time and warm it up on the grill or camp stove. Single serving Dorito bags serve as your bowl. Just layer it all and dig in! Did you know a few Doritos can help start a fire? The Dorito combination of starches and oils make them easily combustible and provide a steady burn to kick start your campfire. Not only do they taste great, they can also get the bonfire going for a night of good times with friends and family.
