Are we condemning our children to a future of pain, dysfunction, and snoring/sleep apnea (a potential life threatening condition)? In the last several years, much information has come to light regarding the role of jaw orthopedics in relationship to head and neck pain, upper airway obstruction (UAO), and damage to the teeth and cervical spine. Poor orthopedic development of the jaws is something that occurs in early childhood and should be diagnosed no later than at eight years old.
Why are there so many crooked teeth? One of the most obvious and common signs of poor orthopedic jaw development is crooked or crowded teeth. Basically, the growth of the jaw has been restricted to less than the individual’s genetic potential. According to Dr. D. H. Enlow, the father of growth research, it is breathing patterns and the function of the tongue that are critical in stimulating the appropriate amount of jaw growth so that there is enough room to fit in all of the teeth. Poor breathing patterns, like mouth breathing, lead to poor tongue posture. This leads to small, underdeveloped jaws, which in turn leads to crooked teeth. Remember, the genetic code for the human being is not for us to have crooked teeth. It is the environmental influences of the industrialized world that are interfering with our breathing patterns and, thereby, our growth and development.
What are the risks of having underdeveloped jaws? Underdeveloped jaws tend to not line up well with each other or with the head and neck. This creates unbalanced function of the skeletal-muscular system. The result often presents itself as painful pathology of the joints and, more commonly, the muscles. Chronic headache and neck ache are the most common symptoms. Underdeveloped jaws can result in crooked teeth that do not function together properly. This is somewhat like gears that do not mesh well. The result is teeth that are worn and fractured over time. The most significant risk from underdeveloped jaws relates to the effect on upper airway obstruction (UAO) and snoring/sleep apnea. A lack of space between the jaws can force the tongue into the airway at the back of the mouth. In addition, an underdeveloped lower jaw tends to be locked back towards the airway, further Forward Head Posture from obstructing the flow of air. Upper Airway Obstruction
What can be done make sure my child is developing properly? The most important thing for a parent to do is observe. Have a look at your children’s teeth and jaws. Do they have crooked teeth or a bite issue such as over-bite or deep-bite? Is the posture correct or is there a forward head posture? And, most importantly, is your child a mouth-breather, tooth grinder, or gasping for air when sleeping? Do they fall asleep during a short ride in the car? These are all signs that a major health problem may be developing.

Pavlova 6 large egg whites 2 cups strawberries 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 2 cups whipping cream 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups sugar 4 tbsp icing sugar 5 kiwifruit Preheat oven to 275Âş F. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. In mixing bowl, beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt at high speed until soft peaks form. Continue beating at high speed and gradually sprinkle in sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time. Beat well after each addition until sugar completely dissolves and the whites stand in stiff, glossy peaks. Spoon meringue mixture onto the centre of the cookie sheet. Spread meringue into a nine inch circle and shape into a nest with the edges about 1 and 1/2 inches high around the outside edge. Bake 1 1/4 hours or until meringue is lightly browned and crisp. Remove from oven and let cool. When meringue is completely cool, carefully remove from parchment paper and place on a serving plate. Peel and thinly slice kiwifruit. Cut strawberries into quarters. Place on paper towel to absorb any liquid on the fruit. In mixing bowl, beat whipping cream at high speed until slightly thickened. Add vanilla extract and icing sugar. Continue beating on high speed until whipping cream forms stiff peaks. To serve: spread whipped cream onto meringue and top with kiwi slices and strawberries. Serves 12.

Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society Providing programs to benefit the community
The Surrey Fire Fighters have been serving the community since 1957, and they pride themselves in their effort to raise funds for community programs and in support of community based programs in Surrey. They fundraise through a variety of ways at annual events and on-going programs which are imperative to the success of their Charitable Society. All of the money that is donated goes directly to helping Surrey’s citizens with a special focus on children, youth, seniors, and families. The money raised goes to: Community Care Programs, Youth and School Programs, Health Care, and Mental Health and Addiction. The Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society is one hundred percent volunteer based—they have a dedicated team of fire fighters who deliver their programs.
