Are Trigger Points Responsible for Your Chronic Pain and Headaches? Has this ever happened to you? You have a headache and someone says to you: “Just massage this spot, and it will go away.” What this person has told you to do is to attempt to release a pain referral center in the muscle called a “trigger point” (TrP). Trigger points have been found to be the cause of many, often misdiagnosed, problems such as back pain, tennis elbow, knee pain, and head-and-neck pain. Trigger points are not the same as acupuncture points. Trigger points are hypersensitive, tight nodules of muscle tissue. The most common causes are acute or chronic trauma, and/or imbalance in muscle function that results in overloading.
Treatment for trigger points involves first releasing the tension from the nodules and then eliminating the causative factors. Release of trigger points is achieved most efficiently through direct stimulation or injection of the nodules. Injection of anesthetic solution can often bring immediate relief. Traumatizing factors are eliminated through things such as change of work habits. Muscle imbalance issues can be corrected by chiropractic adjustments, physiotherapy, and orthotic treatment. In the case of head and neck pain, the bite needs to be balanced in order to balance function of the neck and jaw muscles. This balance is most easily achieved with an oral orthotic that is specifically designed with proper muscle function in mind.

In patients with chronic headache, the most common trigger point referral patterns come from two muscles of the neck, the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and the Trapezius. These trigger points cause pain that can radiate across the head from the back of the neck and/or pain in the temples and behind the eyes.
