Jeremy Mason McGraw

is an international photographer known, for creating

enticing and evocative images for some of the world’s finest hotels and travel destinations. Drawing on his experience as a theatrical set and lighting designer, Jeremy's work is noted for its story-telling quality and its striking, warm and inviting light. Jeremy began his artistic career as a painter, but his passion shifted to photography in 1993 after taking a photography course. From that point on, he balanced his passion for creating images with the worlds of magic, pyrotechnics, lasers, theatrical scenery and lighting design. In 1997, Jeremy took work on a ship as a stage manager and for the next two years his passion for capturing the world through his lens grew as he sailed the South Pacific waters around Australasia. In 2004, Jeremy combined his unique photographic storytelling and passion for travel by forming Global Image Creation. Since then, his work has been featured in numerous international magazines, film and television productions such as LOST, and he has been commissioned to create videos and still photography by luxury hotels and destinations in Hawaii, Central United States and Europe.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

O

ur Summer issue is dedicated to the arts, featuring articles about Dance, Yarn, and Graffiti. We are also featuring an article on Vespa Scooters, as we celebrate when they were first placed in the streets of Rome 70 years ago. In our section of influential people in travel, we highlight four amazing ladies who are big contributors to the travel business today, and bring a creative and unique approach to the industry. In 2010, while on one of my many trips to New York City, I had the pleasure of seeing a production of Driving Miss Daisy starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Graves. Their artistry and versatility in transforming their characters throughout the play was mesmerizing. In this issue, we honor Mr. James Earl Jones as An American Legend. We are also featuring beautiful photography from our contributors, Jeremy Mason McGraw and Scotty Graham. Go and See the World!

DUBLIN’S PUBS A POPULAR ATTRACTION Photography by Scotty Graham

The Dublin’s Pubs are more than a popular attraction, they are an icon of the Irish culture. Many pubs are found in this amazing city. Some of the most popular are watering holes for locals and tourists alike. Every weekend the streets of Dublin’s bar district are filled with patrons enjoying local bands performing in the streets, tasting new beers, or simply gathering to enjoy each other’s company. A pub in the Temple Bar district of Dublin is named after the Irish poet Oliver Joseph St John Fogarty and the annual Literary Festival is held in the author's family home, now the Renvyle House Hotel in Connemara. A surgical ward in the descendant hospital of his workplace, the AMNCH, now also bears his name. The tradition of a genuinely warm welcome and first-rate friendly service is the hallmark of the friendliest watering hole in Dublin. Whether you are alone or with a group of friends, the “craic” is mighty and you will always feel at home at the Temple Bar. Overseas and out of town visitors will find the staff to be a valuable mine of information about Dublin's history and sights and they will happily recommend other places to visit to make your stay a memorable time. !9

STREET ART IN SANTIAGO

DESIGN DESTINATIONS Summer 2016

STREET ART IN SANTIAGO Graffiti is believed to have first appeared in Philadelphia in the early 1960’s and by the end of the decade, it had reached New York. But this subculture of art really took off in the 1970’s when the “artists” began to write their names or “tags” on buildings and in the subways. In the early days, graffiti was attributed to gangs, as the writings were considered to be a way of marking their territories. The term “graffiti” was first mentioned in an article in the New York Times and soon after people started looking at graffiti as an art form and art galleries began to feature works from the best known graffiti artists of the time. From its simple beginnings in the streets of Philadelphia and New York City, to today’s Miami’s hip district known as “Windwood”, and to the streets of Santiago de Chile, graffiti has spring boarded to International fame a few artist whose works have earned them worldwide recognition. Their works are on display in some of the most exclusive art galleries worldwide and often command huge sums of money.

Exploring Santiago’s neighborhoods, visitors can witness how local artists have been influenced by international graffiti, and how the country’s political history has played a major role in the development of its urban art scene. With bold colors, social innuendos and political concerns, Santiago’s street art scene is today a display of magnificent art and the world is paying attention. 22

Travel PAT WALKER PAT WALKER TRAVEL, BEVERLY HILLS Growing up with both parents in military-related careers, traveling was a necessary part of Pat’s life. Her family moved around the world, and meeting new people and experiencing new places were always exciting to her. Her desire to travel led her to a position as a flight attendant after graduating from college. She travelled the world extensively and visited many places, experiencing many cultures. She later became a songwriter, where creativity merged with her continuous desire to travel. She later founded Pat Walker Travel and both her travel experiences, knowledge of the world and the things that made any place special played a big role in the development of the company. Pat provides her clients with insight and knowledge of the places that she has visited and always strives to give them something new to experience that will make their vacation a memorable one.

KAREN SCHRAGLE WAYLAND TRAVEL, WAYLAND - MA When Karen was in high school, she flew to Paris on her 16th birthday and knew after a week in France that she would spend her life in the travel industry. Today with more than 40 years of experience and a passion for excellence, she owns Wayland Travel and Adventure Travel Desk in Wayland, Massachusetts. Wayland Travel has continued to grow and develop new services, but luxury travel remains their main focus. In addition to booking trips to exotic locations for individuals, they work with small corporations, international development organizations and educational institutions. Unlike many of today’s agencies, Wayland’s staff is a team of salaried employees, as opposed to independent contractors, which means that they all work together as a team. In addition to continuing to travel the world to stay current with locations and venues, to stay on top of the practices of the industry, Karen sits on several boards. One of Karen’s inspirations is a quote by Mark Twain that she first read as a teenager. “Travel, is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” Karen has also inspired a new generation including her six-year-old grandson, Michael, who recently told his mother, Karen’s daughter Kim,“When I get to be a man, I want to be a world traveler, like my grandmother.” She always will be glad that she boarded that plane to Paris when she was 16 years old.

YARNOGRAPY is a photography concept collection by Global Image Creation Photographer Jeremy Mason McGraw with Crochet Creations by Gina Gallina. In a world driven by increasingly complex and often unseen forces of will and technology, a new subculture has risen from the masses to reshape perception through hook and loop; weaving the yarn that binds us into a new colorful reality to inhabit. Yarnography, a world through crochet. Yarnography is a story about a group of average people driven insane by the pressures and expectations of society around them. They feel a sense that things need fixing, and at the same time, totally powerless to instigate change to make those things happen. Driven mad by their fixations, they lock themselves in their tiny apartments and crochet a fantasy world around them depicting their sense of a more ideal reality. In the end they may not be doing anything to fix the world -but they sure do make it more colorful. This yarn bombing inspired Creative Energy Project concept show opened at the Pressroom in Downtown Bentonville, Arkansas to rave reviews. Check out the video

DESIGN DESTINATIONS Summer 2016

Visiting Rome is one of the “must” trips for anyone who loves to travel and to truly immerse yourself in the “Roman” culture what better way than to ride a scooter or “Vespa” as they are called locally. Riding a Vespa through the streets of Rome is a true experience. Sharing the narrow streets with other riders gives you a sensation of freedom and excitement. This tradition goes back more than seventy years, when the first Vespa made its debut. The name Vespa means “wasp” in Italian and was first introduces by the P i a g g i o & C o . S . P. A . Company in 1946 as a way of addressing Italy’s postwar era in providing a more affordable mode of transportation. The Vespa scooter was made famous in the USA by the 1956 film Roman Holiday staring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. The Vespa scooter sales in the USA reached the 100,000 mark after the film was released. Today, the Vespas are synonymous with Italy and are now seen in many other countries around the world as not only a fashionable and alternative way to transport, but as a way of life.
