MARIONETTES

MARIONETTES

Hanging by a String

A marionette is a type of puppet that is controlled from above using wires or strings, depending on regional variations. The person who controls a marionette is called a marionettist. Marionettes are manipulated with the puppeteer either concealed from or visible to the audience, using a vertical or horizontal control bar in various forms of theaters or entertainment venues. They have also been utilized in films and television. The way the strings are attached varies according to the character or purpose of the marionette. In French, the word "marionette" means "little Mary." During the Middle Ages, string puppets were commonly used in France to depict biblical events, with the Virgin Mary being a popular character, which is how the name originated. In France, "marionette" can refer to any kind of puppet, while in other regions, it typically specifically refers only to string puppets. Puppetry is an ancient form of performance art, with some historians claiming that it predates traditional actors in theater. Evidence suggests puppetry was practiced in ancient Egypt as early as 2000 BC, where string-operated figures made of wood were manipulated to demonstrate tasks such as kneading bread. Articulated puppets made of clay and ivory that were controlled by wires have been discovered in Egyptian tombs. Marionette puppetry

was used to perform rituals and ceremonies with these string-operated figurines in ancient times and continues to be practiced today. Puppetry was also practiced in ancient Greece, and the earliest written records of puppetry can be found in the works of Herodotus and Xenophon, dating back to the 5th century BC. The Greek word translated as "puppet" is νευρόσπαστος, which literally means "drawn by strings" or "string-pulling." This term is derived from νεῦρον, meaning either "sinew, tendon, muscle, string," or "wire," and σπάω, meaning "draw" or "pull." In ancient Greece and Rome, clay and ivory dolls dated around 500 BC were found in children's tombs. These dolls featured articulated arms and legs, some equipped with an iron rod extending from the tops of their heads. This rod was used to manipulate the doll from above, similar to techniques used in Sicilian puppetry today. Some of these dolls included strings instead of rods. However, some researchers believe these ancient figures may have been mere toys rather than puppets due to their small size. In India, the term "sutradhara" comes from "sutra," referring to the show manager of theatrical performances or a puppet player. It literally translates to "string-puller" or "string-holder."
