A Case for Support

Framlingham College: A Heritage of Philanthropy
The history of Framlingham College is, in many ways, a tale of philanthropy and kindness. Its origins reflect the gratitude of Queen Victoria for her husband’s life, and its continuing existence reflect the impact of fundraising through legacies and donations over the years.
Framlingham College sits in 75 acres of land that also encompasses Framlingham Castle, all of which was generously donated by Pembroke College, Cambridge. Similarly, our Prep School, nestling in 23 acres of meadowland on the banks of the Deben, was bought by the Society of Old Framlinghamians to remember those who fell in the two World Wars.
The extraordinary diversity of Framlingham pupils is one of the College’s defining characteristics and a major influence on the educational experience. This has only been possible as Framlingham has awarded many scholarships (ability related) and bursaries (needs related) since its founding. This has allowed the College to manage the breadth and talent of the global pupil community, irrespective of geography, background or financial means.
We often receive applications from talented and ambitious children with enormous potential who would flourish at Framlingham College, but we are unable to offer them places as they require greater financial support than our finances allow; this need will inevitably grow as a direct result of the recent change of government and the implementation of VAT at 20% on the independent schools’ sector. It follows that if we cannot admit more of these outstanding young people, then Framlingham is not fulfilling its potential as a leader in education and a driving force for social mobility. Transformational bursaries provide a direct mechanism for social mobility with lifelong positive impact. The benefits of which, go far beyond the individuals, to the whole Framlingham community and wider society.
““With the UK’s current economic and political pressures building, it is critical, now more than at any time in our history, that we look to our philanthropic heritage to develop a financial model which will preserve long into the future the multi-cultural and socioeconomic diversity that has been at the heart of producing such wellrounded and outstanding Framlinghamians.”
ANDREW COOK Director of Development, Framlingham College
Our Challenge
Currently Framlingham College invests circa £2.3m per year into bursaries and scholarships, of which the Framlingham Foundation contributes less than 5% per year, leaving a net contribution of over £2m from potential fee income.
The present political and economic climate in the UK is having a game changing impact on the independent schools’ market with rising energy costs alongside schools losing their business rates relief. In addition to which, the budget has confirmed VAT will be imposed on schools at a full rate of 20% from January 2025, inevitably resulting in some schools having to close due to a lack of financial viability, with funds available for bursaries and scholarships almost certainly adversely impacted.
Although Framlingham College is in a strong financial position, these changes are likely to have a material impact on our cost base, and puts at risk the important diversity within our pupil body which is so important in developing well-rounded, respectful and balanced young minds. Framlingham College changes lives, together we can transform many more and create a sustainable future for the College, but we need your help.
Rather than operate a short-term raise and spend model of philanthropy, our aim is to build an endowment fund whereby the capital is kept in perpetuity and the investment income generated annually can support transformational bursaries each year. This will provide the long-term financial security for the College, whilst providing opportunities for every child regardless of background, geography or financial means to benefit from a Framlingham College education.

Our Solution: The Framlingham Anthology
Our mission at Framlingham is to provide an environment whereby every pupil is given the platform to create their own story by immersing themselves in limitless academic, creative, and sporting opportunities regardless of their geography, background or financial means - The Framlingham Anthology.
The purpose of the Framlingham Foundation is to create a model of fundraising which supports the long-term financial sustainability of the College. Our primary aim being to create a balance whereby the College can utilise a greater percentage of fee income to manage the financial impact of the current political and economic climate operationally, whilst increasing investment via the Foundation’s Endowment Fund into life changing transformational bursaries for pupils from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. With each transformational bursary recipient comes a unique ‘story’ of endeavour, perseverance, and achievement which we hope will be the start of a life-long commitment to the tenets of social responsibility and philanthropy. Individually each bursary recipient’s ‘story’ reflects their own journey, collectively they represent “The Framlingham Anthology” of social impact.
Contributing to this fund continues the philanthropic tenets started by Queen Victoria, Pembroke College and Sir John Edward Cornwallis Rous, Earl of Stradbroke. As Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk when Prince Albert died, he started the appeal to raise funds for Framlingham College. Our philanthropic heritage, which resulted in the College as we know it today, was continued by subsequent major benefactors such as Sir Edward Clarence Kerrison, Emile Edouard Moreau (OF, 1871-72) and Frederick William Brook, fifth Baron Rendlesham. By supporting this fund, you will not only continue, but be part of, this legacy and preserve Framlingham’s heritage, providing value that reaches far beyond the exceptional education received.

In Prissha’s own words:
Receiving the Transformational Bursary to attend Framlingham College marked a pivotal moment in my educational journey. The diverse range of A Levels and extra-curricular activities offered at the College broadened my worldview and enriched my personal growth. It was here that my passion for international relations and diplomacy was ignited - an area I now aspire to pursue as a career.

Through this opportunity, I cultivated essential leadership and communication skills, which I know will serve me throughout my life and in achieving my ambitions. I also gained a deep appreciation for understanding different cultures and perspectives, an invaluable lesson for someone aiming to address global challenges.
My aspirations for the future include working on international issues, representing my country, and fostering global collaboration. I am deeply grateful to Framlingham College and the incredible people I met during my time there for providing me with the foundation, confidence, and opportunities to pursue my dreams.

In Amy’s own words:
Prior to joining Framlingham College, I attended Ormiston Endeavour Academy. It was whilst I was studying my GCSE’s in Year 11, that we received a presentation about Framlingham’s bursary programme. I never imagined such an opportunity could be within my reach. I naturally did some further research and spoke to various people ahead of putting my application forward, and being accepted felt like a sign that someone believed in me, and while the transition wasn’t easy, I can look back on the whole experience now as a defining moment in my life and an incredible chapter in my growth.
From the moment I joined Pembroke, my journey was filled with new experiences, challenges, amazing people, and unforgettable memories. Now, as I embark on my next adventure studying psychology at university, I dream of helping others by drawing on my experiences and knowledge to make a meaningful difference, particularly in child psychology.
Framlingham College taught me that my future is mine to shape, and for that gift of belief and empowerment, I will always be profoundly grateful.

How to get involved
The College currently generates circa £15.5m in fee income of which approximately £2.3m (15%) is reinvested into bursarial Support. Within our broad spectrum of Bursary recipients, we currently provide 100% transformation bursaries to 10 young people. We could, and should, support many, many more. There are several ways to support the Foundation and play a significant role in transforming the lives of current and future generations of Framlingham College pupils.
With such a diverse pupil population and access to a broad range of facilities and expertise, there is the ability to provide support in line with your own philanthropic interests, be they within academia, the creative or performing arts or sport.
Single Donation
We recognise that those wishing to support the Foundation will have varying financial commitments both in their personal lives as well as via an existing philanthropic portfolio. With that in mind, we have created several levels at which you can support the Foundation, each of which enjoy a range of benefits over and above the social impact the College will be able to deliver (further information on philanthropic levels available at the back of this brochure).
If you can consider joining our 1864 Club, which is for donors who are able to donate £10,000 and over, please do contact our Director of Development acook@framlinghamcollege.co.uk to discuss any specific requirements you may have.
Regular Giving
Become a member of our regular giving community by committing to a regular gift of £18.64 per month, £186.40 per quarter of £1,864 per year for a predetermined period, alternative amounts are also gratefully received.
Legacies
Legacies are currently a tax efficient way of providing a donation as they are currently exempt from inheritance tax and allow donors to make a more significant contribution than might have been possible during their lifetime. Please do contact our Director of Development acook@framlinghamcollege.co.uk to discuss any specific requirements you may have or to receive our legacy brochure.

Social and Financial Returns on Investment
In addition to the Foundation receiving an additional 25p in the £1 from UK taxpayers via Gift Aid, donors are eligible for income tax relief as outlined below:

Cost of Donation (Net Value of Donation less Donor Tax Relief)
In essence, as a UK taxpayer in the 45% tax bracket, if you donate £25,000, the Framlingham Foundation will receive £31,250 and your net contribution will, after any tax-relief, be £17,187. In addition, donors are currently exempt from Capital Gains Tax on land, property and shares donated. Leaving a legacy will currently mean that your donation will either be taken off the value of your estate before inheritance tax is calculated, or reduce your inheritance tax if 10% or more is left to charity. Therefore, in addition to creating a social return through social mobility, both the Foundation and UK donors can benefit financially through the current UK charitable tax laws.
““We have done something very special for all those young people to help turn them into the outstanding individuals they are at 25, 30 and, no doubt, for life and this is what makes the whole College such a fine place.”
— ANDREW FANE OBE, FORMER CHAIR OF GOVERNORS

A message from the Director of Development
With the UK’s current political and economic pressures building, it is critical - now more than any time in our history - that we develop a financial model which will preserve our philanthropic heritage and sustain the College long into the future, whilst providing an environment for our pupils to thrive and develop the necessary qualities to become future leaders and positive influencers in society.
On behalf of the Governors, the Society of Old Framlinghamians, our Principal, staff and pupils (present and future), we remain extremely grateful for your support.
