THE FRAMLINGHAM COLLEGE LEGACY CAMPAIGN - THE ALBERT SOCIETY

What will your legacy be?

Framlingham College: A tale of generosity

The history of Framlingham College is, in many ways, a tale of philanthropy and kindness. Its origins reflect the gratitude of Queen Victoria for her husband’s life, and its continuing existence demonstrates the impact of fundraising through legacies and donations over the years.

The Senior School sits in 75 acres of land, which was generously donated by Pembroke College, Cambridge. Similarly, our Prep School, nestling in 23 acres of meadowland on the banks of the Deben, was bought by the Society of Old Framlinghamians to remember those who fell in the two World Wars.

Our benefactors continue to support the school through donations and legacies, allowing us to create life changing transformational bursary provision for children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, provide up-to-date equipment and to help finance major infrastructure projects.

Indeed, the generosity of our benefactors is a vital part of our efforts to ensure that future generations of Framlinghamians can continue to benefit from the extraordinary lifelong opportunities and education that the College provides. To ensure we can meet this aim, we are proud to launch our Legacy Campaign, and look forward to discussing further, how you can become a part of the Framlingham College legacy.

“We have done something very special for all those young people to help turn them into the outstanding individuals they are at 25, 30 and, no doubt, for life and this is what makes the whole College such a fine place.”

Our Challenge

Currently Framlingham College invests circa £2.3m per year into bursaries and scholarships, of which the Framlingham Foundation contributes less than 5% per year, leaving a net contribution of over £2m from potential fee income.

The present political and economic climate in the UK is having a game changing impact on the independent schools’ market with rising energy costs alongside schools losing their business rates relief. In addition to which, the budget has confirmed VAT will be imposed on schools at a full rate of 20% from January 2025, inevitably resulting in some schools having to close due to a lack of financial viability, with funds available for bursaries and scholarships almost certainly adversely impacted.

Although Framlingham College is in a strong financial position, these changes are likely to have a material impact on our cost base, and puts at risk the important diversity within our pupil body which is so important in developing well-rounded, respectful and balanced young minds. Framlingham College changes lives, together we can transform many more and create a sustainable future for the College, but we need your help.

Rather than operate a short-term raise and spend model of philanthropy, our aim is to build an endowment fund whereby the capital is kept in perpetuity and the investment income generated annually can support transformational bursaries each year. This will provide the long-term financial security for the College, whilst providing opportunities for every child regardless of background, geography or financial means to benefit from a Framlingham College education.

The Framlingham College Legacy Campaign

Just as a Will brings security to your family’s future, a legacy to Framlingham College will secure the future of the school, providing opportunities for life changing transformational bursaries, as well as up-to-date equipment and modern facilities, enabling pupils to benefit from a first-class education.

A bequest to Framlingham College in your Will, whether by way of legacy or a share of the residue of your estate, will help to benefit future generations of Framlinghamians and secure their place in the visionary legacy of our founders.

Past legacies have had a significant impact on the College, recent examples include the 2006 refurbishment of the Athlone Hall, creating the impressive Headmaster Porter Theatre within, and the 2017 refurbishment and extension of the old pavilion to create the outstanding Fowler Pavilion. Whilst our ambition is to continue to develop our campus and facilities at Framlingham, we must also create a sustainable endowment fund to support life changing transformational bursaries, for those who possess the necessary qualities to become future leaders and positive influencers in society, but not the financial means.

We remain extremely grateful to those who have already informed us of their intent to leave a gift in their Will to the College, and we are delighted to show our thanks by welcoming them as members of our recently created Albert Society.

“I have just retired at 75, and anything I

have achieved in life

I

owe to the start I was given at Framlingham College, and I have been happy to do what I can to repay that debt.”

The Albert Society

Framlingham College was founded in 1864 as a memorial to Prince Albert, and the aptly named Albert Society has been created to recognise and thank, during their lifetime, those who have generously bequeathed a gift to the College in their Will.

It is through such generosity that we can ensure that the College remains at the forefront of education for future generations of Framlinghamians, with every donation and every pledge, regardless of size, making an enormous difference.

Members of the Albert Society will receive regular communication so that they are updated on how the school is progressing. They will also be invited to attend selected school functions and events throughout the year. In addition, they will be invited to attend the annual Albert Society “Black Velvet” Lunch. This is held to thank legators for supporting the Foundation and enabling us to increase our bursary provision, provide more life changing opportunities to young people, and continually enhance the facilities at both the Senior School and the Prep School.

“For six years, in many respects, Framlingham was my home and the academic grounding there, the allround education and most importantly, the sport had a huge influence on the rest of my life. For this I am forever grateful.” “
— NORMAN MAYHEW, OLD FRAMLINGHAMIAN

What will your legacy be?

If you are thinking about making a legacy or have already made one and would like to know more, please feel free to contact Andrew Cook, Director of Development, on 01728 723789 or via email acook@framlinghamcollege.co.uk. A bequest to Framlingham College can be tailored to suit your own personal vision, with a variety of options available to consider, as outlined below:

Pecuniary

Residuary

Specific

A gift of a fixed sum of money set out in a Will. The value of a pecuniary gift will decrease over time, as the cost-of-living increases.

A gift of the residue (or share of the residue) of an estate. The residue being what is left after other legacies, debts, funeral expenses, certain other costs and tax, have been deducted.

A gift of a particular nature that could be used by the school or sold for proceeds. For example, a piece of jewellery, furniture, a painting, buildings, land, house contents, chattels or shares.

Contingent

Reversionary

A gift that is dependent upon the occurrence of an event which may or may not happen, such as a gift to which applies only if other beneficiaries named in a Will die before the individual dies.

Either a pecuniary, residuary or specific gift, that is left to another beneficiary in the first instance, but will revert to the school absolutely, usually after the initial beneficiary has passed away. This is a common type of gift that couples or parents often consider, where a gift is set up as a Will Trust.

The benefits of leaving a legacy

Remembering Framlingham College in your Will provides an opportunity to:

• Be a meaningful part of a child’s success who would otherwise be unable to experience a Framlingham College education.

• Achieve more benefit to others than might have been possible during your lifetime.

• Reduce inheritance tax on your estate.

• Become a member of the Albert Society, benefits include:

• An annual Albert Society “Black Velvet ” lunch;

• Your name on our Albert Society roll of honour;

• A special welcome gift;

• Free access to school concerts;

• Become part of the legacy of Framlinghan College on campus. Legators will have a plaque with their name, house and dates attending Framlingham in our Memorial Garden.

To discuss your future plans and how you can become part of the legacy at Framlingham College, please contact Director of Development, Andrew Cook via acook@framlinghamcollege.co.uk .

Tax-efficient giving

As a registered charity (Charity No.1114383) all bequests to Framlingham College are currently exempt from UK inheritance and Capital Gains Tax (CGT).

Under current law, your beneficiaries will have to pay 40% of the part of your estate that is over the threshold of £325,000 to HMRC. So, if your estate is worth £500,000, £175,000 of it is liable for inheritance tax, and your beneficiaries must pay £70,000 (40% of £175,000) to HMRC.

Charities are exempt from CGT, so where charities are beneficiaries in a Will, it may be possible to use this exemption to benefit the whole estate. Please contact your solicitor to discuss further. For example, if a UK testator has an estate of £500,000, a donation of £17,500 would only diminish the value of the remaining estate available for distribution by £4,200 (see illustration on page 13).

What if you leave a bequest to a charity?

There are two ways that leaving a bequest to Framlingham College can help reduce your inheritance tax bill. If you leave gifts to a charity in your Will, the gift value will not be counted towards inheritance tax. This could therefore reduce the amount your beneficiaries have to pay or remove your inheritance tax liability altogether. In April 2012, inheritance tax legislation changed, meaning in some situations, anyone leaving 10% or more of their taxable estate to charity may qualify for a reduced rate of inheritance tax from 40% to 36%.

The Impact of Recent Legacies

The Fowler Pavilion (2017)

Funding for the Fowler Pavilion is largely thanks to a substantial legacy bestowed to Framlingham College from the estate of Yela Fowler. Yela made the donation in loving memory of her late husband, Derek Fowler (G 193540), through the Society of Old Framlinghamians.

A multi-use function room is a key element of the new pavilion. The space offers spectators excellent views over the cricket and hockey pitches, and is ideal for presentations, lectures and other educational purposes. The pavilion contains a kitchen and serving area, allowing for the College to provide catering in support of matches, tournaments and other events.

The pavilion boasts additional changing rooms available for outdoor sports and supplements those used for indoor sports. The existing car parking arrangements, at the nearby Framlingham College Sports Centre and hockey pitch car parks, remain available to people coming to the building.

The Impact of Recent Legacies

Athlone Hall, The Headmaster Porter Theatre (2006)

Walter Stanley Porter was the Headmaster at Framlingham College from 1955 until 1971. Walter left a substantial legacy that enabled the tired Athlone Hall to be completely transformed into the impressive, modern-day Headmaster Porter Theatre in 2006.

The theatre now boasts raised and collapsible seating, a large versatile stage area, backstage storage areas, a welcoming foyer complete with a bar, and a state-of-the-art computerised sound and lighting system.

Refurbishment spilled over into the music department creating sound booths, wide corridors, a lift and welldesigned rehearsal spaces.

The Next Steps

If you are considering leaving a gift in your Will to Framlingham College, we would be delighted to arrange a confidential meeting with you to discuss your wishes in more detail.

Legacy Notification Form

If you have included Framlingham College in your Will, or intend to do so, we would be grateful if you could complete a legacy notification form. This is not legally binding, but it will help with the College’s long-term planning. Importantly, it will also enable us to thank you properly for your gift during your lifetime.

Once we have received your pledge form, we will be in touch to thank you and confirm how your legacy will be used and how we can recognise you for your generosity. There will also be an opportunity to discuss membership of the Albert Society.

Inform your solicitor

If this is your first Will, just inform your solicitor of your specific wishes. If you already have a Will, your solicitor can update it via the Codicil in this pack.

“I am very proud that our family relationship spans over 100 years of College life. I feel I was very privileged that my father chose the College for my education. I am fortunate that I am now in a position to support the College

both financially and by attending the various functions.”

““We entreat the College to continue to educate broadly, care tenderly, and send out well-rounded, good citizens into the world, and we need to support that effort whenever possible.”

CHRIS SHAW AND MIKE GARNETT, OLD FRAMLINGHAMIANS

A message from the Director of Development

With the UK’s current political and economic pressures building, it is critical, now more than at any time in our history, that we develop a financial model which will preserve our philanthropic heritage and sustain the College long into the future whilst providing an environment for our pupils to thrive and develop the necessary qualities to become future leaders and positive influencers in society.

On behalf of Governors, the Society of Old Framlinghamians, our Principal, staff and pupils (present and future) we remain extremely grateful for your support.

AT FRAMLINGHAM COLLEGE WE CELEBRATE EVERY INDIVIDUAL.

THERE IS NO TYPICAL FRAMLINGHAMIAN, NO SINGULAR PATH THAT WE TAKE.

We are academics, actors, musicians, expeditioners, sports people, innovators, scientists, ruminators, decision makers, story tellers, teammates, artists, fun lovers, nurturers and thought provokers. Often, we are many things within one.

BUT WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUAL, EACH WITH OUR OWN STORY.
