SHAPING FUTURES - CREATING CHAMPIONS BE PART OF THE FRAMLINGHAM HOCKEY LEGACY

Foreword from the Principal, Louise North

Hockey has played a significant part in a Framlingham College education for many decades. Whether playing recreationally or competing in National Tier One competitions, pupils of all abilities have been impacted in a positive way by their involvement in hockey at Framlingham College. Teamwork, communication and perseverance are just some of the skills that our pupils acquire through the sport.

This is in no small part due to the outstanding facilities and coaches that Framlingham College has had over the years. Olympian Susan Wessels spent many hours inspiring our hockey players during her time with us, Jamie Kingstone instilled high standards, grit and resilience into our players, and we are now in the Letchford era where Olympian Lisa Letchford and her outstanding team of coaches, in the form of her husband Simon, Andy Halliday and Iain Gall are bringing renewed focus on mindset, good preparation and fitness as well as embedding skills and a strong tactical understanding of the game from an early age in the Prep School all the way through to our Sixth Form.

Over the years we have seen several players go on to represent their country, and current England representation can be seen in Georgie Gardens (Moreau 2022) who plays with the full England squad, Beth Gardens playing at U21 level and Holly Hartley at U18. We nurture our players giving them the support, guidance and advice to enable them to fulfil their potential. This is always balanced with academic and other commitments so that the holistic education for which Framlingham is well known, is still possible for these elite athletes.

Head of Hockey, Lisa Letchford

Framlingham hockey has a strong heritage at the College having seen National success across both the Prep School and Senior School. The vision for hockey at the College is quite simple:

PASSION PROGRESSION PERFORMANCE PURSUE

Our coaches deliver exceptional provision regardless of ability across the entire College. This instils a passion for the game which inspires pupils to make fantastic progress. In turn, our pupils perform at a very high level often pursuing the sport outside of school and into their adult lives.

Due to the care and attention given to each individual regardless of ability, pupils and parents consider Framlingham College the school for development in hockey. National titles are a bi-product of creating a fulfilling sporting journey full of progress and developing many of the key skills required in today’s rapidly changing world: teamwork, resilience, hard work and commitment.

Whether hockey is a core priority or just a fun way to keep fit and socially active, we help every child create their own hockey story.

Hockey at Framlingham: Recent History

We are extremely proud of our hockey heritage at Framlingham College and the success we have achieved in recent years. This is in large part thanks to our motivating coaches who are unrivalled in their international and national experience. They inspire our pupils on a daily basis, developing tenacity, hard work and ambition. The facilities on offer at Framlingham are also outstanding.

In recent years Framlingham College has won several national titles including the Girls’ U18 Independent Schools Hockey Cup as well as being finalists in the Girls’ U18 Tier 1 National Championship. Meanwhile our U18 boys have regularly finished their season ranked as one of the top hockey schools in the region.

To enable our pupils to further develop, the College continues to support them in their representative ambitions. We have a number of current pupils being selected for the England Hockey talent academy pathway as well as for National League clubs.

— LISA LETCHFORD, HEAD OF HOCKEY

Maintaining our position at the forefront of UK schools’ hockey will only happen if:

1. We are able to attract world-class coaches.

2. We can recruit pupils with an ambition in the sport irrespective of financial means.

3. We maintain the exceptional facilities currently available.

Most recently, and in order not to disrupt our hockey programme at Framlingham College, we needed to move quickly over Summer 2024 to upgrade the Inskip’s surface. This endeavour required significant funding; in excess of half a million pounds. Although the College had budgeted within its annual Capex expenditure to maintain its commitment to hockey and our facility development programme, it came at a challenging time politically and economically.

Hockey must continue to be a core element of our athletic programme at Framlingham College. Our aim is to add further national titles, support elite player development and nurture those with future international ambitions, whilst not losing sight of the need to create an environment for all to enjoy the game at every level.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES

The objective of this campaign is to secure funding to ensure we can future proof hockey at Framlingham College. With your support we can invest in three key areas:

1. Infrastructure development - astro pitch resurfacing, video technology and indoor hockey facilities.

2. Bursarial support to attract young hockey players who may not have the financial means to benefit from a Framlingham College education.

3. Additional coaching resources including specialist areas such as GK coaches.

The history of Framlingham College is, in many ways, a tale of philanthropy and kindness. Framlingham College was founded in 1864 and sits in 75 acres of land, all of which was generously donated by Pembroke College, Cambridge. In 1948, the Prep School was bought by the Society of Old Framlinghamians in memory of those alumni who fell in the two World Wars. It is through such generosity that we can ensure that the College remains at the forefront of education for future generations.

Our aim is to create a platform from which to garner support from the hockey community past, present and future.

“We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL

There are several ways to support the legacy of Hockey at Framlingham College from naming rights of facilities, to providing the financial bursarial support for future hockey players to benefit from a Framlingham College education.

All those who contribute to the campaign will be publicly acknowledged via a donor recognition board displayed in the Fowler Pavilion. We would like to take this opportunity to offer a special thank you to the Society of Old Framlinghamians who have generously donated £60,000 to support the campaign, and we welcome OFs, Parents (past and present) and friends of the College to join us to create your own story of support for the future legacy of Hockey at Framlingham College.

Every donation and every pledge, no matter the amount, will make a difference.

Norman Francis Borrett (Stradbroke 1931-1936)

The following is the obituary that appeared in The Times on 30 December 2004:

Amateur sportsman who excelled nationally and internationally in hockey, squash and cricket, Norman Borrett was probably Britain’s most talented postwar all-round amateur sportsman. Uniquely, he captained his country many times at hockey and squash, while also playing first-class and minor-county cricket.

At hockey, Borrett played inside-left 30 times for England and 7 times for Great Britain, captaining the latter to the silver medal at the 1948 Olympics. His ratio of goals to games played remains the highest by an English player.
