ARTIFICIAL

INTELLIGENCE MONTH: AI IS REVOLUTIONISING DIGITAL PAYMENTS – BUT IS IT A DOUBLE-EDGE SWORD?

Aquick check of the news and it’s clear that Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming all areas of digital life – and the payments landscape is no exception. From fraud detection to personalised recommendations, AI is reshaping the way we transact and interact with financial services. However, its adoption comes with both significant benefits and challenges… Benefits of AI in Digital Payments:

• Enhanced Fraud Detection: AI algorithms can analyze vast datasets to identify patterns and anomalies indicative of fraudulent activity, protecting both consumers and businesses.

• Personalized Customer Experiences: AI-powered recommendation engines can offer tailored payment options and products, enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty.

• Streamlined Processes: AI can automate routine tasks, such as customer onboarding and payment processing, improving efficiency and reducing costs.

• Improved Risk Assessment: AI can assess customer risk more accurately, enabling businesses to make informed decisions about credit limits and payment terms.

• Enhanced Customer Service: AI-powered chatbots can provide 24/7 customer support, answering queries and resolving issues efficiently.

Challenges of AI in Digital Payments:

• Data Privacy Concerns: The use of AI in digital payments raises concerns about data

privacy and security. Businesses must ensure compliance with regulations like GDPR.

• Algorithmic Bias: AI algorithms can be biased if trained on biased data, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes.

• Technical Challenges: Implementing and maintaining AI systems can be complex and resource-intensive.

• Job Displacement: The increased automation enabled by AI could lead to job displacement in certain areas of the financial services industry.

Key Considerations for E-commerce and Banking Sectors:

• Ethical Implications: Businesses must consider the ethical implications of using AI, including transparency and accountability.

• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, such as those governing data protection and financial services.

• Continuous Learning and Adaptation: AI models need to be continuously updated and retrained to adapt to changing fraud patterns and customer preferences.

• Human Oversight: While AI can automate many tasks, human oversight is still essential to ensure accuracy and ethical decision-making.

By addressing these factors, businesses can harness the power of AI to enhance customer experiences, improve efficiency, and mitigate risks.

“Open banking: lessons, learnings and looking at the next wave of adoption”

This year marked the sixth anniversary for open banking in the UK. In that time, we’ve seen clear and consistent growth with early adopters, where businesses and customers can already see the benefits. Whilst we’re heading in the right direction, the road to mainstream adoption is a long one. GoCardless recently commissioned research to understand where the next big wave of adoption will come from and the key things the wider ecosystem needs to do to get us there.

Join Deepak Colluru, Director of Product Management at GoCardless, to discover the key findings from the research and lessons from six years of working closely with customers to develop open banking capabilities.

Deepak Colluru is the Director of Product Management at GoCardless, leading the charge on GoCardless’ embedded finance proposition. Deepak joined GoCardless in 2017 but has over 20 years of experience in engineering and product management. He previously co-founded an edtech company for which he had a successful exit. Prior to his entrepreneurial journey, he also held positions at Deloitte and Symantec. He has a Bachelors degree in Computer Science and an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship from London Business School and still regularly supports LBS initiatives.

“New Money - New Payments”

This presentation will uncover some of the current and future challenges to a broader Open Banking adoption in the UK. We will also take a look at Europe and the US to compare and contrast.

• From Bitcoins to CBDCs

• CBDC: what is it? Why do we need it?

• Key design and purpose questions to ask

• CBDC projects: stocktake

• Global CBDC landscape

• EU and UK CBDC timeline
