NEWH UK – celebrating UK’s top Interior Designers

The NEWH UK Top ID awards campaign, which shines a spotlight and honours the creative talents of chapter members who are aligned with their mission of supporting scholarship and education, climaxed with an event that welcomed the UK design and hospitality community together…

NEWH UK Chapter celebrated the winners of its much-coveted TopID awards inside VitrA London showroom. During the evening, this year’s winners – Design Command, DV8 Designs and THDP – were celebrated for their projects, completed in the past 12 months, with a short presentation from each studio followed by the presentation of their TopID award.

“We are delighted to be hosting the TopID awards ceremony in collaboration with NEWH at the VitrA London showroom,” said Nicola Friel, VitrA London Showroom Manager, ahead of the awards. “Supporting this important event that celebrates outstanding design in the hospitality sector is a privilege, and as members of NEWH, we’re proud to contribute to its mission of advancing scholarship and education within the industry.”

Kevin Swart, President of NEWH UK, said: “NEWH UK is a family of passionate designers, hospitality professionals and industry leaders. Connecting the community and recognising excellence is at the heart of what we do. The TopID awards hold a special place in our hearts because they are about celebrating

the hard work, creativity and dedication of our chapter members. More importantly, they help pave the way for the next generation of designers through invaluable scholarship funds. We’re beyond thrilled that VitrA joined us as Headline Sponsor to host this special event – the venue, on the doorstep of many leading design studios, is perfect.”

Design Command, established in 2013 by Clare McDonald, is a multi-award-winning interior architecture studio based in London and Hertfordshire. Specialising in hospitality design, the studio has contributed to more than 50 restaurants and numerous hotels for both independent and global brands.

McDonald said: “We are thrilled to receive this accolade from NEWH and TopID awards 2025 for the second time! This recognition is a testament to 12 years of Design Command’s dedication and commitment to delivering exceptional design. It is an honour, and we are so grateful to be awarded by such an inspiring organisation – thank you for this incredible acknowledgement.”

DV8 Designs, founded in 2006, is an award-winning architectural and interior design practice based in the North West UK. The studio specialises in the commercial and hospitality sectors, focusing on creating unique spaces that ‘deviate away from the ordinary’.

Lee Birchall, Managing Director at DV8 Designs, said: “We are

absolutely thrilled to have DV8 Designs recognised as a 2025 Top ID firm by NEWH. This honour highlights the passion, creativity and dedication our team pours into every project, and it’s deeply rewarding to see our efforts celebrated by such a respected organisation. Being part of a community that defines and energises the interior design industry is both an honour and a privilege. We look forward to continuing to push boundaries and deliver inspiring spaces in the years to come.”

THDP is a forward-looking, luxury interior design studio, based in both London and Milan. Founded in 2005 by architect Manuela Mannino and interior designer Nicholas J. Hickson, THDP works internationally, delivering inspiring properties using their wealth of knowledge and impeccable sense of style. The creative team is experienced in hospitality design, overseeing pioneering projects throughout Europe.

Both Hickson and Mannino, said: “To be named TopID 2025 by NEWH is both an honour and a responsibility. It acknowledges the work we’ve done and challenges us to keep striving for excellence in our craft. We are deeply grateful to NEWH for this recognition and for celebrating the power of design.”

MONDAY 23RD JUNE

“Accessible Luxury: making sense of inclusive design”

Be part of the conversation on accessibility in the hospitality space and find out from our expert panellists how their lived and professional experience can help you to create luxury interiors for every capability.

During this session, we will explore opportunities for hotels to cater to a wide range of physical and neurological needs through design without compromising on aesthetic or adding extra zeros to the design budget.

With nearly a decade of experience, Rebecca Storey has designed accessible environments for commercial and residential clients and consulted on inclusivity for renowned designers and architectural practices.

In 2022, she founded Storey Interiors with a clear vision: to design life-enriching interiors that are inclusive for all. She works closely with clients to understand their lived experiences, ensuring each space is not only functional but also personal and beautifully designed.

In addition to Storey Interiors’ design services, Becky provides inclusive design consultancy, supporting architects and designers in creating truly accessible spaces.

A Falmouth University alumna, Becky shares her expertise through guest lectures and contributions to industry publications on inclusive design.

Christopher Samuel is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in identity and disability politics. Often echoing the many facets of his own lived experience as a Black disabled man, his work tells stories, highlighting the often unseen experiences of his day to day life and those of others in similar circumstances. His practice includes small detailed ink drawings, film, print, audio, research, and large installations. Samuel works alongside galleries, museums, archives and other institutions to address missing representation in our cultural spaces.

Shelley Cowan is a passionate advocate for accessibility and inclusion, dedicated to transforming the hospitality and tourism industry to better serve people with disabilities. As the founder of Access Avenue and the Accommodation for All campaign, she works to address the gaps in accessible accommodations and improve travel experiences for disabled travelers. With nearly 30 years of lived experience as a disabled person and extensive research into accessibility barriers, Shelley has developed a deep understanding of the challenges disabled travellers face.

Shelley is also the founder of JustUs, a not-for-profit organisation that creates inclusive social experiences for adults with disabilities. She serves as an ambassador for Purple Tuesday and is an advisor and ambassador for the Accessible Hospitality Alliance, helping businesses enhance their accessibility standards. As an international masters student in International Business Shelley combines her academic expertise with real-world experience to drive meaningful change.

Charles & Joanna van Berckel embarked on their journey with AbleStay in 2020. After a request on social media for information on any fully accessible holiday accommodation in London for those with more complex physical disabilities, and finding none out of the 146,000 hotel rooms and over 70,000 self catering holiday accommodation residences, the couple decided to do something about it.

With their lived experience of life with their son Kit (quad CP & full time WC user) they set up the charity AbleStay and started the process to deliver a holiday home with the highest level of Mobility Support to enable those wishing to visit the London the opportunity to stay overnight. The house finally opened in September 2022 and has been fully booked since the first guests walked through the door.
