Sensory gardens are a blooming trend in care homes, offering a haven of stimulation and relaxation for residents. But when it comes to sourcing the best provider for your specific needs, navigating the options can feel overwhelming. Fear not! Here are some top tips to help you choose the ideal sensory garden solution provider for your care home…
Understanding Your Residents’ Needs:
• Resident Assessment: Firstly, conduct a thorough assessment of your residents’ needs and preferences. Consider their physical limitations, cognitive abilities, and sensory sensitivities. This will guide your choice of features and materials.
• Thematic Considerations: Will the garden cater to residents with dementia, physical limitations, or a mix of needs? Thematic elements like memory gardens or nature trails can be incorporated based on resident preferences.
Matching Provider Expertise:
• Experience in Care Homes: Seek providers with proven experience in designing and installing sensory gardens specifically for care homes. They’ll understand the unique needs of elderly residents and adhere to safety regulations.
• Portfolio Review: Ask for a portfolio showcasing their previous work in care homes. Look for gardens that incorporate diverse features, textures, and plant varieties to stimulate all senses.
Functionality and Sustainability:
• Accessibility and Maintenance: Ensure the
“ A well-designed sensory garden can offer a multitude of benefits for your residents, enhancing their well-being, promoting social interaction, and fostering a sense of peace and connection with nature.
design prioritizes accessibility for residents with mobility limitations.Raised beds, wide pathways, and easy-to-maintain planting schemes are crucial.
• Safety and Durability: Materials used should be safe, non-toxic, and weatherresistant. Opt for rounded edges and surfaces to minimize fall risks.
Communication and Collaboration:
• Clear Communication: Choose a provider who listens attentively to your vision and works collaboratively throughout the design and installation process.
• Staff Training: Enquire about staff training on sensory garden usage and resident engagement within the garden environment.
Additional Pointers:
• Seek Recommendations: Talk to fellow care home providers to gather insights and recommendations on reputable sensory garden designers.
• Budget Considerations: Obtain quotes and compare
pricing structures from different providers. Remember, the cheapest option may not always be the best in the long run.
• Long-Term Vision: Consider the future when choosing materials and plants. Opt for solutions that are easily adaptable and expandable as resident needs evolve.
Creating a Sensory Sanctuary
By following these tips and involving residents in the planning process, you can ensure your sensory garden becomes a cherished space for relaxation, reminiscing, and sensory stimulation. Remember, a well-designed sensory garden can offer a multitude of benefits for your residents, enhancing their well-being, promoting social interaction, and fostering a sense of peace and connection with nature.

Anthony Bennett Motivational & Inspirational Speaker
Anthony is an inspirational ex-patient of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and is going to share his story of resilience and the power of teamwork and how a positive mindset helped him on his road to recovery following a near death experience.
The impact of self-challenge – saying yes to opportunities and being the best you can be.
• It takes a team - why success is nearly always down to your team.
• Resilience and the power of a positive mental attitude.
• Learning from setbacks and keep a positive mindset and maintaining motivation.
• Yin and Yang - How negative times can result in positive outcomes that help us persevere.
Anthony Bennett is an inspirational speaker and motivational speaker & fundraiser who learned how to walk, talk and speak again after contracting three virus infections at the same time.
In 2006, after returning from a trip to Disneyland Paris Anthony fell extremely ill and was left fighting for his life.
The cause was narrowed down to the air conditioning within the coach and affected 80% of students on the trip but left Anthony with 10% chance of survival after contracting 3 viral infections - Streph-Pneumonia, Influenza, and Staphylococcus.
After making a full recovery, Anthony played a major role in winning a £7.5m Charity Partnership between Whitbread PLC and Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, where he spent 4 years traveling the UK and Inspiring teams to get involved in raising the much-needed funds for the children’s charity. The money raised went towards the construction of a brand new cardiac hospital wing, helping at the children’s hospital to treat up to 20% more children.

Sensory gardens are calming spaces stimulate the senses, evoke memories, and promote relaxation. But with so many plants to choose from, how do you create a sensory haven that truly engages all five senses? Here’s a guide to selecting the best plants for your residential care home’s sensory garden…
Sight:
• Colourful Blooms: Opt for vibrant flowers in contrasting colours like red, yellow, blue, and purple. These will provide visual interest and stimulate the mind. Examples include pansies, violas, sunflowers, and cosmos.
• Evergreen Foliage: Evergreen plants add year-round visual appeal and provide a sense of structure. Consider using holly bushes, dwarf conifers, or variegated hostas.
• Seasonal Variation: Plant a variety of flowers that bloom throughout the year, ensuring there’s always something colourful to enjoy. Spring bulbs like daffodils and tulips can be followed by summer blooms like roses and lavender, and finished with autumn colour from chrysanthemums and ornamental grasses.
Smell:
• Fragrant Flowers and Herbs: Fill the air with delightful scents using fragrant flowers like roses, honeysuckle, and hyacinths. For a touch of practicality, incorporate aromatic herbs like rosemary, lavender, mint, and thyme. Residents can enjoy the scents and even participate in light gardening activities.
Touch:
• Textural Delights: Provide a variety of textures to engage the sense of touch. Include plants with soft leaves like lamb’s ear, feathery fronds of ferns, or the
smooth bark of a dwarf apple tree. Raised planters allow residents to safely explore these textures.
• Sensory Paths: Create a path with contrasting textures, such as smooth pebbles, soft bark chippings, and areas of grass. This can be a stimulating and enjoyable experience for residents using wheelchairs or walkers.
Sound:
• Rustling Leaves: Plants with rustling leaves, like bamboo or ornamental grasses, can create a calming and therapeutic sound when swayed by the breeze.
• Water Features: The gentle sound of trickling water from a fountain or birdbath can be incredibly relaxing. Consider incorporating a small water feature, ensuring it’s safe and accessible for residents.
Taste:
• Herb Gardens: Raised herb gardens allow residents to participate in growing their own food. This can be a source of pride and enjoyment, and the fresh herbs can be used to enhance meals. Opt for easy-tocare-for herbs like chives, mint, basil, and parsley.
• Edible Fruits (with Supervision): For a touch of sweetness, consider planting soft fruits like strawberries or blueberries. However, ensure these are
planted in designated areas and supervised when residents are present to avoid any accidental ingestion of unwashed fruit.
Remember:
• Safety First: Choose plants that are non-toxic and safe to touch. Avoid plants with thorns or sharp leaves.
• Accessibility: Ensure raised planters are at an appropriate height for residents to easily enjoy the plants. Wide pathways allow for easy navigation with wheelchairs or walkers.
• Resident Preferences: Consider the backgrounds and preferences of your residents when choosing plants. Familiar scents and textures can be particularly evocative for those living with dementia.
A Sensory Symphony:
By incorporating a variety of plants that appeal to all five senses, you can create a sensory garden that provides a truly enriching and stimulating experience for residents in your care home. This haven of colour, fragrance, texture, sound, and taste will promote relaxation, evoke memories, and enhance the overall well-being of your residents.

We offer specialised NMC OSCE training for Adult Registered Nurses, Midwives, and Mental Health Nurses. Our training locations include London, Manchester, and Glasgow, with Glasgow opening on 1 August 2024. We support UK-based carers looking to upgrade to nursing roles, nurses currently employed in other settings seeking new opportunities, and international self-sponsored nurses seeking employment in the UK care sector. Our pass rates are 40% on the first attempt, 82% on the second attempt, and 100% on the third attempt.
