Fort Davis update.

A look at what's been going on in the coolest place in Texas

There's always something happening at Davis Mountains State Park. From history to hiking, educational fun is ever present. Here's a look at a snippet of activities that take place out at our beloved State Park. Stay up to date with their weekly activities by following the D.M.S.P. Facebook page.

Good to see ya!

Fort Davis National Historic Site resumed general operations on January 26th, with all buildings and trails being reopened. The N.H.S. would like to thank all of y'all for your patience. Fort Davis N.H.S. is open Monday - Friday, from 8a to 5p.

Yes, that's really what it's called.

Heavenly gazers, photographers, and astronomers were delighted at this semi-rare celestial treat. In late January, earthlings were able to view the "Super-Blood-Wolf-Moon" (an event where the moon passes through the Earth's shadow, and is also closer to the Earth than normal) with ease. Here's an amazing photo of the event shot by Nathan Hall. If you missed out on this one, the next predicted Super-Blood-Wolf-Moon visible in North America will happen in 2022.

Fort Davis gives back.

On February 7th, the periodical blood drive returned to the First Baptist Church of Fort Davis. The blood drive's goal of 29 units was surpassed, with 31 units being collected. Thanks to everyone for donating, and thanks to those who organized and worked this great event!

New events at the Jeff Davis County Library Our friends at the Library have started up a bunch of new activities. To check out what's on the docket, visit their website, give them a ring, or plan a visit.

Geodetic network comes to far west Texas In early February, a new scientific facility backed by U.T. Austin and NASA got it's dish. The near 40 foot dish (pictured) was hoisted atop a radio telescope that is part of the new McDonald Geodetic Observatory, which is one of thirty in a global network. The Geodetic Observatory's purpose is to help scientists keep track of what's happening on Earth - from sea level changes to volcanic eruptions, and landslides to earthquakes. The Davis Mountains make an ideal location for the new science instrumentation, being situated in an area with little tectonic activity and predictable rainfall. The latest edition is set to be fully functioning in 2022. Photo via McDonald Observatory.

The show must go on As you've probably heard, times have been tough over at Big Bend Brewing Company. Though they have suspended operations, their annual shindig in Valentine, Texas is ON. The 7th Annual Valentine's in Valentine is set for February 14th at 4pm in the Old Mercantile Building - and don't forget your dancing shoes, as Doug Moreland and friends are set to play. No tickets, merch, or beer will be sold to this stripped down, informal event. Interested volunteers should email valentine@bigbendbrewing.com

Get your motors running. Gas up, grab your cameras, and hit the road. The 75 mile Davis Mountains Scenic Loop is waiting to be driven. See the picturesque landscape of far west Texas in the driver's seat, as iconic peaks like Sawtooth and Livermore stand at attention. It's recommended to allot two hours for this trip. For more information of the Scenic Loop, give us a call at the Chamber office.
