Speaking of stands… we just got a shipment of outdoor racks, and while we have several promised out, we have more… If you know of a perfect spot for one of these, please email, text or call me and we’ll make it happen. keela@lkn-magazine.com, 336.749.1947.

OK, Lake Norman, let’s step up and show some love to some very special kids in our community. ‘Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate!’ This quote couldn’t be more spot on. One of their biggest fundraisers for CATAWBA VALLEY GUARDIAN AD LITEM ASSOCIATION is coming up on September 20th at Novel Taproom in Newton, who doesn’t LOVE Casino Night? This popular event always sells out quickly, so grab your tickets now. If you aren’t available that night, please consider a donation or even sponsor a table! You’ll find many other opportunities and more about what they do on page 66.

Stop by this month to congratulate Scott Gilleland, Hope and THE UNTOUCHABLES team on their 40th Anniversary! This is a restaurant our family frequented when our kids were growing up , when we would visit friends at the lake before we retired here, they LOVED it then and LOVE it now! If you haven’t visited lately, stop by, or drive through and congratulate them on this incredible milestone! See their story on page 60.

I’m betting many of you have heard of PATTY KORN , from Denver, NC. If not, she is a jewel and ONE-OF-A-KIND volunteer. What a treasure she and many other volunteers are to this community. Check out

her story “Keep Lincoln County Beautiful.” Meet the special lady who launched this journey, on page 36.

Congratulations to SHERRIE ANDERSON, MRS. LAKE NORMAN , she is an amazing woman and mother of nine (yes, nine) children. You’ll love reading her story on page 52.

Finally, a BIG shout out to ANDREWS MOWING AND LANDSCAPING , who happens to be on our cover this month! They are currently in the middle of building our dream patio/fire pit, and we couldn’t be happier! Check out their story starting on page 28.

This is all just a drop in the bucket! We have so much going on in this issue and couldn’t be more excited about the months ahead!

INSPIRED DINING & Unforgettable Events!

Delighting Lake Norman residents since 2017, The Foundry is the featured restaurant at the Twin Mills Club in Denver, NC—the private Member Club which acts as the centerpiece to the Trilogy® Lake Norman residential community. Known for healthy, flavorful fare—always with a southern twist!—The Foundry is a favorite choice of locals for dinner any night, and both The Foundry and the Twin Mills Events Center are open to the public for dining and for private event bookings.

“The restaurant supports local farmers and artisans by using recently harvested food, and highlighting the unique character of each ingredient,” explains Dan. “The menu includes popular and culturally inspired foods, all tinged with a hint of the South, including house-made pizzas, pastas, burgers, and salads. Guests can also enjoy excellent boutique wines, beers, and traditional cocktails at both The Foundry and Outfitter Café.

“Our dining experience is centered on three, tried-and-true food and beverage tenets: We are socially driven, locally inspired, and stylishly crafted,” says Dan Guinle, the club’s General Manager.

The Foundry’s culinary team is known for curating the freshest raw ingredients and crafting beautifully finished, bespoke plates—all perfect for a casual lunch or a celebratory birthday or anniversary dinner. And, local and regional house-crafted features all pair deliciously well with the club’s signature Craft cocktails and barkeeper specials.

The extraordinary setting couldn’t be more welcoming, boasting a community long table, indoor and outdoor bar, a daily social hour for gathering with friends, and a display kitchen with a wood-fired grill—where the culinary magic happens.

As for the very diverse menu, if you’re into sharing a dish, start with Firecracker Salmon Poke Tacos or vegetarian Squash Carpaccio. From a tempting selection of handhelds and pizzas (that can be made gluten-free upon request) to Chef Brett Faldstein’s specialties that include Short Rib Pot Roast, hand-cut Wood-Fired Steaks, and beer-battered Fish & Chips, there’s a taste for every mood! Born and raised in

LOCALLY
THE FOUNDRY AT TWIN MILLS CLUB

the Chicago suburbs, Chef Brett embraced his love of good food at an early age—thanks to his parents and grandmothers who took their preparation of excellent food very seriously! He spent time at Bull & Bear and Howells & Hood in Chicago before relocating to Charlotte, NC, and soon finding his culinary home here at The Foundry.

If you’re planning a significant event—wedding, rehearsal dinner, anniversary, or milestone birthday—you’ve also found the perfect spot.

“For the most unforgettable special events, we also offer several different outdoor locations, from the amphitheater with seating for over 1,000 guests, to rustically elegant meadow views for 200, or an intimate fire and waterfall site for 75 guests,” says Senthil Elangovan, F&B Director.

Latrobe’s Atelier, the venue’s own artist studio, can also serve as the bridal suite for an outdoor wedding, or stand on its own for an elegant cocktail party. The possibilities really are endless, with a collection of patios available for an al fresco cocktail hour under romantic bistro lights, and the option to “dress up” any of the spaces—or keep things simple and chic.

The indoor Event Center offers seating for 150 guests, complete with state-of-the-art audio visual systems, distant forest views, and a clean palette decor that can easily transform to fit your story. Add incredible fare from The Foundry, and what more could you ask for?

“All of our spaces embrace the outdoors as part of the experience, while offering all the comforts of a resort,” says Senthil. “The magic to our venue is the flexibility that our intentional design offers. It’s intriguing, but adaptable, distinctive on its own, yet customizable to fit any individual taste.”

Fine casual dining with an attentive staff and all the flavor you could hope for, visit The Foundry at Twin Mills Club at 310 Exploration Blvd. in Denver, NC. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and offers Sunday brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by dinner from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Call the Foundry team at 704-5858786 for reservations, or scan the QR code below to reserve your table through OpenTable. You can also find their menu at lakenorman.bluestarmenus.com/ the-foundry. The Foundry and the Twin Mills Events Center are open to the public for dining and for private event bookings.

EASY (AND SIMPLE) DOES IT!

Picture this: you are in the aisle of a craft store and before you is an array of colored pens, pencils and markers, all begging you to take them home to be used with the new academic planner you just purchased. Do you want to use a pencil so that you can easily erase? Or will it be a marker so that the color is bold on the page? Should there be a bit of sparkle in the ink? What about some fun stickers to accent things?

While it’s wonderful to have so many choices, things can seem to get complicated pretty quickly. This happens at many twists and turns in our lives. Schooling at home is no different. If you’ve checked out some of the resources mentioned in previous articles, chances are that you might have caught on that there are so many choices when it comes to curriculum, field trips, activities, co-ops, planners, blogs, and yes, the slurry of different colored pens to use in your planner.

Of course, it’s ok when you are getting started to want to experiment a little and try out some different ways of doing things. Over the past few years, I’ve learned a few lessons on what to do and what to maybe, well skip.

1. Keep HEALTHY SNACKS handy. The temptation to give in to unhealthy snacks is real, especially on days when things don’t go as planned. Many busy parents meal plan and prep at the beginning of the week which can be a huge help in this category! For those of us that might not always have the time to prep, fruit is a great handheld snack that has minimal, if any prep work involved.

2. Your child will produce many wonderful DRAWINGS , paintings and other crafty projects. Yes, you should absolutely save those that have key meaning. But, you can’t save everything. (Ok, you COULD, but you need to have some serious storage space available!) Create a designated album on your phone or other device to showcase these masterpieces wherever you store your pictures. While we’re at it, take photos of all the different activities of your schooling journey and save those there, too.

3. In a previous article, I suggested including EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE HOME . However, try not to schedule too many of these on your calendar. Choose things that will bring the most value and joy to your child. Maybe plan something physical once a week (Phys ed) and then something else you aren’t able to teach at home (a musical instrument, a STEM activity, etc.) Other seasonal field trips and activities will pop up that you will want to participate in and when you try to squeeze them into an already full week, you can sometimes find yourself scrambling to find time for the ‘basics.’ This will undoubtedly induce a little stress. This was one of the very first things others told me when I first started our journey. I THOUGHT I had it covered, but fell in the trap anyway.

4. Consider schooling beyond the ‘traditional’ SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR You don’t need to be aligned to your city or town’s public school schedule. Many families ‘do school’ year round so that they can pace themselves and take breaks on

a more regular basis as needed during the year. This also gives your family a chance to enjoy the weather in the fall, winter and spring and take trips when most families are in school. Have your schedule be built around the life your family lives.

5. Have KEY DOCUMENTS handy. Keep a binder with:

• A calendar to jot down what you’ve accomplished each day. I find that doing this gives us a great review at the end of the year of what we’ve covered and all the fun activities we did.

• A copy of the NC Attendance Record. You don’t have to use this form, but it is available as a free download on the ncadmin.nc.gov site. I found it easy to use and no reason to over complicate things by looking for other resources.

• A recent copy of your immunization records.

• A printout of your homeschool registration card

Embracing simplicity can bring numerous benefits to both kids and parents. Minimizing distractions, keeping focus on core essentials and fostering a nurturing environment will help your children (and you!) thrive, learn and grow! Visit our exclusive Facebook group and create a post sharing your experiences! Scan the QR code here, or search for ‘LKN Magazine Readers’ on Facebook to join today!.

*Note: ALWAYS refer to the NC laws and guidelines as shared and updated at ncadmin.nc.gov/public/home-school-information.

HAVE YOU REVIEWED YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES LATELY?

When it comes to financial planning, common topics are stocks, bonds, savings rates, growth rates, social security, pensions, etc. We also believe that insurance should be a part of the overall financial discussion. This is because certain types of insurance are directly related to the preservation of assets and the protection of your financial plan, ultimately serving as a safety net.

The three types of insurance that can protect you and your family’s financial security are: life insurance, disability income insurance, and long-term care insurance.

• LIFE INSURANCE is designed to provide a tax-free death benefit to your family. The purpose is to cover the loss of income, pay off debts, and help with future expenses (perhaps education for your children).

• DISABILITY INCOME INSURANCE helps to replace a portion of your lost income in the event that you become disabled and are unable to continue working. In your working years, your income is your most valuable asset.

• LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE helps to cover the cost of care should you require a nursing home, assisted living, skilled nursing, etc. The national average for nursing home costs is around $8,500 per month if paying out of pocket. At that rate, a financial plan could be derailed if care is needed for multiple years.

If it has been a while since you have reviewed your insurance policies or if you are interested in exploring options, we would love to help you with that. As your financial situation changes, so should your insurance plan. There are some nuances to the different options available, and understanding what you have and how it works is an important part of your overall financial plan. Additionally, your age and health play a significant role in your ability to obtain these types of insurances. A piece of advice would be: purchase insurance when you don’t need it so you have it when you do need it.

All investing involves risk including loss of principal. No strategy assures success or protects against loss.

A NEW ADVENTURE AWAITS!

Katrina and Stan Teague have truly loved growing what they call their “passion project” —introducing new customers to Mid-Century Modern (MCM) décor at their Huntersville store, Charlotte Vintage Furniture.

Previously selling wonderful MCM finds from a warehouse location, and via online sales before that, Katrina and Stan opened their delightful showroom in an historic schoolhouse building in March of 2022. Discerning in the items they offer throughout their store, the two schedule weeklong buying trips at least once every quarter, along with visits to auctions and estate sales just brimming with treasures. Their inventory changes weekly, and a visit to Charlotte Vintage Furniture is always a happy adventure!

The thrill of visiting their amazing collection will be taking on a new look —and a new home — with a soft opening at their new location planned for late August. You’ll soon find Charlotte Vintage Furniture at 2315 N. Davidson, Suite 100, in Charlotte, NC —as part of the Urban District Market (UDM) project at Lintmen’s, a 20,000-square-feet former textile mill.

“Huntersville has been wonderful to us and our growing business,” says Katrina. “We’ve made lasting friendships, and built a growing clientele and following. We look forward to continuing to serve our clients in the new location —and with the UDM food hall and fun options to dine inside, on the patio, or to-go, it’s a great destination for date night, or a family outing.”

As the largest showroom of Mid-Century Modern home furnishings in the area, the arrival of Charlotte Vintage Furniture will further enhance the Mill District area as a Charlotte “hot spot!”

The new location is an 11-minute walk to the 25th Street station LYNX Blue Line, which takes visitors straight into NoDa, and the Cross Charlotte Trail (the XCLT), which stretches from the southern tip of Mecklenburg County to near the Cabarrus County line, will run right through Lintmen’s.

The Teagues have actually lived within a mile of their new location for 12 years, and have

witnessed the tremendous growth in NoDa and Villa Heights.

“We’ve been watching the neighborhood landscape change every single day, with new homes, restaurants, and growing foot traffic,” explains Katrina. “Our regular commute always took us by the Lintmen’s building, and we often remarked how perfect the former Mill would be as a storefront for our vintage furniture business.”

Their fabulous inventory of Mid-Century Modern furniture and décor should have a strong appeal to the same demographic now moving into the area, and the Teagues are excited to make new friends and continue sharing their love and knowledge of Mid-Century Modern style. And, as always, they look forward to guiding customers to finding that one finishing touch for a special spot in their home!

But the Teagues are definitely not saying goodbye to their many clients and friends around the Huntersville area. As Katrina shared, “Stan and I look forward to welcoming our Lake Norman clients in our new and expanded Charlotte location. It’s just 20-30 minutes away, and we hope you’ll visit often!”

Make note now of their new location —2315 N. Davidson, Suite 100, Charlotte, NC, 28205 —and expanded hours Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. For updates on their move visit charlottevintage.com, follow them on Instagram @charlottevintagefurniture, or call 704-727-0362.

A BOW OF Gallantry

Hampton’s has made its way to downtown Mooresville, and we’re loving our new home in the historic district of Main Street! We have great new neighbors, a beautiful new store, and a lively environment in which to enjoy both. After spending the last six years in lackluster Langtree, this breath of fresh air is certainly welcome.

Speaking of fresh air, the state of fashion over the past few years has been much of the same each season: hoodies, sneakers, and athleisure ruling the world. The times, they are a-changin’! I believe we’re all finally exhausted of seeing pajamas in public… as Rhett Butler said to Scarlett O’Hara, “thank Heavens you’re not in rags; I’m tired of seeing women in rags!” I’m not sure that has ever been more relatable.

Thankfully, this upcoming fall, we’re seeing a shift back into the real world, but further back than you may recall… fits are easing, the double-breasted jacket is back in play, and the five-pocket is giving way to the trouser again. This is not to say you should start shopping for Michael Jordan’s wardrobe of the 90s… you should still wear your proper size, and make sure the styles are current. Two of the best ways to tell are: the gorge (where the lapel and collar meet) on your coat should still be just below your collarbone, and your pants shouldn’t have pleats.

Proportions also matter. When I say fits are easing, I mean bridging the gap between 90s MJ and Peewee Herman, back to a normal and timeless drape. Garments should be tailored, but not skin-tight and short, as you may see on some celebrities today. Remember, just because an athlete or celebrity is wearing it doesn’t mean it looks good. In attempts to be unique, many times they end up looking rather ridiculous. Of course, there are exceptions, and this is where the difference between fashion and style is displayed. One of my favorite style quotes regarding this is simple, yet powerful, from Yves Saint Laurent: “Fashions fade; style is eternal.” The impact of this statement is evident through the likes of icons such as Cary Grant, Paul Newman, Princess Diana, and Audrey Hepburn. Everything they wore in their respective eras is still relevant today. Cam Newton’s latest fiasco will never be that.

Take the time to invest in quality, timeless pieces, and they will take care of you for years to come. The building in which Hampton’s is now located is one of downtown Mooresville’s oldest, and seeing the quality of craftsmanship in the hand-carved beams, bricks, and flooring just reinforces that style in all aspects is undying. I invite you to visit our new home at 138 North Main Street and see the tasteful beauty in both the menswear and architecture… we’d love to have you and help inspire your next great style endeavor.

HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY:

CELEBRATING THE POWER of POSITIVITY AND JOY

Happiness Happens Day, observed on August 8th, is a special occasion dedicated to celebrating and spreading joy. This day serves as a reminder to embrace positivity, appreciate the little things in life, and find happiness in everyday moments. In this article, we will explore the significance of Happiness Happens Day, its origins, and ways to participate in this uplifting celebration. Join us as we delve into the power of happiness and the impact it can have on our lives.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY

Happiness Happens Day holds great significance in promoting wellbeing and highlighting the importance of positive emotions. Here are a few reasons why this day is worth celebrating:

Focus on the Present: Happiness Happens Day encourages us to live in the present moment and appreciate the joy that surrounds us. It reminds us to find happiness in simple pleasures, such as a warm cup of coffee, a beautiful sunset, or a heartfelt conversation with a loved one.

Mindset and Resilience: Embracing happiness helps cultivate a positive mindset and builds resilience to overcome challenges. By shifting our focus to the positive aspects of life, we can develop coping mechanisms that allow us to navigate difficult times with greater strength and optimism.

Spreading Joy: Happiness is contagious, and by celebrating Happiness Happens Day, we can inspire others to find joy in their own lives. Acts of kindness, sharing uplifting messages, or engaging in positive conversations can have a ripple effect, creating a more joyful and compassionate world.

Mental and Physical Health Benefits: Research has shown that happiness has numerous benefits for our well-being. It can boost our immune system, reduce stress levels, improve cardiovascular health, enhance creativity, and increase overall life satisfaction. By actively seeking happiness, we contribute to our own mental and physical health.

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE IN HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY

Practice Gratitude: Take a moment to reflect on the things you are

grateful for. Write down a list of things that bring you joy, whether it's supportive relationships, good health, or moments of personal achievement. Share your gratitude with others and encourage them to do the same.

Random Acts of Kindness: Spread happiness by performing random acts of kindness throughout the day. Offer a kind gesture to a stranger, send an uplifting message to a friend, or donate to a charity. Small acts of kindness have the power to brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect.

THE ADVANTAGES OF FARMER’S MARKETS AND FARM-TO-TABLE FOOD FOR YOUR FAMILY

In our fast-paced modern world, it is becoming increasingly important to make conscious choices about the food we consume. Farmer’s markets and the farm-to-table movement offer a unique opportunity to connect with local farmers, support the community, and prioritize the well-being of our families. This article explores the numerous benefits of embracing farmer’s markets and farm-to-table food for your family’s health, nutrition, and overall happiness.

Freshness and Nutritional Value

One of the most significant advantages of farmer’s markets is the availability of fresh, locally grown produce. Unlike supermarket produce, which often travels long distances, farm-to-table food is harvested at its peak ripeness and brought directly to the market. This means that the fruits, vegetables, and other products retain their maximum nutritional value. By incorporating these fresh, nutrient-rich foods into your family’s diet, you can enhance their overall well-being and promote healthy growth and development.

Support for Local Economy and Community

Choosing farmer’s markets and farm-to-table food is not just about what’s on your plate; it’s also about supporting the local economy and community. By purchasing directly from farmers and local producers, you contribute to the growth and sustainability of small-scale agriculture. This support helps farmers continue their practices, preserve farmland, and promote biodiversity. Additionally, farmer’s markets provide a vibrant community space, fostering connections between residents, farmers, artisans, and local businesses. By participating in this local food ecosystem, you become an active member of your community.

Environmental Sustainability

Opting for farm-to-table food has positive environmental implications. Locally sourced products require less transportation, reducing the carbon footprint associated with

long-distance shipping. Furthermore, small-scale farmers often use sustainable agricultural practices, such as organic farming or regenerative agriculture, which prioritize soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity preservation. By supporting these practices, you contribute to the protection of our planet’s natural resources and help build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Seasonal Variety and Culinary Adventure

Farmer’s markets provide an ever-changing array of seasonal produce, offering an exciting culinary adventure for your family. By embracing the availability of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs, you can experiment with new flavors and diversify your family’s diet. Encourage your children to explore the market, interact with farmers, and learn about the origins of their food. By involving them in this process, you foster a deeper appreciation for the culinary arts and educate them about the importance of sustainable food choices.

Enhanced Food Safety and Transparency

In a world where food safety is a growing concern, farmer’s markets offer a refreshing alternative. By purchasing directly from farmers, you can have peace of mind knowing the source of your food and how it is produced. You can inquire about farming methods, pesticide usage, and animal welfare. This direct connection between consumers and producers fosters transparency and builds trust, enabling you to make informed choices that align with your family’s values.

Embracing farmer’s markets and farm-to-table food is a powerful way to prioritize your family’s health, support the local economy, and contribute to environmental sustainability. By incorporating fresh, locally sourced produce into your meals, you can enhance nutrition, promote community engagement, and foster a deeper understanding of where our food comes from. So, join the farm-to-table movement, savor the flavors of the seasons, and take a step towards a healthier, more connected, and sustainable lifestyle for your family.

QUALITY CARE FOR YOUR GREAT OUTDOORS

AS THE SEASONS CHANGE, THERE’S ALWAYS AN OUTDOOR PROJECT OR TWO ON THE HOME WISHLIST! WHILE THE END GAME IS THE BEST POSSIBLE LOOK FOR YOUR HOME—YOU ALSO WANT TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT YOUR FAMILY CAN TRULY SPEND TIME ENJOYING.

If you haven’t met Andrew and Brandi Lankford of Andrews Mowing & Landscaping—this hardworking husband and wife duo lead a team who will always make your home project their top priority. Homeowners know the value of knowing who and when to call when efficiency and quality is an absolute must!

Andrews Mowing & Landscaping is a one-stop shopping experience for everything your home’s outdoor space needs. Their story officially began in 2005, when Andrew fine-tuned his skills of caring for the yards of neighbors and family members, while realizing he had found a passion— and a career. Eighteen years later, he and Brandi now manage a flourishing business with three of the most dedicated crews you’ll find anywhere, including a dedicated mowing crew!

It’s easy to contact them online about a specific home project you have in mind, or check scheduling options for regular mowing and landscaping—tasks that can sometimes be booked several months out, so call early! Those lawn care visits can also include seeding and mulching—as well as expert edging, and the beginning of each new season always calls for trimming and fresh pine needles. Sometimes those labor-intensive outdoor jobs are best left to the experts!

Another project example: The team recently re-mulched a pond they installed two years ago, and are now caring for the pond full-time, so the home owners can simply savor its beauty.

Beautiful hardscape improvements are also a mainstay at Andrews Mowing & Landscaping—and their portfolio of projects includes cozy patios, sidewalks, fire pits, attractive (and practical!) retaining walls, along with outdoor kitchens and bars for all your lakeside entertaining. No job you could envision is too big or too small—even borders or retaining walls for small flower beds are a common request.

Making a client’s dream come to life is what drives this familycentered business, explains Brandi. “We have big dreams and high hopes ourselves, so we know how good it feels to actually accomplish making your vision a reality!”

She and Andrew are true believers in living your best life outdoors, which begins with a comfortable, inviting space to share with your family and friends. They also know building— and maintaining—strong client relationships should be an everyday goal, and that’s where the strengths of every team member really shine.

“We take pride in what we do,” Brandi adds. “We will go above and beyond to be sure you are totally thrilled with the finished product. We don’t believe in short-cuts, and if something isn’t perfect when we finish a project, we will do what we need to do to make it right.”

Brandi and Andrew also encourage clients to ask questions and be involved in the design process—creating a camaraderie between vendor and customer that always results in a successful finish. “We never rush the process of giving a client a quote,”adds Brandi. “We want the style and details of the finished product to be thoroughly researched before the work begins.”

That might mean learning a new technique to achieve a client’s goal, or putting to use Brandi and Andrew’s unique individual skills that help make the team effort a success!

If your outdoor space needs a refresh or maybe you’re dreaming of an entirely new design direction for your patio or outdoor kitchen, give Brandi and Andrew a call at 336-624-8357 for a free consultation and estimate. “They did an amazing job trimming my bushes and pine needling. Our yard looks great. Very nice people as well!”—TYLER S.

“We were pleased with Andrew and his team. They fixed my SUPER messed up yard, removed a buried pool, and a ton of concrete for me (well, many tons if we’re talking in literal terms.) Communication with Andrew was very efficient, and the team was nice and very respectful of my property. I’d definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone who asks!” MARYCHRIS A.

“They are fantastic! They put in a beautiful patio and fixed our long-standing drainage issues. I can’t say enough good things about the team!” —BRITTANY N.

“The Andrews Mowing & Landscaping team is always very nice and polite. They will give you a fair estimate on whatever you need! I am definitely going to hire them this year.”—JAMIE M.

“My driveway was in bad shape, and it needed grading and new rock. We tried to do the work ourselves, but the hillside needed work, too. Andrew was able to see the problem—and fix it. Now, the driveway looks great, no more massive holes of thick mud to drive through. It’s now a smooth ride! I am very impressed. Give this crew a call when you need work done. They will treat you right, & I’m sure you’ll like the end results. Thank you Andrews Landscaping & Brandi, you’re the best!”—LYNN S.

“I have tried five other lawn care services and no one compares to Andrews. They are reliable, professional, and kind!”—SUE C.

COMBINED WITH THEIR GREAT LOVE OF THE OUTDOORS, DOING BUSINESS WITH BRANDI AND ANDREW MEANS AN EMPHASIS ON PROFESSIONALISM, PUNCTUALITY, RESPONSIVENESS, AND VALUE, AND CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS EAGER TO SHARE THEIR POSITIVE EXPERIENCES.

COME SAIL away!

If you’re ready to steal away and leave your stress and worries at the dock, come check out Island Vibes Charter in Sherrills Ford, NC.

Owner Dustin Keith knows your first cruise with them certainly won’t be your last, and he’s happy to offer clients a little slice of paradise!

“One year for our anniversary my wife, Andrea, and I went to Jamaica and stayed at a little resort there,” Dustin shares. “The highlight of that trip for me was getting out on the water on a group charter. The reggae was playing, everyone had something delicious in their hand, and it was truly one of the most relaxing experiences I had ever had at that point in my life.”

He remembers thinking how cool it would be to bring a similar experience to Lake Norman!

“We’ve offered the boat club and rental boats for 15 years now, but I’ve always dreamed of running a charter business that would allow people to forget all their worries, kick back, relax and enjoy the company of their friends and family— while we take care of everything else!” he adds.

The only decision you’ll need to make at Island Vibes Charter is choosing between the super classy “Le Bon Vie” or the slightly sassier tiki barge, “Island Girl”—depending on your group or the occasion. After that, the main goal here is good times, good music, and an ambiance of pure relaxation.

LE BON VIE —which literally means “The Good Life” is a beautifully maintained Azimut Atlantis Italian sport yacht, at just over 41 feet of sleek design. She provides ultra comfortable, open-air seating for up to 12 guests—along with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large salon and galley, three air conditioners, and last but not least—an incredible sound system! Le Bon Vie checks every box if you’re looking for a romantic sail, an anniversary celebration, or even a company outing.

On the flip side, join your friends to be whisked away on the ISLAND GIRL , a 400-square-foot floating tiki boat that can accommodate up to 18 guests, with a full tiki bar complete with under-bar lighting, Adirondack chairs for some sacred sun time, Bluetooth sound system for your party tunes, and yes, onboard bathroom facilities! Slightly more unconventional than a cruise on the sport yacht, the Island Girl is perfect for bachelor or bachelorette parties, birthday

parties, reunions, or just a sunset cruise with friends. It’s definitely the setting to let your hair down, and enjoy the ride!

With Island Vibes Charter, you can choose from two options: A private charter allows you to rent the entire boat, with a basket of snacks and complimentary ice chest full of water and soft drinks, and where you go is 100% customizable.

A public charter gives you a front row seat to making some new friends on the lake! With both, you’re allowed to bring your own beverages or purchase them at our tiki bar before you board—including beer, wine, and champagne.

“All of our charters have you in the capable hands of a U.S. Coast Guard certified master captain, with years of experience boating

on Lake Norman,” adds Dustin.

You can also arrange for the Island Vibes Charter’s own steward, Robin, to be onboard your yacht. With over 20 years experience in the hospitality industry, she can be available to serve meals or assist with beverages for an additional fee, and she is CPR and AED trained, for medical emergencies.

professionally maintained vessel makes all the difference. The crew here is fully focused on comfort and quality, and the property also offers a fully stocked tiki bar, local favorite The Landing Restaurant and hotel, and restrooms for your convenience before and after you sail.

MEET THE VOLUNTEER WHO LAUNCHED THE JOURNEY!

I N MAY OF 2017, PATTY KORN CONTACTED THE LINCOLN COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND ASKED IF THERE WAS A COMMISSIONER WHO CARED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND WHO WOULD CHAMPION SEVERAL ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES, INCLUDING MAKING LINCOLN COUNTY AN AFFILIATE OF KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL.

This is how Commissioner Anita McCall responded, “Patty, you are the leader! You don’t need a commissioner to champion it — you already are the champion.”

“After Commissioner McCall’s supportive email, and with former Commissioner Rich Permenter’s encouragement, fellow Denver residents Ben Benoit (who is now deceased), George Fischer, Betty Hickey, Bob Seitz, Michele Velligan, and I began the work to make Lincoln County an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful,” explains Patty. “Two county employees, Joshua Grant and Jeanette Johnson, joined our efforts, and in May of 2019, after meeting all the requirements, Keep Lincoln County Beautiful was officially recognized as an affiliate.”

A non-profit organization founded in 1953, Keep America Beautiful is the largest community improvement organization in the United States, with more than 620 affiliate organizations.

Patty has lived in Denver since 2004, after serving 20 years in the Air Force. Having moved frequently during her military career, she sadly says she has never lived in an area with so much roadside litter. “I don’t want children in our area to grow up thinking this is how roadsides are supposed to look,” she adds.

Patty is motivated to improve her community’s appearance, and she’s not alone! “There are now three Keep Lincoln County Beautiful volunteer committees: Beautification, Litter Prevention, and Recycling,” Patty explains. There is a KLCB

Board of Directors which is composed of three members from the community, three members from businesses/industry, and three members from government (Lincoln County, City of Lincolnton, and Lincoln County Schools). Within each of these three groups, there is a member from the eastern, central, and western areas of the County. Jenna Harmon is the Executive Director of KLCB.

Since KLCB’s inception in May 2019, volunteers have devoted 3,046 hours, and have picked up 5,461 bags of roadside litter.

Patty rotated off the KLCB Board of Directors after serving three years as President, but is still very active in the cause. “I do a litter pickup or a median cleanup several times a week, work on beautification projects in the Denver area, and lead two KLCB events each year, including our participation in the Denver Christmas Parade and the Lake Norman Cleanup, also known as the Catawba Riversweep,” she adds.

Patty is also the Chairperson of the Denver Beautification Committee, which she organized

in August of 2021 to accomplish other beautification projects around the community. Those include a tree planting project at North Lincoln Middle School, several beautification projects at East Lincoln High School, and installation of the statue of a girl reading on a bench at the Shanklin Library in 2023. Denver

resident Mrs. Elaine Carter generously donated the funds for the trees at NLMS and the statue at the library.

One last note from Patty — if you see her out by the roadside, thank her “silently” for her good work — she says she appreciates your support, but honking horns can be scary!

If you are interested in more information about Keep Lincoln County Beautiful contact Patty at pattykornpjk@aol.com or call 704-451-7313, or Jenna Harmon at jharmon@lincolncounty.org or 704-7329030. Donations to KLCB can be made via their website www.klcbnc.org, or by mailing a check to Keep Lincoln County Beautiful, 353 Generals Blvd, Lincolnton, NC 28092. Donations to the Denver Beautification Committee can be made to the East Lincoln Betterment Association (ELBA), P.O. Box 922, Denver, NC 28037 (please write “Beautification” on your check.) Donations to GoFundMe Litter-Free Denver NC also help fund Patty’s volunteer roadside litter pickups and median cleanups.

CELL PHONE COURTESY A REMINDER FOR RESPECTFUL AND MINDFUL PHONE USAGE

In today’s digital age, cell phones have become an integral part of our lives. However, as we embrace the convenience and connectivity they provide, it’s essential to remember the importance of cell phone courtesy. Being mindful of our phone usage and practicing respectful behavior can greatly enhance our social interactions and maintain a harmonious environment. This article key reminders about cell phone courtesy, focusing on aspects such as public spaces, social settings, and the impact of our actions on others. Let’s strive for a balanced and considerate approach to cell phone usage.

CELL PHONE COURTESY IN PUBLIC SPACES

• KEEP VOLUME IN CHECK: When using your cell phone in public spaces, be mindful of the volume of your ringtone, notifications, and speakerphone conversations. Adjust your settings to ensure they are audible only to you and avoid causing disruptions or distractions to others.

• RESPECT PERSONAL SPACE: When in crowded areas or public transportation, be mindful of your surroundings. Avoid talking loudly on your phone or engaging in personal conversations that may invade the personal space of those around you. Maintain a respectful distance and consider the comfort of others.

• BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS: Pay attention to your surroundings while using your cell phone in public spaces. Avoid obstructing walkways, staircases, or entrances as you text or browse. Being aware of your surroundings ensures that you do not inadvertently inconvenience or endanger others.

CELL PHONE COURTESY IN SOCIAL SETTINGS

• PRIORITIZE FACE-TO-FACE INTERACTIONS: When in the company of others, be present and engaged in the conversation. Give your full attention to the people you are with rather than constantly checking your phone. Show respect and interest in their company, fostering deeper connections and meaningful interactions.

• SEEK PERMISSION FOR PHONE USE: In social gatherings or meetings, it is courteous to seek permission before using your phone. Excuse yourself briefly if you need to respond to an urgent call or message, ensuring that you are not disregarding the ongoing conversation or interrupting the flow of the gathering.

• AVOID EXCESSIVE PHONE USE: Spending excessive time on your phone during social interactions can be perceived as rude or disinterested. Be mindful of the balance between phone usage and active participation in conversations or activities. Show respect and attentiveness to those around you.

THE IMPACT OF CELL PHONE COURTESY ON OTHERS

• RESPECTFUL COMMUNICATION: Texting or calling others at appropriate times shows respect for their schedules and boundaries. Avoid contacting others during late hours or important engagements unless it is absolutely necessary.

PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENTS: In professional settings, demonstrate cell phone courtesy by silencing your device during meetings, presentations, or important discussions. Focus on the matters at hand and avoid distractions that can hinder productivity or impede effective communication.

CULTURAL SENSITIVITY: Be aware of cultural norms and expectations regarding cell phone usage, particularly in public spaces or international settings. Different cultures may have varying perceptions of appropriate cell phone behavior, so it is important to be respectful and adapt accordingly.

Cell phone courtesy plays a significant role in maintaining respectful and mindful interactions in our increasingly connected world. By being conscious of our phone usage, respecting personal space, and prioritizing face-to-face interactions, we can foster positive communication, deeper connections, and a harmonious social environment. Let’s strive to be considerate of others and make cell phone courtesy an integral part of our digital lives, promoting understanding and respect in all our interactions.

BOOSTING PRODUCTIVITY WITH A Time Management Game-Changer

THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE

In a world filled with distractions and endless tasks, maintaining focus and productivity can be a challenge. The Pomodoro Technique offers a simple yet effective approach to time management, helping individuals overcome procrastination, enhance concentration, and maximize productivity. Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, this technique has gained popularity worldwide. By breaking work into manageable intervals, the Pomodoro Technique allows for focused bursts of activity followed by brief, rejuvenating breaks. This article explores the principles of the Pomodoro Technique and how it can revolutionize your productivity.

THE BASICS OF THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE

The Pomodoro Technique revolves around the concept of working in short, timed intervals known as "Pomodoros." A typical Pomodoro consists of 25 minutes of dedicated work, followed by a 5-minute break. After completing four Pomodoros, take a longer break of around 15-30 minutes. This structured approach capitalizes on the brain's ability to maintain focus for shorter periods while allowing for regular mental rest and rejuvenation.

BREAKING THE CYCLE OF PROCRASTINATION

Procrastination often thrives on the overwhelming nature of tasks. The Pomodoro Technique breaks this cycle by encouraging you to focus on a single Pomodoro at a time. This approach eliminates the anxiety associated with tackling a massive task, as you commit to working on it for just 25 minutes. Once you begin, you'll often find it easier to continue beyond the initial Pomodoro, building momentum and making progress.

ENHANCING CONCENTRATION AND AVOIDING BURNOUT

Continuous work without breaks can lead to mental fatigue and decreased productivity. The Pomodoro Technique combats this by incorporating regular, short breaks. These breaks serve as opportunities to step away from your work, clear your mind, and recharge. By adhering to the designated break times, you give your brain the chance to consolidate information, process ideas, and prevent burnout, ultimately improving your ability to maintain focus during work intervals.

TIME BOXING AND TASK PRIORITIZATION

The Pomodoro Technique promotes effective time boxing, the practice of allocating specific time slots to tasks. By estimating how many Pomodoros a task requires, you gain a clearer understanding of its scope and allocate time accordingly. This enables better task prioritization, as you focus on the most crucial or time-sensitive tasks first. The technique encourages you to work within the constraints of a single Pomodoro, eliminating the urge to spend excessive time on low-value activities.

FLEXIBILITY AND ADAPTATION

While the traditional Pomodoro cycle consists of 25 minutes of work and 5-minute breaks, it's important to remember that the technique is adaptable to individual preferences and needs. Some individuals may find their optimal work-to-break ratio is different, such as 50 minutes of work followed by a 10-minute break. Experiment with different intervals to find what works best for you and be open to adjusting the duration based on task complexity or personal energy levels.

TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES TO AID POMODORO IMPLEMENTATION

Various tools and techniques can assist in implementing the Pomodoro Technique effectively. Timer apps, such as Focus@Will, Forest, or Tomato Timer, provide audio cues and countdowns to keep you on track. Productivity apps like Trello or Todoist help you organize tasks and track progress. Additionally, consider incorporating strategies like task batching, where you group similar tasks together during a Pomodoro, or using the Pomodoro breaks for physical movement or relaxation exercises to enhance the overall benefits.

The Pomodoro Technique offers a structured approach to time management that boosts productivity and combats procrastination. By embracing focused work intervals, regular breaks, and efficient task prioritization, individuals can experience increased concentration, reduced burnout, and greater task completion. Implement the Pomodoro Technique into your daily routine, and unlock your full productivity potential.

LETTING GO IN RETIREMENT: Endings and Beginnings

If you’ve been partnered for a long time, the heartache and confusion of breaking up may be difficult to recall. But it’s there —deep in the recesses of your memory. Retiring from a long career can evoke much of the same angst. We struggle with our mixed emotions and sense of loss while also wondering if there is something wrong with us. All, while the still working-waiting for retirement folks can’t fathom why we aren’t giddy with joy and relief that we’ve crossed the finish line and landed in that coveted place: RETIREMENT.

But for many of us, it’s not that simple. For several decades, my work was a huge part of my identity. Even as newer technology posed a challenge, and younger folks stepped in when my same-age colleagues retired, I still felt deeply satisfied with my work and my contributions. It’s been a few months now since the paperwork was completed, officially sealing the fact that I am indeed retired. In the space of those few months, I’ve paid close attention to my experience and learned a few key lessons about endings and beginnings that have helped me in this transition:

RETIREMENT IS BOTH A WAY OF LIFE AND A STATE OF MIND

While the paperwork is official and final, the habits and flow developed over a lifetime of work tend to linger. It’s taken the better part of three months to remember that I don’t need to check my email immediately after waking up. There are no Zoom calls to attend, no learning strategies to develop, or stories to write. Every day I get better at remembering and embracing new and fulfilling ways to use my well-earned time.

MAKE ONE OR TWO LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO MARK YOUR TRANSITION

I did two things: welcomed a rescue puppy into our life, and got my nose pierced. Both have brought me delight. “Paris,” our mixed mini poodle, keeps me moving with her energy and amused with her endless and indiscriminate curiosity. The nose piercing has garnered mixed reactions—I am not surprised. I have been planning it for at least thirty years and chosen it to mark this transition. A diamond, no less!

IT TAKES TIME TO ADJUST TO A NEW SENSE OF SELF

This new “way of life and state of mind” is foreign to me, but I am adapting. I am reminded of how I have always enjoyed my own company and relished my independence. My little Paris quickly learned that while Mommy may go out for a few hours every day, she always returns.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND MANAGE YOUR TRIGGERS

I have only one email address, so I still get work emails that are accidentally sent to me. I also receive marketing emails from companies in my former industry. In the beginning, I was sucked right into reading all of them; it was an autopilot response triggered by my sincere interest in my field. Over time I learned to immediately delete the accidental work emails—no peeking out of curiosity. I also began to unsubscribe to those marketing emails. The last, and boldest step has been to delete and discard the electronic and physical files related to my former work. Just watching the space clear reinforces that I am indeed retired.

BE MINDFUL OF MAKING RADICAL CHANGES

TOO QUICKLY

Go easy. Retirement is a time for renewing your sense of self, for exploration, and for discovery.

WATERMELON: LUSCIOUS

& JUICY RED FRUIT WITH HARD GREEN OUTER LAYER

WATERMELON IS A NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSE.

Cut into triangle wedges, as kids grabbed slices off of the counter as our moms shoved us back outside to let the juices flow and not make a mess inside. Our slices were full of black seeds that we would enjoy spitting at our siblings and friends on a hot summer day, while rivers of sweet, red juice ran down our arms. Pink drips would run down our elbows and stain our shirts. Those simple summer memories that are so vivid.

I have always loved watermelon. My husband and kids cannot get enough. Unsliced it can sit on our counter for a week, but once I cut into it, it is gone the same day!

But, have you noticed that most watermelons are a seedless variety now? It is hard to find a watermelon in the store WITH those black seeds; 98% sold are seedless. Although much easier to eat, this means no more seed-spitting contests!! For me, this brings up issues of GMOs...BUT, that is another topic for another blog.

Watermelon season runs from May through October. Ninety-two percent water, watermelon is low in calories, as well as an excellent source of vitamin C and beta carotene. It is considered one of the cleanest, non-organic fruits to eat because of its thick skin. Watermelon contains lycopene; a powerful antioxidant proven to fight off certain types of cancer. I like it best sprinkled with sea salt.

When choosing a watermelon at the store, the skin should be slightly shiny. It should have a yellow or white spot on the surface somewhere and if you knock on it, it should sound hollow. You want to pick one that feels heavy for its size, usually meaning that it is full of juice.

Add watermelon to fruit salad. Fresh mint is a great compliment to a watermelon dish. Here are a couple of additional recipes to enjoy with your family.

WATERMELON-LEMONADE COOLER

• 15 cups seeded and cubed watermelon

• 2 (12-ounce) cans frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed

• 2 mint sprigs

• Ice

Process watermelon, in batches, in a blender or food processor until smooth. Combine concentrate and 2 mint sprigs, and cook in a saucepan over medium-high heat for 10 minutes. Stir together watermelon puree and lemonade mixture; cover and chill for 8 hours. Remove and discard mint. Stir and serve over ice. Garnish with mint sprig.

WATERMELON, FETA & BASIL SALAD

• 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

• 3 T fresh lemon juice

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 1 8 lb seedless watermelon cut into 1 1/2inch chunks

• 1 cup reduced-fat feta

• 1 small sweet onion

• 1 cup coarsely chopped basil leaves

In a large bowl, whisk the olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Add the watermelon, feta and onion. Stir gently. Garnish with the basil.

SUMMERTIME LOW COUNTRY BOIL

August is the perfect time to gather friends and family for a classic backyard feast, and what better dish to serve than a Low Country Boil! This easy-to-make meal not only feeds a large group, but also offers a great medley of various seafood options. The best part is that you can customize it to suit your taste preferences.

To create this mouthwatering feast, you’ll need some essential ingredients such as corn on the cob (4-6 cobs), sausage (1 pack of 4), shrimp (1.5-2 lbs), and a bag of red potatoes. However, I highly recommend adding some lobster tails (generally 4) and crab legs (2 lbs) into the mix. Apart from these, you’ll need a large pot or a turkey fryer (if you prefer to cook outdoors), a couple of lemons, an orange and a white onion. The quantity of ingredients depends on the number of people you’re serving, but the following proportions generally serve around four people.

Let’s get started with the cooking process. Fill your large pot or turkey fryer halfway with water, and bring it to a rolling boil. For an authentic and flavorful twist, add a generous amount of seasoning to the water. Old Bay seasoning is a popular choice, readily available in most stores. However, you can also explore seafood boil-specific seasonings at farmers markets or specialty stores. While your water is boiling, slice the cobs of corn in half, slice the red potatoes in half, slice your sausages into bite size slices and devein the shrimp (if not already deveined.)

Once the seasoned water is boiling, add the halved lemons and orange. Next, add the halved red potatoes to the pot. From this point, it’s time to start the countdown. Set a 20-minute timer, marking each step accordingly. At the 5-minute mark (15 minutes remaining), add diced andouille sausage (or any sausage of your choice) and onions. After 5 more minutes (10 minutes remaining), toss in the corn and crab legs. Finally, after 7 minutes (3 minutes remaining), add the shrimp and lobster tails. I also like to add more old bay seasoning throughout the cook as I’m adding each ingredient to get everything very well seasoned and full of flavor.

Once everything is done and your timer is up, turn off the burner and allow the boil to rest for a few minutes while you prepare the table. I suggest using a tablecloth or newspaper as a cover and arranging an assortment of hot sauces(Cackalacky Pepper sauce and old bay hot sauce are my favorites), melted butter, and crackers or cornbread alongside the boil.

Next, you’ll pour the contents of the pot onto the table or your chosen serving area and season all over with more old bay (or seafood seasoning of choice), squeeze some fresh lemon juice all on top and now it’s finally time to dig in! Enjoy!

4 Energy Conservation Tips to Lower Your Bills and Help the Environment

In today’s world, energy conservation is not only essential for reducing our carbon footprint but also for cutting down on our energy bills. With summer here, it’s crucial to find ways to conserve energy, especially during hot days when air conditioning is often running at full blast. Let’s explore various energy-saving tips that can make a significant impact on your energy consumption, such as adjusting your thermostat, managing appliances, and implementing smart practices.

HARNESS NATURAL VENTILATION

Take advantage of natural ventilation whenever possible. In the early mornings and evenings, when the outdoor temperature is cooler, open windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate. Use fans strategically to facilitate airflow and create a cooling breeze. Ceiling fans, in particular, can make a room feel up to 4 degrees Fahrenheit cooler without consuming as much energy as an air conditioner. By using natural ventilation and fans effectively, you can reduce your reliance on air conditioning and save on energy costs.

EFFICIENT LIGHTING

Switching to energy-efficient lighting options, such as LED bulbs, is a simple yet effective way to reduce your energy usage. LED bulbs use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer, which means fewer replacements. Moreover, LEDs produce less heat, reducing the strain on your air conditioning system during hot summer months. Remember to turn off lights when leaving a room to maximize your savings.

OPTIMIZE YOUR THERMOSTAT

UNPLUG & MANAGE APPLIANCES

Many appliances continue to consume energy even when they are turned off or in standby mode. This phenomenon, known as “vampire” or “phantom” energy, can contribute to a significant portion of your energy bill. To counter this, unplug electronic devices and appliances when they are not in use or use power strips with an on/off switch to easily disconnect multiple devices at once. Additionally, consider using energy-efficient appliances that bear the ENERGY STAR label, which are designed to consume less energy without sacrificing functionality.

One of the most effective ways to conserve energy during the summer is by optimizing your thermostat settings. Instead of maintaining a consistent temperature throughout the day and night, consider bumping your air conditioner’s temperature up a few degrees at night. Lowering your thermostat by just 1 degree Fahrenheit can save up to 3% on cooling costs. During the day, when you’re away or less active, raise the temperature a few degrees or use a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the settings. This way, you can still enjoy a comfortable environment while reducing your energy consumption.

Conserving energy is not only an eco-friendly practice but also a smart financial decision. By implementing the energy-saving tips mentioned above, you can significantly reduce your energy consumption and lower your monthly bills, particularly during the summer when air conditioning use is high. Small changes like adjusting your thermostat, utilizing natural ventilation, managing appliances, and using energy-efficient lighting can add up to substantial savings over time. So, make a conscious effort to conserve energy and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future while enjoying the benefits of reduced energy costs.

SHERRIE ANDERSON

Mothering, Ministry & Making a Difference

Spend a little time around Sherrie Anderson, the current Mrs. Lake Norman, and you’ll soon realize Faith is her true moral compass.

“Without it, I’m honestly not sure I would have survived all that life has thrown my way,” explains the mother of nine and wife of 32 years to husband James, who has navigated through tough times with amazing grace and resilience.

“Scripture tells us the Lord is our peace, and that’s what I cling to, especially when things felt hopeless and dark,” adds Sherrie. “While battling a chronic illness and at times wanting to give up, He is my strength, my shield, and my comfort. I credit the 25-plus years of being grounded in His Word for carrying me through these last 12 years dealing with illness, and the passing of my dad.”

Because of her health issues her family made the move south, and fell in love, calling the Lake Norman area home for over nine years now. Sherrie is thrilled to relaunch byGrace Ministries again, and recently held an event at the beautiful DuGaren Venue and Vineyards in Denver, NC.

“We have focused on launching locally for now, however, we look forward to expanding our reach once again in the near future!”

Sherrie encourages others to delve into God’s Word for themselves.

“The Word is not meant to be only educational, but also transformational,” she adds. “Learning that it’s OK to question and dig deeper is something I am passionate about.”

Sherrie also believes by touching the heart of a woman, you touch the heart of the home, and while byGrace originally started as a women’s ministry, it has grown into a ministry that includes both men’s and women’s studies. She’s open to travel for speaking engagements, and hoping to launch virtual events soon as well.

Another blessing, Sherrie’s time as Mrs. Lake Norman has afforded her the chance to reach others. She was encouraged by a previous pageant judge, who had been following her

meaningful, encouraging connections with others struggling with chronic illness, and has also provided fun opportunities to participate in community events such as Bliss By The Lake’s recent fashion show, judging the local Bandy’s Beauty Pageant, and other appearances around the community.”

Ever the entrepreneur, Sherrie also enjoyed 10 years of real estate experience in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, area. She took a hiatus to focus on homeschooling once her growing family moved to New York, but since relocating to North Carolina, she has enjoyed working in real estate once again.

“I love meeting new clients and helping them sell and find their dream homes in our beautiful community and beyond,” she adds.

After going through treatment, and learning how to manage her chronic illness, Sherrie has identified the importance of focusing on her physical health, which also boosts mental health.

“During the last three years I lost over 90 pounds and competed in three bodybuilding competitions,” she explains. “I’ve learned you must take care of yourself in order to better serve your family, and be the best version of yourself

Sherrie’s children range in age from 13 to 30 years old, one of whom is adopted and has lived on and off with her family since age nine. “He now lives with us full-time, has truly completed our family, and is a special part of our story.”

After struggling for nine years with an undiagnosed chronic illness, Sherrie was finally properly diagnosed with chronic Lyme Disease three years ago. Since then, she has made it a mission to advocate for others battling this disease, and works to bring much-needed awareness.

“Lyme Disease is one of the top misdiagnosed diseases in the U.S. today, and there are limited resources for testing and treatment options. Many treatments are not covered by health insurance, as often those that help most are considered integrative or functional medicine, and coverage isn’t offered for those types of services,” Sherrie explains.

After finally being diagnosed and undergoing treatment, Sherrie has joyfully been able to step back into ministry.

“I started byGrace Ministries 15 years ago on my 40th birthday,” she says. “We were living in New York, and my ministry was truly thriving prior to an accident that almost took the lives of our three youngest children. I had struggled for years with fatigue, and after the accident my health, both mental and physical, plummeted. That —along with caring for my ill father who was living with us at the time —unfortunately tabled the ministry for several years.”

journey on social media, to consider running for Mrs. North Carolina. It would open doors to share her Lyme disease journey, and offer a platform for advocacy.

“While there’s not an official pageant for Mrs. Lake Norman, there is an application process for running for Mrs. North Carolina America/ American, and each contestant can represent their chosen area of North Carolina,” explains Sherrie. “Since my family resides in the Lake Norman area —and I work this area in real estate —I chose to represent our beautiful Lake Norman community. It has allowed me to make

for work, and anything else you’re involved in. Learning to say ‘no’ and setting healthy boundaries without worrying what others may think has been one of my best choices. Realizing we can only pour into others out of what we pour into ourselves first is something I take seriously.”

“In a time where we are often overextended, it’s sometimes necessary to ask for help!” Sherrie reminds us.

THE SURPRISING BENEFITS OF laughing AT YOURSELF

I recently did something so stupid that I:

• Immediately laughed at myself

• Shared it in an email to a friend

In terms of my personal development, that’s pretty darn amazing, thank you very much.

It happened late one Friday afternoon when Dean and I were preparing for a “cocktail attire” party at a fancy, cool place in Winston. I fretted over what to wear, eventually landing on an uberstylish dress —one with a true designer label that I picked up years ago for barely a song back in Connecticut. It fits. Meaning, it still fits. There was just one small problem: my post-winter, milky white legs looked ridiculous. I needed that soft, smooth, tanned effect that would give me some color and cover a few persistently noncompliant veins. Voila! I recalled that I had a spray can of color tucked away somewhere behind the shampoos, hairsprays, serums, and creams. Yes! The clock was ticking and we’d soon need to leave, but surely I could get this done. So there I was, spraying with wild abandon without bothering to first refresh my memory about the suggested application method. I looked up from my legs and yes, they looked pretty darn good. Except that the white tile floor and walls were covered here and there, splattered in “Honey Tan.” I took a step back, followed by a deep intake of breath, and then...just laughed. It was a mess, but I felt so good, honestly.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Got it!

It wasn’t always like this, trust me. For much of my life, even as a child, I took everything —especially myself —too seriously. It was part of a protective veneer I developed to deal with feelings of inadequacy and even shame. Over time, I “got over it.” What I really mean

is that as I became more self-accepting, more confident, and more at ease with myself and others, I was able to relax my shoulders, to breathe more easily, to see things in perspective, and finally...to laugh at myself. I knew in my knowing that this was a good thing, and research suggests that being able to laugh at yourself:

• Enhances and expresses your selfacceptance and confidence. You understand that it’s perfectly okay to be imperfect, to be human.

• Reinforces that you don’t have to be mean to yourself when you do something ridiculous. You can keep things in perspective, even “enjoy” the moment, and move on.

• Makes you more relatable to others and sends the message that you are less likely to be harsh or judgmental —which strengthens your ability to connect with others.

• Releases stress and side steps embarrassment. Bingo!

• Fuels your resilience and saves it for matters more important than silly mishaps.

But can you take laughing at yourself “too far”?

The simple answer is Yes! Pay attention to how and how much you use selfdeprecating humor. If you notice that it is part of a pattern of negative self-talk, then you may be doing yourself more harm than good.

So the next time you inadvertently spray paint your white bathroom with a leg tanner (or do something equally ridiculous or silly) focus on laughing at yourself with kindness and compassion —instead of putting yourself down — which is no fun at all!

I see you!”

MARRIAGE HAS A GENERATIONAL IMPACT

YOUR MARRIAGE WILL IMPACT GENERATIONS. WHAT STORY WILL BE TOLD? WHAT LEGACY WILL BE LEFT?

It was dark, and I was not sure where the small little voice came from as I stood in the kitchen giving my wife a hug- “I see you!” I looked towards the staircase only to see this mop of curly brown hair poking around the corner, and before I could say a word, my sweet little girl, with drawn-out words and joy in her voice, said again- “I seeeee youuuuu!” As I moved towards her, she ran up the stairs wanting to be chased by Dad. As I tucked her back into bed, I was struck by the simplicity of her words and the profound implications-she was watching. She was a witness to her parent’s commitment and love and internalizing the significance of loyalty, dedication, and sacrifice.

OK—maybe she was not thinking any of that; she just saw us hugging one another and wanted me to chase her back upstairs. My wife says I am always looking for deep meaning in everything, guilty! Yet, have you ever stopped to think about the impact of your marriage on future generations, especially your children and grandchildren? They are watching whether we see it or not. Whether we are together or now separated, our marriages will have a ripple effect that extends beyond our own lives.

Through our years of working with couples and also sitting with them before they walk down the aisle, we have seen one common thread weave through every story-how their parent’s marriage and relationships have shaped their view of marriage. Family of origin and the picture painted for our children will have a generational impact and be carried on. What is the picture your marriage is painting or has? What story will unfold before your children, family, and friends? Together, let’s look at the significance of marriage and how it influences future generations:

1. FOUNDATION OF FAMILY. If we desire to live and leave a legacy, it will start with the foundation of family, the bedrock of our society. Marriage forms the foundation of the family unit, providing stability, love, and guidance for children. Our children will grow up in the environments we create. They’ll witness our love, conflicts, and how we navigate the highs and lows of life together. By providing stability, love, and a picture of marriage where your spouse comes first, we are laying the foundation for our children to build upon. Not a perfect foundation, but one where they see us fight for one another in the good and not-so-good times.

You may be reading this, and you and your children have experienced the pain of divorce, and it breaks our hearts to know this is the reality of many. Please know, even through a divorce and brokenness, you still have the opportunity to invest in and re-establish in the hearts of your children what a marriage can be. Yet remember, they are watching how you walk through a separation or divorce. Are you belittling your spousetheir father or mother? Are you being open with them about what’s taking place? Protect and nurture their hearts.

2. SPIRITUAL GROWTH. Living in a covenant of marriage is not always easy! My wife says I’m pretty perfect and don’t need to change a thing- NOT! Left to my own, there is no way I would be able to be the man I am called to be for her. I have to rely on God’s grace, develop sacrificial love, and cultivate forgiveness. The challenges we have faced, and the joys we have experienced have grown and shaped us. And guess what? Our children are watching. They see how we rely on God’s grace and

how our faith influences our actions. Faith, or the lack of will affect future generations. How is your faith shaping your marriage and children?

3. VALUES AND MORALS. I love hiking and backpacking, and one of the most important tools I need when “getting lost on purpose” is a compass. The compass serves as my guide, leading me on the right path forward. In marriage, we GET to demonstrate qualities such as love, integrity, and selflessness. These virtues become the compass shaping the values that children inherit. When they see us living these qualities, they learn what it means to be a person of character. As children see their parents live a life that honors one another and God, they are more likely to embrace those principles as they navigate their own lives and relationships.

4. HEALTHY ROLE MODELS. My wife and I have been married for 30 years, and I have always strived to be a healthy role model to our two girls. I have worked to display to my girls that they should settle for nothing less than a man that would treat them the way I treated their mom- with honor, respect, love, grace, and self-sacrifice. My children today look up to us. How they view us was not because we have a perfect marriage, the opposite is true. They watched as we navigated the difficult seasons and how we worked it out. They watched as we experienced the highs and celebrated together. Through every season, they watched as we attempted always to demonstrate what it meant to serve one another and build a healthy marriage.

Yes, your marriage has a generational impact and holds immense significance by providing the foundation for which your children will build their own family, spiritual growth, values, and legacy. Let’s strive to build a marriage that demonstrates to our children and those around us what it means to live a beautiful life that reflects grace, love, forgiveness, and hope. So the next time you are standing with your spouse embracing one another, look around the corner and maybe you will see a moppy head child standing there staring at you and with great joy saying, “I seeeee youuuuu!”

As The Untouchables in Denver, NC, begins commemorating an inspired 40 years in business, owner Scott Gilleland is proud of the accomplishment on many levels!

Of course there’s an amazing menu that never disappoints, and a genuine camaraderie between the staff and the community—but the one thing Scott is most proud of is the restaurant’s wonderful, loyal customers.

“We have the best customers in the world!” he explains. “Seeing second and third generation customers come in with their children and grandchildren is so special—we feel like we are part of those families.”

Scott began his career at The Untouchables as a busboy in 1987—four years after the restaurant opened in 1983 – and as its owner, he is continuing the tradition of delicious cuisine and impeccable service the Lake Norman community has come to respect. The restaurant originally opened in August of 1983, thanks to three local businessmen—Richard Howard, Charles Connor, and Marshall Digh. Jeff Bolick (owner of Boxcar Grille in Statesville), and also Scott’s mentor, later became an operating partner, and Scott went on to become a partner in 1997. He was able to become sole proprietor in 2004, and the much-loved tradition goes on!

“I’m very proud The Untouchables has been able to maintain its presence in the Maiden/ Denver area for 40 years,” says Scott.

He also attributes that success to continuously giving back to the community, an effort he’s been devoted to since the restaurant first opened. The Untouchables donates to schools, churches, non-profits, and those in need, with long-time restaurant manager, Hope Wise, organizing each charity event. Community spirit runs deep here, and the staff takes that relationship very seriously!

“I’m very proud we are able to support our local schools by hosting spirit nights at the restaurant,” says Scott. Police officers, EMS, and firefighters also receive discounts, as a way of giving thanks, while giving back.

There’s never a shortage of goodness on the menu either (including the best pizza in town!), and Scott knows another key factor in the restaurant’s success is their collection of made-fromscratch recipes, and the use of only the freshest ingredients.

“Every day we start off with a bag of flour and make our own dough!” he shares. “We also make our pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, and fresh-cut all our vegetables. Of course we handpatty our half-pound burgers, and we make our own salads and dressings for the salad bar. Pretty much anything that can be made in-house, we make right here!”

Scott and The Untouchables team are planning several events and special promotions for their 40th anniversary, so stay up-to-date with their Facebook page. They want to invite you and your family to be part of every fun—and delicious—opportunity!

Visit the restaurant at 6020 S NC16, Maiden, NC 28650 at the Intersection of Business NC 16 and NC 150, 704-483-9737, for dine-in or take-out—and offer Scott and the staff a hearty congratulations! Visit their website to check out the menu at untouchablespizza. com. Restaurant hours are Monday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.

EXPERIENCING THE BENEFITS OF JOURNALING

WHEN IT COMES TO STORING MEMORIES, ONE OF THE EASIEST AND MOST FULFILLING WAYS IS TO WRITE THEM DOWN.

Through writing you can accomplish many things. From becoming more self-aware to helping set goals, journaling is an excellent method for all. Journaling is also a great process to help secure memories that will change as you encounter different seasons of life. From starting a new school, new job, or new relationship, journaling can secure these memories forever.

Journaling does not need to fit one mold. From keeping a daily written diary, to creating an online blog where you can type down inner thoughts to share with family and friends, journaling does not have to look uniform to reap the benefits. Interested in what these benefits of journaling are? Read on, for the top five reasons why you should accept the power that comes with expressing your feelings in writing.

According to the article, “The Power of Writing - The Journaling Technique,” by Roxana Christina Petrus, journaling can help slow down your mind’s process. “Your thoughts are moving extremely fast in your brains, and by deciding to write things down, you can actually choose what to focus on, what is more powerful or important right now.” Journaling can also help “organize your ideas and start to feel more in control,” the article states. By writing down your feelings, you can release them, and let go of the anxiety that comes with certain thoughts.

Consistent learning is key to good mental health. By reflecting on the positive and negative choices we have made in life, you can learn from the mistakes made, and hopefully, not repeat them in the future. Likewise, taking note of daily experiences builds selfawareness, which can lead to a sharp mind that pays attention to the big and intricate details of daily living. Journaling during trips can advance learning, since you are reflecting on the new experiences you have encountered. Anything from enjoying a new cuisine, language, or activity, through reflective writing, you can continue to learn and process an experience.

Everyone has an experience in their life they wish had gone better. Instead of harping on the “what could have been,” try writing down your anxieties. This simple task allows your mind to get off the hamster wheel of anxiety and release all concerns to the paper. It is surprising how liberated you will feel after this simple action—journaling can help take the burden off your shoulders and finally feel some type of relief.

By choosing to “look at the bright side of things,” you are choosing to not focus on past negative experiences. There are a variety of different writing activities that can help you learn how to write in a positive tone. From creating a gratitude journal, where every morning or evening, you write down one thing you are grateful for, to an ongoing list of potential goals, acknowledging your feelings and writing them down in a positive tone, can help you feel content with the life you lead.

BENEFIT #5: JOURNALING CAN HELP OUR INNER CHILD.

By taking the time to journal, you are required to think back to memories from the past—both the good and bad. Having an opportunity to write about experiences we have had as a child or young adult can be extremely therapeutic, especially if you have experienced any type of trauma. According to the Psychology Today article, “Journaling About Trauma and Stress Can Heal Your Body,” by Susan Biali Haas, M.D., recommends journaling patients, especially if they are feeling stuck or overwhelmed. “It’s a profoundly helpful window into the behindthe-scenes workings of my mind, heart, and life.” However, it is vital to note that you must be careful about how they write. “People who focus exclusively on venting negative emotions might experience worsening health,” the article notes. To experience the positive effects of journaling, you must try to find a positive meaning that came out of a negative experience. This by no means is easy, which is why writing can at times be extremely challenging. However, often the most difficult activities in life can be the most rewarding—including journaling.

BENEFIT #1: IT CAN SETTLE YOUR MIND. BENEFIT #2: IT CAN PROMOTE DAILY LEARNING. BENEFIT #3: IT CAN SLOW DOWN REPETITIVE, NON-PRODUCTIVE THOUGHTS. BENEFIT #4: REGULAR WRITING CAN HELP YOU CHOOSE TO FOCUS ON THE POSITIVES OF LIFE.

A FUN NIGHT FOR THE BEST CAUSE—CHILDREN!

“CHILDREN ARE GREAT IMITATORS. SO GIVE THEM SOMETHING GREAT TO IMITATE!”

Founded in 2013, the Catawba Valley Guardian ad Litem Association equips community volunteers to serve abused and neglected children by advocating for their best interests in court.

CVGAL is run entirely by volunteers who believe strongly in the mission of enriching the lives of local children in foster care, and 100% of all monies raised for this outstanding endeavor go towards supporting the group’s mission.

Co-chair Wendy Stroud shares details of the group’s Third Annual Casino Night fundraiser coming up next month—always a fun night and an excellent way to continue the support of abused and neglected children.

“CVGAL will be holding its 3rd Annual Casino Night on September 20, 2023, at Novel Taproom, 12 N. Ashe Avenue, Newton, NC,” says Wendy. “As before, the event is hosted by Novel Taproom and Catawba First Insurance, with all the evening’s proceeds benefiting the CVGAL child assistance fund.”

PLEASE CONSIDER HOW YOU CAN BECOME INVOLVED!

“We are in need of monetary table sponsors (a $500 donation) or contributions for our raffle baskets for this event,” says Wendy. “Individual tickets are $100 each, or $175 for two, and tickets will include a catered meal (BBQ, slaw, baked beans, bread, chips, dessert), drink tickets, $5,000 Playing Chip, and raffle tickets. We look forward to raising funds for our foster children of Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties, and could not do this without community support.”

The Catawba Valley Guardian ad Litem Association (CVGAL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides local abused and neglected children with educational experiences that include summer camp, technology, and tutoring to help them be more successful in school. The group also offers these children life-changing opportunities to participate in sports and extracurricular activities such as art, music, and band, and in 2017 began offering college scholarships to foster youth enrolled in a trade school, community college, or university.

Thanks to incredible donor generosity, CVGAL has been able to assist children in our community with over $6,000 in aid since the beginning of 2023. Their assistance has provided tutoring, camps, athletic and music equipment, field trips, laptops, adulting needs, and much more!

“We also assist the NC Guardian ad Litem program in Judicial District 25 with recruiting and retaining volunteers to advocate for these children in court,” explains Wendy. “Our program desperately needs these trained volunteers to be a voice for children in the court system, and to be that one person who will help them navigate within the legal system.”

For more information on sponsorships or tickets to the September 20th event, please email Wendy Stroud at Wenstroud25@gmail.com. Learn more about the Catawba Valley Guardian ad Litem Association or donate online at cvgal.org, and reach their office at P.O. Box 9060, Hickory, NC 28603, or email CatawbaValleyGALA@gmail.com.

THE BENEFITS of JOINING A BOOK CLUB & HOW TO START YOUR OWN

Book clubs offer a wonderful opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, expand your literary horizons, and connect with fellow book lovers. Whether you’re an avid reader or looking to explore new genres, joining a book club can provide numerous benefits. This article explores the advantages of being part of a book club and provides practical tips on how to start your own. So, grab your favorite novel and let’s dive into the world of book clubs.

THE BENEFITS OF JOINING A BOOK CLUB

Community and Connection: Book clubs foster a sense of community and provide a space for like-minded individuals to come together and share their love for literature. Engaging in stimulating conversations about books can lead to meaningful connections and new friendships.

Diverse Reading Choices: Book clubs often offer a diverse selection of books, exposing readers to genres and authors they might not have discovered on their own. This broadens literary perspectives, introduces new ideas, and expands reading preferences.

Intellectual Stimulation: Book club discussions encourage critical thinking and deep analysis of literary themes, characters, and plotlines. Exploring different interpretations and hearing varied perspectives can enhance intellectual growth and broaden one’s understanding of literature.

Accountability and Motivation: Being part of a book club provides a sense of accountability, as members are expected to read the selected book within a specified timeframe. This motivation can help overcome reading slumps, encourage consistent reading habits, and ensure that books are explored and enjoyed.

Enhanced Reading Experience: Engaging in book discussions allows readers to gain deeper insights into the text and appreciate the layers and nuances of the story. Hearing different viewpoints can shed light on aspects that may have been missed or provide fresh interpretations.

HOW TO START YOUR OWN BOOK CLUB

Define Your Club’s Purpose: Determine the focus and goals of your book club. Will it revolve around a specific genre, author, or theme? Are you looking for a casual or more structured approach? Defining these aspects will help attract like-minded individuals.

Assemble Members: Reach out to friends, colleagues, or fellow book enthusiasts who might be interested in joining your club. Utilize social media platforms, local community boards, or online forums to connect with potential members who share your literary interests.

Establish Meeting Logistics: Decide on the frequency and duration of your meetings. Will you meet monthly, bi-weekly, or quarterly? Determine the preferred meeting format, whether it’s in-person, virtual, or a combination of both.

Select Reading Materials: As a group, decide on the reading materials. Encourage members to suggest books, and develop a rotating system where each member gets a chance to select the book for a particular month. This ensures diversity in reading choices and keeps everyone engaged.

Plan Engaging Discussions: Prepare discussion questions or prompts related to the book to facilitate meaningful conversations. Encourage members to share their thoughts, opinions, and favorite passages. Explore themes, character development, writing style, and any other aspects that resonate with the group.

Create a Comfortable Environment: Choose a cozy and quiet location for in-person meetings, such as a member’s home or a local coffee shop or bookstore. If meeting virtually, ensure a stable internet connection and use video conferencing platforms that are accessible to all members.

Respect Different Opinions: Encourage open-mindedness and respect for diverse perspectives. Remember that everyone has different reading experiences and interpretations. Embrace the opportunity to learn from others and engage in respectful discussions.

Plan Social Activities: Organize occasional social activities related to books, such as attending author events, visiting literary festivals, or hosting book-themed parties. These events can deepen the bond among club members and create lasting memories.

Joining a book club offers a multitude of benefits, from fostering community and intellectual growth to expanding reading horizons and forming lasting connections. By following the steps outlined above, you can start your own book club and embark on a literary journey with fellow book enthusiasts. So, gather your friends, select an enticing book, and immerse yourself in the joy of shared reading and captivating discussions.

LOVE BOAT

We were cruising in the Exuma Bahamas, on our 42-foot sailboat. Nassau is due east and a little south of Miami. The Exumas are way south of Nassau. It is a fantastic area for cruising. The weather, the people, and the pace of life are perfect. The water is so clear that you can see your anchor in thirty feet of water. It makes for great spear fishing. You do not need a fishing license in the Exumas, but you cannot use a spear gun. They only permit a “Hawaiian Sling” for spearfishing. A Hawaiian Sling is a fiberglass pole about five feet long with a spear point on one end. The other end is connected to a circular rubber tube. You put your hand through the circle and hold the pole. To fire the spear, you pull the pole back a few feet and as you release the pole the rubber tube springs the pole forward, hopefully spearing the fish. Sounds complicated but it works and gives the fish a chance of not being shot. Anyway, it is a great sport and puts fresh fish on the table. We loved the Exumas and were always ready to share the adventure with friends and family.

Our son Brent, his college roommate and both of their girlfriends were invited down to the boat for a week. The plan was for them to fly into Nassau where we would meet them and go cruising. We were in the southern part of the Exumas when it came time to start back to pick them up. We had found a couple of nice cays we planned to return to. When we arrived in Nassau we checked into a marina. Then we took a cab to the airport to rendezvous with our guests. Once back on the boat we assigned them their cabins. They changed clothes and attitudes to Bahama time As Jimmy Buffet said, “there is a change in attitude with a change in latitude”. He was right.

We spent the next day in Nassau. There is plenty to do there. We walked all over, including Paradise Island. This is on the other side of the harbor connected by a seventy-foot-high bridge. They have gambling and entertainment on the island. Of course, there are many places to eat. Each couple decided they wanted some time alone, so we parted and agreed to meet for dinner.

Departing Nassau, we sailed down a series of cays, anchoring and using the dinghy to get ashore. The dinghy

large, approximately two to three feet, and they were a little aggressive because the people had been feeding them. This is not smart because they lose their fear of people.

Another cay where we anchored had a seaplane upside down in the harbor and abandoned structures on the land. We figured it was a drug hangout at one time. We skin dived and dove until we were exhausted. The time flew by, and we prepared to return to Nassau the next day so they could catch their flight.

A cold front passed by that night and the wind shifted to the north. It made for a perfect but rough long day sail. Most of our guests were seasick on this passage. When we reached Nassau, we went to the same marina.

We could not believe it when Brent and Donna asked if they could get married on board the next day. We were flabbergasted and most agreeable. They had made the arrangements beforehand. The papers were signed, and a pastor was set to perform the ceremony. The best man and maid of honor were set. Donna had bought a beautiful dress which matched her birds of paradise flowers. She really looked beautiful as brides do. Everybody put on their best clothes for the occasion. The boat got washed and the flags that my father had made for us years ago were rigged from the top of the mast to the bow and stern. The Seagull II was ready for this very special occasion. All the people in the marina came by to watch the ceremony. It was very special. Oh, we all got a motel for the evening, and the bride and groom had the boat to themselves.

The people in the area started calling our sailboat the LOVE BOAT.

JOYFUL JOURNEY

Chimney Rock State Park

Nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Chimney Rock State Park is a natural wonder that has captivated visitors for generations. Yelp listed Chimney Rock State Park as one of the 50 U.S. State Parks everyone should visit in their lifetime. The park encompasses over 5,700 acres of stunning landscapes, featuring soaring cliffs, ancient forests, and breathtaking views. Its crown jewel, the iconic Chimney Rock, is a 315-foot monolith that dominates the skyline and serves as the park’s namesake.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine into trees.”
- JOHN MUIR

BRIEF HISTORY

Chimney Rock has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Native American tribes, including the Cherokee, inhabited the region for centuries before European settlers arrived. In the late 19th century, Dr. Lucius Morse, a physician from Missouri, purchased the land encompassing Chimney Rock and recognized its potential as a tourist attraction. He constructed the “Old Rock” staircase, which remains in use today, allowing visitors to ascend the rugged terrain to reach the summit.

RECREATION

“Time spent amongst trees is never wasted time.”

- KATRINA MAYER

Chimney Rock State Park offers a wide array of recreational activities that cater to outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Hiking is one of the most popular pastimes, with numerous trails winding through the park’s diverse ecosystems. The Hickory Nut Falls Trail leads visitors to the majestic 404-foot waterfall, which served as a backdrop for the movie “The Last of the Mohicans.” The Outcroppings Trail takes hikers to the top of Chimney Rock, rewarding them with panoramic vistas that stretch for miles. Although the Chimney Rock charges entrance fees it has the most facilities, including riverside areas, interpretive exhibits, and gift shops. The free Rumbling Bald and Eagle Rock accesses provide a more rugged backcountry experience. There is no camping at this state park.

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, rock climbing and rappelling are available with proper permits and equipment. The sheer cliffs

and challenging rock formations provide an exhilarating experience for climbers of all skill levels. Birdwatching is another popular activity, as the park is home to a variety of avian species, including peregrine falcons, which nest on the towering cliffs.

UNIQUE FEATURES

Chimney Rock State Park is renowned for its unique geological features and diverse flora and fauna. The towering Chimney Rock formation, composed of conglomerate rock, is a striking natural landmark that has become an emblem of the park. It offers unparalleled panoramic views of Lake Lure and the surrounding mountains, making it a must-see for visitors.

One of the park’s hidden gems is the Devil’s Head Trail, which leads hikers through a dense forest to an outcrop that remarkably resembles the profile of the devil. This natural curiosity never fails to intrigue and amuse visitors, providing a memorable photo opportunity.

The park is also home to the Rumbling Bald Climbing Access, a popular destination for rock climbers. With over 50-100 boulder problems and many traditional climbing routes, it offers an extensive playground for climbers to test their skills and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

AT THE END OF THE DAY

“Nature is the purest portal to inner-peace.”

As the sun begins to set over Chimney Rock State Park, visitors can wind down and relax in

the picturesque village of Chimney Rock. The village offers charming shops, restaurants, and accommodations, providing a perfect end to a day of exploration. The aroma of home-cooked meals wafts through the air, tempting visitors to savor delicious local cuisine.

For a more leisurely experience, the Chimney Rock Elevator provides a convenient way to reach the top of Chimney Rock, offering stunning views with minimal effort. The elevator ride provides a sense of awe as the landscape unfolds beneath you, showcasing the park’s natural beauty from a unique perspective.

As darkness descends, the starry night sky comes alive, offering a breathtaking celestial display. The park occasionally hosts stargazing events, where visitors can marvel at the wonders of the universe with the guidance of knowledgeable astronomers. Although COVID has stopped these annual events, be sure to check with park officials for more information.

Chimney Rock State Park is a testament to the majesty of nature and the power of conservation. With its rich history, diverse recreational activities, and unique geological features, it continues to captivate and inspire visitors from near and far. A visit to this natural gem promises an unforgettable experience that will leave a lasting impression for years to come.

Chimney Rock State Park is located at 743 Chimney Rock Park Road, Chimney Rock, NC 28720. For hours of operation or other inquiries call the park office at 828-625-1823 or visit their website at chimney.rock@ncparks.gov

WET ‘N WILD WATER FUN

Why not make a splash at your next outdoor cookout? Whether or not you’re able to cool down and splash around at the beach, pool, lake, or any other body of water, you can still have fun cooling off with water in your front or back yard (love that sprinkler and water hose!) or a local park. Mist yourself with a portable misting fan and/or fill spray bottles with water and a few drops of essential oil(s) or flavor extract(s) (optional).

Time to fill up those water balloons and water guns and tag team your workout with a wet ‘n wild game of water tag. Fill up the kiddie pool and bring along some water- and funloving toy friends for kids and kids-at-heart like a rubber ducky (“you’re the one; you make water time so much fun”), pink flamingo and, of course, a mini shark floaty (Jaws soundtrack plays in background).

Bring a cooler filled with ice where the drinks can chill, as you do. Listen to some chillax tracks and your fav summer songs, whether it’s a smaller intimate gathering with a few musician friends or a voluminous venue, complete with a DJ and musical acts and/or other entertainment.

WAVE IF YOU SEE ME, I’LL DO THE SAME

Of all the charming aspects of lake life, one of my favorites is that everyone waves to each other all the time. It’s normal and expected to see a lot of waving people whenever you go out on a boat. It’s like everyone is saying, “Hey, I’m on a boat too! Hello!” Everyone out there on a boat is having a good time. And if not, they’re waving to make sure you see them and don’t run into each other.

The waving traditions here that surprised me are all off the lake. Most people nearby all wave to each other whenever they see someone on our road. My friend Nate came down from Wisconsin for a visit just after we moved in and he noticed too, “It’s so nice here, everyone waves to each other on your street.”

I live on one long street that runs the length of a peninsula, so the only people who tend to come down here are the local residents, a few delivery people, and the lawn maintenance crews. You ride your bike or walk up and down the street enough times, you start to recognize people, or at least their cars.

The people you see the most are the two mail ladies, and they have their waves on lock down. One gives a big smile and a wave no matter

how many times you ride your bike past her on the road, and the other, who’s driving her car from the passenger seat so she can reach the mailboxes, gives you a friendly wave without ever taking her hand off the wheel.

The biggest mutual waves on the road tend to happen when two people are doing the same thing. One guy on a bike passes another and they’re always friendly. It’s this whole, “Hey look at us, we’re in this together!” vibe happening. The same can be said for dog walkers taking their pups out in the morning, the late afternoon joggers, and few people who live nearby and seem to have recently gotten really into Rollerblading. The people mowing their lawns or the road shoulders with their zero turn mowers can’t wave because they need to keep both hands on the controls, so they nod as you pass by.

The only people who don’t wave are the occasional construction workers who must have come in from out of state and the guy who lives at the end of my road and drives a sports car. I’m actually glad that guy keeps both of his hands on the wheel since he’s always speeding.
