June is here… which means summertime—my absolute favorite season! There’s just something about being near the water, soaking up the sunshine, and getting a healthy dose of vitamin D that instantly boosts my mood (almost as much as a good workout!). I love how summer seems to give us permission to slow down a bit. We take a little more time off work, spend longer evenings outside, and make space for the simple joys—like cookouts with friends, weekend getaways, and sunset walks.

As I’m writing this, I just picked up our marriage license, and I can barely contain my excitement! Gavin and I are just a couple of weeks away from getting married, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I can’t wait to share some wedding moments with you in our next issue. (And let’s be honest—you’ll probably catch a few sneak peeks on our @forsythmags social media before then!)

Keeping It Real

YOU’RE NEVER FORGOTTEN, NEVER FORSAKEN!

Life has a way of sucker-punching us, doesn’t it? The hardest part is when the punches just keep coming… from every direction…before we can even catch our breath. After a while, it seems like a pile-on, and “overwhelmed” is all we feel!

Then, the whispering in our ears gets LOUD, insisting that nobody understands and nobody cares. (I hear you.)

One of the greatest leaders of all time passed the torch to a new generation. But, Joshua didn’t think he could carry on without his iconic mentor. Talk about feeling overwhelmed! Moses had passed; Joshua was on deck! Batter up!

God knew Joshua was shaking in his boots. The whisperings got boisterous in his head, telling him all the reasons this could never work. His mind rehearsed all the reasons he could never measure up. (Sound familiar?!)

God, in His Goodness, spoke very emphatically to Joshua, saying, “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.” (Joshua 1:5 NKJV)

THAT’S quite the promise! NO MAN can take you out? For ALL your days? Just as the Lord stood with the Pioneer, He’ll stand with you…not going anywhere… by your side all the way?! WOW!

It’s as if God is shooting courage into the spine of this new leader who wonders if he’s got what it takes. But, this is NOT just some pep talk…

If God says so, it ALWAYS IS so!

The Everlasting Father never gives us false hope! God’s Promises over your life are NOT inevitable, but they are surely possible!

The Lover of our soul constantly reveals what can happen when we walk where He leads. Y’all! NO ONE could stand against Joshua all the days of his life! FOR REAL!

God then says to Joshua what He says more than 100 times in Scripture: “I will not leave you or forsake you.” But, aren’t “leave” and “forsake” kind of the same thing? Actually, they’re not.

When someone “leaves” you, they PHYSICALLY walk away. Maybe your heart knows that pain. My daddy

left my mama with four small children. As a little girl, that “leaving” changed the whole trajectory of my life. EVERY PART!

God lovingly healed my devastated and confused heart. Without a mending only the Healer can bring, the sting of rejection lingers and even intensifies, doesn’t it?

However, “forsaking” describes someone EMOTIONALLY checking out of the relationship. Their heart turns away and their feelings flatline, even while they remain in close proximity to you. (Oh, the ache!)

Some of you know EXACTLY what it’s like to live with someone who has forsaken you. They emotionally detach from the relationship even as you continue to co-exist, sometimes in the same house.

God knows that wound that keeps bleeding. (He can heal it, too! I promise He can!)

Friend, God is like NOthing or NOone else in our living! He’s completely OTHER! He cannot leave us. He will not forsake us. Why? Because He said so, so the prospect is utterly impossible!

His Heart toward you sticks it out, even as we lose our stickability toward Him. Sometimes we lose our way. Our devotion wanes. But His doesn’t. As we take Him at His Word and follow where He leads, He becomes our front-guard, rear-guard and our wrap-around shield. He leads us into territories entirely too big for us but never too big for HIM!

No matter what you’re facing or how stuck you feel, God is sticking it out with you. He’s not checking out emotionally, and He’s surely not packing His bags! When you feel forsaken or left behind, the One who adores you and calls you His own just keeps staying the course, through it all!

Overcoming the Tyranny of Shoulds SLOW DOWN, GIRL!

Many of us live in a world of “How fast can you go?”

We equate faster with better because it means that we can do more, more, more. That is often true, but oh, there are tradeoffs. When “fast” becomes our tip of the tongue mantra and our go-to mode, the experiences that can and should be enjoyable and comforting become mere chores to check off that seemingly self-propagating list:

The thrown together, gobbled down meal fails to satisfy. The benefits of that abbreviated yoga barely suffice. The cut-short evening walk stresses instead of decompresses. The “nice” at-home facial, laid on “slap-dash” fails to deliver.

You know what I mean. Substitute these examples with your own, and you begin to see how go, go, go and fast, fast, fast may be depleting your joy.

Beyond specific activities, we may also rush through each day as if collapsing in bed and starting over to do all that and more the next day is the point. I think of it as the “Tyranny of Shoulds” which is exemplified by the proverbial “To Do” list, a race with time to complete, to check off, to finish, to say “I did it.”

When I look at this mindset rationally, I see how utterly limiting it is. It pains me to think about how many decades I’ve lived this way, to see that, while things get done, so much of the richness of my lived experience is squandered.

I’ve decided that I don’t want to do this anymore. I want to:

• have a healthier relationship with time and my to do list.

• see what my breakneck speed has prohibited me from noticing.

• cultivate a more engaged way of living each day.

I’ve had glimpses of what this is like. When I have allowed myself to relax into the moments and the chores, and the to-dos of the day, all kinds of unexpected things happen – observations, encounters, conversations and, yes, insights. Many insights. Whether you’re steeped in a career, managing motherhood or navigating the very different challenges of aging, slowing down may be key to adding more richness to your life. Here’s what I’m doing to help myself do so:

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR SLOWING DOWN

Notice when your “go fast” mode is turned on.

You can’t change a behavior until you recognize it. Really listen to your self-talk. Do you tell yourself to rush and keep pushing, even when it’s not necessary? Don’t be a mean girl to yourself!

Challenge your self-imposed “shoulds.”

I am the queen of this one! You can count on me to exhaustively list every single chore, task, call or action I “should” address at any moment of the day – or night! It’s a compulsive habit I developed in grade school for heaven’s sake. So, I just went for my second walk of the day and, while listening to my autopilot self-talk, decided that I would give myself more “me time” tomorrow. I’ll do that by removing three “shoulds” from my mental list. Honestly, the vacuuming can wait!

Remind yourself that you control the On, Pause and Off switch.

You, you, you! After all, you made up this “Tyranny of Shoulds” in the first place. There are indeed times when going fast and checking off certain things really does matter, but there are many others that just don’t.

Practice slowing down in the moment.

Okay, so you could have flicked the Off switch, or at least hit Pause, but you didn’t. Once you recognize that, take a breath and slow down. Your go, go, go, fast, fast, fast is a wellpracticed behavior. So, “take it slow.” The more you practice it, the better you will get, and the more you will enjoy the precious moments and minutes that make up a life: yours!

Mary Lea Dominick is no stranger to beauty. Not only has she been on stage in nearly 100 productions, she also has more than 25 years of behind-the-scenes experience in wigs and makeup. Her love for theatre spills over into her work as a stylist, where her chair is a stage and her clients are the stars of the show.

WHAT

DREW YOU TO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?

As a child of the 80s, I grew up using hot rollers and curling irons. Even then, I was a perfectionist. I styled my hair every day and refused to walk out the door for school without every hair being in place.

I graduated from UNCSA with a Bachelor of Music in Opera Performance. By the time I graduated, I knew I didn’t want to move to NYC to be a starving artist, so I ended up in the IT industry. I started as a recruiter and worked my way up to VP of Consulting.

Becoming a stylist never crossed my mind until a huge change in my life led me to really think about what I wanted to do going forward. A friend of mine (now my husband!), suggested cosmetology school because of my background in theatre hair and makeup. That’s when I had a lightbulb moment. Hair and makeup had always been something I was good at and enjoyed. Amber Woodall, who was my stylist at the time, also encouraged me to go for it. So I enrolled, and the rest is history.

Since I’ve been a stylist, I’ve become a Goldwell certified Master Colorist, am certified in easihair pro tape-in extensions, and in Revive toppers. I also just recently completed Oribe’s Journey to Mastery Essential Curls class. I’m big on continuing education and continually elevating my craft.

HOW DO YOU PERSONALIZE SERVICES FOR EACH CLIENT?

The first and most important step is simple: I listen! I learn about the client’s lifestyle, styling preferences, what they like or dislike about their current style, and what makes them feel confident and beautiful. By listening, I can give them a style that looks and feels amazing, and that also fits their daily routine.

WHAT’S YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERVICE?

I know a lot of stylists pick color, which I do love, but my absolute favorite service is haircutting. For me, cutting is like creating a sculpture—a beautiful, living piece of art! Regardless of the service, I love crafting different styles that fit my client’s face shape and personality.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR AT-HOME HAIR CARE?

Your hair is an investment in yourself. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not using professional hair care products and tools. They make a huge difference in hair health and styling outcomes at home. Never style with heat tools without heat protection. I also recommend using a shower head water filter. They make a noticeable difference in your hair and skin.

OUTSIDE OF HAIR AND THEATRE, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?

I love fine dining—multiple courses and cocktails! I also enjoy reading, bowling, gourmet cooking and baking, and being active. My favorite, though, is curling up on the sofa at home with my husband and our three feline children while binging Netflix.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE YOUR CURRENT AND POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW?

I’m passionate about cars and driving. I refuse to own a car if it doesn’t have lots of horsepower and a manual transmission.

Brown Sugar Carrot Cake Latte

This Brown Sugar Carrot Cake Latte with a Maple-Cinnamon Cold Foam is a fun spring ice latte recipe that takes less than 20 minutes to fully make!

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

For the Brown Sugar Carrot Cake Syrup:

2 large carrots

½ cup brown sugar

2 cups water

¾ tsp. ground cinnamon

¼ tsp. pumpkin spice

1” fresh ginger grated

Zest of one orange

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Brown Sugar Carrot Cake Syrup:

For the Cinnamon Maple Cold Foam:

¼ cup half & half

2 tsp. maple syrup

¼ tsp. ground cinnamon

For the Latte:

½ cup whole milk

2 shots espresso

1. Chop the carrots into tiny pieces, then add to a saucepan with the water. Bring the water to a boil over medium high heat, then reduce and add the brown sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved and carrots are mostly fork tender, about 5-10 minutes.

2. Transfer all ingredients to a high speed blender. Pulse until smooth.

3. Strain the mixture, then stir in the ground cinnamon, pumpkin spice, orange zest and grated ginger.

4. Store in a glass container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days.

For the Cinnamon Maple Cold Foam:

1. Add all ingredients in a small bowl. Use a hand held milk frother to whisk until thick and foamy.

To Assemble the Latte:

1. Fill a glass with ice. Add 1-2 tablespoons of the Brown Sugar Carrot Cake Syrup, then the whole milk, then the espresso and lastly top with the cold foam.

2. Dust with ground cinnamon to enjoy!

“Our team members are very emotionally invested and rooted in these communities,” she explains. “Serious illness, death and dying is a space in life that’s unique, and it’s important that we ‘live’ inside that space with our patients. It’s an honor and a tenderness that doesn’t exist in other medical care.”

Kristie also shares having two in-patient homes is a real advantage.

The Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home, located in Dobson, NC, features a lovely view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, set amid peaceful farmland. It has served residents of Surry County and surrounding areas since 2009. This 22,000-square-foot residence features 20 patient suites with outdoor patios.

Also situated in the most peaceful surroundings, The SECU Hospice Care Center in Yadkinville opened in August of 2017, with a 10,000-square-foot facility featuring six patient suites with outdoor patios.

Chief Clinical Operations Officer Jenna Campbell knows that, for those who work in the field, Hospice care is really a personal calling.

“I discovered the process when my grandfather needed Hospice care,” she shares. “As clinicians, we have the opportunity to guide individuals and explore all options with them. Education is so important because many families don’t realize the number of options they do have. We are ‘on’ 24/7, and I believe that level of provider support is what sets us apart.”

Mountain Valley focuses on a Holistic Care Plan, addressing both a patient’s physical and emotional needs with a strong in-home support system that consists of physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, chaplains, counselors and volunteers. Hospice care can

take on many forms, and the definition of “home” can vary – from a patient’s actual residence to a nursing facility or even a hotel.

As Kristie points out, “Home is where we meet them.”

While Hospice care is geared towards comfort for patients with a life expectancy of six months or less, those in palliative care may still be receiving treatment but likely have a prognosis of 24 months or less. In addition to cancer, Mountain Valley’s Serious Illness Specialists can also cover patients with heart or lung disease, dementia, neuro-muscular diseases like Parkinson’s or ALS, and kidney failure.

Each patient who is referred to Mountain Valley is carefully screened to ensure appropriate support can be offered. If their services are not a fit, the staff does its best to make recommendations for alternate support that may be available. Some instances that might qualify for serious illness specialists are patients experiencing uncontrolled symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, constipation, anxiety or agitation, those experiencing frequent emergency department visits or hospital admissions for serious illnesses and wish to minimize trips to the ER, or patients with advanced illnesses who could qualify for Hospice, but who aren’t psychologically ready for that level of service.

The scope of services offered by Mountain Valley allows patients to spend more quality time with those they love, enjoying the things that are most important to them. With the ultimate goal of caring for the entire family – not simply a set of medical symptoms – they also offer Love’s PEAK, a specialized program that provides empathy and assurance for kids up to age 21.

For more than 30 years, Child Care Resource Center has been the Winston-Salem community’s expert resource and referral organization –while serving a total of nine Northwest North Carolina counties including Alleghany, Ashe, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin.

Caitlin Baumberger | Illustrator & Designer

This month’s featured artist, Caitlin Baumber, is the illustrator and designer behind Happy Tines, where she brings joy filled, whimsical artwork to life through hand-drawn illustrations and lettering. Caitlin is passionate about partnering with incredible brands and clients nationwide to create designs that brighten everyday moments.

How would you describe your work?

I’m an illustrator and surface pattern designer based in Apex, North Carolina. I’m the owner of Happy Tines, where my mission is to create artwork that brings a little extra joy and happiness into everyday life. Through whimsical hand-drawn illustrations, playful hand-lettering details and cheerful color palettes, I aim to design pieces that make people smile. Whether it’s a custom illustrated map, a floral pattern or a logo design, I believe everyone deserves small moments of happiness that brighten their day.

What was your journey to developing your artistic skills like?

After graduating from Meredith College with a BA in graphic design, I began my career working as a graphic designer in the corporate world. While I was grateful for the experience, I found myself longing for a more hands-on creative outlet. That led me to sign up for a traditional calligraphy class – and I was instantly hooked! In 2017, I launched Happy Tines, focusing on custom wedding invitations and illustrated wedding maps, often incorporating calligraphy into my illustrations using pen and ink. It was a labor of love! A few years later, I invested in an iPad Pro and it truly transformed my workflow. Now, I create all of my illustrations digitally using Procreate and an Apple Pencil, perfectly blending efficiency and creativity.

How have you grown, personally, as an artist?

One of the biggest areas of growth for me has definitely been my mindset. At first, I held myself back a lot – worried about judgment, someone copying my work and imposter syndrome. But, over time, I’ve realized that just showing up and sharing my work opens doors to so many awesome connections, encouragement and opportunities. The positive feedback has really shown me that the reward is so much bigger than any of the fear.

What is your secret for carving out time to truly be creative?

Finding the balance between client work and creating just for fun has always been a bit of a challenge for me – but I’ve realized how important it really is. It’s easy to push personal projects to the back burner, but that playful, no-pressure creativity is often where my best ideas come from. In fact, most of my clients refer to pieces I created simply for fun as their project inspiration! It just goes to show how important it is to create and share the art that lights you up.

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?

One of my favorite pieces is an illustration of Downtown Apex that I created shortly after my husband and I moved here. I was instantly smitten with the smalltown charm of our downtown – it felt like something out of a Hallmark movie. I wanted to capture that feeling in a cheerful, illustrated print. I partnered with a local shop, Stylish Living, where you can find the artwork on prints and coffee mugs. It makes me so happy to offer something special for the community – something that feels personal, giftable and uniquely Apex.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

This year I started offering logo and brand design, and I’m loving it! It’s such a joy to help bring businesses to life through playful logos, color palettes, illustrated icons, and more.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?

Never stop learning and stay curious! Skillshare is an amazing resource for taking online classes and expanding your skills in all sorts of creative areas. And, don’t be afraid to share your artwork! The more you put yourself out there, the more opportunities and connections you’ll make.

Rosa Johnson

Each month, this People of Prominence series features a local figure who has made a mark of one sort or another.

It was initially begun as a labor of love to spotlight oftentimes unsung people who deserved to be brought to our collective attention.

For this month’s edition of People of Prominence, I have decided to break the proverbial fourth wall to present a first-person perspective.

This month, I present Rosa Johnson. Instead of fleshing out a person’s fascinating journey through a series of questions and answers, this time I wanted to make the article more personal. This particular interview left me a bit unhinged and inspired.

I sat with Rosa in the living room of her comforting modest apartment north of Winston-Salem. When you walk in, you are immediately struck by the pastiche of art and artifacts everywhere. Her

life, there in living color, gave me pause with my mouth agape and a slow shake of my head that honored the surroundings. I immediately knew I was in the presence of someone mystical, philosophical and artistically potent.

Rosa perched upon a footstool as I sat upon her small couch. She looked up with dark, mesmerizing eyes. They are eyes that house memories like a jar of fireflies. During our conversation, she would often place both of her hands against those eyes as if to contain those fireflies and keep them from escaping. I got the sense that reminiscing on her rich life surprises and astonishes her.

Rosa Johnson has spent her 81 years among us as the “Queen Mother of Hair Braids” for Stevie Wonder and so many others. She cultivated a talent for braiding at a time when African Americans in our country turned to this ornate tradition.

Rosa, while living in California and operating a salon, put out the word that if anyone would alert Stevie Wonder to her talent for hair braids, she would braid his hair for free.

And, like so many occasions in her life, the universe manifested her desire and destiny. She met Stevie and spent 10 years upon the whirlwind wake of his global tours all the while creating elaborate, ornate braids for his signature look.

As if that connection weren’t enough, Rosa is also the niece of the late Maya Angelou who was a preeminent author and spiritual activist for our nation.

“Auntie [Maya] saved my life a few times. I remember once when I had accepted an invitation to date a man (continued on page 40)

I knew was not good for me and who would have definitely led me into a darkened life. As I was preparing to go on this date, Auntie Maya sent a limo and I was extended a trip, just for me, to Big Sur in Northern California. I took her up on this trip instead of going with this man. Auntie knew nothing about the man I was about to date, but once again, the universe via Auntie paved my way to a brighter destination.”

During her 50s, Rosa experienced heartbreak upon the death of her only son. But, true to fashion, God swept up the debris of tragedy and spoke to Rosa through Auntie Maya who implored Rosa to come here to North Carolina, heal her broken heart and attend Salem College. And, at a time later in life when many would have listlessly rolled over and succumbed to adversity, Rosa listened to her wizened aunt who told her she was deserving of higher education. Maya cheered her on to graduation from college with Oprah Winfrey giving that year’s commencement speech. And, thus began with Oprah another pivotal famous friendship.

The famous names in her life’s rolodex have painted a tapestry of anecdotes that will astound any listener.

“I remember often Stevie [Wonder] would be running late…. I was with Nina Simone in the airport that time…Red Foxx once told me…then I lived in the former home of Frank Lloyd Wright…if

you listen to the song ‘Happy Birthday’ by Stevie Wonder, you can hear me on the background vocals….”

The stories have me, once again, with my mouth halfway open and shaking my head in reverence. She doesn’t tell these stories in an audacious bragging tone; they are instead humble brushstrokes of an artist exposing the canvas of her remarkable life as a resilient mother, an activist, a strong fearless woman, a flawed and flawless human.

Let us not forget that the name of Rosa’s photographic exhibit in 2023 was “Straw into Gold.” Rosa explains it as having been an extensive photographic account of her life and artistry. She proudly states that it detailed her life that “began as straw and could have stayed as straw but became gold…or actually platinum now at my age.”

I readily imagine God standing at the assembly line of creation of Ms. Rosa and being heard to say, “Watch this. I am going to mold someone who I will inundate with experiences, encounters, creativity and a love so profound that she cannot help but live a full, expressive life. She may find herself on a hard-scrabble path but will, ultimately, make such an impression upon others that she cannot be ignored or defeated.”

Rosa tells me of a recent story detailing the chair yoga class she enjoys taking. She tells me about who sits on either side of her at each class. A younger man is to her right with whom she bonds and encourages and that he dances with her from a seated position. The woman to her left has always been a friendly acquaintance who recently presented her with a beautiful tapestry she had bought depicting Mother Mary. Rosa has been struck by the unassuming kindness of this woman and perhaps doesn’t realize that people stand in awe of her and are all too happy to give her their attention and their gifts just as she

has done for others all her life.

I ultimately concluded our interview with, “Ms. Rosa, what does the world need more of?”

Without hesitation, she answered, “Unconditional love.”

And then, “Ms. Rosa, what does the world need less of?”

Again, without missing a beat, she said, “Fear. So many people are afraid. So many are scared and uncertain. They need…love.”

After the interview with Rosa, I texted my wife to say, “someday you must meet this woman.” It was as if I had been given an unexpected, unforgettable and unforeseen surprise that I wanted to share with my beloved.

I conveyed my impressions of the time I spent with Rosa to others at my workplace. I watched as people would listen to my recounting of her life and her experiences, and they all had the same look on their face with their own mouth dropped open and a slow shake of the head. They weren’t there with Rosa and me at the interview, but they could feel the warm color of Rosa’s landscape.

I have never been more grateful for the opportunity to be reminded that everyone has a story. Sometimes those stories are simple, and sometimes complex, but most assuredly, always a blessing.

Trying New Things: Pickleball

The weather is warmer, the sun is setting later and the pickleball courts are full! This month, for Trying New Things, we are going to discuss what may be the biggest and fastest growing sport. I started playing pickleball last summer. Although this isn’t exactly as new as the activities I’ve previously written about, hopefully my experience can help you understand the game and decide if you’re ready to join the masses and give it a shot.

WHAT IS IT?

Although the pickleball craze has been recent, it has actually been around since the 1960s. I actually remember playing pickleball for the first time in high school. I had an eccentric PE teacher who swore it would be the next big thing. He was a little hard to take seriously since he was the same teacher who told us he was a pirate – but, hey, in hindsight, he was right!

WHAT DO YOU DO?

Pickleball is typically played one-on-one or in teams of two on a court that’s 44 feet long and 20 feet wide, with a waist-high net in the middle. Using paddles (usually made of wood or plastic), players hit a plastic ball back and forth across the net. A rally continues until someone hits the ball out of bounds or lets it bounce twice. Simple enough, right? Well, here is where it gets a little tricky. There is a seven-foot deep zone on each side of the net known as the “kitchen.” Players can’t hit the ball while standing in the kitchen, otherwise they lose the point. This rule prevents someone from going right up to the net and spiking the ball at opponents. Another component that may cause some initial confusion is the serving and scoring. Serves are hit diagonally across the court and, before each serve, the server calls out the score and who is serving (either server one or two). In a doubles pickleball match, the score could read “3-2-1”: 3 is the score of the serving team, 2 is the score of the opponent and 1 signifies that it is the first server’s turn. You can only score points when your team is serving, and the games are to 11 points, win by two. Although this crash course on pickleball may sound technical, it is an easy game to catch on to. And even if you don’t want to follow the rules exactly, just hitting the ball around can be a lot of fun.

INSIGHTS & IMPRESSION

One thing I really like about pickleball, and why I think it caught on so quickly for so many people is that it is beginner friendly. The initial skills required to be able to rally is something that will take a day or two. On top of that, pickleball is social, outdoors and for all ages. If you’re interested in getting more competitive with pickleball, there are a lot of people that are really good

at the public courts every time I have gone. If you haven’t watched someone who’s really good at pickleball, it’s pretty unbelievable how precise they are compared to a casual player.

DID I FEEL LIKE I WAS WORKING OUT?

Something I really appreciate about playing a game is that I don’t realize that I’m working out. Running after a ball is a better experience than going on a jog for me, even if I exert the same amount of energy. There are limitations with a sport, however. You need at least one other person, equipment, a court and good weather to be able to play. Since pickleball is so popular right now, I’ve had to wait for a court to open up even when I am ready to play. With so many factors, sometimes it can be a chore to get everything together. Even with some necessary preparation, I encourage you to give pickleball a try! I’ll reiterate that it does not require much skill to start with, so it is a great social outdoor activity for the summer.

In Year Five of Daring to Make it Happen, Darris Perkins is Creating Amazing Spaces

To say that Darris Perkins always welcomes a good challenge might be a serious understatement!

Starting her own business in a typically male dominated industry is chapter one of her story, but the creative journey is far from over. After all, how rare is it to meet someone who can truly say they would be “honored and thrilled” to be doing the same job for the rest of their life? Now you know Darris!

While facing a post-pandemic job layoff in 2020, she filled her days with completing a few fun updates at her own home – and dabbled with projects for friends and family. Documenting these creative endeavors on social media sparked others to share her accomplishments, and her new business – Dare to Design – was born!

On her own, she is literally a full service interior design firm, and yes, you’ll see a picture of her with a saw in hand because, yes, she is the one doing the work.

“It’s still rare to be a woman in this industry – and that has been the hardest uphill battle,” shares Darris. That includes convincing doubters she is capable of not only the design concept, but of making it happen, as well.

“They think I might be the designer, sure, but couldn’t possibly have completed all that work by myself!” she adds. “Even male contractors I work with are still surprised.”

While Darris tells us she wouldn’t have believed in a million years that her “hobby” could become a longterm achievement, she’s inspired on a daily basis by how far she has come.

“Now that I’m thoroughly rooted in it – I can totally see myself retiring while doing exactly this! My clients also have really cool visions – so that pushes me creatively.”

Darris is also dedicated to keeping the renovation process as relaxing as possible for clients – not always the case with potentially stressful home projects. Those fortunate clients – mostly in the Triad area, but a few in Charlotte and Raleigh – tend to see her as a friend who happens to have the magic touch that keeps them calm and collected throughout their installation.

Naturally, some meaningful words of wisdom emerge as Darris continues to succeed in a typically male work arena – wisdom she hopes other female entrepreneurs will take to heart and pass along!

“Don’t be scared to show up and try new things! Even if I’m asked to do something I haven’t done before, for some crazy reason I still say ‘yes!’” she shares. “When I get anxious, I still trust myself and know I’m in the right place. It’s the thrill of being in that space right before accomplishing something really incredible – I know I’m stubborn, and I’m going to figure it out.”

Taking the leap of faith to start a small business was a big step for the girl who always struggled with “trusting her gut” – but Darris says

overcoming that fear has made her feel even more comfortable in the role.

An avid follower of design details to tempt her clients, she tells us she’s currently seeing requests for lots of arches especially in shelves and doorways.

“I’m also eyeing a lot of earthy, organic tones and interesting textures – which I am all about – and also color-drenching (floorto-ceiling in all one shade)!”

What’s her current favorite – and decidedly most fun – home project? Stylish, built-in doggie crates, of course!

“I’ve always tried to maintain a certain aesthetic in our home but then realized upstairs we had these ugly metal dog

crates for our pitbull and bulldog. I’ve also brainstormed unique options for doggie doors with clients or a new doggie hideaway right under the stairs!” she adds.

While truly building the business of her dreams, Darris is also an encourager, happy to nudge other entrepreneurs to get out of their own way – and give their dreams a shot.

“When women want to start a business, imposter syndrome often sneaks in,” she explains. “It’s normal to feel insecure, but don’t let that get in your way. I will always be grateful to that first client who took a chance on me.”

From those adorable doggie crates to fireplaces, bookshelves, kitchen and bathroom updates, unique cosmetic touches, statement ceilings and, lately, a renewed interest in the unexpected whimsy of wallpaper – the possibilities are endless.

Five years in, Darris will tell you putting that last knob on a kitchen cabinet and glimpsing a smile on the client’s face just never, ever gets old!

3 Steps to Leveraging Live Events to Generate Leads

After nearly a decade coaching creative entrepreneurs, I’ve learned that what business owners crave most isn’t more sales or better systems – it’s connection.

Connection to other business owners who get it, connection to customers who value what we do and, more than anything, connection to resources that can get us both!

THERE IS POWER GOING OFFLINE

While social media tends to be one of the first marketing tools we think of to connect our business to the world, it’s not the only way. In fact, some of the most powerful connections I’ve ever made (ones that led to dream clients and big sales) happened offline, in real life, at events.

The truth is that your next client isn’t scrolling Instagram; they are in the rooms you need to be in!

Want a powerful lead generator? Here are three action steps to start showing up at live events with intention and strategy.

1. OWN YOUR OFFER & YOUR ASK

If you can’t confidently articulate what you do and who you help, it’s hard for others to refer or work with you.

What do you have to offer right now? Who do you feel called to work with? Can I speak about what I do concisely to people?

You want to get as specific as you can when meeting ideal clients. Don’t be afraid to ask people if they know the kinds of connections, projects or opportunities you’re looking for and be open to being a resource for them as well.

2. BE IN THE RIGHT ROOMS

Let me be clear – not all events are created equal! You’re a business owner who wears a lot of hats, so you don’t have time to waste! Your goal is to show up in rooms where your ideal clients or referral partners are. Whether as a host, educator, attendee or sponsor, hold onto your “yes” until you know if it checks the boxes that matter!

Who do I want to work with? What types of events do they attend? What conversations are happening there?

Sometimes, this means getting out of your comfort zone and into a room that challenges you. Other times, it means creating the room yourself; host a brunch for business owners, start a coffee meetup, build your own table and invite others!

3. BORROW A STAGE OR FIND A MIC

Visibility builds credibility! The goal is to get more eyes on your business while building trust and a reputation of value. You don’t have to throw a huge conference or speak in front of hundreds of people to lead with authority, but you do need to get your message out there.

Can you pitch to speak on a local panel for my industry?

Offer a free workshop at your coworking space?

Attend an aligned pop-up or speed networking event?

Small events can give you BIG results. Don’t get caught up in the “Instagram

worthy” events but ones of real substance and impact that you know you are going to be able to captivate the right attention and create real relationships that can benefit your business.

LET CONNECTION BE YOUR COMPASS

It’s not about being the loudest in the room, it’s about being the most intentional. Live events can be lead-generating machines when you know how to use them. Keep connection at the center of every event you attend, allowing it to guide your strategy, conversations and conversions!

Summer is here! The sun is out, the air is warm, the big green trees are just waiting to provide shade...everything is vibrant and bright, and all you want to do is get outside and enjoy it. If you’re a senior, you may have to think carefully about how to enjoy these special summer months. But, no matter what your level of activity, here are some ideas that include something for everyone.

EATING OUTDOORS

Nothing says summertime like a picnic. Pack up a basket or cooler of your favorite sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Don’t forget a lovely blanket to sit on...and head to a charming outdoor spot. Tanglewood Park or Salem Lake are two nearby venues you may want to try. Or, for seniors who may not be as mobile, have a lovely picnic on the back patio or in the yard. Find a spot under a shady tree, and just relax with food, family and lovable furry friends. Make it a day to remember!

SCENIC DRIVES

A scenic drive can be a great way to enjoy the beauty of summer. Whether it’s a drive through the countryside, through a favorite park or along the coast, it’s a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Plan a route that has plenty of places to stop...like maybe a mom n’ pop vegetable stand or a special place to get ice cream. Then, just enjoy the view. You might want to bring along some of your favorite snacks and drinks, and make sure you have a phone and charger in case you need a GPS!

GARDENING

Here’s a great activity for any senior who loves the sun and doesn’t mind getting a little dirty. Whether you’re interested in growing flowers,

fruits and vegetables, herbs or all of the above, this is the season to do it. If you’re a beginner (or even if you’ve been gardening your whole life), you might want to check out the Forsyth County Center through the NC Cooperative Extension as they offer gardening classes and other opportunities to get involved with gardening projects. If you’re looking for a great local nursery, check out House of Plants at 507 Harvey Street in Winston-Salem. Their knowledge of plants is unbeatable. Gardening has physical and mental health benefits that help your body and mind. You’ll also get a healthy dose of Vitamin D which boosts the immune system and also lowers blood pressure. Take this opportunity to wear a fabulous gardening hat to protect your face from the sun’s rays and keep you a bit cooler!

BIRD WATCHING

Bird watching is a peaceful and engaging activity that allows seniors to connect with nature. All it requires is a pair of binoculars and a field guide to identify local bird species. Bird watching can be enjoyed from a backyard, a local park or a nature preserve. You might even work a nice picnic lunch into the day. Also, consider setting up bird feeders in the yard to attract birds closer to home.

SWIMMING

Swimming and water aerobics are excellent low impact activities that are gentle on the joints while providing a full body workout. Many community centers, the YMCA and other senior facilities offer water exercise classes specifically designed for seniors. To prevent slips and falls, it’s a good idea to wear water shoes.

WALKING

Walking is a simple and healthy pastime for seniors. It improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and boosts your mood. This free outdoor activity is a great way to appreciate nature. You can go for a walk by yourself for a peaceful moment, or you can get a group of friends to go together and talk about everything under the sun as you go for a leisurely stroll. For safe walking, wear comfortable, supportive shoes, stay hydrated and apply sunscreen. There are wonderful walking paths in our area at parks like Tanglewood, but you may also find it pleasant just to walk around your neighborhood.

PLAY OUTDOOR GAMES

One of the most fun outdoor activities for seniors is playing lawn games. You may have played some of these games when you were a kid, but there are plenty of new lawn games to learn as well. Get a group of friends together for an afternoon of friendly competition.

Bean bag toss, bocce ball, horseshoes and croquet are perfect for seniors as they are low impact and easy to learn. Play on a flat, grassy area to reduce the risk of falls. Also, use brightly colored equipment for better visibility.

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors and engage in activities that can enhance the quality of life for seniors. Staying active and socially engaged is important for mental and physical health, and the warm weather provides ample opportunities to do just that.

More Than a Race :

In an electrifying performance, Kenyan runner John Korir claimed victory at the 2025 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:04:45, overcoming an early stumble at the start line to surge ahead in the final miles. His win marks not only a personal triumph, but also a historic milestone—John and his brother, Wesley Korir, are now the first siblings to have both won the prestigious race.

But for the Korir family, the Boston Marathon has always represented more than just athletic achievement. Like Wesley before him, John plans to use his win as a platform to give back. He has pledged a portion of his winnings to the Transcend Talent Academy, a high-performance training and education center in Kenya dedicated to helping young athletes rise from poverty through sport and education.

Transcend is a project deeply rooted in family and partnership. The school was co-founded in 2022 by Wesley Korir and Winston-Salem local business owners Emily and Keith Davis, who share a vision for ending generational poverty in Kenya. The Davises, owners of Fleet Feet Winston-Salem and Clemmons, joined forces with Wesley to build the school in western Kenya with the goal of giving gifted but under-resourced youth access to elite training, mentorship, and academic opportunity.

If you read last month’s column, you’ll recall that I was going through a bit of a “funk” (to put it lightly) and had found myself in a repetitive cycle of self sabotage in the dating game yet again.

This month, I am turning 33, and I am beginning to feel lightyears behind my cohorts. Most of my friends from high school or college have far surpassed me in terms of milestones. Whether they’re wrapped up in marriages, multiple children, multiple homes or cars, I can guarantee none of them have time to sit around and cry over a man who chooses partying over his partner and lies as easily as he breathes.

I’ll admit, I feel silly talking to anyone about my dating struggles at this point. Not only are my friends and family sick of my datinginduced depressive episodes, but they’re also too busy solving some

of life’s most important problems (like parenting, excelling in careers or tending to sick family members) to even relate to my seemingly immature and cyclical dilemmas. Calling my busy best friend Matt to ruminate about why someone did or didn’t call me back for the 300th time feels a bit inconsiderate when he has two children, a wife and a job to maintain. Needless to say, I’m beginning to feel the pressure to catch up with everyone else, which leads to many nights of frustration, anxiety and tears because I’m just not there yet and I don’t know how to get there or why things aren’t happening for me like they seem to be happening for others. Adulthood can be lonely as a single, introverted person, and it only seems to get lonelier with each year that passes and you and your friends drift in different directions. When speaking with your therapist for an hour is the highlight of your week, and when you begin singing Broadway musical songs to your cat in

the evenings, it might be time to make changes.

To avoid sounding ungrateful, I know I am fortunate to have even a small apartment to live in, a wonderful cat to keep me company and my health. Others have much less and are grappling with far worse problems. However, I am not where I envisioned myself being at 33 and feel like I want more out of life but don’t know where to start. On some days, I’ll get a rush of motivation and become inspired to take the next steps in my career and social life, but those moments are few and far between in comparison to the restlessness and anxiety that plagues me the majority of the time. I hate to say it, but it’s much easier to hide in my room and daydream than it is to seize the day.

Thankfully, when I’m wrapped up in my thoughts and mental prison (as I currently am while writing this article), I have brief moments of remembering that God’s

timing has a lot to do with why I am “stuck,” and that not everything is in my control; however, I also recognize that I have to be willing to “do the work” and put myself out there as much as possible.

It’s also important for me to remember that comparison can sometimes be the bane of my existence and seeing what others post on social media exacerbates my tendency to self criticize. What’s good for the goose isn’t always good for the gander, and I try to keep that in mind when I begin beating myself up about not being ready for children, having nothing close to a husband and being in no rush for a mortgage anytime soon. I’ll eventually pull myself out of this funk (as I always eventually do) and once that happens, maybe I’ll plant myself in the hardware section of Home Depot and find an honest man with the right priorities. That’s a start, right?

While being fully present for her daughters is also a daily personal goal, perfecting that work/life balance as a small business owner also requires personal balance for Megan!

“Luckily, both kids are in school during the day, so I get most of my work done then. I take limited sessions during the week and have a maximum number of weddings that I take yearly – which enables me to not miss time with them, while still prioritizing my clients.”

While she typically concentrates on weddings here in the Carolinas, Megan does offer travel services and photographed a wedding in Italy last year!

“My best advice to newly engaged couples is to be choosy when selecting your wedding vendors,” she shares. “A vendor team can either make or break your wedding day.”

When couples book Megan as their wedding photographer, she shares with them her own list of other recommended vendors as well. She also stresses that simply relating to a photographer’s personality isn’t enough – it’s important to find one whose editing style you also love.

“When I meet with potential couples, I always say I’m the one person they will be with the most on their wedding day, so it’s crucial that you love me!” she adds.

DEALING WITH Suicide AS A SURVIVOR

Four years ago this week was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the worst day of my life. Someone very close to me died by suicide. Losing a loved one to suicide results in an unimaginable pain –one that brings a unique mix of grief, guilt, confusion and unanswered questions. The journey of healing is deeply personal and non-linear but know that you are not alone.

Here are some key strategies to help you navigate this difficult time.

ALLOW YOURSELF TO GRIEVE

Grief after suicide is complex and may include a mix of feelings such as sadness, anger, guilt or even relief if the person was struggling for a long time. All of these emotions are valid. There is no “right” way to grieve.

RELEASE THE BURDEN OF GUILT

Many survivors struggle with “What if?” thoughts – wondering if they could have done something differently. Know that suicide is rarely caused by a single event but rather a combination of factors, including mental health struggles. Blaming yourself won’t change the past, but forgiving yourself can help you move forward.

HONOR YOUR LOVED ONE IN A MEANINGFUL WAY

Rather than focusing solely on how your loved one died, find ways to celebrate his or her life such as:

• Creating a memorial, such as a scrapbook or a tree planting.

Non-Profit Supporting Western NC Teens’ Hope for Prom

When Hurricane Helene swept through western North Carolina in September of 2024, it left behind not only a path of physical destruction, but deep emotional scars across small towns and mountain communities, as well. While disaster relief poured into major cities, the quietest corners of the state were often overlooked, until one young woman, Reanna Ruark, decided to change that narrative and bring some normalcy back to so many lives.

FROM PAGEANT PLATFORM TO NON-PROFIT

Reanna Ruark, recently crowned Universe United Miss North Carolina 2025, is more than a beauty pageant winner, she is a force for connection and compassion. Reanna’s platform for the pageant was recognizing the desire of people in the Triad to assist those affected by Hurricane Helene and, with her non-profit, Shining Through the Storm, Reanna became a bridge between the two regions of the state, taking on special projects to make a difference.

“Prom is such an important milestone for many teens, but for those whose lives were disrupted by Hurricane Helene, it can feel like an impossible and significant milestone that can’t be attained. With families still rebuilding their homes and lives, I wanted to ensure that these students could still experience the joy and celebration of prom. As someone in the pageant world, I know how special it feels to put on a dress and get your hair and makeup done – it’s a moment of confidence and celebration. I wanted to offer that same experience to these girls, helping them feel beautiful, despite everything they have been through and that was the idea behind the prom dress collections,” said Reanna. What began as a simple but heartfelt idea has grown into a grassroots movement.

The prom dress project became the spark that lit a much larger fire. Reannna quickly recognized a powerful desire among people in the Triad region of North Carolina to reach out and support their neighbors to the west.

“The response to our request for dresses was incredible! We collected more than 800 dresses through 11 collection locations in the Triad and Charlotte locations. Thanks to the generosity of our community, people really came together, donating new and gently used formal dresses, shoes, accessories and more. The initiative grew and, on Good Friday, we gave out 60 free haircuts to individuals during spring break, helping them feel confident and prepared for important milestones like prom and upcoming job interviews. The support we received was heartwarming, and it was amazing to see how many wanted to help ensure that students impacted by Hurricane Helene could still experience the joy and celebration of prom. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who contributed – this event truly showed the power of community when we unite for a common cause,” Reanna commented.

DURING HARD TIMES, NORMALCY CAN MEAN THE MOST

The response to the prom dress collection drive, from donors to recipients, was overwhelming, and Reanna has a few stories that have impacted her.

“I’ve heard so many moving stories from teens and families who are still recovering from Hurricane Helene. One story that really stuck with me was from a young woman who told me that prom was the one thing she had been looking forward to, but with her family still rebuilding their home, she didn’t think it would be possible. She said she felt like prom was just another thing that life had taken from her. Hearing this, I knew I had to do something to make sure these teens didn’t miss out on such an important milestone. Another young woman, who had been homeless since the hurricane, found the perfect dress. She shared that it was the first time she had felt beautiful since everything changed for her. It was incredibly moving to hear that something as simple as a prom dress could help restore her confidence and sense of self worth. Moments like this remind me why the work of Shining Through the Storm is so important – helping teens who have been through so much still feel celebrated and special,” Reanna stated.

YOU ALWAYS GET BACK MORE THAN YOU GIVE

There are many sayings about giving and, for Reanna Ruark and her work with Shining Through the Storm, they all became tangible.

“The most rewarding part of the effort has been seeing how much of an impact it’s had on the students we have helped. Being able to provide them with the opportunity to feel confident, celebrated and special after everything they’ve been through is incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about the dresses, but about giving them a moment to feel like themselves again – something they truly deserve after such challenging circumstances,” said Reanna. But, prom dresses were just the beginning, Reanna and Shining Through the Storm has upcoming projects to continue helping those in need.

Rescued A Tenured Nurse From Stepping Away From Her Calling

Being a registered nurse was a calling for me, but when I stepped into the role of primary caregiver for my 96-year-old grandfather, my life changed forever. I was working tirelessly, graveyard shifts every weekend, in the emergency department. My grandfather, a widower whom we lovingly called “Poppy Pop,” had moved from his Chapel Hill home he built for his family in 1967 to a local assisted living facility. Over the next year, Poppy Pop’s health began to decline, and he suffered a number of falls within a short period of time. At each hospital stay, I became increasingly frustrated watching from the sidelines as other medical professionals cared for him. With years of experience in nearly every area of the inpatient hospital, my gut feeling was that he deserved better. A protective instinct emerged from inside of me, advocating that he should be discharged to my home where I could care for him. When divulging my intentions to my hospital supervisor, a reprimanded response, “you can’t do that,” only fueled my motivation to do exactly what I knew I should and could. For more than two decades, I had sacrificed nights, weekends and holidays away from my husband and children to care for others. The motivation for me to finally make my own family and my Poppy Pop my priority was overwhelming.

Just two days after his last major surgery, the ambulance arrived at my home where we lifted his frail body from the stretcher to the newly placed hospital bed, amongst a sea of medical equipment in the sunroom of my home. Nothing could have prepared me for the journey ahead. I devised care plans and schedules, planned and cooked special meals, managed medications and went to doctor’s appointments. I changed, shaved, bathed and washed day in and day out. Yet those tasks contrasted with invaluable moments in time – watching old westerns and favorite shows, reading from my grandmother’s journals, playing checkers, putting together puzzles and listening repeatedly

to stories of the past. I laughed, cried, reflected on life and developed new understandings, deeper appreciations and a new perspective on life. Simultaneously, the accomplishment of nursing Poppy Pop back to a reasonable state of physical health made me feel validated in my decisions and motivation.

My heart began to break as I gradually learned that, despite my persistent efforts, he would never fully recover. The weeks rolled by and, regardless of what cuisine I created just for Poppy Pop, his appetite continued to dwindle. My sweet grandfather, my hero, was withering away to nothing right before my very own eyes. His body steadily declined to a state I never imagined would come so soon, and I was not prepared. Despite the tender loving care provided by my family and me, I watched, feeling helpless and incapable as my Poppy Pop transitioned from this life. I was broken. I had not only lost a best friend, but felt I had failed, as well. It was time to step away from the calling I had loved for more than two decades. Months later, when I was first introduced to Seniors Helping Seniors, I could not fully appreciate the significance of the gifts I had both given and received during those last months of my grandfather’s life. The opportunity to work with the Seniors Helping Seniors® team restored my confidence in humanity and in nursing. The uniqueness of providing services for Seniors by Seniors taught me that caregiving isn’t always about helping someone get better but rather be better. Through genuine acts of like-minded individuals, both the caregiver and client gain independence, enrichment, quality of life, and a brighter future. Regardless of how long that future may be, through shared moments in time, mature, active caregivers beautifully exemplify dignity, empowerment and respect with clients and their families. In honor of Poppy Pop, I am committed to creating mutually beneficial and enriching relationships through my work with Seniors Helping Seniors Winston West services to others.

BBQ CHOPPED CHICKEN

This month, I wanted to share a great recipe that I’ve been making a lot recently. It’s great to feed a crowd, pretty simple and has that great classic BBQ taste but, instead of chopped or pulled pork, it’s chicken!

I usually get a whole chicken with giblets from Harris Teeter for this which usually runs around $7-11, so it is also a very cheap meal. I use the spatchcock method to cook it a little quicker and more evenly.

INGREDIENTS

1 whole chicken

BBQ Seasoning of choice (I go for a simple SPG (salt pepper garlic) or Fire & Smoke Society Sweet Preacher – a recent favorite of mine

Vinegar based BBQ sauce (I always go with Cackalacky Secret Sauce, a local NC made sauce that is great)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat smoker/cooker to 300 degrees.

2. Cut the backbone out of the chicken with kitchen shears or a very sharp knife.

3. Take any remaining giblets, etc. out.

4. Flip the bird back over – where the breasts are facing up – pat dry and season liberally all over.

5. Once the cooker is up to the correct temperature, throw the chicken in – for a medium sized bird, this usually will take 90 minutes at 300 degrees – if it’s a little bigger, it can take slightly longer, but usually around two hours is the most this will take.

6. Once that center breast meat is temping around 160 internal, you can pull it. Let it rest for 10 minutes; it will carry over to that 165 temperature at this point

7. After it’s rested, cut it up however you like, I usually do the breasts/white meat separate from the dark meat.

8. Once it’s cut off the bones, get a large knife and chop it up into tiny pieces, toss in a mixing bowl and mix it up with a few tablespoons of the Vinegar BBQ sauce.

9. You can eat this right off the plate or on some buns for a Chopped BBQ Chicken Sandwich – either way, is great!

Grow Your Business, Keep Your Peace

Can you believe that, by the end of the month, we’ll be halfway through the year? I pray you’ve been crushing your business and life goals, and if you are, I pray even harder that you aren’t neglecting your peace. When 2025 started, I did not know what was in store for me and my jewelry business. In January’s column, I wrote about how it’s important to listen to what God wants you to do this year because He could be calling you to speed up or slow down.

You may have written some goals and submitted them to God, like I did. I realize I am in a season of stretching because He is calling me to build and propel for something great that’s nearby. Like a long-distance track runner, I’m at my “tempo pace,” and God does not want me to slow down. I also realize the warfare happening that’s forming weapons to attack my peace and incite worry about the remainder of the year, as God has me in a business wilderness. At the beginning of my business journey, I had no problem spending money to try things out because everything was an experiment. Now, I notice hesitation because I’m nervous of being in a bind.

If you find yourself in a similar place, know this is an opportunity for you to see how God will supernaturally provide. We have to trust what He said and find peace in this time of uncertainty, so we don’t rob ourselves of enjoying the journey.

Here are some ways to do that:

Talking to Others: I’m certain you have at least one person who is an expert at calming you down so you can think logically. No matter what you bring, they can always help you realize everything is actually fine. Talk to them often.

Invest in Systems: Many tools can make running your business easier. Use the money God poured into your business for the people, software and services that will take things off your plate so you can continue hearing from Him about your next steps.

Going to Church/Staying in the Word: If you stay in the Word and surround yourself with people who know God, you will be reminded

that weapons can form against you, but they won’t prosper (Isaiah 54:17). You will remember that a wilderness season is God-ordained (Matthew 4:1). Until our very last breath, we will always need God to help us endure what this life throws at us.

Use God’s Strategy: The story has already been written and, as children of God, we won! So that means He knows exactly how to get you from points A to Z, so don’t question His plan and don’t delay. He knows what lies ahead, and you can rest easy knowing you can hear His voice when He tells you to go left or right, up or down. We actually have it easy; He does all the hard work.

I call the community I’m creating through my business, “Peacemakers,” and we’re guided by Matthew 5:9. Peacemakers are children of God, and it’s my calling to extend peace to you as well and help you find it. You are a part of God’s plan, and He brought you this far – He will not leave you (Deuteronomy 31:8). Find that peace and hold on to it. I have faith in you.

Yet, for most of us, change brings discomfort, uncertainty and even fear. So, how can we take control and lead ourselves through the inevitable shifts that come our way? ACKNOWLEDGE THE CHANGE

Change is inevitable, necessary and often an opportunity for growth. Instead of resisting it, recognize its importance and remind yourself that adaptability is a strength.

MANAGE YOUR DOUBTS AND CONCERNS

Uncertainty can fuel anxiety, but clarity reduces fear. Ask yourself, “Do I understand the ‘why’ behind the change?” If you have concerns, talk to your boss or a trusted advisor.

SHIFT TO A POSITIVE MINDSET

Reframing change as a learning opportunity can make all the difference. Instead of focusing on the disruption, ask: “What new skills, perspectives or experiences can this bring?”

MANAGE YOUR STRESS

Navigating change requires mental and physical resilience. Prioritize self care and ensure that you exercise, eat foods that fuel your body, get a good night’s sleep and practice mindfulness.

COMMUNICATE & STAY ENGAGED

Now that we’ve learned to lead ourselves through change, let’s learn how to lead others through change using the CHANGER framework.

Many change efforts fail because others don’t feel equipped to succeed in the new environment. Assess what skills and knowledge gaps exist and provide the information needed.

NURTURE AND ENGAGE OTHERS

People don’t resist change; they resist being changed Engage them in the change by:

• Encouraging participation in decision making.

• Listening to concerns and addressing them openly.

• Helping employees focus on what they can control, not what they can’t.

GET A HANDLE ON YOUR EMOTIONS

Leaders set the tone for how others respond to change. If you’re overwhelmed, fearful or resistant yourself, others will pick up on that.

EXTEND EMPATHY

The Origins of Everyday Things

It’s easy to overlook the objects that make up our everyday lives. From pencils to pillows, shoes to sugar and Coca-Cola to coffee, so many of the things we use daily have interesting and often surprising origins.

SCISSORS

Scissors have by far the most ancient roots of all the junk in the drawer. The oldest scissors dated to between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. These ancient scissors were a single piece of metal bent so that the two cutting blades were positioned near each other, and the user would press them together. In 1761, Robert Hinchliffe developed a steel-casting method for scissor blades. When they were attached to each other and handles added, they looked nearly identical to the scissors we know today.

TOOTHBRUSHES

Would you believe that early toothbrushes were made with hog hair? According to the American Dental Association, a Chinese emperor patented a brush made of stiff, coarse hog hair set into a handle made of bone or bamboo in the 15th century. Hog or horsehair toothbrushes continued to be used for hundreds of years. The modern toothbrush as we know it was invented by a team at DuPont in 1935 and showcased the world’s first fully synthetic fiber – nylon. At first, it wasn’t a big seller since early nylon was stiff and abrasive, and brushing one’s teeth still wasn’t considered a daily necessity. However, by the end of World War II, Americans were influenced by the hygiene habits of returning soldiers, and by the time DuPont introduced softer bristles in 1950, a booming industry was born.

PENCILS

In the time of the Roman Empire, documents were transcribed on papyrus with a lead metal rod called a stylus. Later, in the 16th century, graphite was used for writing. Graphite is so fragile that it requires a holder, often fashioned from wood, creating the first pencil. Pencils as we know them today were mass produced in the mid to late-17th century in Germany by the Faber-Castel Company. The US pencil business started booming in the 19th century. It was also around this time that pencils began to be painted. Before this, pencilmakers would leave their pencils unpainted to show the natural wood. But, starting in the 19th century, Chinese graphite gained a reputation as the best in the world. In Chinese culture, yellow is associated with royalty and regal qualities, and

HIGH HEELS

Did you know that the high heel was originally invented for function and not fashion? The streets of medieval England were the dumping ground for everything from dirty water to trash. Horses and other animals walked the streets and their droppings were left wherever they fell. The fear of what you could get on your nice shoes and clothing became the inspiration for the first high heel. This shoe was originally used as an “overshoe.” Instead of being worn all the time, the wearer would slide it over the everyday shoe to elevate the wearer above the sewage on the streets. When the wearer got to their destination, they would remove the overshoe and wear their clean shoes into the building.

PILLOWS

The phrase, “sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite,” wasn’t commonly used until the 1800s. However, it was still the incentive behind the ancient creation of pillows. The earliest known use of pillows was in Mesopotamia around 7,000 BCE. But, unlike pillows of today, these ancient pillows were not intended to be comfortable, as they were often made of stone! Instead, their main intention was to keep insects from climbing into people’s noses, mouths and ears while they slept on the ground. Later, the Ancient Greeks and Romans focused on making pillows that improved comfort while sleeping. Although, generally only the upper class owned pillows at that time.

KLEENEX

Do you ask for a tissue or a Kleenex? The disposable tissue dates indirectly back to World War I, when the company Kimberly-Clark created a type of crepe paper for use as a filter in gas masks. They had also been working on developing a new product that would turn into Kotex, the feminine hygiene product line. The company kept the “EX” ending from Kotex when they modified it, making it softer and thinner, and sold it as Kleenex. Originally it was meant to remove cold cream and makeup. As far back as 1000 AD, Ethiopians chewed the seeds and berries of the coffee plant for its stimulant effects. Nearby Yemen was the first to cultivate and roast the beans for brewing as Sufi mystics there used it to enhance their spiritual experiences. Coffee was shipped throughout the Arab world from the Yemeni port of Mocha and made its way to Europe in the 17th century.

While the ancient Greeks wielded large, two-pronged tools to carve and serve meat, seventh-century Middle Eastern rulers were the first to bring a fork to their mouths. Around the 11th century, the first fork reached a Venetian table in the hand of a Byzantine princess, to the horror of local priests, who maintained that God had invented fingers for eating. It took more than 500 years for Italians to adopt the utensil, which begs the question –how was pasta twirled before the fork?

In the late 1800s, former Confederate colonel John Pemberton began experimenting with a drink that would serve as an alternative to morphine. The inventor developed a crippling addiction to the narcotic as a result of an injury sustained in battle. By 1885, he patented Pemberton’s French Wine Cola nerve tonic – which was inspired by a French coca wine known as Vin Mariani – at his drugstore, Pemberton’s Eagle Drug and Chemical House in Columbus, Georgia. However, the following year, both Atlanta and Fulton County, Georgia passed prohibition legislation, leading Pemberton to develop a non-alcoholic alternative to his wine tonic. Thus, Coca-Cola was born. Pemberton sold the ownership rights to Asa Griggs Candler, a businessman, whose marketing tactics led Coca-Cola to its dominance of the global soft drink market throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

We all know the obvious addictions –alcohol, opioids, gambling. But, what about the ones hiding in plain sight? The late night Netflix binges that leave us wired and sleepless. The “just one more click” online shopping spree. The pint of ice cream that vanishes between dinner and the dishwasher.

If you’ve ever thought, Why do I keep doing this when I know it’s not helping?, you’re not alone – and you’re not broken.

Addiction isn’t just about substances. It’s about compulsions that take over, slowly replacing intention with habit and self care with self soothing. Whether it’s food, tech, shopping or even productivity, we often use these behaviors to avoid stress, numb discomfort or simply escape for a moment.

THE EVERYDAY ADDICTIONS NO ONE TALKS ABOUT

Modern women carry a heavy mental load. We show up for everyone – kids, partners, parents, clients – but often forget ourselves in the process. That’s where the sneaky comforts sneak in.

• Streaming: That “one more episode” spiral can steal sleep, rest and quality time. What started as a way to unwind becomes a nightly ritual of avoidance.

• Shopping: The thrill of adding to cart is real – but if your porch has become your therapist, it’s worth asking why.

A SIMPLE DAILY PRACTICE TO REGAIN CONTROL

Try this Emotional Weather Forecast – a fiveminute morning routine that helps you stay grounded and intentional:

1. Gratitude: Name 2–3 things for which you’re truly thankful – include at least one challenge you’re learning from.

2. Plan for the Day: Mentally walk through your schedule and responsibilities.

3. Emotional Check-In: Ask, “How am I feeling right now?” (e.g., tired, anxious, calm, frustrated).

4. Watch For: What are your personal patterns? Maybe it’s irritation during carpool, reaching for snacks during work stress or zoning out on your phone before bed.

5. Strive For: Choose 1–2 ways you want to be today. Patient? Focused? Lighthearted?

The final performances will take place at the historic May Dell Outdoor Theater at Salem Academy & College in Winston-Salem on June 27 and 28, with many more opportunities to enjoy Hamlet throughout June.

Whether you’re an avid Shakespeare fan or someone curious about the classics, PSC’s production invites all audiences to experience the magic of live theater—no prior knowledge of Hamlet required.

BRINGING SHAKESPEARE TO THE COMMUNITY

Founded by locally based industry veterans Carl Forsman, David McGraw, and Kim Shively, Piedmont Shakespeare Company is dedicated to creating high-quality, accessible theater for everyone in the community. PSC believes theater should not be an exclusive experience for those who can afford it, but an

inclusive one, bringing together audiences to share in stories that reflect our humanity. “What better way to start than with Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s most profound and universally relevant plays?” said Co-Artistic Director Kim Shively.

“It’s such a privilege to be part of this inaugural production,” said Alyssa James, a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, who plays a key role in Hamlet. “This production represents both what has come before and what is yet to come, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to dive in!”

Natalie Broyhill is the founder and owner of Tartan Professional Organizing and is celebrating four fantastic years of business in 2025. Prior to starting Tartan, she earned a bachelor of arts in English and art history at Meredith College and worked at the North Carolina Museum of Art and Reynolda House. What started as a modest team of two and a handful of projects per month has grown into a thriving small business with a fiercely loyal client base, expanding service offerings for individuals and businesses, and a growing team of organizers. “I love the ripple effect of our work; we give our clients back time, space and mental clarity -- and it gives them the freedom to focus on themselves, their families and our community.” A special example of this for Natalie is her continued relationship with LEAD Girls of NC – Tartan’s first client. “I knew and trusted Joy to be honest and kind with me on my first project, and she has been a sounding board, cheerleader and a loyal client since day one. HEATFEST 2025

Heatfest will keep you moving through the hot and sweaty summer! Here’s how it works: $25 buy in. Must register by end of day June 15th. Fee includes entry into the competition, shirt and discount code to Beat the Heat 5K on July 12th (sent out week of June 15th). Participants need to do two miles OUTSIDE every day from June 15th through July 12th. Your two miles MUST BE POSTED on Strava to count. Heatfest participants will be invited into the Fleet Feet cool-down tent for a post-race summer cocktail. Heatfest finisher shirts will be handed out during a very exclusive finishers-only ceremony in the Fleet Feet tent at the Beat the Heat 5K. Proceeds benefit our charity: Good Works Engine.

JULY 12

BEAT THE HEAT

5pm, Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, 410 Deacon Boulevard in W-S. One of the most fun races in town! Beat the Heat has been one of the most popular races in NC for more than 30 years! It has been selected multiple times by Endurance Magazine as the best 5K in Triad NC and was featured in Running Journal magazine as the #1 “Under the Radar” race in the south. Beat the Heat is a charity event with proceeds going to local nonprofits that support health and fitness in the community. Shirt quantities are limited. Register soon to be assured of getting the shirt style and size that you want. Participant names will be printed on race bibs for those who register at least one month in advance or by June 14th.

BATTLE OF WITS CAMP

9:30am-4:30pm, Little Theatre of W-S. Shakespeare had a deep understanding of how people behave and think. His wit and humor come out in his characters’ observations about the world and each other. Campers will incorporate voice, movement and acting as they explore Shakespeare.

JULY 19

HANDS-ON-HISTORY DAY

1:30-4:30pm, Historic Bethabara Park. Get your hands-on-history by interacting with an 18th-century candlemaker, blacksmith, woodworker and potter; sampling food cooked over an open fire; playing Colonial games; touring the 1788 Gemeinhaus and 1834 Log House; watching a soap making demonstration; participating in a water relay; examining archaeological ruins, artifacts; and more. Admission is free!

JULY 21-25

DREAMS TO STAGE CAMP

9:30am-4:30pm, Little Theatre of W-S. Let’s bring our dreams to life! In this camp, we will let our imaginations run wild. Campers will dream big as they collaboratively bring a dream filled story to life. A Dream of a Showcase will be at the end of the week.

JULY 21-25

SKETCH COMEDY CAMP

9:30am-4:30pm, Little Theatre of W-S. We’ll explore the fast-paced quick wit of sketch comedy. Sketch comedy takes the everyday and finds the humor in it. Campers will hone their comedic timing as they explore this fun genre. A Sketch Showcase will be held at the end of the week. Campers will learn self-expression, empathy, comedic timing and discipline.

JULY 24

SAVE THE DATE – NC FIREFIGHTERS FUNDRAISER

Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius. Hosted by LKN Magazine. Join us for an unforgettable evening in support of North Carolina’s firefighters and paramedics. The night will feature a live auction, a powerful performance by Christina Eagle and, most importantly, an opportunity to help provide critical funding for the heroes who save lives every day. JULY 28-AUGUST 1

LET’S LAUGH CAMP

9:30am-4:30pm, Little Theatre of W-S. From jokes to funny stories, we will explore everything that makes us laugh. Campers will explore how to tell a joke, what faces are the funniest and how it all goes together to create a fun, creative and laugh-out-loud story. A Hilarious Showcase will be at the end of the week.

JULY 28-AUGUST 1

CREATING A CHARACTER CAMP

8am-5pm, Little Theatre of W-S. Creating a Character is the most fundamental part of acting. Campers will explore how their voice, body and facial expressions change a character. They will explore how motivation and backstory determine how a character behaves in a scene. In this camp, our actors will expand their acting skills, getting them ready for middle and high school audition season! There will be a Character Showcase at the end of the week.

AUGUST 30

LABOR DAY MILE

5pm, Forsyth Country Day School, 5501 Shallowford Road in Lewisville. Join us this Labor Day weekend for a fun and fast mile race designed especially for runners of all paces and backgrounds! Whether you’re chasing a personal best or just out to enjoy a festive run, this is the perfect way to enjoy your holiday weekend. After you cross the finish line, grab some refreshments and stick around to watch the excitement build as top local elite runners take the course in the final wave. It’s a rare chance to witness homegrown talent up close, cheer them on and feel the energy of competitive racing at its finest – all in one unforgettable day.

“When Does Gossip Turn Into a Smear Campaign?”

Few things hurt as much as betrayal from family and friends who you think would have your back. When gossip becomes a full blown smear campaign, the pain isn’t just in the words – it’s in the twisting of the truth, the loss of trust and the heartbreak of being misunderstood by people who should be part of your “tribe.” But, are you obligated to carry around the weight of the untruths? I am so glad you asked!

UNDERSTANDING THE “WHY” OF THE TRUTH TWISTING

When people twist the truth, it is rarely about you. Often, it’s about their need to control the narrative, protect their ego or divert attention

from their own poor behavior. Maybe your growth threatens their comfort. Maybe your boundaries feel like rejection to them. Recognizing this doesn’t excuse the damage –but it can help you detach from internalizing it.

THEIR VERSION OF YOUR STORY ISN’T THE TRUTH

Your family or friends may repeat their version of the truth with conviction, gather allies and spread half-truths like a wildfire, but repetition doesn’t equal reality. Just because they’re louder doesn’t mean they are right! Your story, your truth is valid, even if it makes others uncomfortable.

EXPLAINING YOURSELF WON’T CHANGE THEIR INTENTIONS

You may feel tempted to defend yourself, to clarify, to fix the misunderstanding, but when someone is determined to see you as the bad guy or villain, no amount of explanation will shift their lens. You’re not dealing with a misunderstanding. You’re dealing with a decision they’ve already made.

DON’T LET ANOTHER’S LIES BECOME YOUR IDENTITY

Smear campaigns are designed to isolate and diminish. But, you are not the person they describe in whispered phone calls or group chats. Don’t shrink yourself to fit their false version of you. Stand tall in your truth…you know who you are!

SILENCE CAN BE A STRENGTH

This one I learned the hard way…you don’t owe everyone a response. Let your actions and the way you treat people do the talking. Sometimes the most powerful move is to say nothing – not because you’re weak, but because you’ve chosen peace over performance. Silence isn’t surrender – it’s a boundary. As my bestie told me when an in-law was determined to destroy me, “make sure you don’t dance in the chaos they’re creating.”

FOCUS ON THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOUR HEART

Anchor yourself to those who see you, who understand your silence and the family you choose. Let them remind you that your worth isn’t up for debate.

DON’T LET GOSSIP DISTRACT FROM THE HEALING YOU NEED

Gossip is an annoyance and a noise. Focusing on your healing is sacred. While those attacking you rage in their hate, you focus on rebuilding your peace, your purpose for your life and your joy. Trust me on this one, the best rebuttal to a smear campaign is not revenge – it is a life lived freely, full of self respect. The lies of others will eventually be seen and uncovered. Time always brings things full circle.
