FORK UNION TRACK AND FIELD NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2012—JANUARY 2013
The Blue Devils wasted no time getting an invitational win in 2013. Behind the efforts of Tyron McDade and Clyde Gross, the Fred Hardy title will remain with the hosts for another year. McDade was the winner of the high jump and a close third in the high hurdles. Clyde Gross ran a career best to win the title in the 55 high hurdles and was part of the 4x400. The distance runners were big for FUMA too, as the Lomong brothers both had podium finishes in the 500 and 1000. Russ Garver ran a career best to claim fourth in the 1600. All three were back for the 4x400 where they helped FUMA to a third place. Jim Squatriglia and Richlon Freeman perhaps had the clutch performances for FUMA in the meet with third and fourth places in the shot put. The duo more than picked up the slack for defending champion Charlton Larkins who sat out with an injury. Rains Mayfield topped the performance of his brother Staton in the Fred Hardy meet with a 13’6 personal best and a second place finish. Rounding out FUMA’s 70 point total were vertical jumpers Conrad Shewalter and Brian Burton The win marks the eleventh time in the twenty-four year history of the meet that a FUMA team has won. Next year will mark the silver anniversary of an event that brought big time high school track and field to central Virginia.
MR. TRACK Sophomore Peter Lomong has had a super successful early season. At press time, Lomong, is number 5 in the 300 and 1600, number 2 in both the 1000 and 500 and is on two state leading relays. Peter also dabbled in the triple jump where his performance landed him at number 14.
