A MESSAGE FROM

The President

Just over 121 years ago our founder, Dr. William E. Hatcher, established Fork Union as a school to educate and inspire young men in an extraordinary way. We teach morals and values in the classroom, barracks and on the playing fields. More than a century later, we are still hard at work continuing that mission. Today’s world is not without challenges for a school such as Fork Union; however, a military school like Fork Union is almost an anachronism in today’s society. A recent article in The Atlantic magazine described this situation well. The author, Paul Barnwell, himself a teacher, observed that, “as my students seemed to crave more meaningful discussions and instruction relating to character, morality, and ethics, it struck me how invisible these issues have become in many schools. By omission, are U.S. schools teaching their students that character, morality, and ethics aren’t important in becoming productive, successful citizens?” If so, what’s their world-view basis for morality? We, however, understand the critical importance of our mission in today’s world. Our cadets, from 7th graders to postgraduates, continue to develop in body, mind, and spirit just as generations of our alumni did when they were here. We still pledge, we pray, we do pushups, and we teach physics. Our cadets learn and internalize values like respect and integrity, they develop character and discipline, they understand the important role that faith plays in their lives. I think Dr. Hatcher would be pleased and proud of the way in which Fork Union Military Academy is continuing the legacy he left to us. We need more of you to join your fellow alumni and friends of the Academy to share your time and treasure to help us help the boys. We are growing. In fact, this year we enrolled more boarding students than we did last year, and our 7th grade doubled in size. Success enables more success, and we look forward to greater enrollment growth next year. Help us help these boys. Press on doing good. Thank you, and may God bless you and bless Fork Union Military Academy. Go FUMA!

Col David L. Coggins, USMC (Ret.) President Fork Union Military Academy 2

2019 Scholarship Winner - Jackson Pretus Jackson Monroe Pretus is a freshman from Charlottesville, VA, and is this year’s receipient of the Board of Trustees Scholarship. Why did you choose to apply to and attend Fork Union? As a student at Charlottesville Catholic School, I participated in Cross Country meets at Fork Union and always enjoyed these visits. The campus was beautiful, and the cadets were very impressive. After talking with FUMA admissions staff at high school information night at my school, I decided to take a formal tour. I came back for another admissions event a few months later and my mind was made up. I strongly desired a school environment where I could grow and develop as a leader, scholar, athlete, and disciple of Christ. The core values of the school were a perfect fit for me. It was a very easy decision to choose Fork Union. Since arriving at Fork Union, what activities have you participated in? What do you look forward to taking part in? I appreciate the opportunity to stay very busy at school! I’m currently a member of the Cross-Country team, where I have improved greatly under Coach Brown. I also participate in Theatre, Debate, Political Action, and Boy Scouts of America, where I am currently working on my Eagle Scout project. I am also a new member of Retan Rifles and will be traveling to Italy in March with the FUMA Goes Abroad program. In the future, I hope to take more active leadership positions past my current position of squad leader, especially with Retan Rifles and Boy Scouts. I’m also considering participating with the Quiz Bowl team, Interact club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and more!

How was your first term at Fork Union? My first term at FUMA was great! As to be expected, there was so much to learn which could be overwhelming at times, and I missed my family a lot. However, each day things got a little better and I made new friends, enjoyed my class, and fell into the rhythm of the school pretty easily. I was excited to start off with Honors Western Civilization, as I really love history. Major Acree was fantastic, so that made for a great start to my academic career here! What do you enjoy most about being at Fork Union? It’s tough to narrow down to just one thing, which probably says a lot about how I feel about FUMA! First, I am just so grateful for the Trustee Scholarship and for the tremendous opportunity it has given me to come here and succeed. I really love the One Subject Plan and CQ, as they allow for really in-depth study and discussions, and developing good study habits. I’ve also been fortunate to already meet some wonderful friends. The faculty and other cadets have all taught me so much and have made me feel very welcomed and supported. What are your goals and aspirations for the future? I tend to be an ambitious optimist, so I look forward to all that I hope to do and experience here at FUMA and beyond. College is just around the corner, and so far I am considering UVA, VMI, and West Point. I am potentially interested in a career in the military, public service, law, or education. I have two brothers with special needs, and I want to take an active role in advocating for them. Most importantly, I intend to pursue opportunities to lead, serve, and ultimately make a difference.

Choosing Fork Union The Abubakar-Shidi Family Behind every successful person is “structure” in Life, Moral, God, Discipline, Family and Friends. A person without his or her structural identity is like a ship sailing without a compass. We did not know anything about FUMA or anyone to tell us about FUMA when we first started. We just wanted to be done with our current public school. And all we knew was that we wanted our sons challenged, forced outside of their comfort zone, and to get structure in life.

M

y sons had always attended the local overcrowded public schools. They always managed to excel in their classes, both Elementary and Middle. Even though they come home with good grades every term and school year, I still felt something was amiss, but did not know what to do. One day I was doing laundry and found my 2nd grader’s favorite shirt at the bottom of the pile all torn up. I walked up to him and showed him the shirt. “I paid a lot of money for this Ben10 shirt,” I told him as I frowned. He started crying and begging me not to get angry with him and that it was not his fault that it got ripped. He said a kid in his class had ripped the shirt with a pair of scissors and that he didn’t want me to be upset, so he hid it in the bottom of

4

the laundry pile. I sat down next to him to properly understand what he just told me. I wanted to know where, how and how come it happened under an adult supervision. Lo and behold, this occurred in a class where the teacher was pre-occupied, when another kid took a pair of scissors and started cutting my son’s shirt for no apparent reason. A 2nd grader for that matter. “What if he had stabbed him with it” … my thoughts went through the roof. I blew a gasket and went up the chain of command with my fears, complaints and questions. I knew it was time to make the move and find a better school for my children.

“...God had led me to FUMA and had chosen the right people and school to be in our path during our journey at FUMA.”

My research yielded a number of schools, but none offered the structure I was looking for or addressed the need of my sons to be in a focused environment away from the interferences found at home, streets, and public schools. So, I expanded my research to include “Military” and I found Fork Union Military Academy (or FUMA luckily found me – because the ad popped up in my google search couple of times). I started reading FUMA reviews, and I was impressed. The idea of boarding never occurred to me until I found FUMA. Fortunately, there was an open house in Maryland with Col. Macek, which we visited. People asked me, “Why Military?” This question bothered me. So, we quickly scheduled a school visit to see if they had any “military torture chambers,” as that is what some friends joked about. But all we saw were offices, a social center, classrooms, and warm cozy dorms for the cadets and most especially dedicated staff. We were worried about the cost, but when Col. Billingsley laid out an attractive option, the rest was history. After this visit, we were “sold.” All that we saw during the visit really put my mind at rest, so when I am being asked “why FUMA,” I can without any doubt say that my kids are in good hands.

It has been a journey for my family being here at FUMA with three of my boys. When Sulaimon first started at FUMA, I was worried and had people ask if we were really sure about this decision. For two weeks after dropping him off, we were not able to talk to him because the rooms’ telephones were not activated yet. This “Civilian Detoxification,” aged me 100 years. When I finally got him on the phone and he said “mom, I am fine,” I started to breathe again.

The first year of Sulaimon being in FUMA was tougher on me than I wanted to admit. He was extremely lonely, since he had never spent a day outside of the house before. I questioned myself for couple of months, as I scavenged FUMA websites to see if I can see any pictures of him, just so I can be sure he was alright. Sulaimon on the other hand, had thrown himself into all sports trying to numb the pain of not being able to wake up late, watch too much T.V., play “Roblox” and “Minecraft” after school and on weekends.

When we finally got to visit him from NJ, I kept looking at him trying to find every reason to second guess myself that I had done the wrong thing by sending him to FUMA, but there were none. We had spent that parent weekend at a nearby hotel. The next morning, Sulaimon had woken up “earlier” and had taken care of himself including “fixing” his bed without being told… Wow, I said to myself, I was amazed. I looked at his younger brother, Abdul, and said “you are next to go to FUMA.” As a Nigerian, the majority of us were raised by numerous “proverbs” or “words of wisdom” that you are supposed to remind yourself with throughout your life. I have always held “discipline” as my word of wisdom. One can get all the degrees on the planet but without discipline, it is just a “piece of paper.” I also agree with Nido Qubein that said, “The price of discipline is always less than the pain of regret.” So, I told myself, FUMA is a sacrifice that I am willing to do for my kids until I “run out of gas.” My late father used to say, “raise your kids well so that they can give you peace in your old age,” which I agree with totally. I stopped worrying myself too much because I believed I made the right decision by choosing FUMA out of all the other boarding schools that I researched. 

5

By the time Abdul started FUMA, I had started to relax a bit. I would still float around FUMA website for pictures, but not as much. He also had dived into all activities and sincerely accepted the fact that this is for their future. I decided to move to VA from NJ to be closer to my boys, reduce the travel time and get Zain, my third son, acclimated to FUMA. When I was faced with the challenges and uncertainties of moving, the FUMA family rallied around my family without hesitation and made the transition seamless. With this in mind, it seals my faith that God had led me to FUMA and had chosen the right people and school to be in our path during our journey at FUMA. Registering Zain, my third son, in FUMA was his choice, as he wanted the same aura and confidence oozing out of his brothers for himself. So, I did not have to compel him for he couldn’t wait to start alongside his brothers. I was moved to tears and extremely happy when it was Zain’s turn to tour FUMA. Even though he has been visiting the school for over four years, Col. Billingsley and Capt. Barnette gave him his own tour. He got “his” own tour guide and all “his” questions got answered. It was “his” interview and “his” FUMA memorabilia (not his brothers’). It meant a lot to him that he was appreciated for him and not on behalf of his brothers. This meant a lot to me as well. I was so happy because I do not want him or his two older brothers to be in each other’s shadow. He is still his own person and discovering himself is what he needs to do. My three sons are all in different sports, volunteering, activities, and leadership roles. All these will build their character, mind, body and soul. I am still trying to convince Zain to continue playing his clarinet, Abdul to go back to cooking and or woodwork club and Sulaimon to continue playing clarinet also – but the jury’s still out on these requests. I envision my fourth son, Ziyad, attending FUMA as well and hope he gets the same warm welcome and FUMA treatment as his three older brothers. And if girls are allowed, my current 4th grader, Siara, and my 5th child will attend FUMA (just saying – you never know – if we have several parents that can convince FUMA to integrate). Like George Bernard Shaw said, “Life isn’t about

6

finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” My boys are men in training, discovering and creating themselves with FUMA and parent’s help. I have always reminded my sons that they are the leaders of tomorrow – and one cannot attain that role without God, structure, and discipline, which is where FUMA and we as parents comes in. My family cannot thank FUMA enough; Infirmary, Commandants, Teachers, TAC Officers, PTAs, Nurses, Volunteers, Trustees, Cadets, other Parents and all those that work together with me in getting my sons the success that is imminent in their horizon. As Louis Pasteur has said, “Chance favors the prepared mind.” I believe God, FUMA, and we as a family will prepare these boys for the future. I am so proud of my young men in training’s accomplishments.

From her young men: Sulaimon... I have attended FUMA for three years, now going onto my 4th year. While being here, I have seen FUMA change a lot. I feel that being a 7th grader back in the day was one of the hardest things to be. It was just how things were. Now, I see my brother and his fellow classmates running around and having fun. In my opinion, FUMA has changed for the better. Most people may not realize it, but FUMA does a lot of good for the people who attend or attended in the long run. FUMA is supposed to prepare you for life after high school. I think that it’s doing its job and so much more, and I only have my mom and dad to thank for such an opportunity. What I like about FUMA the most are the sports. You are not confined to a single sport and you can pick and choose which sport you want to do. In all my years here, I have run cross country, indoor track, played basketball, and ran outdoor track. I loved playing basketball and I love to run my hardest out on courses

and tracks all over Virginia. Before I came to FUMA, I used to be very lazy and would just lie around doing nothing. Occasionally, I would go outside and play basketball or race my friends. That would be all the exercise I would get sometimes. Now, I can see myself getting stronger and faster and all around better than I was before FUMA. I was the first one to go to FUMA, and it was nerveracking. I am not about to lie, I cried a lot for about two weeks. I was so homesick and depressed when I first arrived. I couldn’t make friends until the first day of class (which was about two weeks). There, I met my classmates. Some of them who would go on and keep attending school until the 8th grade. After that, almost all of them left. There are only a few of them still here to this day. About two weeks after classes had started, I could call my mom or dad. When I was finally able to call them, they were so worried and happy that I was doing so well here. My first leave was in a nearby hotel, since at the time we still lived in New Jersey (where I was born). It was nice to see all of my family again. My mother may say that when I first got home and spent the night, that I would get up and make the bed. That hadn’t happened. I only made the bed when she told me to make it. She was just shocked at how fast and crisp I made it. Eventually, I found myself living the FUMA life with ease. And now my brothers finally have their turn to share in the FUMA experience.

Abdul-Zahir... It is my third year being in FUMA. Comparing FUMA to other schools I attended, it is quite a turnaround. I came to FUMA because my older brother, Sulaimon, was enrolled and because my parents had fallen in love with the school. They were also trying to find a way to get us off the games and somewhat a heedless educational system with classes of over 20 something kids. With that kind of environment, it was hard to really retain what was being taught. Teachers go over

a checklist and expect you as the student to know the material for test or apply in real life. It was hard. Now at FUMA, there are some good and bad times, but mostly good times. Waking up early, eating quickly, formation, drill, parade practice and so on takes a lot of getting used to. And as my 8th grade English teacher, Maj. Wallace, always says, “Sometimes you just gotta embrace the “suck.” I have come to appreciate FUMA and my education at the school. I really appreciate the opportunity that was given to me to attend and I am forever grateful to GOD, my parents and FUMA.

Zainullahi... This is my first year in FUMA and I am starting to now settle down to the routine. I like the opportunity that I can do any sports I want. This fall I played soccer and I loved it. I also like that I can give back to FUMA by doing volunteer work. Col. Billingsley is always happy about my volunteering and is glad that I always do my assigned duties well. Even though I was registered at FUMA because my two older brothers are here, I like it because it allows me the same opportunities that were given to my brothers. My brothers have always been there for me and I will be there for my younger brother, Ziyad, when he registers in FUMA next year. 

Life

Beyond Fork Union With Seph Williams

Fork Union’s mission is to educate and develop young men to help them be successful in college and beyond. Below is the story of Seph Williams, a 2018 graduate who is achieving his goals, and looking toward the future. We asked him to share his stories with us, and we hope you enjoy reading about his Fork Union experience and how it helped drive him to success.

M

y name is Seph Williams and I am from Durham, NC. I currently attend North Carolina A&T State University, where I am in my Sophomore year. I graduated from Fork Union in 2018, and I had the wonderful opportunity of serving as the Bravo Company Commander my senior year. I can honestly say that my journey at FUMA and the lessons I learned have carried me through the trials and adversity that comes with life after FUMA. Fork Union for me was a carried-on legacy. I went to private middle school named Durham Nativity School, that only sent you to the top private high schools on the east coast! Some years before me my older brother went to that same middle school where he found out about Fork Union! After seeing the impact it had on his life I knew I had to have the same experience which is how I ended up at FUMA. After four years at FUMA I can truly say every moment between morning wake ups and TAPs was well worth it. However, starting off I didn’t exactly get it. I often asked myself why I was there. I questioned why, with me being so young, would I need to go to a military school, especially an all-male school! It wasn’t until my junior year that I began to clearly grasp the significance of what being at FUMA carried in my life. It exposed me to the reality of life in a place where it felt like it was far from real

8

life. I’ve come up in a generation of young adults that feel as if the world owes them something, and the truth of the matter is that the world doesn’t owe anything and FUMA teaches you that. It puts you in positions to understand that what you put in is what you get out. It instills in you a grind like no other. Those four years were the most important years of my life. My favorite memory at FUMA had to have been reporting for Leadership Training my Junior year. The previous year I was still finding myself and had the attitude that the world owed me something, so I had made some poor decisions and gotten into some trouble by the end of the school year. I remember walking into the dining hall for Leadership Training and I ran into Col. Fender. He took me to the side and he began to speak into my life. He knew I had made some mistakes and even though I felt I was undeserving, he still gave me a second chance. He saw something in me and believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. He spoke words into me that’d I’d never forget. Words that to this day lift me up when I want to be low. FUMA definitely prepared me for college as much as I let it. I always say staying in a cycle is a personal choice. I say that because if you buy in to the lessons at FUMA then it prepares you for your future. It exposed me to a discipline I wouldn’t have received elsewhere. It taught me to remain punctual on a daily basis, the two-hour study time six days a week helped me stay balanced, and the accountability system that is in place at FUMA kept me in line. Buying into those things definitely prepared me for college. It all comes with the grinding mentality. Several

times I’ve found myself in the library at college grinding at three in the morning, and it came so easy. My friends would be shocked that I would be full of energy and in the library at 3am, but all I knew was it’s grind time. It must be done. FUMA changed and developed me in many ways. One of the many lessons I learned is that you won’t be judged by what somebody does to you, but rather what you do to them. Being young minded at the time it was easy to try to look for an excuse to “get someone back” and try to play innocent. At the end of the day both parties were punished, and I learned that there is no excuse as to why you can’t rise above ignorance. FUMAs faculty and staff played a huge part in my development. I was always told you can’t force someone to understand what they haven’t experienced. It was weird to me having so many adults that barely knew me at the time see potential and capabilities that I didn’t see myself. The more I experienced it the more I pushed myself, and I began to want more for and believe in myself. Above everything, FUMA developed a mental toughness within me. My biggest fault was letting my heart and feelings lead my actions, but FUMA taught me how to take control of that with my mind, and how to evaluate a situation and react in a wise manner. The brotherhood and family that I found in FUMA is remarkable. This past year I have lost my dad, sister and brother, and the amount of support I have received in those times from trustees, faculty, staff, and my brothers was amazing. I’ve faced my toughest moments this year where there were days much like my freshman year where I didn’t see what I was capable of for myself, but as my FUMA family began to reach out it reminded me of the trying times at FUMA that forced me rise above and keep pushing. I can honestly say if it weren’t for my FUMA family I would have let my situation overtake me rather than me overtaking my situation. I have no friendships from FUMA - I have a family that could never be replaced. To the current students at FUMA, I would say keep pushing - you may not get why you’re there but it’s all for the making! Wishing that year or however many years you spend there you will learn lessons that many men haven’t learned yet. Never settle, know your worth and buy in to the good FUMA offers! Don’t focus on what seems to be the bad but focus on the good. It’s easy to find the error in other things and people, but let finding those errors make you self-evaluate and find the errors in yourself and become better. Life after FUMA presents a lot of good but also a lot of bad. How you choose to respond to it and let it affect you is your choice! I challenge you to become the best version of you that you can possibly be while you’re in an environment such as FUMA. 9

Founder’s Day Celebrating 121 Years O

ctober 15th, 2019 Fork Union Military Academy commemorated its 121st Founder’s Day with a Day of Giving, which brought in $16,558 in donations to the Academy Fund, and a birthday celebration. Cadets kicked off the birthday festivities with some field day competitions. The corps was intermixed and broken up into six teams in order to make the competition fair. Each team took on an Inflatable Obstacle Course, a Basketball Shoot, a Three-Legged Relay Race, an Ammo Can Relay Race, a Cornhole Toss, and a Drill Competition. The prize? Bragging rights and a pizza party! After working up an appetite, there was a cook-out hosted by the Estes Dinning Hall staff where cadets, faculty and community sat to enjoy a meal together, accompanied by a performance by Bennett Wales, Class of ’09. Bennett is the leader of a 5-piece rock n’ roll band from Virginia Beach, VA, called Bennett Wales & The Relief. Dinner ended with cadets blowing out 121 candles on a huge birthday cake! Following dinner, cadets enrolled in Theater, taught by Mrs. Jones, the schools Fine Arts Director, led a special program in Wicker Chapel which highlighted some of the Academy’s 121 years of history, complete with uniforms from the past. Founder’s Day was brought to a close with the performing 121 pushups to honor the school’s birthday. As the Corps of Cadets gathered on Fraley Circle to prepare for retreat, a time when cadets lower the American flag and ready themselves for study and sleep, each of the five companies completed 25 pushups, with staff, faculty and community joining the whole corps for the final 21.

FCA Winter Coat Drive For the second year, Fork Union Military Academy has held a coat drive where Cadets, faculty, and staff donate gently used coats and sweatshirts to those in need. Sometimes the needs of the less fortunate can be overlooked, and it is important to realize that those who need a helping hand may be right before our eyes, in our own towns. We are proud to say, with the help of Fork Union Military Academy and the Fork Union Community, The Fellowship of Christian Athletes club was able to provide over 260 coats and sweatshirts for the Farmville community. While we may not see who ultimately receives our coats, we have full hearts, knowing that the needs of the less fortunate are being met.

New & Improved

Vaughn Hall Rededicated as The Carol Childress Social Center

“It’s wonderful,” says Cadet Daniel Bartsevich of New Jersey, a staff sergeant in Alpha Company. “We are all able to come in there during our free time and get on the PlayStation 4, watch a movie in the theater, play some pool or ping-pong, or even get into the massage chair. I really think that it’s the perfect place to have some fun and relax from this busy daily schedule.” Cadet Bartsevich and his fellow cadets are very thankful for the renovations made to the Carol Childress Social Center, named at a recent dedication ceremony in honor of Mrs. Carol Childress, who served the Academy for 17 years. 12

The recreation facility is housed in Vaughan Hall and features four brand new televisions, pool and ping pong tables, a foosball table, several arcade games, and two electric massage chairs. The rest of the first floor consists a 28-seat movie theater complete with red leather seats, a middle school game room, and a snack bar offering everything from popcorn to nachos. Upstairs, four new game rooms were constructed with televisions, PlayStations, couches, and bathrooms. One room, reserved for seniors and PGs, has two televisions and two couches. Cadets can reserve a room to play videogames or watch TV, and can check out Nintendo Switche game consoles and DVDs at the snack bar.

Vaughan Hall was first built in the late 1930s to serve as a social center for cadets. Major funding for the original building construction came from the Vaughan family of Galax, VA, the founders of the Vaughan Furniture Company, who have seen at least two generations of their family attend Fork Union Military Academy. By the close of the 20th century, Vaughan Hall had ceased operating as a recreational center for cadets and housed the Commandant’s Department on the main floor and barracks rooms for the Battalion Staff upstairs. With the completion of Jacobson Hall in 2012, plans were made to renovate and restore the building to its original purpose as a social center for cadets. Major donors to the renovation project included Dr. and Mrs. Emerson Farley, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth B. Koeller, Ms. Marion Moon, and Mr. and Mrs. Steven W. Shelton. Much of the renovation labor was completed by Special Projects Manager Alex Grant (FUMA Class of 2004), with help from FUMA instructor Dave Mitchell, and alumni Sherwood Cosby ‘81 and his son Joshua Cosby ’19. The Carol Childress Social Center was rededicated at a ceremony during Alumni Weekend in May 2019.

In her remarks at the dedication, Mrs. Paige Pruett, Chair of the Board of Trustees and a major advocate for renovation project, described the social center’s importance in this way: “Frankly, the Academy unabashedly asks its young men to do more than their peers are doing—marching, living in barracks, and the like. At the same time, we ask them to leave behind creature comforts and many things that the boys would otherwise enjoy. This renovated Social Center reflects the view that we can have it both ways. We can ask our cadets to work harder, to do more and live with less in the barracks, but at the same time reward those who fulfill their obligations with a wonderful place to relax and socialize.” The social center is now once again a special place for FUMA cadets. It is one of the few spots on campus they can go to have a snack, hang out with friends, and relieve some stress. Cadet Khang Le, a second-year cadet from Vietnam, said, “The pool tables are my favorite addition. The Social Center overall has become a great place for the cadets to socialize during their free time. New snacks and drinks are great, too!”

Planned Giving

One of the major shifts the Academy would like to make in the next ten years is doubling the list of those who have committed a planned gift, securing the future of the Academy. We thank alumni, friends, parents, past parents, grandparents, and trustees who have made this commitment and guaranteed the resources the Academy needs to prepare the next generation of cadets for success.

“As a young boy I struggled learning how to read and by the time I was in 4th grade still not knowing my ABC’s, my parents sent me to Fork Union Military Academy. It was during my time at the Academy that I discovered I had dyslexia and dysgraphia. With the help of some patient and understanding teachers at Fork Union Military Academy, I finally learned how to read. I was encouraged and built confidence, which saved my life and helped shape me, allowing me to become successful in life. I am indebted to Fork Union Military Academy for helping me so much as a young man, I know the experience I had there allowed me to become the man I am today. My planned gift will help other cadets who are like I once was to receive a world class education based in Christian values.” - Gains Lott, ‘61 The Academy is thankful to Mr. Lott and for those listed below who recognize the importance of planned gifts to helping Fork Union educate develop and inspire young men. The individuals listed below are leaving a legacy though a planned gift that will help countless young men receive the most rewarding education. If you are interested in making a planned gift, please contact Tim Redden at (434) 842-4374 or reddent@fuma.org.

Gifts in Honor or Memory

The Academy is thankful for this very special type of gift. Supporters that recognize members of our Fork Union Family past and present, not only support the advancement of our mission, but also honor cherished loved ones, mentors, teachers and cadets that make the Academy what it is today. Below is a listing of those who were honored in this way during the 2018-2019 Fiscal year. This past year the Academy was saddened by the death of one of its beloved sons, a recent 2017 graduate, Mr. Jonathan Lee Walker. Mr. Walker was a leading scorer for the Academy lacrosse team his senior year and was serving in the Virginia National Guard at his time of death. His family continued to honor his memory by requesting gifts to the Academy’s Lacrosse program in lieu of flowers in his passing and by hosting the 1st Annual Jonny Walker Memorial Alumni Lacrosse Game. With over 23 gifts received in his name, the love for this excellent young man was felt by the Academy. We are grateful for all those who gave in memory of Mr. Jonathan Lee Walker, and for those who gave in honor or memory of a loved one.
