We forge devout, educated, honorable young men who are courageous.

Our cadets in leadership training often kick off the school year with a trip to Fort Pickett. This experience tests their camaraderie and hones their leadership skills, setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.

Letter from CAPT Mark Black

Dear Friends and Supporters of Fork Union Military Academy,

As we reflect on this past year, I am proud to share the success of our 125th Campaign. Through the generosity of our community, we have received 125 gifts and pledges, achieving 100 percent of our goal. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in this success, and for that, we are deeply grateful.

While we celebrate these accomplishments, our work continues. Our Academy stands at a pivotal moment, and the ongoing success of our cadets depends on the collective support of our alumni, families, and friends. This year, we face significant needs that will strengthen and sustain our facilities, programs, and day-to-day operations, ensuring our campus remains a place of excellence and opportunity for every cadet.

Together, we have already achieved incredible things. However, reaching our remaining goals requires the continued dedication of our community. Every gift, no matter the size, contributes directly to the future of our cadets and the legacy of Fork Union Military Academy. Your support allows us to build on our foundation, preserving our traditions while empowering the leaders of tomorrow.

As it is written in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Let us be inspired by these words to give generously and joyfully in support of Fork Union Military Academy’s mission.

I urge you to join us in this mission. Your contributions not only sustain our tradition of excellence but also pave the way for the leaders of tomorrow. Let us come together, inspired by our shared vision and dedication, to ensure Fork Union Military Academy thrives for generations to come.

Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment.

Sincerely,

Soli

Celebrating 125 Years: A Weekend to Remember

On October 15, 2023, Fork Union Military Academy marked a major milestone in its storied history—125 years of shaping young men into leaders of character. The anniversary weekend brought alumni, cadets, families, and friends together for three unforgettable days, blending time-honored traditions with new moments of celebration. This historic occasion reflected the Academy’s proud heritage while also looking forward to its future, as generations gathered to honor the school’s deeprooted values and evolving mission.

The festivities began on Friday, October 13, with an Alumni BBQ held in conjunction with the Prep football game. Alumni reconnected with old friends, current cadets mingled with former cadets, and families gathered to enjoy an evening of camaraderie. The crowd was energized by a live performance from Bennett Wales, Class of 2009, (pictured) whose soulful rock sound provided the perfect backdrop for the evening. The BBQ’s lively atmosphere transitioned into awe and excitement as a spectacular fireworks display lit up the sky, officially kicking off the weekend with a bang.

Saturday, October 14, started on a nostalgic note with the return of a beloved tradition—the historic Fork Union 4-Miler. Alumni, community members, and cadets came together to participate in the race, which was a hallmark event in years past. The race fostered a sense of connection, unity, and shared purpose, as participants pounded the pavement through the scenic Fork Union campus, bringing renewed community spirit to the grounds.

Later that day, the Academy paid tribute to its rich history with the Snead Hall and Memorial Hall Cornerstone Ceremony, honoring two iconic buildings that have been central to cadet life for decades.

The celebrations reached new heights that evening with a Gala at the Westin Richmond. It was an elegant affair, bringing together alumni, supporters, and friends of the Academy for a night of generosity and vision. The highlight of the evening came when Frank Brewster, Class of 1964, (pictured) took the stage to announce his remarkable $52 million planned gift to Fork Union—one of the largest in the school’s history. Brewster’s generosity also included an immediate donation of $75,000 for Access Scholarships, ensuring that more students will have the opportunity to attend Fork Union in the years to come.

The Gala also introduced other significant developments for the Academy’s future. Kendrick Ashton, Class of 1994 and member of the Board of Trustees, announced the

creation of the John Shuman Postgraduate Football Fund, named in honor of longtime football coach John Shuman, whose contributions to Fork Union’s legendary football program are immeasurable. This fund will provide support for future postgraduate football players to enroll at the Academy, ensuring that the football program continues to thrive.

Another momentous announcement was made by Jeff Jones, Class of 1986 and CEO of H&R Block, (pictured) who introduced the Faculty Professional Development Award. This endowed fund will help the Academy attract and retain top-tier educators, securing the quality of teaching for generations of cadets. The Gala, filled with moments of giving and gratitude, truly set the tone for the Academy’s bright future.

The culmination of the weekend came on Sunday, October 15, the Academy’s official founding day and the most highly anticipated event of the weekend. The day began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Alfred H. Koeller III Memorial Press Box, a gift given in memory of the late Ken Koeller, Class of 1952, and his son Alfred. In a touching moment, Nancy Koeller, (pictured) cut the ribbon, honoring both her late son and husband, and ensuring that their family’s legacy would live on at Fork Union Military Academy. This poignant ceremony set a reflective and heartfelt tone for the day.

The events continued with a Parade and the historic Change of Command Ceremony, marking a significant moment in Fork Union’s leadership transition. CAPT Mark Black was officially installed as the 12th president of Fork Union Military Academy, succeeding Colonel David Coggins. The pageantry and pride on display were moving, as alumni, current cadets, and families filled the campus to witness this symbolic passing of the torch. Among those in attendance was distinguished alumnus and former NFL star Anthony Castonzo, Class of 2007, who returned to campus to celebrate this milestone and help promote the newly established Shuman Postgraduate Fund.

Throughout the weekend, the campus was abuzz with excitement and reverence for the Academy’s past, present, and future. From the BBQ and fireworks on Friday night to the Gala and Sunday’s momentous ceremonies, every event was infused with pride in Fork Union’s enduring legacy. The weekend served as a powerful reminder of the Academy’s impact over the last 125 years and the promise it holds for the future.

With every gathering, announcement, and tribute, Fork Union not only celebrated 125 years of excellence but also laid the foundation for its continued influence on generations of cadets. The weekend’s events reaffirmed the Academy’s mission of developing men of character, setting the stage for the next chapter of its remarkable journey.

Join the Alumni Guard!

Preserving Tradition, Ensuring the Future

Fork Union Military Academy is excited to introduce the Alumni Guard, our new recurring gift program designed to honor our legacy and secure the future for generations of cadets to come.

By making a recurring gift of just $20 or more per month, you’ll become a valued member of the Alumni Guard. Members receive a special token of appreciation from the Academy as a symbol of our gratitude.

Additionally, those whose contributions total $5,000 or more will be invited to exclusive gatherings throughout the year with our President, CAPT Mark Black.

Join us in shaping the future of Fork Union Military Academy while preserving the traditions that make us great.

Become a member today and make a difference!

Ways to Support Fork Union Military Academy:

Please consider --

Giving to the Academy Fund:

The Annual Appeal is an important component to the ongoing operations of the Fork Union Military Academy. By making a gift through the Annual Appeal, you are ensuring the continued health of our school and the continuation of our mission to forge devout, educated, honorable young men that are courageous. These gifts are fully tax deductible as allowed by law.

Joining the Alumni Guard:

Preserving tradition, ensuring the future.

A recurring monthly gift of at least $20.00 per month allows you to become a member of the Alumni Guard. You will receive a token of the Academy’s appreciation, and should you give a gift totaling $5,000 you will be invited to special gatherings throughout the year with our President, CAPT Mark Black.

A Planned Gift:

Planned giving is an important way through which you can provide support to the Academy. Through planned giving programs you can work with us to develop a strategic gift program through your estate plan. A planned gift can be a simple bequest or a complex charitable trust. They are extremely important to the non-profit organization for which they are designed and can be beneficial as well to the donor and his/her heirs. If you are interested in discussing a planned gift to Fork Union Military Academy, please contact our Advancement Office: (434) 842-4207.

Types of Gifts:

• Bequests:

• Leave certain assests to the Academy in your will.

• Bequests enable us to plan for future conservation projects and activities. Anyone considering such a gift should consult with the Advancement Staff at (434) 842-4207.

• Charitable IRA Rollover:

• Individuals who are at least 70.5 years old may transfer up to $100,000 from a traditional or Roth IRA to a 501(c)3 public charity. This can be a benefit if you have a highly funded IRA.

• Funds assist the Academy with meeting immediate operational priorities, or you may direct funds for Endowment.

• Charitable Remainder Trust:

• Place your assests in a trust, managed by an outside trustee. The trust pays you income during your lifetime, after which the remaining assets are donated to Fork Union Military Academy.

• Trust proceeds support the Academy and enable us to incorporate your donation into immediate operational priorities, or other projects that may be directed by you.

• Charitable Lead Trust:

• Annual income from a trust is paid to Fork Union Military Academy during your lifetime, after which the remaining principle is given to a noncharitable beneficiary (or beneficiaries) such as children.

• Annual payments from the trust can support programs as you so direct.

THANK YOU!
