Fork Union Military Academy
President CAPT Mark E. Black and his wife, Kim, are welcomed by the Arch of Sabres at the 2025 Military Ball, held for the first time in the Guy E. Beatty Library.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Fork Union Military Academy,
Each year at Fork Union Military Academy, we continue the sacred work of forging young men: men of faith, honor, discipline, and purpose. The word forge is deliberate. Iron cannot be molded by chance; it must be shaped through fire, pressure, and purpose. The same is true for the young men entrusted to us. Here at Fork Union, we forge character that endures.
This past year was another testament to what our community can achieve together. Through your generosity, the Academy received 835 gifts totaling $2,891,112, including 75 planned gifts, 23 gifts in kind, and the continued growth of our recurring gift programs, the Alumni Guard and Family Fellowship, which welcomed 29 new members this year. These acts of faith and commitment sustain the Academy’s mission and ensure that generations of cadets will continue to be refined by the same values that have shaped so many before them.

Our work, however, is far from finished. Each gift, large or small, is a vital link in the chain that connects our proud history to our bright future. Giving back to Fork Union is more than an act of generosity; it is an affirmation of belief in what this institution stands for. It is a commitment to the formation of devout, honorable young men who will serve their families, communities, and nation with courage and integrity.
As Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Your support sharpens our mission, fuels our purpose, and strengthens every cadet who walks these grounds. Together, we ensure that the fire of this Academy never dims.
On behalf of our cadets, faculty, and staff, thank you for believing in Fork Union Military Academy, thank you for giving back, for giving faithfully, and for giving forward.
Sincerely,

M.E. Black
CAPTAIN, USN (Ret.) President Fork Union Military Academy
Soli Deo gloria

Fork Union Military Academy is a place where history and progress walk side by side. Every corner of our campus holds a story, and new chapters continue to be written through projects that celebrate our traditions while creating spaces for the next generation of cadets to learn, grow, and lead.
“The new updates around campus reflect an exciting time at Fork Union Military Academy,” said CAPT Mark Black, USN (Ret.), President of the Academy. “Renewal is coming, and it’s change that will strengthen our mission, elevate the cadet experience, and showcase the best of who we are.”
The Gus Lacy Track is once again alive with the sound of footsteps and determination. After months of construction, the championship-quality, eight-lane black surface became fully operational in October, featuring fresh paint and upgraded facilities that match the caliber of the athletes who train here.
The new throwers’ area, the final phase of the project, is set to be completed in late fall or early spring, rounding out a facility that stands ready to host top-tier competitions and community events.

More than just a renovation, this project represents an investment in the health, performance, and pride of our cadets. With every stride taken on the new track, our student-athletes continue Fork Union’s long legacy of excellence, perseverance, and unity.

At the heart of campus, the Don and Judy Bardell Veranda now welcomes cadets, faculty, and families to gather, reflect, and connect. Completed in late September, the veranda was officially dedicated during Parents Weekend, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by parents, staff, and guests.
The project was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Darren Bardell, Class of 1985, who named the veranda in honor of his parents, Don and Judy Bardell, for the many sacrifices they made to give him the
opportunity to pursue a Fork Union education. This beautiful new addition to the Wicker Science Building provides a welcoming outdoor space for studying, relaxing, and fellowship, serving as both a symbol of gratitude and a gathering place that strengthens our sense of community.
Perhaps the most visible transformation came from what is no longer standing. This summer, Fork Union said farewell to the Middle School Barracks, a building that stood since 1940 and once housed cadets as young as first grade. Though its doors closed in 2015, the structure remained a quiet reminder of the Academy’s history for nearly a decade.

After careful evaluation, it was determined that the barracks could not be viably renovated. In a decision grounded in responsible stewardship, demolition began on August 19, clearing the way for new possibilities. As the walls came down, Charlie Company, the Academy’s youngest cadets, stood watching, symbolizing the continuity between past and future.
The demolition has opened our campus, creating new sightlines and a sense of openness that reflects both progress and promise.
As this historic space awaits its next purpose, Fork Union will work with its Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and the Alumni Association to determine what comes next, continuing our shared commitment to growth, excellence, and the enduring spirit of the Academy.

Ann Alleva Taylor continues to lead Fork Union Military Academy’s Advancement Office with vision and enthusiasm, building on her appointment as Director of Advancement in July 2024. In her role, Taylor oversees all fundraising, alumni relations, and marketing initiatives that support the Academy’s mission and strategic priorities.
Since joining Fork Union, Taylor has helped strengthen donor engagement and expand philanthropic support through strategic campaigns, community partnerships, and dynamic storytelling that celebrates the Academy’s legacy and impact.
Bringing more than three decades of experience in marketing and philanthropy, Taylor has a proven record of success in creating motivational, change-making campaigns. Her leadership in strategic advancement planning has contributed to more than $11 million raised for regional 501(c)(3) organizations, while her marketing expertise has driven over $70 million in sales across nonprofit and corporate sectors.

Fork Union at a glance

Over the past decade, only thirty Fork Union Military Academy donors have taken advantage of matching gift programs, leaving significant funds on the table. Nationally, an estimated $4–$7 billion in matching funds go unclaimed each year because donors are unaware or forget to submit a request.

For many Fork Union Military Academy alumni, the Academy remains a place of lifelong influence. For Marcus Billingslea and 2LT Christopher Merlo, it’s also become the place where their professional journeys began. Both graduates of the Class of 2021, the two have returned to the Academy that helped shape their discipline and purpose, now paying it forward to the next generation of Blue Devils.
Billingslea, a Palmyra, Virginia native and the Class of 2021 Salutatorian, joins the faculty as a Geometry instructor after graduating from Morehouse College. His return to Fork Union feels like a homecoming, not just to the classrooms where he once studied, but to the values and mentors who inspired his pursuit of excellence.
Merlo, a commissioned Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and Tufts University graduate, has also found his way back to Fork Union. He has served in both the classroom and the Commandant’s Department, teaching Chemistry during Term 1 and currently leading Honors Algebra during Term 2. His dual role allows him to bridge academics and leadership by instilling in cadets the same balance of discipline and intellect that guided his own success.

For COL Brian Bodine, Fork Union’s Academic Dean, watching Marcus and Chris return has been a full-circle moment of pride and purpose. Bodine taught both alumni during their cadet years and later had the honor of hiring them to join the faculty.

“It’s been an absolute blast to have these two fine young men come back to FUMA and help meet the needs of the Corps,” said Bodine. “Both were excellent students and strong contributors in athletics, Marcus as a receiver and backup quarterback on the Jr. Prep football team, and now they’re giving back to the same community that helped shape them. When I hear them tell cadets, ‘When I was here, we did it this way,’ it makes me swell with pride. They understand our culture and embody the reason why we do things the way we do.”
Bodine added that the Academy’s culture is unlike any other, built on standards that challenge and elevate young men. Having alumni like Marcus and Chris return to model those standards for current cadets, he says, is “nothing short of great.”
For both Billingslea and Merlo, returning to Fork Union was about more than nostalgia, it was about purpose. Each credits the Academy’s structure, mentorship, and emphasis on character as cornerstones in their personal and academic development.
After earning his degree from Morehouse College, Billingslea felt called to education and mentorship. The opportunity to return to his alma mater offered the perfect blend of both. In the classroom, he strives to make Geometry approachable and relevant, often relating lessons to real-world problem-solving and perseverance all qualities he honed as a cadet himself.

Merlo’s journey took him through the rigorous academic and military programs at Tufts University, where his leadership training and commitment to service deepened. His decision to return to Fork Union was grounded in gratitude and the desire to serve as a role model for cadets walking the same halls he once did.

“This place built me into who I am,” said Merlo. “Now I get to help cadets find their own sense of direction and confidence, whether in the classroom or as part of the Corps.”
As the next generation of cadets march across the same campus they once called home, Billingslea and Merlo stand as living reminders of what a Fork Union education can produce. Their return symbolizes the Academy’s lasting influence, an institution where lessons of faith, discipline, respect, and leadership continue to echo long after graduation.
Their paths, from cadets to college graduates, and now to educators, reflect the power of the Academy’s mission to “develop, educate, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, military environment.” In coming full circle, both alumni have shown that the true measure of success isn’t just where life takes you, but what you give back along the way.
“We’re proof that Fork Union’s values last,” said Billingslea. “To come back and live those out every day, it’s an honor.”
This 2024-2025 Annual Report of Gifts has been prepared by the Academy’s Advancement Office. Now in its second year, the Alumni Guard & Family Fellowship unites alumni, parents, families, and friends through the power of recurring giving.
Created to honor Fork Union’s proud legacy while securing its future, this program allows supporters to make a lasting impact, one monthly gift at a time.
By contributing $20 or more per month, members help sustain our mission of developing educated, devout, and honorable young men. Each receives a special token of appreciation as a symbol of gratitude and shared commitment to the values that define Fork Union.

Fork Union Military Academy will forever miss Colonel Scott Krogh, who passed away unexpectedly on August 10, 2024, at the young age of 39.
His presence filled our campus with steady dedication, compassion, and quiet strength, qualities that left an indelible mark on every student, colleague, and family he encountered. To say we miss Scott feels inadequate. The Academy misses him in ways words cannot capture, because Scott wasn’t simply part of Fork Union. He was woven into its very fabric.
Scott began his career at the Academy in 2008 and quickly became an essential part of the Fork Union family. By 2011, he was named Director of Information Technology, a role in which his technical expertise and problem-solving spirit supported every corner of campus. Over the years, he wore many hats, from teaching in the Middle School to serving as Deputy Chief of Staff and later Director of Operations. He also coached football, tennis, and golf. Scott truly did it all, and he did it with humility and heart.

For more than a decade, Scott poured his heart and soul into his work, living out the Academy’s mission of developing educated, honorable young men. Whether he was helping a cadet navigate a challenge, comforting a parent over the phone, or offering an encouraging word in passing, Scott led with empathy and sincerity. He was Fork Union Military Academy.
Those who knew him remember his easy smile, quick wit, and unmatched loyalty to his family, his friends, his students, and his beloved Carolina Panthers. His conversations could shift effortlessly from academics and student success to football stats or the latest film recommendation. To Scott, relationships were everything, and he treated each one with care and authenticity.
The impact Scott left on Fork Union continues to live on in the students he mentored, the colleagues he inspired, and the community that loved him so dearly. Scott’s legacy also continues to inspire those who give in his memory. Contributions made in honor of Colonel Krogh celebrate the compassion and dedication he showed every day and ensure that his life’s work, helping young men reach their fullest potential, carries forward.
Though he is no longer with us, his spirit remains deeply rooted in this place, on the field where he coached, the hallways he walked, and the lives he touched. Through the generosity of those who remember him, Scott’s light continues to guide the next generation of Fork Union men.

Forty-one cadets received their high school diplomas during the 127th Commencement Ceremony at Fork Union Military Academy on Friday, May 23. It was a beautiful morning for an outdoor celebration at Stadium Field, with the sun shining as brightly as the smiles on the faces of proud families, friends, and alumni.
Pastor Dave Vogt, of Antioch Baptist Church in Scottsville, Virginia, delivered the 2025 Commencement Address. Pastor Vogt has been preaching since the age of 17 and has faithfully served as Antioch’s pastor since 2014. A devoted husband to his wife Laura and father to their six children, he is passionate about sharing the love of Jesus and staying active in his community. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, sports, studying the Bible, and traveling.
Niv Patel, the William E. Hatcher Valedictorian, delivered an outstanding Valedictory Address. Reflecting on fond memories, Patel expressed his heartfelt thanks to his family, faculty, and staff for their guidance and support, and most importantly, he shared gratitude for his fellow classmates in the Class of 2025.

Patel (pictured), the son of Pritul and Sweety Patel of Suffolk, Virginia, has been a cadet at Fork Union since the eighth grade. He graduates with the highest academic distinction, holding a cumulative GPA of 4.72, and will attend North Carolina State University in the fall to pursue studies in a STEM field.
Following the Valedictory Address, Fork Union Military Academy proudly announced its Honor Graduates.
To earn this distinction, cadets must have completed at least two years at the Academy between grades 9–12, achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher during their senior year, and demonstrated exceptional conduct and character.

Daley Adams, son of Kathryn Adams of Herndon, Virginia, joined the Academy in the tenth grade and has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.59. Daley has started at Virginia Tech, where he studies Water Resource Management as a member of the Corps of Cadets.
Joseph Athey, son of David and Vanessa Athey of Woodsboro, Maryland, joined the Academy in the ninth grade and has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.73. Joseph attends Virginia Tech, where he studies Mechanical Engineering.

Ian Egbert, son of Mark and Janine Egbert of Englewood, Florida, joined the Academy in the tenth grade and has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.74. Ian attends the University of South Florida, where he studies Business Management.
Miles Graybill, son of John Graybill and Tracy Wang of Heath, Texas, joined the Academy in the eighth grade and has earned a cumulative GPA of 4.40. Miles attends Texas A&M University, where he studies History as a member of the Corps of Cadets.

Sean Hurley, son of John and Erin Hurley of Scottsville, Virginia. Sean joined the Academy in the eighth grade and has earned a cumulative GPA of 4.23. Sean attends James Madison University, where he studies Engineering.
Malachi Walsh, son of Chris and Samantha Walsh of Genesee, Idaho, joined the Academy in the eleventh grade and has earned a cumulative GPA of 4.12. Malachi attends Lewis-Clark State College, where he has begun his Pre-Med path as a member of the Track and CrossCountry team.

Nicholas Willis, son of Michelle Adelstein of Ellicott City, Maryland, joined the Academy in the tenth grade and has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.74. Nicholas attends Mount Saint Mary’s University, where he studies Criminal Justice.
Fork Union Military Academy is proud to report that 100% of the Class of 2025 was accepted to college. The 41 graduates received offers of admission to 112 different colleges and universities, earning a combined total of over $4 million in merit and athletic scholarships.
Each spring, Fork Union Military Academy opens its gates to generations of proud alumni returning to the place that shaped their lives. This year’s Alumni Weekend 2025 was no exception. It was an inspiring testament to the enduring bond that unites cadets past and present.
From the warm welcome at Friday’s BBQ on Pruitt Lake to the spirited performances by the Corps of Cadets, the weekend radiated the pride, tradition, and camaraderie that define the Fork Union experience. Laughter and familiar handshakes echoed across campus as alumni from every decade reconnected with old friends, shared stories, and witnessed the next generation of cadets carrying on the Academy’s legacy.
Saturday brought a full slate of activities celebrating both competition and community, including the everpopular Golf and Cornhole Tournaments and the Retired Faculty Luncheon, which reunited alumni with beloved mentors. The day concluded with an evening of reflection and recognition at the Alumni Dinner, where the Academy honored Dr. Josa Mera, Class of 1975, with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dr. Mera made history as the first international cadet to serve as Battalion Commander. His decades of service to the Academy, as a member of both the Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees, stand as a lasting example of leadership and loyalty.
Among the weekend’s most touching moments was the dedication of a new trophy case in Beatty Library honoring longtime educator and Chess Club advisor Chris Nothnagle. The display, filled with memorabilia and memories, pays tribute to his lasting influence on generations of cadets.
Despite a rainy Sunday morning, alumni gathered in Wicker Chapel for a moving veterans’ ceremony, followed by class photos and the Alumni Parade on Stadium Field, where the skies cleared just in time for the Class of 1975 to take their proud march as the 50th Reunion Class.
“What makes Alumni Weekend so meaningful is seeing how strong the bond remains between our cadets and their Academy, no matter how many years have passed,” said Ann Taylor, Director of Advancement.
“It’s not just a weekend of events; it’s a celebration of shared history, lifelong friendships, and the values that unite our community.”
As the Academy reflects on another successful Alumni Weekend, the spirit of connection continues to shine brightly across the Fork Union family.
next year’s alUMni Weekend is set For May 1–3, 2026, and the invitation is already open to all Who call Fork Union hoMe.
Please consider --
The Annual Appeal is an important component to the ongoing operations of the Fork Union Military Academy. By making a gift through the Annual Appeal, you are ensuring the continued health of our school and the continuation of our mission to forge devout, educated, honorable young men that are courageous. These gifts are fully tax deductible as allowed by law.
Joining the Alumni Guard:
Preserving tradition, ensuring the future.
A recurring monthly gift of at least $20.00 per month allows you to become a member of the Alumni Guard. You will receive a token of the Academy’s appreciation, and should you give a gift totaling $5,000 you will be invited to special gatherings throughout the year with our President, CAPT Mark Black.
A Planned Gift:
Planned giving is an important way through which you can provide support to the Academy. Through planned giving programs you can work with us to develop a strategic gift program through your estate plan. A planned gift can be a simple bequest or a complex charitable trust. They are extremely important to the non-profit organization for which they are designed and can be beneficial as well to the donor and his/her heirs. If you are interested in discussing a planned gift to Fork Union Military Academy, please contact our Advancement Office: (434) 842-4207.
• Bequests:
• Leave certain assests to the Academy in your will.
• Bequests enable us to plan for future conservation projects and activities. Anyone considering such a gift should consult with the Advancement Staff at (434) 842-4207.
• Charitable IRA Rollover:
• Individuals who are at least 70.5 years old may transfer up to $100,000 from a traditional or Roth IRA to a 501(c)3 public charity. This can be a benefit if you have a highly funded IRA.
• Funds assist the Academy with meeting immediate operational priorities, or you may direct funds for Endowment.
• Charitable Remainder Trust:
• Place your assests in a trust, managed by an outside trustee. The trust pays you income during your lifetime, after which the remaining assets are donated to Fork Union Military Academy.
• Trust proceeds support the Academy and enable us to incorporate your donation into immediate operational priorities, or other projects that may be directed by you.
• Charitable Lead Trust:
• Annual income from a trust is paid to Fork Union Military Academy during your lifetime, after which the remaining principle is given to a noncharitable beneficiary (or beneficiaries) such as children.
• Annual payments from the trust can support programs as you so direct.
