Manager’s Report by Emma Gore

emmag@foresthillscc.net

Dear Members of Forest Hills Country Club, Brr, it’s cold outside! The sudden drop in temperature has taken us all by surprise this year. It feels like just yesterday that I was writing my last article, and we were basking in 80-degree weather. Now, we find ourselves yearning for the warmth and coziness that the holiday season brings – with your favorite sweaters, hot cocoa, and nights spent by the crackling fire. Speaking of the holidays, our dedicated Food and Beverage Team is hard at work preparing delectable meals for the upcoming season. Don’t miss out on our Thanksgiving To-Go Orders (hurry, the deadline to order is November 8th!), Breakfast and Brunch with Santa, the Ladies Holiday Boutique, the Family Holiday Dinner, and our convenient Holiday To-Go Orders. Be sure to sign up for all these upcoming events early, as they tend to sell out quickly. Reflecting on the past month, I want to extend a heartfelt shoutout to our exceptional team for their outstanding work on several Club events. The Seafood Boil was a resounding success, and the weather for this outdoor event could not have been more perfect. I’d also like to mention the Brook and Bull Wine Dinner; though one of our ‘lower attended’ Wine Dinners of the year, it made for a more intimate dinner that all who attended enjoyed. And let’s not forget the Haunted Autumn Extravaganza! This event is a personal favorite of mine, and the dedication and teamwork displayed across all departments are truly remarkable. From our horticulture team decorating the front entrance to the spooky scenes set up by the F&B team, the haunted hayride experience facilitated by the grounds team, the creative dessert displays handcrafted by the maintenance team, the culinary team’s delectable meal, and the efficient clean up by the Housekeeping and F&B team, is a testament to the incredible collaboration that takes place here. Regrettably, I had to miss the event this year due to a business management course at Michigan State University. I was there to fulfill the last requirement needed for my eligibility to sit for the Certified Club Managers exam in January. Despite my absence, I received numerous photos and accolades from all of you.

In exciting project news, I am delighted to announce that the Championship Course Better Billy Bunker Project has been completed on budget and ahead of schedule. Hole #16 is also progressing well, with only a minor one-week delay due to weather. Our next step in this project is to pour the rerouted cart path and follow it up with fresh sod. If you haven’t had a chance to see the newly expanded tees up close, I highly recommend doing so in the upcoming weeks; the size increase is truly impressive. Our next construction project on the horizon is the pond to creek conversion for phase 2 of “The Creek Project”. You may have already noticed the tree removal work in preparation for this project’s start date. During the second week of November, our contractor will break the dam of the pond to initiate drainage and allow the pond’s muck to begin drying out. Rumor has it that some are already taking bets on how many snakes may be uncovered during this process. After breaking the dam, a channel will be created to facilitate water drainage from precipitation. Large pieces of concrete will be arranged as aesthetically as possible, though they won’t be removed from the site until the haul road is established behind Hole #18 tees, once the project officially begins during Thanksgiving week. For safety purposes, a construction fence will be set up around the pond during this period, so please exercise caution in this area. We look forward to keeping you updated on the project progress as we begin construction. See you around the Club soon!

Have Exciting News To Share? We encourage our members to share with us the interesting and exciting things happening in your lives! Please send your details to Ava Reynolds at avar@foresthillscc.net. We will do our very best to include your information in our upcoming newsletter. The deadline is always the 20th of the month.

If you come across this number and it happens to be yours, contact Ava at avar@foresthillscc.net to redeem a $100 Gift Certificate toward your next food and beverage purchase.

Notes from the Board Chair by Charles Nance

chnance@sbcglobal.net

Fellow Club Members, The Board of Directors conducts an annual work session to assess our progress as a Club towards fulfilling our Mission. As a reminder, Our Mission Statement is as follows: Forest Hills Country Club is dedicated to being the Family Club of Choice by enriching the lives of its members and their families through exceptional recreational, social, and dining offerings in a private club environment. At our annual “retreat” we review our strengths and weaknesses as a Club and reflect on how we’re doing. That review leads to a discussion on what, if any, changes in focus and direction are needed. Our meeting, held the last Thursday in October, was, in my opinion very successful. Our assessment of how we’ve done this year in fulfilling our Mission offered insights into what we’ll be budgeting and planning for in the coming year. We agreed that the areas that were the most challenging for the Club at our 2022 Retreat, have been improved. Last year, we determined that we had three very important opportunities for improvement in 2023. Improving our Food and Beverage operations to improve the quality and consistency of both the food and service was the most important challenge for this year. Continual monitoring of Club operating costs was also considered very important. Upgrading the conditions of our Golf Courses and physical assets were additional areas of emphasis. At this year’s meeting, we agreed that we’ve made significant progress in all three of these key performance areas. We acknowledged that, while progress has been made, there is still work to do to achieve the excellence that our members deserve in all areas of the Club. Examples of intentional changes we’ve undergone in these areas are plentiful. The departmental leadership positions in the Food and Beverage Department have been upgraded with the hiring of Chef Michael, and additions this coming month of a new Food and Beverage Director and Banquet Events Manager. As these leaders work to improve performance of their teams, we look forward to an improved member dining experience in all our food and beverage outlets. Additional staff and focus on course condition improvements have led to improved playing conditions on our Golf Courses. In the financial management area, there has been significant focus on cost control and the Capital spending year to date is in line with our plan. For this coming year, the Board has set goals, which will be published after finalization of the wording and approval at our November Meeting. The goals focus on four key areas: 1) delivering the Member Experiences that you deserve; 2) management of our physical assets; 3) financial performance; and 4) staff development. The Board Goals will be used in development of the goals for the Board Committees, the goals for the COO, and the goals for the entire Management Team. I’m very appreciative of the work involved in our recent meeting by both our Management Team and the Board. I believe we have a strong understanding of our opportunities for improvement in the coming year. We are looking forward to a great year in which our budgeting, and improved Member Experience is driven by the priorities and challenges identified at our meeting. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Event Recaps by Kristen Chamberlain

kristenc@foresthillscc.net

I distinctly remember during my interview process hearing about “Member Events”, and that part of my job duties would be to plan and execute these events for our members. With no club experience, coming from running wedding venues, I really didn’t understand exactly what that meant. Now, after having five under my belt and planning many more upcoming, these member events have become one of my favorite parts of this job. From reading surveys from past events and looking for ways to improve, to creating more activities and unique features for our events, I treat each event as if it’s one of my personal parties! Nothing makes me happier than seeing a room full of people enjoying themselves and hearing things like “This is the best event we’ve had!”. It just brings me joy knowing I played a role in creating forever memories for our wonderful families here! Of course, I wouldn’t be able to create these memorable events without the amazing staff here. The teamwork and behindthe-scenes planning to have successful events is very thorough and time-intensive. I’m so thankful to have a solid core of people that make Forest Hills the Family Club of Choice! Dads, make sure you sign up for our Father-Daughter Candyland Dance on November 17th. You don’t want to miss this!! Don’t forget to sign up for Breakfast and Brunch with Santa, the times are filling up fast!

amy.jung@att.net

Another Championship Nine Hole Ladies season is in the books. We closed the season in Barbie style thanks to the creativity of Kathy Muschick, Krista Signorelli and Angie Walsh. Even the guys in the Pro Shop dressed for the theme. Our winners were: Meredith McVehil, Patti MacDoniels, Cheryl Mohan, and Amy Larson!

Of course, all good things must come to an end, and it is bittersweet to see Rachel Schaaf and Paula Ruggeri step down from their leadership roles. We cannot thank them enough for putting their time and talent into chairing the Ladies Nine Hole Championship Group. Rachel and Paula are passing the torch to Kathy Dorch (Chairperson) and Amy Jung (Co-Chairperson). Please feel free to reach out to Kathy or Amy if there are any questions or suggestions for next year. Volunteer opportunities are still available for any members that would like to get involved and help out next year. The Nine Hole Ladies would also like to thank Nick Jones and the rest of the Pro Shop staff for their help and participation this year. None of our prize days or events would be successful or fun without them. Even though the season has ended, please feel free to sign up for play on Thursday mornings. Scores will be posted on GHIN until November 14th. Banter About The Course All anyone can talk about is how much we are looking forward to the next season. Make sure to encourage all lady golf members to join our fun group!

18 Hole Ladies Golf News by Jan Smith

The 18 Hole Ladies wrapped up the 2023 season with some great events. The 2nd Annual Solheim Cup saw 24 women split into Team USA, captained by Lisa Schad, and Team Europe, captained by Cathy Moffit. The two-day event had a great format enjoyed by all, and in the end, Team Europe was the winner. Congrats! Match Play tournaments finished up in October as well as the Beat the Pro event. October 17th was our Autumn Classic and Closing Meeting. The format this year was an 18 hole par 3 scramble! It was a very unique way to play some of the holes! A fabulous fall-themed lunch was enjoyed by the 32 women who attended. Afterwards, we had our closing meeting for the season. The proposal of increasing our yearly dues was presented during new business. The increase will help fund our events which regularly go over budget. 2024 dues for the 18 hole Ladies Women’s Golf Association will be $125 was passed with a majority vote. A big thank you to the 2023 Executive Committee. We appreciate your willingness to serve and all your hard work for the benefit of our league. You all have our gratitude! Grounds Update by Scott Reynolds, GSC

scottr@foresthillscc.net

Driving Range Tee It is that time of year when warm season grasses such as Zoysia and Tahoma 31 Bermuda (Driving Range Tee) stop growing. Just like every year in the past, whether it be Zoysia grass or Bermuda, we need to restrict the usage and rely solely on the all-purpose mats. The warm season grasses go dormant and cannot fill in the divots taken off the grass. This winter the driving range tee, due to the Bermuda we installed, will need to be covered with specially designed turf covers. The covers have been installed. Covers will remain until we evaluate temperatures in March. This will pose no unusual inconvenience to you because we have always been off the tee top during the winter season. The only change will be the tee top being covered. #18 Cart Path A few weeks ago, we had a section of cart path redone at the bottom of #18. This area isn’t finished yet. We are waiting to have a full pallet of sod to be installed to finish this project. Ordering 10 pieces of sod is way too expensive, that is why we order in full pallet quantities. We have some areas needing to be prepped for sod that we will get to in the very near future. Once we get these areas ready, we will finish sodding #18 cart path. #16 Tee Renovation This project is moving along well. The grading is finished and will be ready for sod once the concrete cart path is poured. We are very happy with the goals we tried to achieve by doing this project. The goals were to create more teeing area for each color tee marker and to rebuild the tees to have more sunlight throughout the winter season. The total teeing area has increased from 3,200 sq ft to 8,000 sq ft. The tees are set up well to play the golf hole. The cart path was flipped to the opposite side of the tees allowing us to put the path in shaded real estate opening the tee surface to be placed in sunny real estate. Here are a few pictures of the construction as it nears finish shaping. #17 Pond to Creek Conversion Last week we met with our creek contractor. The project is still on schedule to begin around Thanksgiving. We have asked the contractor to start draining the pond sooner than the week prior to the start date. Next week, we anticipate them coming in to break the dam at the pond which will remove the water. This will allow the silt in the pond to have more time to dry out prior to being removed. We will still have a lot of work ahead of us as we anticipate sodding to begin for this project in March. That is the time the sod farm will open for the season to supply us sod. TruPin Technology The Grounds Maintenance staff started using the TruPin device last week. This device allows our “Set Up” staff member to accurately download the hole location for the day that will be sent to your cart. Now the distance will reflect to the pin, not the center of the green. Please let the Pro Shop know if there are discrepancies in what you feel is accurate so we can refine the system if necessary. We look forward to you enjoying these improvements once completed.

Message From The Pro by Jimmy Bals, PGA

jimmyb@foresthillscc.net

I recently returned from a PGA Ambassador Program that granted me the opportunity to travel to Scotland with other Club Professionals from around the country. It was a chance to play some fantastic golf courses and share ideas among the group. The golf courses included Royal Troon, the site of the 2024 Open, Dundonald Links and Gleneagles Golf Club. I mention this for a few different reasons. One, having made a couple of connections at Dundonald and Gleneagles, I would like to personally let them know when we have Forest Hills members coming to their club. Secondly, I would hope to provide a little insight prior to your travel. And lastly, the Ambassador Program asks us to identify where our members travel. Whether that be to Scotland, or resorts within the US and around the world. A quick email letting me know the location and how many players traveling would be appreciated. Moving forward, our Golf Professional staff hopes to put together some member trips. If that is of interest to you, please let me know. We will send out club-wide emails when that time comes, however, if there is a particular group you prefer to travel with, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate. There has not been much travel among our staff, so we are open to recommendations. Travel was stalled during Covid-19 and shortly thereafter, thus, many known golf destinations are heavily booked further out than normal. Making plans well in advance is now the standard. The golf course is in great shape and the Golf Shop is full of new products for fall and winter. There is no better place to get away from the daily hustle and bustle, so make time to come enjoy your great golf facility right here. Whether it be for 18 holes, 9 holes, a quick 9 on The Valley, or a short practice session. A little time outdoors is always refreshing. And as a reminder, there is still over $22,000 of credit on the books that must be used by December 31st. Don’t be the one that forgets to use it.

Senior Men’s Golf Association by James Harf

The senior men closed a successful 2023 season with a three-man scramble on October 11th. Three men entered the final event with an opportunity to emerge as Senior Championship Golfer of the year, based on their play over the entire season: John Sherman, Ed Mayuga and Tom Dean. Tom Dean emerged as the winner with his stellar play in the final event. Congratulations, Tom! One other event, Regular Play, was held since the last newsletter, which was won by Pete Geer. John deGreck had the closest to the pin on Hole #16.

Twenty-seven senior men events were held throughout the 2023 season, with both regular play and special events characterizing the weekly format. Congratulations are in order for this past year’s President, John DeGreck, and Secretary/ Treasurer, Pat Hopkins. They worked closely with JT Tierney to organize and deliver the 27 events, despite fighting the elements on many occasions. We look forward to an even better year in 2024!

Hospitality Students Visit FHCC! Last month, of group of Hospitality Students from Missouri State University, who have an interest in working in the Private Club field, had the opportunity to tour and visit some of the best Clubs in the state of Missouri. On Tuesday, October 17th, they arrived at Old Warson Country Club for a tour and lunch and then departed to St. Louis Country Club for their second tour of the day. Afterwards they headed to Forest Hills Country Club for a tour and dinner followed by an evening of Bocce instruction and play. The St. Louis Chapter of the Club Management Association of America set the students up with accommodations at the Missouri Athletic Club Downtown. On the morning of their second day the group got a tour of the MAC Downtown followed by a light breakfast. where then went to Norwood Hills Country Club for a tour & lunch. Their third tour of the day was capped off at Westwood Country Club! Forest Hills was happy to participate in the field trip and the students very much enjoyed their experience.

Fall Bocce Brought Fun, Camaraderie & New Club Champions! by Ryan Schaben The first ever Fall Bocce Leagues at the Club set off to build on the fun and competition from the Spring Leagues. Just like the Spring Leagues, these were six-week leagues, with a 7th week for playoffs and championships, that lasted from September to mid-October. The leagues were held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings with each league having 8 teams. We had over 225 members in the Fall League compared to 210 in the Spring League. Thank you to everyone who joined and helped make the leagues a huge success this year! At the end of the season, every team was ranked, and the top four teams from each league made it to the playoffs on Wednesday, October 18th. After a full night of games, the top two teams from each league advanced to the Championship, which was held on Sunday, October 22nd. In the Wednesday Night League, Teams La Bocce Vita, DeBOCCEry, Alti Rulli, and Free & Easy all made it to playoffs, but it was the 4th ranked Team, DeBOCCEry with the underdog story, beating the spring overall champions, to advance in the first round and then ultimately going all the way and winning the Championship! Congratulations to Team Captain, Chrissy Parr. In the Thursday Night League we had Team Just Here for the Cocktails, Billionaire Ballers, Boccelicious, and the Lawn Rangers qualify for playoffs. The league’s top-ranked team, Billionaire Ballers had a strong showing throughout playoffs and walked away with the Thursday Championship Title! Congratulations to Team Captain, Ann Fritz. The two champions then faced off for the title of overall FHCC Fall Bocce Champions. It was a great showing from both sides but it was the Thursday champs, Billionaire Ballers, who continued their dominance and were crowned the overall Fall Bocce Champions!
