Club News &
Reminders
We hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather so far this summer! We are looking forward to a fun-filled 4th of July weekend. Our dedicated team has been working hard to craft an unforgettable event for you and your families.
Before I jump into the exciting updates happening around the Club, I wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to some of our members, Gary Black, Luis Rivero, Chris Williams, Grant Eble and Sean Donlin. Recently they demonstrated courage and swift action when responding to a medical emergency at the Club with the assistance of our Golf Professional Staff, ultimately saving a life. Let’s give them all a round of applause! Their heroism has inspired us to evaluate our preparedness for similar situations. After extensive discussions, our team has decided to enhance our CPR training programs and strategically place additional Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) throughout the Club.
I am happy to announce that we have installed two additional AEDs on the Club campus for a total of five, ensuring accessibility for all outlets. They can be found in the following areas:
1. Just outside Dutch’s Lounge, in the hallway closet
2. Inside the Fitness Center
3. Inside the Bag Room
4. Inside the Tennis Chalet
5. Inside Dutch’s Hut
While our full-time staff members undergo annual CPR training, we recognize that emergencies can occur even in remote locations, such as on the golf course. To address this concern, we are excited to offer our members the opportunity to become certified in CPR. On Wednesday, July 19th, we will be hosting two complimentary class sessions, each limited to 20 participants to ensure personalized instruction. Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your life saving skills! Sign-up details can be found on ForeTees.
In other news around the Club, we have received confirmation from our Driving Range net vendor that the long-awaited project is ready to move forward! In preparation, we have already started clearing trees that might interfere with the installation of the new 40’ net. We are hopeful that this project will begin during the month of July. Please look out for additional information on project details in the coming weeks as we continue to coordinate details with our contractor.
Our highly anticipated new fleet of golf carts should be arriving this month. These state-of-the-art carts will be equipped with cutting edge features including GPS-enabled screens providing accurate yardage information, cart tracking and geofencing. As we integrate the geofencing technology, there may be a brief transition period, during which the Golf Professional Staff will provide additional information regarding changes in cart functionality.
As previously announced, we will begin the completion of the Better Billy Bunkers on the Championship Golf Course starting the first week of August. To keep you informed, we will begin sending weekly project updates as construction progresses. In the next few weeks, be on the lookout for an email outlining golf course construction etiquette, which will explain how this project will impact play on the course.
Lastly, we want to ensure a well-maintained parking experience for all members and guests. Therefore, on Monday, July 10th , and Monday, July 17th, we will be sealing, crack filling, and striping the main lot, as well as performing crack filling and striping on the overflow lot. Please note that half of each lot will be closed on these respective dates.
Thank you for all your support and enthusiasm! We are looking forward to seeing you around the Club soon!

Manager’s Report by Emma Gore
Fellow Club Members,
As we find ourselves in the midst of our busiest time of year at the Club, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the many opportunities for enjoyment. Our dining, aquatic, racquet sport, and golf venues are buzzing with activity and heavy usage by our families and their guests. This is also the time of year when Club Management and the Board of Directors begin to focus our attention on planning for next year. Part of this planning involves review and discussion of what is currently working well, what is not working as well as we’d like, and what type of events/activities can be added or removed from the Club Calendar to enhance our membership experiences in the coming year. Taking time to thoughtfully respond to surveys about your experiences is important to the planning process for next fiscal year. I encourage each one of you to take the time to respond when you receive a survey from the Club. In doing so, you can help influence our future experiences.
Our Club is managed by our professional staff, led by Ms. Emma Gore, our Chief Operating Officer. Ms. Gore reports directly to the Board of Directors, while all other Club staff members report either directly or indirectly through their department heads to the COO. The Board Committees collaborate with the staff to provide member input. While our staff deserves commendation for their outstanding work, it is important to recognize that the activities and programs we enjoy as members are made possible by the dedicated time and effort of many Club members who volunteer their time and expertise. As I look around the Club during this busy time, I see the positive results of our volunteers and staff working together. A few examples are the Swim Team; Junior Golf; Entertainment Programming; Golf Leagues for Women, Seniors, Men and Couples; racquet sports activities; and collaboration with the District Golf organization. Behind the scenes, there are volunteers working diligently on the Board Committees to: provide financial expertise; aid in member recruitment; plan facilities improvements to identify and meet future member expectations; review our Governance model and keep it and our rules updated; provide input to grounds maintenance; and to provide input to our Food and Beverage operations.
Part of planning for the future is the identification of members who are willing to serve and who have time and expertise that can help the Club succeed. The Board Nominating Committee helps us identify potential volunteers for our committees and for future Board service. Last November, we sent out a Board Committee Interest Survey to gauge members’ interest in getting involved and to gain insights into their skill sets and expertise. I extend my gratitude to those who took the time to fill out the survey. While we were unable to accommodate everyone who expressed interest this fiscal year, we did add many new members to various committees. We intend to revisit the list for the next fiscal year and will continue to encourage those of you who were not placed on a committee this year to volunteer.
A comprehensive listing of the Board Committees can be found on the Club’s website and is also posted on a board near the south terrace hallway entrance to the clubhouse. I urge each of you to consider volunteering for the opportunity that aligns with your interests, as it promises to enrich your personal club experience. From my own experience, I can confidently say that the more one gives, the more one gets in return. The benefits of volunteering include building relationships with other members, the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve contributed to other’s enjoyment of the Club and knowing that your expertise and opinions are valued.
Thanks to all our volunteers for all you do. I look forward to seeing you around the Club, and to enjoying the results of your efforts.

Member-Member Shootout on June 10th.
We hope you are tolerating the warm temperatures. This week saw us dealing with a higher amount of humidity and temperatures. Prior to this week, we experienced very low humidity and it felt quite comfortable. As you are fully aware we are dealing with a significant drought. When we look back and tally the amount of rain we have received it’s quite daunting. For the month of June, we received 0.8” of rain. The average rainfall in St. Louis was 4.7”. Since May 15th, we have received 1.15” of rain. This data leads me into what I want to discuss about a term called Evapotranspiration or ET.
ET is a process when the soil loses moisture during the day. The soil can lose moisture by evaporation and by a process called transpiration. Transpiration is the process of plant roots taking in water from the soil and the leaves releasing that moisture into the atmosphere. ET, moisture loss from the soil by both processes, is a measurable entity. Now let’s look at the importance in the value of ET per day and what it is doing to the turf. This process applies to your home lawn as well as the golf course.
Every day has an ET value associated with it. The factors that play a part in ET values are Temperature, Wind Speed, Humidity and Solar Radiation (Intensity of sunlight). The past two weeks we have seen ET Values at .25”. This means that a quarter of an inch of ground water is leaving the soil into the atmosphere. If you don’t have your home irrigation system programmed to deliver a quarter of an inch of water to match what was lost from the soil that day, then you are running a deficit every day. The lack of rain is not putting moisture into the ground so when we only get 0.8” of rain in 30 days the turf gets stressed.
The golf course acts in the same way. The most we can irrigate at night is 0.12” which is half of the moisture loss for the day. The reason we can’t run more water at night is because it takes 8 hours to irrigate each night when we are maxing out the run times. This is why you will see us running heads during the day is to try and supplement more water and cool off the plants. Now who is ready for a quiz on Evapotranspiration (ET)? I would enjoy discussions on the golf course should you have any questions.
Course Improvements
The Grounds Team and our contractors have been making course improvements the past couple of weeks. Some of these projects include:
1. Repairing approaches on Championship Course holes 2, 9 and 10. We have removed sod, aerified and added soil to get proper drainage away from the greens.
2. Regraded along the cart path between both fairways on Championship Course hole #8.
3. Many irrigation repairs.
4. Replaced dead Zoysia as needed on Better Billy Bunkers.
Additional Improvements Starting Soon
1. Eliminating standing water on cart path areas.
2. Repairing concrete cart paths as needed.
3. Installation of the new poles and net at the end of the driving range.
I hope you are enjoying the course conditions this year and please have a safe and Happy 4th of July weekend!

Happy 4th to everyone! June was a great month for the 18 Hole Ladies. Many thanks to Carolyn Cash, Anne Hoette, and Chris Watson for hosting the Member-Guest Tournament on June 20, 2023. It was a great way to celebrate summer with our group.
I hope everyone was able to get in their first round of Match Play games. As promised, here are the deadline dates for the year and the rules for setting play.
Round 1 - Friday, June 30th
Round 2 - Friday, August 4th
Round 3 - Friday, September 1st
Round 4 - Friday, October 6th
Should the match not be scheduled prior to the deadline, the procedure will be as follows: A tee time at 3:00 pm on the deadline date will be reserved for the match. If only one player is present, they will be declared the winner and advance to the next round. In the event that neither play is present at this time, a coin flip will be executed by the Professional Staff to determine the winner of the match.
If you know your third round partners, you may play that in July too and same is true for all months going forward. Good luck to all!
July begins with the 18 Hole Ladies playing on Thursday, July 6th due to the July 4th holiday. It will be a Regular Play Day. The 9 Hole Ladies will play the same day too.
Upcoming dates for July sign up 30 days in advance on ForeTees:
Tuesday, July 11th: Member-Member - 8:00 am Shotgun. Thanks to chairs Lisa Schad and Cathy Moffit. Be sure to sign up as this event fills up fast.
Tuesday, July 18th: Play with Pro Nick Jones - 9:00 am Tee Time. First 3 sign ups will play. Reminder: There will be 2 alternates, because “Life Happens”

18 Hole Ladies Member Guest A Day at the Movies
June has sailed past. It was fueled by gales of laughter, the breeze of challenges and the fresh air of a new event. The debut of the Par 3 Scramble was truly a breath of fresh air. The 9 Hole Ladies applaud JT Tierney and Nick Jones for using their time, talent and creativity to reimagine Forest Hills as a par three course. They could have simply shortened each hole. However, in a true pro move, they redesigned holes to give the 9 and 18 Hole Ladies some fun and strategic challenges. Picture this example- the blue tee box on the 13th hole became the tee box for the 12th hole. This is just one of the redesigns the ladies enjoyed. The 9 Hole Ladies also enjoyed mixing it up with the 18 Hole Ladies. Here’s hoping this becomes an annual event. The winning foursomes were:
1st Place
Hetty Mayes
Kathy Dorch
Carolyn Cash
Pam Baumgart
2nd Place
Lori Mundwiller
Linda Trost
Rachel Schaaf
Courtney Birkel
3rd Place
Pam Atteberry
Nancy Quicke
Barbara Nance
Janine Bosanquet
On June 15th, Flag Day challenged the 9 Hole Ladies to rise above their handicap. Many attempted, but few succeeded. A wave of the flag to the following standouts:
1st Place: Carolyn Cash 2nd Place: Daisy Schrader 3rd Place: Maureen Roth
What’s up next: There will be a game and prize day on July 13th. On July 27th, we have an opportunity to Beat the Pro. Banter about the 9 Hole Course: Hitting over (or more specifically not hitting over) the creek on the 14th Hole. This is a Lateral Penalty Area. The golfer has three options. 1. Re-hit from original lie. 2. Drop behind Penalty Area, keeping spot where ball last crossed margin of Penalty Area, between ball and hole (no limit on how far back). 3. Drop ball outside Penalty Area, within two club lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin no closer to the hole.
