Ryan graduated from University of Missouri, Columbia (MIZ ZOU) in December 2014 with a degree in Sport Management. He so enjoyed his internship at the Gateway Grizzlies and his jobs as Suites Supervisor for the Cardinals and Blues games. Ryan also worked as a Purchasing Agent for Boeing and in several sales positions. He was a lifelong St. Louis sports fan and he lived and breathed Cardinals baseball. He enjoyed racquetball, frolf, golf, and pickleball. He had the best laugh and was a great mentor and friend to those who struggled alongside him with the disease of alcoholism. He will be greatly missed.

Members that are forgetting to sign in guests will receive a warning letter from the Board, stating that future infractions will result in further disciplinary action and possible suspension. Have Exciting News To Share?

Viridity is also our contractor for the Better Billy Bunker Project. They will move onto this project in mid September. We will be completing the bunkers that are the hardest to maintain and the ones that wash out most frequently, first. There will be 27 total bunkers switched to the Better Billy Bunker system this fall. Please be on the lookout for an email being sent out in the first week of September explaining what to expect during this construction process.

Signing in Prior to Play

Short Game Area

We encourage our members to share with us the interesting and exciting things happening in your lives! Please send your details to Margaret Sliney at margarets@firesthillscc.net. We will do our very best to include your information in our upcoming newsletter. The deadline is always the 20th of the month.

Viridity, our Short Game Area Contractor, is nearing completion of this project. We plan to seed the greens the first week of September which will allow for two grass growing seasons, one in the fall and one in early spring. As of now, we plan for play in May of 2023. The Short Game Area construction is planned to be completed the second week of September.

Creek Stabilization

We plan to begin construction of the Bocce Ball Courts mid September to be open for play next spring. There will be two courts constructed in the grassy area between the family and adult pools. We will be adding safety measures to ensure that these courts can be used outside of the pool season for bocce ball league play. We will continue to update you in the coming weeks and months on details surrounding leagues and open play details.

Bocce Courts

Our creek stabilization project continues to move forward. Our consultant has finalized the concept plans and drawings for the locations of the engineered rock riffles. There will be six engineered rock riffle structures that measure between 130 feet to 166 feet long placed throughout the mile long stretch of creek. Each of these structures will have vegetation incorporated within and consist of an upslope glide, a flat crest that is tied into the creek bank, a downslope channel, and a pool. These structures will slow the flow of water, in turn stabilizing the creek and controlling erosion. We have submitted the plans to the USACE for permitting and plan to receive bids from our approved contractors this month. We will continue to provide further updates in the coming weeks and months as we prepare the Championship Course for this project. There will be some tree removal taking place for access to the creek and preparations made to the cart paths to protect as much path as possible from the use of heavy equipment. Our current concept is to begin construction on the creeks in late fall or early winter of this year.

This September, the Club is breaking ground on our 2 new Bocce Ball Courts! It has been a fun planning process to be a part of, so it’s exciting to finally be a few weeks away from construction. The Family Pool will close for the season on Tuesday, September 6th, with the Adult Pool remaining open an additional week, and then closing on Monday, September 12th. The tentative start date for this project is September 15th, with construction to take place through the end of fall. The staff and I are ironing out the operational details such as leagues, rules, hours, etc., but the tentative plan is for the courts to open with our first season of league play this spring. Please plan on joining us for our inaugural 1st season!

Donation to the Fore Honor Foundation Forest Hills Country Club donated about 7,000 square feet of zoysia grass to the Fore Honor Foundation in August! This foundation was founded by Andrea Politte, the mother of a three time combat/war wounded United States Marine Corps veteran who suffers from extreme post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), Parkinson’s disease, and other injuries. She wanted to create a special place for military, veterans, first responders, and their families, especially those diagnosed with PTSD and TBI. Our donation helped them with their themed golf course which dedicates tee boxes and greens to honor each branch of service. The course is a place where they can receive eco therapy and reduce the negative effects of PTSD and TBI. If you are interested in learning more about this foundation or making a donation, check out their website (https://forehonor.com/foundation/). by Ryan Schaben ryans@foresthillscc.net

Executive Sous Chef, Chris Savage has been with the Club for over 7 years, even moving into the Interim Executive Chef role after Chef Craig’s departure. When we asked Chris to step into this role in May, he let us know that later this year he would be stepping away from the Club to spend more time with his wife, who had recently accepted a new position as a traveling nurse. Chris will be leaving the Club in October, and we wish him well and safe travels. Our new Executive Chef, Tony Laub, has wasted no time building up his team and I am excited that we have already hired our new Executive Sous Chef, James Woods. James grew up in University City and attended the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Oregon. Upon graduating, James moved to Alaska where he spent as much time as he could traveling. This experience helped grow his culinary knowledge that he’s now hoping will show up in the hearts and mouths of our Members! James most recently was an Executive Chef for private planes and was also a Chef at Casa Don Alfonso in Clayton. James currently resides in Maplewood with his wife, three children and their Basset Hound, Winifred. A fun fact about James is he is the grandson of local political legend, Lt. Gov. Harriett Woods, whom his 10 year old daughter is named after.

Some of the best weather we see all year is ahead us, so make sure you take advantage of September and get out on the golf course. Not only is the weather great, but the golf course condition in September is typically at its finest. When you are at the Golf Shop, don’t forget to check how much credit you have on the books. There is nearly $20,000 of credit outstanding that expires at year end. We have received several new shipments of apparel from Peter Millar, Holderness & Bourne, and Johnnie O. New FHCC belts, golf bags, and hats have arrived as well. While selection is high, there is no better time to use some of that credit. You earned it, so we want to make sure you use it before it expires.

Do you feel like you’re giving up distance with your swing? If so, you may not be using your body effectively to produce your maximum club head speed. For an efficient, powerful swing, your body must pivot properly to allow a balanced weight shift. Picture someone throwing a ball with speed and power. You need to turn backwards and put weight on your trail foot, then shift your weight into your front foot before your arm swings through and releases the ball. Golfers need to coil their body up in a similar fashion, then unwind properly into a balanced finish. Always start with a proper body turn (shoulders, hips, and knees) to load weight into your back heel. Starting the downswing is a combination of your weight re centering and your arms moving downwards. Next, your hips need to rotate towards the target as your arms bring the club through impact. This should result in not only more club head speed, but also a balanced finish position.
