It is with deep regret that we inform the membership of the passing of one of our former members, Frank Bommarito who passed away on January 2, 2023.

Frank was a member of Forest Hills for 50 years. Born and raised and doing business in Missouri for over 50 years, his legacy will forever live on, not only as one of St. Louis’s most prominent automotive legends, but through every life he has touched and every person that was impacted by his hardworking attitude and remarkable vision. He will be greatly missed.

It is with deep regret that we inform the membership of the passing of one of our former members, Marian Wegner who passed away on January 5, 2023. The Wegners were members of the Club for 47 years and she was an avid bridge player.

Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members,

The creek project is continuing to move forward ahead of schedule. The last few days of cold weather have impacted productivity due to the machines not having the ability to work in conditions below 20 degrees. However, this should not impact the anticipated completion scheduled for early March.

Last January, when the ballot went out for the assessment, the Board of Directors committed to completing three capital projects as part of the assessment.

• Creek repairs on the grounds of the 18 Hole Championship Golf Course (phase 1)

• Construction of a new Short Game Practice Facility

● Construction of two new Bocce Ball Courts

Included in the town hall presentation were details on the goals for the creek which were described as phase 1 of the creeks. This included the main stretch of Shotwell Creek and Tributary A as pictured below. Club management and the Board determined it was appropriate to focus the efforts on phase 1 of the creeks as there was significantly more erosion and damage to the creeks on the front 9 of the golf course. This also allowed for additional time to complete due diligence on potential solutions and estimate the additional costs for repairing those sections of the creek located on the back 9 of the golf course, considered phase 2 of the creeks.

As we continued to make plans for the creeks after the assessment passed with over 70% of the membership in favor of the projects, we became aware of recent changes to the “Waters of the US” Clean Water Act and the Navigable Water Protection Rule, which in turn caused us to partner with the United States Army Corps of Engineers to reinvent our original creek stabilization plan. As you may have seen while golfing recently, we have built a multitude of engineered rock riffles with natural and native plantings in the creek bed to stabilize the creek bed grade and pool the water, slowing the velocity of water running through the creek. Performance of the creek so far during recent storms has been positive. As we approach completion of phase 1 of the creek project it has become clear that this eco-friendly and natural looking approach has had an added benefit of savings from the original budgeted cost of phase 1.

During the last couple of months we have consulted with engineers and the contractor completing phase 1 of the creeks on potential solutions for phase 2 of the creeks. We have evaluated options and received preliminary bids. We are happy to announce that after review by the Finance Committee, the Board of Directors has approved additional scope to the current project to include some of the back 9 creeks that were originally deferred to phase 2. Starting next week, our contractor will be setting up a staging area and starting work on the creek from Hole #15 tee, up through Hole #12/#16 drink station, ending at the headwall on Hole #17. This area will include engineered rock riffles with natural and native plantings very similar to Shotwell Creek and Tributary A. As a part of this project, we will be removing the cart bridge on Hole #15 and replacing it with a land bridge to match the current crossing from Hole #11 to Hole #12. During construction we will have a temporary gravel crossing in place once the bridge is removed to give golf cart access to Hole #15. The pedestrian bridge coming out of the walk trail from Hole #11 will be removed temporarily to give machine access. During this time, please use the cart path from Hole #11 to access Hole #12. Please look for additional course information in our weekly course updates as we continue to make improvemen invest in our golf course.

We will realize significant savings by engaging our contractor to continue the work they have been doing on the front 9 creeks, rather mobilizing equipment and resources if we were to delay this work to a future time. We are extremely excited that we will be able to complete this additional scope from the savings we have realized on phase 1 of the creeks.

The weather here in February unfortunately won’t allow for much outdoor practice, but I have ideas for you to work on in the comfort of your home. Swinging a golf club inside the house can be dangerous, but if you have a short carpet in your basement or living room, you can safely work on your putting. With a couple household items, you can eliminate poor distance control, and missing short putts.

First, you should always try to gain confidence with short four to six foot putts. With a coffee mug set four feet away, practice softly bumping it into the mug where it ends up approximately two to four inches away from it. This will represent the putt going in at a proper rate of speed. If you struggle at this distance, move to three feet, but if successful, move back a foot or two.

For the next drill, you will set your golf balls about 20 to 25 feet from a wall. Three feet in front of the ball, place two cereal boxes facing each other, and about four inches apart. They will serve as a hallway for your ball to travel through. You can make it harder by laying them on their side for a longer hallway, or move them closer together. The goal is to have a proper start line of your putt, and good speed control rolling up to the wall. Try to get the ball as close as possible to the wall without bumping into it.

These measurements are starting points and may be adjusted by your skill level, or as you improve. Putting is an essential component to lowering scores and improving your handicap. These two drills will help you get the ball online, improve your speed control, and increase your confidence on the greens. When spring hits, you will be as sharp as ever with your putter and have an

If you haven’t seen the new Bocce Courts, you should check them out. They are located on the side of the Pool Cabana between the Adult Pool and the Family Pool. We are looking forward to our Inaugural Spring Bocce League that will begin around the first week of April. Leagues will be hosted on Thursday evenings and mid-afternoon on Sundays. The full Spring Bocce Program including rules, sign up form, schedules, etc., will hit your inboxes mid-February. The Bocce Courts will also be available for regular play during normal aquatic hours by checking out the bocce balls from the Cabana staff.

As of February 1st, we are rolling out a new event cancellation policy. We have always had a 48-hour cancellation policy meaning cancellations made within 48 hours of an event are charged 100% of the event fee. In most cases, food for the event is purchased days in advance and set up for the event starts to take place days before. Staffing levels are also based off the number of reservations. In an effort to accommodate and encourage Members to reach out about cancellations in advance, the new policy will still be 48 hours; however, cancellations made after 48 hours will be charged at 50% of the event fee. No show cancellations will be charged 100% of the event fee. We think this will better accommodate last minute cancellations.
