Message from Rose-Marie, aged 61

This message sent to the Literacy Foundation is a very telling illustration of the cause we are championing, and shows parents’ fragility and the impact of that fragility on their children.

The cause in figures

20

For the past (high school) diploma.

49% of Quebecers aged 16–65 stand on the bottom two rungs of the reading proficiency ladder:2 800,000 are illiterate 1,700,000 have low reading proficiency 2,500,000 in all, of whom 45% currently have jobs

years,

25% of young people have dropped out of school each year before receiving their first For obvious reasons, the name has been changed, but the message is real. The Foundation sent Rose-Marie and her daddy a small gift package containing books for young and old readers. Words of hope

In this very special year, the Foundation has the privilege of being able to count on a spokesperson with impact, a spokesperson who shocks, because she asks the questions that need to be asked, and insists on getting answers. Marie-France Bazzo is not afraid of words. She does not button her lip, or mince her words!

Knowing we can find someone to help and listen to us is often the trigger we need to convert thought into action. An adult struggling with reading difficulties may call the Info-Alpha line, where he will find somebody to listen to him, understand him and direct him toward the resources best suited to him.

© Télé-Québec

A spokesperson with conviction

“Illiteracy and low reading proficiency have reached scandalous levels in Quebec, and demand tangible action on a large scale. Making reading accessible to the greatest number is a question of collective prosperity, dignity and pride!”

Receiving our first brand new children’s book, a gift from someone we don’t know, but who is telling us how important books and reading are. Being able to take it home. That is a powerful trigger for passion, the passion for reading, from the earliest age. It is a promise of success for children, and thus for the success of our society as a whole. For education remains the most effective, lasting means of improving quality of life for individuals and communities. The Quebec of today has to give its residents the knowledge and skills required for daily life: reading, understanding, helping their children, playing fully their role as citizens and having access, at work and elsewhere, to lifelong learning, since that is now part of life. That is the project which mobilizes the entire Literacy Foundation team, and its Board of Directors, partners, volunteers and donors. In 20 years, the Foundation has accomplished a great deal. But much still remains for it to do. To be successful, it needs everyone, and above all it needs a broader awareness of this flagrant problem which is still all too often surrounded by a wall of silence. And naming the problem is proof positive of the desire to resolve it. That is the conviction which underpins all the work accomplished by the Foundation. Growing

Prevention

For the past 11 years, the Gift of Reading® project has aimed to raise the awareness of up with a book the general public as to the importance of reading for all children by taking a simple step: giving a brand new book to a child aged 0–12 living in neighbourhoods marked by poverty and low education. “The wonderful thing about the project is that it allows everyone to have a direct impact on the daily life of a child in their region. Giving a child his or her very own book can make all the difference when the social and economic environment is hardly conducive to reading.” Marie Turgeon, actress and passionate spokesperson for the project for the past four years!

Raise-a-Reader The CanWest Global Foundation’s national initiative, the annual Raise-a-Reader/Lire, c’est grandir fundraising campaign, organized in Montreal by The Gazette, this year raised $10,000 for the Literacy Foundation’s Gift of Reading® project.

In February 2007, the Métro daily newspaper launched Bac moi! (Bin me!), a new recycling awareness campaign aimed at its readers. The campaign involved installing 220 recycling bins in the Montreal metro. Through this program, 750 tonnes of paper are recycled each year— the equivalent of 12,750 trees. Since 2005, the Literacy Foundation has received part of the profit generated by the recycling campaign run by the Métro newspaper. This financial contribution helps the Foundation reach a larger number of illiterate young adults and help them through the Info-Alpha line. In 2010, close to $1,500 was generously given to the Foundation. Publisher and bookstore promotions Five publishing houses and one bookstore offered promotions to raise funds for the Literacy Foundation. In this way, the Foundation received $3,395.

Major giving is aimed at ensuring the Literacy Foundation’s success, growth, outreach and sustainability by developing new relations and partnerships.

Year after year, the Literacy Foundation enjoys the support of numerous companies and organizations in the form of goods and services. These come from the publishing and media sectors, which thus contribute to enhancing the Foundation’s outreach and the scope of its activities. Whether they take the form of air time for public service messages in the electronic media, free space in the print media or gifts of books to meet part of the needs for certain regions or age groups, gifts in kind represent companies’ real participation in the fulfilment of our goals.
