2024 BLIA Oceania Fellowship Conference and The 30th Anniversary of Nan Tien Temple Celebrations
2024 BLIA Oceania Fellowship Conference and Celebrations for the 30 th Anniversary of Nan Tien Temple was grandly held at Nan Tien Temple from 21st to 22nd Sept, with more than 1,000 attendees, including guiding Venerables and seven BLIA chapter members in Oceania. Fo Guang Shan NZ Abbess Manshin led a group of 12 BLIA North and South Island members on a journey to Australia to participate in this special event. A series of 30 th Anniversary celebration activities presented the cohesive force of Oceania BLIA chapter members and demonstrated the richness of Humanistic Buddhism.
On 22nd September 2024, the Grand Opening Ceremony of the 2024 BLIA Oceania Fellowship conference and the 30 th Anniversary of the Nan Tien Temple Celebration were held at Nan Tien Temple, Wollongong. Attendees included Hon Julian Hill MP, Assistant Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs; Hon Alison Byrnes MP; Hon Jacqui Munro MLC, on behalf of New South Wales opposition leader Mr Speakman; President Chaoxiang YANG of Fo Guang Shan University Consortium;
President Judith Hurley of Illawarra People for Peace and nearly 300 representatives from all over Oceania.
Most Venerable Hsin Bau, President of BLIA World Headquarters presided over the opening ceremony, with emphasis on the important concept of co-existence and co-prosperity and called on the public to practice environmental protection of 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) and the Five Harmonies to create a peaceful society.
2024 BLIA Oceania Fellowship Conference at Nan Tien Temple
Temple Recognized on The New South Wales Heritage Register
The NSW Heritage Council has officially recognised Nan Tien Temple on the NSW Heritage Register as an exceptional example of Australian Buddhist architecture and landscape and a significant cultural site. It shows the development process and historical significance of Buddhism to the local area at the end of the 20 th century.
On that day, the Head Abbot of FGS, Most Venerable Hsin Bau, presided over the unveiling ceremony marking the inclusion of Nan Tien Temple in the New South Wales Cultural Heritage Register in Australia. Most Venerable led the participants in chanting and a blessing ceremony, praising the remarkable achievements of Nan Tien Temple in the localisation
of Dharma propagation over the past 30 years. In his address, he remarked, The Buddha’s light shines across Oceania; cultural heritage thrives in harmony. With boundless compassion, joy, and selfless giving, diversity and integration unveil a new era . Most Venerable encouraged BLIA Oceania to continue serving the country through culture and to promote harmony and coexistence.
Chris Minns MP, Premier of New South Wales, also awarded the Premier’s Award, the state’s highest honour, to recognise Nan Tien Temple’s outstanding contribution to community service and cultural promotion, which has become another important milestone for Nan Tien Temple over the past 30 years.

International Attendance at Three Refuges & Five Precepts, Bodhisattva Precepts Ceremony
Most Venerable Hsin Bau presided over the Three Refuges and Five Precepts, Bodhisattva Precepts ceremony at Nan Tien Temple in the afternoon of 22nd September 2024. More than 500 people from Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, and more participated in this special event.
Senior Sergeant Anson LIN of the New Zealand Police and Director of BLIA North Island chapter, who took the new precepts of the Bodhisattva, said that taking the Bodhisattva precepts
strengthens his faith. He vows to further learn the spirit of a Bodhisattva and endeavours to do more service to the community.
The Most Venerable conducted a Dharma Talk, saying that taking precepts is the process of finding support and direction in life. The precepts are the cornerstone of practice, helping people illuminate wisdom in life, practise the way of a Bodhisattva and attain Buddhahood.
A Discourse with the Heart Dharma Talk by the Head Abbot of FGS, the Most Venerable Hsin Bau
The Head Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Most Venerable Hsin Bau, visited Fo Guang Shan Christchurch on 23rd September 2024 and held a Dharma Talk titled A Discourse with the Heart. The Talk was attended by over 200 people, including more than 40 locals. Distinguished guests included Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Chch Madame HE Ying, Abbot of Sri Lanka Samadhi Temple in Chch Bhante Soma, President of the New Zealand Buddhist Council Robert Hunt, University of Canterbury Professor Mike Reid and others. Also present were FGS Oceania Chief Abbess Manko, FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, President of FGS Benefactor Venerable Manyi, Director of FGS Benefactor Venerable Juechun and FGS Honorary Benefactors Mr Ming Tai HUANG and Ms Dolly TSAI.
This was Most Venerable Hsin Bau’s second visit to FGS Christchurch since 2018. The Most Venerable used life examples from the Buddha's time to illustrate that Buddhism is a lively practice, emphasizing the importance of placing people first. He discussed the significance of letting go of attachments and encouraged a simple lifestyle to alleviate inner worries. He highlighted that true happiness comes from inner peace, not material possessions.
Most Venerable Hsin Bau encouraged the public to practice spiritual cultivation to achieve personal awakening. With wisdom, one can navigate changes, overcome difficulties and find liberation. Compassion, inner peace and a pure mind are essential for a fulfilling life. Understanding the concepts of
Impermanence and Non-self helps reveal the true meaning of emptiness, which embodies the joy of the heart, purity and liberation. Most Venerable Hsin Bau explained that Empty joy means that understanding emptiness, one can let go of attachments to both good and bad experiences.
FGS NZ Abbess Manshin thanked the Most Venerable for sharing the wisdom of Dharma and the true essence of Buddhism with the Christchurch community, encouraging everyone to practice the teachings in their lives. Abbess shared remarks from Consul General Madame HE Ying, who noted that the Dharma Talk attracted the largest group of Christchurch public that evening, reflecting the community's enthusiasm for the teachings. Abbess presented Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s 2025
couplet to Consul General HE Ying and gifted the Venerable Master’s books to the local audience.
BLIA South Island expressed gratitude to the Head Abbot for his insightful talk, which was full of Chan wisdom that allowed the public to have a deeper understanding of Buddhism. After the event, the Temple presented each attendee with an apple and a copy of Most Venerable Hsin Bau’s book Morning Insights , wishing everyone the ability to navigate daily life with Prajna wisdom.

The Most Venerable’s Dharma Talk on The Wisdom of Chan Enlightens Hearts
On 26 th September 2024, FGS Auckland Temple and the BLIA North Island Chapter had the honour of inviting The Most Venerable Hsin Bau, the Head Abbot of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, to present a Dharma Talk on The Wisdom of Chan at the Main Shrine. Nearly 300 attendees gathered, including Chief Abbess Manko of FGS Oceania, Abbess Manshin of FGS New Zealand, BLIA NZ members, former NZP Inspector Wendy Spiller, artist Richard Monk and community members.
During the Dharma Talk, Most Venerable Hsin Bau explained the relationship between Chan and wisdom, noting that Chan’s ultimate aim is enlightenment, achieved by harnessing the power of the mind. Through mindful awareness, a
practitioner of Chan perceives the impermanence of life, thus liberating themselves from the cycles of suffering and rebirth. Drawing from teachings in key Buddhist texts like the Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra and Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra , he demonstrated how the wisdom of Chan brings both joy and profound insight into daily life. Most Venerable also highlighted the importance of cultivating merit and wisdom to achieve harmony within oneself and the wider community.
Abbess Manshin expressed heartfelt gratitude to Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of Fo Guang Shan, and the current Head Abbot Hsin Bau, for sharing the teachings of Chan Buddhism with the New Zealand community. She encouraged
the audience to remember that with wisdom comes spaciousness, with wisdom one sees emptiness, and with wisdom one can overcome suffering.
Inspector Wendy Spiller expressed her appreciation to the Most Venerable, sharing his insights refreshingly, and she was particularly moved by the notion of non-attachment as a source of peace. British artist Richard Monk expressed his appreciation for the lecture, which he felt provided a newfound sense of inner calm that would enhance his creative pursuits. Regina Lee, a committee of BLIA YAD, expressed gratitude for the wisdom imparted by the Most Venerable, pledging to apply the principles of Chan in her daily life and career, believing it would strengthen her path and bring her more meaning in life.

The Triple Gem Refuges and Five Precepts Ceremony at FGS NZ On
the Path to Enlightenment
On the evening of 26 th September 2024, Fo Guang Shan New Zealand hosted the Triple Gem Refuges and Five Precepts Ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Most Venerable Hsin Bau, the Head Abbot of the FGS Buddhist Order. Chief Abbess Manko of FGS Oceania, Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ and other Venerables were also present to support the ceremony. There were 163 attendees from various backgrounds and cultures across New Zealand, including the British ceramic artist Richard Monk, who gathered in the Main Shrine to vow to uphold the precepts and become devoted disciples of the Triple Gem. The youngest participant was just 1 year and 10 months old, while the eldest was 80.
Most Venerable Hsin Bau explained the Five Precepts to the new disciples, illustrating that having the Dharma to rely upon is akin to children receiving the care of their
parents or plants flourishing under the nurture of sunlight and rain. He encouraged all those who have taken refuge to engage in Temple activities independently and proactively, thereby empowering themselves.
“Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of Fo Guang Shan, taught us that everyone possesses the potential to become a Buddha and that each person is inherently a Buddha. Taking refuge is about cultivating confidence in oneself and in the teachings of Buddhism,” The Most Venerable shared, congratulating all participants on becoming faithful Buddhists. He blessed the disciples, encouraging them to progress resolutely along the Bodhi path, strengthen their faith in the Dharma and continually nurture a heart to serve and practice the Bodhisattva path, aiming for ultimate enlightenment.
Chief Abbess Manko reminded the new disciples that the Triple Gems
provide the perfect foundation for Buddhist practice. “Take good care of your mind, join in communal practices frequently and seek guidance from wise mentors so that your resolve on the path remains steadfast,” she advised.
Richard Monk, a New Zealand-based ceramic artist, expressed profound honour and gratitude at taking the Triple Gem Refuges and Five Precepts Ceremony under the guidance of the Head Abbot Hsin Bau, sharing his intent to continue spreading messages of goodness throughout his life journey. Another disciple, Jiankui YANG, was deeply moved by the calmness of the ceremony. The gifts from the Temple were received with heartfelt appreciation, conveying warmth and blessings. Disciple Jinyan WANG expressed a desire to apply the principles she had learned to her daily life and work, remaining mindful of her thoughts and actions in each moment.

Celebrating Community and Police Collaboration for a Pure Land
On 26 th September 2024, at the invitation of Inspector Rodney Honan, Area Commander of Counties Manukau East Police Station, the Most Venerable Hsin Bau, Head Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, visited the Manukau East Police Headquarters. He was accompanied by Chief Abbess Manko of FGS Oceania, Abbess Manshin of FGS New Zealand, President Venerable Manyi of the FGS Benefactor Association, Venerable Juechun and President Evelyn KU of the BLIA North Island Chapter. They were warmly welcomed by Inspector Honan, Inspector Cook and Senior Sergeant Anson LIN, alongside other officers.
Inspector Honan thanked the FGS Auckland team for their weekly flower arrangements, which bring comfort to visitors and warmth to the station’s atmosphere. He also highlighted the Chan Garden Abbess Manshin and her team created as a space for officers to relax and recharge. In addition, lighting the stone lanterns
gifted by the Temple has become a meaningful ritual, providing officers with warmth and a sense of renewal during difficult times.
SSgt Anson LIN led the guests through various areas of the police station. In the Community Policing Office, a wall showcased photos from the Temple’s 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing, featuring police officers engaging with students in educational activities. Proudly displayed alongside were certificates of appreciation awarded by the Temple, serving as a reminder of the officers’ dedication to community service.
The Most Venerable Hsin Bau presented each member of the police staff with an auspicious charm, offering blessings for safety and peace in their work. This visit highlighted the strong bonds between the Temple and the New Zealand Police—a testament to the power of community collaboration.
In the afternoon, the group toured the café and coffee roasting facility of BLIA North Island Director Ken SHI, whose blends are served at FGS Water Drop Cafés. Coincidentally, a visiting motorcycle group received blessings and charms from the Most Venerable Hsin Bau, expressing joy and interest in visiting the Temple.
On 25th September 2024, a delegation from the New Zealand Police, including Insp Wendy Spiller, Director of the 2023 International Women in Policing Conference, Snr Sgt Anson LIN, Sgt Kevin DENG, Sgt Richard Bracey and other representatives, visited the Auckland Temple to meet the Most Venerable. The Most Venerable Hsin Bau shared his appreciation for the work of police officers, comparing their role to that of compassionate guardians. The harmony achieved through collaboration between the police and the Temple is a blessing for all.

Commemorating the First Anniversary of Venerable Master’s Passing
BLIA NZ Members Honour the Founder’s Legacy
On 24th February 2024, FGS NZ commemorated the first anniversary of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s passing. At 3pm local time (10 am Taiwan time), Abbess Manshin led the venerables and BLIA NZ members to join the global live-streamed memorial service. Together, they offered lights and paid homage to the Founding Master, reflecting on the Master’s virtuous legacy.
Head Abbot Most Venerable Hsin Bau expressed gratitude to global followers for protecting the Dharma and continuing the vision of Humanistic Buddhism. He emphasised, “Buddhism is a light that saves the world, and the Founding Master wished for everyone to live in peace and happiness. May everyone be inspired by the Master’s compassion to diligently support Buddhism.”
Abbess Manshin shared the Venerable Master’s teachings, reminding attendees the importance of keeping up. She reflected on the rare and precious connection with the Master, encouraging everyone to work together on Bodhisattva pathways, to take on responsibilities to propagate the Truth and cultivate oneself to enrich life.
President Evelyn KU of the BLIA North Island Chapter expressed gratitude for the Founding Master’s gift of Fo Guang Shan Temples, where monastics help them to understand and practise Humanistic Buddhism. She shared the inspiration from the Master’s calligraphy writings, wishing everyone to cherish the present, stay connected with the Temple and cultivate the resources for enlightenment.
BLIA Advisor Lintao YU expressed his pride in being a part of Fo Guang Shan, through the Founding Master’s faith and teachings, which has brought quality and value to life. Deputy President Larry YANG fondly recalled the Master’s compassion and pledged to cultivate strength and dedication to uphold the Dharma.
This memorial service deepened the unity among BLIA members, reaffirming their commitment to perpetuating the Venerable Master’s spirit by applying the principles of Humanistic Buddhism in daily life and contributing to a more harmonious society.

Celebrating the 58th Anniversary of The Founding of Fo Guang Shan
To commemorate the 58th anniversary of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, FGS Auckland and Christchurch organised the One Million Heart Sutras in the Buddha Sutra Transcription event, which attracted over 200 devotees. Guided by the venerables, the participants recited and transcribed the Heart Sutra, connecting with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to enhance their wisdom through this meaningful practice.
Abbess Manshin quoted Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teaching: Do not be swayed by emotions, wealth or circumstances , emphasising that the essence of emptiness lies in selftransformation. The Abbess also shared the Master’s insight, Being
busy is nourishment, highlighting how Bodhisattvas dedicate themselves to propagating Buddhism and serving the society. Abbess encouraged devotees to emulate the Bodhisattvas and focus on diligent cultivation.
Abbess highlighted the immense blessing of being able to transcribe the Heart Sutra . The Temple actively participated in the One Million Heart Sutras in the Buddha Sutra Transcription project initiated by the Fo Guang Shan Headquarters. This global initiative invites one million people to transcribe the Heart Sutra, with the transcriptions enshrined in the Great Buddha statue at the Buddha Museum. The project aims to enhance the blessings and wisdom of all.
Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Juexi highlighted the profound merits of sutra transcription, not only to honour the Founding Master but also to dedicate the merit to liberating parents across lifetimes from suffering. Venerable encouraged combining practice with understanding and dedicating the merits to social harmony and world peace.
President Bernie SIEW of the BLIA South Island expressed his gratitude to the Venerable Master for establishing FGS in Christchurch and bringing the Dharma to the community. BLIA Advisor Louisa KUO encouraged members to approach worldly endeavours with compassion, planting seeds of Bodhi in their families and society.

BLIA Members NZ Remembrance of Master with Yangzhou Dumplings
FGS Auckland held a Light Offering Dharma Function on 12 th February 2025 to commemorate the second anniversary of the passing of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founding Master of FGS. Devotees offered light and paid homage to the Founding Master, honouring his teachings and legacy. As a heartfelt gesture, the Auckland and Christchurch Temples also specially prepared Yangzhou dumplings and steamed buns—flavours reminiscent of the Master’s hometown—creating a bridge that connected him with his followers through shared memories and gratitude.
The Venerable Master once mentioned in One Hundred Lectures on Monastic Affairs that dumplings symbolise unity and completeness. The Chinese place great importance on family togetherness, thus making and eating dumplings is a traditional custom during the New Year and the Lantern Festival. These round
dumplings carry profound meaning as they embody the spirit of inheritance and practice.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ led the team in making dumplings. Using bok choy as the filling, plump and hearty dumplings that symbolised the deep longing and remembrance for the Grand Master were created. Senior Sergeant Anson LIN of the NZP visited the Auckland Temple to taste them. Upon learning they were made to honour the Master, he gratefully ate two and commended the fine taste of the dumplings. The Temple also gifted each volunteer an apple as a token of appreciation for their dedication, wishing them peace and auspiciousness.
BLIA members and youths in New Zealand reflected on the special significance of commemorating the Master’s second anniversary. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to taste Yangzhou
Dumplings , a tradition honoring the Founding Master. The warmth of the dumplings filled their stomachs and touched their hearts—much like the Master’s teachings, which inspire them with gentle yet profound wisdom. Sincerely, they reaffirmed their vows: to remain steadfast in the Dharma, stay connected with the Temple, and serve the community wholeheartedly to repay the Master’s kindness.

2024 BLIA World HQ 6th Meeting of The Seventh Board of Directors
The 2024 BLIA World Headquarters 6 th Meeting of the Seventh Board of Directors was held at the Fo Guang Shan Fashui Temple in Japan on 6 th and 7th September 2024, attracting 2,000 BLIA members worldwide to participate; online meetings were also available. With the theme of Co-existence and Co-prosperity, the conference emphasised strengthening faith and working hand in hand for a bright future. The unveiling ceremony of the Founder of FGS Buddhist Order, Venerable Master Hsing Yun Memorial Park, was also held. BLIA members worldwide commemorated the Founding Master and vowed to pass down his compassionate mind.
At the opening ceremony, representatives from five continents entered, dressed in traditional attire from their respective countries. The conference commenced with a vibrant Japanese cultural performance. Most Venerable Hsin Bau, President of BLIA World Headquarters, encouraged members to uphold the teachings of the Venerable Master by
embodying the spirit of the Three Acts of Goodness and helping others. A video message featuring the Founding Master was shown, emphasising the importance of preserving Buddhist teachings, fostering hope for the future and inspiring BLIA members to pass their faith on to the next generation.
Honorary President Po-Hsiung WU conveyed through a video message that faith serves as a guiding compass in life, emphasising the commitment to continue the transmission of this wisdom. Vice President Changle LIU called on BLIA members to shoulder the responsibility of propagating the Dharma and benefiting sentient beings, addressing global conflicts with compassion and tolerance while promoting world peace and the wellbeing of humanity. Canadian MP Leah Taylor Roy also encouraged BLIA members to create meaningful change through small, impactful actions.
The conference presented the awards for the 2024 Three Acts of Goodness Micro Film competition,
which received 3,013 entries from 115 countries. Polish director Marcin Tomaszewski’s Innusuk – The Way Home won first place in the drama category, while Taiwan’s The Way Home and Cloud with Blessings earned the Pure Green Award and the Judges’ Choice Award, respectively. Films from Pakistan and Iran also received recognition in the documentary and Pure Green categories.
This year, BLIA’s activities have yielded remarkable achievements. Notably, Malaysia’s FGS Seremban Temple has officially commenced construction after seven years of planning and will become a centre for culture and Dharma propagation. Newly established BLIA chapters include the BLIA Ho Chi Minh Chapter in Vietnam and the BLIA Tokyo Scouts in Japan. Additionally, BLIA chapters in Japan, Macao, Singapore and Malaysia held president handover and director appointment ceremonies during the conference.
Spreading the Seeds of Compassion Across the Five Continents
The BLIA World Headquarters' 6 th Meeting of the Seventh Board of Directors concluded with a closing ceremony on 7th September 2024, during which nine key resolutions were announced to advance Buddhism and foster the integration of religion with society. In his address, Most Venerable Hsin Bau quoted the Founding Master, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, who described the Temple as a place for spiritual renewal. He emphasised that BLIA members should strive to share the wisdom and compassion gained from the conference with communities around the globe.
Secretary General Venerable Jue Pei of BLIA World Headquarters announced the resolutions aimed at implementing the theme of Coexistence and Co-prosperity, fostering the integration of religion and society, and promoting the following initiatives:
• Globally promoting and reading the Complete Works of Venerable Master
Hsing Yun, integrating Buddhism into daily life
• Supporting the Good Seedlings scholarship project to assist disadvantaged students
• Establishing the Buddha Light Care Group to support the education and career development of second and third-generation BLIA members
• Encouraging the development of AI technology to facilitate the global dissemination of Buddhism
• Participating in the 2025 Global Buddhism Examination and the Three Acts of Goodness Microfilm Competition
• Promoting the Beauty of Buddha Light: Co-existence and Coprosperity Photography Competition
Additionally, the conference approved the plan for the 2025 BLIA YAD activities. It was also resolved that the 2025 BLIA Annual General Conference would be hosted by BLIA World HQ and held at Da Jue Temple in Yixing, China, from 15th to 19 th October 2025.
Abbess Manrun of FGS Fashui Temple in Japan thanked all participants and volunteers for their dedication. BLIA Japan Director Mingda Xia expressed gratitude and ceremonially handed over the flag to the BLIA World Headquarters, host of next year’s conference, eliciting enthusiastic applause.
Acting President Venerable Tzu Jung thanked participants and emphasised that sharing Buddhist compassion values is a collective responsibility of BLIA members. She inspired everyone to uphold the Founding Master's wisdom and actively promote Buddhism. Most Venerable Hsin Bau encouraged members to return to the Temple, nurture their spiritual growth and envision a hopeful future.
The closing ceremony ended with the Farewell Song as participants exchanged heartfelt farewells and best wishes, concluding the event harmoniously.

FGS NZ Abbess Manshin Presents on Localising the 3G4G Values in NZ
From 15th to 17th October 2024, the 6 th World Buddhist Forum was held in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. Organised by the Buddhist Association of China and the Chinese Religious Culture Communication Association, with the ZheJiang Organising Committee, the theme of the forum was Hand in Hand for Harmonious Coexistence. This year’s forum included various programmes such as an opening ceremony, key note speeches, sub-forums, new media and television forums, a closing ceremony, as well as prayer ceremony and exhibitions on Buddhist culture.
The grand opening took place on the evening of 15th October, with speeches from notable guests, including WANG Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political
Consultative Conference. Nearly 1,000 participants from 72 countries and regions attended, including representatives from the global Buddhist community, experts and scholars. Fo Guang Shan Head Abbot Hsin Bau, President of the FGS Light Transmission Council, Venerable Master Tzu Jung and Director of the FGS Cultural Institute, Venerable Yi Kong, were among the attendees.
In his address, WANG Huning highlighted the theme, Hand in Hand for Harmonious Coexistence, as a platform to showcase the open and inclusive nature of Chinese Buddhism, promote the preservation and development of global Buddhist culture, and strengthen exchanges among human civilisations. He encouraged the Buddhist community to uphold its traditions, foster goodness, meet the needs of the times, contribute wisdom and strength
to world peace, development and human progress through interfaith dialogue and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.
On 16 th October, Head Abbot Hsin Bau addressed the main forum, stating that the theme, Hand in Hand for Harmonious Coexistence reflects the universal values of equality and compassion in Buddhism. He expressed hope that Humanistic Buddhism would bring peace to the world. He emphasised that Fo Guang Shan adheres to the philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism as advocated by the Founder of FGS Buddhist Order Venerable Master Hsing Yun, who said, "All aspects of life are interconnected with the nation, society, family and friends. As practitioners of Humanistic Buddhism, we must cultivate and learn from within, align our actions with the Buddha’s mind. This allows

us to broaden our minds, become one with the universe, and be as inclusive as the boundless sky that embraces all." This, he said, is the mindset of coexistence for Humanistic Buddhism practitioners. Venerable Master Hsing Yun also stressed that the most important aspect of learning Buddhism is practice. He explained that practice means aligning one's heart with the Buddha’s, sharing the Buddha’s aspirations, following the Buddha’s actions and enlarging the meaning of one’s practice. When all actions resonate with the Buddha, one naturally attains the state of "walking with the Buddha," which is the true meaning of Hand in Hand for Harmonious Coexistence. In today’s world, unity and cooperation are needed to realise harmonious coexistence and build a brighter future.
Seven sub-forums were held on 17th October, eleven Venerable from Fo Guang Shan presented at the sub-forums, including Venerable YongFu, who spoke on Humanistic Buddhism: Thought and Practice, Using Hong Kong’s Fo Guang Shan as an Example, Venerable ManChien on Promoting Humanistic Buddhism through Culture: Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery as an Example and Venerable Manshin on Localisation of Humanistic Buddhism in New Zealand. Additionally, Venerable JuePei discussed Transmission of the Contemporary Buddhist Dharma Lineage, Venerable JueFang addressed Public Welfare and Charity: The Social Responsibility of Buddhism and Venerable JueDuo explored Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Public Welfare Innovations. Venerable MiaoXi discussed International and Digital Dissemination of Humanistic
Buddhism: Using Merit Times as an Example, while Venerable MiaoNan shared insights on The Inspiration of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Sixty Years of Sangha Education In the English session, Venerable Miao Guang, Venerable YouZai, and Venerable ZhiYue presented on Preservation and Compilation: The Digitisation of Buddhist Texts.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ presented at the sub-forum, discussing initiatives such as the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing Education Program, the treeplanting VegRun, the Art Salon to support local artists and community support when needed—such as the distribution of rapid antigen test kits. These examples demonstrate that the thought and practice of these initiatives are rooted in the Bodhisattva path, focusing on the core principle of Buddhism, which is centred on people.

Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ Awarded The Member of The New Zealand Order of Merit

The New Zealand Royal Honours & Investiture ceremonies took place at Government House in Auckland on 2nd October 2024, where nine individuals were honoured for their outstanding contributions to New Zealand. Among them was Venerable Abbess Manshin of Fo Guang Shan New Zealand, who was awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM). The award was presented by GovernorGeneral NZ Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro, on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III. Distinguished attendees included Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Hon Andrew Bayly, Kaumātua Joe Harawira, as well as Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, President Yulin KU of BLIA North Island, Advisor Sally WONG and accompanies of the recipients.
In her address, Dame Cindy Kiro highly praised the contributions made by the awardees to New Zealand, acknowledging their use of talent
and ability to enhance the lives of others, bringing pride and wellbeing to the country. She described the New Zealand honours system as the highest public affirmation of outstanding individual achievement, embodying the spirit of service, care and the pursuit of excellence for society. On behalf of King Charles III and the people of New Zealand, she extended heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the recipients, encouraging them to continue leading by example and inspiring others to contribute to society.
During the ceremony, Abbess Manshin’s long-standing dedication to community welfare in New Zealand was recognised. Under her leadership, Fo Guang Shan established Temples in both Auckland and Christchurch in New Zealand, initiated the free education programme The 3G4G of Festival Cultural Sharing and served as the Curator of the Fo Guang Yuan
Art Gallery NZ, where she organised various artistic and social education events. Furthermore, Abbess Manshin led the team collaboration with the Red Cross in providing home meal delivery services and opened the Temple as a shelter providing food and accommodation to those affected by the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she coordinated the distribution of 15,000 rapid test kits to 97 schools within four days.
Abbess Manshin expressed that the award is a recognition of the Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s lifelong advocacy for world peace and interdependence. Abbess affirmed that the honour belongs to the entire team and that they will continue striving to provide quality service to the community, sharing kindness values in New Zealand.
New Zealand Media Exclusive Interview with Venerable Manshin
Chief Editor Farida Master of the Auckland newspaper Eastlife conducted an exclusive interview with Venerable Manshin, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan New Zealand. The report was published simultaneously in the Times and Eastlife on 27th March 2024, exploring how Fo Guang Shan Temple became an epicentre of vibrant cultural activity and transformed the cultural landscape of East Auckland.
Abbess Manshin recalled Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s mission 20 years ago: Serve and Share Compassionate Values in New Zealand. Abbess emphasised that this mission was not a personal achievement, but the collective power of the community. Fo Guang Shan is committed to bringing people together and creating a harmonious society. Abbess pointed out that Buddhism is inclusive. FGS NZ is dedicated to nourishing the minds of young people with the concepts of love and kindness. The Temple cooperated with schools to
share the values of The Three Acts of Goodness & Four Givings advocated by Venerable Master to help students establish a correct outlook on life and values.
Facing the difficulties during the Temple construction, Abbess Manshin said that hardship is a wonderful teacher. Hardship allows one to discover inner determination and strength, embodying Venerable Master's teachings that those who can endure hardship will have a future. Additionally, the Venerable Master once instructed that the world belongs to those who serve the community. Regarding the positive impact of the Temple on the local community, Abbess emphasised that the wise and compassionate values of Buddhists must be implemented through actions, not just stopped with slogans. As the spiritual pillar of the community, FGS's monastery provides spiritual support and inspiration to people through various activities.

Abbess Manshin also talked about her diverse roles in the community. She is not only the Abbess of FGS NZ but also serves as a patron of the Royal New Zealand Police College Wing 261, providing spiritual guidance, cultivation and support to the police officers. Abbess was also invited to design a tranquillity purification space for the local police station. During the epidemic, she cooperated with the police station to distribute rat kits to 97 schools in Auckland and Christchurch, demonstrating a model of policecommunity cooperation.

2024 ANZBYC Stay True to Initial Aspirations
On 5th July 2024, the 26 th Australia New Zealand Buddhist Youth Conference (ANZBYC) commenced at Fo Guang Shan Auckland under the theme Stay True to Initial Aspiration: Co-existence and Co-prosperity. The opening ceremony gathered nearly 230 participants, including FGS monastics, government officials, social elites and BLIA youth members from Australia and New Zealand, who came together to explore the significance of an initial aspiration and the essence of life.
Igniting the Light of Faith
FGS Buddhist Order's Head Abbot, Most Venerable Hsin Bau and BLIA YAD Executive Director Venerable Hui Chuan sent video messages encouraging participants to remember the Bodhi Mind and to practice for the benefit of sentient beings. Abbess Manshin quoted the Founder’s teaching that the initial aspiration is a commitment to oneself, inspiring young people to practice coexistence and bring light to the community.
Auckland Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson emphasised Buddhism's role in enriching New Zealand's culture, promoting harmony and enhancing
happiness. She thanked the Temple team for the beautiful garden and for nurturing responsible, compassionate citizens. Superintendent Shanan Gray highlighted the valued relationship with the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, inspiring youths to become future leaders.
Māori Elder Matua Jeff Tukua presented a karakia, alongside with a welcoming performance by Flat Bush Primary School. The Auckland YAD committee showcased a captivating Dunhuang dance and the uplifting theme song Open Your Heart, energising the ceremony.
The conference featured eminent leaders sharing insights on the power of initial aspirations.
Hon Maurice Williamson, with over 30 years serving in the New Zealand Parliament, shared his insights on changes and opportunities in the information age and his vision for future technological advancements. Editor Farida Master reflected on her love for writing and storytelling's power to connect with the communities. Paralympic gold medallist Michael Johnson inspired youths by sharing his resilient journey after a spinal cord injury at 22 from a car accident.
New Zealand Police reflected on their journey of defining their aspirations. Supt Gemmell joined NZP at 16 and aspired to protect youth and eradicate the bullying he faced in school. Snr Sgt LIN moved to New Zealand at 19, inspired by the police's dignified image in adverts. Snr Const Green participated in the FGS Auckland 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing for seven years, engaging local students with the Temple and affirming it as a platform for young people to express their passion and values.

Realising Initial Aspiration Through Faith
The panel featuring Abbess Manshin, BLIA Advisor Caroline ONG and Dr Eric CHAN discussed the teachings of the Founding Master Venerable Master Hsing Yun. They shared insights from their spiritual and professional journeys highlighting the significance of initial aspirations. BLIA Youths from Australia and New Zealand also shared stories inspired by the Master's wisdom.
Abbess Manshin shared her journey to Buddhism at the age of 14 through the profound truth of Cause + Conditions = Effect. Recalling her vow to keep up with the Venerable Master’s teachings at the FGS Tsung Lin Buddhist College, she emphasised the importance of becoming someone who is teachable. Over her threedecade-service in Oceania, Abbess Manshin has remained committed to the Founder’s vision of providing service, sharing positive values, and uplifting the New Zealand community.
Caroline ONG, currently a financial risk management director, reflected on her 24 years of service with Fo Guang Shan, progressing from a youth leader to a BLIA advisor. She credited the Temple for fostering her growth and shared how Venerable Master’s teachings—To delve deep, one must first be involved; to excel, one must first contribute —shaped the approach to her career and service. Caroline’s journey highlights the importance of taking initiative and contributing actively to realise one’s aspirations.
Dr Eric Chan delivered a three-day lecture series, emphasising that aspirations come from embracing one’s true self. He shared his journey from Nanhua University to earning a medical doctorate, illustrating how the Venerable Master's support helped him to thrive. He inspired the youths with the Master’s words, Through hardship, the future is built, urging them to face challenges with sincerity and faith, and to give back to the causes that have shaped their lives.

The 26 th ANZBYC concluded on 7th July 2024, with Chief Abbess Manko and BLIA Oceania Members attending via Zoom. 2024 ANZBYC Chairperson Ann Jo Chong thanked the Temple team for their hard work in making the conference successful. She emphasised that the Temple is our home and a guiding beacon. The conference concluded with a flag handover ceremony, symbolising the continuation of its mission.
The Abbess awarded certificates to interstate YAD subdivisions and encouraged the next host, Perth YAD, with the Founder’s phrase, Live Among the People, Create Collectively. List MP Nancy Lu called
the Fo Guang Shan Temple her Home and was thrilled to see Australian youth returning. Participants were fortunate to have Abbess Manshin and the Temple team guiding them with the true wisdom.
David Chen, representative from the Perth YAD expressed that the theme for next year is Finding Inner Peace in the Heart, inviting all to Perth and continuing the ANZBYC legacy.
Over the three-day conference, participants took part in a range of courses and discussions on various topics, enhancing their faith and progressing with the right attitude and mindset.

Fo Guang Shan New Zealand launched The 10th 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing from 30 th April to 29 th May 2024. Over the past decade, a total of 62 schools from New Zealand’s two major cities, Auckland and Christchurch, have participated with more than 33,000 teachers, students and parents joyfully visiting the Fo Guang Shan Temples to learn about the 3 Goodness & 4 Givings (3G4G) values. Among these, 20 were intermediate & secondary schools and 42 were primary schools, with 9 schools participating in more than five years.
The Temple’s specially prepared Three Goodness Rice was a hit with students, teachers and parents alike. Inspired by Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s method of frying rice with butter, Abbess Manshin guided the team in cooking fragrant fried rice using butter, potatoes, carrots, soy protein and chickpeas. Over the month-long event, the Temple used 500kg of rice, 200kg of potatoes and various other
ingredients to prepare the meal. Many students requested seconds, praising it as delicious! One student even ate eight bowls. Grateful for the free and healthy meals, students asked for the recipe, hoping their parents could recreate the dish at home.
This year, Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) New York Chapter President Jenny CHEN composed a theme song titled 3G4G for the 10th 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing , making it a highlight of the event. The song features a catchy, upbeat rhythm combined with rap and became a favourite among students and teachers. Hadassah Vaoa, a teacher from Finlayson Park School, remarked that her students loved the singing session and connected it to Samoan culture. Susan Nelson from Sunnyhills School praised the programme’s diversity, thanking the organisers for their thoughtful planning. She mentioned that the song was ideal for school assemblies. A parent, Kay, found the programme
rich and meaningful, wishing to display the 3G4G lyrics at home as a reminder of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings. Deputy Principal Andrew Flanagan of Baverstock Oaks School, was impressed by the song and looked forward to his students learning it.
With strong support from the New Zealand Police, 21 officers participated in this year’s programme. School Community Officers including Sen Const Matt Green, Sen Const Marina Phillips and Sen Const Pauline Orpet attended almost every event, enhancing students’ safety awareness and offering positive engagement with law enforcement. Elaine Skelton, a teacher at Finlayson Park School, appreciated the programme, especially the police interactions, which emphasised the importance of giving over taking—aligning with the school’s Anti-Bullying Week. Students found the officers kind and humorous, enjoying discussions about doughnuts and vaping while learning about safety.

Over 200 students from Willowbank School faced heavy rain on their way to the Temple, but their enthusiasm remained undeterred. Escorted by police officers, they joyfully exclaimed, We have finally arrived! Some students drew coloured wise words of the Venerable Master to take back home to share with their mothers, fostering bonding through meaningful interactions. The profound saying also planted seeds of goodness and beauty in the students’ hearts.
The New Zealand 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing has integrated into the community. Schools enjoy diverse cultural experiences in East Auckland, fostering inclusive thinking. It offers students a chance to learn about and understand each other. The values of 3G4G enrich students’ minds and perspectives, reminding them to be kind and to do good deeds.

FGS Christchurch Completes the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing
The 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing 2024 at Fo Guang Shan Christchurch welcomed almost 250 students and teachers from Wharenui Primary School, Te Komanawa Rowley School and Hornby High School on 15th, 16 th and 22nd May respectively. The education program aimed to promote cultural exchange based on the 3G4G values.
The NZP Senior Constable Brad Hagerty has supported the program for three consecutive years, educating students about the safety lesson. Snr Const Hagerty enjoyed the interactions and shared the values of respect and inclusivity with the students.
Niki Penny, Vice Principal of Te Komanawa Rowley School, said this was her third time leading students to the 3G4G education program. She emphasized the importance of this annual activity in helping students understand different cultures and reinforcing the social value of kindness. Karen Wheeler, Vice Principal of Hornby High School, shared that the 3G4G event is an annual trip for the school, giving students opportunities to explore new experiences and step out of their comfort zones. She appreciated the warm hospitality, noting that 3G4G values not only enrich students' knowledge but also help them become responsible citizens.

BLIA NZ Unites with Schools for VegRun Planting
Trees for a Greener
The BLIA North Island enthusiastically promoted the Pure Green Foundation’s global VegRun initiative, collaborating with four schools to host VegRun from 31st October to 20 th November 2024. Over 1,300 students participated, collectively running around 2,250 kilometres, equivalent to planting 450 trees. Embracing the aim You Run, I Plant Trees , the BLIA North Island Chapter committed to donating a tree for every 5 kilometres run by students, supporting New Zealand’s tree-planting organisation, Trees That Count
On 31st October, two VegRun events were held at Dawson and Mangere East Primary Schools, engaging nearly 900 students. President Evelyn KU of BLIA North Island and Venerable Nengchien, along with the Fo Guang team, supported the participants. Mangere East Primary invited BLIA members to their assembly on 4th November for the VegRun awards, expressing gratitude for promoting healthy, eco-friendly lifestyles.
Future
Venerable Nengchien explained the significance of VegRun to the students and introduced the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings philosophy of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Founder of Fo Guang Shan. The event began with a lively warm-up, during which students sang the 3G4G song.
Dawson Primary School, a regular participant in the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing for three consecutive years, joined VegRun for the first time. Principal Tarayn Zeier thanked the BLIA for initiating such a meaningful project. She noted that students weren’t running to compete but with the joyful mission of contributing a tree to the Earth for every lap completed. This purposeful approach brought excitement and pride to the students.
Mangere East Primary School, a first-time VegRun participant, rallied teachers, the Auckland City Council's animal management team, and the local community to promote environmental awareness. Principal
Stephanie Anich expressed joy in involving students, inspired by VegRun's health and environmental goals. She also thanked community volunteers for their warmth and encouragement, feeling connected to a shared spirit of care.
On 8th November, the third VegRun event at Ormiston Primary School in Auckland attracted 400 Year 3 and 4 students. The school has partnered with Fo Guang Shan Temple for nearly a decade, participating annually in education programs like the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing. This marked the school’s second year in VegRun, and as BLIA members arrived, students cheered and formed lotus gestures, chanting, We’re ready for VegRun!
Principal Heath McNeil thanked BLIA North Island for promoting student education and encouraging the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings for harmony with the Earth. Sports Director Edith Press inspired students to maintain a positive attitude
during the run, regardless of speed. Student Harper noted that while running was tiring, the idea of planting trees motivated their strength.
On 20 th November, 13 Ormiston Senior College students, guided by their teacher, faced wind and rain during a 5 km run at Barry Curtis Park. They contributed 100 trees to the cause, helping protect the environment of Earth.
The BLIA members supported and cheered on the students for each session, giving them auspicious apples and presenting Three Goodness Gifts to outstanding participants. This VegRun experience spread joy and fostered unity within the community.
Fo Guang Shan Christchurch and the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island have been actively promoting the Global Charity VegRun launched by the Pure Green Foundation. In 2024, the VegRun events were held at Merrin Primary School, Hornby High School and Te Komanawa Rowley School in Christchurch on 18th, 20 th September and 24th October respectively. Nearly a total of a thousand students had participated in these 3 Charity Runs. This charity initiative is in response to the call of You run, I plant a tree. For every 5 kilometres run, BLIA South Island will sponsor one tree. To date, a total of 240 trees have been pledged.
Hornby High School Deputy Principal Karen Wheeler and Assistant Principal Terry Mitchell showed strong support
for the VegRun event. The school has had good interactions with the FGS Temple over the years and this was the third year they participated in the VegRun. Karen and Terry thanked the Temple for the arrangement, noting the benefits for student’s physical and mental health, as well as its contribution to environmental protection. Merrin School joined the VegRun for the first time. Team leader teacher Roz Archbold appreciated that the event helped students contribute to environmental protection and understand the importance of caring for Mother Earth.
This marked the first collaboration between the Te Komanawa Rowley School and BLIA South Island for this fun run. Principal Graeme expressed strong support for the event. He
believed that teaching students to care for the Earth and cherishing resources through running is an excellent educational approach. Leading teacher Nicole Rowse was thrilled to see students actively striving to run for tree donations , showcasing a spirit of love and care for the environment.
Participating students expressed pride in their efforts to support ecological protection and appreciated the opportunity to work alongside BLIA members worldwide. The Temple provided bookmarks and pencils as souvenirs and presented the Three Acts of Goodness BLIA Cup Basketball to the schools, allowing everyone to share in the warmth and joy of participating in these meaningful activities.

Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland hosted the 8th Art Salon, which featured 180 local artists and showcased approximately 1,200 stunning artworks in two phases. The exhibition set new records in scale and impact. In addition, 0 sessions of live demonstrations and artist sharings were held, fostering meaningful engagement between the artists and the public. These interactive sessions were warmly received, contributing to a vibrant artistic atmosphere within the community.

On 25th September 2024, the 8th Art Salon of Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland hosted the opening ceremony. The exhibition featured more than 20 artworks by 2 local artists. The ribbon cutting ceremony was graced by Most Venerable Hsin Bau, the Head Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order, Chief Abbess Manko of FGS Oceania, Curator Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, Director General Kendra CHEN of the TECO in Auckland, Howick Local Board Chair Damian Light, Kaumatua Reverend Barry Bublitz, Area Commander
Inspector Rodney Honan of Counties Manukau East, Director Dolly TSAI of BLIA ceania Fellowship Meeting, along with representatives from the local government, police, education sectors, artists and the community.
The ceremony drew an enthusiastic audience of over 250 people. The diverse artworks were displayed indoors and extended to the outdoor corridor and garden, transforming the Temple into a vibrant art space. Artists gathered with their family and friends to witness the successful local fusion of art.
Most Venerable Hsin Bau noted that art knows no borders, serving as a language of the heart that can transcend cultural and religious divides to convey messages of truth, goodness and beauty. Most Venerable hoped that art would enrich everyone’s inner world and resonate with viewers, bringing harmony and joy.
Reverend Bublitz offered a karakia, highlighting how artworks reflect the talent and the pursuit of beauty and spirituality, with faith and belief nurturing the spirit.
Director General CHEN praised the Art Salon as an exceptional platform for artists to showcase their talents, commending Abbess Manshin and the team for their outstanding service and contributions to the community.
Damian Light remarked on the profound significance of art and culture within the community, noting that the annual Art Salon brings cultural vitality and diversity to the area, uniting local artists.
Inspector Honan admired the serene atmosphere of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple, describing it as a true haven for the mind. He also deeply respected the artists' time and effort in creating such exquisite works.
Ceramic artist Richard Monk expressed his honour in participating in exhibitions at the Temple multiple times, thanking Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery for allowing the public to connect with the artists through their passionate creations.
The Art Salon is a platform for cultural and spiritual exchange, noted Abbess Manshin, appreciating the artists for their vibrant contributions and inclusivity, adding that this year’s exhibition featured more artists and works than in previous years. Abbess wished that the public would draw from the wisdom and beauty conveyed through the artists’ creations.
Three special awards were presented during the opening ceremony: Art Salon Loyalty to Samantha Minnery and Serge Souslov. Excellence in Art Education Promotion Award to Vjekoslav Nemesh. Art Salon Popularity to Niels Nielsen, Patsy Clare, Irina Velman, Richard Monk, Bob Kay and Leda Daniel. The recipients expressed their gratitude, viewing the recognition as an affirmation of their creative efforts over the years, and as motivation to continue developing their art and create more inspiring works.
Another highlight was that artist Raymond G. Scott donated two kauri wood sculptures to the Art Gallery, which were received by Most Venerable Hsin Bau. A Peace and Auspicious Charm was also gifted to each artist by the Most Venerable as a token of blessing.

The 2024 Summer Art Salon Brilliantly Launched
Illuminating Creativity and Inspiring Minds
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Art Salon was held on 14th December 2024, with nearly 100 attendees present. Distinguished guests included Venerable Abbess Manshin, Curator of Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery; Kaumatua Tame Hauraki; Dr Jennifer Hauraki, Acting Clinical Head of Counties Manukau District; Lintao Y , Advisor of BLIA North Island Chapter Adele White, Howick Local Board Member; Kevin Simpkin, Chair Volunteer Manukau Area Committee of St John; local artists and art enthusiasts. This exhibition features an impressive collection of nearly 300 works from 5 artists.
Curator Abbess Manshin expressed deep gratitude to the artists for their creativity, enthusiasm and dedication to revitalising the Art Salon. Reflecting on the immense participation this year, the second session of the exhibition was elaborately arranged to fully manifest the artists’ creations and extend the enthusiasm and atmosphere the art evokes. Abbess quoted the Founder of the FGS Buddhist Order, Venerable Master once said, that the capable people can always simplify complexity and lift weights lightly. The Curator highlighted the tireless efforts of the team and the participating artists, whose contributions add colour, joy and inspiration to the community.
Adele White thanked all the seasoned artists who contributed to the exhibition, which conveyed the harmony of the multicultural intertwining within the community.
Sculptor Tom Somerville expressed his heartfelt appreciation by presenting Abbess Manshin with a bouquet of hydrangeas from his garden. He praised Fo Guang Shan’s breathtaking environment and applauded the Art Gallery team for elegantly and thoughtfully curating and showcasing all the artists’ works that transcend art. Diego Silva, a ceramic artist and first-time participant, shared his joy: I heard about this opportunity through an artist friend. I’m so impressed by the Gallery team’s professionalism. It’s truly an honour to be a part of this event.”
The community gathered beneath the Tang-style architecture of the Temple, once again fostering a remarkable fusion and exchange of Eastern and Western cultures. During this grand occasion, local artists and visitors shared the beauty of art and experienced a profound sense of inspiration. This exhibition also highlighted the exceptional contributions of the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery in promoting the localisation of art as a means of delivering positive and uplifting messages to the community.
n 23rd September, Prime Minister of New Zealand Christopher Luxon, sent a congratulatory letter to mark the successful launch of the 2024 Art Salon. The letter recognised the Art Gallery’s efforts in promoting local art and cultural exchange, showcasing a thriving diversity. The Prime Minister also extended his sincere blessings to the newly appointed Head Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Monastery, Most Venerable Hsin Bau, acknowledging his leadership and the Temple’s ongoing dedication to serving the local community.
In his letter, the Prime Minister congratulated Most Venerable Hsin Bau on his appointment as the 11th Head Abbot of Fo Guang Shan. He thanked Fo Guang Shan for its longstanding commitment to promoting peace and inclusivity, especially in championing the spirit of Coexistence & Coprosperity across the nation
and in social services. Luxon further highlighted that the Art Salon has become one of New Zealand’s major cultural events, embodying the spirit of giving in fostering selfless dedication and community connection. The Prime Minister also praised Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ and her team for their enduring work in inspiring service.
Abbess expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s supportive letter, stating that in the post-pandemic era, art serves as a source of comfort and hope for people’s hearts. Abbess likened the artists’ creations to a rainbow, bringing vibrant colour to the community and enabling the public to experience the power of beauty and spiritual fulfilment. Abbess affirmed that Fo Guang Shan will continue to foster harmony in the local community with wisdom and compassion, enriching the development of New Zealand’s culture and arts.

Artists’ Insight Forum
Creating a Pure Land of Art and Mind
During the 8th Art Salon Exhibition, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland hosted two sessions of the Artists’ Insight Forum. The Curator Abbess Manshin of FGY Art Gallery NZ and various artists explored the connection between the Temple and art, the gallery’s unique role within the community, and the impact of the Art Salon on local culture. Together, they presented a rich, in-depth dialogue on art and spirituality for the audience.
The first session was on 2nd November, featuring painter William Robert Boyd, resin artist Leda Daniel, mixed media artist Logan Bow, Marion Gordon-Flower and photographer Agnès Desombiaux-Sigley. The artists shared their experiences and insights, agreeing that the fusion of Fo Guang Shan’s tranquil atmosphere with art provides an inspiring environment where their work can be fully appreciated and respected. Painter Boyd described the Temple as a safe, creative space free from judgment. He expressed gratitude for the
gallery’s role in providing a platform that enriches their spiritual essence journey.
Resin artist Daniel, who has exhibited for four consecutive years, appreciated the Art Salon team for their professionalism, noting how the exhibition has become increasingly diverse and inclusive, reflecting its commitment to the community. Bow, a 20-year-old mixed media artist exhibiting for the first time, and his family were deeply impressed by the integration of art and architecture, observing how the space fosters a strong community bond, transcending the concept of a traditional art exhibition. Artists Marion and Agnès aimed for their creations to guide viewers into new realms, fostering a transformative experience that shifts focus from daily routines to what truly matters in life.
The second session held on th November featured painters Holly Clarke, Vanessa Narbey, Sherrill
Bentley, Ian Anderson, ceramic artist Richard Monk and Auckland Vintage Car President Shaaran Price. Artist Clarke expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “Everyone at the Temple is incredibly welcoming. I deeply appreciate Fo Guang Shan for bringing creativity and warmth to the community and touching the hearts of all. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience.”
Curator Abbess Manshin reflected on her 30 years of service in Australia and New Zealand, emphasising her dedication to creating a space for visitors to rediscover their inner potential and strength. Abbess commended the artists’ perceptive insights and expressed gratitude for their collaboration with the Temple. Together, the values of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings (3G4G) by the Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun have brought to life, enhancing both community cohesion and cultural vibrancy.

The Summer Forest Joint Exhibition
A Revitalised Outlook
Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Christchurch presented The Summer Forest art exhibition from 15th February to 3th April 2025. Continuing the connections established through the Auckland Art Salon, this exhibition brought together nearly 180 works from past participating artists, uniting their creativity in Christchurch.
The Summer Forest exhibition allowed artists to create profoundly moving works that promoted culture through aesthetics. Visitors found resonance within the artworks, experiencing the warmth and power of artistic expression. The exhibition featured diverse artistic forms, including
painting, coffee art, ceramics, copper wire, resin and textile arts, showcasing the distinctive vibrancy of New Zealand’s local art.
The curator of the FGY Art Gallery NZ Abbess Manshin upheld the vision of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of FGS, in sharing kind values through art. Abbess continued to provide a platform for New Zealand artists to share their creativity and talents at FGY Art Gallery Chch. Visitors appreciated the exhibited
works and offered their support through active engagement, adding warmth and encouragement to the event.
Gayel Marquet, Chairperson of Friends of FGY Art Gallery Chch, praised the exhibition’s video presentation, highlighting the collective efforts of teams from Auckland and Christchurch. The dedication and contributions of the Temple team and volunteers were truly inspiring.

The Cultivating the Heart – FGS Monastic Art Exhibition held its Ribbon Cutting ceremony on 25th September 2024, at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland. Distinguished guests included Head Abbot Hsin Bau of FGS Buddhist Order, Chief Abbess Manko of FGS Oceania, Curator Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, Director General Kendra CHEN of the TECO in Auckland, Chairman Damian Light of the Howick Local Board, Kaumatua Reverend Barry Bublitz, Deputy Chairperson and Elder of the Pou Tangata Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Community Development Trust Fund, Area Commander Inspector Rodney Honan of the Manukau East Police District, BLIA ceania Fellowship President Dolly TSAI, President Evelyn K of the BLIA North Island Chapter, as well as representatives from politics, education and the art sectors.
Head Abbot Hsin Bau highlighted that the works were crafted by Fo Guang Shan monastics. He emphasised that art shares messages of compassion,
reflecting human kindness and wisdom. He hoped viewers would see the monastics' growth in faith and compassion through the art and invited the artists to share their insights.
Chief Abbess Manko thanked attendees for their support and highlighted the role of cultural arts in reflecting positive values. She mentioned the Diamond Sutra artwork by Nan Tien Temple monastics, made with transparent acrylic, symbolising emptiness and life's transient nature. She invited viewers to appreciate the beauty and meaning of the artwork.
Curator Abbess Manshin remarked that the monastics' art not only demonstrated their technical skills and creativity but also reflected their
inner wisdom and spiritual dedication. The Abbess introduced Abbot Hsin Bau's calligraphy piece, Ruyi—As You Wish, wishing all who encounter can discover the treasures within their hearts.
The exhibition showcases calligraphy, painting, photography and more, honouring Venerable Master Hsing Yun and his teachings. It also highlights the innovation and dedication of Fo Guang Shan’s monastics and devotees to promoting Buddhist culture through art.

The Opening of The Journeying Further Joint Exhibition
At FGY Art Gallery Christchurch
On 4th May 2024, the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Christchurch unveiled the Journeying Further Joint Exhibition. Following the success of the Resurgence Exhibition, FGY Art Gallery once again collaborated with local artists to offer their artistic creations for public viewing. Nearly 30 artists and Friends of FGY attended the opening ceremony.
The Journeying Further Joint Exhibition primarily showcases contemporary New Zealand art to
enhance the public’s appreciation of artworks through the diversity of exhibited items. The exhibition features 0 artists with nearly 0 pieces of artwork, including paintings, sculptures and ceramics. Through their unique creations, these artists present to the public their thinking and breakthroughs at various stages of their lives.
Hugh Rickard expressed his gratitude for the friendly and professional service rendered by FGY Art Gallery
and the Team. He acknowledged that besides the beautiful venue, the continuous support from the Gallery serves as a driving force for the artists to advance further. Ceramic artists Jane McCulla and Penny De Jong expressed their honour to share their creative concepts with art enthusiasts at the art gallery. They felt privileged to interact with the community through their work. Visitors were amazed by each piece of artwork and expressed great appreciation for the artist's creativity.
On 10 th November 2024, the Soaring through the Sky—Dunhuang Art Exhibition opening ceremony was held at FGY Art Gallery Christchurch. It was organized by the Dunhuang Academy China, a comprehensive research institution responsible for managing the Mogao Caves in Gansu Province, China. The exhibition was jointly hosted by the Consulate General of the People s Republic of China in Christchurch and the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Christchurch. Distinguished guests at the opening included Consul General of the People s Republic of China in Christchurch Madame HE Ying, Curator of FGY Art Gallery NZ Abbess Manshin, Christchurch City Councilor Victoria Henstock, Honorary Chairman of the New Zealand China Friendship Society, The Right Hon Sir David Carter, with nearly 200 guests present. The exhibition was also reported by China’s inhua News Agency and The Press, the largest English newspaper in NZ’s South Island.

Dunhuang Art Exhibition Opening at FGY Art Gallery CHCH
Touching Both Eastern and Western Audience with Chinese Grotto Art
No. 2 0 and No. 25 , early Tang Bodhisattva murals from Cave No. 5 , the Sui Dynasty’s Three Hares Flying in the Heavens mural from Cave No. 402 and the middle Tang mural depicting the Celestial Rebound Pipa (Chinese lute) from Cave No. 2. In addition to the murals, the silk reproductions on the beams enhanced the peaceful atmosphere.
Consul General HE Ying’s speech emphasized that the Dunhuang caves, with a history of over 00 years, are well regarded as the world’s largest and longest preserved treasure trove of cave art. Culture serves as a bridge that transcends borders and connects hearts , she said. She expressed gratitude to the FGY Art Gallery team for providing such an elegant venue, which allowed Dunhuang’s cultural radiance to be vividly showcased, deepening the local community’s understanding of Chinese Art and enhancing the cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Curator Abbess Manshin noted that the FGY Art Gallery is a gift to Christchurch from Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of FGS Buddhist Order. The architecture of the Christchurch Temple is inspired by
the Longmen Grottoes, embodying the Buddhist concept of emptiness , with a design that can be grand or humble, visible or invisible, light or heavy— symbolizing boundless potential and vitality. Abbess expressed special thanks to the Consulate General for bringing Dunhuang’s treasures to the Gallery, enabling both parties to showcase a magnificent chapter of Chinese history.
City Councilor Victoria Henstock shared her thoughts that she was honored to witness the beauty of Dunhuang’s treasures in Christchurch. While admiring the artwork, she reflected on the importance of preserving precious religious cultural heritage and the role art plays in fostering understanding and connection between people.
During the opening, the traditional piece Farewell at Yangguan Pass was performed by the musicians from the Beijing National Orchestra, specially invited by the Consulate General. The piece allowed attendees to experience the profoundness of Chinese history and the power of Buddhist art through music.

Dunhuang Art Exhibition at FGY Auckland Timeless Treasures Reimagined
The Soaring Through the Sky : Dunhuang Cultural Art Exhibition was officially launched on 20 th February 2025 at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland, hosted by the Dunhuang Academy and co-organised by the Chinese Consulate-General and the Chinese Cultural Centre in Auckland, presented by Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland. The opening was graced by Consul General CHEN Shijie, Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown, Curator Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ and FGY Art Gallery NZ, Director WANG Jianwen of the Chinese Cultural Centre, Executive Director Alistair Crozier of the NZ China Council, Vice Chairman Neville Cant of the NZ China Friendship Society and Auckland Councillors Maurice Williamson and Sharon Stewart. About 150 distinguished guests from various sectors participated in the opening,
Consul General CHEN Shijie highlighted Dunhuang art as a treasure of Chinese civilization and part of the world’s heritage. This exhibition acts as a cultural bridge, fostering appreciation between Eastern and Western civilisations while reflecting New Zealand’s cultural diversity and free trade values.
Curator Abbess Manshin sincerely thanked the organisers and coorganisers for supporting the exhibition. Abbess emphasised that the murals depict the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, disciples, celestial beings, patrons and guardian animals, symbolising the equal Buddhanature. This indicates that the mind, the Buddha, and all beings are fundamentally no different from one another, reminding the audience of their original nature.
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown praised the Dunhuang Art Exhibition as a vital cultural exchange, showcasing the significance of Buddhism and Chinese art. He highlighted that such events enhance international dialogue and mutual understanding, which is crucial for global cultural growth.
The one-month exhibition vividly brings Dunhuang to life through 30 murals, four sculptures and six miniature cave replicas. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore history, ignite inspiration and cultivate purity in our hearts.
The Blossoming Seasons Watercolor Painting Exhibition by Taiwanese artist Hua-Wei LAI was showcased at Fo Guang Yuan (FGY) Art Gallery Christchurch from th September 2024 to th February 2025. It was then displayed at FGY Art Gallery Auckland from 18th February 2025. The exhibition attracted visitors from all walks of life. Artist LAI is known for capturing everyday observations and experiences through watercolor. His first exhibition at FGY Art Gallery Christchurch in 20 , Life of Leisure, was met with high praise.
LAI returned to New Zealand on 2 th January 2024 after five years. He visited the FGS Temples in Auckland and Christchurch and held an art sharing session at the Auckland Temple with BLIA members,sharing insights into his artistic process and sources of inspiration. Drawing from his travels across New Zealand’s
cities, countryside and harbors, LAI captured his impressions with his paintbrush.
The Blossoming Seasons collection highlights New Zealand’s natural and cultural landscapes. Featured works included paintings of FGS Auckland and Christchurch Temples, Auckland’s urban streets, the harbor of Akaroa and Christchurch’s historic landmarks. The artworks capture nature's beauty and the warmth of daily life, presenting New Zealand as a pure and tranquil land.
The exhibition features original hand-painted artworks alongside large-format posters to showcase the artist’s artistic skills. Visitors praised the vibrant paintings for showcasing the beauty of nature, bringing a sense of peace and inspiring appreciation for the present moments.

Building Friendships Through Art and Aesthetics
On 4th May and th August 2024, Abbess Manshin of Fo Guang Shan NZ, along with around 20 members of the BLIA North Island Chapter, visited the studios of artists Richard Monk and Ian Anderson. n 2 th June, organised by Subchapter 2 Deputy President Susan Peng, eight committee members participated in a ceramic workshop conducted by Richard Monk. They delved into the ceramic creation process, enhancing their understanding of art and deepening their appreciation for aesthetics in everyday life.

connected with the Temple during the 2022 Art Salon at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland. They expressed gratitude for the Temple's support of the arts and have developed a bond with it. As regular participants in Fo Guang Shan’s activities, the artists have shared their creative philosophies and noted the harmony between the Temple’s humanistic atmosphere and their artistic ideals. They emphasised how art fosters friendships and enables aesthetic exchanges within the community.
Both artists expressed gratitude to Fo Guang Shan for its support of the arts
and discussed the challenges that led to the establishment of their studios. They highlighted the significance of remaining aligned with their original vision, which integrates culture, art and education, which has helped them navigate various obstacles.
Abbess Manshin encouraged the artists to approach life with wisdom and maintain the right perspective. Abbess emphasised the importance of discernment—knowing when to act and when to refrain—and inspired everyone to stay grounded by staying true to their initial aspirations and using them as motivation.

2024 Chocolatte International Food Festival
On 22nd June 2024, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch and BLIA South Island hosted the 5th Chocolatte International Food Festival, attracting nearly 20 local stalls and over 1,800 visitors to enjoy coffee, chocolate and specialty foods.

The event featured a variety of activities and attractions. Outdoor stalls offered international cuisine including traditional handmade cookies, cheesy pasta, the famous SHE chocolate, French pastries such as canelés and a selection of delightful cakes and desserts. One of the highlights was the sugar painting stall, showcasing a national intangible heritage of Chinese culture. This attracted both adults and children who watched and purchased the sugar painting. The organisers invited Ken SHI, a well-known judge of New Zealand coffee latte art competitions to conduct a coffee seminar. His passionate sharing allowed attendees to learn about the coffee flavours and tasting various rich and aromatic coffee blends.
Visitors were drawn to the sutra transcription area to practice calligraphy and find inner peace. Many made light offerings, paid homage and made wishes in the Shrine. Roleplaying activities were organised by English Dharma Service members, who transformed into wizards from Harry Potter movies and fairies from Peter Pan and interacted with the crowd.
FGS NZ Venerable Abbess Manshin led the Auckland YAD team to assist with the event and personally guided volunteers in conducting activities effectively. President of BLIA South Island, Bernie SIEW expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of the BLIA members in making the event successful. The Temple distributed nearly 1,200 copies of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's Wise Words.
The stall owners and attendees appreciated the thorough organisation by the Temple team that created a lively and joyous atmosphere for community interaction. FGS Christchurch's Chocolatte International Food Festival, combining cultural arts with tradition and modernity, has gained a strong reputation in Christchurch as one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year.

On 12 th May 2024, the FGS Christchurch Water Drop Cafe held an English-style afternoon tea event to celebrate Mother’s Day, attracting almost a hundred residents.
This year’s highlight included traditional British afternoon tea snacks, with the Temple team inviting a professional pastry chef to make classic French canelés. They also introduced artist-inspired mini pizzas. These sweet and savoury delicacies were a hit with the guests, many of whom joyfully shared their surprise and delight on social media.
The attendees enjoyed the delicious afternoon tea in a warm and cosy
atmosphere, feeling the blessings from the team. One table of regulars had made reservations for three consecutive years, celebrating Mother’s Day from when she was pregnant to now bringing her mother and child, making it a significant tradition.
The Water Drop Café at FGS Christchurch has been hosting the Mother’s Day afternoon tea for many years, innovating the menu each year and providing quality service. The team hopes to connect with people through delicious and healthy food earning them a great reputation in the community.

The Mindfulness through Chan, Tea & Art
On 24th November 2024, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch held the Mindfulness through Chan, Tea & Art Tea Meditation event. Nearly 80 local participants, including doctors, educators, consultants, engineers and university students attended. The Tea Meditation practitioners who conducted the event involved seven members from the English Dharma Service. 10 tea banquets were set up in the Buddha Hall, providing participants to experience the spiritual journey of tea, Chan and art in a serene environment. This event was organized primarily for local Kiwis, aimed to help participants connect with the Dharma and experience the beauty of Chan.
The event began with Venerable Miao Guang’s English meditation podcast, guiding attendees to a relaxed and focused state. Tea practitioners
then demonstrated Tea Meditation, highlighting the beauty, aroma and taste of tea through a chain of mindful and delicate steps. Participants experienced the tranquillity and meditative state of the body, mind and soul. The melodious Guqin a 3000 years traditional Chinese musical string instrument) was played during the Tea Meditation session, and classic Chan stories were also shared with the participants to inspire awakening. The process highlighted that drinking tea not only could quench thirst but also a meditative practice that fosters mindfulness and inner balance.
FGS NZ Abbess Manshin emphasized that Tea Meditation enables us to feel the joy of Chan in everyday life. One must learn to take care of body and mind at all times. Letting gratitude fill our hearts while enjoying tea softens
our hearts. Through the connection of a cup of tea, we can become aware of the sensations experienced by our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. At the same time, drinking tea allows us to practice mindfulness in daily life and awaken the intrinsic nature within us.
The Abbess's interaction with the Tea Meditation practitioners not only ease their inner tension but also enriched their hearts with the Buddha Dharma. This spiritual journey provided both wisdom and practical tools, preparing attendees to return to everyday life with greater mindfulness. Many participants expressed heartfelt thanks and touching feedback, describing the event as a joyful and moving experience. It could be likened to the saying: A drop of water from Caoxi, when sprinkled on the food, will bring immeasurable good taste!

n th December 2024, FGS Auckland hosted a Mindfulness Tea Meditation session at the Venerable Master Hsing Yun One-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition Hall with 50 artists participating.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ guided the participants in savouring tea with a meditative and inspiring heart-sharing and leading a feast for the mind and spirit.
The event began with a mindfulness meditation session led by Venerable Miaoguang. Participants found calmness and relaxation as they settled into a focused state of mind. The Tea Meditation session unfolded gracefully with steps including flower offerings to the Buddha, appreciating the aroma and appearance of tea, silent tasting, savouring the spring’s sweetness and admiring the tea leaves. These steps illustrated how Chan is present in everyday life, allowing attendees to purify their body,
speech and mind, and return to a state of inner peace and serenity.
Abbess Manshin shared insights with the participants: “Tea is one of the Ten Offerings in Buddhism. Tea and Chan help us realise that Chan is present in life and every mindful moment. Through a single cup of tea, we perceive our sensory responses and appreciate the abundance of conditions that come together, cultivating gratitude and a soft heart.”
Abbess encouraged attendees to refine their focus, stillness, and mindfulness through tea meditation, awakening their potential and enriching their lives with quality and wisdom.
Artist Jenny Henry shared her joy at finding a tranquil space amidst the city’s hustle, where she could focus on drinking tea and feel her mind and body cleansed by the Abbess’s
wise teachings. Artist Diego Silva, attending a Tea Meditation for the first time, expressed his enjoyment of the serene atmosphere. Hannah Vaughan expressed gratitude for the event, describing it as a profoundly moving cultural experience that recharged her mind and body. Many attendees were inspired by the meditative elegance of the tea practitioners and expressed interest in learning a spirit of mindfulness.
As Founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun once said, “Chan is not found in tea but in the hearts of those who practice Chan. When they drink tea, they perceive the vastness of the universe and the essence of universal compassion.” The Auckland Temple Tea Meditation enriched the lives of participants, offering a transformative experience and a glimpse into the art of Tea and Chan—a journey to a tranquil and unencumbered state of being.

Support Cancer Society with Vintage Car Club
On 25th August 2024, Fo Guang Shan Temple Auckland hosted an Open Day to foster community relations. The event welcomed over 1,500 visitors from the local community. On the annual Daffodil Day, the Temple collaborated with several vintage car clubs to raise funds for the Cancer Society, spreading the warm spirit of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings throughout the community.
The event was collaborated with the Auckland Veteran and Vintage Car Club and featured participation from the Jowett Car Club, Austin Car Club, Auckland Morris Minor Car Club and Rover Car Club. ver 0 antique vehicles from 24 different brands were
showcased, captivating attendees to photograph the cars. One of the oldest cars was from 0 , which withstood 23 years of history. The organisers invited visitors to ride in a 0 -year-old Renault vintage car. This unique experience, akin to a journey through time, attracted long queues of participants.
The President of the Auckland Veteran and Vintage Car Club, Shaaran Price highlighted that 3 branches of the club participated in the fundraising event, contributing from the North Island to the South Island. She expressed her deep gratitude to the Temple for providing the venue, noting the Temple's beautiful environment
and the warm assistance of BLIA members. Jodi Tomlin, the club’s secretary, also extended her thanks to the Temple for its full support and expressed her appreciation to the support from the public.
As the event concluded, the Temple Team lined up to bid farewell and applauded the vintage car club members for their splendid display, which enriched the community’s cultural life and provided support for cancer society. The car club members are excited to return at the Cherry Blossom Festival in November.

FGS NZ Celebrates Cherry Blossoms
With Thousands Spreading Joyful Seeds
The annual Cherry Blossom Festival at Fo Guang Shan Auckland Temple was held on th November 2024, attracting over 3,000 attendees to the joyful festival. The organisers prepared activities including the Baby and Children’s Blessing Ceremony, artists’ live demonstration and sharing, local market stalls, a vintage car show and mindfulness tea meditation.
In the Art Salon exhibition, 5 local artists hosted live demonstrations and workshops, showcasing diverse creative styles ranging from oil painting, ceramics, watercolours and more. Visitors were captivated by the artistic process and expressed admiration for the displays. The day featured the Artists Insight Forum, with the Curator Abbess Manshin of FGY Art Gallery NZ, painters Holly Clarke, Vanessa Narbey, Sherrill Bentley, Ian Anderson, ceramic artist Richard Monk and Auckland Vintage Car President Shaaran Price. The discussion delved into their experiences and connections with FGY Art Gallery.
Artist Holly Clarke expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying “Everyone at the Temple is incredibly welcoming. I deeply appreciate Fo Guang Shan for bringing creativity and warmth to the community and touching the hearts of all. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience.”
A vibrant local market was held at the Temple, featuring 28 vendors offering unique vegetarian delicacies, handmade goods and artistic creations. The market buzzed with activity as crowds flowed in continuously. Stallholders were busy attending to customers, beamed with joy and some food items sold out quickly. Meanwhile, the Mindfulness Tea Meditation took place at the Cloud Corner, where tea practitioners guided participants through meditation, flower offerings, and tea appreciation of the beauty of tea leaves. Participants shared that the tea meditation brought them inner peace and calm amid the busyness of life.
In addition, four vintage car clubs from Auckland joined the celebration, including the Auckland Vintage Car Club, Rover Car Club, Auckland Triumph Car Club and Austin Flying A’ Car Club, showcasing a stunning display of classic vehicles. President Sharaan Price of the Auckland Vintage Car Club appreciates the Temple’s ongoing community engagement events. She highlighted the Temple support for the Daffodil Day event in August 2024, which raised funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society, spreading positivity and joy within the community.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, quoted the teachings of the Founder Venerable Master saying, The future world will be one of service. Abbess thanked the team for serving the public with joy and dedication, creating happiness and fulfilment for all who visit the Temple.
On 14th December, Fo Guang Shan Auckland hosted the Renewal of Matrimonial Vows Blessing Ceremony. Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ officiated the event, blessing 20 Bodhi family pairs. More than 50 guests joined to witness this auspicious occasion,
during which families received the Buddha’s blessings for happiness, harmony and wisdom.
The Main Shrine was beautifully adorned with elegant archways and vibrant red floral arrangements, creating a warm and festive atmosphere. Abbess Manshin led the recitation of the Heart Sutra and read the Prayer for Bodhi Families by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of Fo Guang Shan. The families’ vows before the Buddha and the exchange of heartfelt gifts symbolised their mutual support and gratitude. Performances by the energetic Auckland YAD delighted the audience, filling the hall with joy.
Abbess emphasised the importance of cultivating trust, correct understanding and respect relationships. Quoting from the Venerable Master’s teachings
on The Way of Husband and Wife which is “A husband should be the best husband—cheerful and helpful with household chores. A wife should be the best wife—wise, virtuous and orderly in managing the home.” Abbess wished for all families to practise faith as their foundation, supporting each other on the path of enlightenment and creating harmonious families.
Ms YAN, the mother of BLIA North Island Chapter Secretary Muyang, spoke on behalf of the parents. She expressed gratitude to the Temple for the care extended to her son and daughter-in-law. She was overjoyed to see her son grow into a responsible and compassionate individual under the Temple’s guidance. She encouraged all families to remain true to their values, spreading warmth and light across the world.
The FGY Art Gallery Auckland hosted the Art Buffet on 2nd November 2024 at Cloud Corner, attracting nearly 150 artists, Friends of FGY Art Gallery, art enthusiasts and community members attended with joy.
Earlier that same morning, the Art Buffet took place at Cloud Corner. Nearly 150 artists, Friends of FGY Art Gallery, art enthusiasts and community members attended with joy. Under the guidance of the Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, the team carefully arranged a refined venue, offering exquisite refreshments and a lively performance by YAD members. The
event beautifully combined art with vegetarian cuisine, creating a highquality cultural feast.
The organising team also arranged a guided tour of the Art Salon exhibition. Additionally, artists conducted interactive live demonstrations and workshops, sharing creative insights and engaging with the audience. Many artists attended with their families for the first time, exploring the exhibition and expressing admiration for the organisers' meticulous arrangements. The event left a lasting impression, offering a refreshing cultural and artistic experience.

2024 FGS NZ Buddha’s Birthday Celebration
Cultivating Social Harmony
On 13th April 2024, the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland hosted the annual Buddha’s Birthday Celebration for World Peace. The ceremony was led by Abbess of FGS NZ Venerable Manshin. Distinguished guests from various religious backgrounds participated including Māori elder Kaumātua Tame Hauraki, Dean of Auckland the Very Reverend Anne Mills, and Catholic representative Rev Deacon Chris Sullivan, who each offered prayers for the ceremony. Notable attendees included President Evelyn K of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) North Island Chapter, Director General Kendra CHEN of the Taipei Economic and Cultural ffice in Auckland, Members of Parliament Nancy LU and Rima Nakhle, Auckland Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson, Councillor Hon Maurice Williamson and Sharon Stewart, Chair of the Howick Local
Board Damian Light, Superintendent Shanan Gray and Inspector Rod Honan together with nearly 500 people from diverse sectors, including religious, political, police, arts, media, schools and the community.
The BLIA Young Adult Division performed a lion dance to welcome the statue of Prince Siddhartha. Additionally, students from Papatoetoe Intermediate School sang the New Zealand national anthem and performed a Haka dance. The FGS Auckland Choir performed hymns celebrating the birth of Buddha and expressed gratitude to the Founding Master for bringing the beautiful Temple to New Zealand.
Abbess Manshin addressed the Temple’s efforts in sharing the Three Goodness values locally. The purpose of returning to one’s roots and true
nature is to serve the community. Abbess expressed her wishes for New Zealand to thrive with peace.
President Evelyn KU thanked Abbess and the Temple for leading the community in building a Pure Land on Earth through diverse cultural, educational and charitable activities, helping to purify minds and the land.
MP Nancy LU conveyed gratitude from Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, acknowledging Fo Guang Shan s significant contributions to the community and cooperation with the police. Deputy Mayor Simpson praised the Temple for infusing Auckland, one of the world’s most culturally diverse cities, with harmony, peace and joy. Director General CHEN highlighted the need for the wisdom and light of the Dharma in today’s world.
Chairman Light and Inspector Honan also praised the Temple’s supportive role in fostering community harmony.
Editor Farida Master of Eastlife described the Temple as an oasis of harmony and a cultural sanctuary,
appreciating its efforts in building a supportive society.
The celebration also featured a Baby and Children s Blessing Ceremony, local market stalls, a One-Stroke Calligraphy exhibition by the Venerable Master, a Prince Siddhartha
Exhibition and tea meditation. The New Zealand Health Department provided free flu vaccinations at the event, recognising Temple’s support of the Asian community’s VA Heroes initiative. The day was filled with auspiciousness and joy.

Nourishes the Pure Land of the Human World
On 20th April 2024, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Christchurch hosted the annual Buddha s Birthday Celebration for World Peace, with nearly 800 people in attendance. The ceremony was led by the Abbess of FGS NZ Venerable Manshin, Reverend Canon Ben Truman, Dean of Christchurch Cathedral and Dr Surinder Tandon, President of the Christchurch Multicultural Council. Attendees in the temple offered flowers to the Buddha and bathed the statue of Prince Siddhartha to pray for inner purity and societal harmony.
Distinguished guests included the Mayor of Christchurch Mr Phil Mauger, Consul General of the People s Republic of China in Christchurch
Madame HE Ying, MP for Wigram Hon Dr Megan Woods, District Commander of the Canterbury Superintendent Tony Hill, the World Peace Bell Association
Christchurch representative David Bolam-Smith, the University of Canterbury Professor Mike Reid, artists Tricia Morant, Hugh Rickard and the President of BLIA South Island, Bernie SIEW were in attendance.
The Temple prepared special auspicious apples as a blessing for everyone s peace and happiness.
Abbess Manshin addressed the BLIA member’s efforts in building affinities and benefiting life through making connections, joyfully serving and practicing the Noble Eightfold Path, aiming to cultivate a pure mind and create a peaceful society.
President Bernie expressed gratitude for the guidance of Abbess and the Temple, as well as the dedicated support of the volunteers, emphasising that the happiness and peace of all
humanity are the goals and direction of the BLIA members. Learning from the Buddha s spirit of respect and tolerance is about finding unity in diversity, practicing equality with an attitude of mutual understanding.
Mayor Phil Mauger, MP Hon Megan Wood and Superintendent Tony Hill delivered speeches expressing gratitude and thanking FGS for its continuous efforts to promote Buddhist culture, education and charity, playing a significant role in enhancing multicultural integration in South Island NZ and actively spreading the ideals of world peace.
The event also featured BLIA YAD dance performances, Baby Children Blessing Ceremony, Tea Meditation sessions, vegetarian food fair, local market stalls and lucky draw, wishing everyone to bring peace and joy home.

On 18th January 2025, Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Auckland warmly hosted its Annual Reunion Dinner, bringing together hundreds of BLIA members to welcome the new year with blessings. The event was graced by Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, with distinguished guests including Director General Kendra CHEN of the Taipei Economic and Cultural ffice TEC in Auckland, Chairman Damian Light of the Howick Local Board, Member Adele White, NZP Senior Sergeant Anson LIN and Journalist Farida Master. In addition, President Yulin KU of BLIA North Island, Advisor Sally Wong, Advisor Jennifer LIANG and members participated together to wish for an auspicious and fulfilling year ahead.
The ceremony commenced with a blessing led by the Abbess, followed by the reading of the Prayer for Society by the Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. A video showcasing the year’s activities at FGS Auckland was presented, drawing applause
for the Temple’s service to the local community. Abbess Manshin shared the New Year Blessing words from the Venerable Master: Keep Going, The Future will be Bright, which serves as a reminder that courage and progress are the keys to overcoming challenges. Moreover, the Abbess presented attendees with New Year’s auspicious red packets and spring couplets inscribed with the Venerable Master’s blessings, encouraging all to embrace a bright and virtuous mindset in the coming year and embody the spirit of Living 300 Years , as taught by the Venerable Master.
Expressing her gratitude, Ms Kendra CHEN remarked on her participation over the past three years and praised the Temple s resilience and vitality. Chair Damian Light expressed his admiration for FGS Auckland. He commended the Abbess and the Temple community, stating, “Fo Guang Shan is an extraordinary organisation because it embodies the power of unity. The Venerable
Master’s philosophy of Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings has an ever-growing impact on our local communities.”
SSgt Anson LIN thanked the Temple for fostering a peaceful society and committed to continuing the partnership between the New Zealand Police and FGS Auckland. Journalist Farida Master called the Temple a haven for the Buddhist community, local artists, police officers and volunteers, noting its ability to unite people through compassion and wisdom, bringing light and hope to all.
The event was enlivened by a dynamic performance from the BLIA YAD Auckland, filling the hall with joy and camaraderie. The guests enjoyed a feast of delicious vegetarian delicacies and exchanged heartfelt blessings, marking the beginning of an auspicious New Year in New Zealand, imbued with gratitude and joy.
The year-end Reunion Dinner of Fo Guang Shan Christchurch was held on 25th January 2025. Over one hundred distinguished guests and Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) members attended the gathering, including FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, Consul General of the ConsulateGeneral of the People’s Republic of China in Christchurch Madame HE Ying, former New Zealand Detective Superintendent Virginia Le Bas, Police Officer Bob and others.
The event began with the chanting of the Medicine Buddha Sutra. Abbess Manshin led the blessing ceremony and read the Prayer for the Community by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founding Master of FGS Buddhist Order. At the event, the Head Abbot of FGS, the Most Venerable Hsin Bau, sent New Year greetings to all attendees via the big screen.
Drawing on the Founding Master’s blessings message, Keep Going and the Future is Bright, Abbess Manshin encouraged everyone to move forward bravely towards a future filled with hope. Abbess explained that bravery is not about displaying strength or competing for victory; it is about practising great vows, demonstrating great compassion, contributing selflessly and developing a grand plan to benefit the masses.
Consul General HE Ying thanked the Temple for its contributions to multicultural development over the past year—especially in November 2024, when the Consulate General and Fo Guang Yuan (FGY) Art Gallery Christchurch collaborated to host the Dunhuang Art Exhibition, which attracted more than 3,000 visitors in one month. The exhibition had a significant positive impact, and
the Consul General expressed her gratitude to the Temple team while looking forward to further cooperative opportunities.
President of BLIA South Island James LOW thanked the team and the former BLIA South Island Committees for successfully organising various activities over the years. He promised that the new BLIA Committees will uphold the FGS spirit of Three Acts of Goodness, Four Givings and Five Harmonies to serve the community and illuminate the value of life.
Dishes for the Reunion Dinner were prepared by the Temple. The fourcourse set menus, each carried infinite blessings and symbolising that everyone’s wishes would be fulfilled in the New Year.
On 28th January 2025, the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland hosted a Chinese New Year’s Eve celebration to mark the arrival of the Year of the Snake. Over 4,000 attendees gathered at the Temple to participate in the Blessing Ceremony and Countdown Celebration, celebrating the new year with prayers and blessings.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon conveyed his New Year’s greetings through List MP Nancy LU, who attended the celebration on his behalf. In his message, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Fo Guang Shan for their service to the community, which fosters a sense of warmth and belonging. Having participated in the Temple’s Lunar New Year celebrations for four consecutive years, he reflected on the significance of the occasion as a time of reunion and renewal, as
well as the role of the Temple in the community.
The celebration was attended by several distinguished guests, including Director General Kendra CHEN of the Taipei Economic and Cultural ffice in Auckland, Chairman Damian Light of the Howick Local Board, New Zealand Police Senior Sergeant Anson LIN, Editor Farida Master, as well as police officers and community representatives. They extended their best wishes for the New Year to all New Zealanders.
The Abbess presented New Year blessings from the Venerable Master: Keep Going, the Future is Bright Citing a Buddhist proverb, A thousandyear-old dark room is illuminated by a single lamp, the Abbess encouraged self-awareness, inner illumination and positive thoughts. She emphasised that following the Noble Eightfold Path
allows individuals to brighten and uplift themselves and others.
Director General Kendra CHEN commended the Temple’s contributions to culture, charity and education, which brought happiness to the community. Chairman Damian Light greeted the audience in English, Māori and Mandarin, expressing gratitude to the Temple for fostering harmony with local police, schools and artists. He also conveyed his deep connection with the Temple and appreciation for the opportunity to celebrate and serve alongside the community.
The Counties Manukau East Police came to support and ensure the safety of the celebration. Additionally, they also participated in the FGS Lion Dance performance. SS Anson LIN, who also serves as a Director of the BLIA North Island NZ Chapter,
delivered a speech extending New Year’s blessings and appreciating the Temple’s efforts to promote community harmony.
n New Year s Eve, the Temple hosted a variety of festive activities, including offering auspicious incense, ringing the wishing bell, New Year dance performances, vegetarian food stalls, and a countdown celebration. The festivities continued on 29 th January, the first day of the Lunar New Year, with events such as the Light ffering Ceremony, a lion dance performance by BLIA youths, the distribution of auspicious red packets, calligraphy transcripts of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s writing and a vegetarian fair.
Over the two-day celebration, 10,000 red packets were distributed. This annual New Year’s blessing has become a cherished tradition for the local New Zealand community, adding meaning and joy to the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Jiangsu Province Buddhist Association from China Visited FGS Auckland
On 16 th March 2024, a delegation from the Jiangsu Province Buddhist Association, including the Abbot of Nanjing’s ixia Temple, Venerable Long iang the Abbot of uzhou’s inghua Chan Temple, Venerable GuoGuang the Abbess of Rugao’s Fahua Temple, Venerable ZhaoKong; and the Academic Affairs Head of Jiangsu Buddhist College, Venerable ZongZe, visited Fo Guang Shan Auckland. They were warmly received by Venerable Manshin, the Abbess of Fo Guang Shan in New Zealand. The Abbess led the visitors to pay homage at the Main Shrine and to pay tribute to the Founding Master of the FGS Buddhist Order, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, with a flower offering.
Abbess Manshin guided the guests through the facilities, explaining the community projects carried out in local society, based on the teachings of the
Venerable Master. Abbot Long iang expressed gratitude to the Venerable Master for sharing kindness worldwide and benefiting global citizens. He noted the significance of Buddhism serving the public and commended the BLIA members for their united and strong mission of bringing a joyful and positive attitude to the community. The Abbot encouraged the members, acknowledging their fortune in continuing the spirit of the Venerable Master’s teachings, practicing the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings in New Zealand. He appreciated the Fo Guang Shan team for their efforts, emphasising the need for increased cooperation and unity. Gifts were exchanged, including calligraphy, Pu’er tea and incense burners. FGS Auckland presented a book 366 Days with Wisdom written by the Founding Master in return.
BLIA South Island Attended The 75th China National Day Banquet
Hosted by the Consulate General of PRC in Christchurch
On 27th September 2024, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China PRC in Christchurch hosted the 5th National Day Banquet at The Great Hall Christchurch. About 300 guests from various sectors attended, including Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger, MP Hamish Campbell, MP Vanessa Weenink, MP Megan Woods, Reuben Davidson and other distinguished guests.
Representatives of Buddha s Light International Association (BLIA) South Island, President Bernie SIEW and Subchapter Senior Advisor Sally LIM, were present to congratulate the host. President Bernie presented a scroll featuring Venerable Master Hsing Yun s calligraphy to the Consulate on behalf of FGS Temple.
The atmosphere at the event was lively. A short video showcasing China’s rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty was played, followed by a photo exhibition and cultural experience activities, allowing guests to experience the unique charm of Chinese culture.

BLIA Members Visited Consulate General of the PRC in Christchurch
Consul General Expressed Hope for Art Exchange
On 15th October 2024, at the invitation of Consul General HE Ying, BLIA South Island members visited the Consulate General of the PRC in Christchurch. BLIA South Island delegation included Subchapter Senior Advisor CA ian, Subchapter President Tiffany SU and members ZHANG iang and Apple MA.
During the visit, the BLIA members conveyed best wishes from FGS NZ Abbess Manshin and presented a special edition of Boundless Aesthetics , a publication from the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Headquarters. Consul General HE Ying expressed her appreciation and shared details about the Experience China: Dunhuang Culture in New Zealand exhibition, which had received significant acclaim in Wellington and Auckland earlier this year. Consul General HE proposed that the Dunhuang artworks be displayed at the FGY Art Gallery Christchurch to allow more people to experience the richness of Dunhuang art.
Recognizing the importance of the Dunhuang exhibition, Abbess Manshin and Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Juexi, accompanied by BLIA South Island Subchapter Senior Advisor CA
ian and Vicky HAN from Auckland, revisited the Consulate on 23rd ctober 2024. The Consul General personally guided them through the collection, which featured 17 pieces, including replicas of murals, sculptures and Buddha statues crafted to their original dimensions.
Consul General HE shared her experience visiting the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, describing the awe and inspiration it brought. She emphasised the significance of the exhibition and highlighted FGY Art Gallery Christchurch, as both a Buddhist temple and an artistic hub, as an ideal venue for showcasing Dunhuang art. She expressed hope for future collaborations to promote cultural exchanges.
Abbess Manshin welcomed the proposal, emphasizing FGS’s commitment to promoting art as a means of heart purification. She expressed optimism about the collaboration, particularly as it involves the deeply cultural and spiritual Dunhuang art, calling it a once in a lifetime opportunity to share such treasures with the public.
Consul General of China in Chch Praised FGS Chch as an Art Sanctuary
On 25th ctober 2024, the Consul General of the Chinese Consulate in Christchurch, HE Ying, along with four consuls, visited Fo Guang Shan Christchurch to exchange ideas. They were warmly received by Venerable Juexi, the Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch, along with Subchapter Senior Advisor CA ian and other BLIA members.
Venerable Juexi guided the guests on a Temple tour and introduced the architectural design concepts of the Temple. The visitors experienced the tranquil atmosphere of the art gallery and admired the refreshing landscapes of New Zealand depicted in the artworks by artist Hua-Wei
LAI. Following that, the Venerable introduced several venerables of FGS, including FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, who recently presented a paper at The Sixth World Buddhist Forum held in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China through posters displayed in the Buddha Hall. Consul General HE Ying praised FGS Christchurch for being not only a Buddhist Temple but also a sanctuary for culture and art.
Venerable Juexi shared that the FGS Christchurch has a unique and rich artistic atmosphere. Over the years, during the Open Christchurch event organized by New Zealand’s Te Putehi Centre for Architecture and City Making , FGS Christchurch has
been selected for three consecutive years as one of the most worth visiting buildings among over forty architectural sites in Christchurch.
Consul General HE Ying and her team thanked Venerable Juexi for the warm reception and in-depth explanations. She was full of praises for the Temple performing an important and ongoing role in community services.
Consul General HE Ying also expressed that she would recommend outstanding artworks for display in the FGY Art Gallery, and look forward to future opportunities to jointly promote cultural and artistic activities with the Temple.

On 6 th December 2024, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Christchurch Madame HE Ying, along with Consul WANG Jinjun, Director WANG Jianwen of the Auckland Chinese Cultural Centre, representatives from the Bank of China, Karen Peng and Darren Guo, visited the FGS Buddhist Temple Auckland. They were warmly greeted by Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, President Evelyn KU of BLIA North Island Chapter and Minister in Charge Venerable Rulian of FGS Auckland. The guests were guided to the Main Shrine to offer flowers, followed by a tour of the Venerable Master Hsing Yun ne-Stroke Calligraphy Exhibition and a preview of the upcoming second session of the 2024 Summer Art Salon, set to open on 14th December.
Abbess explained the various activities and services offered by the
Temple’s facilities. She emphasised the Temple’s garden, cultivated years ago through the dedicated efforts of monastics who transported water bucket by bucket to nurture the trees. Over time, these collective efforts have transformed the Temple grounds into a serene place that embodies an environmental ethos. In addition, the Art Salon has been held annually for the past eight years, with local artists showcasing their finest works at the Temple. This year, over 200 artists participated, showcasing impressive pieces that delighted the public. Following Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s core philosophy of the Three Acts of Goodness and the Four Givings , FGS Auckland has become a significant cultural and artistic hub in the community, offering a tranquil space for spiritual purification.
Consul General Madame HE remarked that every corner of the
Temple is filled with surprises and stories. She praised the Temple’s thoughtful cultivation and commitment to the environment. She also expressed gratitude to the Abbess for leading the Auckland and Christchurch teams to successfully organise the Soaring Through the Sky: Dunhuang Art Exhibition in Christchurch this past November. This exhibition beautifully showcased the splendour of Dunhuang culture, offering audiences a magnificent glimpse into China’s rich history. Madame HE looks forward to the Dunhuang Art Exhibition being held at the Auckland Temple next year, giving the Auckland public an opportunity to appreciate the profound heritage of Chinese cave art and Buddhist aesthetics, further deepening cultural exchanges between China and New Zealand.

Gansu Chairman YU Chenghui Praised FGS Christchurch for Embodying Greatness in Refinement and Elegance
On 11th December 2024, FGS Christchurch welcomed a delegation of 16 distinguished guests, including Mr Y Chenghui, Chairman of the Standing Committee of Gansu Provincial People s Congress and Mr ZHANG iaogang, Deputy Head of the Dunhuang Academy. During their visit to the temple, they were accompanied by Consul General Madame HE Ying and her team from the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Christchurch.
The guests were warmly received by FGS NZ Abbess Venerable Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Juexi, Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, Administrative Director of Fo Guang Yuan (FGY) Art Gallery Auckland Vicky HAN and BLIA South Island Deputy Presidents James LOW and ZHANG Dong, as well as BLIA South Island Subchapter Senior

Abbess Manshin led the guests on a Temple tour, explaining its architectural design concepts and sharing the efforts involved in preparing the Soaring through the Sky—Dunhuang Art Exhibition at the FGY Art Gallery Christchurch. Abbess also introduced to the visitors the Illustrated Encyclopedia of World Buddhist Art published by the FGY Art Gallery Headquarters. Abbess emphasized that the Temple makes use of its architectural design and artistic culture to provide a tranquil space for the public. The Dunhuang artworks displayed in the Christchurch Temple which were inspired by the Longmen Grottoes, are a perfect match, showcasing the beauty and significance of Buddhist art.
Mr Y praised the Christchurch Temple for embodying the idea of seeing greatness in smallness. He highlighted its beautiful and meaningful design, which is thoughtful, human-oriented, and blends simplicity, elegance, and modernity while preserving cultural heritage. The temple creates a serene and welcoming environment that meets contemporary needs.
Abbess Manshin explained that the Temple’s architecture reflects the mindset of practitioners, embodying the philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism, as advocated by the FGS Founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Though modest in size, the temple carries deep meaning and embodies the spirit of Giving by focusing on people and serving the community, aligning with Mr Y s concept of seeing greatness in smallness.

On 1st July 2024, National Party List Member of Parliament from the New Zealand Prime Minister s Office, Ms Nancy LU and Member of Parliament for Ilam in Christchurch, Dr Hamish Campbell, visited Fo Guang Shan Christchurch. They were warmly welcomed by FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Juexi, President of BLIA South Island Bernie SIEW, Deputy President James LOW, ZHANG Dong, Subchapter Senior Advisor CA ian and other BLIA members.
During the Temple tour, Abbess Manshin introduced the Temple’s construction design concept and led a blessing light offering. The guests were impressed to learn that the Temple was a gift from the Founder of FGS Buddhist Order Venerable Master Hsing Yun to the local community.
Nancy LU congratulated Abbess Manshin on being awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit – MNZM on the King s Birthday this year. Nancy thanked the Abbess for leading the team in continuously serving the community, creating a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere at the FGS
Temples. This allowed people to recharge and actively give back to society. Dr Hamish Campbell shared that this was his first official visit to the FGS Christchurch but he had visited three times before and each time he experienced the warmth of the volunteers and the joyful atmosphere of the temple.
Abbess Manshin presented the distinguished guests with the BLIA NZ Activity Report. They expressed their interest to participate in Temple activities regularly. BLIA members in both the North and South Island of New Zealand remain committed to serving the community through Education, Culture, Charity and Spiritual Cultivation, striving for social harmony for all.
On 2nd May 2024, Fo Guang Shan Christchurch welcomed a special group of visitors from St Peter’s Church for an interfaith exchange. Led by John Walsh, people from the Church visited the Temple and they were warmly received by the Temple Team.
Most of the visitors were first-time guests to the Temple and they were led on a tour of the Temple. The visitors joyfully rang the Bell of Happiness in the Temple courtyard and admired artworks by local artists in the FGY Art Gallery. They respectfully viewed the solemn Buddha statue, experienced the joy of calligraphy and immersed themselves in the inner peace and tranquillity of the environment.
Members of FGS English Dharma Service, Ola Lyckholm and Deirdre Johns, shared with the visitors their joyful experiences of learning and serving in the Temple. After witnessing the bustling activities, the visitors were amazed by the vibrant vibes of Humanistic Buddhism. They wanted to find out more about the group meditation sessions, the community activities, and the ideas behind the
Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings.
To express warm hospitality, bookmarks and pencils were distributed by the Temple as souvenirs to the visitors. Besides experiencing the warmth and joy of Buddhism, the visitors were deeply impressed by FGS’s spirit of Spreading Joy to Others The group enjoyed delicious vegetarian meals at the Water Drop Cafe and looked forward to future visits.

The Counties Manukau East NCO Training Day took place on 24th July at Fo Guang Shan Auckland, attended by Inspector Rodney Honan, Senior Sergeant Anson LIN and nearly 30 police officers. Abbess Manshin of FGS New Zealand was invited to offer blessings for the conference, sharing the wisdom and compassionate philosophy of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of FGS, to grow in wisdom and understanding.
Inspector Honan expressed his gratitude to the Temple for providing a serene and supportive venue for the training. He appreciated the Abbess and Temple team s thoughtful arrangements, which offered officers a tranquil space to calm their minds and enhance focus, ensuring the training s success. Community
Chorework in Buddhism refers to collaborative labour in Buddhist monasteries, where everyone contributes to tasks such as carrying water, cleaning, gardening or other physical work.
Venerable Master Hsing Yun once said, Chorework is a form of Buddhist practice and a meaningful cultivation. It teaches the sanctity of work, the greatness of service and allows participants to discover their value. By engaging in chorework, devotees not only support the Temple but also form positive connections, cultivate wisdom and grow through learning and experience, making it one of the best ways to enhance blessings and wisdom.”
Under the guidance of FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, the monastics, BLIA members and youths devote
themselves to work despite harsh weather. They uphold collective effort by tending to Temple gardens, cleaning spaces and maintaining the environment. This practice beautifies the Temple, cultivates the mind, eliminates afflictions and accumulates blessings through service.
On 3rd May and 2nd July 2024, police officers from Counties Manukau East Police Station joined the chorework at the Auckland Temple. They assisted in tasks such as clearing leaves and trimming trees in the parking area. The officers expressed gratitude for the Temple’s long standing collaboration with the police in fostering a harmonious community. They were pleased to contribute to maintaining the Temple’s serene and tidy environment, hoping their efforts would give back to the community in a meaningful way.

BLIA South Island Participation in Restoring Forests and Protecting Dry Bush Ecology
Adhering to the concept of Environmental and Spiritual Preservation, the BLIA South Island collaborated with the Christchurch City Council to hold the first T-EARTH Forest Community Project tree-planting event of the year on 2nd March 2024. The Presidents of Subchapter 1 Tiffany SU and Subchapter 2 Donald HE led more than ten members to Dry Bush, located on the outskirts of Christchurch, and joined with almost 30 locals who participated together to contribute to ecological restoration.

BLIA North Island Chapter’s T-Earth Initiative for Earth Day
In response to Earth Day, the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) North Island Chapter held the T-Earth: Environmental Protection and Spiritual Prevention event on 21st April 2024.
Over 60 BLIA members and youths participated under the guidance of the Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian.
Venerable Rulian encouraged everyone to take action to care for the Earth, not just for themselves but also for future generations. Mental mindfulness is equally important, purifying thoughts, ideas, language and intentions promotes social harmony and benefits all.
The group then split into five teams to work in different areas, cleaning gutters, clearing fallen leaves, trimming
hedges, cleaning the parking lot and pruning vines. Volunteers in the kitchen prepared a tasty vegetarian lunch to refuel everyone.
President Evelyn KU of BLIA North Island Chapter noted that beautifying the Temple grounds helps create a dignified environment while reminding people to purify their body, speech and mind, and bring joy to others. She emphasised that caring for the Earth is everyone’s responsibility. Through tree planting, vegetarian promotion, reducing energy consumption and plastic use, and proper waste sorting, BLIA members aim to slow down global warming and create a sustainable world.
President of Subchapter 3 Anita Chu, praised everyone’s commitment to
protecting the planet through small actions. President Steven of BLIA Auckland YAD, emphasised that T-Earth isn’t a one-day event but an ongoing initiative. He mentioned taking care of the Earth starts with caring for one’s environment and contributing even through small acts. YAD member Alan Han appreciated the importance of teamwork, noting the group’s harmonious collaboration and the positive feedback that energised him and gave him a sense of achievement. He expressed gratitude to the Temple for providing opportunities to cultivate merit.

NZ Basketball Teams Receive Temple Blessings Ahead of 2024 Fo Guang Cup in Taiwan
The 2024 Fo Guang Cup University Basketball Tournament commenced on th July. CE of Basketball New Zealand Dillon Boucher MNZM and national team coach Mitchell Langton led the men’s and women’s teams to the Fo Guang Shan Auckland Temple to receive blessings before their departure for Taiwan.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ led a light offering ceremony in the Main Shrine, recited Prayer for Athletes written by the Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, blessing the teams for success in their journey. There were 50 guests attending the blessing ceremony, including Editor Farida Master of Small Business Heroes Magazine, BLIA
North Island Chapter Advisor Sally W NG, Chief Senior Advisor Jennifer LIANG and the team members.
CE Boucher presented a signed basketball and a number 48 jersey as a token of gratitude to the Temple. He expressed that the players represent not only themselves but also their clubs and country, hoping they achieve great results and return to share their success with the community at FGS New Zealand.
Abbess Manshin encouraged the players to have unwavering confidence, noting the special significance of the numbers 4 and 8, as April 8th marks the Buddha’s
Birthday, symbolising equality and compassion. She gave each player a blessing apple, encouraged them to give their all, appreciate their opponents and strive to surpass themselves. The Temple also arranged for the team to enjoy a delicious vegetarian meal.
Player Lauren Tewhata, representing the team, thanked FGS New Zealand for making their participation in the tournament possible. The men’s and women’s teams performed the Kapa Haka war dance and the Te Aroha song to express their gratitude. The Auckland youth members also performed the Open Your Heart and 3G4G Song to cheer on the athletes.
The team comprises players selected from 17 top clubs across New Zealand. Coach Matt Lacey led 2 male players, and Coach Ryan Dubbeldam led 0 female players, departing on 20 th July. This marks New Zealand’s third participation in the tournament, with the men’s and women’s teams each winning bronze medals last year. pon returning, the athletes visited Auckland and Christchurch Temple, expressing gratitude for the friendships fostered through the Fo Guang Cup.
Kaohsiung Nibun Chorus Sing in Gratitude to Venerable Master & Spread Positive Energy
The 13th World Choir Games 2024 were held grandly in Auckland, New Zealand, from the 10 th to 20 th July. Over 200 choirs with more than 10,000 participants from around the globe attended, including nine choirs from Taiwan, comprising about 400 people. The Nibun Chorus from Liugui, Kaohsiung, stood out, winning two gold medals in Folk and Indigenous Music with Accompaniment and Contemporary Mixed Voice Music. Their heavenly singing amazed the judges.
On 18th July, over 80 members of the Nibun Chorus visited the Fo Guang Shan Auckland Temple at the invitation of Advisor Meggan LAM of BLIA North Island. They were warmly received by the Minister in Charge
of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, Chief Senior Advisor Jennifer Liang, Advisor Meggan Lam and the Team.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ expressed her concern for the choir through a video call, informing the Auckland team to prepare a delicious meal to uplift the group. Abbess hoped the meal would rejuvenate them, fill them with confidence and joy for the next day’s competition, and encourage the choir to offer their best performance on stage.
The students thanked the Temple for the delightful dinner, describing it as tasting like home-cooked food. Before departing, they performed a beautiful choral piece as a gesture of gratitude. Venerable Rulian gave the students
gifts and encouraged them to practise the principles of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings and live by the Five Harmonies for a happy and fulfilling life.
On 21st July, the choir returned to the Auckland Temple at the invitation of Abbess Manshin. They performed a Bunun song to honour and thank Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of Fo Guang Shan. The FGS Director of the Executive Council, Venerable Hui Chuan, who was in Europe chairing the International Buddha’s Light Young Adult Executive Conference, specially recorded a video to congratulate the choir on their achievements.
Many members of the choir were survivors of the 2009 Typhoon Morakot. At that time, Venerable Master appointed Venerable Hui Chuan to serve as the Chief Director for Flood Disaster Relief. He expressed his joy at seeing the students grow up healthy and win international gold medals.
“Only with a pure mind can one produce pure sounds, just as because of the Venerable Master’s compassionate heart, Fo Guang Shan Temples around the world exist,” said Abbess Manshin. The Abbess led the group in reporting to the Founding Master, Compassionate Grand Master, today we have nearly 100 students from Liugui, Kaohsiung, who, after 16 years under the care and love of their teachers and the community, have grown up and taken
on responsibilities. They will now sing a song, The Benevolent of Mother’s Eyes , to thank you for your life-saving kindness. The choir’s heavenly voices resonated throughout the space, filling it with pure and graceful melodies.
Conductor Chen shared that the song, like a mother’s loving gaze, brings strength and courage to people’s hearts, reflecting the compassion and warmth of the Venerable Master. He attributed their two gold medals to the Grand Master’s blessings and expressed gratitude for the Abbess’s support and hospitality before and after the competition. He expressed his deep gratitude to Fo Guang Shan Auckland for supporting and showing kindness to the team, which had been one of the blessings and highlights of the trip.

Christ's College Visits FGS CHCH for Interfaith Learning
On 19 th and 21st June, 27th and 29 th November 2024, nearly 150 students and teachers from Christ s College visited FGS Christchurch. Led by the school s chaplain, Rev Cameron Pickering and their teachers, the group engaged in interfaith learning focused on the value of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings
A special screening of the Bodhi Light Tales video story which was produced by Venerable Miao Guang and her team, included The Two-headed Bird, The Scorpion and the Turtle, Flower or Fish and Nothing to Give These videos accompanied by warm narration immersed the students in the stories, reminding them that all beings are interconnected and inspiring them to treat each other kindly.
Student Harry remarked that the serene environment of the Temple made him feel peaceful and that the film imparted wisdom that warmed his heart. The students and teachers expressed their gratitude for the Temple team’s warm hospitality. Before leaving, the students received 3G4G pencils, bookmarks and copies of Venerable Master Hsing Yun s Wise Words as blessings.
Founded by the Anglican Church, Christ s College is the oldest private boys school in New Zealand. Chaplain Rev Cameron Pickering, who has arranged multiple visits to the Temple, expressed great appreciation for the thoughtfulness of the Temple s arrangement. He noted that the students learn the 3G4G values through engaging activities, encouraging them to contribute to society and enrich their lives.
Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland attracts visitors from all walks of life. Through the guides’ engaging explanations, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the garden landscapes, ancient architecture, and the diverse functions of the shrines. Additionally, visitors are immersed in and inspired by the diverse art exhibitions in the Temple’s Art Gallery. This immersive experience allows them to appreciate the Temple s rich cultural and tranquil atmosphere.
The Temple ensures that all visitors feel warmth and peace when visiting. Following the guidance of the Founding Master, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Temple aims to serve as a sanctuary for the enrichment of life. With facilities such as Dharma functions, cultural and educational spaces, art galleries, and the Water Drop Teahouse, the Temple is a hub for sharing kind values and nurturing the community. It serves as a sacred space for the purification of the mind and enrichment of daily life, creating a sense of shared belonging for all.

2025 New Year Pilgrimage A Path Forward to
New Hope
On 1st January 2025, the chant of Namo Sakyamuni Buddha echoed through Fo Guang Shan Auckland Temple as the New Year’s sun rose. Two hundred participants joined the New Year’s Pilgrimage, praying in three-step, one-bow processions towards the Main Shrine. The blessings were dedicated to world peace, societal harmony, family wellbeing and personal aspirations.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ led the assembly in reading the Pilgrimage Prayer by the Founding Master of FGS Monastery, Venerable Master Hsing Yun and shared on the Grand
Master Spring Couplet for the Year of the Snake: Keep Going, The Future is Bright. Abbess further explained: A dark room for a thousand years is illuminated by a single lamp; a thought of goodwill ignites the heart. The Abbess reminded attendees to be mindful of their thoughts and actions to cultivate self-awareness and shine a light unto themselves, fostering happiness, harmony, peace and hope. She emphasised practising the Noble Eightfold Path, particularly the Right View, to enhance understanding and guide everyone towards a brighter future path.
To extend the Founding Master’s compassion, the Temple provided buns and Laba congee for the attendees to recharge their bodies and minds. After breakfast, the participants watched a video by the Most Venerable Hsin Bau, the Head Abbot of FGS Buddhist rder. The attendees then participated in sutra transcription as a meditative practice. Venerable Rulian reminded participants that sutra transcription is a form of cultivation that allows mindfulness, focus and the realisation of wisdom in everyday life.

Right Path By Venerable Master
Fo Guang Shan Auckland and Christchurch invited Venerable Huihao, Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Seoul, to hold two Dharma talks with the theme of My Master - Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The talks attracted more than 250 BLIA members from all over ceania to listen online and in person.
Venerable Huihao aspired to live a monastic life from an early age. He fondly recalled entering the Fo Guang Shan Sramanera College at the age of 4, where he was deeply inspired by the teachings of Venerable Master Hsing Yun. and care, which left a lasting impression on Venerable Huihao and greatly inspired him. After completing his military service, Venerable Huihao encountered challenges in his translation work. The Venerable Master offered guidance, emphasising the importance of building meaningful connections with people to resolve his doubts, inspiring him to serve others with purpose and to transcend his limitations.
President Bernie SIEW of the BLIA South Island shared his deep appreciation for the Venerable Master’s resilience in enduring post-operative pain and challenges. Despite his own hardships, the Master chose to bear the burden himself rather than letting his disciples face any difficulties. The Sangha s selfless dedication remains truly inspiring and worthy of admiration.
With the core principle of greatness does not require great wisdom, but great aspiration, Venerable Master Hsing Yun led his disciples by example, practising mindfulness in both action and stillness. Through initiatives such as creating onestroke calligraphy and establishing the Good Seedlings Education Fund, he emphasised the significance of motivation, aspiration, and connection Despite his illness, the Venerable Master continued to inspire strength in the Sangha and society. The Master’s Complete Works and One-Stroke Calligraphy are seen as eternal Dharmakaya relics , reminding people to live with compassion and fearlessness while practising Buddhism through meaningful actions.
After 25 years of cultivation, Venerable Huihao became the first non-Chinese Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Seoul, marking a milestone in the localisation of Sangha education. He stated that age is just a state of mind, and true transcendence lies in aspiring to serve and foster connections.
Adviser Jennifer LIANG of BLIA North Island shared that Abbot Huihao’s sharing made the public deeply feel the Venerable Master’s compassion and wisdom in life, and inspired BLIA members to pass on the light of Buddhism as upright practitioners. Advisor Peggy TSAN of Subchapter 3 emphasised that BLIA members share a deep connection with the Venerable Master and should nurture and protect the bodhi seeds to ensure their growth. Member Yanling LEE noted that the Master was meticulous and thoughtful during his lifetime. As BLIA members, we should learn from the Master’s spirit of advance planning and practical action, integrating Buddhism into daily life.
Venerable Juexi, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Temple, mentioned that the Master faced life with fearlessness and calmness, explained everything meticulously, and allowed his disciples to learn to take responsibility.
The BLIA NZ members expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Abbot Huihao for his Dharma inspiration and vowed to uphold the Founding Master’s wishes and teachings in the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism.
Abbess Manshin thanked Venerable Huihao for his wonderful talk and pointed out that only those with great courage and wisdom can make immediate adjustments, undergo self-revolution and collaborate with the team. The Abbess encouraged BLIA members to protect Fo Guang Shan across lifetimes and act as the Master s embodiment, to bring glory to Buddhism.

Venerable Yongdong Reveals The Subtle Effects of Illusions
Venerable Yongdong, a professor at the Institute of Religious Studies at Fo Guang niversity, held a Dharma talk entitled Subtle Effects of Illusions of Dharma at Fo Guang Shan Auckland on 24th July 2024, attracting nearly a hundred BLIA members and BLIA YAD to participate.
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ thanked Venerable Yongdong for coming to give a Dharma talk and enlightening the public on the core principles of illusion. She also presented Most Venerable Hsin Bau’s book Morning Wise Quotes to encourage all to achieve the Bodhi mind in the Bodhisattvas Bodhimanda. If the positive retribution is in order, the retribution presented will be correct and complete. wing to the Founding Master s blessing, the seeds of Humanistic Buddhism can be spread throughout New Zealand.
Illusions are appearances without real substance, like a magician’s tricks. True existence is described as 'illusory being,' and freedom from illusions is the perfect practice of Bodhisattvas. Venerable Yongdong explained this concept, drawing from the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra and other Buddhist scriptures. The venerable highlighted that human life is rare and precious, arising from various conditions. Additionally, she encouraged everyone to cherish positive conditions and, through understanding all phenomena, to perceive the true nature of life.
Venerable Yongdong shared the A between Manjushri Bodhisattva and Vimalak rti Layman in the Vimalakīrti Sutra , highlighting that the Bodhisattva
sees sentient beings as an illusion. The suffering is also illusory thus, sentient beings can be liberated through giving causes and conditions under the Dharma’s guise. Similarly, Bodhisattvas guide sentient beings, inspiring bodhicitta towards the Pure Land and encouraging the Bodhi mind.
uoting the Parable of the Phantom City Chapter from the Lotus Sutra, Venerable Yongdong proposed that Fo Guang Shan is the Temple of Bodhisattvas. She highlighted that Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Founder of Fo Guang Shan, continues to illuminate and serve not only the monastics and disciples around the world but also all sentient beings. The Venerable offered her blessings to everyone: Keep the right thoughts in your heart, understand the profound applications of illusions, follow the footsteps of the Founding Master, and serve as Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva’s practitioner in the world. If the Venerable Master were here and saw the Temple being so clean and dignified, he would surely be delighted.
BLIA South Island held its 2024 Annual General Meeting on 0 th August. The meeting was presided over by President Bernie SIEW, more than 5 people in attendance, including Deputy President ZHANG Dong, Subchapter Senior Advisors CA ian and Louisa K , FGS NZ Abbess Manshin and the Minister in charge of FGS Christchurch, Venerable Juexi.
As President, Bernie completed his two terms of service and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the guidance from the Temple, as well as the cooperation of the BLIA members. He emphasised that by organising various activities, the joyful seed has been sown throughout New Zealand. He also pledged to continue supporting the new board of committees, sharing his experience and working alongside them as a team.
BLIA Subchapter President Tiffany S , Subchapter 2 President HE Fei, Subchapter 3 Deputy President Kong Hooi SAW and YAD Vice President Elaine H ANG presented reports. They highlighted their sub chapters activities. A recap video showcased key events from the past year, including Buddha’s Birthday Celebrations, the T-EARTH Project and the Chocolatte Food Festival, demonstrating collective achievements this year.
At the meeting, President Bernie announced the 3 newly elected members for the 4th term of the Board of Directors of BLIA South Island. They then voted on the new President and Vice Presidents. After the voting, James L W was elected as the President, with CA ian and ZHANG Dong as Deputy Presidents. The BLIA Young Adult Division
presented a lively dance performance from the Sounds of the Human World album.
FGS NZ Abbess Manshin emphasised that BLIA South Island activities foster community connection and positivity. BLIA members should engage with the Temple’s initiatives and support the Young Adult Division in nurturing future Buddhist leaders.
BLIA North Island Chapter held the 2024 Annual General Meeting on 2 th ctober 2024. Nearly 00 people attended including Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian, Senior Advisor Lintao Y of BLIA North Island Chapter, President Evelyn K , BLIA committees, members and Young Adult Division.
President Evelyn K expressed gratitude to Founding Master Hsing Yun for introducing Humanistic Buddhism to New Zealand. She congratulated Abbess Manshin on receiving the Member of the New Zealand rder of Merit MNZM for
her dedication to social welfare and community services in culture, art, education and charity.
New directors, presidents of subchapters, and various positions for 2025-202 were elected in this meeting, with President Evelyn Y being re-elected for a new term as the President, which received widespread support. A number of proposals were discussed at the meeting, including participation in the 2025 Fo Guang Shan Chan and Pure Land Virtual Light-offering Dharma Service, the 2025 BLIA General Conference, the th Art Salon, New Year Celebration Activities, Buddha’s Birthday Festival
and more. In addition, the Abbess presented awards to those who achieved full marks in the ceania Buddhism Examination.
Abbess Manshin thanked the team for their tremendous efforts over the past years and encouraged everyone to continue to practice the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings , aspire to serve others, and accelerate development in culture, education and the arts, thereby adding positive values to society. The meeting concluded with BLIA YAD performing the dance I Have Faith, creating a warm atmosphere for the meeting.

BLIA South Island Year-End Gathering Passing the Torch to New Leadership
On 21st December 2024, the 4th handover ceremony for the new president of the BLIA South Island was held alongside a year-end gathering to celebrate the Winter Solstice. The event was attended by FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch, Venerable Juexi, BLIA committees and members, BLIA Young Adult Division YAD members and nearly 0 participants.
The event included the handover ceremony for the new president, the presentation of certificates to new board members and a special recognition of the Association s 2 years of service with the New Zealand Red Cross Meals on Wheels programme. The attendees also reflected on recent events and the BLIA YAD also presented an energetic dance performance.
Bernie SIEW, the Former President who served for two presidential terms, expressed his gratitude to BLIA members for their unwavering support, the guidance of Abbess Manshin and Venerable Juexi and the platform provided by the Temple that enabled him to fulfil his duties. Newly Appointed President James L W expressed his appreciation for the Temple and BLIA members support and encouraged everyone to aspire for self-improvement and follow the footsteps of Venerable Master Hsing Yun to make greater contributions to society.
Abbess Manshin shared her journey serving in ceania and her insights from attending the World Buddhist Forum. Abbess encouraged BLIA members to enrich their lives by taking part in BLIA events and supporting the Temple.

2024 BLIA NZ Seminar
On 2nd and 3rd March 2024, the Buddha Light International Association BLIA North Island Chapter held a two-day seminar featuring insightful lectures by FGS NZ Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland Venerable Rulian and Senior Advisor Lintao Y . ver 50 BLIA members attended, engaging in interactive discussions and A sessions. The seminar focused on cultivating the right mindfulness and views.
Lay Dharma Teacher Lintao Y shared the story of BLIA’s Founding Journey by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. He highlighted the Temple’s leadership in promoting kindness through culture and nurturing talents through education. Lintao shared several projects such as the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing, 366 Days with Wisdom Book Gifting Project and the Annual Art Salon. He expressed gratitude for the Temple’s guidance and the members’ dedication to community service.
Venerable Rulian encouraged the attendees to find their purpose through service. Taking on responsibilities helps to discover potential, dignify life and strengthen faith. President Evelyn K appreciated the active participation and ideasharing, noting the seminar’s role in strengthening the team.
Abbess Manshin emphasised the importance of wisdom in daily life. Referring to the Venerable Master’s teachings, where there is Dharma, there is a way, implying that all problems can be resolved with wisdom. The Venerable Master also stated that BLIA members should participate in diverse activities to create affinities. By serving on various platforms, individuals cultivate positive karmic retribution and enhance the quality of life.
n the second day, the Abbess addressed members questions about their service in the Temple.
The Abbess used simple language to share practical experiences, clarifying the relationships between wealth and service, attire and attitude, remorse and gratitude. Lastly, the Abbess blessed the participants. Hoping everyone shines, excels and realises their potential through collective efforts, fostering a life of gratitude.
rganised by the Buddha’s Light International Association BLIA ceania and hosted by the BLIA Melbourne chapter, the 2024 ceania Buddhism Exam took place on 29 th September and th ctober at Fo Guang Shan Auckland and Christchurch, respectively. The event attracted 0 participants, including BLIA members, youths and students from the Children’s Dharma Class. Participants engaged in an in-depth
study of The Secret to Achievements – Diamond Sutra by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, applying its wisdom to their daily lives.
In FGS Christchurch, seven participants achieved full marks and were awarded copies of Echoes from the Agama Sutra , the latest work by the Most Venerable Hsin Bau, as well as the English edition of Buddha-Dharma: Pure & Simple by
the Venerable Master. The awards were presented by Venerable Juexi, Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch.
Following the exam, Abbess Manshin of Fo Guang Shan New Zealand addressed the participants, offering insights into the more challenging questions and drawing connections between the Order of the White Elephant and the Ten Great Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva . The Abbess encouraged everyone to embody the path of the Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism in their daily lives. Venerable Juexi reminded participants to embrace the wisdom of The Diamond Sutra, deepen their understanding of causation, cultivate right views and lead lives filled with happiness and peace.
BLIA South Island Chapter Advisor Louise K emphasised that BLIA members should read the sutras and integrate their teachings into daily life, as Humanistic Buddhism is deeply rooted in serving others. BLIA North Island Member Yanling LEE and youth Alan HAN shared their reflections on the examination, expressing their determination to further their Buddhist studies and awaken their inner wisdom.

Cultivating Compassion Through Repentance
On 29 th June 2024, FGS Buddhist College Auckland successfully concluded its term. The programme included 3 sessions led by the Minister in Charge of FGS Auckland, Venerable Rulian, guiding participants through Emperor Liang Dharma Service. Fifteen students practised walking meditation and Buddhist etiquette. The Venerable offered insights into the Sutra, encouraging self-reflection and the observation of body, speech, and mind to eliminate karmic obstacles through repentance, enhancing personal cultivation and progressing toward the Bodhisattva state.
Student Meggan LAM reflected on how the Venerable’s teachings inspired her vow to diligent practice on the compassionate Bodhisattva path. Anita CH recognised that her words and actions could harm others, fostering compassion through repentance. Eric CHANG valued the Venerable’s guidance, aiming to embody repentance in his thoughts and actions. ZhouRui found that the vivid explanations deepened his understanding of Buddhism, motivating him to abandon wrongdoings and apply the teachings in daily life.

Exploring the Wondrous Dharma FGS Christchurch Buddhist College
The Buddhist College of South Island NZ commenced on 2 th February 2024 and concluded successfully on 29 th May 2024. The 3 month sessions were led by the Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Venerable Juexi, focusing on the study of the Vimalakirti Sutra , with nearly 30 enrolled students.
The Vimalakirti Sutra , also known as The Inconceivable Liberation, is one of the most important sutras in Mahayana Buddhism. Venerable Juexi presented Vimalakirti’s profound dialogues with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in vivid, picturesque ways, delivering them to the class with humor and ease. Venerable Juexi guided the students to a deeper understanding of the wise
dialogues between bodhisattvas and Buddha s disciples. The Sutra inspired confidence in the path of enlightenment, motivating Bodhisattvas to fulfill their vows on their journeys towards attaining Buddhahood. Moreover, Vimalakirti demonstrates his supernatural abilities, encouraging Bodhisattvas to fulfill their vows on their journeys to attain Buddhahood.
BLIA South Island Subchapter Senior Advisor Louisa K thanked Venerable Juexi for her patience and dedication. Each chapter was thoroughly explained by Venerable, for example she emphasised that both Worldly and Transcendental Offerings are essential sources of merit in human life.
Deputy President of BLIA South Island, James L W expressed gratitude for the Venerable’s guidance. He shared that he gained a deeper appreciation of the sutra’s profound wisdom and vowed to dedicate himself even more wholeheartedly to future responsibilities. BLIA South Island Subchapter Elder Advisor CA ian also expressed that through comprehensive study, she has developed deep respect for the Sutra and realised that the ultimate goal of practice is neither personal liberation, the Western Pure Land nor Nirvana, but the continuous practice of doing good in the human realm.

BLIA South Island Members Sharing the Joy of Reading Vimalakirti Sutra
n 3th July 2024, Humanistic Buddhist College of FGS Christchurch held a sharing session on the learning of Vimalakīrti Sutra . ver 40 attendees including President of BLIA South Island Chapter Bernie SIEW, Deputy Presidents James L W and ZHANG Dong, BLIA members and Young Adult Division members joyfully participated in the session.
The students were divided into 5 groups to share their experiences in reading the Vimalakīrti Sutra Some groups provided concise key explanations, some used role-playing to help the audience to understand the profound and wonderful dialogues between Vimalak rti and various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The groups discussed topics such as Dharma Offering, The Dharma Gate of Non-Duality, The Dharma Gate of Endless Liberation, Seeing Akṣobhya Buddha and Accumulated Fragrance In their presentations, the participants also highlighted the teachings of
the Founder of FGS Buddhist rder Venerable Master Hsing Yun and quoted several local projects carried out by BLIA South Island members which allowed the community to incorporate wisdom into their daily lives.
Venerable Juexi appreciated the efforts that had been put into the preparation and presentation, she concluded that Vimalakīrti Sutra is a Mahayana sutra that embodies both humanity and Buddha nature, allowing one to resonate with the hearts of the Bodhisattvas in daily lives. By reading the Sutra, one can observe and reflect the law of causes and conditions in the world and derive endless motivation from it. Venerable encouraged everyone to learn from the Bodhisattva’s compassion, to rethink the meaning of serving the public and to progressively become a true Bodhisattva through practice and self-purification.

Practicing Humanistic Buddhism Through the Platform Sutra’s Teachings
To deepen understanding of the Platform Sutra’s teachings and Humanistic Buddhism, the 2025 Humanistic Buddhist College Christchurch commences a course on th February. The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch course was led by the Minister in Charge of FGS Christchurch Temple Venerable Juexi, with nearly 30 participants.
Venerable Juexi explained that all beings naturally possess a mind equal to that of the Buddha and are inherently pure. Since everyone has Buddha-nature and is equal in this regard, how come not everyone can achieve the Buddha’s great wisdom and perfect enlightenment The answer lies in the fact that although sentient beings have an inherently
pure mind, it is often obscured by afflictions. nly through diligent practice and the cleansing of these afflictions can the true nature, Buddha-nature, and Tathāgatagarbha be revealed. Therefore, personal cultivation and effort are fundamental determinants of whether one can become a Buddha.
The participant Maggie Duncan, who has lived in Christchurch for years despite her busy schedule, felt grateful for the chance to study Buddhist sutra under the guidance of Venerable. Participants expressed their gratitude for the insights, history and lineage of the Platform Sutra shared by the Venerable. They found it especially valuable and were grateful to hear it in the 2 st century.
Benefting Students with Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Life Wisdom
The 2025 Fo Guang English Buddhist Class Christchurch NZ commenced on 2nd March and is led by FGS NZ Abbess Manshin. The lesson was based on Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s book Humanistic Buddhism: Holding True to the Original Intents of Buddha , focusing on the chapter My Understanding about Humanistic Buddhism. A total of 5 students participated in the session.
Abbess highlighted the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism as selfimprovement and self-affirmation, referencing the Agamas: Rely on oneself, rely on the Dharma and do not rely on anything else. ne can experience greater happiness, peace and liberation by taking control of one s own life. Abbess encouraged everyone to refine our intrinsic nature and be our own mentor by maintaining the right understanding and right views in daily life. Abbess further explained that love is the foundation of all things, but only love guided by wisdom can
positively impact life. The formula for compassion is love plus wisdom.
The English Buddhist Class curriculum includes Buddha-Dharma: Pure and Simple Study Group, Dharma service, meditation sessions and more. These activities allow participants to develop a deeper understanding of Humanistic Buddhism. The participants come from various professions, including early childhood teachers, accountants, educators and writers.
The participant Deirdre Johns appreciated the well-structured curriculum and deeply valued Abbess’s dedication to teaching despite her busy schedule. la Lyckholm aspired to delve deeper into Buddhist teachings and apply them daily. Sue Anne shared that Abbess’s insightful explanations and rich life experiences were genuinely enlightening and she eagerly anticipates the upcoming lessons.

Mother's Day and Dragon Boat Festival Celebration to Foster Gratitude
Fo Guang Shan Auckland celebrated Mother s Day and the Dragon Boat Festival on 5th May and th June 2024 respectively. The event was attended by Abbess Manshin, President Evelyn K of the BLIA North Island Chapter and 20 members. Abbess led the participants in chanting sutras and recite a prayer written by the Founder of the FGS Buddhist rder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, wishing everyone a life filled with good health, happiness and abundant wisdom. Yoga instructor Rachel conducted warm-up exercises, while the BLIA youth group performed dances and hosted in fun games, contributing to the joyful festive atmosphere.
Abbess Manshin delivered a Dharma talk based on the Mind Contemplation Sutra , emphasising the profound love of mothers. The Abbess shared that the Founding Master wished to connect with people through festivals by gifting the largest apples as tokens of blessings. She likened the Temple to a mother in the community, nurturing a spiritual mind. President Evelyn also expressed gratitude to parents and the Venerables, describing them as compassionate parental figures who guide BLIA members in cultivating merit and wisdom.
Emperor Liang Repentance Dharma Service FGS Auckland
On 2nd June 2024, the four-day Emperor Liang's Repentance Service at Fo Guang Shan Auckland concluded successfully, drawing over 00 participants total. Devotees gathered in the Main Shrine to respectfully honour the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, engaging in the chanting of the ten volumes of the Emperor Liang's Repentance. Through this practice, they discovered the profound ability of the Dharma to touch hearts and dedicated the merits generated to all sentient beings, spreading the joy of the Dharma to all who encountered it.
Abbess Manshin delivered a Dharma talk on the importance of wisdom and faith in Buddhism. She emphasised that repentance should be as natural as breathing and that
the seeds of Bodhi are steadfast like the earth. The seeds of wisdom and faith can overcome all challenges. She encouraged everyone to value life, sow good causes in the Alaya Consciousness and nourish the practice of Dharma with them.
The Dharma Service also included a longevity plaque dedicated to the New Zealand Police, symbolising the unity of local devotees in their Buddhist practice. Abbess expressed her gratitude to Venerable Manko, Chief Abbess of ceania, and the guiding Venerables from New Zealand for their support. She also praised the devotion and collaborative efforts of all participants in making this auspicious event possible.

Fo Guang Shan Dharma Service Bringing Wisdom to Everyday Life
Dharma Service is a gathering to understand the Buddha’s teaching. The Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun s interpretation of Dharma Service has four meanings: Meeting with the Dharma, teaching with the Dharma, following the Dharma and flourishing with the Dharma. nderstanding the wise teaching enhances life s content and uncovers the joy of life. It enables life to communicate with the Truth and feel the beauty of life. By following the rules of life, wisdom will naturally emanate from the heart.
n the first fifteenth days of each lunar month and every Sundays, FGS Auckland organises Dharma services, as well as major Dharma Functions such as the ing Ming Dharma Function, the Ksitigarbha Dharma Service, the Great Compassion Repentance Service, ffering the Buddha Celestial Beings Dharma Function and more. May the attendees gain wisdom and cultivate a calm mind through these Dharma Functions.
On 18th August 2024, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple New Zealand held its annual Sangha Day Celebration, organised by the Buddha’s Light International Association BLIA New Zealand. The ceremony commenced with the resonant sound of bell and drum. ver 300 participants attended the ceremony, including BLIA members from both the North and South Islands, youth members, students from the Children’s Dharma Class and devotees. Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ led the service, guiding the congregation in chanting the llambana Sutra.
During the ceremony, BLIA members offered exquisite delicacies to the monastics as an act of reverence. In addition, heartfelt gratitude were expressed from various performances for the contributions of the Founding Master, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, who established the Temple in New Zealand and offered services that benefit the country. The atmosphere was filled with applause, culminating in the collective singing of Welcome Home, which heightened the sense of gratitude among all present.
Abbess Manshin shared the wisdom of the Founding Master, explaining the significance of the offering ceremony, highlighting that it not only fulfils the traditional role of supporting the monastic community but also enriches one’s spiritual practice, transforming the so-called Ghost Month of July into a Month of Filial Piety and a Month of Meritorious Deeds through the collective practice of virtue and wisdom.
Participants lined up in the courtyard to offer to the monastics, cultivating merit and wisdom for themselves and their families. This ceremony filled their hearts with strength.

Nurturing Mindfulness
In 202 , Fo Guang Shan NZ launched the English Dharma Service to foster mindfulness and inner peace for individuals from all walks of life. Since then, hundreds of local participants have attended the weekly sessions held every Saturday in Auckland and every Sunday in Christchurch. Participants diligently learn Buddhist
teachings, joyfully chant sutras, and experience inner peace through meditation.
In December 2023, the FGS CHCH Humanistic Buddhism English Study Group was initiated to deepen participants understanding and practice of the Dharma. sing
Venerable Master Hsing Yun s Buddha-Dharma Pure and Simple Book 1, the study group explores the profound teachings of Buddhism. Additionally, the members cordially invited FGS NZ Abbess Manshin to deliver talks on the key principles of Humanistic Buddhism.
Abbess Manshin encouraged participants to strive to uncover their inherent Buddha nature, likening it to refining a diamond within themselves to achieve enlightenment. Attendees expressed gratitude for Abbess s teachings and for the activities organised by the Temple, which provide a peaceful environment and platform for exploring the meaning of life.
Christchurch participants, Deirdre Johns and la Lyckholm, who have attended the Dharma Service since its inception, shared their appreciation for the care and commitment shown by the Temple, which help them to learn the Dharma and discover a greater purpose in life through the Dharma Service sessions.

2024 International Buddha’s Light Youth Conference
Youths from Five Continents nited for the Dharma
The 2024 International Buddha’s Light Youth Executive Conference took place from th - 20 th July at Fo Guang Shan Berlin, Germany, with nearly 300 youth leaders from 45 chapters across five continents and 24 countries attending. The conference included cultural experiences, city exploration, discussions, and project presentations, promoting environmental coexistence and team co-prosperity
The opening ceremony featured a symbolic puzzle representing the cooperation of the five continents, highlighting the unity of Buddha’s Light Youths. Venerable Hui Chuan, Chief Executive of the BLIA YAD Headquarters, encouraged participants to follow Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s philosophy and implement teachings that enhance the happiness and well being of all.
Representing New Zealand, BLIA YAD NZ, Sean Chua and Kyle Gu demonstrated passion and commitment on the international stage. Sean shared insights on the Temple’s environmental initiatives and led discussions on providing services and cultivating communities. Kyle added that the Temple allows youths to transcend cultural boundaries and create value for the society.
The conference included an European Cultural Experience Stall highlighting the localisation and diversity of the Fo Guang spirit. Venerable Miao iang reflected on three decades of service in Europe, promoting cultural exchange and the transmission of faith.

The conference concluded in July at the Titanic Convention Centre in Berlin. During the closing ceremony, Venerable Hui Chuan encouraged the youth to embody the spirit of self-enlightenment, enlighten others, perfect enlightened actions , generate positivity in society, and integrate faith with social engagement.
Future plans involve a comprehensive youth branding campaign and the promotion of the Three Acts of Goodness song, ensuring that the joy of the Dharma reaches the global BLIA YAD community.
This year’s conference enabled global exchanges, enhancing faith transmission and cultural integration. The BLIA YAD Berlin handed over to the BLIA YAD Chunghwa to host the 2025 International Buddha’s Light Youth Conference at Fo Guang Shan Headquarters in Taiwan.

Staying True to the Initial Aspiration
The 2024 BLIA YAD NZ Consensus Seminar was held on th March, 2 th April, th May and 2 th ctober at Fo Guang Shan Auckland Temple, attracting 20 young adults to participate. Various speakers including Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, President of BLIA North Island Evelyn K and Deputy President Larry YANG, led discussions and A sessions to guide participants in building healthy social relationships and developing wisdom to handle conflicts and challenges.
The seminar s activities included Tai Chi exercise, mindfulness meditation, role-play scenarios and interactive discussions to equip participants with the skills to face life s challenges. President Evelyn introduced the connection between the Buddha’s Light International Association BLIA and the Young Adult Division YAD , encouraging participants to actively engage in Temple activities and enhance their personal growth through service. Deputy President Larry spoke on A Buddhist’s Self-Revolution, emphasising the importance of self-
and Embracing the
transformation to positively influence others with the right knowledge and perspectives. Subchapter President Mei Chou urged participants to take precepts as their guide, cultivating wisdom to navigate interpersonal conflicts.
During the A session, Abbess Manshin encouraged attendees to seize the opportunity to ask questions and practice the principles of Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings , unlocking their potential to become people who bring opportunities to others. Abbess also shared an inspirational Buddhist quote: Another day has passed, life diminishes as it does; like fish in a drying pond, where is the joy in this? She urged participants to set goals, cherish the present, dedicate themselves to serving others, and refine their character through responsibilities, becoming wise and courageous individuals.
The Consensus Seminar concluded successfully, leaving participants spiritually nourished and with a clearer
direction for the future. Participant Shuxuan H ANG expressed his gratitude, sharing that through the Abbess’s guidance, he is determined to take on more responsibilities, cultivate humility and engage in selfreflection.
Cultivating Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom 2025 Oceania BLIA Youth White Elephant Leadership Online Training
On 15th February, the 2025 ceania White Elephant nline Training, organised by the BLIA Young Adult Division Auckland, officially commenced. The online opening ceremony welcomed over 0 participants from ceania, the Philippines and North America, with guidance from Chief Abbess Manko of FGS ceania, Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ, Abbess MiaoJing of FGS Philippines, guiding venerable and BLIA members from various regions.
In the opening speech, Chief Abbess Manko encouraged participants to embrace challenges with resilience, emphasising that difficulties are stepping stones to success. She reminded them of the Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s teaching: I am a Buddha , inspiring participants to seize opportunities with gratitude and take responsibility with courage.
The four-week online training programme allows participants to
explore the Threefold Training Precepts, Meditative Concentration and Wisdom through classes and panel discussions. Abbess Manshin conducted A sessions with the participants, answering their questions and encouraging them to practise and apply Buddhist teachings to enhance their quality of life. Abbess reminded the youths to remember that we are one among many, to serve with a joyful heart and to gain nourishment through learning.
The lecturers include BLIA North Island Chapter Advisor Lintao Y , who leads the discussion on precepts, Sub-chapter Advisor Meggan LAM teaches meditative concentration, Deputy President Larry YANG and Vicky HAN explore wisdom. Additionally, Secretary Muyang WANG explained the 3G4G philosophy, explaining its relevance in daily life and its role in personal and community development. Interactive Dharma discussions help participants
explore the foundations and applications of Buddhist teachings, enhancing their faith and practice. Youth representatives from Australia, including Serinna HA from Melbourne and Henry LIA from ueensland, also shared their insights on precepts in daily life. They encouraged participants to embrace precepts as a path to true freedom, emphasizing that mistakes shouldn t be feared, as ethical guidelines support personal growth and self-discipline.
Venerable Miao Zhe, the guiding venerable of the BLIA ceania YAD, expressed gratitude to the NZ YAD for their dedication in organising this training. She noted that the programme encouraged youth to reflect on how to integrate Buddhism into daily life and use Buddhist wisdom when facing challenges.
Leando CHAN from Sydney thanked Abbess Manshin for addressing youth doubts and highlighting the importance of seeking solutions to challenges. ian ER from Perth was excited for each weekly session, appreciating the practical and insightful content. Junior Doctor Michael from Melbourne expressed gratitude for the youth lecturers generous sharing of experiences, which offered invaluable inspiration and learning opportunities.
The training also incorporated The Rhythm of the World, bringing participants together to sing Star & Clouds , along with other songs such as the 3G4G Song , Faith and Open Your Heart, composed by BLIA New York President Jenny CHEN. These performances aimed to inspire participants to embark on their own personal transformation, lead by example and cultivate a harmonious and peaceful society.
Creating the Joy and Harmony within Life BLIA YAD New Zealand & UoA Fo Guang Club
Inspired by the Founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun s philosophy of fostering talent through education, BLIA YAD NZ actively organises various activities to encourage young people to learn about Buddhism. Since the establishment of the niversity of Auckland Fo Guang Club in July 20 4, it has collaborated annually with YAD to host welcoming sessions, blessing ceremonies, one-day meditation retreats and study groups, attracting participants originated from various countries.
The activities include Temple tours, ringing the wishing bell, viewing exhibitions, volunteering and learning about the history of Fo Guang Shan. These experiences give participants a deeper understanding of the Temple s contributions to society and
the principles of the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings
Abbess Manshin of FGS NZ engages with the youth during these events, addressing their questions and encouraging them to utilise their talents and interests through the platform provided by the Temple. She highlights the values of selfaffirmation, respecting others and integrating with the community, inspiring young people to cultivate wisdom and become individuals of high calibre who contribute to society.
These initiatives enhance young people s ability to construct the right attitude and assist them in establishing positive values and beliefs.

Passing on Culture Faith
In 2024, Fo Guang Chinese School and the Children’s Dharma Class in FGS Auckland continue advancing their educational mission. The programmes blend classroom learning with activities, enabling students to engage with Chinese culture, learn Buddhist etiquette and instill kindness and beauty in their minds.
On 4th August, the Chinese School participated in the New Zealand Traditional Chinese Characters Cultural Festival and competed in the national hard-pen calligraphy contest. During the awards ceremony, the school performed Venerable Master's Poetry and The Child Who Lights the Lamp, highlighting the classic Chan poetry of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, Founder of FGS. Ten students reached the finals, with secondary student LI Yanda winning an Excellence Award.
Educational Director Christina LIANG expressed gratitude to the Temple for its unwavering support. She also thanked teacher CHEN Shanhua,

On 8th December, the school held its year-end exhibition and closing ceremony in Prajna Hall. ver 20 people attended the event, including Abbess Manshin, Minister in Charge Venerable Rulian, Deputy Principal Jennifer LIANG, President Evelyn K of BLIA North Island, Advisor Lintao Y , teachers, students and parents.
The Awards recognise students’ efforts by acknowledging progress, diligence, and excellence. The Chinese and Finger Arithmetic classes delivered captivating performances, including poetry recitation and arithmetic demonstrations. Meanwhile, the Children’s Dharma Class delighted the audience with singing and dancing performances, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.
