Fo Guang Shan NZ Abbess Manshin Selected as Top 10 Local Hero of the Year 2023

On 12 th December 2022, Kiwibank, New Zealand's leading local bank, announced the Top 10 Local Heroes 2023 from a list of 100 outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to New Zealand.

Venerable Manshin, the Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple New Zealand, was selected as one of the Top 10, and was the only Asian and the only religious person among the 100 recipients.

The judging panel said that the 100 New Zealand Local Heroes were selected from 17 regions across the country, covering 12 areas of contribution, and with hundreds of nominations this year, it was not easy to select 100 winners. The winners have been working in and serving the communities for many years, which instil the positive value to the society and help to improve the quality of life.

Abbess Manshin, was recognised for her tireless efforts, for more than 30 years, demonstrating outstanding leadership skills, wisdom and compassion to lead the team to contribute to education, social care, arts, cultures and spiritual development in New Zealand.

In line with Venerable Master Hsing Yun's philosophy, Abbess dedicate her life to the service of others. She has set up education programmes to nurture the values embedded in the Three Goodness - Do Good Deeds, Say Good Words and Think Good Thoughts. Over 25,000 students and teachers from 51 schools have participated in this programme since 2014. During the height of the pandemic, Abbess responded immediately by importing 15,000 Rapid Antigen Test kits from BLIA HQ into the country to aid the shortage of

test kits and to reduce the impact of the Omicron variant on the community. She organised the distribution of these kits across 97 schools in Auckland and Christchurch within four days. The New Zealand government was amazed and impressed by the selflessness, agility, solidarity and efficiency of the BLIA members, and Abbess Manshin deserved to be elected as a local hero in New Zealand.

BLIA NZ Round Table Conference Localisation through Culture & Education

On the 7th October, BLIA Oceania was tasked with organising a Round Table Conference. BLIA North Island hosted the conference with the theme of Localisation via Culture and Education. A practical example of the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing, which has been organised in Auckland and Christchurch over the past 8 years, was presented in the conference. BLIA South Island held on to the theme of Localisation of FGS NZ, while incorporating Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s four forms of localisation: 1. Language 2. Social custom 3. Habit and 4. Education, to emphasize the importance of serving the community.

FGS NZ has been upholding Venerable Master’s idea of serving the community wholeheartedly. Venerable Master’s vision of sharing good values through arts and cultures to construct a harmonious society has been sustained. Various

barriers such as race, ethnicity, language, nationality and age haven been overcome. This fosters mutual understanding and happiness, while demonstrating the enriching outcomes of purifying the heart. Abbess Manshin complimented BLIA members worldwide in her speech for their bravery and great teamwork. She acknowledged the impact this has in contributing to the harmony of society and how sticking to one’s vows and shouldering responsibilities can add colour to multiculturalism. Localisation is not confined to local geographical location, but rather spans across the entire world, projecting forward into the future. Venerable Master once said, “Localisation comes in many forms, such as language, social custom, habit and education,” which refines our understanding of localisation. We will have to be futuristic in order to expand one’s growth, which will further portray a deeper context in a multicultural society.

Creating a Space of Purification for the Local Guardians

Area Commander Inspector Scott Gemmell of Manukau East Police Station proposed a space of reflection for his colleagues at the station. Senior Sergeant Anson Lin of Manukau East Police Station recently told Abbess Manshin that many police officers who visited the Temple adored the tranquil atmosphere that allowed them to physically and mentally recharge. He hopes to accommodate the spiritually-purifying atmosphere of the Temple to the station. He asked for the Temple’s assistance in designing a space to purify the mind of the police officers in the front line to transform themselves.

Abbess has been very concerned about the babysitters of the community who have taken care of

the public in the front line for many years. Thus, the Temple joyfully offered assistance to SS Anson. Abbess visited the station with the Temple Team to discuss the design and construction work in detail, and to ensure the project is carried out effectively.

In the early morning of 24th April 2022, Abbess and a team of 10 went to the station to start the project. The construction team started the works in a timely manner. A five-meter-long wooden bench was specially designed by Abbess in order to settle one’s mind. The wood bench was painted with earthy colours to allow the officers to restore themselves with the power of nature, and bring themselves back to their roots. Hence, they can

re-energize and empower oneself.

Snr Sgt Anson and Sgt Steve assisted with transplanting the Nanas from the Temple’s garden as well as laying out the stones around the tree. In addition, a stone light symbolizing a different land, but sharing the same skies as the Temple was delivered to the Police Station to bless and brighten up everyone’s hearts. The entire project was achieved within 8 hours without delay.

Snr Sgt Anson appreciated Abbess and the team for creating a space filled with calmness for the public in such a short time frame. The Chan garden offers a peaceful atmosphere that has created a tranquil environment for the police officers to recharge.

The Temple has organised multiple activities for students, including learning Temple greeting, Tai Chi, mindfulness meditation, making lotus flower origami, writing Chinese Calligraphy, striking the wishing bell, and interaction with NZ Police. Furthermore, the Temple added an incense offering session for senior students this year. Some students spontaneously visited the Main Shrine and learned how to worship Buddha from Venerable. The highlight of the education program this year was Laba Rice, a newly developed menu that suits the local taste. The meaning of the Laba Rice is to encourage students to gain strength in order to apply the 3G4G values in daily life. Many students grabbed more than one bowl during the refreshment time. One of the students said, “Laba Rice from the Temple is the most delicious food in the world”.

Abbess Manshin shared that the 3G4G Festival of Cultural Sharing was organised since 2014 and has become an influential education program for locals. Over the past eight years, 50 schools and 25,000 students, teachers and parents walked into the Temple because of 3G4G. BLIA members NZ serve the community with the spirit of giving from Venerable Master

Hsing Yun to improve the value of life meanwhile constructing a harmonised homeland.

The 3G4G education program has received numerous feedback from schools via email, Facebook, and the newsletter. Several principals commented that the 3G4G value helped instil good values in students, which aligned with the school’s values. Teacher Teresa from Farm Cove Intermediate School said that the students enjoyed the activities, particularly the calligraphy writing and mindfulness meditation. Most of the parents and teachers who visited the Temple for the first time were delighted by this valuable cultural experience.

Area commander of Counties Manukau East Inspector Scott

Gemmell has been supportive and interested in this program. In one visit, he encouraged the students to be kind and be a nice person to the community. He appreciated Abbess and her team, who always take action to take care of the community.

In addition, school community police officer Senior Sergeant Matt Green, Constable Ian Willets, Constable Piho and other police officers fully supported the education program. They interacted with the students using fun and engaging role-playing sessions to encourage them to make the right decisions in life before temptation.

The Temple cherishes the opportunities to work together with schools and police to build a harmonious society for the nation.

relieve the pressure on the school. He thanked the Temple’s contribution to the community.

Principal Avatea acknowledged that nearly 100 schools were blessed by Temple’s kindness, empathy, understanding, and urgency to make things happen so quickly. He said this brought sunshine into the school’s life. Abbess appreciated the NZ Police for sending many officers to collaborate with BLIA members to complete the emergency relief. 2022 FGS Auckland Cherry Blossom Festival

Classic Car Show Gather Community Together & Create Surprise

In order to share the values of 3G4G with the community, and to brighten and purify one’s mind, FGS Buddhist Temple Auckland held a Neighborhood Day on 3rd September and a Cherry Blossom Festival on 11th & 12 th November 2022. There were many exciting activities, including an education booth from St John and the Fire & Emergency NZ, a Classic Car Show, local market stalls, art exhibition, Temple tour, mindfulness tea meditation, Baby & Children Blessing Festival and more. These events brought thousands of people from the community together.

The classic cars lined up in front of the green field were positioned in

alignment with the ancient buildings of the Temple. This aesthetically pleasing presentation attracted a big crowd to take photos.

Another highlight was the tea meditation which served as a relaxed session away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing one to feel the peacefulness and serenity of the heart. Officers from the Police Department were also onsite to help the public install tamper-proof hex screws on their car plates. This was a kind initiative to help protect the community. St John participated in the event to educate the public by sharing the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques

and first aid knowledge. The Fire & Emergency team also prepared a mobile simulated disaster room to allow people of all ages to experience fire emergencies. This experience helped to raise the community’s safety awareness and taught them relevant emergency measures they can implement within their homes.

NZ T-EARTH Project

Planting to Restore the Ecosystem

According to the latest demographic information, the global population has exceeded 8 billion people, yet 60% of the forests that protect the earth on which we depend have been deforested. Drink a cup of tea, plant a tree, adopt a piece of land, only through the concerted action of all human beings can we protect our Mother Earth!

In response to the T-EARTH Project promoted by BLIA HQ, BLIA North and South Island carried out a total of 19 tree planting activities from October 2021 to July 2022. Over 2,000 saplings and 1,000 shrubs were planted, working towards the One

Billion Trees Programme initiated by the New Zealand government.

In particular, on 18th June 2022, 20 BLIA North Island members participated in the annual Community Planting Day 2022 at Mangemangeroa Reserve, with 80 volunteers from the community, to work on the restoring of coastal forests along the Mangemangeroa Estuary. A total of 400 Karamu saplings and shrubs were planted within an hour. Jim Duckworth, the founder of FOM, shared that he was so impressed by the BLIA members for their neat attire and the professionality of the Team.
