Port Macquarie Surf School has reached a very successful benchmark. 40 YEARS IN BUSINESS! ALTHOUGH THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CHANGES OVER THE YEARS, the message remains the same - love what you do and you won’t work a day in your life.

H

i Pete. This year marks a huge milestone for Port Surf School – 40 years in business – such a huge accomplishment. What inspired you to start Port’s original surf school? I was always involved in surfing competitions in my youth and achieved successful results throughout my career. Coaching surfers initially commenced when I was approached by Jim and Maureen Brabant to coach their son, Marcus, to assist him with his surfing and contest strategies. I had known Jim for a long time as he took me under his wing when I was a grommet taking me surfing up and down Surfing Australia the coast. developed a Coaching Marcus coaching course in 1981 was so rewarding that and I was one of the I wanted to help other first to complete the young local surfers with course and from then their surfing. I started with Saturday lessons it became a part time and then as word got profession until full around I was coaching time in 1999 when our Tuesday and Thursday sons Wayne and Grant afternoons (after school) became involved in the and had programs business. for intermediate and advanced surfers with fitness and technique drills all revolving around having fun. Initially, I did it for the love of surfing and didn’t charge for my time. Surfing Australia developed a coaching course in 1981 and I was one of the first to complete the course and from then it became a part time profession until full time in 1999 when our sons Wayne and Grant became involved in the business. How has surfing instruction and coaching changed over the years?

Now there are a number of different levels in coaching and it is also compulsory that you have to update your coaching credentials every two years including a certain number of hours in coaching, current Ocean Safety qualifications (Surf Rescue Certificate, Bronze Medallion, Ocean Safety Surf Coach Award or equivalent), current First Aid qualification, current CPR qualification, current Working With Children Check, completion of the Play by the Rules – Child Protection course and current state association membership. What are some standout memories you hold from those early days and your time as a surf instructor? Oh wow – there are a lot of standout memories. The most memorable would be coaching our sons and watching them achieve their goals in surfing, travelling around the world competing in the WQS (World Qualifying Series) and then working alongside them and seeing them coach with the same passion and love of the sport that I had. Another was camping a few years ago and a lady paddled out, who I hadn’t seen for years, and we realised that I had coached her at a young age and there she was out there surfing with me while her husband was on shore looking after their children. In 1999, your sons Wayne and Grant stepped in as head coaches, and continued to carry on the family business. It must have been great to keep the business in the family. It has been a pleasure to work alongside both sons. Like all partners we did have some differences of opinions but you just have to be flexible with your ideas and let the boys express their ideas. Chris and I realised what their best attributes were as far as the business was concerned and let them take control of these elements of the business. Continued over... GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

the school full time and have many years of experience under your board. Tell us about your love and passion for the surf school. I was drawn to surfing at an early age, it was probably inevitable with my heritage, but I loved the freedom and feeling of fun that riding a wave gives you. It was and still is a way to express yourself, an artform, yet also a place where you can socialise with your mates or surf in solitude. This passion for surfing took me, with my brother and mum and dad at times all over Australia and the world competing in surf comps. While in Europe competing on the WQS, Dad contacted myself and Grant to see if we wanted to go into partnership with him in the local Surf School. I love sharing the passion I have and knowledge of the industry to all our customers. To have a successful business operating for 40 years that in itself is satisfying. Tell us about a typical day in the life of running the surf school. Typical day starts around 5.30am where we get up and drop the trailers to the beach, check surf conditions for the day, and do the daily surf report. After this, we head home to grab all the equipment for the day (boards, wetsuits, camera, rash vests etc), grab a quick breakfast and head to one of the amazing beaches in the area to run our intermediate and advanced before school This year we are sessions. These days are inspirational to see these children develop and grow, however small or large in a new environment. In your quieter seasons, another hat you wear is the teacher’s hat. Mr Huddo, what is it that you enjoy about this contrast? Teaching is not really a contrast in careers – it essentially is the same, it’s just a different classroom and learning environment that I work in. Not many people know but really I’m a nerd! I love reading, playing chess, learning – I have two degrees (environmental science with honours and a Dip Ed in teaching) and I was dux of my school. I love passing on knowledge, whether it be in the surfing classroom or the more academic one. I think both work well together, the skills I have in communicating and gaining people’s trust in the surf help in the classroom and learning about the pedagogy of teaching helps in the surf school. This may sound weird, but probably the best thing I love about being a teacher, except from getting the students to learn without even knowing that they are, is dressing up! Wearing my other suit and tie is not normal for me so I feel special. Thanks Pete and Wayne. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

Louise F LEM ING W I S E B E R R Y

Full time living, part time working is what I try to model in my family/team. This doesn’t mean that work is part time, rather we should live our lives in such a way that whilst we are busy making a living we don’t forget to make a life.

W

here did your passion for real estate begin? Funny story, it was a bad mistake that turned into the best decision of my life. We wanted to sell an investment property on the Central Coast. At that time we did what most sellers do and chose the agent based on who had the lowest commission… worst mistake. So, we fired that one as you really do get what you pay for. We then hired another agent who happened to be a Wiseberry agent, Darin Butcher. I got to know him well, one day he said to me “why don’t you consider a career in the industry?” After the first experience with the cheaper agent I realised that there was room for improvement in the industry. Best decision. Tell us a bit about yourself and your family? Ok, well I am a super crazy plant lady, if I’m not working I’m in my garden! I enjoy travelling, reading a good book, taking off in my motor home or motor bike! I actually own a Harley Davidson, I love hitting the road and clearing my head (people don’t believe that I ride a Harley but it’s true). I live with my partner Steve Hurrell, he runs his own business driving a bobcat. My daughter Taylee is a 2nd year Paramedicine student at CSU, my son Braith has finished school and is doing an apprenticeship at Blackbutt Engineering, and my youngest son Jarim is still

at high school in year 9 at Mackillop. What was behind the decision to come to Port Macquarie and continue your real estate career? There were a few reasons behind my decision. I almost left the industry as I was struggling with the “guilt thing” working mums tend to go through when we spend a lot of time away from the kids. Right at that time I was offered the opportunity to buy into the existing Wiseberry office with Stephen Thompson who has now been my business partner for the past 10 years. I figured if I was my own boss I could run my days not let the days run me. I also wanted to bring my kids up in a beautiful place that offered great schooling and opportunity for them. Wiseberry is holding a super important event run by the Wiseberry Foundation, can you tell us a bit more about this Foundation and how it got started? We want to show the community that we are more than just a brand. We are committed to bettering our communities and those in it. The foundation was started I believe because the Wiseberry network as whole can do more then an individual. Whilst most experiences we encounter are of a positive nature, some are not. When we identify people either within the community or within our network who fall on hard times due to illness or tragedy we can step

in and help. Our motto is different in the way we care. What is this Empower event all about and how can those who would like to attend find out more

information? We realise the past 18+ months, between bushfires, Covid, floods and just everyday struggles that there are a lot of people suffering, whether that be by the effects of being isolated due to Covid, loss of a job or home or even the loss of a family member. We wanted to organise a day of inspiration, free to anyone who needs it. We want to bring hope and let our communities know that we are here to help. You can find more on Facebook @wiseberryfoundation, or visit wiseberryfoundation.org/empower Why is it so important to maintain a work/ life balance, especially in today’s fast paced society? Full time living, part time working is what I try to model in my family/team. This doesn’t mean that work is part time, rather we should live our lives in such a way that whilst we are busy making a living we don’t forget to make a life. Work smarter not harder is my motto, it’s not the hours you put in but what you put into the hours that counts. This way, you get to enjoy a work/life balance, and that has never been more important than in these times.

G ACTIVE WEAR G Active-wear is a unique business on the Mid North Coast and owner MICHEALA WALSH is very proud of what she has created; functional, custom-fi ed and specially designed activewear to fit your own body shape...

H

i Micheala. You are a local Laurieton woman running a very talented activewear business along with a dancewear business. Before we get into that, tell us about yourself, your background and your connection to the area. I am 48, married and a mother to three beautiful adult children. I have lived on the Mid North Coast since 2002, coming from Sydney but growing up in Tamworth. From a young age I have had a passion for dance and always had a need to be creative in some way or another. While raising my children dancing took a back seat, but after moving to the Mid North Coast it was time to slip on the ballet shoes once again. I went from dancing for a bit of fun and exercise to teaching ballet for 11 years at Allstars Studio in Laurieton. In this time, I also opened a dance store in Laurieton (Dance Dreams Dancewear) that I owned and operated for 8 years. We relocated the business to Port Macquarie after about 12 months to meet demand. While I owned Dance Dreams my creative side kicked in and I launched my own

My passion is to help women feel good about what they are wearing, whether it is for a workout or to go for brunch with girlfriends. We all know what it is like to wear something that doesn’t quite fit. I have had such positive feedback from my customers. They love that they get to choose certain elements to get the right fit and often

tell me it is the best activewear they have had. Which makes me so happy. How have you marketed your brand on a larger scale? To be honest I find marketing quite overwhelming. As a small business I know getting the marketing right is really important, but there seems to be so many elements and knowing where to start and where to spend your money is really quite intimidating. I recently reached out to Vanessa from the Style Vibe and Natalie O’Donnell Photography to help with my branding content to help with my social media and give me more personal content to share with my customers. You wear many hats within the business. How do you go about balancing your work/life commitments? Where do I start! I don’t sew the garments, but my role includes designing, choosing fabrics, website, social media, bookkeeping, cutting, heat pressing logos, dealing with customers and marketing. Since Covid, a lot changed in the business – I took over full control of G Active as my then business partner decided to retire from manufacturing. Things have really ramped up, I have been working with new awesome

machinists who have over 30 years’ experience in the industry, we have been busy creating new designs and releasing new collections. The last 12 months have been a challenge for sure and I have been so lucky to have so much support from my family, friends and the community. Having grown children, it does take a bit of pressure off of my life commitments, but I try and make sure I finish work early enough to go workout with my husband 3-4 days a week at our local CrossFit Centre ADP, and have weekends away where possible. I‘m now at the age that I want a successful career but also have a good work/ life balance, so it’s important to use that time to recoup and just keep my mind clear and happy. What’s next for you? What’s next is to continue to work with as many women as I can to get a better understanding of what their needs are for more functional activewear. I want to offer more custom options online so all women can have the choice of getting the best fit, not only face to face. If good quality custom activewear is what you’re after you can contact me via email contact@gactive-wear.com or through the website www.gactive-wear.com. ake us back to when you first took an interest in the creative industry and why you chose to expand that by starting your own business. Ever since I could remember I have always had a love for taking pictures. Growing up I always had some form of a camera whether it was a polaroid or a disposable camera.

I always loved documenting moments such as friends’ birthdays, sleep overs and portraits of my loved ones. I purchased my first DSLR camera after the birth of my first son in 2016. I wanted to capture all of his milestones. My love for photography grew and I began to explore different styles of photography. I began photographing nature and wildlife which then went on to photographing people. I was most interested in capturing the beauty of my culture. After 2 years of teaching myself photography and finding my style, I decided I wanted to turn my hobby into a career. How has Barefoot Wandering grown and developed over the years as you have grown and developed as a woman? As I have grown in my business and as a mother, there has been a shift in what I prioritise. What I started as a creative release and hobby, grew into a passion project, and as recognition of my work grew that project made the natural transition into more of a business.

That said, while I have worked on finding my style and honed in on the important aspects of life that I strive to showcase, I feel my vision has not changed since I started Barefoot Wandering; that being providing a platform for insights into motherhood, culture, my people, femininity, and the natural world. Tell us about your style and how it reflects not only you, but your wonderfully rich Aboriginal culture. My style has been described as soft, emotive, and earthy. My work reflects my personality and my deep connection to country and culture. I feel of late there has been a spike in non-Aboriginal creatives using Aboriginal culture as a trend to gain a following which can dilute and misinterpret our people. I am a passionate believer in keeping culture alive through learning from it, growing by it and passing it on to our next generation. I am also a firm believer that we are the knowledge holders of our ancestry, and it is our place to tell that story. I hope that by holding space that belongs to Aboriginal people in the mainstream, I encourage other Aboriginal creatives to be confident in their talents and know that our input should never be part of a quota and is an essential and necessary part of ensuring our culture remains the oldest continuous culture on this earth. Talk to us about these powerhouse cultural shots you take and your vision behind it all. My vision is to show how beautiful my culture I feel of late there is. During my experience has been a spike as a model, I noticed a in non-Aboriginal lack of representation and creatives using pay gaps for Aboriginal Aboriginal culture as a people within the trend to gain a industry. Through my following which can photography I aim to dilute and misinterpret showcase the beauty of our people. our people to a wider shines through in the audience and generate end product. In my early days of photography, comparing my work to others meant I would look at my own in a negative light. I had unrealistic expectations that my work would be at a high level, even as a beginner photographer. I put in hours and hours of work to find my unique style and perfect my technique. The Happy Boxes Project is close to my heart, coming from a remote community myself. I am currently serving as a Director on the Board for the Happy Boxes Project and have embraced the opportunity to give back to my own community and others, being fundamental in the process of establishing networks and gathering donations from generous gift-givers. After moving to the coast, it hadn’t even registered with me that people that have lived in this country their entire lives aren’t aware of the issue of access inequality right here in Australia. When I was growing up in Lightning Ridge, there was only a small general store called Food Lands to service multiple towns within the Walgett Shire. This meant some would have to travel for hours to buy the items needed for the home, provided those items were in stock. I’m reminded that this is the same story for

That’s right, we also offer day tours and birthday parties. The sessions cater to all ages and levels of experience, so beginners are welcome and no experience is needed. Group sessions are generally ages 4-16, anyone outside of that age bracket is best to book in for a private session. Sessions start with a stretch and we focus on the basics, so that everyone has a solid foundation to stand on. The basics covered include stance, foot positioning, pushing, stopping, turning, manuals, ollies, rolling down ramps and drop ins. 2021... AKA the year of the QR code.

or sure these curious little patterned squares began to spread quicker than Covid last year. From their humble beginnings as a quirky offsider to a standard web link, they really entered the stratosphere of spotlight, coming into their own in the ‘contactless’ age of pandemic we now live in. The reality of life these days is that there’s no way of escaping the ‘check in’. Gone are the days where you can just breeze in and out, forget your phone or avoid downloading the app. And why stop at mere ‘check ins’. When you think about it there’s an infinite number of webpages to scan to. Who really needs anything physical at all, to be sure there’s all the information we’ll ever need about anything on our handheld digital device… And what about we take it one step further into the realm of interactivity and direct communication? In the hospitality world there’s a whole new ballgame of QR ordering, where it is possible not to have to speak to an actual person to take your order, in fact you just scan a code that takes you right to a full menu, with detailed information about all dishes, the ability to add notes to customise your order, to be able to view and pay your bill at any time via the code… the sky

36 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

focus

is the limit. You have access to a wealth of knowledge about the product you are ordering, you can tailor make your order exactly the way you want it and you are able to not only order at any time but pay at any time. What’s not to love right? For the first time when you’re out for brekky and you want to squeeze in that extra coffee you can do so without having to desperately try to flag someone down to take you order or wait in a queue at the counter. No more trying to get someone to bring your bill, waiting for your payment to be processed. No more human error on your order (apart from your own, infinitely more forgivable than someone else’s). Access to knowledgeable info on all ingredients, dietary and allergen advice. The list goes on, it really is revolutionary on so many levels. Except for… and yep of course it is way too good to be true. And it might seem obvious to many what I’m going to say next. There’s something majorly missing here with all this happy go lucky clicking away and that is of course the factor of the presence of other humans. Sure someone will still be coming to plonk down what you ordered so efficiently on the table for you (unless the next step is done via drone – come to think of it, that’s

probably the next thing!) But the major problem with this whole scenario is that there’s really absolutely no ‘hospitality’ here. And isn’t this the name of the actual industry… The welcome of an actual human, banter, laughter, storytelling – connection in so many forms is lost in the midst of this process. And for sure this ‘connection’ can be somewhat flawed at times. It can make mistakes, it can be having a bad day, it can be ‘human’. As we valiantly progress further into this brave new world, which certainly now, more than a year into this pandemic, clearly isn’t reverting back to the ways of old ever again – we need to be very careful in negotiating an ultra-fine sense of balance between the relentless uptake of digital technologies whilst maintaining the very basics of human civility and society which depend on prioritising face-to-face interaction wherever possible. Hopefully we’ll reach a place where it will be possible to attain a higher level of efficiency and convenience without losing too much of precious little moments we can only access through communicating directly with our fellow humans. Contactless… with contact.

H

ey Guys. Where did your passion for cooking and creating mouthwatering meals come from? Simon - Growing up I was the middle child of three boys. I loved to bake. That passion became my direction to become a Chef. My wife and family saw my passion and encouraged me to create a space of my own where I had the autonomy to share my love of baking. Caramels was born and has allowed me to bake and create till my heart is content! Proudly I have not bought a single cake in since opening my doors. My signature dish is Caramel Banana Pie (Banoffee)! Neil - For me, it was ‘love at first slice’. My passion for cooking started at a young age, helping my mother cook the family meals every night to get out of doing the washing up. From then I decided cooking great food would be the career choice for me. I have been lucky enough to work with some great chefs/friends in my time who have made a massive impact on me and the food I produce. The time I spent travelling and working overseas has definitely been my biggest influence to help create such flavoursome dishes.

Our menu and popular Grab N Go cabinet has been matched to suit our unique location and customer base who are often on the go and wanting tasty options quickly! Our aim is to provide well priced, delicious, fresh and healthy options. The addition of our take-home dinner meals during Covid has been a huge success and we are even cooking on a regular basis night meals for a few busy local families. Essentially our ideas come from looking at what our customers need or are asking of us! We love that we can offer everything dine in or very quickly to take away! What are your favourite dishes on the menu? This is a tough one... Our chefs are forever changing our special boards and coming up with amazing dishes matched to the season and fresh produce on offer. everything on site. Nothing better than a fresh scone with jam and real cream! Caramels is iconic to not only Lake Cathie but the whole region, why is this? We are a young (somewhat still young) local couple who took a leap of faith to start a cafe out of a 24m2 space. The community see what we have done and the passion and hard work that we and our team over the past almost 14 years have invested to making it not only a successful cafe, but a hub for the Lake Cathie community and surrounds. Tell us about the coffee that is served? We serve Byron Bay Coffee Company. We have been with them since day one and absolutely love our Nero blend that we sat on the farm and tried at Newrybar 14 years ago and fell in love with! For those who haven’t been to Caramels, how can they find you? We are located in the Woolworths shopping complex in Lake Cathie, nothing flash in terms of scenery but great service, coffee and food... and loads of parking!

ll of Critters Distillery’s spirits are brewed, fermented and distilled in-house using 100% Australian ingredients, which is a point of difference in white spirits production in the Australian distilling industry. Australia has seen an increase in white spirit production driven by the accessibility of bulk refined ethanol, where it can be flavoured, rebranded and sold onto the market. Investing years of training and research into craft spirit production, particularly specialising in brewing and fermenting, co-owner and Head Distiller Chris Fraser chooses quality over quantity. Critters ethos of ‘paddock to glass’. Earlier this year Critters Distillery was awarded a Silver Medal for Australian Pure Neutral Vodka in the prestigious World Drink Awards held in London in February, competing with over 170 other category entrants from all around the globe. Critters Distillery is making some of the finest craft spirits catching the attention of other Australian and International distillers. Converting both wine and gin drinkers, Critters Vodka is sweet on the palate with citrus notes (grapefruit and lime), the

sophisticated heart of plum and spices like peppercorn. To appreciate the true characteristics of the spirit, Chris recommends it’s best served neat on ice or with a Mediterranean Tonic Water and a fresh wedge of lemon. Critters Distillery is committed to investing in sustainable practices within their business wherever possible. They choose to adopt a hierarchical approach to goods, services and materials, with local and Australian being prime priority. Reusing grain and liquid waste products from production, to

sourcing recycled cardboard packaging, are some examples of the practices currently adopted in an effort to become more sustainable. Opening to tastings and tours in February 2021, owners Chris and Nicola Fraser have seen visitors from across Australia return to the Northern Beaches of the Coffs Coast to relive the Critters Distillery Tasting Experience. Tours are booked online through Eventbrite and typically operate on weekends, but can be scheduled during the week, which are currently favoured by corporate organisations. During these tasting experiences, visitors indulge in a selection of local and Australian cheeses, salmon and prosciutto along with unique accompaniments, and olives paired with bespoke seasonal cocktail tasters served by Kamil Piotrowski. In addition, distiller Chris Fraser shares his wide knowledge and insights into distillery production and Australian craft spirits. i Kerry. This June long weekend, the Hastings Sustainability Network proudly presents the Hastings Farm Gate Tour. For those that are new to the concept, tell us about it. The Hastings Farm Gate Tour is a selfdrive event which takes place in the Greater Hastings, Port Macquarie and Camden Haven region over the three days of the June long weekend, Saturday 12, Sunday 13 and Monday 14 June 2021. Fifteen properties will be opening their gates to visitors at scheduled times over those three days. This event offers visitors a unique opportunity to visit farms growing food sustainably – many of which are not usually open to the public. Past tours have proved a great way to connect with like-minded people and learn about new ways/practices – even if you don’t own acreage. What can people expect to take away from the weekend? Firstly, a lot of fun! There is a great buzz around the ridges over the three days of the Farm Gate Tour. And, as you say, connection. Not only with other like-minded visitors but also with the farmers growing our food. Those of us who live in an urban environment are completely meshed with agriculture but all too often there is a perceived disconnect. By visiting farms where our food is being produced, we are reconnecting and gaining an understanding about how this food is being grown, how our environment is being looked after, how we are moving forward together. These regenerative farmers are innovative, they are growing not only produce but soil too, they are making choices that provide better nutrition, and a more resilient environment. We can learn so much by connecting with these farmers. And what better way to learn than by having fun at the same time!

et on the banks of the Camden Haven River in North Haven, buskers, market stalls, live music and kids’ activities will entertain. Kicking off the event is a heroes parade honouring the emergency service volunteers and workers who have stood by us through drought, fire and flood. Supported by the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce, NSW Government and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, the festival is an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate our resilience. “The community came together during the hardest of times, this is a chance to relax and have fun,” said event coordinator Tahshi Payne.

“Let’s recognise our spirit of generosity, our dedication to giving each other a hand, and show visitors how we come together to keep our community strong.” The parade begins at 11am, from Pioneer Street to Club North Haven for the festival’s official opening, accompanied by the Camden Haven Community Band and shiny vehicles from the Laurieton Vintage Car Club. Locals and VIPs will stretch their creative muscle in a Pottery Throwdown at the main stage.

Club North Haven will have their ice skating rink in operation to help burn off the delicious food from local cafes and market stalls. Live music will come from local bands like Goody 2 Shoes and the incredible Ghost Road. As the sun sets, find a riverside vantage point and watch the night sky light up with a colourful fireworks display against the backdrop of North Brother Mountain. NiV C A R o he A L The team at Got Ya Back Productions have been busy the last 12 months and are set to bring their very own recreation of a famous piece into a show that introduces ALL of us back into the awesomeness of the theatre.

H

i Steph. It’s been a little while since we caught up. What’s been happening in the life of theatre? Well, after a year of getting creative outside the theatre, producing films, drive-in movies and other unique events, we’ve moved back indoors with our first professional theatre production since BANJO. With this production, just like BANJO, we will tour throughout the state and further afield. But before we do, we want to premiere it in our hometown of Port Macquarie and run a long season of performances at The Basement at Port Panthers. It’s called Carnival of the Animals. French composer Camille Saint-Saëns wrote this famous classical work in the late 1800’s. For many years now, Carnival of the Animals has 54 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

My husband, Tim (former Hi-5 member/ director), will be backing up Mat on piano, as well as performing the gallant role of the Master of Ceremonies (Lion). I will be drawing on my experience as a professional contemporary dancer and having some fun with the acting side of things too! As visual storytellers, how much have you enjoyed the experience in bringing this all together? So far, it’s been a tremendous ride drawing on everyone’s creative ideas and ways of really

bringing this show to life through music and physical theatre. We all have children of different ages from 1 up to 31, and it’s their experience and reactions that we think about when developing a lot of the show. As the show has very limited dialogue (the music and our physicality tell the story), the visual aspect is so important and we have had a lot of fun creating and building something that is going to capture and immerse our audiences. We have such a soft spot for smaller theatres and venues. As an audience member, it’s more intimate and you almost feel part of the show itself. This will definitely be the case as we bring The Basement to life with our Carnival of The Animals. It will certainly be a sensory feast for all! BANJO was such a huge success, do you have plans to re-launch that production again soon? We all miss performing BANJO so much. If we didn’t re-launch it there would be some very grumpy folks - including ourselves! Yes,

we plan to tour BANJO within the next 12 months. It’s strange to think the last time we toured it was 2019. Looking back, what was important about BANJO is that, as a production, it really changed how regional touring was defined. Traditionally ‘regional touring’, in our industry’s eyes, was about taking shows first produced in the city and touring them throughout the regions – this is still very much the case. However, BANJO was the first production to first be produced in regional NSW, tour other regions and then finish in the city (Sydney) to sold out houses! It was amazing to say at the final performance at the Eternity Theatre in Darlinghurst, that every part of this production was made right here in Port. At that performance, our sound and lighting operators, Sean O'Brien and Warren Brown, were also from Port – we were just so proud. We hope that ‘Carnival of the Animals’ can follow a similar trajectory and, like BANJO, show our national theatre industry that what’s happening in regional NSW, more specifically Port Macquarie, is worth taking note of. Thanks Steph. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

JOHN ii o

i John. As we inch closer to 2022, and after five decades in the entertainment industry, you are using this year to tour across Australia with your ‘Winding Back’ Tour. Tell us about the significance of the tour and what we can expect. ‘Winding Back’ at this stage really means, less concerts. I find myself rediscovering some of my older songs that bring back fond memories. I love to take my audiences on a journey through my life and talk about the great characters and landscapes of this ancient land. You would have many, many fond memories of not only performances you’ve done, but people/places/experiences you’ve come across. Which special one stands out most to you and why? Leading 80,000 Aussies in singing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ at the 1998 Bledisloe Cup victory over the All Blacks is unforgettable. My friendship with the Hayes family on Undoolya station near Alice Springs and with Warren H Williams (an Aranda elder) gave me a connection with the very heart of what this ancient land is all about. The Outback has inspired me so much. This would be a difficult

question – close to admitting which child is your favourite – but do you have a favourite song amongst your many lyrical numbers? You’re right about that. But ‘Galleries of Pink Galahs’ sums up the battles of wheat farming, when we were all together as a family in an old homestead on ‘Tralee’, north of Moree. It also tells my story of leaving the land for my new career in the music industry. I consider it a ‘country’ song without any references to ‘Country and Western’. I don’t consider myself a ‘County and Western’ singer; I sing about the country. You have a plethora of honours under your belt, including being inducted into the Aria hall of fame, and being awarded an Order of Australia recognising your significance as an Australian icon. How do you feel about this amazing legacy you’ve paved for Australia? I have always thought we have been held back in our minds as Australians because of our colonial/convict past. I have been determined to be part of a new confidence in ourselves as an independent nation. I am proud of singing with my own accent about everything Aussie. The cringe is disappearing. Australian art and music is unique. We should be proud of it and become a republic.

oo e LEWIS TRESTON This month Port Macquarie is set to experience a new theatre production - Follow Me Home. Talented playwright Lewis Treston brings us something a li le different to his usual repertoire; a creative departure that opens the door for contemplation and honest communication.

H

i Lewis. You’re a longtime playwright best known for bringing thought provoking productions to the stage. Firstly, tell us where the ambition to work in theatre came from, and your earlier beginnings within the creative world. On the advice of a teacher, my mum put me in drama classes from an early age to help with my literacy problems, which is very ironic considering what I do now. I’d like to think I’ve come a long way since then. It’s very hard to make a career as a playwright and though it has never been easy, I consider myself very lucky to have received so many great opportunities. A few years after graduating from NIDA, ATYP gave me such a gift when they appointed me the playwright in residence with the company in 2016. Over the course of that year, I wrote a play called Hot Tub that went on to win Sydney Theatre Company’s Patrick White Playwright’s Award – when I found out, I was completely flabbergasted because I never thought such a deranged comedy would win such a prestigious award. Looking back, this was probably the most significant turning point in 58 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

enormously complicated web of intersecting social and political issues that influence and shape the experience of youth homelessness. Very early in the process of researching and writing Follow Me Home it became obvious that I needed to specifically focus on the human lived experience and the workshops were integral in achieving this. All the workshops were unique and memorable in their own way, but the session at the YP Space in Kempsey does stand out. At the YP Space, musician Kerry Digby ran a songwriting session to help those present express how they felt about their experiences. During this session, we stumbled about a lyric that I found haunting and beautiful: “my regrets follow me home.” Something about this lyric set to music seemed to communicate complex ideas about home, memory, the past and the struggle to overcome life’s challenges. Once the session was over, I remember texting Fraser Corfield (the Artistic Director of ATYP): “what do you think about Follow Me Home as a title…?” Obviously, he went for it. The play opens the door for honest communication. How do you see this play supporting not only young people, but their families and the wider community? What will people walk away with from the show? Hopefully Follow Me Home opens the door for young people to be honest about their experiences. I remember feeling really startled and disturbed by how many young people felt

ashamed about being homeless. Intellectually I understand why this is the case, but it is disheartening to realise there are probably a huge number of kids and teenagers in our communities who feel too ashamed to come forward and ask for help. I really hope this production in some small way makes it easier for young people experiencing homelessness to ask for support or fosters a deeper sense of understanding and empathy within the wider community. I’d strongly encourage local audiences from Port Macquarie, Kempsey and surrounds to attend the play if they can. It is a rare opportunity to see stories from their very own community on stage. Also, the wonderful staff from YP Space and Glasshouse Port Macquarie will be facilitating access to the show for 30 young people, currently identifying as homeless and utilising the services of YP Space. The team at YP Space do an incredible job at assisting young people get back on their feet, and the more people that attend the show are in effect saying, we want to understand, we see you and we support you. This year, ATYP is teaming up with the Glasshouse to give a select number of local student performers the chance to perform on stage at the Glasshouse as

part of the show. Tell us about this. This is an incredible money-cannot-buy opportunity for students from our region, to workshop, rehearse and perform with ATYP. Drama students have the chance to hone their dramatic skills with the Artistic Director and Cast in a virtual Masterclass, exploring and rehearsing each of the scenes in Follow Me Home. Students can then rehearse the scenes within their classroom. When ATYP arrive in Port Macquarie, they will rehearse the scenes with the students and select a number of them to participate in the production to be performed to the broader Port Macquarie Hastings Community at the Glasshouse on Thursday 19 August, 1pm. How can schools, teachers and groups get on board? Schools and Teachers just need to email education@glasshouse.org.au and register their interest for the engagement program. Alternatively, Schools are encouraged to book Drama or English Students to see the actual performance and take advantage of the special Education @ Glasshouse Student Price.

GALVIN BJP Physical Culture has encapsulated Emma Galvin. At just 13 years old, this youngster has been perfecting her skills and busily adding achievements to her name. Emma has big dreams on the horizon.

H

i Emma. Your love of BJP physical culture started at a very young age. Firstly, for those that don’t know you, please introduce yourself. Hi, my name is Emma Galvin and I am 13 years old. I have been doing physie for 10 years this year and hopefully many more. Physie is my most loved sport and passion and always will be. I started physie as a 3 year old girl and began to compete competitively at the age of 5. I fell in love with it from a very young age which overtook all of my other commitments. friendships whilst I’m there when I see girls from other clubs annually. We all have the same dream... to make it to the finals! You’re certainly dedicated and committed to your sport. What type of training is involved? Physie develops so many skills in girls... posture, strength, flexibility and most of all confidence. Twice a week after school we go to physie class and learn and perfect our dances. After class I come home and practise the work that needs fixing ready for the next class. I stretch everyday to increase my flexibility which helps with my physie. When I was younger I used to do my older sister’s class because my physie teachers always said it would only benefit my physie, which really helped. I also loved the challenge. You compete across NSW in a range of competitions. How’s that experience been and what are you most proud of

about yourself and your achievements? Us as a club travel to many competitions around NSW at interclubs, zone and nationals. The experience is so exciting because the competition is so different each time. It is always nerve wracking but fun. I love going away and staying in accommodation but the best part is waking up on a physie morning and getting butterflies at the thought of it. My proudest physie achievements are winning State in 2020, 5th place when I was 6 and getting first prize at zone champions 5 times. Who is your inspiration in the physie world? My inspiration in the physie world has got to be my physie teachers. They inspire me to

be my best, by showing me how to become who I am on the floor. Watching them go out and perform is always so much fun because I learn something every time. What are your dreams for the future? My dream for the future is to perform at the National Finals at the Sydney Opera House when I’m 15 years old. It would be an absolute dream to go out and compete at this level, but it will take hard work. I have started helping out teaching physie to the younger girls this year and hope to develop their skills as well as inspire them so they develop the same love for physie as I have. In the future I would love to be a teacher at our club and a BJP associate. Thanks Emma. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

or those who aren't familiar with Self Seen, what exactly is this organisation? Self Seen is a Non-for-profit organisation aiming to change the way the community and individual’s show up for mental health. They are a community-based group that promotes self-love, and selfempowerment. What were the reasons that yourself and the Elders team chose to get behind this and create the event? Health and wellness are such a high priority within our business, we are all about creating a connected community. Why? To let individuals know they aren't alone. To provide safe spaces for individuals to show up as they are to be seen and heard. To create new friendships. To be a part of a community that empowers, supports, and celebrates individuals for being uniquely themselves. For myself personally and working with our team i have seen first hand how real mental health is. I don’t believe there is anyone out in our community that as not been affected by mental health . wellness event aiming to highlight and support us in our endeavour to change the way we show up for mental health, individually and as a whole community. The event was a huge success, tell us about how the day unfolded? We started our Sunday morning right by enjoying a beautiful sunrise walk, meeting new friends and joining in on a fun f45 workout! We then refuelled and recharge by heading over to Westport Park for a free Breakfast thanks to the Elders Lifestyle Group. We also ran a raffle with over $2,000 dollars in prizes from local businesses who are all on board to support us, I ended up winning the raffle and decided to auction this off and in turn we were able to raise an additional $700 for Self Seen! How much was raised? We raised $2500 collectively for Men’s and Women’s mental health and this goes directly to Selfseen and the great work they do in the community!

With a background in Women’s Yoga, Ayurvedic Massage and a love for all things Indian, it was no big surprise when I travelled to Woolgoolga many years ago and found my home. Vibe S AV V Y VANESSA LAWRENCE

FROM THE STYLE VIBE

Hi everyone! It is great to be back with another Style Vibe Savvy column. This year is flying along fast! And with that I would like to share an a itude of gratitude for the opportunity to connect with you all once again!

T

his month I am calling out to all professionals, small business owners and those wanting to enhance the appearance of their personal brand, feel more confident at work or attract new clients and customers. Lately I’ve been working with busy professionals and some incredible local talent, such as Micheala Walsh – owner of G Activewear (check out her feature in this month’s Focus Mag!). All my clients have something in common, a fantastic range of products, provide excellent service and are driven by a genuine desire to be the best in their industry. Whilst utterly amazing in so many areas, the feedback I’ve received is many feel they are lacking the confidence to ‘put themselves out there’ and struggle to find the creativity in updating their personal style and project the right image. In a world where digital has taken over face to face – as busy professionals and small business owners it is vital we connect with our clients, colleagues and potential clients as best we can, whether that be via our social media pages, website or Zoom meetings. We all know the saying “A picture says a thousand words”, right? So it makes sense to ensure that each of your personal brand images provides a consistently genuine, professional and stylish statement about you! By assessing and evaluating your overall

TAKE THE FEAR OUT OF YOUR DENTAL TREATMENT. Nitrous oxide (more commonly known as “happy gas”) is a colourless, tasteless, slightly sweet smelling gas which has significant sedative and analgesic (painkilling) effects.

t has been used in Australia by dentists to treat anxious patients since 1847, with the technique we use today being refined back in the 1940s. Its long history of use has given the gas a proven safety record, being safe for use in patients with heart conditions, those on blood thinning medications, poor kidney function, children, and the elderly. In the dental office, the gas is administered by appropriately trained dentists through a small “hood” which rests over the nose, leaving the mouth and eyes completely unobstructed. The gas is delivered mixed with oxygen, with the percentage being “titrated” (adjusted) to a level specific for each patient to reach their lowest effective dose. MANAGING DIRECTOR OF FLOWER HOTELS

efore our event on Friday the 18th June at Settlers Inn, I quickly caught up with one of our guest speakers, former NRL coach Anthony Seibold. You are a passionate advocate for greater awareness and education around mental health in business and schools. What do you think are some of the barriers men face when it comes to their health? I feel the barriers to men’s mental health are in feeling judged as a man! It has been widely indoctrinated in our society that men need to tough it out... to not have a glass jaw so to speak and to deal with it by themselves internally. It is ok as man to ‘not be ok’ or to ask a mate or someone you trust for help. Selfreflection and checking in with yourself is key.

70 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

focus

In recent years you experienced substantial online abuse which impacted your own health. How important was your family and support network in dealing with those tough times? The abuse did have a significant impact on myself and even more so my family. It was a challenging time trying to deal with it and also trying to understand why people would go down that route and why the abuse was so widespread or so easily spread and accepted across social media platforms. People for whatever reason or with agendas wanted to hurt me. It was very unAustralian. My family, friends and close supports were key in providing me support. I take solace out of a very difficult situation that the Australian parliament are in the process of changing legislation around cyber bullying, harassment and defamation laws on social media platforms.

What role do places like pubs play in supporting men’s health and social connection? Pubs in Australia particularly in regional areas are the glue that binds communities. We all want to feel part of something bigger than ourselves, we essentially want to have connection and a feeling of belonging. That is what pubs provide for their community. A place where people can go and enjoy that connection. Thanks Anthony.

or many people, they have lost a job or even a home and normal habits of life haven’t been so normal. This has led to an increase in the amount of people in our community that suffer from anxiety, depression or a form of mental illness. It’s OK if you’re struggling to be able to talk about it, know that your mates have your back and certainly won’t be thinking differently of you, and support is always available. We found many of our regulars who enjoyed frequenting our venues couldn’t do so in Covid. It was important we were able to check in on them to make sure they were doing OK. We found through Covid, people missed mateship. We pride ourselves that our Pubs are the centre of our communities, a meeting place for everyone where you can create friendships and enjoy social interaction. I have built the business from scratch over the last 17 years, and now employ three full- time web developers and partner with several amazing collaborators, from photographers to marketers to deliver wholistic solutions to clients. It gives me great satisfaction to develop an understanding of each client’s business, create tailored solutions and watch their businesses grow over time. How have you adapted as time / technology changes? Many new technologies have emerged in the last two decades, which enrich the website user experience. As internet speed has improved, we’re able to make websites a lot more fun and engaging, through the use of video, vibrant photos and graphics. What have been some of your challenges, accolades and rewards? One of the biggest challenges I’ve encountered is scaling the business to employ more staff, while maintaining direct contact with all clients, as their single point of contact. Over the years I’ve got to know many clients just by their voice, and instantly recall past conversations across our journey together. It is very rewarding to have loyal, long term clients who continue to engage and recommend us to their friends and colleagues. We have supported all types of charity events by donating awards for Dancing with the Stars and Him in Heels just to mention a couple. Our family-run business has been locally owned since opening with its original owners Neil and Inez through to Jim and Sharon and now onto Mark and Sandra. Jim is still working as an important part of the team alongside our newest addition Holly. The business is very community orientated and customer service focused; we appreciate the ongoing local support that has allowed us to keep operating. We have always strived to supply quality products at a good price with a smile and a chat.

How has the business grown, expanded and changed over those years? The business has grown with the everexpanding population growth in the area and although we had a hard year with COVID-19 (as did many), we are looking forward to bouncing back this year. Our product range is always expanding and changing with current trends. The Name Badge and ID tags side of the business has continued to grow with our new website enabling us to produce these products for businesses from all over the country. With our three laser engravers, we can work with many materials such as timber, acrylics, anodised aluminium, stainless etching and much more. Today we find it hard to express that the business is no longer just a trophy shop as we supply Essential Energy, PRM Switchboards and many electricians with their electrical labelling, Birdon Marine and Bales Engineering with stainless etching and signage for the vessels they refurbish and build as well as builders and architects for their internal, toilet and direction signage. As a business, share your number one priority that you all strive toward offering here at Port Trophies. Just over 4 years ago we had Holly join the team and she has brought along her graphic

design experience to expand the products we offer and take advantage of our laser’s capabilities. We are now able to offer acrylic and timber event signage such as wedding seating plans, welcome signs, birthday and baby shower signage, name place cards and cake toppers. More than just trophies, what’s on offer? We have a range of giftware in our shop such as wine glasses, beer mugs, drink bottles, insulated stainless coffee and wine cups, clocks, pens and cheese boards; but we can also personalise things you bring in for birthdays, anniversaries or just thanks. We help preserve memories with memorial plaques, retirement plaques or even a ‘Thanks Coach’ plaque plus many more. Come and see our show room and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised with what you will find. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

he 26th May 2011 marks the day I presented my inaugural speech in Parliament with family, friends and colleagues watching on. Since then I’ve made over 800 speeches in the Chamber, represented the Parliament and the NSW Government locally, nationally and internationally and worked alongside my Parliamentary colleagues to deliver over $1 billion of investment across the Port Macquarie electorate. Ten years on, the privilege of serving my community has not been lost on me a single day whether I’m walking through the doors of one of the oldest establishments in the nation or I’ve picked up a coffee at a local café and headed into the office in Grant Street. I pledged my commitment on that same day to work relentlessly to deliver better services and infrastructure like the long awaited Lake Cathie Public School or the dedication of Westport Park as public open space. The last ten years have been a journey of incredible learning and extraordinary experiences marked by highs and lows, sometimes immense frustration and occasionally disappointment. But the setbacks have certainly been surpassed with the achievements that I know have made a genuine difference to people’s lives.

The Government’s investment locally has been impressive but the most gratifying aspect of being a local MP is not the media announcements of millions of dollars, not the photos at openings of new facilities or events but actually the prospect of changing the lives of individuals. Often we meet people when they are at their most vulnerable, when they’re anxious and distressed and I’m so privileged to work alongside staff that are as passionate and dedicated as I am and who will go to the nth degree to find solutions for those in need. It’s always so humbling to engage with and support our incredible volunteer community organisations with funding so they can deliver improved facilities for all of us to enjoy. They dictate the degree of positive engagement and happiness for each of us through the opportunities they provide for interactions and social relations. The changed landscape of Tacking Point and the Beach 2 Beach

footpath are perfect examples. In the months ahead we’ll see progress on the new police headquarters for Port Macquarie, an ambulance station for Lake Cathie, a modern HealthOne community centre at Laurieton, the anticipated PCYC and I’m hopeful the long awaited Ocean Drive duplication. There’s no resting on our laurels as we work to accommodate our fast-growing community and in partnership with all levels of Government and our expanse of innovative organisations and businesses I’m confident the road ahead will be positive and productive.

Since then we’ve grown the Majestic family, redeveloped our Port Macquarie and Nambour cinemas and recently added brand new cinemas in Kempsey and Wynnum QLD. Our aim is to bring a range of entertaining content and great experiences to the people in our areas. Tell us your greatest achievements as a business? It may sound cheesy, but our staff are our greatest achievement. We take huge pride and responsibility in the fact that we can often be someone’s first entry into the working world. Our Managers at all of our sites are long standing members of our team, with some even beginning as teenagers and advancing through to management level. How do you contribute to the community? We are focused on connecting, supporting and engaging with our local community on a variety of bases. We support local sporting teams each year with a Player of the Week initiative and have done this for many years. Our local donations list grows year on year. We’ve helped numerous not for profit groups with our Fundraising Tickets packages and one off events. We’ve collected bras, books, gifts, education supplies, personal hygiene supplies and food for local and national charity campaigns and support groups. On a basic level, our cinemas contribute an escape for our community, entertainment, a place of communal

connectedness and mental wellbeing. The ability to take a tour of the Louvre, fall in love in Rome, watch a Ballet in New York, or see Tom Cruise save the world, cinema contributes to the artistic participation and expression of a community. We’re dedicated to providing an array of experiences and content for our communities so regional audiences don’t miss out. What are you looking forward to over the coming 18 months? The cinema industry is just starting to see the light at the end of a very long tunnel. As the rest of the world begins to open up more and more, studios have begun releasing the BIG films for the BIG screen. There's nothing quite like watching a blockbuster at the cinema with strangers, the communal experience and togetherness is so much more cherished after recent times.

KIRINARI SUPPORT SERVICES

ell us about your experience in the Community Services industry. Well I started out doing group work for Grow NSW in Sydney in 1992. I thought if I am going to work in community services, it would be a good idea to get some qualifications! I then studied a Bachelor of Social Science, with my first professional role in Mental Health services in Cooma. I then moved to Port Macquarie (and have been here ever since!) for another role in Mental Health, firstly as a crisis case worker and latterly as a trainer for the HastingsMacleay local health district. I moved on to work as the inaugural Gambling Counsellor in the area, covering Port, Kempsey, Wauchope and Laurieton. At the same time I started my own part-time counselling practice, which continued till recently. I did a stint back in the Health Service as a Coordinator of Home and Community Care services, then accepted a role with House With No Steps as their inaugural Operations Manager for the Mid North Coast, also assisting in the establishment of services in the New England area. I then worked for a while in aged care/dementia support services before accepting a role as Clinician-Manager for Interrelate. Latterly I have worked as the Manager of the local homeless refuge for Vinnies and coordinating services for Wesley Mission’s new Community Hub in Taree.

I have now joined Kirinari Community Services as the People and Culture Leader Mid North Coast, based in Port Macquarie. I have also, along the way, completed qualifications in Health Management, Frontline Management and Executive Leadership and Innovation. What keeps you coming to work each and everyday? I really enjoy the challenges involved with providing quality services for people with disabilities, there is something new every day and no two days are the same. What have been some of your challenges, accolades and rewards? My biggest professional challenge was definitely establishing Disability Services for the Mid North Coast for House With No Steps (now Aruma). That was a fast-paced steep learning curve, but it put me in a great position to be taking on the current challenges in my new role with Kirinari Community Services. My fondest accolade was a regional recognition award for service establishment in Mid North Coast and one of

my greatest rewards was seeing the personal and professional growth in new Disability Service Leaders when I was the lead mentor in a “Pathways To Leadership” program over a four year period. Do you have a motto you work/live by? Yes, can I have three? That would be “I look at what people do, not what they say” (actions speak louder than words!), “it’s all about building relationships with people” and “always be kind, you don’t know what people are going through”. What are you looking forward to the most with your new role at Kirinari? I’m just looking forward to establishing high quality services that enrich people’s lives, with a strong focus on supporting the frontline staff to be the best version of themselves every day. Positive workplace culture leads to happy people and good services! Kirinari strives to ensure our services are innovative and focussed on the needs of our customers by putting them at the centre of their lives in terms of decision-making, control and choice.

ow old is The Other Chef? We sold our first jar of jam at local farmers markets in 2006, so 15 years! What keeps you coming to work every day? We love watching customers reactions when they taste our products, especially our new Truffled Black Garlic Mustard. How have you adapted as time & opportunities change/ arise? One of the best things we did was include a retail outlet in our new premises, where visitors can browse and taste our range. There is a viewing window into the kitchen, so you can see the products being made, and small group tours are also available by appointment. As well as our own branded products, we now manufacture for a growing number of farmers, creating products using their own produce. We are proud to have been working with Ricardoes Tomatoes for many years, creating their award winning range of strawberry and tomato products.

Some challenges, accolades and rewards? Despite of (and perhaps a result of) bushfires, floods, and COVID19, people have come out in support of local and regional business, and are taking more interest in where their food actually comes from. As a food producer, this is a really encouraging trend towards regional food security. We are looking forward to this years Sydney Royal and National Food Awards, and have high hopes for our new Truffled Black Garlic Mustard, Truffled Habanero Hot Sauce and Black Garlic Worcestershire. What is your secret to success? If you start with fresh, local ingredients, it’s easy to create great products. Equally important are our relationships with clients, suppliers and staff, which are based on trust, reliability and transparency. What is on the horizon for The Other Chef? We have lots of new projects coming up, as well as exploring new markets outside our region.

BUDGET 2021 OUR PLAN TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF REGIONAL COMMUNITIES Our plan will help boost our economic recovery, create local jobs and keep our local communities safe. We’ve fought hard to secure extra support for regional Australians in this Budget because we know that now is the time to create jobs, stimulate growth and provide a better quality of life for people in the regions. We know that more and more Australians are moving to regional Australia and that is why we are investing record amounts in local infrastructure to keep up.

DELIVERING LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE The Liberal and Nationals Government is continuing its record investment in infrastructure, especially in regional Australia. Our 10-year, $110 billion infrastructure pipeline will see a boom in regional construction – sealing roads and improving safety for freight and families with $1 billion for the Road Safety Program. The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program saw 23 projects across the Hastings and Camden Haven receive over $5 million to build vital community infrastructure, but we’re going further. We’re delivering a further round, with an additional $3.6 million to fund further priority projects throughout our towns and villages delivering additional jobs and investment. And we’re delivering round 6 of the Building Better Regions Fund, which has previously seen 9 projects supported throughout the Lyne electorate previously, funding shovel-ready infrastructure projects up to the value of $10 million.

MORE AGED CARE FOR REGIONS Ageing Australians who live in regional areas deserve aged care nearer to their loved ones. That’s why a further $17.7 billion is being committed to significantly improve the aged care system. This includes another 80,000 new home care packages (bringing the total to 275,000). It also includes supporting 33,000 new training places for personal carers, higher payments for residential care, upgrading care in regional areas and stronger regulation and $630.2m to improve access to quality aged care services for regional Australians.

SUPPORTING CHILDCARE The Government will increase the Childcare Subsidy for families with more than one child up to five in childcare. This will benefit around 250,000 families. The Government will also remove the $10,560 cap on the Childcare Subsidy.

CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS

KATE WOOD-FOYE

FROM CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY

A

lly Bowden is passionate about inspiring and supporting young people to pursue their dreams through taking away the anxiety around higher education. As the new School Outreach Officer for Future Moves at the Port Macquarie Campus and a current student herself, she is looking forward to connecting with young people across the Mid North Coast and helping them see just how unlimited their dreams and futures can be. Ally you joined the Charles Sturt team early last year and have some big plans to get into our schools to connect with young people in our region 2021. Can you tell us about the Future Moves program and what it aims to do? Future Moves is an awareness and aspiration building program that aims to increase confidence within school students around higher education and careers whilst providing meaningful engagement with our local communities. Our primary focus is to increase the participation of underrepresented students in higher education. Our equity funding aims to improve barriers that may exist for students who are regional, remote, First Nations or from a low socioeconomic background. Future Moves centres around awareness, aspiration, and access by promoting school students to gain knowledge around higher education and careers. We do this by going into schools and facilitating fun and engaging

88 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

focus

workshops with students from kindergarten through to their final years of high school. We also host on campus events for our partner schools, facilitated with current university students and our academic staff. Can you share with us some of the fun and interactive initiatives you, Brad and team have in store for young people to connect with the possibility of higher education? We are planning some awesome events at our campus this year! Including Check It Out! days where Year 6 students from our partner schools visit the campus and participate in hands on, fun activities with academic staff. The students finish the day with a graduation ceremony and get dressed up in caps and gowns for the iconic “hat throw” moment. We are also hosting Future Directions Days for Year 9 students from our partner schools. These events are a great opportunity for students to see different learning environments with workshops in paramedicine, radiography and graphic design to name a few. Many students have no idea what to expect when visiting a university, so this is a fantastic opportunity to facilitate activities that current university students are a part of. We see a huge increase the student’s confidence as a result of these events. Why is this program so important for community and our young people? Future Moves tackles many misconceptions and addresses stigma school students often associated with higher education.

A common question we receive is “What if I am not smart enough to go to uni?” We want to ensure that every student with an interest in attending higher education feels confident and receives support in navigating these decisions. Seeing students confidence increase throughout our program is incredible and to go on and see young people aspiring to achieve great things in their future study and careers is the icing on the cake! What are you most looking forward to? Connecting with more students - I really love working with regional and remote communities and hope to reach as many students as possible. It is really cool to run into students on campus from our partner schools who experienced the program and are now attending Charles Sturt University and loving it. If you had one piece of advice for young people who were nervous about jumping into university what would it be? University is a place for you! Speaking from personal experience - If you have an interest in attending higher education - GO FOR IT! Don’t let self-doubt or imposter syndrome hold you back - this is a space for you. Thanks Ally. www.futuremoves.edu.au

1 Million Women is now a global movement of women who are leading change in their own lives and inspiring those around them. Natalie Isaacs heads up the movement, and this June, Port Macquarie will play host and hear her story.

H

i Natalie. You’ll be stopping by Port Macquarie this June, sharing the story of the 1 Million Women movement and talking about your fight against food waste. Tell us more. As the founder of 1 Million Women, I’ve been lucky to travel all over the world talking with people about how we can change the way we live to protect the planet. I’m so excited to be coming to Port Macquarie for an event on Thursday 24 June to discuss the easy changes we can all make to have a big impact on the health of our environment. I’ve teamed up with the Hastings Business Women’s Network, MidWaste and the NSW Government’s Love Food Hate Waste program to empower women (and men!) to change the way we think about our earth’s resources and make positive changes in our own homes. 1 Million Women now is a global movement of women who are leading change in their 92 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

own lives and inspiring those around them. I’m looking forward to connecting with more women in the Port Macquarie community and chatting about what we can all do to tackle climate change locally and globally. We’re bringing together business owners, community leaders, volunteers, mums and dads – everyone has a voice in this conversation and a role to play in creating lasting change for future generations. What started the 1MW initiative and how has it grown since the early days? A little over a decade ago, my lifestyle was very different. I was a cosmetics manufacturer and I thought climate change was someone else’s problem. But I had an epiphany and I changed. Ultimately the thing that actually changed me forever was I got our household electricity consumption down by 20% and when I saw that I had saved a heap of money and carbon pollution at the same time I realised I was powerful. At that very moment I took ownership of the issue. I realised every single thing we do shapes the kind of world we want to live in. I realised

that as individuals and as a collective we are incredibly powerful. That’s what led me to start 1 Million Women a few years later with the help of many incredible women and men. I left behind the over-packaged world of skincare and beauty products, and began building a global movement of women and girls. My vision was to empower women everywhere to act on climate change through everything we do. The world needs a lifestyle revolution. How we live each day matters. One small action at a time multiplied by millions and millions changes the system. How many women are a part of the movement? How has 1 Million Women expanded? Launched in 2009, 1 Million Women is now a movement of over 970,000+ women and girls (and growing every day). We have really grown over the years and are constantly doing new campaigns and projects. Last year we launched our new App for climate action and now have a LoveEarth marketplace showcasing the brands and services doing good

The world needs a lifestyle revolution. How we live each day matters. One small action at a time multiplied by millions and millions changes the system

for the planet. Tell us about the Love Food Communities project and why you’ve stepped up in the fight against food waste? Cutting food waste is one of the easiest and most powerful things we can all do to fight climate change. If food waste were a country, it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases behind the US and China. In NSW, more than a third of the waste we send to landfill is food. In fact, 1 in 5 shopping bags of food ends up in the bin. What a waste! When we throw food away, we’re also wasting the valuable resources that went into growing, producing, transporting, storing and selling the food as well. I’ve partnered with the NSW Government’s Love Food Hate Waste program and MidWaste here on the Mid North Coast to inspire women to lead the charge to try and change all that. How can we all save money and the environment by cutting food waste at home? The good news is that we can all be part of the solution. By signing up for the FREE online Food Smart program, you’ll receive advice, tips and information to help you save both food and

money. The program steps you and your household through six easy steps: 1. Know your waste Work out how much food you’re throwing away. Challenge your family to follow the Food Smart program then measure again at the end to see how much you’ve saved! 2. Plan your meals Life is easier when you know what’s for dinner and you’ve got all the ingredients you need. Don’t forget to make the most of the food you already have. 3. Smart shopping Write a shopping list to match your meal plan – and stick to it. It’s not a bargain if it ends up in the bin. Support your local growers by buying local, in-season produce. 4. Perfect portions Cooking and serving the right amount of food is one of the best ways to save money and reduce food waste. Follow the recipe or portion guides on packaging. 5. Keep it fresh! Storing food correctly will keep it fresher, tastier and more nutritious for longer. Oxygen, moisture and heat are the main reasons food goes off. 6. Love your leftovers

Sometimes we can’t avoid leftover ingredients or extra portions. They can be lunch tomorrow or dinner next week. Label leftovers so they won’t get lost in the back of the freezer. Your new book ‘Every woman’s guide to saving the planet’ shares your journey from climate bystander to international campaigner. What can we expect from the read? The book is part memoir, part toolkit. It’s a guide to reducing your carbon footprint and mobilising your community around the biggest issue of our time. With loads of tips, tricks, easy-to-understand infographics and an inspiring can-do message, this book is for every woman who wants to make a difference. How can people come and hear you speak about your passion for the planet? And how can people sign up for Food Smart? Come and chat with me on Thursday 24 June from 5.30pm at the Mercure in Port Macquarie. Book your ticket at hbwn.com.au/events. Be quick as seats are limited. Tickets are $30 and include a drink on arrival and canapes. To save money and the environment, sign up for the free Food Smart program at midwaste. org.au/food-smart This project is a NSW Government Waste Less Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy. BUSINESS

VOICE i MICHAEL MOWLE

PRESIDENT PORT MACQUARIE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The recent Federal budget has been well received and is generally being seen as appropriate for the times in its scale and coverage of many business sectors and social service areas. The Morrison Government has stated that its aim with this budget is to lock in the post COVID economic recovery now well underway with many regions including Port Macquarie experiencing very good business conditions.

S

ome of the budget highlights include tax relief for small and medium businesses with rates dropping to 25% from July 1st 2021 and the continuation of instant asset write-off up to $150,000 in value. This means businesses can re-invest the savings from a lower tax rate into increasing productive capacity or employing more people with confidence that this investment is immediately tax deductible. Other measures include more personal tax cuts for low and middle income earners which will encourage household expenditure and aid the retail sector in its recovery. This lower tax environment for individuals and business is a very deliberate and positive strategy to grow the economy, the government revenue base and thereby reduce debt more quickly. The lack of immigration and international workers has had a significant impact on the labour market, with employers reporting shortages of skilled and professional people across many industry sectors. The recent dip in unemployment to 5.5% seems to be reflective of the tightening labour supply amid a strong economic recovery. Further evidence of the

94 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

focus

labour shortage is that “underemployment” has now dipped to 1% below the pre-pandemic levels, indicating that more people are also getting increased hours to compensate for the lack of available workers. The budget included $2.7Bn over the next four years to fund subsidies to businesses who employ apprentices and trainees. This funding is squarely aimed at addressing the skills shortage across mining, manufacturing and construction industries. Its effectiveness will rely heavily on the availability of willing trainees and uptake by employer groups. Lyne MP, David Gillespie was successful in securing $48m for the Harrington-Coopernook overpass and has also flagged an upgrade to the Oxley Highway interchange at Port Macquarie amongst several others in the vicinity. Ongoing road infrastructure improvements funded from local, state and Federal is critical to continued economic growth as regional business relies heavily on road transport. The post-budget Federal Government announcement of a $600m gas-fired power plant at Kurri Kurri in the Hunter is a welcome initiative that will provide affordable and reliable power supply for NSW business and heavy

industry. This new power generation plant is to replace the capacity that will be lost after the closure of Liddell Power Station and is a very pragmatic transitional approach to ensuring reliable and affordable supply to the grid. To highlight the need for this new gas-fired power station Tomago Aluminium smelter has recently had several forced shut downs due to power price spikes and the need to preserve supply to the rest of NSW. A reduction in reliable base load power supply could ultimately result in the closure of Tomago which is Australia’s largest aluminium smelter employing 950 people. A spokesman for Tomago has said publicly that with the current renewable technology the largest battery in Australia would only run the aluminium plant for 12 minutes which is clearly not viable. For the private sector to be successful governments need to provide a low tax, minimal intervention environment, key policy certainty (the case in point being energy policy) along with funding and delivery of major infrastructure. The budget and recent announcements demonstrates a recognition of this and support for continued business recovery post COVID.

Life changed suddenly with an unexpected and devastating diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease for 39 year old Matt Adkins of King Creek. When life gave The Adkins family lemons, Matt’s wife Bianca, son Banjo and daughter Frankie, got up and got busy making lemonade, determined, despite the challenges ahead, to squeeze the juice out of every last second of life. This beautiful family along with the extended Adkins and Gleeson clans, are on a mission to make every single moment count, raise awareness and find a cure for this debilitating disease currently without a cure. Together they have inspired us all with their courage, positivity, and willingness to share their reality of their journey with all the love, laughter, tears and often brutally honest accounts of how they are navigating their challenging new life. Matt and Bianca have led the way in opening up discussions around this ferocious disease, documenting their incredible journey and founding The Lemonade Crew - inspiring a community to understand and come together to fight MND. #FMND 96 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

M

att & Bianca, you received Matt’s diagnosis in Feb 2020, at age 39. You were living an active life of a young Dad with a hands-on career in construction when this news hit. Prior to Matt’s diagnosis had either of you ever heard of Motor Neurone Disease? M – I had heard of it but didn’t know much about it, only that it was a horrible disease to get. Ironically, I participated in the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ back in 2014, not really knowing the depth of the disease… who would put themselves through that without doing their research... I guess I knew it was a good cause, so I jumped on board. B – I too had heard of it. I knew it was a hideous disease, but I certainly didn’t have a handle on how debilitating it was. I guess the first person that came to mind was Stephen Hawking but to know what we do now, Stephen’s story was exceptional in terms of how long he lived with the disease and what he was able to achieve. How did you all move from those first stages of shock and devastation to the strength and positivity ? B – I think when you have two little children who depend on you, it felt like my role was to show them that no matter what we were faced with we would take it with great gusto. I think I jumped into ‘doing’ mode and I am definitely still there. I always think of the analogy of the air hostess; when she panics you know the plane is going down or you are in big trouble. So I just keep handing out the peanuts and smiling. Keep the good vibrations flowing as best we can. I think it is so important to share your journey with and for others, especially those who may not have the strength we do. Raising awareness has been Matt’s primary goal since being diagnosed, so we have remained really dedicated to that. We genuinely have an incredible life and it’s always been full of adventure. History has also taught us there is such a thing as hope and this is so important, being able to see light amongst all the darkness. 98 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

The moment we got home from Newcastle after I was diagnosed I was greeted with a house full of our closest mates and family, and I knew from that moment we were going to be ok – we had the support around us that we depend on every day.

The kids truly have been nothing short of wonderful; they are very hands on with Matt and happy to share our story as much as we are. I think when you try and hide reality it creates mistrust and uneasiness, and we need things to be as easy as possible. M – This is an emotionally charged question for me. I just think we had to be strong for the kids. We have always been positive and never been one to shy away when the going gets tough – what’s the good in feeling sorry for yourself. We just make the absolute most of every opportunity and experience. Bianca, this year you left work to care for Matt full time and through your Lemonade Yarns on social media, you have beautifully shared the raw, uplifting, heartbreaking and often hilarious accounts across your family’s MND journey. So many of us found ourselves laughing out loud with you and crying at the frustration and unfairness of it all. But most of all, feeling the incredible strength and love you have for Matty and each other and just how much you are loved and admired by your family and friends. You have truly opened our community’s eyes to the existence and reality of this disease –

A MOMENT

i he

MAYOR i PETA PINSON

Mayor of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council

I

’ve attended community flood recovery meetings across our region and heard many stories of heartbreak and resilience. Our community was quick to act and support each other during the crisis, from offering shelter to friends and family who lost everything, to cleaning the mud out of homes and businesses, or donating goods to charities. As someone who helped load flood rubbish onto trucks in the clean-up, I was so proud of the huge number of people knocking on doors and helping too. The spirit of our community is amazing. Our Council acted early in the emergency too. We set up flood recovery outreach centres within days of the floodwater subsiding and have

worked with government and agencies to bring help to our Local Government Area. I was fortunate to fly over the region in a Black Hawk helicopter when the Australian Defence Force was here. It was heartbreaking to see the damage from the sky – our land is very scarred. It will take years before our homes, roads, parks and the environment can get back to what they were before the flood, but we’re in for the long haul. I will be working with our CEO Dr Clare Allen and senior Council staff to form disaster recovery plans so that we can be better prepared in the future. Every community is unique and needs their own plan too. We need to listen to the residents, particularly the people who have the knowledge of past experiences.

While there were significant problems in getting people evacuated or warned about what was to come, no-one predicted the high level of floodwater we would experience. Right up until the water was lapping at the door, the weather bureau and emergency services were predicting moderate, not severe, levels. There are still plenty of people in need of goods and assistance. I encourage residents to go to the GIVIT website (www.givit.org.au) to see what is needed and, if you can, make a donation. Blaze Aid is also seeking supplies and volunteers to help rebuild fencing lost on our farms – for more information visit www. blazeaid.com.au. We will rebuild and repair. We’re all in this together.

In just over four years, Hem Rentals has become one of Port’s most respected Property Management teams, with a reputation for great service.

T

ell us about the HEM Rental journey. HEM Rentals is something we are hugely proud of. We have a great team, who love what they do and work to a structure that has exceeded all of our expectations. When we set out, our goal was to change the way property management is done and provide a new level of service that works for both landlords and tenants. We wanted to avoid the usual complaints from landlords, that they only hear from their real estate agent when there is a drama. We offer a low property manager to property ratio, so our team know every property and person involved intimately. This enables us to provide a more personal service and with our strict tenant selection process and regular communication, we are able to avoid or at least overcome most of the usual problems better. Property management can be tough. How

do you maintain such a good reputation? It comes down to our team culture, people and philosophy of treating everyone in the way we would like to be treated ourselves. It’s not simply about finding a tenant and collecting rent. It is about creating long term relationships and going the extra mile. Our dedicated, highly skilled team don’t just see it as a job. They take ownership and pride in what they do, focusing on the people behind the tasks they perform. By getting this right, our clients know that we care and do everything to look after their property effectively.

YOU DON’T NEED THE BEST PROPERTY MANAGER. UNTIL YOU DO. At HEM, we look after your property with the same care and dedication, as if it were our own. We offer a personalised one-on-one service, with a low property manager to property ratio, so we know your property and tenant intimately. So, if the unexpected should occur, you'll have total peace of mind knowing you have the best team taking care of it.

We take the stress out of owning an investment and this truly sets us apart. What advice would you give to someone looking for a property manager? It’s like anything in life, you get what you pay for. You wouldn’t go to the cheapest surgeon and expect the best result. It’s the same in real estate. Whilst others try to lure you in with special deals, we offer a straightforward, cost-effective service that works for you and allows our team to effectively manage your property. The result is that we have low vacancy rates, low rent arrears and happy clients!

Being a real estate agent is more about people than a property. This is the main reason I come to work every day. In my job, I have the absolute privilege of being part of a special moment in people’s lives. It’s such a beautiful feeling to see the smile on your client’s face – there is absolutely no better feeling. How have you adapted as time / technology changes? Our industry is ever changing however I think over the last 3-5 years we have seen huge advances. With these advances agents have had to embrace technology – if they don’t, they will become extinct. Technology has been a game-changer in our industry – we have seen the introduction of video, live social media, drones and the list goes on. Although these tools have been readily available, some agents have decided not to buy in. I have always had the belief that we must continue to learn to be relevant in our industry – this aspect is just not negotiable. What have been some of your challenges, accolades and rewards? There’s many challenges in our industry and the main one is finding that balance between work and your personal life. I have a fantastic family that supports me 200% and without that support there is absolutely no way you can perform at your maximum. Trophies and industry recognition are nice but the testimonials and referrals from past clients are the best reward an agent can ever obtain. Katie Rawlinson is now working alongside me exclusively and she manages my administration and buyer management which allows us, as a team, to provide the ultimate service for our clients. She is an absolute champion – proud to have her on Team Plews. What is the secret to your success? This is the easiest question so far! I think it’s a combination of a number of factors – integrity, hard work, a willingness to learn and to be different. I have had some excellent people/mentors in my life but no bigger than my parents. They had a small business called the Bamboo in Clarence Street many years ago. They worked bloody hard and their business dealings were all done by doing what was right. As a kid I didn’t realise the learnings I gained from them – and I am so grateful for that. Do you have a motto that you work/live by? Nothing will work – unless you do.

David and Tahney Luck are the owners of Solahart Port Macquarie. RECENT WINNERS OF A NATIONAL AWARD PRESENTED BY SOLAHART AUSTRALIA, THIS FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED COMPANY are with you from start to finish and beyond. This amazing local business should be your first choice when it comes to Solar.

We have been busy busy with loads of installs of PV and SWH whilst also employing some new staff. This year we were lucky enough to win a National Solahart award for Sales of Solar Power which was huge. We have also been busy in the sporting side of things with David’s rowing for Wauchope Bonny Hills and recently competing at the Aussie Titles at the Sunshine Coast in April. What must customers think about when choosing which solar company to entrust? There are so many in the market at the moment and most of them are out of town or state companies. Trust the sales person who is selling you the products. Personalised and customised in-home appointments to ensure you are getting what you need and want rather than what the sales person wants for you. QUALITY – I cannot stress this part enough. So many companies will say they have the BEST products but you will know what to believe and not with your relationship with the sales person. WARRANTY – Solahart is a company that has been around for over 60 years. Not only do they pride themselves in quality products, they offer Solahart Warranties on

the product they sell not warranties from the systems we sell. We get so many warranty calls from customers saying “that company is no longer around” or “they cant get anyone in the area to help”. LOCAL – you can’t go past your local solar companies. They are the ones that will be there in the long run for any after sales services you need. PRICE – it’s the old saying really. “You get what you pay for”! There are so many options when it comes to solar installations. Can you tell us about the most popular? The most popular by far has been the 6.6kw Solar Power systems and our highline 302L for Hotwater. The 6.6kw generally gives most standard households the ability to cover their daytime

usage and also allowing to send some back to the grid (Essential Energy Export limit dependant) to enable solar customers to get a bit of credit back on their bills. Our SHW 302L system works brilliantly to also reduce your power and gas usage which also reduces your bills. These systems are all on your roof and out of the way and speaking from someone who loves loooong hot showers (also my children), we hardly ever run out of hot water!! It’s a big decision, not to mention a big investment, for people to make. What are the main benefits of having solar installed? With our current electricity prices on the rise, if customers can get the right size systems for their needs this should endeavour to pay the system back within 5 years and savings on your electricity bills. Also not to forget reducing our carbon emissions which is great for our environment. Saving you and the environment all at the same time!

focus_interview MICHAEL AND DIANNE PAGE

CARPETONE From humble beginnings Michael and Dianne Page have grown their floor covering business in Port Macquarie. With retirement on the horizon, Michael hands over to his Daughter Kelly & her Husband Mic to continue the family-owned local business.

H

i Michael and Di, congratulations on your upcoming retirement! Can you tell us where you first started out in the carpet business? Our history with the business dates back 21 years to May 2000 when I worked for Bayden and Patricia Cullen at Cullens Carpet One & Verticals in Lake Road. I started in sales and quickly became Store Manager working alongside some very experienced people who were instrumental in training me. In this industry you never stop learning with new products and procedures. I quickly realised there were plenty of builders and gained their confidence and work that continues to this day.A small name change to Cullens Carpet One & Blinds hinted at the success that was to follow with the business rapidly gaining a foothold in Port Macquarie and surrounding areas. In July 2002 we bought the business from Bayden and Pat and continued to grow year on year, quickly establishing ourselves as a destination for Floorcoverings and Blinds, Awnings and Shutters. A major refit gave the business much-needed warehouse space, allowing further growth to the point that we required a move to bigger premises as the volume of builders, insurance and general Mum and Dad work exceeded showroom capacity. As the business grew, you moved into a bigger showroom and expanded with the

most recent move to a huge 442sqm place on Lake Road - tell us about this growth. October 2011 saw a big move after Bob Lynch walked into the old shop as a customer, and a conversation with Michael resulted in leasing of 199 Lake Road, with a full NEW store fitout. The biggest difference was moving from a 144sqm showroom to 442sqm plus warehouse space. The new shop allowed for more staff at a time when we were doing more builders work as well as the Mum and Dad type work. We are a true family business with Dianne’s daughter, Melissa, working for us from 2002 until 2015, Kelly starting in 2003 and her now husband Mic commencing in 2006. Staff and the business have received several Business and Customer Care awards - the customer is really the big winner. Kelly and Mic will be taking over the family business after running it for the last several years. Sounds like it will be in very good hands! In recent years the name changed to Port Macquarie Carpet One Floor & Home. During this time Mic and Kelly were starting to run the business. This allowed us time to enjoy life together. Mic and Kelly's time in the business is a massive help to them taking over and making it theirs. Their wealth of experience will mean future and repeat customers are well catered for. What have been your fondest memories of working in this business? Michael has been a Director of Carpet One Australasia since 2008

and will continue in this role. During our time in the industry we have made enduring friendships with many company owners and representatives. The business has helped out on many community projects and individually supported many families during times of need - and this service will continue with Mic and Kelly. Working alongside family definitely has its challenges, but it has also been rewarding watching them growth into the individuals that they have become over the years. We also got to know many locals initially as customers with lifelong friendships formed. These memories will stay with us for life. What plans do you have to keep busy during your free time? Retirement plans were thrown into disarray by Covid-19, but we still hope to travel locally and internationally when borders open, as well as spending time with family and friends, and finishing projects around the home. Michael will continue his Trek 4 Kidz fundraising, Car Rally commitments, Boat Racing events, and continue to organise the Carpetbaggers golf day. No doubt you have a many people to thank - would like to make any special mentions? We would firstly like to thank our family and friends, and the many Customers, Builders, current and past Staff, Company Representatives, and Carpet One Head Office for their ongoing support and friendship. We will still be involved in the community for many years to come. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

R O R Y C O O K E Rory Cooke and his team were inspired to give back to the local community after seeing the effects that the recent floods had on people and their homes. For the entire month of May, Rory donated 50% of his total revenue to Aussie Battlers; a not-for-profit organisation that helps those in need within the Hastings Community. Rory and his team worked endless hours to support this organisation and he tells us about his busy month and how it played out.

R

ory you have had a massive month tell us what has been going on. It has been an amazing, busy and heartbreaking month. When the floods ended, we were attending people's homes to help clean the external parts of their homes and finding that many people did not have insurance to cover the damage. This inspired us to do something more and give back. After seeing the damage that was done you decided to run a promotion to donate 50% of your total revenue to help flood families via Aussie Battlers Pay it Forward. How quickly did your books fill up to support this cause? As soon as we started to market the promotion, we had an influx of bookings. We advertised around the 15th of April and by the 1st of May we were fully booked!
