BIOHACKING
YOUR HEALTH WITH HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY
Imagine a treatment so simple, you just sit back, relax, and breathe deeply — yet so powerful, almost everyone can benefit. That’s what awaits you at Kado Wellness Recovery Centre with our cutting-edge Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. It’s not just for elite athletes or those in recovery — whether you’re seeking greater mental clarity, faster healing, a stronger immune system, or enhanced longevity, HBOT is the ultimate biohack for modern wellbeing. Under higher atmospheric pressure, your body absorbs significantly more oxygen than it can in normal air. This oxygen dissolves directly into your plasma, reaching even the most oxygen-deprived tissues. The result is accelerated healing, reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and enhanced cellular repair throughout the body.
WHAT TO EXPECT OVER TIME
AFTER 10 SESSIONS
Many people start to feel a renewed sense of energy and motivation. Sleep becomes more restful, and the mind feels clearer. That heavy brain fog lifts, focus improves, and mood feels steadier as the body and mind begin to reset and recharge.
Physically, you may notice faster muscle recovery, less soreness, and improved circulation and mobility — perfect for those balancing busy work, training, or family life.
AFTER 20 SESSIONS
The deeper changes start to show. Cognitive performance continues to strengthen, and many describe feeling more mentally alert and emotionally balanced, with greater clarity under stress.
Physically, chronic inflammation starts to settle, skin texture and wound healing improve, and stamina increases. You may notice you’re not just recovering faster, you’re performing better, sleeping deeper, and thinking clearer.
AFTER 40 + SESSIONS
This is where the true biohacking begins. Sustained oxygen exposure supports neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections — which may enhance memory, focus, and long-term cognitive health. Mitochondrial efficiency (your body’s energy engine) improves, often leading to enduring energy and resilience.
Many regular users report better emotional regulation, fewer “off” days, and an overall sense of balance — both physically and mentally.
COMFORT MEETS CALM
Unlike other chambers, Kado’s Infinity Pod offers a completely comfortable experience. You’ll sit upright in a reclining chair with air conditioning and plenty of space. A glass door means you can always see out — ideal for those who feel claustrophobic in enclosed spaces. It’s peaceful, restorative, and designed to help you relax as your body heals itself.
• Non-invasive & gentle: No injections, no surgery — just pure oxygen.
• Accessible for many: While there are certain medical contraindications, for the majority of people it’s safe and well tolerated.
• A real biohack: Think of HBOT as a tool to amplify your natural repair systems, energy, and resilience.
• Progressive investment: The more HBOT sessions you invest in, the deeper your physiological gains.
WHO CAN BENEFIT?
Literally almost everybody, from those wanting faster recovery, to individuals managing chronic inflammation or low energy, to people seeking to biohack longevity. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a gentle, powerful way to amplify your body’s innate healing!

ow did you first discover hypnosis, and what drew you to it?
I actually discovered hypnosis in the most unexpected way, when I went to quit smoking! I remember sitting there thinking, “This isn’t working… what a waste of time.” Then I walked out, and I never touched a cigarette again. Not once. That blew my mind! I needed to know what this magic was that made letting go of an addiction feel so effortless. From that very first session, I was completely obsessed with hypnosis, I wanted to understand it, master it, and eventually share it with the world. Now, I get to help others experience that same kind of freedom, and that’s the real addiction I never plan to quit. You’re a hypnotherapist by day, and comedy hypnotist by night! What inspired you to bring hypnosis to the stage in such a fun, light-hearted way?
excuse to make people dance like Beyoncé and forget the number 7!
How do you balance the entertaining side of hypnosis with the deeply transformative work you do in therapy sessions?
For me, it’s all about intention. On stage, my intention is joy - creating connection, laughter, and wonder. In my therapy sessions, the intention is transformationhelping people release old patterns, trauma, and fears so they can live fully. But at the core, both worlds are about the same thing: helping people let go. Whether that’s letting go of stress in a session or letting go of inhibitions on stage, the outcome is freedom, and a few giggles along the way.
For me, it’s all about intention. On stage, my intention is joy - creating connection, laughter and wonder. In my therapy sessions, the intention is transformation...
I believe healing and laughter come from the same place, the heart. After years of helping people transform their lives through therapy, I wanted to show the world that hypnosis isn’t something mysterious or scary. It’s actually fun, safe, and deeply human. Bringing hypnosis to the stage allows me to educate through laughter; people walk away entertained, but also amazed by what the mind can do. Plus, it’s a pretty great
For those who’ve never seen a comedy hypnosis show, what can they expect from one of your performances?
Expect to laugh until your cheeks hurt! My shows are clean, classy, and wildly funny.. full of unexpected moments, spontaneous laughter, and a whole lot of heart. The volunteers choose to come up on stage (no one is ever forced!), and once they’re there, I simply guide them into a relaxed hypnotic state… and then the magic begins. One minute someone’s convinced they’re a famous singer, the next they’ve forgotten their own name! It’s a rollercoaster of hilarity that shows just how powerful, playful, and downright fascinating the human mind can be. Continued over...
What do you love most about watching volunteers let go and become the stars of the show? Have there been any particularly memorable or hilarious moments from your shows that stand out?
I love watching people surprise themselves! The moment someone realises they just did something completely out of character, and loved it, is priceless. What makes it even better is knowing that every single volunteer chooses to be there. They’re brave enough to step up, let go, and trust the process, and that’s where the true magic happens.
As for memorable moments… oh, there are plenty!
experience every day. You know when you drive somewhere and can’t remember the last ten minutes? Or get lost in a movie and forget you’re in a cinema? That’s hypnosis! It’s not mind control; it’s mind freedom.
And yes, most people can be hypnotised, as long as they want to be. The best hypnotic subjects are imaginative, open-minded, and willing to play along. So if you can daydream… you can be hypnotised!
What’s one common misconception about hypnosis that you’d love to clear up once
As a hypnotherapist, you help people overcome anxiety, fears, and limiting beliefs. What kinds of transformations have you witnessed through your work?
I’ve seen are when people finally realize they’re not broken, they’ve just been believing old stories. I’ve watched clients go from crippling anxiety to calm confidence, from deep grief to peace, from self-doubt to unstoppable purpose.
One guy once gave birth to a baby during a show (a beach ball, thankfully), and another swore he had three feet and eleven fingers. Every show is unique, unscripted, and absolutely unforgettable, even if the volunteers sometimes forget what happened!
Some of the most beautiful transformations I’ve seen are when people finally realise they’re not broken, they’ve just been believing old stories. I’ve watched clients go from crippling anxiety to calm confidence, from deep grief to peace, from selfdoubt to unstoppable purpose. It’s honestly sacred work. The tears, the breakthroughs, the “I finally feel free” moments; those are what keep me doing what I do. Every single person has the power to heal; I just help them find the switch.
Many people are still unsure what hypnosis really is. How do you explain it to someone new or skeptical? Can anyone be hypnotised, or are some people more responsive than others?
I explain hypnosis as a natural state of focused attention, something we all
and for all? and habits. You’re fully aware, just deeply
That you “lose control.” The truth is the opposite, hypnosis actually helps you gain control over your thoughts, emotions, and habits. You’re fully aware, just deeply relaxed and open to positive suggestions. I always say: no one can make you cluck like a chicken unless you want to.. but if you do, we’ll make it fabulous!

Bryan Brown, decorated film star, celebrated storyteller, and ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST RECOGNISABLE FACES, IS HEADING TO COFFS HARBOUR THIS NOVEMBER for an intimate evening of conversation about his latest novel, The Hidden.
he Academy Awardnominated actor, known for his iconic roles in Breaker Morant, The Thorn Birds, Two Hands, and Boy Swallows Universe, will appear as a special guest at Yarrila Place on Tuesday, 18 November (6–7.30pm).
The event marks a rare opportunity for local audiences to hear firsthand from one of Australia’s great screen and literary talents as he discusses his creative process, his journey from the big screen to the page, and the stories that continue to shape his career.
While Brown remains one of the nation’s most enduring screen presences, his recent foray into writing has revealed another creative dimension. A proud Macksville local and beef cattle farmer, Brown has built a reputation not only as an actor but now as a formidable crime author, blending his signature dry wit and deep understanding of human nature with stories that cut to the heart of Australian life.
Following the release of his first collection, Sweet Jimmy (2021), and his debut novel The Drowning (2023), Brown’s latest work The Hidden has already generated excitement among fans and critics alike.
Set in a fictional North Coast town called “The Heads,” The Hidden unfolds across a backdrop of coastal secrets, local crime, and shifting loyalties. It’s a taut, character-driven mystery that captures the rhythms and tensions of small-town Australia, where everyone knows each other, but no one knows everything.
Publisher Allen & Unwin describes the story as follows:
“The Heads was once a small village
on the NSW North Coast. Now it’s a large village with a lot of action below the surface. A shipment of coke, a crime squad investigation, and a drug overdose keep the local sergeant pretty busy. Someone is preying on the women of The Heads. And what does the discovery of buried roosters in the forest mean to a young boy?”
Coffs Mayor Nikki Williams said securing Bryan Brown for this event was a significant cultural win for the region.
“This is a major coup for the city’s library service to host such a highprofile author for an evening of conversation and creativity,” Mayor Williams said.
“Bryan Brown has worked alongside legends such as Paul McCartney, Sigourney Weaver, Tom Cruise and Dudley Moore. He’s an elite performer and now an accomplished author, and to have him here, sharing his insights in such an intimate setting, is truly special.”
process, the stories that drive him, and his reflections on storytelling, both on screen and on the page. Whether you’re already a fan or discovering his novels for the first time, this will be an evening not to be missed.”

Bryan Brown’s characters, whether onscreen or in print, are often complex, rugged, and unpretentious. They reflect an Australia that feels familiar: the small towns, the moral grey zones, the humour in hardship, and the quiet strength of ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances. Brown’s success as a writer has been built on that same authenticity. His dialogue crackles with life, his characters are flawed but human, and his sense of place feels grounded in the coastal and country landscapes he knows best.
Acting Director of City Planning and Communities Ian Fitzgibbon agreed, describing the event as a chance to connect with one of Australia’s most authentic creative voices.
“Brown is reputedly one of the sharpest minds in the arts industry, and also laconically grounded, which is so Australian,” he said.

“I write what I know,” Brown has said in past interviews. “I’ve met a lot of characters in my life, some good, some not so good, and I’ve always been fascinated by what drives people. That’s what keeps me writing.”

Today we’re cha ing with Andrew Davis (Event Coordinator), Noelene Skinner and Htun Htun Oo (Steering Commi ee members) FROM ALL ONE UNDER THE SUN FESTIVAL 2025, A VIBRANT COMMUNITY CELEBRATION IN COFFS HARBOUR THAT BLENDS MUSIC, DANCE, FOOD, CREATIVITY AND CULTURE in a powerful showcase of unity and belonging.
Can you give us an overview of All One Under the Sun? What’s the main purpose of the event?
It’s a joyful, grassroots festival that celebrates everyone’s journey to calling the Coffs Coast home - from Gumbaynggirr community at the heart through waves of migration ever since. Through celebrating and sharing culture and creativity, it creates a space where people from all backgrounds feel welcome, connected and proud to belong.
How did the idea for the event come about, and how has it evolved? With its roots in Coffs first Harmony Day event back in 2006, and continuous momentum built through dynamic community-driven events and projects ever since, All One Under the Sun Festival emerged in 2022. Valued for its warmth, excitement, and authenticity, it has quickly established itself as one of the region’s most loved events.
What can people expect this year? This year’s event will be bursting with colour, flavour and creativity. There’ll be live music, cultural showcases, hands-on workshops, food tastings, art and nature play. As the sun sets, expect a twilight glow-up: huge lantern and drum parade and a high-energy live music finale and glow party. Amazing headliners include Shane Howard, Bart Willoughby with Jack Thompson, Emma Donovan, Docker River Band, Worlds Collide and more.
What impact do you hope the festival has on the Coffs community? It’s about connection - across
cultures, generations and life experiences. It builds bonds, opens doors, and reminds us that we’re stronger together. For many, it’s a spirit-lift and a reminder of how incredibly blessed we are to live in a place so rich in beautiful humans and natural wonder.
How does the event promote inclusion and harmony? Locals from all walks of life are at the heart of this festival - shaping the program, leading hands-on activities, performing, cooking and sharing culture. With so many authentic ways to connect and get involved, it’s in these simple moments that we uncover common ground, deepen understanding, honour our diversity and build the respect where genuine inclusion and harmony can take root.
What inspires you personally to keep doing this work? Htun: “To show young people how powerful unity is. Our differences make us stronger.”
Noelene: “We’re one big community family. When we work together, everyone shines.”
Andrew: “It’s like a glimpse of a better world – where our smiles do the talking and our hearts connect.”
How can people get involved? Volunteers are always welcome – check the website or Facebook to register. Or just come down, bring your crew, pack a rug, and join the celebration!

SONGS AN D
STORIES TOU R
SHARK
Amy Shark is bringing her acclaimed Songs and Stories tour to C.ex Coffs on Sunday, November 9, offering fans an intimate evening of music, honesty, and connection. Known for her raw lyricism and magnetic stage presence, the multi-ARIA Award winner is stripping things back to where it all began - just her, a guitar, and the stories behind the songs that made her one of Australia’s most loved artists.
my, your Songs and Stories Tour has been such a massive success and has now been extended due to popular demand! How does it feel to be back on the road again for this final run of shows? It feels good. I was really stressed doing this show for the first time, because I just wasn't sure if people would even care to come and see something like this. Having now done that first big run, and with it going so well, I'm really looking forward to this one because I know what I'm doing now and I know what's expected. The first few shows, it was a lot.. I run the whole show. I'm playing every song on acoustic, I’m tuning my own guitars, telling the stories, and it's up to me when the songs start, and what stories I tell. Initially I was really emotionally drained after it because it was so much to think about, but the more I did it the more I relaxed and leant into it, and I think that's what people like about it. The difference of this show is that you come and sit down and enjoy a really intimate, relaxed experience. The fact that it's done so well and people are interested, and keep wanting to come to the show, is awesome; I couldn't ask for a better response. What inspired you to create a more stripped-back, acoustic tour format this time around? A lot of people on my team kept telling me to do an acoustic run of shows and I thought about it more and more. Every song of mine begins on acoustic guitar so it makes sense, they sound really nice stripped back anyway. But it was more the fans telling me that they loved the stories in between, even at the arena shows, and I really listen to what people enjoy. I also just thought how cool it would be to be able to go a bit rogue and not be on such a strict time limit. When you play arenas you have to be on a strict time code because you've got lighting and production and pyro so
to be a really slick show you’ve got to stick to a time code. With this show I can do whatever I want, which is really fun! I guess my strengths are probably being able to tell stories and play acoustic guitar, and that's how I started my career. I did 15 years of just me sitting and playing solo acoustic at every bar and pub around Queensland. I guess it just makes sense to go back to basics and put on a different kind of show.
You’ll soon be performing in Coffs Harbour, and you’ve described these shows as “Songs and Stories”, what can fans expect from the night? You can expect exactly that, it's a really different show. If you're a fan of music in general you will really appreciate it because you'll hear the songs in their rawest form.
they weren't used to that. It was kind of addictive to just get out there and see if I could win over each town, because I know that there's people coming to shows that have either seen me on Australia Idol, or heard one song on the radio, or just heard my name, and they're coming to see what this girl is all about.. I find it fun trying to win people over I guess.
You’ll get to hear lyrics that you may have missed, that might've got lost in the big glossy production and hear some of the stories behind the songs as well.
You’ve made a real effort to tour regional towns, why is that important to you as an artist? I think it's been so hard for regional people over the years to get to see any kind of live music, especially pop. To be a female pop artist, I mean I know they're doing it more now, but I feel like I was one of the first pop artists to take a show out and do a massive regional tour. The first one I did with the band was like 60 dates or something, it was insane. I brought my big Amy Shark sign, I brought all the production and took it into the small towns. I wanted to show them what I had, and it was really special doing that because I could see on their faces that
...that’s how I started my career.. I did 15 years of just me si ing and playing solo acoustic at every bar and pub around Queensland. I guess it just makes sense to go back to basics and put on a different kind of show.
You’ve had such an incredible career; ARIA Awards, countless hits, and soldout tours, when you look back, what moments stand out most for you personally? It's been a really big decade I guess! I think I'm just so lucky that people still care because it was taking a real turn in the industry where people didn't have much patience and were just wanting new things constantly. I think for me to have a strong audience and people that really care about whether I put a song out or not, and who are interested in what I'm doing next is the biggest achievement for me. I think being able to work on new songs, in TV and with a film coming out next year, I'm just so happy that I get to do it all, and that people even want to come to show. I think all of it just plays into a big big beautiful career.
After such a big tour, what’s next for you? Are you already thinking about new music or a different kind of project? I’ve always got stuff going - I've got too much going at the moment! But in regards to my music, I have some really exciting stuff that I can't really get into right now, but you know if you know me I don't usually wait too long before I start putting more music out.
Thanks Amy.
Bonville CREEK FARM
Nestled in the Bonville Valley, Bonville Creek Farm is a family-run labour of love. Jenni and Tom Rivers Smith, with their two daughters, are building a small, sustainable farm, raising Miniature Galloways, Nigerian Dwarf goats, and free-range hens while dreaming up their own creamery and a life rooted in purpose and care.
Hi guys, tell us how Bonville Creek Farm came to be? Have you always had a passion for farming and animals, or was it something that grew over time?
I grew up with horses and studied Animal Science at Montana State University and Tom grew up on a farm, so we both felt at home in wide open spaces surrounded
by natural beauty and animal life. We moved back to Australia 15 years ago with the goal of starting a goat farm with an attached creamery like ones that had inspired us overseas. The cost of property quickly put a dampener on any immediate farming ventures and a slow grind towards our dreams commenced. During this time, we became parents and several years passed as we navigated and enjoyed the early years of raising two wonderful
daughters. Our dream light never stopped flickering in the background and eventually we were able to purchase our farm.
What drew you specifically to breeding Miniature Galloway Cattle and Nigerian Dwarf Goats, two such unique and charming breeds?
My degree focused on breeding cattle via artificial insemination, so we always wanted to have a small stud of quality
JENNI AND TOM RIVERS SMITH
cattle for the smaller acreage market. When choosing a breed, their rare breed status combined with smaller size, calving ease, good temperament, naturally without horns and being non-selective grazers provided us the best herd match for our property. The Nigerian Dwarf goats provide the highest butterfat content of all the goat breeds and produce a milk that is perfect for cheese making. Both breeds are a pleasure to be around, and, in our opinion, just a little on the cute side!
e Nigerian Dwarf Goats provide the highest bu erfat content of all the goat breeds and produce a milk that is perfect for cheese making.
You also produce beautiful free-range eggs, how important is animal welfare and quality of life in everything you do? We care greatly for all animals on our farm. It makes us happy seeing chickens being able to roam around, forage for natural treats, take dust baths and live how a chicken should.
We like that our animals trust us and we take pride in allowing our animals to express their natural behaviour. What does a typical day look like for you and your family on the farm?
There is quite a lot of variation to what needs to be done seasonally, particularly during breeding or kidding season, and a neverending list of projects that need attention. Right now, the baby goats rule the farm and demand bottles three times a day, so we start the day there!
Then the normal routine includes: Milking the goats
Letting the animals out in the morning
Getting our children off to school
Moving fencing to rotate the goats, cows and chickens to new feed areas for the animals’ health and to ensure pastures get rested.

Bonville Creek Farm is truly a family affair, what values do you hope your children learn from growing up on the farm?
As our kids engage with this life, we see that they gain awareness that there will be hard times in life and that it’s ok to fail or stumble now and then.
There is no hiding the reality of life on the farm, there can be sadness when animals get sick or worse and things go wrong. As our kids engage with this life, we see that they gain awareness that there will be hard times in life and that it’s ok to fail or stumble now and then. We hope this will give them resilience and drive not to quit when life is hard, so that they chase their own dreams one day. There also is much joy and wonder to be had. The birthing of new animals, connection to the natural world and beauty of each season. They do farm chores, albeit begrudgingly at times and are developing a good work ethic, and also learning empathy and kindness for the animals they help care for. We just want to see them happy within themselves, happy and fulfilled in their life path and kind and considerate to others.
You’re in the process of expanding your herd of goats for milking and also cheese making. How far along are you in setting
up the dairy and creamery, and what are your goals for this project?
We’ve come a long way in the last couple of years but still have much to do. We now have a quality dairy goat foundation herd that is developing nicely. We have our kidding barn finished, workshop built and our dairy building nearly complete. Power went on last month and a large solar system with batteries gets installed next month. There isn’t a supplier for large scale goat milking equipment in Australia, so equipment is coming from Europe. We just found out yesterday that the 6 month lead time has now blown out to 8 months and it will hopefully arrive by Christmas. We aim to start the dairy first and down the track convert half the building into a creamery for onsite cheese production.
have been great to work with, especially Adam and the team at the Bonville Servo and Kev and his team at Kombu Wholefoods who both approached us initially offering to stock our eggs. What are your hopes for Bonville Creek Farm over the next few years?
Having all the farm infrastructure in place and nice healthy pastures and native areas will be fulfilling. We are working towards carbon neutral certification and hope to achieve that soon.
Do you plan to open the farm to visitors once the creamery is up and running?
If there is sufficient public interest, we would like to do an occasional open farm day where people could come and meet the cows and see the baby goats be fed and play. They could also see the main herd be milked, see cheese making taking place via a viewing window and maybe buy some cheeses to take away or have a picnic in a farm setting.
How has the local community supported your journey so far?
The local community has been amazing. We often get people approach us and let us know how much they enjoy eating our eggs and enjoy seeing our farm develop on social media. Come kidding time, we also get lots of people volunteering to feed the baby goats. Retailers that sell our eggs
The obvious stuff like having all the farm infrastructure in place and nice healthy pastures and native areas will be fulfilling. We are working towards carbon neutral certification and hope to achieve that soon. Beyond that we want to provide a variety of delectable cheeses for wholesale and to contribute to the local economy via agritourism. We also hope to show that small scale regenerative farms can be viable and will continue to hold a place in the food industry providing sustainable, local and healthy delicious food choices for the public. Ultimately, we want our farm to provide a net benefit to the environment whilst producing a product we’re proud of.

COVER DIS H - BAVARIAN PLATTER ( SUITABLE FOR 4 ) PORK
KNUCKLE, SAUSAGE, PORK BELLY, PRETZEL, POTATO SALAD, GRAVY, MUSTARD PICKLED CABBAGE from KING TIDE BREWING
King Tide Brewing sits down a hidden laneway in the heart of Coffs Harbour, but step inside and it feels like a love le er to beer, food and community.
Founded by Josh King and his wife Lucyna, the independently owned brewery blends oldworld brewing cra with a fresh Coffs Coast spirit: housemade beers poured metres from the tanks, a warm open kitchen serving Euro-inspired plates, and a calendar full of community-minded events.
Hi Josh, what inspired you to start King Tide Brewing? It began with a love of great beer. I’d spent years brewing and experimenting with different styles, and what I wanted most was to create a place where people could experience that love firsthand, where beer wasn’t just something you drank, but something you connected with. I was born and raised in Coffs, and after some time in Sydney, I was aching to come home and bring my passion for beer to my hometown. Lucyna and I have poured our heart and soul into creating a venue built on old school hospitality, warm, welcoming, and deeply tied to the community.
What’s the philosophy behind your beers?
At King Tide, we brew a broad range of traditional, modern, European and
sessionable styles. Our approach draws on old-world brewing traditions while embracing the creativity of modern craft beer. We also take inspiration from our local area, like our Coffs Coast Pale Ale, Banana Republic Wheat Beer, and the crowd-favourite Cows with Guns Brown Ale named after the local bike track. Even our Blues and Roots Ginger Beer is flavoured with local blueberries! Every day our goal is simple: to make beer that’s refreshing, delicious, and worth another pint.
Polish upbringing instilled a deep sense of hospitality, and that shows in the warmth of our venue. We’ve been lucky to build a truly amazing team, from the kitchen to front of house, management, and marketing. They’re passionate, skilled, and genuinely care about what King Tide stands for. They’re not just staff, they’re family.
I was born and raised in Coffs, and a er some time in Sydney, I was aching to come home and bring my passion for beer to my hometown.
Tell us about the team at King Tide. My wife and co-founder, Lucyna, is the rock that keeps everything running. Her
King Tide has become known for its food as much as its beer, how did that come about? From day one, we didn’t want to be just a brewery. Great beer deserves great food. We wanted our menu to reflect the same values as our brewing, craft, care, and connection. Inspired by
European beer halls but with a modern coastal twist, our food is hearty, seasonal, and designed to share. From fries for the kids to our famous crispy pork knuckle for two, it’s about creating a space where everyone feels welcome, not only beer lovers. What’s your favourite beer and food pairing right now? That’s always changing, but right now I’d say our Blue Groper Lager with the Smoked Salmon Salad, fresh, crisp, and perfectly balanced. For something heartier, you can’t beat the Banana Republic Weissbier with the pork knuckle, a classic Bavarian pairing. We’ve also curated a small but excellent wine list, all designed to complement our food.
You can see the brewing in action and watch our chefs in the open kitchen. It’s a seamless mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, with beer as fresh as it gets, and no pokies in sight.
What do you think sets King Tide apart from other pubs?
Coming to King Tide is an experience. Hidden down Studio Lane, walk past lush gardens, thanks to my Dad our resident gardener, into a beautifully restored car garage with vintage details and bold murals. You can see the brewing in action and watch our chefs in the open kitchen. It’s a seamless mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, with beer as fresh as it gets, and no pokies in sight. We also run community events like speed dating, pilates, cooking workshops and art shows in our gallery space. It’s a venue for everyone, and that’s something we’re proud of.
Where do you see King Tide Brewing heading in the next few years? We’re focused on sustainable growth, expanding the reach of our brews, like Blues & Roots, while keeping that handcrafted, local feel. We want King Tide to continue being a destination, a place people travel to for great beer, great food, and genuine connection. There’s so much more we want to create here.
Any last words, Josh? Come thirsty and come hungry. Bring your friends and family. Our space is built for long lunches, fun nights out, and community connection. Enjoy thoughtful hospitality, good vibes, and food made to pair perfectly with your beer. Thanks Josh.

Oyster Nam a Co.
With seven generations of oyster farming behind him, Antoine Tessier has brought his family’s legacy from France’s Marennes-Oléron basin to the Nambucca River. At The Nambucca Oyster Company, he’s blending tradition and innovation to cra some of Australia’s finest oysters.
The Tessier family’s oyster farming heritage spans seven generations, can you share a little about your family’s journey from France’s Marennes Oleron basin to the Nambucca River?
I am the seventh generation of oyster farmers in my family. I was born and raised in the Marennes-Oléron basin, one of the oldest oyster-farming regions in France. I learned the trade from my father and grandfather.
After the premature death of my father and the increasingly difficult conditions for oyster farming in France, my wife and I made the hard decision to part with our family business and start a new chapter in Ireland.
We bought and developed an oyster company specialising in half grown oysters. Our sons, Antoine (6 years old) and Paul (2 years old) at the time, grew up surrounded by the family passion. After more than ten beautiful years, we were looking for a new challenge and a better climate.
After several scouting trips, the opportunity to
settle on the Nambucca River became real. The beauty of the Nambucca Valley made us want to put down roots. It's the perfect location, being halfway between Brisbane and Sydney and close to the lively town of Coffs Harbour.
The climate is ideal for a great quality of life, and the reputation of Nambucca River oysters allowed us to see the potential to develop a premium product - a new species for us, the Rock Oyster, native to Australia and especially to New South Wales.
What drew you to the Nambucca region, and how did it feel to bring your family’s legacy to Australian waters?
We wanted to prove to ourselves that we were capable of growing oysters anywhere in the world using our heritage, skills, and experience in a different environment, with new techniques and a different species.
For us, oyster farming is not just a profession. It is a way of life, something deeply rooted in who we are.
What makes the Nambucca River such an ideal environment for growing oysters?
Each river has its own flavour.
Nambucca Oysters feed on highly mineralised water flowing straight down from the mountains, giving them a beautiful and unique taste, a true expression of their merroir.
It is what we like to call 'The Salty Kiss', the taste of the sea, the sun, and the place we now call home.
What’s involved in the day-to-day work of an oyster farmer?
Oyster farming is a full-time profession, and it changes greatly with the seasons. Our long days are divided between work on the river and on land, where the rest of the team is busy culling, grading, washing, preparing orders, maintaining infrastructure, and preparing spat for next year.
Keep in mind that when you eat an oyster, it takes you three seconds, but it takes us three years to grow one.
Oyster farming is both an art and a science, how does the health of the river ecosystem affect oyster quality? What are some other important factors?
Oyster farming requires deep knowledge,
learned day by day in the field and passed down from generation to generation. We are proud to have the chance to pass this know-how on to our two sons. But knowledge alone is not enough, a healthy environment is essential for healthy oysters. Oysters need a quality ecosystem with clean water and rich nutrients to grow well and resist external pressures such as agricultural runoff, housing development and ocean acidification. The oyster farmer is a bit like the guardian of the river. Since our arrival in 2019, we have seen this ecosystem tested many times, with bushfires, floods, and increasing pressure on the river.
We do everything we can to protect it. Oysters are natural filters, purifying the river water. Oyster structures also provide habitats for fish, to the delight of boaters and nature lovers. It is an entire food chain we work to protect. You’ve expanded beyond the farm with your food truck at local markets and events, what inspired you to take oysters on the road and where can we find you? What can visitors expect when they come to one of your markets/events to enjoy oysters fresh from your food truck?
Our job is a passion, and we wanted to share it with others.
The oyster farmer is a bit like the guardian of the river. Since our arrival in 2019, we have seen this ecosystem tested many times, with bushfires, floods, and increasing pressure on the river.
With our trailer, the boys open oysters on demand because freshly opened oysters are the best way to enjoy them. Every Sunday at the Harbourside Market in Coffs Harbour, they bring their enthusiasm and knowledge, offering customers a truly local and fresh experience like no other.
When people taste our oysters, we want them to feel a connection, that gentle, briny touch.
What’s been one of your most memorable moments since launching the Nambucca Oyster Co.?
Since our arrival in 2019, there have been many memorable moments, some difficult, such as fires and floods, which led to great losses, but we prefer to remember the positives, like winning Gold and Champion medals at the Sydney Royal for our oysters. Each award reminds us that hard work, resilience, and passion always pay off.
What’s next for Nambucca Oyster Co.? Any exciting plans or collaborations on the horizon?
We have many ideas for the future. Working as
a family inspires us to develop new projects. We want to expand our presence at events and weddings in our region, develop the sale of fresh and cooked oysters through vending machines, and eventually open our own Oyster Bar, a major step for us.
We also want to share our story through farm tours, showing people the river, our work, and finishing with a delicious tasting.
These plans are driven not only by ambition but by our love for what we do and who we are. Where can we find out more or get in touch?
We are proud to work as a family, and the younger generation looks after our social media, keeping everyone updated about upcoming events. You can find us at

IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT SIZE
great wine cellar isn’t defined by how big it is, it’s defined by what it says about you. It should be an extension of your personality: your travels, your experiences, and your taste. A cellar is a living collection, part time capsule, part memory bank, filled with wines that tell the story of where you’ve been and hint at where your palate might be heading next.
So, what deserves a place on those racks? Start with two of Australia’s most undervalued treasures: Semillon and Riesling. Both are famously long-lived, capable of transforming over a decade or more, and offer extraordinary value compared to many cellar favourites. These wines age gracefully, developing complexity and depth well beyond their modest price tags.
Don’t overlook so-called “lesser” vintages either. It’s easy to judge a region by a single warm or cool season, but variation often brings
character. In milder years, wines can retain vibrant natural acidity, a vital ingredient for longevity in both whites and structured reds.
Speaking of reds, those with firm, drying tannins, that textural grip across the tongue, are the ones to put away. With time, those tannins soften, fruit integrates, and the wine gains balance, savouriness, and soul. If bold, fruit-forward reds are your thing, remember that aging won’t make them fruitier.
If I had to offer one piece of advice? Buy in multiples. Open one young to learn its shape, then revisit every few years to watch it evolve. And when you find a bottle that truly sings, don’t hoard the rest, wine is made to be enjoyed, not idolised.
Your cellar should reflect your story, not someone else’s idea of perfection. Trust your palate, pour generously, and let every bottle remind you why you fell in love with wine in the first place.
Mason Rack
BLUES-ROCK POWERHOUSE FROM THE GOLD COAST
Born in Southport, Queensland, Mason Rack grew up immersed in music. Son of jazz musician Billy Rack, Mason began performing at age six, quickly captivating audiences.
Raised on a diet of jazz, rock, and surfing, he seemed destined for a surfing career until life and a stint in rehab led him back to music as salvation.
Now a powerhouse blues-rock artist, Mason blends gritty vocals, guitar, and Weissenborn lap slide into spellbinding shows. His band thrives in blues, alt-rock, and roots music, bringing raw energy and passion to every stage. Influenced by legends like Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley, Ben Harper, and classic blues masters, Mason’s music combines deep emotion, storytelling, and rhythm.
Known for his high-octane performances, Mason’s shows go beyond music - think drum duels, table-top percussion in the audience, and dynamic visuals. Joined by Canadian drummer Joel “Thunderfoot” Purkess and bassist Ross Prior, the trio delivers a rich, immersive experience.
The Mason Rack Band has shared stages with Jimmy Barnes, Tex Perkins, Xavier Rudd, and more. Festival favourites, they’ve rocked events like Byron Bay Bluesfest, Blues on Broadbeach, Woodford Folk Festival, and toured Canada multiple times.
Rack’s songwriting often springs from heartache,
but today explores life’s deeper threads like resilience, transformation, and fantasy. “The pain helps draw the energy,” Mason says, “but now I also like to write about life, success, and connection.”
With four album releases Night Train, Show Me Yours, Join Hands (featuring award-winning track “Dust”), and Live in Canada the band continues to grow its international reputation. Mason Rack is more than a musician, he’s a showman, storyteller, and survivor. “We love that our music connects generations,” he says. “It’s gritty, it’s real, it’s fun and we guarantee satisfaction.”

When it comes to high-energy, feelgood theatre, few shows capture the fun, heart, and sparkle like Legally Blonde: The Musical. This November 7th - 30th, the Coffs Harbour Musical Comedy Company is bringing Elle Woods’ journey to the Je y Theatre stage, promising a production bursting with colour, creativity, and a plethora of local talent. We caught up with Director Fiona Shaw to find out what makes this iconic musical so special, both for the performers and for everyone lucky enough to see it.
Hi Fiona. Legally Blonde: The Musical is such an iconic show, what made you want to bring this story to the Jetty Theatre stage?
Legally Blonde has always been one of those shows that immediately makes me smileit’s lively, witty, and full of heart. Beyond all the glitz, glamour, and pink sparkles, what really drew me in is how the story challenges assumptions and celebrates confidence, intelligence, and individuality. Elle Woods’ journey is about finding your voice and proving that you can be both ambitious and compassionate, determined yet authentically yourself. Bringing that message to the Jetty Theatre felt like a natural fit for our community. I wanted audiences to leave inspired, entertained, and reminded that embracing who you are is truly powerful. Elle Woods is such an empowering character. What do you think makes her story so timeless and relatable for audiences today?
Elle embodies positivity, resilience, and authenticity - she never pretends to be someone else, even when faced with doubt or judgement. That fearlessness, combined with her kindness and optimism, is what makes her story resonate across generations. She faces
FIONA SHAW
obstacles with determination and humour, showing that strength doesn’t require losing your identity. Today, audiences can relate to her journey because it reflects modern values: that it’s possible to be smart, ambitious, and empathetic simultaneously. Elle reminds us that self-belief can open unexpected doors and that being true to yourself is not just empowering - it’s transformative.
What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of directing Legally Blonde so far?
The most fulfilling part has been watching the cast breathe life into their characters. From the court stenographer, to Whitney, to Emmett, each performer has added layers of humour, personality, and depth that bring the story alive. Witnessing them grow in confidence, take ownership of their roles, and embrace challenges has been an absolute thrill. On top of that, seeing the cast master the choreography - from delicate, emotive sequences to high-energy, playful routines has been especially rewarding. Their commitment, enthusiasm, and joy in every rehearsal creates a vibrant, collaborative environment, and that energy is infectious!
Are there any particular scenes or musical numbers that have been especially fun (or challenging!) to bring to life?
For me, the climactic number, Legally Blonde,
has been both the most challenging and satisfying. It’s an emotional turning pointElle is heartbroken and ready to walk away from Harvard law and I really wanted that moment to resonate with authenticity. The scene requires performers to fully inhabit the vulnerability and intensity of the moment for it to land effectively. Beyond this scene, adapting the choreography to fit the stage and work seamlessly with the set has been an exciting creative challenge. We’ve focused on making it feel intimate and immersive so audiences can experience the action up close, and every beat of the performance is designed to draw them into Elle’s journey.
The Coffs Harbour Musical Comedy Company is known for its community spirit. What has the collaboration process been like with your cast and crew?
From the very beginning, collaboration has been at the heart of this production. As Director, it is essential to me that everyone feels valued and permitted to have creative input. Many of our cast and crew dedicate over ten hours a week for more than fifteen weeks, and I wanted them to feel comfortable sharing ideas about characters, costumes, and scene work. Seeing the creative contributions they bring, whether it’s a nuanced gesture, a costume suggestion, or an alternative blocking idea, is incredibly rewarding. Of course, we

ensure all ideas align with the overall vision of the production, but giving the cast and crew space to experiment has strengthened the show. The shared ownership and enthusiasm are palpable, and that collaborative energy translates beautifully on stage.
How do you see theatre like this inspiring younger audiences, especially those new to musical theatre or performing arts?
Legally Blonde is a vibrant, engaging show, and we have several performers of all ages in this production who are completely new to theatre. Watching them step confidently onto the stage and embrace their roles with individuality and personality is genuinely inspiring. I hope younger audiences see that theatre isn’t exclusive to those with prior experience or formal training - it’s a place where people of all ages can explore, have fun, and express themselves. Shows like this can ignite curiosity, boost self-confidence, and highlight the value of community and teamwork. Seeing how this production encourages new performers to take that first courageous step onto the stage is incredibly rewarding, and I hope it motivates audiences to discover their own creative potential.
What can audiences expect when they come to see Legally Blonde: The Musical?
Audiences can expect a high-energy, uplifting production bursting with humour, emotion,

and unforgettable music. The show is filled with vivid, memorable characters, catchy songs, and lively dance numbers that keep the energy flowing from start to finish. Beyond the spectacle, it’s a story about courage, selfbelief, and challenging assumptions - themes that remain relevant for audiences of all ages. The cast has poured their creativity, enthusiasm, and individuality into every moment, making each performance feel alive and engaging. It’s an experience that’s joyful, inclusive, and guaranteed to leave audiences smiling and inspired by Elle’s journey.

This production promises laughter, energy, and inspiration, showcasing the incredible talent and creativity thriving in Coffs Harbour. From first-time performers to seasoned cast members, everyone contributes to a collective celebration of music, movement, and storytelling. Audiences can look forward to an experience that is not only entertaining but heartfelt, inclusive, and vibrant - a true testament to what community theatre can achieve when passion, collaboration, and creativity come together.

WHERE PETS
Fl Home
Heading away and wondering who will care for your pet like you do? What makes a boarding facility truly feel like a second home? At Coffs Coast Pet Resort, the difference is in the details, personalised care, comfort, and an undeniable love for animals.
Nestled in the lush Bonville countryside just outside Coffs Harbour, this boutique resort has become a trusted homeaway-from-home for pets across the region. Owner Jenine Glenn shares what inspired her to create this special place and what makes it stand out.
What inspired you to start Coffs Coast Pet Resort? I wanted to create a space where pets could feel secure, loved, and happy while their families are away and not just be cared for, but truly valued. Over the years, I’d heard too many stories of pets being left with unreliable house sitters or in basic boarding setups that didn’t meet their emotional or physical needs. My goal was to redefine pet boarding by offering warmth, enrichment, and genuine connection, a place where owners can leave their pets with total peace of mind.
Have you always worked with animals? Absolutely. Animals have always been my life. I’ve bred, shown, and trained dogs for most
of my life, along with working in veterinary nursing. I’m also a life member of the RSPCA and AWLNSW, which has given me a deep understanding of animal welfare, behaviour, and how to help pets thrive in a structured yet nurturing environment.
What’s the most rewarding part of running the resort? Seeing pets return with tails wagging and excited to be here again, that’s everything. Knowing our guests are happy and their owners can travel with confidence makes every long day worthwhile.
What sets CCPR apart from other facilities? We’re a true pet resort, not a kennel. Every guest enjoys spacious, clean accommodation, daily enrichment, and plenty of love from our team. We focus on building relationships both with pets and their people. Describe a typical day. The mornings start with exercise time and breakfast, followed by multiple playtimes or one-on-one cuddles. Daycare pups enjoy social sessions and outdoor adventures, while our boarding guests have fun in the yards. Evenings are all
about wind-down time, gentle music, and cosy bedding.
How has the business evolved? Since taking over in December 2024, we’ve continued extensive renovations to update and extend the facilities, creating a more modern, comfortable, and enriching environment for all guests. Through 2025, we’ve expanded our services even further, introducing new Doggy Daycare zones, farm walks, personalised playtimes, an à la carte menu, and the luxurious Pucci Day Spa. We’ve also added Pocket Pet Suites, upgraded our cattery, and enhanced our grooming and enrichment areas and there’s still more to come including sensory gardens, additional daycare areas, and beautifully renovated suites.
How can people book? Bookings can be made online at coffscoastpetresort.com. au or by calling (02) 6678 0771
At Coffs Coast Pet Resort, every stay is more than a booking , it’s a holiday your pet will love.

Reptile W
SPRING SNAKE SEASON ON THE COFFS COAST
with MATTHEW Mc EWAN
REPTILE SPECIALIST
As temperatures rise on the Coffs Coast, snake activity ramps up across the region. With reptiles emerging from winter brumation, locals are more likely to encounter snakes in their gardens, sheds, or even homes. We spoke with Ma hew McEwan, a reptile specialist from Steve McEwan’s Reptile World, to learn more about what to expect this season.
How does snake behaviour change at this time of year? As the weather warms, snakes start looking for food and mates which means sightings increase from the beginning of Spring to late Summer.
Which species are most often seen around Coffs? There are around 14 species in the Coffs area. The most commonly seen are the Coastal Carpet Python, Common Tree Snake, Brown Tree Snake, Red-bellied Black Snake and Marsh Snakes.
What should people do if they find a snake at home? Keep your distance. Many species look similar, and misidentification is common which can mean a bite from a highly venomous species if you try to touch it. The best thing to do is to call a licensed snake catcher, like myself or my father, Steve. We can often give advice over the phone or safely relocate the snake if needed. What attracts snakes to properties? Things like piles of tin, timber, tiles, or overgrown
gardens create ideal hiding spots. These don’t attract snakes directly, but they attract food sources like rodents, frogs, and lizards, which in turn bring snakes.
How can people make their yards less appealing? Keep things tidy. Trim low foliage, store materials off the ground, and reduce clutter. Making your yard less inviting for snakes’ food sources will make it less attractive to snakes.
What’s a common myth about snakes?
numbers in check and helping to maintain a healthy ecosystem balance.
Making your yard less
inviting for snakes’ food sources will make it less a ractive to snakes.
What should someone do if bitten? It is essential to stay as still as possible. Immediately apply a pressure bandage to the entire bitten limb, starting from the extremities. Stay as still as possible and call Triple Zero (000). Snake venom spreads through the lymphatic system, so keeping still and applying firm pressure slows its movement.
A big one is that snakes react to vibration. They don’t. Their main predators in Australia don’t create vibration, so those “snake repeller” devices that rely on vibration don’t work and can actually make people complacent.
Why are snakes important to the environment? They’re vital for keeping rodent
Any tips for parents or pet owners this season? Keep kids and pets away from snakes and avoid trying to move the animal yourself. Contact us for relocation or advice before taking any action.
What’s the best number for people to call if they are worried and may require your skills? For snake relocation or advice, call 0411 648 562 (Reptile World mobile) or our landline on (02) 6651 5244.
UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONAL DYSREGULATION IN ADULTS
Have you ever felt like your emotions are running the show, like you’re on a rollercoaster you cannot get off? If so, you are not alone. Emotional dysregulation is more common than you might think.
Emotional dysregulation refers to the inability to manage or control emotional responses in a way that aligns with the situation. It is not just about feeling “too much”; it is about feeling out of sync with your emotions and struggling to process them effectively. For example, overreacting to minor inconveniences, like snapping at a loved one over a small mistake, feeling overwhelmed by emotions to the point of shutting down or experiencing rapid mood swings that disrupt relationships or work.
Emotional dysregulation can impact every part of life, relationships, career, and even physical health.
What Does Emotional Dysregulation Look and Feel Like? Behavioural signs may appear as impulsive actions, such as making rash decisions that you later regret. You might have difficulty calming down after an emotional outburst, or there may be avoidance behaviours, such as isolating yourself to escape overwhelming feelings.
Physical symptoms you may feel may be a racing heart, a tight chest, or physical agitation. After an emotional episode, you
may feel exhaustion, as if your body has been through a workout.
Social impact may cause strained relationships due to unpredictable reactions. You may also feel misunderstood or judged, leading to shame or guilt.
Emotional experiences may include frustration, shame, guilt, and fear of losing control.
Why Does Emotional Dysregulation Happen? Some underlying causes may be trauma or adverse childhood experiences that disrupt emotional development, mental health conditions like anxiety and depression or chronic stress or burnout that depletes emotional resilience.
When you are emotionally dysregulated, your brain’s amygdala, responsible for processing emotions, goes into overdrive, while the prefrontal cortex, which helps with rational thinking, takes a backseat.
How to Recognise and Address Emotional Dysregulation. The journey to emotional regulation begins with self-awareness. Recognise patterns in your emotional responses by asking: what situations trigger strong emotional reactions? Or, how do I typically respond? Do I withdraw, lash out, or feel overwhelmed? Are there recurring themes in my emotional experiences?
Practical Tips for Emotional Regulation. When emotions feel overwhelming, pause
with JULIE THOMAS
FROM BEYOND THE SURFACE COUNSELLING
and focus on your breath. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system, calming your body and mind. Naming your emotion helps regulate and process it effectively. For example: Instead of saying, “I’m upset,” try, “I’m feeling frustrated because I feel unheard.” Practice Grounding Techniques, such as observing three things that are a particular colour or shape, three things you can touch, hear, smell and taste. Try progressive muscle relaxation, tense and release each muscle group, starting from your toes upward.
Emotional dysregulation can often feel isolating, but seeking support can provide you with personalised tools to address your unique needs. A safe and non-judgmental environment offers the opportunity to explore your emotions while receiving guidance on developing healthier coping strategies.
Emotional regulation is a skill that takes time, effort, and patience to develop. Celebrate small victories, such as pausing before reacting or successfully naming an emotion. Over time, these small changes may build lasting emotional resilience.
Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

NOW OFFERING BULK BILLING!
Big changes are happening at your local GP Super Clinic — all focused on making healthcare more accessible, more affordable, and more connected to the community. With new ownership at the helm and a renewed commitment to patient-first service, the clinic is entering a promising new chapter.
Big Changes at GP Super Clinic C fs Coa
Who are the new faces leading the GP Super Clinic, and what’s their vision for the future? The clinic is now owned and operated by a group of experienced local doctors who share a common vision: to make quality healthcare more accessible, community-centred, and compassionate. Their focus is on restoring continuity of care, improving patient experience, and ensuring the clinic stands as a trusted cornerstone of health in the Coffs Coast region. What inspired the decision to return to bulk billing? The decision to return to bulk billing came from listening to the community. Many families and individuals have been feeling the pressure of rising living costs, and the new ownership team wanted to remove financial barriers to care. The goal is simple — that everyone can see their GP when they need to,
not just when they can afford to.
How will this affect the way patients access care? From 1 November 2025, the clinic will offer bulk billing for all eligible patients under the national Bulk Billing Incentive Program. This means no out-of-pocket costs for most consultations, making healthcare more affordable and encouraging regular, preventive check-ups.
Please note that Specialist and Allied Health appointments, Iron Infusions, Employment Medicals, Commercial driver’s license,, ECGs, sutures, excisions, skin biopsies, wound care, cryotherapy, ear syringing, and iron infusions are not Bulk Billed.
Will wait times improve under the new management? Yes. A new appointment structure, more nursing support, and a focus on patient flow will help reduce waiting times and improve the overall experience. Reception and administration systems have also been upgraded to ensure phones are answered promptly and appointments run more smoothly.
What changes are coming to the medical team or services offered? Coffs Coast GP Super Clinic is now a true one-stop health hub, offering an extensive range of services including pathology, pharmacy, and soon a chiropractor will join the team. We have allied health professionals including physiotherapists, dietitians, exercise physiologists, free falls prevention physiotherapy classes weekly and diabetes educators.
New to the clinic is our Iron Infusion Lounge, providing safe, comfortable intravenous iron treatments in a dedicated space. We have extended our capacity to include Employment Medicals, Return to Work assessments, and WorkCover consultations to support both patients, employees and local employers with workplace health needs.
The clinic also provides on-site specialists in endocrinology, geriatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and neurology.
“We’re constantly evolving for our patients,” the
team explains, “to make every experience at the clinic as smooth and supportive as possible.” We are planning to introduce more services to our practice.
Are you accepting new patients? Yes –new patients are warmly welcomed. With additional doctors, nurses, and allied health providers, plus extended hours including Sundays (9 am – 5 pm), the clinic can now accommodate more people than ever before. How will the clinic support vulnerable groups like pensioners, children, and those with chronic conditions? Supporting vulnerable and high-needs groups remains a major priority. The clinic has been fortunate to receive funding to support refugee patients, enabling access to bilingual GPs who can assist with both communication and culturally safe care. In addition, new funding has been secured to support diabetic patients in maintaining their long-term health through education, care planning, and team-based management.
The clinic also proudly employs an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, providing culturally
responsive care and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients — ensuring “mob” can access trusted care close to home.
Is this just a policy change or a complete culture shift? This is much more than a billing change — it’s a complete culture shift. The clinic’s leadership is focused on rebuilding a sense of trust, compassion, and teamwork across every level of care. The renewed mission is simple: patients first, always.
Will new technology or systems be introduced to streamline appointments and follow-up care? Yes. The clinic is upgrading to modern digital health systems, including secure messaging, e-prescriptions, and online bookings through HotDoc. Automated reminders, telehealth options, and integrated recall systems will help patients stay on top of their health more easily. And perhaps most importantly: what does
this mean for the everyday experience of seeing your local GP? It means a smoother, more personal, and more affordable experience. Patients will see familiar faces, receive coordinated care from an experienced team, and have access to a wide range of services — all under one roof. The focus is on genuine connection, clear communication, and accessible healthcare for every member of the community. How can people find out more? Visit Coffs Coast GP Super Clinic, 51 Stadium Drive, Coffs Harbour, or call 02 6691 3573

Ultrasound Fertility
If you are seeking answers about your reproductive health, our specialised Fertility Ultrasound can provide clear answers and crucial information to guide your next steps toward conception.
What does a fertility ultrasound show?
Fertility ultrasounds can be considered in 2 stages. In the first, we assess the anatomy of the uterus and other pelvic organs. This detailed, minimally-invasive scan allows us to evaluate your uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures. We look for potential factors that may impact fertility, such as uterine shape abnormalities, fibroids, polyps, ovarian cysts, or signs of conditions like endometriosis. This
foundational information helps your doctor tailor an effective treatment plan.
Can this ultrasound check if my fallopian tubes are open? Yes! In the 2nd stage of fertility assessment, we offer a specialised procedure called Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy), or Tubal Patency Ultrasound. During this test, fluid is introduced into the uterus, and ultrasound imaging follows its flow through the fallopian tubes. This quickly determines if the tubes are patent (open) or blocked - a common cause of infertility. Who can benefit from a Fertility Ultrasound?
Importantly this is not something that everyone needs to do. Anyone experiencing difficulty conceiving or planning fertility treatment (like IVF or IUI) should consider a pelvic ultrasound, or if you are considering starting a family and have pain or irregular bleeding then a baseline assessment can be beneficial. It’s a key step in understanding and addressing fertility challenges.
If you have concerns about your fertility or have been trying for more than 6 months, discuss with your doctor if a fertility ultrasound assessment is right for you.

Rj enzies
A er years dedicated to helping others overcome addiction and rebuild their lives, Rj Menzies has brought his passion and expertise to the Co s Coast. Now serving as Partnerships General Manager of the Australian Recovery Centres, Rj is on a mission to expand addiction recovery and a ercare services in the region, and to foster a stronger, more connected community in the process.
Hi Rj, welcome to Coffs Harbour! Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to work in the field of addiction recovery?
G’day! I am very glad to be here, thanks. I am a qualified Resort Manager having spent 10 years in tourism/hospitality and... I was in active drug and alcohol addiction the whole time! When I got sober I turned my attention towards working in the mental health industry.
You’re the Partnerships General Manager of Australian Recovery Centres, for readers who may not be familiar, can you explain what the organisation does and who it aims to help?
Sure. Australian Recovery Centres is a charity that was set up by the students and colleagues of the late esteemed psychologist Jim Maclaine with the simple purpose of treating addiction. Those students are now at the top of their respective fields and are practising from coast to coast. I have been brought on to expand operations into the aftercare space.
You’ve recently relocated from Byron Bay, where you were nominated for two Citizen of the Year awards, that’s incredible. What kind of community work were you involved in there?
personal and challenging field. What
Thank you, it wasn’t easy. For starters, I volunteered at Fletcher St Cottage, I went on the Lived Experience Advisory Board of The Buttery and I was even a patrolling member of Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club, however it was mainly my efforts in the addiction/mental health space which drew the most attention. I would regularly go to hospitals, rehabs and even prisons to give presentations about addiction, recovery and spirituality.
What inspired your decision to bring your services to Coffs Harbour?
I became aware of the growing homelessness issue in Coffs Harbour, and in my opinion homelessness and addiction are not mutually exclusive. When I was in my addiction I experienced bouts of homelessness, including having no fixed address for many years. I thought I had a medley of mental health issues that I was trying to medicate with drugs and alcohol but it turns out all I had was addiction.
It turns out the medicine for that is learning about recovery from another addict and it turns out the cure is helping others to do the same. Addiction recovery can be a deeply motivates you to keep doing this work?
Yes, that’s true. There are no guarantees of success in this industry. Some of the defeats can be difficult to manage, that’s part of the reason why I get into nature so often. But on the flip side the success stories are absolutely amazing. I have had clients who have completely turned their lives around. There is a common recovery expression that states that “we can only keep what we have by giving it away” and since I am in addiction recovery, it is very rewarding for me to help others.
You have mentioned plans to open a Sober Living Facility or Halfway House here in Coffs. Can you tell us more about what that will look like and who it will serve?
Absolutely, a Halfway House is essentially a residential stepping stone for those who are leaving rehab and looking to integrate back into society. It is a community of sober and
likeminded people helping each other live their best lives! This will look like a large property, hopefully with some animals roaming around and where we could offer a variety of services to the surrounding community, such as men’s circles. This will serve the individual, their families and by keeping men off the streets, it will serve the whole of Coffs Harbour!
What kind of support or partnerships are you hoping to build locally to bring your vision to life?
Why do you think a service like this is particularly important in regional communities like Coffs Harbour?
Well this is not just my opinion, the stats are in and this is a fact: regional communities are proportionally hit hardest by things like drugs, gambling, even domestic violence and homelessness, yet they are also the most under resourced. Coffs is a town that is under-going a period of change, with the by-pass it will be completely unrecognisable in a couple of years.
I like to think that the Australian Recovery Centre’s new Halfway House will be a part of that unrecognisable change.
ere is a common recovery expression that states that “we can only keep what we have by giving it away”, since I am in addiction recovery, it is very rewarding for me to help others.
I am a member of the Coffs Coast Housing Partnership Group. There are a great network of organisations at that table, all with the common goal of addressing homelessness in Coffs. What I am trying to accomplish is not possible without the support of Coffs Council, other organisations, and the Coffs community. I am looking to connect with anyone and everyone that works or volunteers in mental health, addiction, homelessness and/ or any of the social services. I can imagine eventually also having collaborations with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the MERIT program and maybe even TAFE NSW. The opportunities really are limitless. How can local residents who may be
have loved ones support?
struggling, access your
I would like to offer my
services for free to anyone struggling with addiction in Coffs Harbour and the greater region and their families. Please reach out to me at admin@australianrecovery.com
Finally, what’s your broader hope for the future of addiction recovery support in Australia?
I was recently invited to attend the National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre Annual Symposium due to my work as a Researcher with the University of New South Wales. I can say with absolute certainty that the wheels of change are turning, albeit very, very slowly. Addiction can only exist in isolation, so therefore the opposite of addiction is connection. I would love to see more holistic approaches to addiction recovery and I am happy to be a front-runner of this approach. Thanks RJ.

Capturing Community Connection through storytelling
with ANGELA MARTIN
FROM LIFELINE NORTH COAST
Hi, I’m Angela Martin, and together with my friend and colleague Rex Clutario, we’ve launched Humans of North Coast (HONC), a passion project that’s incredibly close to both our hearts. From Yamba to Nambucca Heads, we’re capturing and sharing the stories of everyday people in our community, and the response so far has been nothing short of amazing.
Inspired by the hugely successful Humans of New York concept, HONC brings that same spirit of storytelling to our own backyard. Both Rex and I work at Lifeline North Coast, where we witness daily the power of human connection, resilience, and the importance of being truly heard. HONC was born from that experience and a shared belief that everyone has a story worth telling. With the generous support of the Coffs Focus Magazine team, we’ve been able to bring this vision to life and reach even more people across the region. HONC is about celebrating real people, those you pass on the street, work alongside, or sit next to in a café. People from all walks of life, with different backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences. We want to create a space
where vulnerability is honoured, where people feel safe to share, and where we can all see ourselves reflected in someone else’s story. When we take the time to understand each other, we stop judging. We start connecting and we realise that despite our differences, we all want the same thing: to be seen, to be heard, to be understood, and to feel like we belong. There’s something profoundly powerful about hearing how others navigate grief, overcome obstacles, or find joy in the everyday. These stories teach us, stretch us, and remind us of our shared humanity. They help us grow in empathy and compassion and often give us the courage to face our own challenges. HONC is a space where healing happens through storytelling, where we learn not just about others, but about ourselves. In sharing our struggles and triumphs, we create a ripple effect of

RENAE DONOVAN 3 BEARS COTTAGE
is November, 3 Bears Co age celebrates an incredible milestone, 30 YEARS OF LOVE, LAUGHTER, AND LEARNING. What began as a small childcare centre with a big heart has become a cherished part of the local community. FROM COTTAGE TO COMMUNITY
3 BEARS TURNS
To mark this special occasion, the doors are opening wide for a Farm-Themed Birthday Party on Sunday, November 30th from 9:30am to 12:30pm, welcoming all past and present families, educators, and friends who have been part of the 3 Bears journey.
Thirty years! How did 3 Bears Cottage begin, and what was the vision? When 3 Bears Cottage first opened its doors back in 1995, the goal was simple - to create a place that felt like home. A space where children were known and loved, where families felt supported, and where learning grew naturally through play, curiosity, and relationships. Over time, what began as one small cottage blossomed into something much bigger, a
community. Many of the children who once played here now return as educators or parents themselves, bringing their own little ones to share in the same warmth and sense of belonging that 3 Bears has always stood for.
Which milestones best tell the story of your growth across the decades? There have been many memorable moments over the years, but a few stand out.
The first came early on, when the original cottage quickly filled to capacity and needed to expand. It was a clear sign that families connected deeply with the service’s home-like approach to care and learning.
A proud professional milestone came with achieving an Exceeding rating in all seven National Quality Standard areas, recognition of the dedication, consistency, and quality that defines the team.
Now, this 30-year celebration represents the most meaningful milestone of all. It’s a time to look back at everything achieved, to reflect on generations of families who’ve grown with us, and to celebrate a service that continues to evolve while holding tight to its heart. The most recent renovation, completed just last year, ensures 3 Bears Cottage can continue to nurture future generations in a space that feels both modern and familiar.
What’s planned for the 30th Anniversary Party? Everyone with a connection to 3 Bears, past families, current families, educators, and friends, is warmly invited to join. Whether you’ve been part of the journey for a few months or since the very beginning, this celebration is for you.
Many of the children who once played here now return as educators or parents themselves, bringing their own little ones to share in the same warmth and sense of belonging that 3 Bears has always stood for.
Farm-Themed Festivities: Expect hay bales, country tunes, and plenty of farmyard charm spread throughout the centre grounds. Magic Show: A performance that’s sure to wow both children and grown-ups.
Soft Farm Animal Auction: Guests can outbid friends for a chance to win one of our adorable plush farm animals, all proceeds going to Rural Aid.
Food Stalls: A delicious variety of family friendly bites and drinks will be available throughout the morning.
Cake and Fairy Floss: No birthday is complete without something sweet to celebrate three decades of memories!
Music and Memories: We’ll share old
photos, stories, and songs that remind us just how far we’ve come together.
What has remained at the heart of 3 Bears Cottage through all these years? At 3 Bears Cottage, everything begins with relationships. From day one, the focus has been on creating an environment where children feel secure, respected, and valued for who they are.
Even as the service has grown and evolved, that heart has never changed. The same values that guided 3 Bears in its early dayswarmth, trust, inclusion, and joy, continue to guide every decision today.
Continued over.
Tell us about the team behind 3 Bears, who makes it all happen? The heart of 3 Bears Cottage has always been its people. Many educators have been part of the journey for years, some even decades, bringing consistency, creativity, and deep understanding to their work with children. Each person brings something unique: calmness, humour, imagination, or a nurturing spirit that makes every child feel seen and valued.
What makes this milestone even more meaningful is how the circle has come full. So much family have returned to work at 3 Bears, which says a lot about what this place has meant to them over the years. It must have been a pretty special environment to grow up in, because those

children have chosen to come back, not just as family members, but as educators, colleagues, and leaders. Even some of the centre’s past children are now on staff, having spent almost their whole lives within these walls. Seeing them move from play to profession is one of the greatest joys of all, living proof that 3 Bears truly is a place that shapes hearts and futures.
How has community shaped 3 Bears Cottage? Community has always been at the heart of 3 Bears Cottage. The service has built lasting partnerships with local organisations, schools, and library.
These have created opportunities for children to engage with the wider world, from gardening, and yoga days to visiting residents in aged care and local events like Anzac Day and Clean Up Australia Day.
3 Bears has also led initiatives such as fundraisers for Vinnies, blanket drives, and projects like 30 Acts of Kindness, which teach children the power of empathy and giving.
Supporting Rural Aid through the 30th Anniversary Party continues this long tradition of helping others. It’s a celebration with purpose, a chance to have fun while supporting those who feed and care for our country.
What makes 3 Bears Cottage unique after all these years? Families often describe 3 Bears Cottage as “a place that feels like family.” It’s not just the learning experiences or the beautifully designed spaces, it’s the feeling of belonging that comes from being part of a community that genuinely cares. Celebrations play a big role in that. From personalised birthday traditions created by friends to seasonal gatherings and family events, every moment of joy is treated as something worth sharing. These small rituals have become the fabric of the 3 Bears experience and the reason so many families stay connected long after their children move on to school.
To all the families and educators, past and present, thank you for being part of our story. Your love, trust, and connection have shaped 3 Bears Co age into the home it is today.
Then and Now, A Heartfelt Thank
You to Our Families. As we celebrate 30 years, it’s heartwarming to reflect on how far we’ve come. From handwritten enrolments and photocopied newsletters to instant updates and digital connections, so much has changed, yet the heart of 3 Bears Cottage remains the same. We still know every child by name, cherish every laugh in the yard, and celebrate the simple, meaningful moments that make our community special. To all the families and educators, past and present, thank you for being part of our story. Your love, trust, and connection have shaped 3 Bears Cottage into the home it is today. Here’s to 30 years of memories, and many more still to come.

biggest challenges in pursuing elite-level volleyball?
The travel expenses and logistics have been a huge hurdle for me as competing at a national level for indoor requires regular trips to Sydney. From Bellingen in the past that has proven to be quite a challenge as flights are limited and prices prohibitive for weekly two hour training. Living in a regional area also means less opportunities to be seen by scouts or selectors, so building a reputation requires extra effort, additional pressure to make standout performances and the need for networking, and self-promotion. I was lucky this year with the satellite phoenix program that ran in Coffs Harbour which allowed me to train weekly in preparation for the Australian Youth Beach Volleyball Championships with the help of excellent coaches. Having that access locally made the difference in expanding my development as a player.
Do you have any coaches, mentors, or athletes you look up to for guidance or inspiration?
I play in Division 1 at my home club of Co s Harbour which is a mixed adults comp. So I play against men and women locally at the highest level requiring me to be bold and resilient.

I have been fortunate to have many role models who have influenced and inspired me both locally and internationally. My coaches have played a huge part in my development and progress since the beginning. I also gain inspiration from elite athletes I watch online through volleyball TV. I often watch their games several times a week for both entertainment but also to teach me and remind me what is possible with consistency. I gain inspiration specifically from athletes I personally relate to like Kristen Nuss, Yoshie Takeshita and Masahiro Sekita. They are all considered undersized players who with determination and consistency have made a career in volleyball.
You’ve set your sights on attending the World Championships in Adelaide this November, and dream of playing
there yourself in the future. What kind of support would make the biggest difference for you right now as you work toward your dream?
I am volunteering at the Beach World Cup this November in Adelaide so that I can meet the world's best and be involved on the court. This is so exciting for me and will show me what it's like to play at that level. I think it will be advantageous to meet the elite and work with Volleyball Australia to help promote recognition of the sport in Australia. I aim to play at the highest level that I can in both beach and indoor and would love to make it to the Olympics or World Championships and play internationally. Volleyball is my life. I love the physical aspects but also the tactical and strategic elements that are required of setters in game.
I'm also preparing for a big year ahead in both the beach and indoor volleyball seasons, with tournaments and competitions across the state that require travel, gear, and ongoing training support. As someone coming from a small regional town, these opportunities mean the world to me but they come with significant costs. I have a Go Fund Me page to help fundraise towards my goals. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps me take a step closer to my dreams and I’m so grateful for your support. gofund.me/32125e40c
You can follow me on instagram @dala_ willoughby.
Where do you see yourself in five years time, both on and off the court?
I see myself competing at national and international levels. I want to be part of a high-performance program that challenges me technically and mentally, whether it be playing indoor for a team in Europe or representing Australia on the beach, working my way up to get to the highest level possible. Off the court I see myself studying or educating myself to help understand what makes athletes thrive, possibly sports physiotherapy, psychology, science or coaching. I hope to broaden my knowledge and share my experiences in order to help other athletes in regional areas to have a chance at making it big.
Thanks Dala.
Key
Key Community Group has secured a major government contract to expand its disability employment services along the Mid North Coast. From 1 November, Key will deliver the new Inclusive Employment Australia program. We sat down with CEO Jodi Wood to find out more.
ongratulations on securing the new Inclusive Employment Australia contract!
What does this mean for Key and the Coffs Coast community?
Thank you, we’re incredibly proud of this achievement. For us, it’s not just a new contract; it’s the continuation of something we’ve been passionate about for more than 30 years. Since 1991, our purpose has been to help people with disability find meaningful, open employment and being chosen to continue that work is a real honour. We’re now the only locally run, not-for-profit provider delivering these services on the Coffs Coast, which makes it even more
special. It means we can keep doing what we love, walking alongside participants, families and employers to create genuine opportunities and lasting change right here at home.
How does the new Inclusive Employment Australia program work? The new program is designed to make employment support more accessible for people with disability. Under the new model, any person with a disability who wants to work, even if it’s just a few hours a week, can access help and guidance through the program.
Support is tailored to each person’s needs. Some people might need extra time and
assistance to build confidence or develop new skills, while others are ready to take the next step into a job. There are no time limits, people can stay connected and receive support for as long as they need.
It’s also great for local employers. The program provides practical tools like workplace assessments, wage subsidies, coaching and inclusion training, helping businesses create supportive environments where people with disability can succeed and stay long term. What are some of the barriers people with disability still face in gaining employment? One in five Australians live
with a disability, yet only around 48% are employed compared with 80% of people without disability. That difference reflects the ongoing challenges many people face, from misconceptions about their abilities to limited opportunities for inclusive workplaces. Many people with disability experience repeated rejection and a lack of understanding about what real inclusion looks like. Inclusive Employment Australia aims to change that, by connecting people with employers who see their value and are ready to build workplaces where everyone can contribute and belong.
How does Key Community lead by example? At Key, inclusion isn’t just something we talk about, it’s who we are. From the very beginning, we’ve been committed to creating equal access to employment for people with disability, constantly learning and improving along the way.
More than a quarter of our team have a disability bringing with them qualities of

resilience, adaptability, and loyalty. Our diversity only makes us stronger. Our staff retention rate is above 85%. We’re not just promoting inclusive employment; we’re living it.
Can you share a local success story?
We’re proud to celebrate Phoenix, who recently started as a Grounds Assistant at Coffs Coast Holiday Parks. Phoenix, who is non-verbal and lives with an intellectual disability, developed his skills and confidence through Key’s Garden Work Experience Program.
With the support of his employers Lauren & Steven and the wider Key team, Phoenix now thrives in a role he loves, maintaining gardens, connecting with people, and taking pride in his work. His story is more than employment; it’s about purpose, belonging, and the power of opportunity. (Read Phoenix’s full story at keycommunitygroup.com.au)

The 2019-2020 bushfire season is still very fresh in our memories. For many of us, the images of burning forests, homes reduced to ashes, and skies turned orange are not just scenes from the news but deeply personal experiences that we lived through.
That summer, Australia faced one of its most devastating bushfire seasons in history. Across the country, 33 lives were tragically lost, over 3,000 homes were destroyed, and millions of hectares of land was scorched.
The toll on our communities was profound, with the emotional and economic impacts still being felt today.
As we struggled to recover from the fires, the world quickly plunged into a new crisis, COVID-19. The pandemic shifted global attention away from the aftermath of the bushfires, yet the scars remain. For those who lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones, the pain of that summer has not diminished with time.
Instead, it has been compounded by the challenges of living through a pandemic, with many still trying to rebuild their lives in a world that has been turned upside down.
Now, with a new bushfire season under way, there are growing concerns about what lies ahead.
After a few years of wetter conditions, the
landscape is in good shape, a welcome sight after the drought-stricken years that fuelled the 2019-2020 fires.
However, this abundant growth also means that there is now a significant amount of fuel on the ground, increasing the potential for severe bushfires.
While we may not face another season like 2019-2020 this year, experts warn that the risk remains high, and if not this year, then certainly in the very near future.
This brings us to the importance of hazard reduction. There is no doubt that the most effective tool we have to reduce the impact of bushfires is to reduce the amount of fuel in the forest.
By carefully and strategically reducing the amount of flammable vegetation through controlled burns and through mechanical means, we can significantly lower the risk of catastrophic fires.
Hazard reduction is not just about protecting property; it’s about saving lives. It is a proactive measure that can make the difference between a manageable fire and one that spirals out of control, threatening entire communities. However, hazard reduction is not something that can be solely left to the authorities. Rural landholders have a crucial role to play in protecting their properties and their communities.
There are several steps that can be taken to minimise the risk of bushfires and protect homes:
Clear vegetation: Ensure that any flammable vegetation is cleared away from homes and structures. This includes keeping grass short, removing dead branches, and maintaining a firebreak around your property.
Maintain gutters: Clean out gutters regularly to prevent them from becoming a source of fuel for embers.
Prepare your home: Install screens on windows and doors to protect against embers, and ensure that your property has adequate water supplies, such as a water tank, swimming pool or dam, that can be used in the event of a fire.
Have a bushfire plan: Develop a bushfire survival plan with your family, outlining what you will do if a fire threatens your property. Make sure everyone knows their role and what to do.
Stay informed: Keep up to date with fire warnings and weather conditions through the HazardsNearMe app. On high-risk days, be ready to act quickly if needed.
By taking these steps and working together as a community, we can be better prepared for the challenges of the bushfire season.
While we cannot prevent bushfires entirely, we can reduce their impact and protect what matters most, our homes, our environment, and our loved ones.

Our 3 or 7 day escape is designed to reduce stress, bring ease of movement and promote good health and deep relaxation. It also offers respite and rejuvenation from the stresses of daily life inviting you to slow down and connect with nature.
What’s your favourite part of the work you do?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is witnessing the positive change in people as they slow down and reconnect. Seeing someone leave the class feeling lighter, calmer, and more confident reminds me why I do what I do. It’s deeply fulfilling to facilitate that transformation and create space for wellbeing in people’s busy lives. Who is your greatest influence in business?
I am inspired by women who lead with authenticity and purpose - those who build businesses that reflect their values while making a genuine impact. I’ve been fortunate to learn from mentors and yoga teachers who combine integrity, creativity and
compassion in their work.
What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast?
The Coffs Coast offers a wonderful balance of community and natural beauty. The surrounding valleys, ocean and open spaces create a peaceful setting that perfectly compliments a yoga lifestyle. The supportive local community and the region’s relaxed pace make it an ideal place to live and share my passion.
What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world?
Believe in your vision and take consistent steps towards it. Progress doesn’t always come from having everything figured out; it comes from showing up and learning as you go. Stay true to your values, seek support and trust that your individuality is your greatest advantage. I believe everyone has something unique to offer others.

AGILE ACCOUNTING SUPPORT
SHannah Wait leads Agile Accounting Support, a boutique financial firm helping Mid North Coast businesses gain clarity and control over their finances. With 16+ years in finance, including roles as a CFO and Audit Manager, she brings expert knowledge in audit, accounting standards, and senior finance.
as a CFO and Audit Manager, she brings
ince moving to Australia in 2013, Hannah has focused on practical solutions that strengthen controls and reduce risk. Based in Coffs Harbour, she founded Agile Accounting Support to deliver personalised, honest support while balancing family life.
What inspired you to start Agile Accounting Support, and how does your firm differ from traditional accounting practices?
I’d been thinking about starting my own business for a while and after having my second child, decided this was the best time to go for it.
I wanted to create a firm that offered services drawing on my experience as an auditor (and CFO) to help give meaningful insight to businesses about their numbers throughout the year - rather than finding out several months after year-end how they’ve performed when the tax return is due. There are also few accounting firms
that specialise in assisting charities. I’ve encountered many non-compliant audited financials submitted to the ACNC and I aim to be the firm that charities turn to for audits (for NSW incorporated associations only), preparation of compliant reports for all charities as well as assistance in other areas, such as tracking and reporting for grant acquittals.
Could you share more about your achievement of being national dux in three tax agent subjects? How has that shaped your career?
I’d never heard of the term dux until I achieved it. Once I realised what it meant, it gave me confidence to assist clients with tax advice, as the Australian tax system is very different to the UK.
I’ve now commenced a Diploma in IT with La Trobe University and it’s a big motivation to continue achieving high marks in each module.
What are some of the common financial or accounting challenges that businesses
in the Mid North Coast region face?
One big challenge for regional businesses is keeping up with the changing technology landscape – whether implementing AI tools to gain efficiencies, or up-to-date cybersecurity measures to keep financial information secure. The Diploma in IT will give me deeper knowledge to assist businesses in these spaces in the future.
How do you help businesses improve their internal controls and reduce risk through your services?
I firstly understand how the business operates now and what the business sees as weaknesses. Using my audit background, I then suggest ways of improving the processes that fit into the way owners run their business. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution and that’s why it’s so important to work together. Businesses need to easily adapt controls into day-to-day processes otherwise they won’t be implemented.
Flexibility is important to you as a business owner and parent. How has
Agile Accounting Support allowed you to balance your professional and personal life?
As an early-riser, getting up, having a quiet coffee then getting stuck into work first thing really suits me. Knowing I’ve already achieved something with my day reduces the angst caused when working for someone else if there are delays getting my children ready or looking after them when they are sick.
Trust, openness, and collaboration are core values of your business. How do you cultivate these in your relationships with clients?
I worked with an audit partner who’d openly admit to clients when he didn’t know or understand something. I’d assumed, as a voice of authority, you should know everything! It was so refreshing to hear him admit he didn’t, and clients would respond really well, often opening up further.
Passionate clients are always happy to talk about their business if you ask the right questions. Admitting you’re unsure of a technical question gives them the confidence and trust in knowing that when you do give them an answer after researching, they can rely on it.
Businesses respond much better if you’re genuinely interested in what they do and really want to work with them to improve it.
I’d love for Agile to be the firm businesses turn to when they really want to understand meaning with their numbers throughout the year and create efficiencies with their processes, as well as charities for reporting compliance. .
What advice would you give to small business owners who feel overwhelmed by their finances or accounting responsibilities?
Be flexible and ask for help. You’ve set up
your business because you’re an expert in that field – but that doesn’t mean you are, or even should be, an expert at everything else within your business. If someone can suggest a better or more efficient way of doing something, listen, and give it a try.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for Agile Accounting Support in the next few years?
I’d love for Agile to be the firm businesses
turn to when they really want to understand meaning with their numbers throughout the year and create efficiencies with their processes, as well as charities for reporting compliance. Eventually, it would be great if I was an initial go-to for assisting with AI solutions or educating businesses on improving their cyberhealth, so watch this space!

BK. ENGINEERING CONSULTING SOLUTIONS
CONNECTING COMMUNITIES FOR 10 YEARS AND COUNTING
From a Nana Glen spare bedroom to a thriving regional team of engineers, designers, dra spersons, environmental specialists and administration support we chat to Peter Mahar, the founder of BK. Engineering Consulting Solutions
BKnowledge) marks ten years of connecting communities across regional NSW. We sat down with founder Peter Mahar, fresh from his Coffs Coast Business Awards finalist nod, to reflect on the journey, the rebrand, and the team behind BK.’s success. Peter, congratulations on ten years, a rebrand and your finalist recognition, that’s quite a milestone! How does it feel looking back to where it all began?
Thank you. It’s been a remarkable journey. We started in 2015 in a spare bedroom in Nana Glen, just me, a laptop, and a determination to make regional engineering better. There were plenty of long nights and strong coffees in those early days, but the goal was simple: to deliver practical, reliable engineering that helps communities thrive. Ten years later, we’ve grown to a team of over 26 people with offices in Coffs Harbour, Grafton, and Lismore, and we’re still driven by that same
that set Bridge Knowledge - now BK. - in motion?
I had always dreamed of running my own business and was becoming very jaded working for large corporations and government. My beliefs and values conflicted with bureaucracy and in 2015 an opportunity presented itself to combine my two career passions: bridge engineering and regional Australia. I wanted to create a business that treated each team member as a valued and essential part of our success, recognising their individuality and contributions, rather than seeing them as nameless cogs in a machine. Our differentiator is based on the inflexibility of the engineering consulting industry to

focus on solutions driven by the client, rather than dictating an outcome. That belief in relationships, not just results, has shaped everything since.
BK.’s vision talks about connecting communities by creating safe, functional, and resilient infrastructure. What does that mean in practice?
For us, it’s not just a tagline, it’s our compass. Whether we’re supporting a council with a complex civil project, providing engineering for someone’s dream home, working on a subdivision development, or designing the foundations for a new deck, the outcome
Solutions (formerly Bridge What was the spark
must make the community safer and more connected. Engineering is about people; we have the responsibility to ensure designs meet strict Australian standards whilst balancing cost-effective solutions. Ultimately, we are about making sure families can get to school safely, that structures are safe, and regional towns have the infrastructure they deserve. That’s what keeps our team motivated every day.
Speaking of your team, BK. has grown rapidly over the years. What’s been key to that success?
Honestly, it’s the people. We’ve built a team that shares the same values of honesty, integrity, and excellence. Many of our team grew up locally or have put their roots down in this beautiful part of NSW, so they care deeply about the regions they serve. We’ve also worked hard to create a culture where everyone matters. We are genuine about our team living a balanced life, and personal growth is equally as important as business growth. The team’s technical excellence, professionalism and passion are the reason
clients come back to us again and again.
You recently rebranded from Bridge Knowledge to BK. Engineering Consulting Solutions, what inspired the change?
The rebrand is about growth and clarity for the future. Bridge Knowledge was a great name when we focused on bridge and structural projects, but we’ve evolved into a truly multi-disciplinary consultancy with civil, structural, development and environment projects. The new name, BK. Engineering Consulting Solutions, honours our history while reflecting our broader capabilities. “Solutions” captures what clients tell us they value most: outcomes that are fit-for-purpose, match available budgets, and are resilient for the future.
To cap it off, you were named a finalist for Outstanding Business Leader at the Coffs Coast Business Awards. What does that recognition mean to you and the BK. team?
It is incredibly humbling. Being recognised among so many outstanding local businesses
is a credit to our whole team. They’re the ones delivering results day-in, day-out, from inspecting infrastructure after floods to supporting clients through complex civil and structural engineering challenges. The nomination was secretly submitted by the team with personal anecdotes from individuals, and this makes me very proud, and is all the recognition I need.
Finally, how will BK. celebrate this 10year milestone?
We are not big on public celebrations, we will take a moment to pause and thank everyone who’s been part of the journey, our clients, councils, subcontractors, and of course, our people. Our annual Christmas party will be extra special this year. The rebranding to BK. Engineering Consulting Solutions is a huge part of our celebrations, while it honours our past, it sets a solid foundation for our future with the same great people, same values, and a stronger platform for our team.

New to the Coffs Coast scene, Véla Living is a curated homewares and lifestyle store blending timeless design, thoughtful materials, and everyday function and is the passion project of Jenni Graetz,.
hat’s the story behind Véla Living? Why the name, and what sparked the launch now? The word Véla means “sail” in Latin, chosen in memory of my Dad. It captures the feeling of open horizons and that effortless sense of freedom you get by the sea. It also ties perfectly with our Living philosophy of creating spaces you truly love to live in.
The idea for Véla Living came from a real gap I saw in the local market. There simply wasn’t anywhere on the Coffs Coast to find high-quality, design-focused furniture and homewares that balance style, sustainability, and everyday living. I wanted to change that. With a background in styling, from years as
a makeup artist and visual merchandiser to styling homes across the coast, opening my own store has been a long-held dream. Véla Living is the realisation of that vision: a space that celebrates thoughtful design, supports makers, and helps people create homes that feel both beautiful and truly lived-in.
In a sentence, what gap does Vela Living fill in the local market? You used to have to travel to a capital city to find the range and style of brands we stock. Véla Living fills the gap by bringing a curated selection of premium, design-led brands to the Coffs Coast, offering timeless, functional pieces that elevate the relaxed yet refined style of local homes.
Describe the Véla aesthetic in three words, and what won’t make the cut
on your shelves. Effortless, considered, authentic living. (Technically four, but it sums us up perfectly)!
We value quality and integrity in every detail. Each piece must feel beautiful, function well, and last. If it’s not something I’d proudly have in my own home, it doesn’t make the cut.
With an eye for quality and a knack for warm, understated style, Jenni is building a brand that champions makers, elevates the in-store experience, and inspires beautiful, practical homes.
How do you curate: sourcing, brand selection, and your non-negotiables on quality and sustainability? Curation is everything. We only bring in pieces we truly believe in. Products that are made well, designed with intention, and aligned with our values. Every item in the store is hand-selected for its craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless appeal.
I personally visit brand showrooms to see and feel each piece before it makes the cut. We work with brands like Uniqwa, Saarde, Inartisan, and Karina Jambrak to name a few. These brands don’t just look good; they share our commitment to quality, authenticity, and considered design.
What can first-time visitors expect? Price range, services (styling, gifting), and the in-store experience? Expect a relaxed, beautiful space where you can slow down, be inspired, and find pieces that truly feel like home. We offer everything from candles, jewellery, and soft furnishings to high-end furniture and statement décor. Our price range reflects that variety, from accessible everyday pieces to timeless investment items.
Véla Living also offers home styling consultations, both in-store and at home. Whether you’re furnishing an entire space or just need guidance on finishing touches, we’ll help bring your vision together.
For those looking for something special, we also offer a considered gifting range and gift vouchers, perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or simply treating someone you love.
Buy sell build
How will you collaborate with local makers or partner with other small businesses and events? Supporting local and independent makers is a huge part of what we do. We love showcasing unique pieces that reflect the creativity of our community, and we’re always open to collaborating with local furniture and homeware brands, stylists, and event organisers to celebrate and elevate local design.
Will you offer online shopping or clickand-collect, and how will you keep the in-store magic online? Yes, absolutely. Our
website velaliving.com.au offers click-andcollect, shipping, and local delivery.
The online store mirrors our in-store aesthetic, is easy to navigate, plus you’ll still receive the same personal service we’re known for, whether you shop in person or from home. That said, there’s nothing quite like visiting in person: the textures, scents, and atmosphere really make it special.
What’s been your biggest challenge so far, and what’s one piece of advice you’d share with new retailers launching in 2025. There have definitely been a few sleepless nights in the lead-up. Opening a store is a huge undertaking! But since the grand opening, everything has flowed beautifully. The community support has been amazing.
My advice? Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, because you can. If you have a dream, work hard, stay focused, and back yourself. That’s how you turn vision into reality.
How can we get in touch? Open 9am–3pm daily at Coffs Garden World. Shop online at velaliving.com.au. For enquiries call 0455 299 522 or email info@velaliving.com.au
BRENDAN GRAETZ
North Coast Power + Water
Celebrating 25 years on the Coffs Coast, North Coast Power + Water has become a trusted local leader in solar, pumping, irrigation, and water solutions. At the helm, Brendan Graetz and his team continue to drive innovation and resilience across the region. We sat down with Brendan to look back on the journey, and what’s next for NCP+W.
Take us back to the start. Why did you launch North Coast Power + Water, and what gap were you determined to fill? My parents purchased the business in 2000 when we moved to Coffs Harbour from Darwin. With my father’s strong background in electrical work and pumping systems, he expanded the range to better serve local needs. At the time, solar was in its infancy and irrigation options were limited, so our family set out to make innovative technology accessible, backed by genuine, reliable advice and service that still defines us today.
Brendan, what inspired you to take over the family business, and what does reaching 25 years mean to you? NCP+W was my first job in high school, and apart from a few years working as National
Marketing Manager for a major wholesaler, it’s been my life’s work. That experience gave me the confidence and perspective to take over the family business and continue its growth.
Reaching 25 years is a huge milestone, it’s a reflection of our values: local expertise, reliability, and genuine community connection. I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come, our team, and the loyal customers who continue to back us. Every project, challenge and innovation has helped shape who we are today.
How has your mix of solar, pumping, irrigation and water solutions evolved, and what do you offer today that you couldn’t a decade ago? Technology has advanced rapidly, driving smarter, more efficient solutions across every part of our business. Solar power is now more affordable, heat pumps are the go-to for hot water and
pool heating, and wireless irrigation systems allow full farm control from your phone. Water filtration and treatment have also become essential as people prioritise health and quality.
With such a broad product range, we adapt quickly to meet changing needs, expanding into new categories and maintaining a fullservice approach with trusted local trades. The technology has evolved, but our focus on reliability, innovation, and local service remains the same.
Tell us about your recent award win. Winning the Davey Water Master Dealer of the Year was a standout moment for us. It’s recognition from another proudly Australian brand that shares our values of quality, reliability, and innovation. For what I still see as a small local business on the Coffs Coast, receiving a national award like this is a real credit to our team and the network of
Buy sell build
trades, farmers, and homeowners who support us.
Who’s behind the results? Introduce the team and the values that keep quality high year after year. We’ve got a tight-knit team of nine, each bringing specialised expertise across trade, irrigation, repairs, and system design. Everyone’s a bit of an all-rounder, which means we can adapt quickly and problemsolve on the go.
Whether it’s a farm pump or a home water filtration system, every project gets the same level of attention. We’re not just a workplace; we’re a family.
weathered and what did it teach you? We’ve faced just about everything: supply chain shortages, floods, and rising costs. The biggest lesson has been adaptability. You can’t control the weather or global markets, but you can control how you respond. We’ve learned to plan ahead, diversify suppliers, and keep stock on hand so our customers aren’t left waiting. Resilience is everything in this industry.
supplies. It’s a big step forward for us. My advice to other family-run businesses? Stay true to your values, but don’t be afraid to evolve Listen to your customers, back your team, and never stop learning - that’s how you build something that lasts.
A final message to your customers and team on this milestone year? A huge thank you to our customers for their trust and loyalty, and to our team for their dedication every single day. This year’s about celebrating where we’ve come from and where we’re going. Here’s to the next 25 years of powering and watering the Coffs Coast.
What keeps the quality high is shared values: honesty, craftsmanship, and pride in doing the job right. Whether it’s a farm pump or a home water filtration system, every project gets the same level of attention. We’re not just a workplace; we’re a family.
What’s the toughest challenge you’ve
Looking ahead, what innovations or opportunities excite you most, and what’s your advice to regional business owners starting today? There’s a lot to be excited about. The future lies in helping people understand and embrace new technology, giving growers, homeowners, and businesses the confidence to make smarter choices.
We’re also preparing for our move to larger, more accessible premises at Coffs Garden World later this summer. The new space will feature a huge showroom, seven-day trading, and an expanded range including tanks of all sizes, and a broader range of plumbing

KADO RESIDENCES Welcome to
COFFS HARBOUR
INTERVIEW WITH KADO GROUP FOUNDER, MARK BINDON
The way we live is changing, and so is the way we define home. In a world where function and form are no longer separate goals, Kado Residences emerge as a response to modern living: elegant, intelligent, and adaptable. Designed for over60s seeking vibrant coastal living with easy access to local shops, cafés, and exclusive, on-site wellness amenities, this is retirement living like never before. At Kado, we believe true wellness isn’t achieved by chance, it’s cultivated through consistent use of worldclass, science-backed wellness therapies. This philosophy defines our difference and sets us apart from other retirement operators.
What inspired the creation of the Kado Residences concept?
Our inspiration comes from decades in retirement living, not just building communities but truly understanding how people want to live as they grow older. Too many developments are built for convenience, not longevity. They focus on buildings, not wellbeing.
Kado was created to change that - to design homes that go beyond function, places that nurture wellbeing, independence, and happiness. Wellness isn’t an add-on; it’s the foundation. Each Kado community integrates world-class wellness infrastructure, from hyperbaric oxygen therapy and red-light recovery to infrared saunas, mineral pools, and salt rooms, because health is the truest form of wealth.
How do you define “practical luxury” in today’s residential landscape?
living comfortably with world-class standards. It’s thoughtful design that feels high-end yet intuitivespaces that anticipate your needs rather than demand attention.
At Kado, that means generously sized floorplans with open layouts and seamless indoor–outdoor flow, beautiful kitchens with thoughtful storage, lighting that calms, and finishes chosen for both form and feel. Luxury isn’t loud; it’s in the textures, proportions, and quiet confidence that every
detail has been considered.
What makes these homes stand out from traditional high-end developments?
Most luxury apartments are built to sell, not to live in. Kado is different. Every element, from architecture to operation, is centred on living well.
Our residences are designed for those over 60 who value independence without the complexity of strata management or investor turnover. We operate under the Retirement Villages Act, offering stability and protection.
How do you balance style with functionality in your design process?
At Kado, we design from the inside out, beginning with how people live, move, rest, and connect.
Layouts prioritise light, flow, and comfort. Wide hallways, level transitions, and natural materials bring calm and ease. Every detail, from acoustics to orientation, serves one purpose: to make daily life simpler and more enjoyable.
In what ways do you ensure the design remains timeless yet future-ready?
Timeless design means balance and using enduring materials and natural tones that age gracefully. Our designs are shaped by decades of experience and conversations with thousands of retirement village residents. These insights have informed every detail of how we build and design.
We also design for tomorrow, ensuring every apartment is thoughtfully future-proofed to support our residents’ evolving lifestyle. Step-free layouts, wide doorways, and generous open spaces make every residence effortlessly accessible and easy to navigate.
Designed for comfort and longevity, these homes offer beauty without barriers - elegant, functional, and ready to support your lifestyle for decades to come.
Why should someone over 60 choose Kado Residences instead of a traditional apartment?
In a standard apartment, you can face many expensive, unpredictable fees and neighbours, and ongoing maintenance costs. Many are also surrounded by transient Airbnb rentals, creating instability and noise. Kado removes that stress.
Our model means no strata or council rates, no stamp duty, and no hidden levies, just one transparent weekly fee. When it’s time to sell, our shared capital-gain model rewards both you and Kado.
With no short-term rentals or transient neighbours, every residence remains peaceful, secure, and communityminded - a place where you truly know the people around you.
Why did you decide to keep it boutique with only 25 apartments?
The decision to keep the development boutique was intentional. With just 25 residences, Kado Coffs Harbour offers a sense of connection, privacy, and personalisation that larger developments can’t match.
Smaller scale preserves calm, quality, and long-term value, creating a sanctuary by the sea that always feels personal and serene. Kado Residences are truly exclusive.
What kind of lifestyle do you envision for residents at Kado Coffs Harbour?
Kado is for those who see this next chapter as their most fulfilling yet, people who value independence, wellbeing, and community.
Start the day with a swim in the heated mineral pool, unwind in the infrared sauna, or experience deep restoration in the hyperbaric chamber and red-light therapy bed at the on-site Kado Wellness Centre.
It’s a lifestyle that celebrates balance, privacy when you want it, connection when you choose it. Every detail supports a life of vitality, purpose, and ease.
How can people find out more?
We warmly invite you to book a private appointment and discover the lifestyle that awaits at Kado Residences Coffs Harbour.
Our team would be delighted to guide you through designs, pricing, and availability.

Lifestyle Group Expands Its Presence Across Regional NSW with the Acquisition of Nolan Partners Coffs Harbour
LIFESTYLE
Group acquires Nolan Partners Coffs Harbour
ifestyle Group has strengthened its footprint across regional New South Wales, proudly welcoming Nolan Partners Coffs Harbour to its growing network of purpose-built, people-first real estate offices.
Founded by David Gray, Lifestyle Group continues to build a movement redefining what success looks like in regional Australiaone that’s not about size or scale, but about impact, opportunity, and belonging.
“Coffs Harbour is a very strategic acquisition for us - connecting our local offices in Nambucca, Valla and Bellingen in the south with our Clarence Valley offices in Grafton, Wooli, Yamba and Maclean,” said David Gray, CEO and Founder of Lifestyle Group.
“It completes an important piece in our footprint along the Mid North Coast, creating greater opportunity for our teams and clients alike. We now have a presence that spans the coast from Forster to Brunswick Heads and as far west as the rural heartlands of Casino.”
For the founders of Nolan Partners, Melissa and Scott Nolan, joining Lifestyle was about alignment of values, opportunity for their team, and a shared vision for the future.
Nolan Partners brings with it more than two decades of trusted experience and deep community roots, making it a natural fit for the Lifestyle Group.
“Nolan Partners have been a serious player in the Coffs Harbour market for almost
21 years to the day,” said Jonathan Maggs, Lifestyle’s Head of Brand & Client Experience.
“Their mission and values align perfectly with ours - this merger was a no-brainer. Together, we’ll continue building genuine relationships and delivering a real estate experience grounded in care, connection and community.”
For the founders of Nolan Partners, Melissa and Scott Nolan, joining Lifestyle was about alignment of values, opportunity for their team, and a shared vision for the future.
“Being a longstanding business for over two decades, when the opportunity came along

to join Lifestyle, our number one priority was our team,” said Melissa Nolan. “We wanted to ensure we were aligning with a group that would allow our people to grow and thrive. Lifestyle has built a reputation for fostering an environment that genuinely supports its people, encouraging collaboration, innovation, and professional development. Their focus reflects exactly what Nolan Partners has always stood forcommunity, connection, and care - so this partnering just made sense.”
After more than two decades serving the Coffs Harbour community, the decision to join Lifestyle marks a significant next step in their evolution.
While we’ve always been proud to lead the market on the Coffs Coast, we’re never content to stand still - we’re always striving for more.
“Things are constantly changing in real estate, and that pace of change is only going to accelerate,” they said. “While we’ve always been proud to lead the market on the Coffs Coast, we’re never content to stand stillwe’re always striving for more. Joining Lifestyle felt like the next natural step to make sure we continue to give both our clients and our team the very best. Being part of a larger network means greater access to training, innovation, and resources that ultimately benefit our clients. It also opens up more career runways and growth opportunities for our team, which has always been a big priority for us.”
And while the business evolves, its local heart remains unchanged.
“Our team isn’t changing - we’re all still the same locals who live, work, and invest right
here in the community. That local heart and connection will never change; it’s who we are,” they added.
“What this partnership gives us is a greater reach and access to the best minds and resources across the region. It means we can continue to do what we love - supporting our community - while also learning and growing alongside some of the most forward-thinking professionals in the industry. Personally and professionally, it’s about evolving without losing touch with the people and the place that made us who we are.”
Looking ahead, the team sees the partnership as the next chapter in an already remarkable story.
“What excites us most is that while the name might be changing, the essence of who we are isn’t,” with Scott Nolan adding “Nolan Partners has always been more than a brand - it’s the people, the relationships, and the legacy we’ve built over the past two decades. That’s what continues. This partnership with Lifestyle allows us to build on everything we’ve achieved while opening new doors for
our team, our clients, and the Coffs Harbour community. There’s a real sense of momentum - and we’re excited to see what we can achieve together.”
While the acquisition expands Lifestyle’s geographic reach, David Gray is clear that the brand’s focus remains firmly on people, not postcodes.
“When we grow, it’s never about adding dots on a map,” he said. “It’s about creating opportunity, backing local teams, and investing in the communities we believe in. We want to make sure regions like Coffs Harbour continue to thrive - economically, socially, and personally - because when our communities prosper, we all do.”
The addition of Coffs Harbour follows a string of strategic acquisitions across Nambucca Heads, Valla, Harrington, Bellingen and Halliday’s Point, reinforcing Lifestyle’s long-term vision to move the Great Australian Dream regional - where life feels fuller, not faster, and success is defined by meaning, not just metrics.

Mentorship, Community, and Heart at the Core of Our Team
Opening Message from Premier, Chris Minns
Minister for Housing, Rose Jackson sets the tone for the Forum
COFFS COAST HOUSING - SOLUTIONS IN ACTION Business FOCUS
with ROD BARNABY REGIONAL DIRECTOR
In October, the Business NSW team and I had the privilege of hosting a Housing Forum in Coffs Harbour, bringing together business leaders, government representatives, and community stakeholders to tackle one of the region’s most pressing challenges: ensuring housing supply keeps pace with our rapidly growing population. The forum offered an important opportunity to explore practical solutions that support liveability, infrastructure, and economic growth across the Mid North Coast.
New data presented at the forum underscores the scale of the challenge. Coffs Harbour is now the fastest-growing area on the Mid North Coast and across Northern NSW with projections showing the region will welcome more than 570 new residents each year through to 2041. Peter Bell, Director of Par8o, highlighted that the Coffs Coast is projected to retain 20.7% of Northern NSW’s population over the next two decades. This rapid growth places increasing pressure on housing supply, affordability, schools, and infrastructure - all essential for sustaining our community and workforce.
“The biggest point from our report is that we need more housing supply; it’s a national issue, and we need to start taking action to remove barriers and get housing on the ground,” Peter said.
“Housing supply is really on the critical path now, and we need to get that piece of the puzzle right. Once we do, the region can fully reach its potential economically and socially. To achieve
this, we need to revisit planning and land zoning, especially in industrial areas, and allow flexibility to unlock housing and create job opportunities.”
During the forum, we explored a range of practical approaches, from streamlined planning approvals and flexible land zoning to balancing tourism accommodation with long-term rental supply, incentives for essential workers, and innovative housing models such as infill development and smaller, affordable homes. I had the pleasure of moderating a panel featuring Peter Bell (Par8o), Damian Chapelle (Newton Denny Chapelle), Madeleine Lawler (RDA Mid North Coast), Ian Fitzgibbon (Coffs Harbour City Council), Penny Jones (Mid North Coast Local Health District), and Leah Tucker (Business NSW – Senior Policy Manager). Our discussion highlighted how rising demand for townhouses and small apartments is constrained by high costs and complex planning rules, and the importance of collaboration across government, business, and the community to create practical housing solutions.
Mayor Nikki Williams reflected on the forum:
“Everyone benefits from today’s event. We’re not just talking about delivering housing. It’s about what type of housing we need, what our biggest pain points are, and what we can do together and individually to move housing delivery along.”
Ian Fitzgibbon reinforced that partnership is essential:
“We’re in a housing crisis on the North Coast of New South Wales, and we want to work
with government, industry, and the community to bring forward solutions and supply the community with housing diversity.”
Penny Jones highlighted the need for better infrastructure and community amenities, particularly additional childcare facilities, to unlock workforce participation. Leah Tucker explained how the Minns Government’s proposed planning reforms, including streamlined approvals and reduced red tape, will help deliver homes faster to those who need them most.
It was fantastic to see such a broad range of stakeholders come together for a meaningful and solutions-focused discussion on housing.
A huge thanks to our event partners, City of Coffs Harbour, Clarence Property, Regional Development Australia, Par8o, Newton Denny Chapelle, and Mid North Coast Local Health District, for supporting us to deliver such a crucial event for the Coffs Coast.
We sincerely appreciate the support of Premier Chris Minns and Minister Jackson in providing welcoming remarks to open the Forum, and we thank our panellists for generously sharing their time, expertise and lived experience to help drive this important conversation.
Hosting this forum reminded me that housing is not just about numbers. It’s about creating communities where people can live, work, and thrive. By aligning planning, infrastructure, and innovative housing delivery, Coffs Coast can continue to grow as a strong, liveable, and economically vibrant regional hub.

Property prices on the Coffs Coast, like anywhere else, are ultimately determined by the balance of demand and supply. Yet the factors influencing what a home sells for are often more complex than they first appear. Buyers, sellers, and investors all contribute to market dynamics and the result is that a property is rarely worth one fixed figure, but rather a range of values depending on the circumstances of the sale and the motivations of the parties involved.
Key demand factors
Population growth and migration – The Coffs Coast continues to attract new residents from all the capital cities as well as inland regional areas. Lifestyle appeal, affordability compared to capital cities and strong infrastructure and employment such as the airport and hospital all support steady demand.
Lifestyle appeal – Coastal living, beaches, national parks and a relaxed regional lifestyle make the area particularly appealing to seachange and tree-change buyers.
Employment opportunities and amenities
– Growth in local industries, retail centres and health, education and Government services drive demand from families and professionals seeking both work and lifestyle balance.
Interest rates and borrowing capacity –When rates are lower, more buyers can afford to enter the market or bid higher, increasing competition for Coffs Coast properties.

UNDERSTANDING PROPERTY VALUES ON THE COFFS COAST
Investor interest – The region’s strong rental market and consistent capital growth attract investors, adding another layer of demand.
Key supply factors
Availability of housing stock – Limited supply of quality homes in desirable coastal suburbs such as Sapphire Beach, Korora and Sawtell etc can push prices higher when buyer demand is strong. The great diving range tightly hugs the Coffs Coast restricting supply.
New housing developments – Land releases and new estates in areas like Bonville, North Boambee, Moonee and Woolgoolga etc help balance demand, but also create variation in pricing across the region.
A property’s value sits within a range influenced by buyer budget and motivation, seller situation and expectations as well as market conditions at the time of sale.
by buyer budget and motivation, seller situation and expectations as well as market conditions at the time of sale. Factors such as presentation, competition between buyers, recent comparable sales, the agency you select and even timing of the sale campaign given the state of the economy and interest rates etc can all make a difference. For example, a well-marketed home in a sought-after Coffs Harbour street may attract multiple offers and sell above expectations, while the same property marketed in a quieter period may achieve a more modest result. The post COVID demand hit on the Coffs Coast was a classic example of changing market conditions and timing factors.
Renovation and redevelopment activity –
Older homes being renovated or redeveloped into higher-value dwellings influence supply by changing the quality and style of properties available.
Seasonal listing patterns – Supply can fluctuate across the year, with more listings often coming to market in spring and early summer, affecting competition levels.
Why property is worth a range of values
A property’s value is not fixed to one exact number. Instead, it sits within a range influenced
Looking ahead
As the Coffs Coast continues to grow in popularity, demand and supply factors will remain closely watched by both buyers and sellers. Understanding that a property is worth a range of values, shaped by demand drivers such as migration, lifestyle appeal and affordability, and supply factors like housing availability and new developments, gives a clearer picture of how the local market works. Ultimately, value is established where demand and supply meet at the time of sale.

2025 HIA
NORTHERN NSW HOUSING, KITCHEN & BATHROOM AWARDS
Presented by SGA
Northern NSW Branch Manager
We SGA HIA Northern NSW Awards celebrate the innovation and cra smanship driving the region’s residential building scene. In 2025, builders, designers, and trades continued to li the bar despite tough conditions. We caught up with Glen Cassidy to chat standout projects, judging insights, and the trends shaping the future of home design in Northern NSW.
hat moments best captured the spirit of this year’s program?
This year’s awards celebrated the craftsmanship and innovation of our members in Northern NSW. As we continue to experience skilled trade shortages, challenging economic pressures, ever changing legislative and regulatory (red tape) requirements, our members continue to persevere to complete some incredible projects in this beautiful and diverse region of ours. To answer your question, the spirit was perseverance to deliver stunning homes in very challenging times. The energy in the room on the night reflected pride in regional excellence and a shared commitment to raising the bar.
How do you keep standards high across such breadth of categories? Consistency is achieved through rigorous judging criteria and experienced panels. Each category, whether Custom Built, Townhouse, Outdoor Project
or Additions/Renovation, is assessed using tailored rubrics that balance workmanship, design, sustainability, and innovation. Judges undergo briefing sessions to ensure alignment, and site visits provide firsthand insight into quality.
What qualities help a regional winner succeed at state and national level?
Translatability hinges on three things: clarity of design intent, execution excellence, and sustainability. Projects like Rice Construction Group’s winning home demonstrates how thoughtful planning, high-performance materials, and lifestyle alignment can resonate beyond regional boundaries. Strong documentation and photography also play a
key role in showcasing projects effectively at higher levels.
Does Northern NSW’s geography influence design or construction approaches?
e spirit was perseverance to deliver stunning homes in very challenging times. e energy in the room on the night reflected pride in regional excellence and a shared commitment to raising the bar.
Absolutely. From coastal humidity to hinterland slopes, geography shapes everything from material selection to layout. Timber cladding, polished concrete, and passive solar design are common responses to climate and terrain. Builders are increasingly embracing siteresponsive architecture, as seen in homes that blend into bushland or maximise ocean views.
How did judging weightings play out among this year’s standouts? Workmanship remained the cornerstone, but design effectiveness and sustainability were decisive in
GLEN CASSIDY
categories like Green Smart and Custom Built. Innovation and visual appeal helped elevate entries alike. The best entries excelled across all four pillars.
What logistics or best practices ensure fair site assessments?
Judging runs from June to August, with HIA staff coordinating schedules and ensuring builders or project managers are present on-site. Clear communication with homeowners, punctuality, and thorough preparation allows judges to follow a structured checklist to maintain consistency across diverse locations and project types.

resolution images. Clear descriptions of design intent and challenges also help judges understand the project’s merit.
What are common submission pitfalls, and quick fixes for first-time entrants? The most frequent issues include missing documentation (e.g., occupancy certificates), poor-quality photos, and unclear project pricing. First-time entrants should use HIA’s entry checklist, ensure all plans match the finished build, and upload at least 15 high-
Which sustainability strategies impressed judges most this cycle? In the GreenSmart category, judges were drawn to passive design principles, high-efficiency insulation, and integrated solar systems. GJ Gardner Homes Tamworth Region’s winning entry featured rainwater harvesting, thermal mass optimisation, and envelope detailing that reduced energy demand. These strategies reflect a growing shift toward lifecycle-conscious building. What pushed Rice Construction Group
from finalist to winner? Their winning home combined architectural clarity with lifestyle adaptability. Features like a frontfacing kitchen, rear concert room, and art-gallery hallway were not just aesthetic choices, they reflected the clients’ passions. Hydronic heating, full-height glazing, and timber cladding created a warm, luxurious atmosphere. The judges noted the alignment between design, execution, and long-term livability.
What evolutions can entrants expect next year? Sustainability will continue to gain emphasis, especially in envelope detailing and lifecycle performance. Expect refinements in judging rubrics to better capture innovation and client-centric design. Entrants should also prepare for increased competition as regional winners aim for national recognition.

CAWARDWINNING 2025 HIA PROJECT
Known for cra smanship, creativity, and a grounded approach to building, Sawtell Building Co has made its mark again, this time with a prestigious 2025 HIA Northern NSW Award. We caught up with owner Sonny Kennedy.
ongratulations on your HIA win! What made this project stand out to the judges?
Thanks! I’d like to think our craftsmanship and Jolie from J.E. Design Studio’s vision was key but it’s more than a house, it’s a contemporary family home that really captures the essence of Australian coastal living.
Every great build has a story. What was your vision from concept to completion?
At SBCo, the goal is never to just build a house, we build a home and a lifestyle. We met Steve and Annie early, when they were still buying their block. Steve loved what we were about and stayed in touch. From day one we were aligned on creating a relaxed, durable, family-first home.
Craftsmanship is central to SBCo. How do you keep standards so high across projects?
I have high expectations and I’m fine with that. Strong client relationships drive quality. We’ve got two solid apprentices and a tight
crew of trusted trades who understand our benchmarks and respect the finish we’re chasing.
Collaboration defines success. Who were the key contributors on this build?
Jolie (J.E. Design Studio) was the project’s visionary, brilliant and easy to work with. We keep it local and niche: Park Beach Plumbing, JK Electrical & Data, TJB Excavations, Sam Kerr Plastering, Liscrete Concreting, and Plumbe Joinery. Reliable partners make all the difference.
How are design and sustainability shaping your work today?
Massively! We’re currently building a passive home in Sawtell with Sacha from Walknorth Architects. Sustainability is woven into almost every decision. I’m enjoying learning different methods we’ll carry into future builds, better envelopes, smarter orientation, and material choices that last.
What does HIA recognition mean for you and the team, personally and professionally?
It’s appreciated. In a small town, your
reputation is everything. Recognition validates the effort our whole team and trades put in and gives clients confidence they’re in safe hands.
What’s next for Sawtell Building Co? Any exciting projects on the horizon?
We’ve got a special build starting in Sawtell next year, great clients again and a stellar design from a respected local architect. It’s the kind of project that keeps the team energised and sharp.
How can people get in touch?
I’m a bit old-school, phone or email is best.

Interested in building a home that feels like the Coffs Coast? Sawtell Building Co brings together craftsmanship, collaboration and community to deliver spaces built for real life.
What inspired SGA Architectural Window Solutions to become the naming rights sponsor of the 2025 HIA Northern NSW Awards? We wanted to give back to the local HIA, who support the builders in our region. Obviously, without sponsorship, it is difficult to put on events such as this which recognise our amazing local builders. Many of whom we are very privileged to work with. How does supporting the HIA Awards align with SGA’s values and vision for the building and design industry? At SGA, we believe in championing excellence, innovation, and integrity across every aspect of our work.
The HIA Awards celebrate exactly these qualities. By supporting the Awards, we’re not only acknowledging the achievements of our peers but also reinforcing our commitment to elevating industry standards and encouraging continuous improvement. We see this partnership as an opportunity to contribute to a culture of collaboration, creativity, and responsible building practices.
SGA
What role do you think events like the HIA Awards play in driving innovation and quality across the construction sector? These events recognise projects and professionals who set new benchmarks in design, sustainability, and craftsmanship. They help raise the bar amongst builders in our community. There is no reason why someone from Regional Northern NSW couldn’t get the same quality of finishes (if not better) and the latest building and design features as someone from any major city.
ARCHITECTURAL WINDOW SOLUTIONS
SGA has a strong reputation for craftsmanship and design. How does this partnership help showcase the brand’s commitment to excellence? It allows SGA to showcase our commitment to excellence in craftsmanship and design. The Awards celebrate the same values that define our work — innovation, quality, and attention to detail. We love seeing builders in our region getting recognition for all their hard work - even better when their winning project used SGA windows! It’s a win for us and the builder.
