It is the case that has fascinated. On 29 July 2023 in Leongatha, a small town in rural Victoria, family and friends of local woman Erin Patterson sit down for Sunday lunch. On the menu, Beef Wellington. The next day, four of the guests are hospitalised. Doctors suspect death cap mushroom poisoning. Within a week, three of them will be dead. Did Patterson deliberately poison her estranged husband’s parents, aunt and uncle? Was the lunch a recipe for murder? Not guilty, she declared to the court. A jury of her peers have now decided the answer to those two questions.

THE CHYC COLLECTIVE

Hayley Young has built THE CHYC COLLECTIVE INTO SO MUCH MORE THAN A FASHION BOUTIQUE, IT’S A MOVEMENT FOR REAL WOMEN, REAL BODIES, AND REAL STORIES. As she celebrates a bold new chapter and a brand-new store in Port Macquarie, Hayley shares how style, strength, and self-belief have shaped her journey.

i Hayley. Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to open your own store?
My journey’s been anything but straight and narrow, more like a scenic route with a few detours, flat tyres, and spontaneous dance breaks. I lost my Dad right at that pointy, messy age of my teens and honestly, it sent me into a few colourful chapters of life. I think for a long time I didn’t believe I deserved to really chase my dreams, I just did what you’re meant to do. You know, the “responsible” checklist: get the job, buy the house, work the 9–5, tick the boxes, but deep down I always knew I wanted more. I wanted to create, to connect and do something that made women feel good.
I’ve been a young Mum, I’ve been broken, and I’ve been both a size 22 and a size 10 so I know the full rollercoaster of womanhood. Hormones, pregnancy, postpartum; the whole beautiful, chaotic journey of trying to recognise yourself in the mirror again.
One morning I woke up and said to my husband, “I’m doing it. This dream’s been sitting on my heart for too long.” There was a little shopfront that had been for lease forever, I took it as a sign and jumped in headfirst. You’ve built something really special here in Port Macquarie, what prompted this move to the new shop and what’s new about this chapter for Chyc Collective?
Opening the store wasn’t about clothes, really it was about creating a space for women to feel seen. When I rebranded from The Curve Collective to The CHYC Collective, it wasn’t just a name change, it was an evolution.
I’d noticed that some women thought the store was only for curve-sized ladies and that was never my intention. I wanted to build something that felt inclusive in every way, something for every woman. Whether you’re a size 6 or a 26, whether you’re chasing toddlers or cocktails, you deserve to walk into a store that feels like it’s for you. This new space and direction reflect that
inclusivity. We’ve introduced new high-end brands, but the goal isn’t to exclude anyone, it’s to offer something for everyone. There’s something for the woman who loves to invest in timeless pieces she’ll wear forever, the woman who wants to grab one or two beautiful things that make her feel put together and the woman who just loves discovering unique pieces that don’t break the budget.
And honestly.. I own a boutique store but I can’t wear a $300 shirt most days because, well, I’m a Mum of boys! They’d wipe Vegemite fingers on it before I even left the house. So I wanted The CHYC Collective to cater to all of us, the everyday women who juggle life, love and laundry, but still want to feel confident and stylish.
The rebrand and this new chapter have been about closing that gap, between high-end fashion and real life, between exclusivity and authenticity. It’s about creating a space where women can walk in, take a deep breath and think, “Finally, this feels like me.”

People o en see the pre y side, but behind it all, there have been some really tough seasons. Running a business while raising four boys is not for the fainthearted.
Every small business has its share of ‘blood, sweat, and tears’. What have been some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned along the way?
Sam and I have built everything we have completely from the ground up. No silver spoons, no handouts, just pure grit, hard work, late nights, early mornings and a whole lot of stubborn belief that we could make something beautiful out of nothing. People often see the pretty side, but behind it all, there have been some really tough seasons. Running a business while raising four boys is not for the faint-hearted. The mum-guilt is real, and marriage? Well, being business partners and life partners is not for the weak either!
I think one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned

is that no one really knows what they’re doing, they’re scared too, but doing it anyway.
Another big one has been learning to ask for help. As women, we often think we have to do it all; be the boss, the mum, the wife, the cleaner, the everything, but burnout is not a badge of honour. Building a business and a life you love takes community, and I’m so grateful for mine. Also, I’ve learned that spreadsheets are not my love language, council paperwork will test your sanity and sometimes the best business decisions come from trusting your faith, not Google.
But maybe the biggest lesson of all has been this; it’s okay to evolve. You don’t have to have it all together or know exactly where you’re headed, you just have to keep moving. Every mistake, every messy season, every “what the hell am I doing?” moment has taught me something.
Continued over...

Your husband, your boys, and your friends have been a big part of your journey, how important has their support been in building Chyc Collective?
I don’t have a large circle of friends but I’ve got the good ones, the quality kind. e ones who love hard, laugh loud and don’t run when life gets messy, and that’s the best kind of friendship you can ask for.

Honestly, they’re everything. None of this would exist without them, they’re the heartbeat behind it all. Sam has been my rock from day one. We’ve built so much together, not just the shop but a life that’s full of love, chaos and a shared dream to show our boys what’s possible when you work hard and believe in yourself. My boys are my why. They might not realise it now, but everything I do is for them. I want them to see that their Mum chased her dreams, that she built something from scratch and that they can too, whatever path they choose.
And my friends, they’ve seen the messy behind-the-scenes moments and they still show up with a smile (and often a bottle of wine). I don’t have a large circle of friends but I’ve got the good ones, the quality kind. The ones who love hard, laugh loud and don’t run when life gets messy, and that’s the best kind of friendship you can ask for.
Chyc Collective isn’t just about clothes, what’s your philosophy when it comes to

fashion and self-expression?
For me, fashion has never been about trends, it’s about how something makes you feel. It’s about finding those pieces that make you walk a little taller and see yourself the way everyone who loves you already does. Fashion is self-expression, it’s how we tell the world who we are without saying a word. Some days that’s jeans and a tee, other days it’s a Rebecca Vallance dress and heels and sometimes it’s pyjamas and a messy bun and honestly, all of those are perfectly okay. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what size you wear, there’s a place for you here. If I can help even one woman walk out feeling like herself again, confident, comfortable and connected, then that’s the real win.
The dress hire side of your business adds a really accessible, sustainable touch. What inspired you to include that service?
The dress hire side came from two things, wanting women to feel amazing without the guilt; and the fact that most of us have at least one expensive dress we will never wear again, sitting in the back of the wardrobe collecting dust. You shouldn’t have to spend a fortune to look incredible or feel confident. It also came from a love of sustainability.

Fashion shouldn’t have to cost the planet. Hiring allows us to enjoy beautiful, highend pieces in a smarter way, it’s community based fashion. The same dress might make five different women feel stunning in five completely different ways and I think that’s really special.

Some days that’s jeans and a tee, other days it’s a Rebecca Vallance dress and heels and sometimes it’s pyjamas and a messy bun and honestly, all of those are perfectly okay.

And, as a Mum, I know what it’s like. We’re the ones who’ll happily spend $200 on their footy gear but feel guilty spending it on ourselves. Dress hire gives women permission to say, “I deserve this,” without the financial hangover.
It’s that perfect blend of luxury and practicality, a way for women to access beautiful designer pieces, be kinder to the planet and still feel like the main character for the night. What’s next for Chyc Collective; any more exciting plans, collaborations, or goals on the horizon?
Oh, always!
Right now, the focus is on really cementing this new chapter for CHYC Collective,
continuing to build our designer dress hire, expanding our high-end but inclusive fashion range and growing our incredible community of women. I’m excited to keep bringing in beautiful new brands and exploring some creative collaborations that align with our values: style, sustainability and inclusivity.
I’d also love to lean more into events, styling sessions, women’s nights and collaborations with other local businesses. There’s so much power in connection.
And personally? My goal is to keep chasing that tricky little thing called balance; to really start focusing on my heart for women, with my podcast “Hear Her Heart”; to make time for more beach days, family adventures and moments that fill my cup. Because at the end of the day, I built all of this to create a life we could actually live.
Thanks Hayley.

An Ocean Pool means
• A safe, free and all-abilities place to swim
• A new attraction that boosts pride and local tourism
• A lasting legacy for future generations
Across NSW, ocean pools are part of the coastal lifestyle — and you deserve the same. That’s what an Ocean Pool will bring to Port Macquarie — but without community support, we risk losing this once-in-a-generation opportunity.
Despite 90% of locals supporting the idea, local approvals are challenging even though:
• Federal funding will cover construction costs
• The pool delivers $7 in community benefits for every $1 of Council investment
• The Birpai Traditional Owners have given their support
Right now, the difference between approval and rejection comes down to one thing — your voice.

With an eye for the honest and the in-between, Jade McDonald of Li le Glimpses Photography has spent 15 years capturing life’s most meaningful moments; the laughter, the chaos, and the quiet connection in between. Jade’s story-driven work celebrates the raw beauty of family, love, and the fleeting chapters that make up our lives.

Hinspired your creative vision, how has motherhood shaped the way you see and capture the world through your lens?
At every session, I focus on the feeling of a moment rather than a preconceived idea of what it should look like. e way a li le one touches your face mid-conversation, or the way their nose wrinkles when they are truly laughing, that’s what I’m drawn to.

i Jade. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how Little Glimpses Photography first came to life?
I studied Art and Photography at the National Art School for five years, that’s where my love for photography truly exploded and became my whole world. I was always drawn to the little things that often get overlooked, because I believe they’re actually the big things.
After graduating, I worked as a high school Visual Arts and Photography teacher for many years, while also exhibiting my work both in Sydney and here locally in Port Macquarie. Then, 15 years ago, when I had my first child, I wanted a more flexible, creative lifestyle that allowed me to be present with them, and that’s when Little Glimpses was born. I’ve never looked back.
You mention that your own children

Motherhood completely changed the way I see the world. It made me realise how fleeting every chapter of parenting really is. As my children have grown, I’ve become aware that the everyday moments, the ones that seem ordinary, are actually the most meaningful. The feeling of them climbing onto my lap and wrapping their arms around my neck. My daughter’s wild hair that mirrors her spirit. My son’s snuggly, heartwarming cuddles that you just melt into. Those are the moments I want to hold onto, and naturally, they’re also what I want to capture for others. The authentic, unscripted moments of connection - the laughter, the tenderness, the chaos and calm that make a family’s story unique.
At every session, I focus on the feeling of a moment rather than a preconceived idea of what it should look like. The way a little one touches your face mid-conversation, or the way their nose wrinkles when they are truly laughing, that’s what I’m drawn to.
Have you always had a love for photography, or was it something that grew as you began documenting your own family life?
My Uncle Ray, who was a photographer, gave me my first SLR film camera when I was 15. From then on, I was constantly capturing my friends and family - collecting memories, documenting the everyday. That love deepened when I went on to study photography at art school, where I became obsessed with telling stories through imagery. I was fascinated by building narratives of people and places through glimpses of their world; the subtle, beautiful details that reveal who they are.

changed. I still capture people’s stories through
intimate, authentic moments. Being invited into those spaces and witnessing human connection lights me up inside. It’s a privilege to create images that show people how beautiful their relationships really are and to give them something tangible to remember how it felt.
Your work focuses on those “real and raw” moments. What draws you to those unscripted, in-between times rather than the perfectly posed ones?
The “real and raw” moments are full of emotion. They can be messy, wild, and unpredictable, but they’re honest, and that honesty holds so much beauty.

When my father passed away a few years ago, it profoundly changed how I saw my work. The photos I had of him became my only connection back to those moments we shared. They’re priceless to me now. That experience really cemented why I do what I do, these photographs become portals to moments that can never be recreated. They’re not just pictures; they’re links to feeling, memory, and love.
You specialise in both family and wedding photography. What do you love most about being invited into such personal, milestone moments in people’s lives?

It’s an incredible privilege to see people, to really see them. To capture the way they look at each other, how they hold hands, or the small gestures that show their love in its purest form. Each couple, each family is completely unique, and those subtle moments tell their

story far more powerfully than any posed image ever could. Being trusted to document those milestones and everyday moments; it’s an honour I never take for granted. What’s your approach to helping families or couples feel comfortable enough to let their true selves shine in front of the camera?
Every photo session is a collaboration between me and my clients. It’s always different, always special. My first goal is to create a safe space, somewhere people feel comfortable to open up and just be. Over the years, I’ve learned that when I am vulnerable and open myself, it gives others permission to do the same.

I encourage laughter, play, and genuine interaction rather than rigid posing. When people start to relax into the moment, when they forget about the camera and focus on each other, that’s when the real magic happens. Those are the images that come alive with emotion and authenticity.

chaotic, the deeply real. I want my photographs to be a reminder of how it felt to love and be loved in that time of their life.

What do you hope families feel when they look back at the photos you’ve captured for them?
I hope they feel their story. That they’re taken right back to the warmth, the connection, the love that filled that moment. I want them to see the beauty in their everyday; the imperfect, the

Photography; any new projects, creative goals, or dream shoots on the horizon?
This year marks 15 years of Little Glimpses, which feels incredibly special. It’s been such an honour to capture the evolving stories of my clients over the years, seeing families grow, couples marry, and returning to document their next chapters. That trust and connection have always been the dream.
Looking ahead, I’m continuing to expand into more artistic, emotive wedding and portrait storytelling.. But ultimately, my goal remains the same: to celebrate the beauty in life and to create imagery that feels timeless, honest, and real.

Classically trained artist Bernice Daher began her formal education at the esteemed Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, renowned for its strong focus on traditional drawing and painting techniques. Focus spoke with Port Macquarie local artist Bernice Daher on her passion for the arts, her commitment to her community and all things on her artisticfuelled agenda.

i Bernice, thanks so much for speaking with Focus. You describe yourself as a pastel and acrylics based artist and your work shows such emotive depth and precision. Where do you draw your inspiration?
Thank you Sarah and thank you for having me. Port Macquarie is the perfect spot for inspiration consisting of a diverse landscape including the many beaches surrounding us, the hinterland and lakes and the local wildlife. It is also full of active people walking, jogging, enjoying the beaches, fishing or even just having coffee with friends. All of this is perfect for an artist like me who loves to people watch and absorb what is going on. I will often take my time to sit and sketch in any of these locations. There are days when everything around me just begs to be painted especially amongst this beautiful weather we have been having. When did you first pick up a brush and what is it you love about the craft?
I’ve drawn and painted as far back as I can remember, but it has always been something that was a hobby while I worked and raised a family. Retirement has allowed me to

expand as an artist. I love being able to create something from a blank piece of paper or put what is in my mind onto the page. Sometimes it’s a frustrating struggle and other times it’s very meditative and smooth.

Being artistic or creative for me provides a form of personal expression and therapy and offers a deep sense of satisfaction and purpose. I love to explore identity, share stories, and connect with the world through my art.

You have produced some impressive portraiture work including portraits of famous faces, political figures and archetypes through history including David Gulpilil and Michelangelo’s David. What is your point of view when choosing subjects and how do you hope an audience responds to these works? I think a portrait should always provide
the viewer with something more about the subject than just a physical likeness. I seek to form a connection with the viewer or generate an emotional response to what they’re seeing. The drawing I did of Queen Elizabeth II was done just after she passed away and it was developed with a deep respect of her years of service. I really hope that does come through in the work. Equally, it is always nice when someone views a work I have produced and reflects back to me the sentiments I have tried to put into it. That is indeed satisfying for me as an artist.

Recently you have collaborated with local Forster based author Julia Dunstan and produced the illustrations for her recent book release ‘Seraphim Host and The Last Regatta.’ Can you tell us a little about how you found the collaborative process?
I enjoy working collaboratively with others on a commission. It was easy with Julia as she had very clear ideas on the illustrative look and feel she wanted to achieve with her book, including the placement of artworks on pages, of different works and even the look of the main characters she wanted developed. My first job was to listen to her vision and
then to develop and create the character drawings. Julia and I tossed ideas and thoughts back and forth as I went through the process. Her ideas and suggestions were usually spot on and it was certainly a great opportunity for me to work on a project like this. I think we worked together creatively for about 4 months before the book was published. The book is currently for sale via a number of avenues and you recently held
ARTIST of the MONTH
a book launch with Julia in conjunction with Mid Coast Library in Forster. Can you give us an overview of the story and your response to the text through your powerful illustrations?
It is based in 1939 and tells the story of the last regatta held at Wallis Island. The story focuses on one young lad who works on the sails for many of the boats and his relationship with the main sailmaker and two young lads who join the race.
sails for many of the boats and his relationship

The main challenge for me was the breadth of the illustrations which cover action packed race scenes, peaceful sunsets, community excitement and quite a lot of emotional development through the characters. Developing a style that would suit all these aspects and provide consistency throughout the book was something I really put a lot of effort into.

What have been some of your highlights looking back over your career?
Julia and I tossed ideas and thoughts back and forth as I went through the process. Her ideas and suggestions were usually spot on and it was certainly a great opportunity for me to work on a project like this.
I’ve been fortunate to win a few awards over the years but overall I think being able to provide an artwork that someone loves and that will stay with them over the years is a truly rewarding experience. Can you describe a little about yourself behind the canvas? I am quite heavily involved with the Hastings Valley Fine Art Association here in Port Macquarie and I help manage our gallery in William St. I love to support our community through art. There are a number of talented artists here in the Port Macquarie and Hastings region and we all support one another in our craft.

The Port Macquarie Hastings region offers such a picturesque landscape to forster art and creativity. What is it you love most about living in Port Macquarie?

e main challenge for me was the breadth of the illustrations which cover action packed race scenes, peaceful sunsets, community excitement and quite a lot of emotional development through the characters.
My husband and I moved here from Sydney over 10 years ago and we still spend time travelling back and forth to our adult children and family in Sydney. We love living in this region and have developed many strong friendships since coming here. it is a wonderful place to just chill and enjoy good company. What is on the horizon for you as we head into 2026?
I’m looking forward to being involved in many upcoming exhibitions at our gallery. We change the work over every three months so

the content is always changing and evolving which makes things exciting.
I am also working on upcoming exhibitions at Bonny Hills as well as the Hastings Valley Open Art Prize and an exhibition I am currently preparing at Gladstone that will keep me busy producing new work.
Away from your studio where would we find you spending your own time?
I like getting my exercise out of the way early in the morning either at the gym (Miss Motivator) or a walk along Lighthouse Beach. There are so many lovely restaurants and

coffee shops here and we have our pick of places for lunch or going to a show or movie. I’m also a passionate reader and the options for new books has expanded here in Port over the years as well so I am in my element creatively!
For people wanting to find out more about your work or engage your services, how can they best connect with you?
You can find me via my website bernicedaher. com - I also have Facebook and Instagram pages @bernicedaher or please send me an email at bernicedaher@hotmail.com Thanks Bernice. Interview: Sarah Baker.

Thas become a highlight of our annual family visit and certainly many other families we've spoken with. It's genuinely often the first thing that comes up when you mention Port Macquarie. (Sydney Visitor October 2025).
Three years ago, Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail was a founding partner in the Monopoly Port Macquarie Edition, featuring an exclusive Hello Koalas sculpture token.
Hello Koalas aim was to raise funds to build a Big Koala, 2.5 metres high, for the new visitor experience in the Cowarra State Forest called “Guulabaa”, which means ‘Place of Koala’ in the local Gathang language.
The community came out in droves to purchase this unique gift for Christmas in 2021 and support the creation of a 2.5 metre iconic public art landmark for Greater Port Macquarie known as ‘The Big Koala, Spirit of All Koalas’.
Many Monopoly collectors from around Australia and the world also applied for a copy of the Port Macquarie Monopoly through the Hello Koalas online store (shop.hellokoalas. com).
Over several years, over 1,000 copies have been sold with all proceeds supporting the creation and development of The Big Koala and its conservation projects including a
children’s book to be published in 2026.
Hello Koalas recognises the vital support of Regional Australia Bank in the making of The Big Koala, and, Forestry Corporation of NSW which provided the location, timber plinth and landscaped garden in the Cowarra State Forest.
Painted by local artist, Pauline Roods and manufactured by local industrial artist John Belfield, The Big Koala was unveiled at Guulabaa in September 2022, along with the opening of WildNets, now a major tourist attraction for our region.
In 2023 The Big Koala won Gold for “Best Landmark Sculpture in Australia” in the Australian Street Art Awards.
A facial cast of this super-sized koala is featured at the Hello Koalas Gallery + Gift Shop (2/1A Blackbutt Road, Port Macquarie) where people can find exclusive ‘Big Koala’ gifts including 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles, coasters, magnets, badges, postcards, lens cloths, T shirts, organic cotton T towels and tote bags, with more on the way for Christmas shopping.
‘The Big Koala’ is also featured in the special Hello Koalas merchandise range, which profiles all 91 sculptures on the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail. These exclusive souvenirs include the popular Hello Koalas Colouring Book, 2026 Calendars, Tote Bags, T towels in cotton or microfibre, jigsaw puzzles, mouse
pads, notebooks, artbooks, T shirts.
You will also find the longstanding Port Macquarie Monopoly edition and now the brand new Monopoly game – ‘Big Things Australia’, which has its own koala token too.
Hello Koalas Gallery + Gift Shop, open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, gives locals and visitors an inspiring and unique experience of walking amongst a display of over 30 Hello Koalas sculptures and taking photos to share with family and friends. Pick up the complimentary Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail Guide + Map to assist in taking part in this exciting cultural tourism adventure.
The creator of the Hello Koalas project, Margret Meagher is present most days to welcome people and provide enlightening information about the award-winning Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail which won Gold for ‘Best Tourist Attraction’ in the 2022 NSW Tourism Awards.
Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail has been recognised in 37 tourism and business awards since its launch in September 2014.
‘The value of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail is an investment in the town's identity and a commitment to preserving a highly successful, community-led, and internationally recognised tourism experience. Port Macquarie would not be the same without it.’ (Sydney Visitor October 2025).

First time director Wil Ferguson and his team are excited to present the smash hit musical adaptation of Billy Elliot. Based on the successful British film and with songs by Elton John, it is a simple story about a boy who loves to dance, set in a mining town during Thatcher-era northern England of the 1980s. Sure to be another smash for The Players Theatre, rounding out a huge year of great shows, the incredible cast, band and crew have been working hard for several months, and no more than our special guest choreographer Darren McIntyre, who was happy to share his thoughts on the production.
“It has been an inspiring, fun and real team effort being a part of the choreographic team with Kirsty Day & Natalie Travis on the Port Macquarie Players Theatre production of Billy Elliot. For me it was a full circle having had my first ever on stage experience
at the Players back in 1988! To now return as Guest Choreographer after a 27 year international career, to help re-stage the iconic Peter Darling choreography in a musical which somewhat resembles in many similarities my story, was very special for me.
The biggest challenge was definitely finding a cast up for the challenge, and our community delivered a talented group of performers that are excelling in their interpretations and found their groove. It was so rewarding to see the cast working diligently to achieve the task at hand and I am so proud of what we accomplished. To all those young artists out there who have the dream, reach for the stars as you may very well become one, no matter where you are from, you can achieve it!” Billy Elliot The Musical opens 21st Nov - tickets now on sale. Groups discounts available.

MARINE RESCUE

an you tell us a bit about the role of a radio operator with Marine Rescue Port Macquarie and what a typical shift looks like?
Radio operators manage the radio base 24 hours a day to provide a lifeline for those who are in need of assistance. Their training enables them to be able to react and adapt

As one of the dedicated volunteers behind the mic at Marine Rescue Port Macquarie, Karen Barber plays a vital role in keeping our waterways safe. With nearly 14 years of service, Karen shares what it’s like managing radio operations around the clock, the importance of communication on the water, and her top safety tips as we head into the busy summer boating season.
to any situation requiring assistance which can possibly be life threatening.
In addition, I am one of the Watch Officers who are available if the radio operators need extra assistance in a difficult search and rescue operation. We never know what to expect on a shift

as it can vary from a very quiet time to something like one of my recent overnight shifts with 8 hours of radio communication during a complicated search and rescue operation.
We never know what to expect on a shi as it can vary from a very quiet time to something like one of my recent overnight shi s with 8 hours of radio communication during a complicated search and rescue operation.
For readers who might not be familiar, what is Marine Rescue NSW and what services does the Port Macquarie unit provide to local and visiting boaters?
Marine Rescue Port Macquarie is the largest of the 45 bases covering the entire NSW coast ‘Saving Lives on the Water’. We are also a HUB at night, monitoring all the

bases from the Queensland border to Forster Tuncurry and out to Lord Howe Island - 16 in total.
How important is the role of radio communication when it comes to keeping people safe on the water?

our members from diverse backgrounds who are able to keep our base and all its technology running smoothly, 24 hours a day. It is almost like a family, as we look after each other - it comes down to three valuable things we can have - friendship, optimism and kindness.

The improvements we have had in technology over the years have given us different ways of accurately pinpointing the location of a vessel in distress. However, radio communication is vital to enable us to stay in contact with rescue vessels, distress vessels and when needed, aircraft that may be involved in a search and rescue operation.
Marine Rescue is largely made up of volunteers. How long have you been involved, and what do you find most rewarding about the work you do?
My best advice would just be to take care of your vessel, yourselves and those with you, but know we are there if you need us.
I have been a member of Marine Rescue for almost 14 years. I began at Marine Rescue Crowdy Harrington and recently transferred to Marine Rescue Port Macquarie.
It is quite humbling to be able to help get those in trouble on the water back to dry land safely.
It is also wonderful to work and train with
As we head into the warmer months and the waterways get busier, what are some of the key safety messages you’d like the community to keep in mind? Certainly checking fuel supplies and battery health and the wearing of lifejackets would be right up there. It is also important that the vessel is in good working order. Knowing how to use a VHF radio is a valuable skill and our trainers run courses for our Radio Club Members and members of the public.
What are some of the most common mistakes or oversights you see from boaters during the summer season? All the things I have said before but some problems cannot be prepared for such as medical episodes or collision with submerged objects. My best advice would just be to take care of your vessel, yourselves and those with you, but know we are there if you need us.
Can you explain how boaters can “log on” and “log off” with Marine Rescue and why that simple step can make such a big difference in an emergency?
Boaters are encouraged to log on with us either on VHF channel 16 or on the Marine Rescue NSW App as they leave for their outing - telling us where they are going, how many are going, their contact information, their vessel registration and when they expect to return.
Each base also has a Radio Club for locals to make logging on much easier as their important information is stored in our system. We also hold get togethers for our Radio Club Members. It is important to remember to log off when they return so we don’t need to start a search and rescue operation. Simply put, it is a ‘needle in a haystack’ situation. If things go wrong, we are able to find a vessel much more quickly and efficiently if we have an idea of where to start looking… The ocean is a very big place!
Marine Rescue Port Macquarie recently received an award for a difficult rescue back in May, what does it mean to the team to receive this kind of recognition? Receiving awards such as this validates everything we do. We do not expect a ‘pat on the back’, but it shows that all the training we do is valuable and what we do is appreciated and recognised as worthwhile.
Thanks Karen.

i Ysaac. When did you first pick up a basketball, and what made you fall in love with the game?
I started playing basketball when I was 10 years old. Coming from a Filipino heritage that loves basketball, the game has always been part of my life. My Dad played basketball as a varsity player in his younger days, and so did my uncles on both sides of the family. It feels like basketball runs in our blood. It has also become a special bond between my Dad, and my younger brother Zeke, who also plays representative basketball. What first drew me to the game was the fast pace, the adrenaline rush, and the excitement of the game. Over time, I also came to love the friendships I’ve made through basketball and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a team.
Playing for the Port Macquarie Dolphins since 2020 has been a big part of your
journey. How has representing your hometown shaped you as a player?
Representing the Port Macquarie Dolphins and my hometown has shaped me into the player I am today. It has taught me the value of hard work, discipline, trust, support, and pride. Wearing the Dolphins jersey gives me a strong sense of responsibility, knowing that I’m not just playing for myself but also for my community.
You’ve played across local comps, men’s division, and representative squads, how have these different experiences helped you grow?
Playing in different divisions and teams has been a huge part of my growth as a player. Each level has challenged me in new ways, which pushes me to improve my skills and adapt to faster, more skilled opponents. It has forced me to make smarter decisions on the court and taught me how to read the game better. Experiencing a variety of playing styles and team dynamics has helped me
develop versatility. More importantly, it has strengthened my mental toughness, teaching me how to handle pressure, stay focused, and bounce back from setbacks. These lessons have shaped me not just as a player, but as a better teammate too.
What was it like being selected for the North Coast Academy Elite Squad All Stars?
Being selected for the North Coast Academy and making it to the Elite Squad All Stars was a proud moment for me. It pushed me to elevate my game and reminded me that hard work pays off. Playing alongside other elite athletes motivated me to set higher standards for myself and continue striving to improve.
How has training with Joflow Basketball Academy since 2024 pushed you to the next level?
Training with Joflow Basketball Academy in Sydney since 2024 has been a game-changer for me. Their structured programs, skilled coaching, and high-intensity sessions have
challenged me to refine every aspect of my game. I’ve developed better decision-making, stronger endurance, and sharper skills. Joflow has also reinforced the importance of consistency, leadership, and discipline. It hasn’t just shaped me as a more complete player, it’s helped me grow as a person. You’ve had an incredible run of tournaments recently, from Singapore to Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, and Korea. What are some highlights from those tournaments?
Competing in tournaments with Joflow Academy has been an amazing experience, full of unforgettable memories:
• Singapore – 11th Asia Pacific Cup, 2024 (3rd Runner-Up, U16’s Boys)
• Adelaide – Easter Classic, 2025 (First RunnerUp, U18 Boys)
• Melbourne – Nunawading Tournament, 2025
• Canberra – NAIDOC Warriors Tournament, 2025 (Champions, U19 Boys)
• Korea – 12th Asia Basketball Club Tournament, Summer League ABCT (Champions, U16 Boys)

Long term, if given the chance, I see basketball taking me on a journey full of growth and opportunity. I’d love to keep developing my skills while competing at the highest levels.
Each tournament tested me in different ways, but they all contributed to shaping me into a stronger, smarter, and more resilient player.
What’s it like to travel and compete internationally at your age?
Travelling and competing internationally at my age has been incredible. It’s exciting but also challenging, because you’re playing against top players from different countries with different styles and strategies. These experiences have helped me learn new skills and widened my understanding of the game. But the trips weren’t just about basketball, they were about representing my team and country with pride, learning about other cultures, and growing both on and off the court.
What’s a typical training week like for you right now?
A typical training week for me involves at least two hours of practice every day. Sometimes that’s at the indoor stadium or PCYC, and other times it’s on an outdoor court. If I can’t get out, I’ll use our garage for ball-handling drills or a silent ball inside the house. I also hit the gym at least twice a week to work on strength, conditioning and fitness. On Mondays I play in the men’s domestic division, and on Wednesdays I compete in the U18 division.
Long term, where do you see basketball taking you? Is the dream to go pro, play college ball overseas, or something else?
Long term, if given the chance, I see basketball taking me on a journey full of growth and opportunity. I’d love to keep developing my skills while competing at the highest levels. Whether that means playing college basketball
It's exciting but also challenging, because you're playing against top players from different countries with different styles and strategies.
overseas or using the game to open doors for educational opportunities, I’m ready to embrace it. At the same time, I’d love to pursue a career in radiography, so basketball could be the pathway that helps me achieve both my sporting and academic goals. With all these, I really want to thank my parents and family that have always been there supporting me with my love for basketball.
What opportunities have you had at St. Joseph’s Regional College that you feel have strengthened your skills or confidence on the basketball court?
At SJRC I’ve had incredible opportunities that have strengthened both my skills and confidence. Since Year 7, I’ve been able to represent my year level in basketball, playing in zones and interschool competitions. The teachers have always been supportive and passionate about extracurricular activities, which has motivated me to keep giving my best. I’m grateful to SJRC for the opportunities, encouragement, and belief in my journey.
Thanks Ysaac.

Florence Jones has become a much-loved spot for both locals and visitors alike, a place where great wine, fine cheese, and warm hospitality come together in perfect harmony. Since opening its doors in 2023, Florence Jones has built a loyal following thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, quality offerings, and strong connection to the community.

Florence jones is a favourite among so many locals and visitors to our area, what have you enjoyed most about owning and running this business over the last few years?
We have learnt so much over the last few years since creating and running Florence Jones. Some of the things we have enjoyed most are the great relationships we have established with the community as well as sharing our love of wine and cheese.
What’s been the biggest challenge in running a small business?
We pride ourselves on staying relevant and competitive, so it’s always disappointing to find some of the bigger supermarket and bottle shop chains selling products at a cheaper price. You recently ran a High Cheese event with
celebrity chef Anna Polyviou, tell us about the event. What was the highlight of the event, and do you think you will host something like this again?
The High Cheese event with Anna ran over two sittings, one on Saturday and one on Sunday and they were both fantastic. Anna was so amazing and gave so much of her time to each and every customer over the two days of the event. The food was fabulous, and it was such a privilege for us to host her at Florence Jones. She did say she would be back next year and yes, we have a few different
We have changed several things to be more time efficient, but what we haven’t changed is our dedication to quality and the customer experience at Florence Jones. You will always find a little something new, a new cheese, a different wine, another event.
functions and events in the works… stay tuned! Since opening the doors back in 2023 can you tell us how the business has changed and what you have added to keep it up to date and a must visit for all?
When we opened in 2023, we just went with what we knew at the time. Over the last two years we have both learned so much. We have changed several things to be more time efficient, but what we haven’t changed is our dedication to quality and the customer experience at Florence Jones. You will always find a little something new, a new

cheese, a different wine, another event. What is something you’ve learned since opening the doors that you didn’t expect?
Moving from Melbourne to open Florence Jones has been a huge learning curve. What was most unexpected though, was the support offered by the community living in a regional town. When the shop flooded earlier this year we were so humbled by the offerings of support and help. Customers brought us in dinner and showed up rubber gloves in hand to help clean up. For those who have not experienced all that Florence Jones has to offer, please give us a little run down of what customers can expect?
You will have the opportunity to eat some fine cheese, both International and Australian, drink wine that you may not have tried before, either by the glass or bottle. There are local beers available, sensational condiments and all the other goodies that make up a plate to share with your beverage of choice. You can also ask us for guidance if unsure of any selections, we love to help. We are a bottle shop and almost everything we put on the plate is available for purchase – including the boards and knives! We are dog friendly, (we did name our business after our dog), and they are catered for also. I’ve read that more than a third of Australians prefer wine recommendations

over choosing one themselves, how do you help a customer who’s not sure what they want?
We have a wide selection of wines in the shop to cater to lots of different palates. If people aren’t sure, or want our assistance, we generally ask them what they normally like to drink and then work on something similar. We want to build customers confidence and be happy about them exploring their palates.
Our favourite pairing is the classic blue and sweet wine. In particular, Roquefort, a creamy sheep’s milk blue with a glass of Sauternes. The guilty pleasure is a triple cream cheese called Brillat Savarin matched with a French champagne.
What’s your all-time favourite wine and cheese pairing and what’s the one that’s a guilty pleasure?
Our favourite pairing is the classic blue and sweet wine. In particular, Roquefort, a creamy sheep’s milk blue with a glass of Sauternes. The guilty pleasure is a triple cream cheese called Brillat Savarin matched with a French champagne.
With the ‘silly’ season pretty much upon us, what are your plans over the next few months? Will you be offering Christmas parties and New Year’s Eve functions? Christmas always comes around quickly and we are already preparing for various gift options and hampers. You can create your own hampers
or give us a price and we’ll make it up for you. We also have premade to make it just a little easier and gift vouchers also.
We are already taking bookings for various Christmas functions. We can cater to up to 70 people and offer packages that include grazing platters, which can also include a complimentary drink.
We will be closed for a few days over both the Christmas and New Year week to allow ourselves a breather and to get ready for 2026. New Year’s Eve is when we like to celebrate with family and friends - a night off to enjoy some wine and cheese.
Last but not least, how can our readers book a table at Florence Jones?
We take bookings for groups of 8 or more. We like to keep the space casual and manageable so everyone can have a great experience. For functions, parties, or events of 30+ people we will close, and Florence Jones will be all yours. For bookings and enquires either pop in and see us Shop 4/74 Clarence St – down near the river, call 0475 740 621, DM our Instagram account @_florencejones_ or email us hello@florencejones.com.au.

Sometimes things end up being way more complicated than you imagined they would be. Making plans to catch up with friends, online shopping, performing any kind of maintenance on household appliances and haircuts.
You name it, there’s a multitude of supposedly easy breezy that somehow morphs into all kinds of giant headache producing stuff on a daily basis. Part of being a human in this time and place I suppose, but that’s how we roll. When it comes to dining out, yep you guessed it – another situation where we thought it would just be a simple case of choosing a dish on a menu with a beverage of some sort to wash it down.
No worries, am I right? After all, that’s precisely why we decided to go out to eat in the first place. Trying to avoid that minefield of decision that is the supermarket, not to mention the other complexities involved with the preparation of a meal plus curveballs involving the opinions of others you may be cooking for in terms of your choice of menu. Aargh stop you say - this is even giving me a headache whilst I type it!
Dining out should indeed not be complicated!
It should be easy, breezy, and one of the few simple pleasures left in the world. Should be – but is it? Certainly, once you get past the decision of what you feel like eating and choose your venue, booking your table and simply turning up is relatively speaking, not too tricky.
Next stop, you’re handed the menu – usually a moment of great anticipation and joy. Because – relief! All you have to do is read through a few options on a page, verbalise your choice and then merely wait a blissful few minutes whilst sipping on a quenching beverage or two for your delicious meal to arrive in front of you.
So simple right? Often times it is, but perhaps not always. Sometimes, opening the menu is like opening a proverbial can of worms in that reading through the options seem more like an exercise in deciphering hieroglyphics or some kind of coding that only a tiny percentage of computer geeks can understand.
It's like you’re reading but the words are jumping all over the page- “Pan-seared linecaught Atlantic protein atop a bed of foraged microgreens, accompanied by a reduction of heirloom nightshade essence and finished

with a drizzle of cold-pressed Mediterranean emulsion”?
Anyone? And sure, guilty as charged here but if you’re going to head down this path, at least know that you will need to provide some translation for those who might only need to know - “Seared Atlantic fish served with mixed greens, tomato sauce, and olive oil”
This is where the slew of dining trends and fads creates somewhat of a monster of its own making, and we risk alienating our diners with too much jargon and accompanying smoke and mirrors.
On a recent overseas trip I was once again reminded of the ability within the vast majority of dining establishments to stick with the basics, not just in terms of how dishes are described on menus, but with the uniformity of what was being proffered at the time – strictly seasonal ingredients across the board, prepared in simple ways that serve to showcase flavours that only need to be coaxed gently to be amazing.
As so often in life, it’s the simple things that are really the best and when it comes to restaurants there’s always a way to be sensational, as well as simple…just have to remember to get back to basics sometimes.

he month that sits right on the edge of spring and summer. The mornings are brighter, the days are warmer, and the air has that unmistakable buzz of change. It’s the time when barbecues start firing up again, the cricket’s on, and fresh produce is absolutely bursting into life across Australia.
After the cooler months, when things can feel a bit limited and heavy, November is the month where colour returns to the fruit and veg aisles. It’s the start of that wonderful stretch of the year where growers are picking like crazy, shelves are full, and prices start to ease thanks to supply finally catching up with demand.
November is one of the most exciting times for fruit lovers with mangoes, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and cherries all kicking off. You walk past a tray of mangoes, and it’s impossible not to stop and breathe in that tropical perfume, it’s the scent of summer holidays and sticky fingers. Northern Australia has been harvesting mangoes for a few months now, and they’re making their way further south. The early Kensington Prides are sweet, juicy, and perfectly golden.
Stone fruit is really finding its rhythm too. Those first nectarines and peaches have that delicate balance of tart and sweet that tells you the season’s just getting started. As we move further into November, the flavour deepens and the sugar levels climb. Cherries are starting to pop up from early regions
like Young and Orange in NSW, and there’s nothing quite like that first bite of the season, glossy, deep red, and full of juice.
Berries are also hitting their stride with strawberries still going strong from Victoria and Queensland, and blueberries are plentiful too. Raspberries and blackberries are trickling in with excellent quality this year. Berries are not just beautiful to look at, they’re like little bursts of sunshine. Full of antioxidants and natural sweetness, they’re a perfect way to brighten your mornings and your mood. While fruit often steals the show, November veggies are just as exciting. Think crisp cucumbers, glossy eggplants, vibrant capsicums, and the first real flush of summer tomatoes. The taste difference between a field-grown tomato and a greenhouse one is like night and day, and by November, the fields are finally coming alive again. Toss them through salads with basil and olive oil, or slice them thick for a proper Aussie burger, that’s summer on a plate.
Zucchini, beans, and corn are all coming in nicely, with prices looking much better than they were a month or two ago. Lettuce, spinach, and rocket are looking lush and fresh thanks to milder weather and consistent rainfall in key growing regions. Load up the salad bowl and get creative, throw in some roasted pumpkin, a handful of fresh herbs, maybe some feta or avocado, and you’ve got a meal that’s as colourful as it is good for you. Speaking of avocado, the transition between varieties continues. Hass are still around in

great numbers, with Shepard season well behind us now. Prices are steady and the quality is excellent - perfect for smashed avo.
On the veggie front, November also signals the winding down of the heavy winter greens like cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli. You’ll still find them, but their season’s tapering off as the heat creeps in. The shift now is towards fresh, lighter eating and nature provides what we crave as the temperature rises.
If you’re into cooking with herbs, basil, mint, coriander and parsley are all thriving and at this time of year, they lift any dish and fill the kitchen with fragrance.
You can still get your hands on late-season apples and pears while also grabbing newseason stone fruit. You can roast root veg for a cosy dinner one night and make a crisp garden salad the next. It’s a month of options and that’s what makes it such a joy for anyone who loves fresh produce.
As the days get longer and brighter, our energy starts to shift too. Fresh fruit and vegetables, full of vitamins, fibre, and natural goodness, really do help you shake off any lingering winter sluggishness.
So, as we roll into November, take a moment to celebrate what’s on offer. Visit Growers Market, support the growers, and fill your basket with colour. From mangoes and cherries to zucchini and basil, this is the time of year when Australian produce shines its brightest. November isn’t just another month on the calendar, it’s the true start of the taste of summer.

hen it comes to heading out to a friend’s place or celebrating a special occasion, there’s one question that always comes up: “What wine should I bring?”. Whether it’s a casual backyard barbecue or a milestone birthday dinner, choosing the right bottle can make you the hero of the evening… and it doesn’t have to be complicated.
The first step is to think about the occasion itself. For something relaxed and social, like a Sunday lunch or a picnic with friends, go for wines that are easy-drinking and crowd-pleasing. A crisp rosé, for example, is always a hit; it’s light, refreshing, and pairs beautifully with everything from cheese platters to fresh salads or barbecued chicken. Our Cassegrain 2025 Seasons Spring Rosé is a personal favourite for these moments; it’s lively, balanced, and doesn’t take itself too seriously - perfect for sharing in good company.
If the gathering is more of a dinner party or celebration, such as an engagement, birthday, or festive season event, you can step things up a little. Look for wines with a touch
more complexity that can complement the food being served. A cool-climate Shiraz or Cabernet Merlot blend is a great choice here: smooth, structured, and versatile enough to pair with red meats, roast vegetables, or rich pasta dishes. Our White Label Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is a classic example: elegant and approachable, but with depth and character that make it stand out on the table.
White wines are equally worthy of celebration.
White wines are equally worthy of celebration.
A Semillon Sauvignon Blanc or Verdelho is bright, fresh, and ideal for seafood, canapés, or lighter fare.
A Semillon Sauvignon Blanc or Verdelho is bright, fresh, and ideal for seafood, canapés, or lighter fare. If you’re not sure what’s on the menu, these styles are a safe bet. They tend to please a wide range of palates. The key is balance: you want something that’s not too heavy, not too sweet, and has enough acidity to keep things lively. And of course, no celebration feels complete without bubbles. A sparkling wine immediately lifts the mood - it’s festive,
elegant, and suits just about any occasion. You don’t need to wait for New Year’s Eve to pop a cork! At Cassegrain, we make our Blanc de Blanc in a fresh, fruit-driven style that’s made for celebrating the everyday as well as the extraordinary. When in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask for advice. A good bottle shop or cellar door team will happily guide you based on your budget and the occasion. Or, if you know the host’s tastes, tailor your choice to them - it’s always thoughtful to bring something they’ll genuinely enjoy.
At the end of the day, wine is about connection - sharing stories, laughter, and moments that bring people together. So next time you’re heading out to celebrate, pick a wine that reflects the mood and the company, and you can’t go wrong.
Cheers, Alex Cassegrain

et’s start with home. Where did you grow up and what is your connection to Wauchope? I am a born and raised Wauchope local. My family have been in the area for generations. I moved away to Queensland when I was in my teenage years and then to Melbourne with my husband in our late 20's, but family brought us home and we are grateful to be so involved with our great community.
You wear quite a few hats! From childcare to construction and solar energy, you’ve built an impressive range of businesses. What drives you to take on such diverse industries? Our businesses are family-run and that’s what makes them strong. It started with my parents’ company, Air Light Insulation and over time we’ve grown into three trade-based construction and electrical businesses, plus a childcare group. My husband and brothers-inlaw are the builders and electricians and my sisters bring their own skills and creativity, and we all work together to back each other, our individual families and the community. You’re also Treasurer of the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce. Why is being part of the Chamber important to you,
and what role do you think it plays in helping local businesses thrive? I struggled for a long time to find my place in the workforce, especially after having kids. I’ve always enjoyed working and thrive on the juggle and balance that comes with it. Being part of the Chamber of Commerce has given me the chance to meet incredible business owners and community members, learn new skills, connect with a mentor and help deliver events that genuinely support our local business community.
e idea came to me one sleepless night during yet another heavy downpour and period of flooding. I remember lying there thinking - how do our farmers keep going?
The inaugural Hastings + Hinterland Town & Country Ball was a massive success, raising over $100,000 for flood-affected farmers. What inspired you to take on the challenge of organising such a big event? The idea came to me one sleepless night during yet another heavy downpour and period of flooding. I remember lying
there thinking - how do our farmers keep going? How many setbacks can they take? Day after day they still show up to work their land and provide the food and produce that sustain our community. I wanted to find a way to give back to them to celebrate their resilience and remind them how valued they are.
You’ve spent a lot of time at The Hastings Hotel recently with the Town & Country Ball planning. What do you think of the renovations, and what does it mean to have a venue like that at the heart of Wauchope? I love it! My favourite part is all the framed historic photos and the fabulous green tiles. It’s a great space to come with family, work or friends and such a great thing for our community to have a gorgeous historic pub right in the heart of town.
Thanks Jesse.

Set amongst 400 acres of breathtaking coastline views, rolling hills and untouched bushland, Haven Ridge is a hidden gem to escape, gather, celebrate within the private eco retreat on the Mid North Coast. Focus recently caught up with proprietors Paul Mansfield and Tamara Grieve to highlight the venue’s busy agenda over summer.
Hi Paul and Tamara, thanks so much for speaking with Focus. Haven Ridge is the perfect space to escape, gather and celebrate. Tell us a little about the hidden gem Haven Ridge.
Thank you Sarah. We’re thrilled to share a little about Haven Ridge. What began as a private family retreat has grown into a destination where people can truly escape, gather and celebrate. We created Haven Ridge for locals to feel like they have a second place to call home with somewhere they can slow down, breathe in the beauty of the landscape, and feel an instant sense of calm the moment they arrive.
Our hope is that everyone leaves feeling a little lighter, more content, and connected to each other and to the space itself.
It’s a place that’s both elevated and down-toearth, where good food, wine and live music come together with nature as the backdrop. From long lunches in The Ridge Room and relaxed sunday sessions, to weddings, retreats
and special events, every experience is about slowing down and enjoying the moment.
Haven Ridge is a hidden pocket of tranquillity, but it’s also alive with community energy, a place for people to come together and make lasting memories
Whether you’re planning a corporate retreat, a family escape, a wedding or a private event, Haven Ridge is strategically designed for each guest to feel at home to explore the eco-boutique retreat offering exclusive access, stunning spaces and a sense of pure tranquility. How do you ensure each event is individually tailored and extraordinary?
Every event at Haven Ridge starts with a conversation. We really take the time to understand what our guests are trying to create. Whether it’s an intimate wedding, a long-table lunch, a corporate retreat or a family celebration, we want it to feel personal and effortless. Because the property has so many unique spaces from the Ridge Room and Barrel Room to the alfresco area and Seaview Lawn, we can tailor
each experience to suit the style and atmosphere people are after. Some love the idea of a relaxed outdoor setting surrounded by nature, others prefer a more refined, indoor celebration. That’s the beauty of Haven Ridge; it’s adaptable but always grounded in that same sense of peace and connection.
We also believe food is at the heart of every great gathering. We don’t work off pre-made menus instead, Chef Dru sits down with each client to curate a menu that’s completely their own. It’s all about capturing their vision, the season, and the mood of the event through flavour and presentation. We work closely with local suppliers, producers, stylists and musicians to bring each event to life.
Our goal is for guests to feel completely taken care of, so they can focus on enjoying the moment while we handle the details behind the scenes.
Summer’s entertainment guide is set to be huge at Haven Ridge for the upcoming season with Sunday sessions and ‘Stay and Play with Us’ events. What is in the works

entertainment-wise coming up?

Your ticket includes entry, a gin cocktail on

We’re really excited about what’s coming up at Haven Ridge, especially our Gin & Jazz event on November 16th. It’s an adults-only afternoon, featuring the incredible Jordan Jive Jazz Band and showcasing some of our region’s best local gin distillers. Guests can enjoy complimentary gin tastings throughout the day, plus our bar will be mixing up some special local gin-inspired cocktails just for the occasion.
Your ticket includes entry, a gin cocktail on arrival, and a full day of Chef Dru’s signature canapés, fresh, flavourful, and designed to pair perfectly with the day’s theme. We’ll also be hosting exclusive VIP gin tasting and food pairing masterclasses, where each distiller will guide guests through a curated experience alongside our chef, a real highlight for gin lovers!

Since rebranding from Mansfield Estate, what have been some of your highlights at the ridge?
And that’s just the start! We’ve got an amazing lineup of local talent taking us through the rest of the year, including Andrew Cousins, Brad Lockwood, DJ Ollie & Luke, Max Marvell, and we’ll be wrapping up 2025 with an epic end-of-year session featuring Autumn Blue on December 28th.
You can check out who’s playing each week and grab your tickets via our website at havenridge.com.au

The rebrand has been such a rewarding journey. Tamara was really intentional with the design. We wanted the new logo to feel like a postage stamp, evoking a true destination and a place truly worth the trip. The warm, fun and welcoming colours perfectly reflect what Haven Ridge is all about.
Our biggest highlight has been seeing that vision come to life, watching locals and visitors fill the space, families picnicing on the hill, kids running around and friends connecting over great food and live music. Those moments of joy remind us every day that all the hard work has been worthwhile.
Can you talk us through the diverse dining and catering options on offer?
Yes, we love catering for everyone, which is why we offer such a diverse range of dining styles at Haven Ridge. We’re so lucky to have Chef Dru as part of our team. He’s a true alchemist in the kitchen, and watching him create is pure magic.
Our Friday Knock-Offs and Sunday Sessions are all about relaxed, street-inspired food, think pulled pork sliders with house pickled slaw, paprika-roasted chicken with jalapeño dippers, and Dru’s signature Ridge Ribs, slow-cooked and served with BBQ sauce, pickles, St Joseph’s greens and tortillas. The kebab platters are always a crowd favourite too. Then on Saturdays, we step it up a notch in The

Ridge Room, where Dru showcases his mastery of shared-feast dining. Dishes might include braised lamb shoulder with pomegranate za’atar, lemon and thyme chicken bites, or steak ‘n’ frites with jalapeño chimichurri. And no matter the menu, one thing’s always guaranteed, Dru’s famous “Mom’s Choc Chip Cookies” (spelt the Canadian way, of course!).
For people interested in connecting with the team or discussing their upcoming wedding or special event, how can they best get in touch?
You can find all our upcoming events, Sunday Sessions and menus at havenridge.com.au, where you can also book lunch online! Planning a wedding or special event? Submit an enquiry through the website, or call 0428 252 277. We’d love to chat and help bring your ideas to life. Thank you both. Interview: Sarah Baker.

Port Macquarie local Danielle Porter has turned her passion for thoughtful gifting into Unbox Me, a business dedicated to sharing love and connection one box at a time. With creativity and care at its core, Unbox Me is all about making people feel seen, supported, and celebrated, no matter the distance.

You describe gifting as your love language. Can you tell us how that passion evolved into creating Unbox Me?
It really started from a personal place. When I moved from Melbourne to Port Macquarie about six years ago, I found myself away from family and friends and looking for meaningful ways to stay connected. I’ve always loved giving thoughtful gifts, the kind that make someone feel truly seen, and that became even more important when I couldn’t just pop over with a bottle of champagne to celebrate the good times, or show up with a hug when things got tough.
Unbox Me is all about helping people share love and support from afar. Why do
you think thoughtful gifting resonates so deeply with people?
I think it’s because a thoughtful gift goes beyond the item itself, it’s really about how it makes someone feel. It’s that sense of being seen, understood, and cared for - something that words alone can’t always express. In a world where so much of our connection happens through screens, a tangible gesture feels really special and reminds us how powerful kindness can be.
From the moment someone lifts the lid, I want it to feel special - the colours, textures, and scents all coming together to create a sense of warmth and thoughtfulness.
How do you approach curating each gift box? What goes into creating that perfect “unboxing” experience? Every box starts with a feeling I want the
recipient to have; whether it’s comfort, celebration, calm, or a little indulgence. From there, I choose products that complement each other both in purpose and presentation.
I love working with Australian brands that share my values around quality and care, and everything is chosen for how it makes someone feel.
The unboxing experience itself is so important to me. From the moment someone lifts the lid, I want it to feel special - the colours, textures, and scents all coming together to create a sense of warmth and thoughtfulness. It’s those small details that transform a gift into something truly meaningful.
Are there certain items or types of boxes that hold special meaning for you personally?
Definitely! When my kids were younger, my favourite way to unwind after they went to bed was a long, hot bath - candle lit, a cheeky glass of wine, some soft music, and just a little time to myself. Those quiet moments felt like such a luxury, and I think that’s reflected in a lot of my boxes today.
I’ve always been drawn to creating those calming, self-care moments for others, a chance to pause and recharge. I’ve actually had five different bath soaks feature in Unbox Me boxes over time, which probably says it all! There’s just something about that ritual of slowing down and taking a moment for yourself that feels so special.
Running a small business often means wearing many hats. What have been some of the most rewarding (and challenging!) parts of the journey so far?

ere’s such a need for gi s that feel genuine and considered, even in the corporate space, and I’m excited to bring that same care and creativity into this side of the business.
When I first started Unbox Me, I was still doing all the admin for my husband’s business, Nathan Porter Concreting, so I really didn’t have the time to give it 100%. Now that our son has stepped into that role, I’m absolutely loving being able to focus fully on Unbox Me and watch it grow.
Like most small-business owners, I definitely wear a lot of hats; from packing orders and answering messages to creating content and managing suppliers. It can be a juggle, but it’s also very rewarding. Seeing how much joy and connection our gift boxes bring people is what makes it all so worthwhile.
How do you keep your creative energy flowing? Where do you find inspiration for new gift ideas and themes?
A lot of my inspiration comes from real moments; conversations with customers, messages I read in the cards, or even my own experiences. I pay close attention to

what people are going through, whether it’s celebrating a new baby, sending comfort during tough times, or simply saying thank you, and I think about what would make me feel loved in that moment.
It also doesn’t hurt that I love to shop! I’m constantly discovering new Australian brands and beautiful products that catch my eye and spark an idea for a new box. I guess you could say I’ve just found a way to turn my love of shopping into a job. What kind of feedback have you received from customers? Are there any stories that have really stuck with you?
While we ship our boxes Australia-wide, my favourite part is still delivering them personally. We include handwritten personal messages from the sender with every box, so I often know the story behind the gift, and it makes each delivery feel meaningful. I recently delivered a box to someone who was going through an incredibly hard time, and when she opened the door, she just broke down with appreciation, that someone cared about her and that she felt seen and loved. Moments like that remind me exactly why I started Unbox Me in the first place.
What’s next for Unbox Me? Are there any exciting new collections, collaborations, or ideas on the horizon?
I’ve just launched a Build Your Own Gift Box option, which I’m so excited about. It allows customers to completely customise their gift - choosing from our range of beautiful products to create something as unique as the person receiving it. It’s been such a lovely way for people to add a personal touch and make their gifts truly meaningful.
Next, I’m turning my focus toward branded corporate gifting, helping business owners create thoughtful, lasting connections with their clients. There’s such a need for gifts that feel genuine and considered, even in the corporate space, and I’m excited to bring that same care and creativity into this side of the business.
Where can we find out more or get in touch?
You can visit our website at www.unboxme.au to browse our curated collection or build your own personalised gift box. You’ll also find us on Instagram and Facebook at @unboxme. au, that’s where I share behind-the-scenes moments, new releases, and lots of gifting inspiration.
However far apart we might be, Unbox Me is a reminder that love and kindness can always be delivered.
Thanks Danielle.

focus contributor.
After 13 years, the time has come for me to say goodbye to Meg + Me. But it’s not all sad, and it’s probably not what you’re thinking either…
First of all, let’s take a little trip down Memory Lane together. It was May 2012 when I went for what I thought was an interview for a casual position at a cute little shop called Meg + Me. It wasn’t long into the “interview” that I realised that I had been identified as the potential new owner of the business… so after I didn’t “get the job” but instead agreed to purchase the business, I was the proud new owner of Meg + Me. That was 1 July 2012. Since then I have grown and learned, adapted and pivoted, matured and thrived. But there’s one thing that has never quite sat right with me.
The business name.
While it was cute and served its purpose at the time, that time has passed. We are stepping into a new era for our business. One that reflects the journey we’ve been on and the vision we have for the future of our business. So, it’s time for us to adopt a new name, one that means something to us, but also to our ever expanding community. While I won’t be sharing our new name with you just yet, you’ll have to wait a few weeks for the “Big Reveal.” What I can say is that the process of creating your own identity is such a valuable thing to do, both on a personal level, but also for your business and community.

For me, running a small business is all about the ability to create and curate something so unique and so personal to us, all the while considering those who visit us and join us both as customers and friends. We’ve worked extremely hard to build long lasting relationships with customers who have become friends, and for us, that is what our small business is all about.
It’s a big thing though to make changes to such an established business. It’s not a decision we made lightly. What about the tourists that visit only once a year and might think it’s “not us” anymore? What about our regulars who have known and loved us as Meg + Me for the past 13 years? What about the people who think my name is Meg? (Well, they’re in for a shock!)
But more importantly, what about… Us? That’s ultimately what it came down to. Changing our business name is about US and what we have created. It’s a final step in taking ownership of the business that in every aspect other than the current name, reflects Us and our vision. So it’s time, and I can’t wait to share it with you soon.
That news aside, it feels like town has completely emerged from its winter hibernation, with more events attracting locals and visitors alike. The town is abuzz with visitors each weekend and we are loving it!
It’s always pleasing to speak with visitors who rave about the place we are lucky enough to call home. “Your beaches are amazing!” “There are so many fabulous places to eat here” “We love going to the Glasshouse” “You guys have the best coffee in town” (I particularly like that one!) are just some of the rave reviews I hear on rotation when people visit town, either as a midway point or the final destination.
It’s true, we’ve got a lot to offer and it’s only getting better. There are small businesses popping up, small businesses getting bigger and better, and of course our beaches and natural attractions are always a hit with locals and visitors alike.
For us, while we are busily prepping for the holiday/festive season ahead (as well as juggling an entire rebrand) we are excitedly looking forward to the rush to the end of 2025 and the buzz that ensues around town each summer.
We’re looking forward to seeing friends and customers that we only see once a year, seeing how their kids have grown, what’s happened in their families since we saw them last, and what exciting things everyone has planned for 2026.
So here’s to new beginnings, and a future that is bright for all of us.

Acclaimed composer and pianist Fiona Joy Hawkins returns with her deeply personal new album, ‘When Shadows Talk’, a raw and reflective exploration of emotion, solitude, and the human experience. Written and recorded in her Kendall home, the album captures the beauty and vulnerability of isolation.
Hi Fiona. Congratulations on the release of ‘When Shadows Talk’. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this deeply personal album? What were you exploring musically and emotionally when creating it?
I need inspiration for musical story-telling so I can use the piano to communicate the world around me as sound. It’s a bit like using pen and paper to write down thoughts and feelings, but using a different medium.
I’m lucky to live in a quiet place (Kendall), and last year, I was able to isolate myself almost completely for six weeks to write ‘When Shadows Talk’. The concept of the album is being in, and exploring the moment, the six-week moment.
I got out my old photo albums, drank wine, read the world news, cried tears and found subjects both from my own experience and from happenings in the world outside, and an exploration of the space I was confined to. The confinement allowed me to explore what lies deep beneath the surface and is often passed over or suppressed, both personally and in the context of broader community discussion.
The album touches on subjects ranging from mental health, war, angels, volcanoes and being different. It sounds extreme and unhealthy (which it was), but it was necessary to find valuable conversations to write about.
I believe good art needs to say something.
You recorded ‘When Shadows Talk’ at home in Kendall with producer Peter Stevenson. What was it like creating something so refined and emotional in such a personal setting?
You can go to the best studio in the world and make an ordinary album, or you can stay at home with your own piano, line the walls with blankets (my house is not a recording studio) and do your best work right there.
I feel blessed that Producer Peter Stevenson (Sony) is nearby (Taree) and was available to work on my project. Between Pete and Misha, (Michael Luchich, engineer), Tony Prince (piano tuner) and of course Wayne Stuart, the piano-maker, I had a fantastic all-Australian team. The piano I recorded on is a hand-made 97 key Aussie piano made from Tasmanian Huon pine!
MEC in Taree, but nobody factored in cold mornings with building expansion noises as the day warmed up. We pulled up stumps after an hour realising we would not be able to get clean takes. I called every studio within a two-hour radius, but nothing was available. My piano at home had several broken strings so I didn’t imagine it was possible, but with a team effort, we made it happen, and after a 4 am start at the MEC, we were ready in Kendall by 4 pm to test the mics and room sound. What a day!

I
feel it’s
important to suggest subject matter to a listener
without overstating it. That way, the audience interprets the music and takes away their own thoughts and emotional response. When this happens, I believe the experience is more personal.
You’ve said the process wasn’t without its challenges. Can you share a few of those “funny in hindsight” moments from the recording sessions?
The project threw up many obstacles, starting with the need to find another piano on the first day of recording. Originally we aimed to record at the
As I look back, I can laugh at the comedy in all that went wrong. Three broken strings, a “buzz” in A above middle C (A4) caused by a screwdriver left inside the piano, wood-chopping, lawn-mowing, dog barking, council truck doing road works at the end of our street, rain on our tin roof, a two hour power outage, mic connection issues… and that didn’t include me hitting the wall from exhaustion and frustration at the end of day one. My producer said to me that all great things come from adversity, but I think that was just an effort to make me feel better. All those problems were real and very difficult to deal with, and each one could have caused the album to fail. Overcoming these obstacles is what makes the album such a personal achievement. How do you hope listeners will feel when they sit down with this album? What kind of journey do you want to take them on?
I feel it’s important to suggest subject
matter to a listener without overstating it. That way, the audience interprets the music and takes away their own thoughts and emotional response. When this happens, I believe the experience is more personal.
You’ve achieved so much, from playing at New York’s Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. ‘When Shadows Talk’ feels incredibly grounded and personal, how does it fit into your wider body of work?
The music is a much quieter experience, one that goes with the solo introverted pathway I took for this album. I love recording studio albums, live albums, full orchestral/instrumental productions, crossing genres and yet the minimalistic approach of solo piano has its own strength and ability to connect with an audience.
You have some exciting shows coming up, what are you looking forward to about playing these new songs live and connecting with local fans?
My December concerts will be the debut live performance of the album, and my first live performance in four years. I will talk about each piece and where the inspiration came from, plus some older audience favourites like Blue Dream and Invisible Train.
Can you share details on the show, where we can get tickets and where the album is available?
I’m playing at Wauchope Community Arts Centre on Saturday 6th December (7.30pm) and Manning Regional Art Gallery (Taree) on Sunday 7th December at 2.30pm. QR codes for Trybooking. com can be found in the adjacent ad, or email: littlehartleymusic@gmail.com for information/reservation.
The music is available wherever you listen to music, and the CD, sheet music book and vinyl are available at FionaJoy. com, Bandcamp.com or order the vinyl at JB Hifi.
Thanks Fiona.

ladies, that magical time when your hair gives up, your tan lines get creative, and you can’t tell if you’re glowing or just mildly overheated.
gives mildly overheated.

The summer we turned pretty (and sweaty)

Now, if you’ve seen ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’, you’ll know the vibe. Flowy dresses, ocean air, romantic lighting and a cast so young that I had to pause halfway through and google their ages, because honestly, they’re all younger than my eldest son, which was awkward. Instead of falling in love with Conrad, I fell in love with the wardrobe. The corset dresses, the soft fabrics, the bold colours, that “I woke up like this but actually I showered, fake tanned and wrestled with my hair straightener for summer waves” energy. Here on the Mid North Coast, we do summer our own way, less movie montage, more sweat moustache and that’s why this season’s fashion is all about comfort that still looks “CHYC”. The “I’m melting but make it fashion” aesthetic. So, what’s actually in this summer (and how to wear it without losing the plot because not everywhere we go has air conditioning).
Lace is having her comeback moment and she’s not the delicate, ‘I stole my grandmas doily collection’ type! She’s soft, subtle, breathable and surprisingly forgiving after a long lunch. White, cream or dusty pink lace dresses, tops and bottoms are everywhere and they’re perfect for our coastal heat. Throw one on, add Birkies or Billinis and you’ll look like you have your life together (even if you yelled “get your shoes on” nine times that morning).

Corset-style tops and dresses are trending (thanks, Belly girl) but with soft fabrics and stretch, so you can actually breathe because let’s face it, no one’s got time for shapewear induced fainting at the family BBQ.
Pop colours are back, think coral, ocean blue, lime and sunshine yellow. They’re fun, flirty (yes, you can wear flirty and be confident) and unapologetically summery. If you’re colour shy, start small: a bright bag, a patterned top or a piece of coloured jewellery and my favourite, linen, it never goes out of style. It breathes, it flatters and it says “I’m a coastal CHYC” even when you’re sweating through a kids’ party. The best part? None of this is made for one body type. It’s for everyone; every shape, every stage, every woman who’s just trying to stay cool and look half decent while doing the school run.
Summer = Party season’s calling! Between weddings, formals, Christmas and Port’s own fancy moment (Toxtails, even though it’s still months away, we have dress hire bookings filling up fast), event season is officially here!
And yes, our designer dress hire studio is open, air-conditioned and ready to play fairy godmother. We’ve got sequins, satins, florals, ruffles and silhouettes that make every woman feel stunning. You can be classy, glam, classic or full Beyoncé, and let’s be real, nothing feels better than wearing a $900 dress for a night, knowing it’s not going to haunt your wallet.

Book early though because apparently “just browsing” turns into “take my money” real quick when you try on a Rebecca Vallance that fits like it was made for you.
5 Easy Ways to Add a Touch of Summer Trend to Your Wardrobe
1. Add lace: it softens any look and instantly feels “coastal cool.”
2. Swap black for brights: coral or sage linen will change your whole mood.
3. Layer your jewellery: especially from EVER, yes, we stock it and its tarnish free, sweat and waterproof (because it actually really survives sweaty Betty moments and the daily ocean swims at Townies).
4. Go one size up: oversized is still in and comfort is the new sexy, oversized, graphic tees that are not going anywhere soon
5. Mix casual with glam: think linen pants with a silk cami, birkies with a floaty dress. Fashion’s supposed to be fun, not stressful.
So here’s to our kind of summer: loud, imperfect, beautiful chaos. The kind where your makeup melts but your outfit stays. The kind where we raise our iced lattes (and maybe a cheeky rosé) to feeling good in our skin, catching up with friends & family and remembering that confidence never goes out of style, because honestly, it’s not “The Summer I Turned Pretty”, “It’s The Summer We All Turned Pretty” (Cringe much - but it had to be said) !!

The Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy is giving young local players a real shot at the big leagues. Led by Belinda Lambkin and the team at Platinum Sports Management, the academy is all about building pathways, performance, and opportunity for the Mid North Coast’s rising rugby league talent.

Hi Belinda. Can you tell us how the idea for the Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy first came about? What inspired you and the team to create a program focused on player pathways and development here on the Mid North Coast?
The Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy concept originated in discussions with Platinum Sports Management regarding player development. The core idea was to address the reduced standard of football for NRL pathways and trial selections, with the goal of helping players signed with Platinum achieving a higher success rate overall.
How would you describe the main goals of the Platinum Academy?
The Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy's main goals are to enhance player pathways and development. By providing country players with increased training opportunities, support, and programs, similar to those available in Sydney and Brisbane, it aims to assist them in reaching the elite level in rugby league. We also provide essential education to players and their families so they
are fully aware of the dedication, commitment, and steps required to succeed in the NRL or NRLW, ensuring we have a higher rate of success from our area.
What kind of programs and training opportunities will players be able to access through the academy?
All trainers within the Academy bring highlevel experience in rugby league, both from playing and coaching roles. They are passionate and dedicated to supporting the academy’s mission to better the future of the game in our area.
The Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy provides comprehensive and specialised programs and training opportunities for our players, facilitated by key partners and experienced staff: Specialised Training Programs
Defensive Strength and Skill
We've partnered with Evolve Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Port Macquarie to focus on the defensive side of rugby league, including tackling, wrestling, and strength. The staff at Evolve collaborate directly with trainers and players to implement a best-inclass defense program tailored for the NRL.
Our head coach and personal trainer, Shanene Matthews, based at Wauchope Fitness Centre, oversees our academy programs. She trains our athletes in all aspects of physical readiness: strength, conditioning, balance, and recovery training from injuries, creating specific programs for every individual athlete. The Wauchope Fitness Centre provides our players with the necessary gym facilities and equipment.
Expert Coaching and Mental Resilience
Experienced Coaching Staff
All trainers within the Academy bring high-level experience in rugby league, both from playing and coaching roles. They are passionate and dedicated to supporting the academy's mission to better the future of the game in our area.
Mental Health and Performance
We prioritise the mental side of the game

through a partnership with Aaron McDonald from Amplify Coaching. He provides crucial mental support to help our players deal with the pressure of making it to the elite level, assists with setting and achieving personal goals, and helps fortify their minds to deal with the demands of becoming a professional athlete.
Can you tell us a bit about the age groups and levels you’re working with; is it designed for emerging juniors, advanced players, or both?
14-20 years old both male and female. Who are some of the key people involved in bringing the academy to life; coaches, mentors, or community partners?
Key Personnel
The Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy is driven by the commitment of key individuals:
• Geoff Smith: CEO of Platinum Sports Management.
• Belinda Lambkin: Player Development Manager for Platinum Sports Management.
• Shanene Matthews: Head Coach and Program Manager for the Academy.
Acknowledgment of Sponsors
We extend our sincere thanks to all our sponsors. Their vital support helps cover the costs of fields, player uniforms, and

gear. Without their generosity, we would not be able to provide this free service to our players.
We want players to know that opportunities exist to be recognised and rewarded for their talent, hard work, and commitment to the sport.
What kind of experience and expertise does the coaching team bring to the program?
The Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy is proud that all our coaches and trainers have played, trained, or coached at elite levels of rugby league. This high-level experience provides our players with a wealth of essential knowledge and insight, giving them a significant advantage as they pursue professional careers.
For many young players in regional areas, pathways to higher-level competition can be limited. How does the academy aim to bridge that gap?
The academy is specifically designed to bridge the pathways gap to higher-level competition. We achieve this by identifying players who are talented, hardworking, and deeply committed, both physically and mentally, and who demonstrate a positive attitude toward achieving their goals. Once identified, these players are provided with clear pathways and opportunities directly through Platinum Sports Management.
What role do you think initiatives like this play in keeping talented young athletes
engaged in the sport locally?
Through the Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy, Platinum Sports Management is actively supporting aspiring rugby league players in our local area. We want players to know that opportunities exist to be recognised and rewarded for their talent, hard work, and commitment to the sport. The Academy acknowledges the wealth of talent in our region and demonstrates that you do not have to be in the big cities to make your dreams and goals come true.
How can local players or families get involved or find out more?
To become a part of the Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy or find out more information, please:
1. Follow us on Facebook: Like and follow our official page, Platinum Port Macquarie Rugby League Academy.

THE FUTURE FOCUS ON HEALTH CARE IN OUR REGION

Hello Moira, it’s an exciting time at Port Macquarie Private Hospital. Can you tell us about the upgrades and renovations that are currently taking place at the hospital?
We are thrilled to be undergoing a development of our facility. We are creating a larger front reception area with a beautiful new cafe; a new theatre and a larger day surgery check in lounge. Our clinical sterilisation unit is also being relocated and will be state of the art. Finally, a new onsite radiology department for inpatients and members of the public will be established within the front reception area plus new car parks to improve the overall customer experience.
What are the main goals behind these improvements?
We have been working towards this development for some time now and I am really excited to share with you the key aspects of stage one of a two stage development. Our goal is to respond to the current and

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Port Macquarie Private Hospital is undergoing an exciting transformation that promises to enhance patient care, modernise facilities, and expand vital services for the growing local community.
As part of a significant two-stage redevelopment, the hospital is introducing a new state-of-the-art theatre, an onsite radiology department, a spacious reception area with a café, and much more.

future growth of our community. Bringing in-house a comprehensive radiology service in conjunction with Lumus will provide many patient and outpatient benefits. Larger reception areas at front of house and the day surgery unit will also improve the patient experience within the facility. Our clinical sterilisation department won’t be obvious to the public, but is integral to ensuring we have the highest quality of sterile equipment in surgical procedures. The whole hospital facility is one of continual improvement. The new furnishings, floor coverings and room updates will also be welcomed by patients. This is a sign of real financial commitment by Ramsay Health Care in Port Macquarie and regional health precincts.

What are you looking forward to the most once they are completed?
We are spoilt for brilliant surgeons choosing to live and work in Port Macquarie because who doesn’t want to live in paradise?
I will miss my job as concierge and helping people find their way! At the moment our main reception is located in Parker St until the end of February, and it will be wonderful to have the front of house commissoned.
Will there be any new departments or specialties available?
We are planning on expansions in services required by the community once the build has been completed. I would love to update you once we have confirmation, so watch this space.
We are gaining a new theatre and it will be our largest and most modern. We are spoilt for brilliant surgeons choosing to live and
I am always considering what is missing for the people of Port and how we can meet these needs, now and in the future.

Can you share how patient care will be improved through these new offerings?
We are building towards a continuum of healthcare for our community. For instance, a person having a knee replacement will be seen pre-operatively by a physiotherapist, have their operation and a short stay in the Hastings Ward. They can then potentially improve their outcomes with a stay in the rehabilitation unit followed by day program attendance on discharge from hospital. We have an award winning hydrotherapy pool which is availble for in and out patients through our Ramsay Health Plus Clinic. The potential for this patient to have all radiology services in-house, including doppler and x-ray investigations creates an anxiety free experience.

The overwhelming feedback is care and kindness from our wonderful staff and doctors from all departments. Our score is usually above 84 which is well above industry level. The feedback also gives us an opportunity to keep improving on patient care.

Have you found there have been more doctors and surgeons
wanting to be part of the private hospital as a result of the expansion?
The hospital expansion and introduction of the Da Vinci X robot are definitely attracting surgeons and physicians to our hospital and local area. This is a win for both the public and private health industries.
We’ve heard about the exciting addition of a new surgical robot, can you tell us more about it?
Let me assure you, the doctor is still in control of all procedures utilising a robot. However,

robotics definitely has reported patient centred benefits including reduced blood loss, a reduced need for pain relief and often a shorter stay in hospital. Surgeons report they have excellent visibility and clarity of the areas they are working on and a vastly improved level of dexterity, especially when working with the Da Vinci X. While robotics is a significant investment, the patient outcomes outweigh this consideration. We are also seeing the enquiry of new surgeons to the area which is vital for our long term sustainability in the community. New doctors are already attracted by the robotics and build their businesses with robotics central to their core business. I am so proud of the calibre of surgeons we have at Port Macquarie Private and their ability to complete city worthy procedures in our town. What types of surgeries will this robotic

system be used for?
The Da Vinci X can be used for robot assisted surgery in urology, general surgery, and gynaecology. While the ROSA is utilised by our orthopaedic surgeons, I am investigating other robotic options to ensure we continue to future proof our health facility.
How do all of these developments, new facilities, services, doctors, and technology, reflect the hospital’s commitment to patient care?
We would not be in business if it weren’t for the support of our doctors and patients. Often people who are attending our hospital are anxious and potentially looking at an unfavourable diagnosis. It is our job to demonstrate kindness and empathy at a time when they are most vulnerable, whilst working to quality healthcare standards. This is our purpose, taking care of you while you are
taking care of your health and wellbeing.
Is there a message you’d like to share with the community about the changes and what they can expect moving forward?
We are future focused on providing a robust private healthcare facility to help you and your loved ones when you need us over the years. A person and their family go through different stages of needing health care services and we are continuing to see opportunities to provide services for now and the future for our growing community.
Finally, what are you most proud of when you look at what the hospital has achieved and the direction in regional health care that you are taking?
The people we employ and the contractors, doctors and community who work with us. They all create a strong bond and so many patients are ‘frequent flyers’ and I love welcoming them back knowing they have confidence in our ability to deliver quality healthcare in their hometown.

DR. ED WELLINGS COMPLETES 500 ROBOTIC KNEE REPLACEMENTS
Dr. Ed Wellings, an orthopaedic surgeon based right here in Port Macquarie, has completed his 500th roboticassisted knee replacements. A milestone that positions him as the most experienced robotic knee surgeon using the ROSA north of Newcastle and the sixth most experienced in New South Wales.
Performing surgeries at Port Macquarie Private Hospital, Dr. Wellings has been at the forefront of advanced joint replacement techniques on the Mid-North Coast. The hospital was the first in the region to introduce an orthopaedic robot, leading the charge in adopting cutting-edge surgical technologies.
Since October 2021, Dr. Wellings has utilised the ROSA® (Robotic Surgical Assistant) system to perform total knee replacements. The technology enables highly personalised procedures by allowing surgeons to map out a patient’s unique anatomy with incredible precision.
According to Dr. Wellings, "ROSA allows us to tailor each surgery to the individual, improving both accuracy and outcomes. It’s a step-change in how we think about joint replacement."
Unlike some robotic systems that require a CT scan, ROSA uses X-raybased mapping, meaning patients are exposed to less radiation during the pre-operative planning process. This not only makes the procedure safer but also more accessible.
Dr. Wellings complements this state-of-the-art surgical method with a commitment to patient education and engagement. He incorporates the MyMobility App, a digital care platform available on iPhone and Android. The app offers patients a customised, interactive care plan, helping them better understand their condition, track their recovery, and stay actively involved in the rehabilitation process. "It’s not just about the surgery," he says. "It’s about empowering patients to take ownership of their recovery and tools like MyMobility make that possible."

Movember is a reminder for men to prioritise their health, but one topic that’s still whispered about is bladder control.
Incontinence affects many men, particularly after prostate surgery or radiation therapy. It can be confronting and frustrating, but it’s also very common and, in most cases, highly treatable with the right support.
The prostate gland sits just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. During prostate surgery or radiation treatment, some of the muscles and nerves that help control urination can be affected.
After prostate surgery (such as a radical prostatectomy), leakage often occurs because the internal urinary sphincter is weakened or removed as part of the procedure. The pelvic floor muscles then have to take on extra work to keep the bladder closed. Until those muscles are strengthened again, urine may leak with coughing, lifting, or even simple movements.
Radiation therapy can also irritate the bladder and urethra, leading to urgency, frequency,
and sometimes urge incontinence. The tissues can become less flexible over time, which makes the bladder more sensitive and harder to control.
These changes are not a reflection of personal failure. They’re a natural result of medical treatment in an area with delicate anatomy. Knowing what’s happening helps take away some of the fear and confusion.
Most men notice gradual improvement in the weeks and months after prostate surgery, especially when they follow a tailored pelvic floor program. On average, bladder control returns within 3 to 12 months, although every recovery journey is unique.
If you’ve had radiation, the focus is slightly different. Physiotherapy can help improve muscle control, manage urgency, and support bladder retraining. Hydration and gentle bladder calming strategies also play a role, since over-restriction of fluids can make symptoms worse.
Helpful
Start early. If you’re scheduled for prostate surgery, begin pelvic floor training a few weeks beforehand.
Use the correct muscles. Many men unknowingly contract the wrong areas. A physiotherapist can confirm proper technique,

sometimes with ultrasound or biofeedback. Avoid bladder irritants. Coffee, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, and carbonated drinks can worsen urgency.
Keep bowels regular. Constipation increases pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor. Don’t stop drinking water. Staying hydrated keeps the bladder healthy and prevents irritation from concentrated urine.
Stay patient. Improvement takes time, practice and consistency, but results are worth it.
For some men, temporary continence products or absorbent pads are useful during recovery. These are not a sign of defeat, just a practical step while your body heals. If leakage continues beyond a year, or if you experience ongoing urgency, pain, or blood in the urine, check in with your GP or urologist. Many men also benefit from mental health support during this time. It’s normal to feel frustrated or self-conscious, but reassurance, education, and realistic expectations go a long way in regaining confidence. Incontinence after prostate surgery or radiation is common, temporary for most, and nothing to be embarrassed about. Pelvic floor training, patience, and guidance from a physiotherapist can help you regain control and quality of life.

Tooth whitening is one of the most popular ways to rejuvenate your smile and restore confidence quickly and inexpensively. If your teeth have become dull or yellowed from years of staining, why not consider professional tooth whitening with your dental team at Sundial Dental?
A bright smile, whether naturally radiant or professionally enhanced, can do wonders for your self-esteem. In contrast, discoloured or stained teeth may leave you feeling self-conscious, reluctant to smile, and less confident in social settings.
How It Works. Tooth whitening works by removing internal stains through a process called oxidation. Unlike simple cleaning or polishing, whitening targets both surface and deeper stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and other daily habits. The most common whitening agents are peroxide-based gels. The strategy at Sundial is to combine peroxidebase gel with LED light to enhance results.
At-Home Whitening with Professional Results. At Sundial Dental, we offer a professional take-home whitening kit that delivers clinic-quality results in the comfort of your own home. Our system combines
peroxide gel and an LED light to gently and safely return your teeth to their natural whitest shade. The kit is rechargeable, easy to use, and effective, typically requiring just 10 to 20 minutes of wear per day for up to 5 days.

At Kevria, we believe that true inclusion begins with connection, purpose, and possibility. e Enhancing Capabilities Program was created to reimagine what community access can look like moving beyond traditional 1:1 support to create experiences that build skills, confidence, and meaningful relationships.

Can you tell us the story behind Kevria’s Enhancing Capabilities program?
The Enhancing Capabilities program was developed in response to a growing concern we observed in the way community access supports were being delivered. Too often, we saw participants receiving 1:1 support in ways that were overly formal, lacked meaningful purpose and disconnected from real community life. There was little emphasis on building capacity or fostering informal, meaningful relationships.
At Kevria, we knew there had to be a better way. Enhancing Capabilities was created to challenge this model and reimagine community access as a space for growth, connection, and empowerment. The program is designed to support participants to build confidence, develop skills, and form genuine social connections moving beyond service delivery to create real opportunities for inclusion and belonging. What values are at the heart of the Kevria brand? Kevria is built on the values of empathy, integrity, and communication. These values guide every interaction we have with participants, families, colleagues, and the
broader community. We lead with empathy, ensuring that every person feels seen, heard, and respected. We act with integrity, doing what is right even when it is hard, and we prioritise open, honest communication to build trust and foster collaboration.
Please take us through what you do and offer your clients. What makes up your team within Enhancing Capabilities, and what is your role? At Kevria, we offer a range of supports that are tailored to each participants unique goals, strengths, and aspirations. Our services include behaviour support, therapeutic assistance, SIL, and community engagement, all grounded in a person led, rights-based approach.
Within the Enhancing Capabilities program, I have the privilege of working alongside an incredible team of Behaviour Therapy Assistants (BTAs). Together, we co-design and deliver experiences that go beyond traditional models of community access. We focus on building skills, confidence, and realworld connections that support long-term independence and wellbeing.
As the Enhancing Capabilities Leader, my role is to support the programs development and implementation. I work closely with participants, families, and our team to ensure
that every support we provide is meaningful, empowering, and aligned with each person’s vision for their life. I’m passionate about creating opportunities for people to connect with their communities in ways that feel authentic and fulfilling whether that’s through shared interests, peer groups, or new experiences that spark joy and growth.
How are you changing the industry? We’re committed to reshaping how community access is understood and delivered.
Rather than defaulting to isolated 1:1 support, we focus on capacity building, peer connection, and informal networks that support long-term independence and wellbeing.
Kevria is also actively seeking to collaborate with other service providers to co-design supports that are truly participant led. We believe that by working together, we can create a more connected inclusive sector, one that values innovation, shared learning, and the voices of people with disability at the centre.
We’ve had the privilege of supporting Eugene and his achievements highlight the work that we do.
Thanks.

Eugene is an 11-year-old boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who has been supported through Kevria’s Enhancing Capabilities program for the past two years.

Dhas built strong, trusting
relationships with his Behaviour Therapy Assistant (BTA) which have been central to his progress and growing his confidence.
When Eugene first came to us, he was experiencing significant challenges with daily routines, particularly around personal hygiene, emotion regulation and social development for school. He often struggled with social anxiety, especially in group settings. These difficulties were also placing a strain on his relationships at home.
Through our in-home, skill-based support, we began working with Eugene and his family to establish a consistent afternoon routine. Our Behaviour Therapy Assistants (BTAs) used visual schedules, positive reinforcement, and step-by-step coaching to help Eugene build independence in tasks like showering, dressing, getting ready for school the next day, cooking and and managing time. Over several weeks, Eugene began initiating these tasks on his own, leading to a marked improvement in his afternoon transitions which significantly increased his relationships at home and progress at school.

To support Eugene’s social development, he also joined our after-school activities program. Initially hesitant and withdrawn, Eugene was gently introduced to small group settings where he could engage in shared interests. Our team created a safe, structured environment that allowed Eugene to explore social interactions at his own pace.
Over time, Eugene’s confidence grew. He began initiating conversations, participating in group games, and even inviting peers to join him in activities. His father reported a noticeable shift at home, less resistance to tasks within the home, more positive interactions with his siblings and a new found sense of pride in his achievements.
Today, Eugene has developed practical cooking abilities, learning to follow simple recipes, prepare snacks, and safely use kitchen tools under supervision. Through regular coaching and visual supports Eugene has built selfawareness and consistency in his hygiene routines. He now demonstrates greater independence in managing his personal care and takes pride in himself. A major milestone in Eugene’s journey was overcoming his
fear of dogs. Through gradual exposure and encouragement, Eugene progressed from avoidance and distress to walking calmly past dogs and eventually interacting with them confidently and without fear.
Eugene’s journey is a powerful example of how the Enhancing Capabilities program supports children to build real-world skills, strengthen relationships, and thrive in their communities.

with DR KRISTY KOSTALAS OWNER - PORT MEDICAL AESTHETICS CLINIC

Dr. Kristy, why do the neck and chest age differently than the face?
The skin on your neck and décolletage is thinner and more delicate than facial skin, yet receives far less attention. This area has fewer sebaceous glands, meaning less natural oil and more prone to dryness. Constant movement from turning your head, looking down at phones, and sleeping positions accelerate aging. The chest is also frequently exposed to sun without the same protection we give our faces.
What are the telltale signs of neck and chest aging?
We often see horizontal lines across the neck,"tech neck" or "necklace lines", from repeatedly looking down. The chest commonly develops a crepey texture, sun spots, and vertical lines. Loss of firmness is another major concern. Many patients tell me their neck "gives away" their age even when their face looks great.
When should people start caring for these areas?
Prevention is easier than correction. I recommend starting from late 20s or early 30s, but it's never too late. We see significant improvements at all ages when people begin proper care. The key is consistency. These areas respond well to the same active ingredients that benefit facial skin.
What's the essential at-home routine for neck and décolletage?
Think of it as extending your facial routine.

Every product you apply to your face should continue down your neck and chest.
Morning: Hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid or B5, vitamin C for protection, moisturiser, and crucially, SPF 50. The chest is particularly vulnerable to sun damage in our Australian climate.
Evening: Cleanse, apply treatment serums, and finish with a richer moisturiser. You can use retinol on neck and chest, though start cautiously as this skin can be more sensitive. Are there specific ingredients that work particularly well?
Peptides support collagen production and firmness. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps with texture, hydration, and sun damage. Retinol improves fine lines and skin quality, though you may need a lower concentration than on your face. A good moisturiser with ceramides maintains the skin barrier.
What about professional treatments at PMAC?
We offer treatments specifically for neck and chest rejuvenation. Microneedling is effective for texture and collagen stimulation. Chemical peels address sun damage and pigmentation. IPL targets brown spots and redness. For significant concerns, Nanofractional RF provides excellent tightening and resurfacing. LED therapy supports healing and reduces inflammation.
What's the biggest mistake people make?
Neglecting sunscreen is number one. People apply SPF to faces but forget their neck and chest are equally exposed. The second mistake
is stopping skincare at the jawline. Whatever you're doing for your face should extend down. It takes seconds longer but makes a significant difference.
Can your sleeping position affect aging?
Yes. Sleeping on your side or stomach creates compression lines on the chest and neck creasing. While we can't all become back sleepers overnight, awareness helps. Silk or satin pillowcases reduce friction and creasing.
Final advice for maintaining a youthful neck and décolletage?
Start now, be consistent, and don't forget SPF. Your neck and chest will thank you in ten years. If you're concerned about existing damage, book a consultation with our team at PMAC. We can assess specific concerns and create a targeted treatment plan. Remember, your skincare routine shouldn't end at your jawline!

Hi John. Congratulations on 10 years of Blah Blah Blah Coffee for Blokes!
Can you tell us how it all began and what inspired you to start the groups here in Port Macquarie and Wauchope?
I started the first group in 2015 in Coffs Harbour because I know that having a place for men to talk - in a casual safe place - is important to men’s health. I was volunteering at the soup kitchen and could see a real need. The group started out small and grew by word of mouth. I moved to Armidale and then Port Macquarie and the group just naturally followed along. Men’s health and wellbeing is important in every community. I was approached by a community member in Wauchope to branch out and Blah Blah Blah Coffee for Blokes now meets there weekly. For those who haven’t heard of Blah Blah Blah Coffee for Blokes before, how would you describe what it’s all about?
It’s more than a cuppa for the blokes. We talk about all sorts of things, from health

For the past decade, John Crisp has been creating safe spaces for men to connect, talk, and support one another through Blah Blah Blah Co ee for Blokes. With groups now thriving in Port Macquarie and Wauchope, John celebrates 10 years of conversation, camaraderie, and commitment to men’s health and wellbeing this International Men’s Day.

issues to family issues which can sometimes lead to discussions about addiction issues for themselves or family members. Nothing is really off limits and it is not always serious. The blokes also have a good laugh and it is a great place to share interests like sport and hobbies which all have a positive effect on men’s health.

e blokes also have a good laugh and it is a great place to share interests like sport and hobbies which all have a positive e ect on men’s health.

then come back for a blah blah blah. Some of the men choose not to walk and would rather just blah blah blah.
You have regular meet-ups in both Port Macquarie and Wauchope, when do they happen and what does a typical coffee catch-up look like?
At 8am Tuesday mornings we meet for a swim at Town Beach in summer and then go back to HQ area at 9am for a blah blah blah. There is no finish time but it usually wraps up about 11am.
On Saturday mornings we meet at 9am in the HQ area and go for a walk along the breakwall or up to Mrs Macquarie’s Garden
Wauchope group meets on Thursday mornings at Whistlestop Café Timbertown. This venue will be changing in about 4 weeks and details will be on the Blah Blah Blah Coffee for Blokes Facebook page.
What do you think keeps the group going strong after all these years?
It is all about the friendship and social network that is created by the community that keeps it strong. It is the sense of belonging and the commitment I have to the community to make sure the groups are successful.
You’re celebrating the 10-year anniversary through October and November, with International Men’s Day also coming up.
How will you be marking the occasion?
To mark the 10th anniversary in October we had a lunch at Rivermark Care which was well attended by the founding members of the group. We are also having a special event for International Men’s Day in November.
This year we are having smoko at Roto House on Wednesday 19th November from 11am to 1pm. A light lunch and soft drink is being provided by a generous donation from a community member with catering by the Roto House café. Tea and coffee is for sale from the café inside on the day. We will have a prize for the best Hawaiian shirt worn which is a seafood voucher from Port Fresh Seafood.
What changes or growth have you seen in the group, or in the conversations around men’s health, since you first started? Men are willing to open up more about health than they did 10 years ago. Men are also asking for help and referrals to services more than previously. While our group is casual, the number is increasing and this is due mostly to social media and partners of men also suggesting that the group would be beneficial to them and in turn to family. The use of social media has increased the opportunity for men to find resources and services and has helped take away the stigma of asking for assistance. I have also noticed an increased interest from the medical profession linking groups like Blah Blah Blah to men’s health and wellbeing. I personally have worked with lots of community services to raise awareness within NSW health.
For men in the community who might be hesitant to join, what would you say to encourage them to come along for a coffee?

While our group is casual the number is increasing and this is due mostly to social media and partners of men also suggesting that the group would be beneficial to them and in turn to family.
Just do it! We keep it simple and casual. Just turn up. There are no commitments and it’s free. The group is basically directed by the men. There is a small committee for any big
decisions and we listen, so it works well for everyone.
Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of Blah Blah Blah Coffee for Blokes and the broader conversation about men’s health and wellbeing?
Recently I have been approached by a couple of men in the community who have been impacted by DNA testing. I am forming another group Blah Blah Blah DNA Bombshell,
a subject very close to my heart having dealt with this situation since an Ancestry DNA test in 2019. It is surprising how many men have been affected in unexpected ways which has had an impact on their health due to the stress and not having anyone to discuss the issues with. The first group will meet at 9:30am on Sunday 7th December 2025 at Roto House and will be held on the first Sunday of the month thereafter. I will be taking a short break in November to recharge the batteries but Blah Blah Blah will keep meeting. As long as there is a need in the community we will keep going.
Thanks John.

egular servicing of your outboard motor is essential to ensure its longevity, reliability, and optimal performance. Neglecting maintenance can lead to costly repairs, decreased fuel efficiency, and unexpected breakdowns that could ruin your boating experience.
Why Servicing Matters!...
Routine maintenance, such as oil and filter changes, inspecting the fuel system, and replacing components like the impeller, spark plugs and anodes, helps prevent minor issues from escalating into major problems. Salt water, in particular, is highly corrosive and can quickly damage an engine if not maintained and serviced regularly. Build ups of grime, salt, water or fuel residue can cause major problems in your boat if left unattended.
A well maintained outboard motor will run more efficiently, deliver better fuel economy and smoother operation. Regular checks reduce the risk of engine problems when you’re on the water, it could be an inconvenience at best and a serious safety hazard at worst.
For new Suzuki Marine outboards yearly servicing ensures your motor receives the maximum warranty they offer, extending

it from 3 to 6 years from date of purchase. For older engines, a good marine technician will identify areas of wear and tear, test your outboard for reliability, and ensure that your boat, motor and trailer are operating safely. Why choose us? North Coast Boating Centre offers comprehensive servicing for all makes and models of outboard and inboard engines. Our experienced team specialises in everything from servicing and simple repairs to diagnosing and resolving complex engine issues using the latest diagnostic equipment to ensure accurate and cost effective repairs. With a strong commitment to quality workmanship, honesty, and integrity, North Coast Boating Centre is known for its friendly customer service and practical expertise. We also offer one working day servicing, minimising downtime and getting you back on the water faster. Regular servicing is crucial for maintaining your outboard motor's performance and longevity. Trusting North Coast Boating Centre with your pride and joy ensures that your vessel receives the expert care it needs. NCBC offers servicing in our workshop and on-site at your location.

wning your home outright is one of the great Australian dreams, but for most of us, it can feel a long way off. Between rising living costs, high interest rates, and the day-to-day demands of life, paying down a mortgage can seem like a slow climb. The good news? With a few smart tweaks, you can shave years (and tens of thousands of dollars) off your loan term, without making huge sacrifices. Here’s how.
1. Switch to fortnightly repayments
It sounds simple, but this is one of the easiest ways to get ahead. Most lenders calculate interest daily and charge it monthly, so the more often you make repayments, the faster your balance drops.
By paying fortnightly instead of monthly, you effectively make the equivalent of one extra month’s repayment each year, 26 fortnights instead of 12 months. That small change can cut years off a typical 30-year loan.
2. Use an offset account wisely
If your loan has an offset account, make the most of it. Every dollar sitting in your offset reduces the balance you’re charged interest on. For example, if you owe $600,000 and have $20,000 in your offset, you’ll only pay interest on $580,000. That means more of your repayment goes towards the principal ,
the amount you actually owe, helping you pay down the loan faster.
Try to have your salary paid straight into the offset account, and use it for everyday spending. Even keeping your money in there for a few extra days each month helps reduce interest.
3. Round up your repayments
If your monthly repayment is $2,367, round it up to $2,400 or even $2,500. That small increase, the cost of a few coffees a week, can take years off your loan and save thousands in interest. You can also set up an automatic transfer so it happens without thinking about it. Consistency is key.
4. Put extra cash to work
Tax refund? Work bonus? Unexpected windfall? Instead of splurging, consider putting at least a portion straight into your home loan. For instance, a one-off $5,000 payment early in your loan could save you more than double that in interest over time. It’s a simple, stressfree way to get ahead.
5. Don’t set and forget your interest rate
Many homeowners stay with the same lender for years, assuming they’re getting a fair deal, but that loyalty can cost you. Lenders often offer better rates to new customers than existing ones. If your rate starts with a “6” when others are offering a “5”, it’s

worth reviewing your options. Even a small difference, say, 0.50% on a $600,000 loan, could save around $3,000 a year in interest. Refinancing can be a quick way to free up cash and speed up your loan payoff.
6. Avoid repayment holidays if you can Some lenders let you pause repayments for a few months during tough times. While it can be a relief, remember that interest keeps building up during the break, meaning your loan could take longer (and cost more) to pay off in the end. If you do need to pause, make a plan to catch up once you’re back on your feet.
7. Get professional advice
Everyone’s financial situation is different. A mortgage broker can look at your specific goals, income, and loan structure to find the smartest ways to pay off your mortgage faster. Sometimes a small change, like adjusting repayment frequency, tweaking your offset setup, or refinancing to a better rate, can make a big difference. Paying off your mortgage sooner isn’t about luck or cutting back to the bone, it’s about making small, consistent choices that work in your favour. If you’d like to see how much faster you could become mortgage-free, reach out at farnsworthfinancial.com.au and book in a Discovery Appointment today. A quick conversation today could save you years off your loan tomorrow.

n schools across Australia, there is growing recognition that sport and physical activity play a critical role in supporting student learning. Far from being a distraction from academic achievement, involvement in sport has been shown to improve cognitive development, classroom behaviour, and overall academic performance.
This article explores how sport positively impacts education, drawing on Australian research and highlighting why catholic schools in the Hastings prioritise physical activity in the curriculum and offer world class opportunities for students to participate and excel in their chosen representative sporting endeavours.
Regular physical activity has a direct and positive impact on how the brain functions. According to a study by the University of Western Australia, students who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity performed better in tasks involving memory and concentration. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which supports the growth of new neural connections and improves cognitive performance.
Australian researchers have also found that students who participate in regular sport are more likely to stay focused in class, complete homework, and achieve higher results in literacy and numeracy assessments.
Sport helps students develop better habits around focus and discipline, which translate into the classroom. A 2020 report by the Australian Sports Commission found that students who regularly participated in school sport were more likely to attend school, arrive on time, and remain engaged in their learning.
Structured physical activity also promotes goal-setting, persistence, and time management. These are important academic skills that can lead to better overall academic outcomes, particularly in high school where students need to manage multiple responsibilities.
Physical Activity Boosts Mental Wellbeing
There is a clear link between mental wellbeing and academic success. Physical activity is known to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, and support emotional regulation. In 2021, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported that secondary students who were physically active at least five times per week showed higher levels of psychological wellbeing and academic motivation.
Better mental health allows students to manage stress more effectively, stay positive about school, and maintain a consistent effort in their studies.
Building Social Skills and Learning Environments
Sport fosters teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. These social-emotional skills contribute to a positive school climate where students feel connected and motivated. Participation in sport helps students develop confidence and resilience, both of which are important for navigating academic challenges.
When students feel connected through sport, they are more likely to feel a sense of belonging in school, which is closely linked to better academic outcomes.
Inclusive Sport Builds Equity in Learning
Sport offers opportunities for all students to participate and succeed, regardless of their academic ability. Inclusive sporting programs can help close the gap for students who may not feel confident in traditional academic settings. By offering diverse physical activity options, schools can cater to different interests and abilities, promoting a more equitable learning environment.
Sport in the Hastings Regions Catholic Schools
Sport in our schools is more than just a break from the classroom. It is a powerful educational tool that supports learning, wellbeing, and student development. By valuing physical activity as a core part of our catholic education, our schools enhance academic outcomes and help students thrive. Ongoing investment in school sport, physical education, and extra curricular activities is not just beneficial for student health, it is essential for academic success.

As Australia’s population ages, more families are facing the complex and emotional decision of moving a loved one into residential aged care. Amid the stress and urgency of finding the right care, many people are blindsided by the financial maze that follows. One of the most misunderstood aspects of this process is the Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) While the term refundable sounds reassuring, the arrangements around RADs and aged care payments can hide traps that leave families out of pocket, delay refunds, or expose estates to unexpected complications. Understanding how these payments work, and where the pitfalls lie, is essential before signing on the dotted line.
What Is a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD)? A RAD is an interest-free loan paid by a resident to an aged care provider to secure a room in a residential aged care facility. The amount can range from tens of thousands to well over $1 million, depending on the facility and location.
The good news is the RAD is generally refundable when the resident leaves the facility, whether they move out, or upon

When Refundable is not Refundable

death. But the conditions can vary, and that’s where the traps begin to appear.
Trap 1: A New Act – When Refundable is not Refundable. The new Aged Care Act 2024 has effect from 1 November 2025. One of the key changes is that operators must now deduct and retain 2% of a RAD for each year a resident is in care, for up to 5 years. The bottom line following these changes is that only 90% of a Refundable Accommodation Deposit is actually guaranteed to be refunded. The changes won’t apply to existing residents, so there will also be a mix of rules depending on when a resident entered care.
Trap 2: Delays in Refunds After Death. An operator must refund the RAD balance within 14 days of the resident leaving the facility or passing away. In practice, delays are common. Many providers will not release the funds until probate or letters of administration are granted, in case there is any uncertainty over who is entitled to receive the refund.
This can create serious cash flow problems for estates. Obtaining a grant of probate can take several months, and in the meantime, large sums of money sit in the provider’s account.
Trap 3: Estate Planning and Ownership Confusion. Many families contribute to a

parent’s RAD, for example, a child paying part of the deposit on behalf of their mother. If those contributions are not properly documented, serious disputes can arise later about who owns the refund.
Usually the refund will be paid to the resident’s estate, not the contributing child. That can create friction between siblings and delay estate administration, unless there is a clear agreement in place.
The safest course is to document any family contributions in writing and obtain legal advice before paying any part of a RAD. Priest Legal frequently advises clients on documenting family contributions, protecting entitlements, and ensuring that estate planning documents reflect these arrangements.
The Takeaway. Aged care decisions are emotional and time-pressured, but rushing the financial arrangements can lead to expensive mistakes. Refundable Accommodation Deposits are not always as straightforward as they seem.

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.
‘From global brand founder to bestselling author, Samantha Wills tells the real stories behind creative ambition, reinvention, and building a life that feels like your own. Her work includes the bestselling memoir 'Of Gold & Dust' and the children’s 'Marigold' series, with forthcoming projects in adult fiction and screenwriting.’
Samantha, your journey from a beading class in Port Macquarie, to a Bondi kitchen table to building one of Australia’s most iconic jewellery brands is the stuff of legend. When you look back on those early days, what was it that kept you creating, even when the odds, the noise, or the self-doubt crept in? I think back then, being so young when I started the brand (21), it truly was a mix of naivety and passion. I did not know how rocky the path ahead was, and there was a real beauty in that, to not know enough to be consumed with fear, asking, what if all of this doesn’t work out?

I also think it is important to acknowledge the timing of it all. It was just before the digital boom of e-commerce and social media, so by the time those emerged, we had already hit the ground running. It was a case of where hard work and determination met opportunity, and I feel very grateful for that.
Your memoir, 'Of Gold and Dust', is as raw as it is radiant. What was the most surprising thing you discovered about yourself in the process of writing and was there a moment that truly shifted how you saw your own story? What surprised me most was realising how often I had tried to force my life into the shape I wanted, especially in relationships. When you write a memoir, you cannot cast yourself as the hero or the victim. You have to take accountability for your role in the story. You can only share your own experience of a situation, not use the pen to place blame on everyone you feel ever did you wrong. Looking back with honesty, I could see all the places where I clung to outcomes I believed would make me feel worthy. The biggest shift was seeing that the signs were always there; the exhaustion, the anxiety, the little voice whispering 'this isn’t it', yet I would still hold tight to what I thought I should do. It is also a powerful experience to revisit earlier versions of yourself. There was something almost spiritual about returning to the more
difficult chapters and letting her know she would get through it.
You’ve worn many creative hats, designer, author, speaker, mentor. How do you stay connected to that original spark of creativity, and has your definition of ‘success’ evolved along the way? Creativity has never just been something I do, it is who I am, and I don't mean creativity in the traditional sense of paintbrushes and pottery wheels. I mean the act of making: a conversation, a relationship, a business, a book. Life itself is a creative process, so when the spark feels dim, I take it as data, a sign to look at what is draining me instead of energising me. Curiosity is usually the compass back. If I stay curious about ideas, people, places, even the things I am craving to learn, the creativity returns. My definition of success has evolved dramatically. In the early years, success lived outside of me, the next milestone, the next headline, the next hit of validation. Now, success feels more internal: a calm nervous system; work that feels like a choice, not a performance; space to create simply because I want to. Success is not a destination anymore, it feels more like a frequency, and I am learning to choose the one that feels like home.
The Samantha Wills brand became synonymous with storytelling, every piece seemed to hold emotion, memory, and

meaning. How intentional was that sense of storytelling in your design, and how do you now express that same artistry beyond jewellery? It didn't begin with a strategy, it began with what I wanted to make. The storytelling was not intentional at first, it was intuitive, but when I saw how deeply people connected to the pieces, the symbolism, the memory each piece could hold, I leaned into that. Not in a manufactured way, but by purposefully amplifying what was already true. I have always said I am a commercial creative. Some creatives live purely for the art and I admire that, but I have always been fascinated by the intersection of creativity and commerce. I did not come through art school. I came through the school of making something work in the real world. I would notice a cultural moment or a market opportunity and ask: how can we create something that genuinely belongs here? That is where the storytelling lived.
You’ve spoken powerfully about burnout and the pressure of being a ‘brand’ as much as a person. How do you now nurture your creativity and protect your peace in a world that still celebrates the hustle? Burnout taught me that I cannot outsource my self-worth to performance, whether that is sales figures or social media

When I am deep in a project, I allow myself to disappear into it, without the guilt of narrating every moment online, and when I do show up publicly, I try to do it with intention, not obligation.
metrics. But I also live in the real world: being a ‘brand’ is part of the job in creative industries. Visibility matters. Social media is the shop window, and without tending to it, the work inside can go unseen. I understand that the art must come first. When I am deep in a project, I allow myself to disappear into it, without the guilt of narrating every moment online, and when I do show up publicly, I try to do it with intention, not obligation.
Your journey feels like a masterclass in intuition and reinvention. What advice would you give to emerging creatives or entrepreneurs who are standing on that edge, ready to leap, but unsure what’s next? I think intuition is the key part. Society guides us to believe that if we cannot logically explain it, hold it, or justify it, then it is dangerous and should not be pursued. But that is the nature of intuition: it is a feeling, a knowing without evidence. The real work is returning to ourselves so we can not only hear that knowing, but trust it. Trust that we can take a step forward even without proof. I also find it helpful to de-escalate the language we use around risk. We say things like “leap of faith”, “jump in the deep end”, “dive in”, “take the plunge,” - no wonder we freeze! Instead, I think in terms of shuffling closer, inching forward. It feels more achievable, and often the smallest movement is all that

is required to explore something new. There is no guarantee or set outcome, and accepting that keeps us open to what presents along the way. My advice is take small shuffles toward where you feel called, hold tight to the vision, but stay flexible with the path. That is where the synchronicities and the magic tend to appear.
Finally, the Illuminate column is all about people who light up the spaces they touch. When do you feel most illuminated, most yourself, in the world right now? I feel most illuminated when I am creating. I believe creativity is spiritual. The way ideas arrive as energetic bubbles of information that drop into our minds and ask us to bring them to life… there's something sacred in that. I honour that process. When an idea lands, I sit with it and ask whether it is for me to bring to life or for me to pass on. If I feel excited and curious, I know it is asking me to take responsibility for it. If not, I tuck it away, knowing the timing or recipient may reveal itself later.
Thanks Samantha.

There was a time when the mention of “coastal style” in Australia summoned visions of endless white wicker, bleached timbers, seashell arrangements, and the occasional turquoise cushion for that obligatory pop of “ocean energy.” Fast forward to 2025, and the design tide has turned. The modern Australian coastal look is no longer about recreating a Hamptons beach house; it’s about crafting calm contemporary sanctuaries that reflect the warmth of our landscape and the sophistication of our coastal lifestyle. Say hello to Australian Modern Organic Coastal a fresher, moodier, and infinitely cosier evolution of the sea-inspired spaces we once knew. From Whitewashed to Warm
Gone are the days when coastal interiors were ruled by a sea of white. Today’s coastal homes are mid-tone timbers, buttery neutrals, and tactile finishes that invite you to slow down and stay awhile. The result is spaces that still feel light and airy but carry a gentle depth - more “coastal retreat after a sunrise surf” than “bleached villa in Santorini.”
Where once we saw crisp whitewashed floors and identical blonde wood coffee tables, we now find oak, teak, and walnut in mellow mid-tones, each adding dimension and natural warmth. These richer hues play beautifully

with sun-kissed neutrals, think oatmeal, travertine beige, clay, and muted sand tones. The effect is layered, organic, and effortlessly grounded in nature.
Australian Modern Organic Coastal isn’t about abandoning the nautical sensibility, it’s about elevating it. That breezy, barefoot vibe remains, but it’s now paired with a quiet luxury that feels more mindful, more authentic, more us.
Picture this: a crisp white slipcover sofa, plump with relaxed linen cushions, floating atop a thick jute or wool rug that adds visual weight and sumptuous texture. Next to it, curved swivel armchairs in soft caramel or ochre velvet add warmth and contrast. The look balances laid-back and luxe, perfectly capturing how contemporary Australians live by the sea, relaxed, but design conscious. To round out the look, layer shiny, tactile surfaces like marble, travertine, concrete or polished stone with earthy artwork that mirrors our local landscapes. Abstract sanddune swirls, ocean horizon lines, and clayinspired sculptures all find a natural place in this new chapter of coastal style.
Curves
This is where modern meets organic. Cleanlined, modular lounges are paired with side tables boasting rounded silhouettes or rough-
hewn wood textures. Brass and rattan co-exist happily with slim black steel or chrome legs. In other words, form and feeling are finally getting along. Those sculptural shapes, whether in a chair, artwork, or lighting, bring in a subtly feminine energy, offsetting the minimalism of modern design with softness.
The design palette of 2026 leans toward rust, amber, stone, olive, ochre, and cinnamon, colours that speak of terra firma as much as tide. Small shifts in tone make a big difference: a creamy linen cushion edged in natural jute, or a sandstone-hued throw draped over a pale sofa, instantly adds life to what once might have felt flat.
Even metals are warming up. Brass, gold, and muted bronze are edging out silver tones, reflecting our love of sunlight and soft radiance rather than stark shimmer.
Whether you live oceanfront or simply wish you did, the Modern Organic Coastal trend invites you to bring that sense of calm connection home.
So this season, trade the whitewashed look for something a little more honest, a little earthier. Sink into layers of texture, surround yourself with natural warmth, and let your interiors ebb and flow like the tide.
The Australian coast has grown up - and it’s never looked better.

JOYCE CONSTRUCTIONS

COMMUNITY PRIDE:
From high-end residential homes to large-scale commercial projects, Joyce Constructions has built a reputation for quality, integrity, and a ention to detail. eir recent double win, taking out “Townhouse of the Year” at both the Master Builders Association (MBA) and Housing Industry Association (HIA) Awards for their standout Cornwallis project is a testament to that commitment.
ongratulations on winning the “Townhouse of the Year” at both the MBA and HIA Awards for your Cornwallis project. What does this recognition mean to you and your team? It means a lot to us.
That job was a big effort from everyone, our trades, suppliers, and the guys on site who put in the hard yards. To have it recognised by both the MBA and HIA is a really proud moment. It’s nice to see that all the detail and care that went into it didn’t go unnoticed.
The Cornwallis project was praised for its liveability and design within a tight site. What were the key challenges and design goals? Yeah, the site definitely kept

us on our toes. Space was tight, so we had to get creative with layout and structure to make sure both homes felt open and functional. The goal was to make them feel like standalone homes, not just a duplex. We focused on natural light, privacy, and flow, all the things that make a home feel good to live in.
Take us through the townhouses and some of the key elements that make this project a standout? They’ve got a really nice balance between design and practicality. We used high-end finishes but kept the layout simple and clean. There’s a coastal feel without it being over the top. It’s modern, warm, and just a nice place to be. That’s what makes it stand out for me.
Your work spans both residential homes and large-scale commercial. How do you balance those very different worlds?

It’s definitely a juggling act, but it works because we treat every job the same way. The systems and structure we use on the big commercial jobs help us run the smaller residential ones smoothly, and the attention to detail and design focus we bring to houses lifts the quality of our commercial projects. They feed off each other in a good way.
Speaking of commercial projects, you have just completed renovations at Club North Haven, what was the scope of that project and what are you most proud of? That was a good one. We refurbished the dining and bar areas, all while the club stayed open, which is never easy. The team did a great job keeping things running smoothly. What I’m most proud of is the end result, it’s fresh, modern, and gives the club a whole new energy, but it still feels like the local everyone knows.

Your team has now collected several industry awards across different categories. How do you maintain that consistent level of quality across projects of varying size and budget?
Everyone knows what standard we expect. We don’t cut corners, and we stay involved from start to finish. Whether it’s a big commercial build or a smaller residential job, it all comes down to pride in what we do.
We’ve built a really solid team and we’ve worked with a lot of the same trades for years. Everyone knows what standard we expect. We don’t cut corners, and we stay involved from start to finish. Whether it’s a big commercial build or a smaller residential job, it all comes down to pride in what we do.
With a growing portfolio of residential and commercial builds, what’s next for
We’re continuing to grow across both sectors while staying true to our roots as a local builder. We’ve got some exciting high-end residential builds kicking off, a few major commercial projects in planning, and we’re always exploring ways to integrate more sustainable building practices into our work. The goal is steady, considered growth, quality over quantity, always.
Finally, if you had to describe Joyce Constructions in one sentence, what would it be? A local team that takes pride in building high-quality projects, done properly, every time.
