Yt DiNgo, aka Travers Ross, has spent many years overseas in his career as an artist in the world of music, dancing and performing. He has been home on Gumbaynggirr land, recently performing at Splendour in the Grass, and enjoying connecting with home again. We caught up with him about what he’s planning next.

Y

ou’re about to take off overseas to do some self discovery, why did you decide to embark on this journey? It’s so phenomenal how much of the self there is to discover! I started that journey today flying out of Gumbaynggirr. Something deep inside the self has been thinking about this trip for a long time. It has just got to a point where there were too many clear signs to ignore. The pressure just grew and here I am, so excited for the unknown and walking forward as usual with an open heart and mind. The journey is about the deep roots that have been taken from my ancestral lines over time. My ancestors, I feel, are calling me to the lands they knew best. My grandfather Barry Ross who was known very well locally for his sport and architecture just left his body recently and has inspired me to walk this new path too. Also my companion Nevaeh who was a Samoyed left her body in the same week and many of the reasons why I stopped touring overseas and been home was to spend more life with her learning on the lands I was born. She taught me so much and inspired so much in me and my projects. So I am feeling very free to adventure with two very special grins in my imagination. Both lives that were lived full in gratitude. Time to sing and dance up those ancestral lands! Why did you decide that this was the right time to take on this journey? Early this year I was asked by Yolngu First Nation international touring company Djuki Mala to come and facilitate a process I use in creating arts. It’s one of a kind this process as I created it haha but my

You’re currently performing at Splendour In The Grass. After spending so much of your career overseas, what has it been like to perform on home soil again? I enjoy performing for my friends here – especially when we’re thick in the mud singing out to the skies, embracing the fact we’re living on a planet in outer space! They understand my story and many witnessed me grow. I sense they desire my authenticity, unorthodox intentions and discoveries I’ve made to be shared. I get a lot of love for my steps of bravery, exploration and effort 16 COFFS COAST

on home soil is fun but they do appreciate outsiders more than their own even if it’s interstate. We only have to look at the festival line-ups on the posters that are posted on our Mid North Coast. We have capitalistic clicks and gate keepers in this reality and I will leave this earth with them gates damaged with a more honest and open industry. Nothing’s stopped me and my journey with self frothing on my creativity, growth and the people I have given and received from that make it all worthwhile. My creations are like journal entries. Some are appreciated and some go by like clouds. This year I performed Splendour with X Bangarra dancer Waangenga Blanco’s performance work called Black Rainbow. I also featured my single ‘WTFU’ remixed and performed live with Minyangbal Dj, RedBelly. It’s nice to be collaborating, creating and being lead by First Nations artists. Learning their dialogue with their country is important. Serving country is serving me and the generations to come. Art plays a massive role in what I have learnt. The arts is a reflection of the culture we live, so if ya don’t like the art that surrounds you know that artists are just expressing their truths and experiences of what they are receiving. Even if you think it’s fake it’s still a reflection of the this culture and you maybe need to find the authentic artists that may not be easy to find. But we are here, loud and My creations are clear! Just listen or see like journal yourself deeper and we entries. Some are will open our curtains appreciated and some to you when you are go by like clouds. This ready to experience. year I performed Ya know, I have thoughts that I feel Splendour with X travelling the depths and need to be heard by Bangarra dancer traversing worlds. I feel I am a part of the people that are arts overseas it always seems like steps too far creating identity for this Australia culture, like here for people understand. I don’t say this it or not. But working as an artist is possible as arrogantly, it’s just my experience when I share I have proven over time. I am happy, healthy my story to Australian audiences. Performing and I don’t have to teach. I choose to, these

days, as I have people or groups I enjoy teaching. Many do to make a regular wage – most only teach and never get to flex their skills as a career. Some choose to be just teachers and I respect that. But I learnt skills to put them in action on the stage, in front of cameras etc. I also think a lot of the work is educating the audiences. Contributing to our arts even by just audience participation. Showing ya love towards a performance that makes you feel something. How to pay artists including artists local to you. You have had an extensive career in dance and performing, how do you feel you have evolved over that time and how is that reflected in your art? I have 6 seasons with 10 episodes to create if anyone wants to fund and get this story in the world, maybe Netflix? My experience needs to be heard for the next generations and I find pretty entertaining. Especially being from the Mid North Coast. My experience is a path I have created and this story has been so thrilling, so eye and ear opening that’s for sure. It’s too much to put into this interview but my evolution has made impacts and my gratitude for this journey is overwhelming. Many artists go overseas to pursue their big dreams. What could do to celebrate and build up our artists in Australia? I could say I lived the dream in this continent but I had to get it myself. To be flexible not just in the body! To be driven everyday! I was creating a path that no-one I know was living. Pay career artists well and don’t treat artists like trends. Artists are in your life from the moment you wake to the moment you sleep. Do you see us and acknowledge us? We give you reason and we give you freedom. We are out in the open and quietly in the backgrounds. The arts and artists should be respected as any other industry. You’re working on an album and have other creative projects in the works, can you tell us a bit about them? Yes! I’ve not started the physical process for the album yet but the thought ideas and requests are there. I believe this trip ahead of me holds the key to unlock the door to a stream of sounds to come through me to add to what’s there already. I have projects that surround the album and even maybe a new way of how an album is presented. The last few years have been eventful for you, what do you hope the next few have in store for you? I would love to bring attention to my personal story, once I have been inspired by those ancestral lands. Having the right platform – maybe it won’t be on this continent. I hope I get to share my story through my own senses and ways around the world, and it brings the heart of people to the forefront. I know the art from practise has the ability to but maybe it needs the right business partner. I know I’ll bring it back home when people are ready for it. COFFS COAST

Lachlan Mifsud is a local Rugby League player who is showing signs of big things to come. He has been participating in the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs Junior pathways system, representing the North Coast, and even captained the U17’s Malta squad in a Heritage match against Lebanon, while still playing with his local Coffs Harbour team.

H

i Lachlan. When did you first start playing footy? I began playing as a 6 year old at first in the under 7’s as there was no under for my age group, and I played all my junior career at the Rebel Coffs Harbour junior comets spanning over 11 years, along the way I won two premierships in the 14’s and 15’s, was part of the of the NRL RISE program run by Neil Henry and Mick Castle for 3 years. I got the opportunity to represent Group 2 in development squads and then play in the North Coast Bulldogs under 16’s Andrew Johns Cup team, before moving into the senior grades with Coffs Harbour this year. What do you enjoy most about the game? What I most enjoy about the game is the competitiveness and the challenges that come with every new game and training session. It challenges me to be better every game and to not become complacent. I enjoy the physicality of the game and the gladiator-like 20 COFFS COAST

nature that the sport has. I enjoy the bonds and Through this year I have represented the camaraderie that are created on and off the North Coast Bulldogs in the Laurie Daley Cup field. The boys you play with do become like under 18’s Regional Competition, as part of brothers, and that is a big part of what rugby the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs Junior league has always been pathways system, where about. Playing with your we made it right through mates and putting your to the grand final, I enjoy the all in, out on the field unfortunately coming physicality of so you don’t let your up short. I have played mates down so that is in some school footy in the game and the a big thing to me and the Combined Catholics gladiator-like nature something I really enjoy Schoolboys pathways that the sport has. I about the game. Now as reaching the state team enjoy the bonds and well helping out with the trials in Sydney. Here camaraderie that juniors when I am able locally I play for the Coffs are created on and to give back a little bit, Harbour Comets who off the field. because it’s important I have represented in to remember the people under 18’s, reserve grade that helped you at that and first grade this year. age and the fun side of it still needs to be there. I have had the opportunity to play and You’re playing quite a bit at the moment, captain a game for the Malta under 17’s through a season who do you play for and Heritage Squad against Lebanon in June. At what’s your preferred position? the moment I have played around 30 games

already this year with a month of regular season games and finals left. I am versatile enough to play any position in the forwards as required for the team, but I prefer to play lock as it suits my defensive work rate through the middle of the park, I feel that’s where I am best suited and can help a team the most either ball playing yardage runs. What do you feel are your strengths in the game and what do you find most challenging? My strength, conditioning and diet over the last 3 years has really seen me improve my overall game. I love the contact of defence and my workrate is high which means I can play at a higher level for longer periods. My talk, mindset, intensity, enthusiasm, game understanding and leadership are all strengths I bring to the team and I want to build on these further. Being in the Bulldogs development pathways has provided me with an opportunity to work on these attributes. I continue to work on developing my game by listening and putting into practice the feedback from club and rep coaches, senior players and NRL/NSW Development Officers and my family’s support. Not trying to do everything on the field, getting too excited and wasting energy is a challenge at times remembering to do my job first then help teammates as Bulldogs Pathways Managers Dave, Craig and Jason have explained to me. Rip Taylor the head coach at Coffs has given me opportunities to play 1st grade that has really

opened my eyes and encouraged me even more to train hard to achieve my goals. You have recently represented Malta in the under 17’s squad at the Festival of Rugby League Heritage match, what was it like to take to the field for your country of origin? It was a massive honour to be able to represent the country that my family is from and represent my heritage. Also to be able to captain the team as well was very exciting and I was very proud to be able to do so, it just added to the experience. I am very grateful for that opportunity from the coaching staff, for trusting me with leading the team. To be able to run out for Malta was pretty surreal to see the passion that people have for the country and to be able to play not only for my family but for the rest of the Maltese community as well was really special. Malta has now made it into the top 10 International Nations for the first time so I’m hoping there could be further opportunities there as well. Can you tell us about your family’s connection to Malta? My connection to Malta is through my Dad’s father. Pop was born in Hamrun, Valletta and came to Australia when he was 4 years old, with his parents and brother. They lived in Sydney before returning to Malta, then they came back again when he was older. We have extended family in Sydney and we still have relatives over in Malta. I am very proud to have Maltese heritage and be a part of that community. We lost my uncle earlier in the year and my grandfather currently lives in Canberra

but has been quite ill and was not able to attend the game, so this meant a great deal to me and my family. What amount of training are you currently doing to stay on top of your game? My training load is pretty heavy at the moment, I have strength and conditioning sessions at Genesis Gym 4 times a week to complete programs supplied to me by the Bulldogs that include weights, power, sprints and mixed fitness along with 3 field sessions a week with Coffs, playing 1 or 2 games on the weekend. I am about to start high performance training with the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs with other current contracted players and others who they have identified in the area. Along with this I also get in the water a fair bit to help with my recovery and do swim sessions especially after games. You can pull up pretty sore so by doing that it helps freshen the body up to do it all again the next week and make sure that I can perform at best every week. What’s the footy dream for you and what steps are you taking to reach that dream? The dream is to play NRL and make a career from playing footy. I would love to play Origin for New South Wales and for the Australian Kangaroos and win an NRL premiership, to achieve this I have put a lot of effort and time into my training and diet and I will continue to to do this, I will also look at areas in my game to improve and take on advice given to me by coaches and mentors that will allow me to take my game to the next level and improve further. Thanks Lachlan. COFFS COAST

“For a bloke from Cardiff, who’d spent a few years touring round Australia, to find himself on the other side of the world sharing the stage with the likes of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, INXS, and yes, even a band room with Spinal Tap was something beyond my wildest imagination,” says Dave Gleeson.

Dave Gleeson says of the recording process: “The plan was always to re-record the album for this milestone. We just didn’t realise we’d be recording under these circumstances. One of the things that we’ve always loved about the recording studio is that it’s a bunch of blokes, locked away in our own world creating and mucking on. The band will perform ‘All For One’ in its entirety from start to finish for the very first time.

MARINE ANIMALS M A K E C O N S E R V AT I O N E D U C AT I O N F U N !

What’s new at Dolphin Marine Conservation Park? In the July school holidays, delighted children and their parents were surprised with a special visit from a real mermaid! Life Sciences Manager, Tiga Cross told us how this magical creature is inspiring young people.

T

ell us more about this mermaid?

We are always looking for creative and interesting ways to encourage our guests to learn more about marine animals and conservation. Our team has wanted to invite a mermaid to holiday with us at the park for a few years and this year the timing was perfect. We asked “Coral the Conservation Mermaid” to make Dolphin Lagoon her home and engage with children and inspire them to learn more about caring for our oceans, and add some extra joy. How did the dolphins interact with Coral? Coral made friends easily with Bella, Jet and Zippy, our bottle-nosed dolphins, and occasionally swam with them which thrilled young children and their parents! Kids often gathered at the underwater viewing windows

to catch a glimpse of Coral swimming underwater with our curious and playful dolphins. What important messages did the conservation mermaid share? Our vision is to inspire young people to learn more and care more for our oceans and the precious marine wildlife that inhabit our seas. Coral shared the story of one of our past rescue dolphins, Calamity, who had to be rescued twice due to fishing line entanglement. Kids also learned about our Seal the Loop Program which has resulted in our team collecting over 250 km of discarded fishing line and thousands of pieces of fishing junk in special bins along the Coffs Coast. Will Coral be coming back to Coffs Harbour? Absolutely! The feedback has been fantastic and we’ve received many enquiries from

people wanting to know if the mermaid will be back next holidays. Visitors can plan ahead and pre-book their “Meet the Mermaid” experience for the September school holidays online now. What else is happening at the marine park? Our successful Animal Carer Experience (ACE) program will run again next September school holidays. This workshop is perfect for kids keen to get a taste of what it’s like to be a marine animal carer. To learn more about the September school holiday activities and book an experience, go to dolphinmarineconservation.com.au/ tickets-all/ To help our marine animal rescue, rehabilitation, release and conservation programs, please donate to: https://bit.ly/ HelpDolphinMarineRescue COFFS COAST

H

ey Kaiyai. Tell us where your journey of dance and performance began? For my journey we need to go back in time, to the mid 90s. My mother said “I kicked so much in the womb, I would either be a dancer or a footballer.” In preschool I won the best dancer award, when I was only one year of age. At 3 years old I decided (Yes! I decided) to start jazz dance classes which sparked my love for dancing and performing! My Love for performing even inspired my preschool teachers and carers to perform, as my 32 COFFS COAST

performance you would find me trying to direct her in the scene. Totally intending to make the performance better. But, truly just being a perfectionist and slightly OCD. Unfortunately, Indie passed away from her battle with Lupus, when she and I were around 11 years of age. She truly was such a loving, pure soul. A big inspiration in my life. and performance over the years, can you tell us about some of them? Before learning to walk, I danced. At the age of 5 I found my main childhood focus, Ballroom Dancing, leading me to completing 13 years of lessons, competing and winning titles all up and down the east coast of Australia. Other dance training includes 7 years of Tap, 6 years of Jazz, 2 years of Ballet and many workshops in Salsa, Flamenco, Burlesque and Bollywood. Music and Acting-wise my training has spanned from Acapella choirs with my mum as a child with Fiona and Kirsten Mackenzie, and Acting Classes at age 5 under the tutelage of Beckley Vincent (who is the head of Acting for Tamba Theatre Co.). But, the majority of training/learning my craft came from performing in over 30 plays, musicals and

together growing up. I couldn’t have asked for a better human to look up to in Life. Where did you study performing arts? My foundations and training in the Arts have come from an array of dance, drama, music schools, theatre groups and just general performing. Majority of my craft was learnt locally, treading the boards around the Coffs Coast. But as an adult I furthered my education, studying Musical Theatre at Sydney’s Academy of Film, Theatre and Television. You’ve trained in many styles of dance

pantomimes at both the Bowraville Theatre and Jetty Memorial Theatre. You sometimes perform in drag. How did that start out? My love for drag has been a long one. If you go far enough into my past, you will find I did my first drag performance for a close family friend’s 50th – despite my mum’s apparent concern, as the majority of the audience were her work colleagues. But funnily enough most thought I was her beautiful daughter (people’s exact words). What do you enjoy about doing drag performance? For me drag is another character. I see myself as a female impersonator and not truly a drag queen. Along with being one of Australia’s only, if not the only, straight Drag Queen. Crazy I know! But I love being able to blur the line between society’s ideals of Masculine and Feminine. The gender illusion is a crazy breakable construct which, through drag, empowers and strengthens our understanding of ourselves, leading to the acceptance of all. Continued over... COFFS COAST

You have recently formed the theatre company Tamba Theatre Co. here in Coffs, what made you decide to start your own company? Tamba Theatre Co. came from finding a gap between study/unrepresented talent and Professional Theatre. I want to create a bridging path of sorts, giving creatives like me not only a platform, but paid gigs and work. Can you tell us about some of the performers you will be working with at Tamba? So, the performers that I have the pleasure to either direct, produce or perform with will range from local talented singers, actors and dancers to Australia’s top Burlesque performers, musicians and actors. Tide SEEKER

KIERAN MARSHALL AND ELLIE WINZER

Kieran Marshall and Ellie Winzer are the locals behind the clothing brand Tide Seeker. With humble beginnings it is gaining momentum and we expect to start seeing it more often on the streets of the Coffs Coast and beyond!

H

ey Ellie and Kieran! Kieran, you create the designs for Tide Seeker, can you tell us about how those first few designs came about and why you decided to start printing t-shirts? Back in 2020 when Covid first hit, my hours were reduced. I found it pretty amazing how expensive surf wear was and thought I could create an interesting and unique design and get it printed cheaper than buying one in the shops, so I did. I took inspiration from my work as a marine scientist and the things I love about the coast and created those first designs. It wasn’t long before friends and family were asking me to make them some as well, and Tide Seeker evolved from there as an affordable surf, street and leisure wear brand. 36 COFFS COAST

focus

When did you first start working together and how did it all fall into place? It’s something that Ellie had been thinking about for a while, wanting to get back into retail and fashion but wasn’t sure where to start. She loved Kieran’s designs and the brand name but always thought Tide Seeker could be so much more. Ellie and Kieran had chatted about this at hockey training and games and Kieran always said he just didn’t have time and didn’t know where to start with women’s and kids’ clothing. It was one day in November 2021 that Kieran posted something on social media. Ellie and her husband got talking about Tide Seeker and impulsively messaged Kieran asking where he saw Tide Seeker going in the future and if he’d be keen to chat to Ellie about teaming up to expand the brand. From there we sat down together and began

to build ideas of what could come next, how to set it all up and what we both wanted to achieve from Tide Seeker. Ellie, your family has a background in fashion and retail, when did you decide you wanted to get into the family trade? Before having kids and moving from Northern Victoria to Raleigh, I was a school teacher. I’ve been a stay at home mum and helped on our family run dairy farm since moving here and it felt like the right time to try something new. I’ve always loved fashion and retail after growing up with my family’s long standing shoe business of 57 years. I always loved the idea of having my own brand of some sort, something I could put my name to and have ownership of. Something that when people asked “What’s Tide Seeker?” I could answer “That’s my clothing and

While these products are still a large focus of ours, we’ve introduced a full women’s and kids’ range in various colours in these products whilst also adding women’s and girls’ dresses and playsuits. This winter we also introduced our first pair of women’s and men’s track pants. We’ve introduced more feminine graphics and a range that is quite versatile and practical for an active and social lifestyle. You are both locals to the Coffs Coast, and you also pride yourself on designing, printing and stocking your clothing line locally. Can you tell us about some of the other local people that you work with? Since starting Tide Seeker, Kieran has used local printer Zevo Global. When we started collaborating, continuing to use local businesses was something really important to us. It provided more comfort to oversee the production and has allowed us to build great relationships throughout the whole process. We use two local printers, Zevo Global for our trucker hat and stubby holder printing and Coffs Coast Screen Printers for our I took clothing printing. Both inspiration have been incredibly from my work as a accommodating and great marine scientist help in developing our and the things I products. Their attention merchandise label”. Supporting local businesses and having our products sold locally is really important to us, something we want to expand on and continue doing long term. Your business is in its early days, what has the process been like so far from your first ideas to getting it up and running? From the time we started collaborating we hit the ground running. We immediately started talking to accountants, wholesalers, printers etc on advice of how to get things up and running. Kieran began creating new designs. We then selected the most prominent summer vibe designs, chose the garments and colour combinations for the range and began the printing process. We wanted to get our first full range out by the end of Feb and we were close when launching our new website and first full Men’s, Women’s and Children’s range in mid-March. With Kieran continuing his work at the Dolphin Conservation Park it was often a quick run down and catch up chat over the phone, at hockey training or text message to keep each other up to date on what we were up to. Once we had the products and launched, everything calmed down and we hit a good rhythm. What sort of response have you had to your designs and what inspires them? Our designs are inspired by all things coastal. The ocean, its animals, its surrounds, nautical elements and exploring everything the Coffs Coast has to offer. We wanted to create a range that is versatile, interesting and comfortable. One that emulates our slogan Explore, Seek, Discover. Where can people get in touch or see more of Tide Seeker? tideseeker.com has all our Our website products available, many photos and great size and colour ranges to choose from. PFLAG with SAM DAWSON

from Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays

This month I am honoured to bring you Atlas’ story as recorded by Wendy Ifrach from Allegra School - a first hand account that I am sure you will appreciate…

H

igh school can be an awkward time of hormones and homework. Sadly for some it’s also a time of experiencing homophobia, with a lack of understanding and acceptance for gender non-conforming and trans people a common experience. As a confident 16-year-old student, Atlas Domberelli openly identifies as nonbinary and uses the pronouns, they/them, but this hasn’t always been the case. “I started in the public school system then, seeking a more challenging academic environment, transferred to a private school,” Atlas said. “At that school I experienced transphobia. I didn’t have supportive friends in my year, there wasn’t acceptance for young people who might be questioning gender or identity. “To cope I flew under the radar – I found if you put your head down and did well academically you would draw less attention. I began building a façade and keeping to myself, I even wore religious jewellery so teachers wouldn’t notice me. It was pretty isolating.” Atlas did have one friend who they felt comfortable enough with to start a 40 COFFS COAST

conversation. “I think I always knew I felt differently from many of my peers but it wasn’t until early in Year 9 that I was able to voice it,” they said. “I was talking with a close friend about gender and they mentioned they were questioning theirs – it felt so good to be able to say out loud ‘me too’, it was validating for both of us.” Approximately 18 months later, Atlas had the conversation about questioning their gender and identifying as being nonbinary with family members. “That’s not an easy conversation, you can’t be sure of the reaction, but my family, especially my mother, were all so supportive even if there were a few misunderstandings in those early days of explaining how I was feeling.” Atlas also discussed their feelings with friends attending another school. “I had a couple of friends at Allegra School Coffs Harbour, we got talking and when they heard how things were for me, they encouraged me to switch schools.” Allegra School Coffs Harbour is a small, independent school catering to Year 9 and 10 students who find learning and/or socialising in mainstream schools challenging.

“It felt amazing to be accepted. No more pretending. At the enrolment interview they asked about my preferred pronouns, it was normal conversation, no big deal. I felt like I could finally breathe and be myself. My family noticed a change in my outlook almost immediately. I’ve always been a positive person but now I was happy again.” Atlas is also on the autism spectrum. “It presents differently for everyone, for me it’s a failure to pick up on social cues and being easily overwhelmed in a noisy, highly active environment. Moving to Allegra I felt I had less on my plate – a small school with less students and an acceptance of who I am just took so much stress away. “My advice to other young people who are questioning is to take a step back, re-evaluate how you feel and seek a safe space. Stay connected, get support/counselling, look online for connections, and find your tribe even if that means different friends or a different school.” PFLAG is here to give help, support and information to families and friends of all gay people right here on the Coffs Coast. pflagcoffscoast.com PFLAGcoffcoast

Within a few short years, Coffs Harbour will be a bypassed city. Rather than slowly making their way through our CBD, travellers will stay on the M1 and save themselves 10-12 minutes on their journey.

O

ther towns and cities have greatly benefited from being bypassed. Our southern neighbour Port Macquarie has done extremely well despite being bypassed for decades.

But we cannot sit back and just assume that our city will thrive – it’s something we must work on. The long-term sustainability of our city depends on the creation of great spaces for tourists and locals to enjoy. Central to that discussion has been the Jetty Foreshores. There is one aspect to the Jetty Foreshores we can all agree on – the current situation must change. We are unique among coastal cities because rather than seeing opportunity in improving our waterfront, attempts to do so have been heavily resisted. We need a vision for quality open spaces. The recent redevelopment of the foreshores where the markets are currently held is proof that the community flocks to the improved waterfront, rather than the beaches immediately to the north or south of the precinct where there are 42 COFFS COAST

Myself and my wife, Claire and our 4 kids were planning to get to these shores a lot earlier but due to the start of the pandemic and lockdowns we found ourselves on a wee remote island on the west coast of Scotland called The Isle of Tiree for the last 2.5 years. ATTACHMENT STYLES & ADULT RELATIONSHIPS

F R O M BE YO N D T H E S U R FAC E COUNSELLING

COUNSELLING C O N V E R S AT I O N S

with JULIE THOMAS

Do you struggle with or have challenges in your relationships? To understand why we have challenging relationships, we need to know and recognise our attachment style; recognising our attachment style will help to build healthier relationship connections.

W

hat is Attachment? According to the attachment theory pioneered by British psychiatrist John Bowlby and American psychologist Mary Ainsworth, attachment or attachment bond focuses on the reciprocal tie between two people’s emotional connection formed with our primary caregivers and romantic partners. From an evolutionary point of view, attachments are essential for child development, ensuring a child’s psychological and physical needs are met. Bowlby believed that early attachment formed by children with their caregivers has an enormous impact that continues throughout life, often determining how well you relate to others and respond to intimacy throughout life. How do these attachment styles play out in adult relationships? The attachment theory is based on a number of attachment styles; secure, avoidant, ambivalent-anxious, and disorganised-disoriented attachment. Each of the four attachment styles has typical traits and characteristics, yet a person does not necessarily fit into a single attachment style category. Recognising different attachment styles featured in your history of intimate relationships is entirely normal. Attachment styles can change with major life events or even with other partners. The ideal way to look at these traits is to identify unhealthy behaviours and understand what needs to be worked on to improve your relationships.

Secure attachment style. Adults who have developed a secure attachment style can form secure and loving relationships with others. They can trust others and be trusted and are comfortable expressing their emotions openly. In relationships, they are not afraid of intimacy and foster emotional closeness. They do not fear being alone when their partner needs space or time away from them and do not depend on the approval or responsiveness of their partner. The following three attachment styles are known as insecure attachment styles. Avoidant attachment style. Avoidant attachment style has a pattern of a deep fear of abandonment, emotionally neediness and insecurity in the relationship. The avoidant attachment style often presents as feeling nervous about a partner’s unresponsiveness, separation from their partner and the perceived threat of losing the relationship. An avoidant attachment style often fears intimacy, getting close to and trusting other people. Adults with avoidant attachment styles have been described as ‘emotionally unavailable’, preferring to be independent and rely on themselves. Ambivalent-Anxious attachment style. Adults with ambivalent-anxious attachment styles seek and resist contact with their partner, often feeling like you are on a roller coaster. These individuals are sensitive and attuned to their partner’s needs; however, they are often anxious and insecure about their self-worth in the relationship. Fear of relationship abandonment and rejection might find them blaming themselves or telling

themselves they are not good enough and worthy of love. Disorganised-disoriented attachment style. Individuals with disorganised-disoriented attachment styles tend not to have consistent ways of engaging with others. A pattern of contradictory and misdirected behaviours are present, a push and pull dynamic. They want a committed, loving relationship on the one hand but fear and expect abandonment and rejection. They find trust difficult and might project their insecurities onto others, often making a situation stressful and a relationship challenging. Can you change your attachment style, and how? Fortunately, your attachment style can change, you cannot change your past, but you can change the present and future. It might be difficult at first to change perceptions and reset new habits and attachment styles. Try recognising your behavioural patterns; self-reflection can assist you in making sense of your interactions with your partner and make issues easier to solve. Find experiences you love to immerse yourself with and spend time with partners and friends who encourage and build you up. Remember, attachment styles are just coping strategies we learned when we were young. The better you understand your attachment style, the more healthy ways of coping and meaningful relationships you will experience. Kyle James is a competitive paintballer who plays mostly ‘speedball’ here in Coffs. We wanted to ask him all about the game and how it works, and if it really is as painful as some claim!

H

ey Kyle, tell us how you got into the world of paintball? It all started back on my 18th birthday in 2009. A group of my friends and family went out to play some paintball at the old field at Karangi, a bit of a boy’s day to celebrate my birthday. After that I was hooked. I continued to play more games with the local “ballers” as we call them. These were mostly scenario type games in a format called “Bushball”. Army games as a lot of people would call it. Later on I moved to central QLD where paintball was put on the back burner as fields out where I was were very scarce. I’d go to the odd scenario day here and there but nothing too extravagant. Shortly after returning back to Coffs Harbour, an old friend that I grew up with was constantly trying to get me to come back to paintball and try a different format that I had never played before called “Speedball”. Naturally a higher level of fitness is advantageous, however, paintball is accommodating to most levels of physical fitness. hat I learnt from my 12-year-old son: Last year my son was hugely into basketball. Man was he determined! Every single day he played, practised, talked about it, YouTube and Google searched it. He made it into the division 2 rep team, and I arranged for extra training sessions with the coach because he was so determined to get better and better. And yes, with that consistency, he improved incredibly! But in games, he didn’t play as well as he did when he was practising in the training sessions. There were two reasons for this: 1 – the real live games wouldn’t go strictly to plan, and there were a lot of variables that a person at this level of experience couldn’t be prepared for. 2 – every time he messed up, or he couldn’t execute the plan, or he missed a basket, he would get down on himself. He would dwell on each moment. You would see him shake his head, keep his head down and shoulders slouched. This then pressured him into performing worse in a downward spiral throughout the game.

t Lifeline North Coast, we are lucky to be supported by some incredible volunteers who make our services possible. We are now recruiting new volunteers, so if you’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you. As well as helping us care for people in our community, you’ll meet new people and learn new skills. Meet two of our volunteers Tony Judge Crisis Supporter, Mentor and Lifeline North Coast Ambassador Volunteer Lifeline is an important part of my life. I have been a telephone crisis supporter, and student mentor for 5 years. Since joining Lifeline I have seen the immense difference that it makes to the lives of people who are suffering distress. I would like to do as much as I can to support the work that Lifeline does and to help it grow. It is so important that we continue to work towards the prevention of suicide and provide the support that is so deeply needed by people who are facing a tough time in their life. Ian ENO Taylor Event organiser/ Fundraiser, Lifeline North Coast Ambassador Volunteer After losing both a workmate and friend in October 2021, and then hearing about the other truck drivers taking their own lives in the same month, I realised that there is a real problem. the right resources and backing can make a difference within our community.

North Coast trains volunteers in Telephone Crisis Supporter skills.

Being a volunteer for Lifeline means that I do my part to reduce the stigma to ask for help and to raise awareness of the support available. I work with the team at Lifeline North Coast to reach out to the truck driving community, to help reduce the suicide rates and help support the families that are grieving due to the loss of loved ones who have taken their own life.

Marketing & Events. People with fundraising and special events skills are all invaluable to us here. Volunteers with events and project management experience play a major role in putting on our events and making them a complete success.

I became a volunteer for Lifeline when I organised a small convoy through Coffs Harbour with intent to say goodbye to my mates who had taken their own life. Lifeline North Coast reached out to me to provide assistance and help me fundraise. Within less than two weeks we had a huge event and raised more money than first planned. I am helping make a difference and can see the impact that my role as a volunteer is making within my community. What kind of things do volunteers do? Our policy is to match people to suitable roles rather than the other way around, luckily our organisation is so diverse, there are jobs to suit almost everyone. Telephone Crisis Supporter. Every year Lifeline

Retail. Working in our shops is ideal for those with retail experience (or anyone who is just good with people). And if you have an eye for fashion labels why not become one of our soughtafter curators? We are also after electricians who can help us test and tag our electrical goods for sale. Warehouse & logistics. With all the clothes, furniture, and books we process, transport and warehousing help is much appreciated. How much time do volunteers need to give? It’s up to you. We value everyone’s contribution and know that everyone has different commitments they need to work around. Volunteer with us – it’s a rewarding experience. MIKE HIBBARD

Hibbards is a well known and widespread family owned business and they know a thing or two about building, after being in the game since 1968.

B

ruce, how did you get started in your business? I left school at 14 years of age and started in the building industry working with my father, Malcom Hibbard. I was thrown in to assist my dad on site as a labourer.

I knew every aspect of how to build a house. And then I eventually became a licensed builder myself in 1976 and began building homes in Narromine, a little town near Dubbo.

How has your business evolved since it began? Well, when I first started right back when I was 14, there were no common conveniences of today such as telephones, computers or even I began at the very sewage systems. Boy bottom doing all the have I seen some worst jobs and I wasn’t The more and changes. ingfisher Audio is the passion project of a father and son duo, Myles and Trevor Oliver-King. Born from a love of music and great sound, the brand was a natural progression from Trevor’s 40 years of experience as a furniture designer, creator and educator, and Myles’ obsession with speaker design and audio science. The pair have set out to create no-compromise, sustainable, locally hand-made speakers with beautiful salvaged Australian timbers. Trevor has brought his experience and ethos to Kingfisher. Each speaker features thick hardwood veneers cut from salvaged logs sourced from local arborists and selected by the pair for their colour

and interesting character. The process from tree to speaker is meticulous, but Kingfisher’s unique in-house method means each pair is unique and available in interesting timbers, including Buttonwood and White Cedar. Each log produces only a limited number of veneers, so if you come across a pair you love, act quick as all veneers are effectively limited edition!

What is your greatest achievement so far? Being the Course Superintendent at Sawtell Golf Club for the past 5 years has been my most rewarding achievement. Being able to create a great team culture to ensure the quality and presentation of the course continues in an upward direction. How do you measure success in business? We measure our success by aiming for repeat customers and growing our membership base. When golfers have a pleasing, positive and enjoyable round of golf, they are more likely to return and bring fellow golfers with them. We are always striving for visitor and member satisfaction.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your role? “Plan your work and work your plan”. We only have a few full-time employees here at Sawtell Golf Club, but we do have a large volunteer base to assist us with many projects around the course.

We have Ladies Gardening, Dad’s Army Maintenance, Cart Path Construction and Rough Mowing Crews. When everyone is working together to achieve a result that has been laid out and planned in detail, it is very satisfying. Most rewarding part of your job? Looking back at what we have achieved, and the changes we have made over the past 5 years at Sawtell Golf Club, we are very excited in the direction we are going now. We have many, varied challenges within the Turf Industry, with the weather I’d say being the most challenging. To see how our team pull together during these adverse conditions to get the job done, day after day is a credit to everyone, and a sense of team camaraderie is what I’m most proud of. Looking out over the course on a Friday afternoon, knowing we have done the best we can to present the course for members and visitors to enjoy.

COMMUNITY

TIMBER P A R T N E R S H I P S

Forestry Corporation NSW (FCNSW) and the Wauchope Show Society (WSS) have been working in partnership to upgrade facilities at the Wauchope Showground with donated timber through the Community Timber Partnerships program. We chat with Leah Moncrieff (FCNSW) and Neil Coombes (WSS) about the project.

L

eah, where did the timber come from? The timber was donated through our Community Timber Partnerships program. This program, between Forestry Corporation and Pentarch Forestry, was created to distribute local North Coast timbers water damaged by the 2017 floods. When we heard about the grandstands being built at the Wauchope Showgrounds, we approached the Show Society to see if we could help and provide beautiful hardwood timber for the seating. Neil, tell us about the grandstands and did the timber donation help? Our old timber grandstands were about 70 years old and in an extremely poor condition, with wood rot setting in, and were in dire need of replacing. We were given limited funds via Government grants so the donation of all of the timber for the seating by the Forestry Corporation of NSW saved us tens of thousands of dollars allowing the grant monies to stretch much further. Leah, are there any other timber partnerships in the area? We’ve donated timber to over 15 local community groups in the area under this program. We’ve donated to local schools, sporting clubs, museums, and local gardens.

H

CASEY ALEXANDER

i Casey! So great to meet you. Can you start by telling us a little bit about you…? I’m 17 years old and live with my mum and dad in Coffs Harbour. I have one older brother. I am currently studying my HSC at Coffs Harbour Senior College which I love. Most people would say I am creative with a strong passion for music and entertaining. I also play basketball for the Valley Braves and we have just won the U18 grand final this month! What got you into a sport like basketball? Back when I was in year 4, I changed from soccer to basketball, mainly due to my brother playing ball so it is something that runs in the family! I’m drawn to it for a few reasons, one that I am quite competitive and love to win and play well. Sport has given me great friendships across all different clubs and associations. It also has created opportunities to lead. Tell us about these leadership opportunities? When I am on court, either in practice or game times, I find I have real court awareness and can help players if they become a little lost, through instructions and lots of positive encouragement. I focus on teamwork and try to role model the right behaviours in the hope

that the younger players will follow my lead. I really enjoy helping them become better and I am looking forward to coming back next year in more of a coaching role. You mentioned that you are creative, how did that come about? In my younger days I enjoyed drawing and had the dream to become an architect, but when I got to year 6, I started to learn to play the guitar and that really started my love of music and performing. I had an amazing teacher who nurtured this love and concentrated on fun first, then learning the theory side. I started to sing along when I played and moved from guitar lessons to singing lessons when I was in year 10. It quickly became my passion. I started to write from there and now perform my original music across the Coffs Coast. Tell me a little more about how you are growing this musical talent of yours… I was chosen to be a featured artist in the Spectacular Schools Inspired Online Production last year and am in the final stages of the audition for this year. It has been an incredible experience and has taught me so much. I got to go to Sydney and learn my solo part and practice movements and last term I had the opportunity to be part of a music video where they came and videoed me at the Jetty. I am also involved in the Talent

Development Project in NSW which is for approximately 40 aspiring young singers and songwriters. We have themed workshops in Sydney once a month where we are challenged to create new songs or lines, learn about our industry and taught how to be resilient when pursuing a career in music. I would not have been able to do this program without the encouragement from my music teacher and mentor at school. She has pushed me to believe in myself. With this school year now coming to an end for you what are you thinking about doing next year? I have been thinking that I will take a gap year to really focus on writing and releasing more original music and performing across the coast and beyond. I am excited that I will be able to spend more time on something that I love doing. After that I would like to study at University – something related to the industry. I have loved catching up with you Casey, before you go what advice would you give other young people? My biggest advice would be that there are no bad ideas, especially in song writing. Try and be unique and interesting. Take time to see things differently and believe that you or what you are trying to achieve is worth it. Thanks Casey.

Jiaqi (Sophie) Shen had never heard of occupational therapy until she went on a whirlwind trip backpacking around Australia.

chance conversation and some Google research led her to consider this growing health discipline as her next career move. Not long afterwards, she applied for a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at Southern Cross University in Coffs Harbour, a city she had visited twice on her backpacking travels. “I worked in marketing for five years in China. My background is in business but I didn’t like the jobs because of the pressure,” Sophie said. “I thought, what could I do to change my career? But at the time I didn’t have any idea. So, I had a two-year gap year travelling around Australia.” “This course is meaningful and helps others in their life,” Sophie said. “I want to do what is nice for others and also meaningful for myself.” Sophie is one of three international students to receive a Destination Australia scholarship to study occupational therapy (OT) at Southern Cross University’s Coffs Harbour campus. backpacking. Yuhui had been living in Broome on a working holiday visa for twoand-a-half years when she began researching jobs that would allow her to work both in Australia and China. She decided OT was the course for her. “I want my life to be happy. And people keep telling us that if you are willing to help others, it can bring you happiness. This degree

can help others,” Yuhui said. Meanwhile, fellow OT student Pema Choki, originally from Bhutan, decided to make the sea change to Coffs Harbour after working in Brisbane for three years. “Coffs Harbour is the perfect mix of a city and the country,” Pema said. “It’s right next to the beach which is really nice.” Pema said she likes going for walks along

the beach and hiking to the top of Muttonbird Island. Similarly, Yuhui said she enjoys the atmosphere and environment of living in a regional area. “I’m from China and my city is always very crowded. And sometimes if you are in a city, it’s very hard to calm down and focus,” Yuhui said. “Coffs Harbour is quiet and the atmosphere is good for studying. The environment here is also very good. We have mountains, we have oceans and we have forest.” The three international students are studying in Coffs Harbour with Destination Australia scholarships, which offer both domestic and international students the opportunity to study and experience living in regional Australia. The scholarships are valued at $60,000 over four years. Pema said the funds have offered great financial assistance. “It has helped me with my tuition fees tremendously,” Pema said.

Sophie said the scholarship allowed her to commit to a four-year degree. “It has given me the confidence to study for four years,” Sophie said. “It’s a long course for me.” Yuhui said she would not be able to afford to study in Australia without it. “It means a lot,” she said. The students are partway through the first year of their course. “It’s fun,” said Pema. “I haven’t started my pracs yet but I’m looking forward to it.” Helping clients with their day-to-day activities and assisting them to be more independent was an attractive part of the job for Pema, who plans to work as an occupational therapist after graduation. “It’s something really different from other health professions,” she said. Meanwhile, Yuhui said she found studying occupational therapy challenging at the start of the course but now feels confident in her

abilities. “At the beginning, I felt like I couldn’t do it because there were so many things I needed to remember,” she said. “I think you just need a plan and if you are struggling with something, just ask for help. “All the tutors are very nice. If you ask them questions, they are always willing to answer you. Now I feel like I have the confidence to pass.” Occupational Therapy is a diverse field of health practice. Occupational therapists adapt environments, activities or equipment to enhance participation in everyday tasks, assisting people of all ages and abilities to do what they need and want to do at home, work, school and in the community. Job prospects are robust. More than 96 per cent of Southern Cross Occupational Therapy graduates were employed shortly after graduation, according to Graduate Outcomes Surveys 2019-2021. The Southern Cross Bachelor of Occupational Therapy is a four-year, professionally accredited degree taught in purpose-built daily living laboratories in the new Health Sciences Building on the Coffs Harbour campus. COREY TUTT D E A D LY

S C I E N C E

Corey Tutt is a proud Kamilaroi man and founder of Deadly Science. He is passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and providing resources, mentoring and training to remote and regional schools with a particular focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. He has recently released his book The First Scientists to highlight First Nations people as the first scientists of our country.

H

i Corey. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you discovered and developed your love of science? I am a proud Kamilaroi man and I love all things STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)! I started my career off in the animal industry, working in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries and then one thing led to another and I ended up shearing alpacas for a couple of years. From that I worked for the RSPCA and Animal Welfare League, and then I moved on to working for the Garvan Institute as an animal technician, then from that I went to working for the University of Sydney as an animal technician. Then I became a research assistant for the Matilda Centre studying mental health and substances, how they work within different communities and how to better understand those conditions. Basically that’s really how I started my career in STEM 74 COFFS COAST

and from that moment I wanted to engage other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in science and STEM because I hadn’t really met many others in my career working in labs and working with animals, and I really just wanted to share experiences of not really following the traditional path into science but having to go the long way around. I just wanted to share that with young people and that led me to founding Deadly Science. You are the Founder and CEO of Deadly Science, when did the idea for this program come to you and why? Through my learnings and working with young people I found that schools in these communities were just critically underresourced. When I realised this I went to Dymock’s and dropped $1,000 on books and packed them up with every book I owned and sent them off, and then that one school turned into 40 schools! I needed a way to pay for it and so I got a second job and then finally set up a Go Fund Me which over its

lifetime ended up raising about $250,000 and from that moment we were able to build this organisation from the grass roots up that provides resources and mentoring to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids across Australia. I’m very proud of everything we’ve achieved, it’s taken a long road for us to get there. How do you decide on, and provide, what these communities need? Everything is well thought out, we don’t send anything that doesn’t have a practical solution. So basically we work with communities and schools, and they tell us what they’re looking at and we find resources that match what they’re looking at in the classroom. We work with community elders and teachers and sometimes we have to say some things might take time to build up, and we set up a bit of a wish list for them and we end up sending the resources out to them afterwards. What sort of benefits are you seeing for

kids with access to Deadly Science? name might be on the awards but really it’s a They are just getting so much more credit to all the kids that love science, that love confidence and they’re growing a lot, finding STEM and Deadly Science – the reason why I and exploring. They already naturally have the get these accolades is purely because of them. sciences in them, they communicate well, they You have recently released your book observe, they learn, they grow, but having ‘The First Scientists’, could you tell us a bit those resources helps to embed confidence in about it? young people to follow I’ve been sending those passions. I think thousands of resources There was nothing that that’s what Deady to remote schools and really out there Science is all about, nothing really around the for young kids to basically opening up First Nations lens, there explore science from an doors for young people was nothing really out to find what they love Aboriginal, Torres Strait there for young kids to and what they’re good explore science from an Islander, First People’s at, and I think that’s Aboriginal, Torres Strait perspective. So I decided really deadly. Islander, First People’s to create a book that I You were awarded perspective. So I decided could send out to these Young Australian of to create a book that I communities and kids the Year in NSW for could send out to these could pick it up and see 2020, how did it feel communities and kids Aboriginal and Torres to be recognised like could pick it up and see Strait Islander people as that for your work? Aboriginal and Torres scientists. Like all my awards, Strait Islander people they’re a responsibility as scientists. The other to the next generation, reason why I wrote it they’re a responsibility to the kids that we was a very valid reason – it’s important for all work with, to the communities and all the of us to own our history and own First Nations supporters that we share this with. All our people as the first scientists of this country and communities and kids need to see these it’s really important for us all to acknowledge awards as being accessible to them and my that.

What was the process like of writing and producing the book? The content wasn’t that hard to write, I had a collection of stories that I was playing with for a really long time before I had even decided to write the book. The permissions were hard, you had to contact all the relevant groups to talk about what was written and to see if we could get permission to write that story, so that was quite difficult, a lot of conversations and hours went into it. Once that process was done it all happened really fast, we suddenly had a pdf with all the designs and then a couple of months later the book turned up on my doorstep in its hard copy form. You cradle it to near death because it’s something that you’ve created and I’m actually really proud of it. It was a hard decision to make but I actually signed it for a child and sent it away. I just thought that the first copy was better in the hands of a kid and their community than mine, even though I would have loved to keep that first copy forever. Where can people find out more about Deadly Science and find your book? You can find out more about Deadly Science at www.deadlyscience.org.au and you can get a copy of ‘The First Scientists’ at any deadly book shop, you can find it at Big W and Booktopia among many others. Sprinkle AND PLAY CASEY MARTIN AND M O N I Q U E TAY L O R

Casey Martin and Monique Taylor are local sisters who both have a background in early childhood education and found themselves at a point of wanting to try a new path in their career at the same time. And so, Sprinkle and Play was born!

C

an you tell us a bit about Sprinkle and Play and the type of children’s play experiences you put together? Sprinkle and Play is a family run business that provides unique and engaging sensory play experiences to children on the Coffs Coast. Sensory play experiences stimulate children’s senses of touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing. We specialise in custom sensory parties, playgroups, take home kits, home setups, early childhood centre delivery, incursions and NDIS packages. Our setups include themed sensory play experiences that encourage child-led play. Sprinkle and Play design packages to suit your individual needs. We set up and pack up, taking the stress out of the mess! How did the idea for Sprinkle and Play come about? We were both at a point in our careers where we were looking for a change. I (Casey) was on maternity leave and wanted to spend the most amount of time with my boys (aged 10 months and 2½ years) and Monique had just left her job due to injury. We are both 76 COFFS COAST

trained early childhood educators and were already creating fun sensory experiences for the boys to enjoy, so thought maybe other families would enjoy them too. We had great support from our family, so we thought ‘why not give it a go and see where it takes us’. From there it has just organically grown over the past 9 months. What started out with a friends’ birthday party has now evolved into multiple bookings and regular playgroups. We look forward to seeing where it takes us next. Where do you usually set up these sensory experiences? So far, we have set up at local parks, community halls and in people’s homes. We really can set up anywhere that is flat. We bring gazebos for shade and floor coverings to contain the mess. We also run a weekly playgroup session on Fridays which is currently held at Sawtell Toormina Sports and Recreation Club. We hope to do more playgroups at different venues very soon. What are some of the materials you commonly use? We have a wide range of different equipment. We have large tuff trays, small play trays and play tables as well as a sensory

walk and perspex painting easel. As we cater our setups to young children, we generally use taste-safe fillers, especially for children that are still mouthing everything. This includes coloured spaghetti, salt, rice, and pasta. We also use a variety of cereals, coconut and much more. Water Beads are definitely a favourite with the older children. We make our own playdough, slime, and taste-safe dirt. We then add high quality toys and stainlesssteel accessories to enhance the play and transport children into small world imaginative play experiences. We love to support small local businesses where possible. How do you come up with new ideas for the setups you provide? Honestly, lots of our setups are created in the middle of the night while Casey is up feeding her littlest son. They generally evolve over time as we discuss different ideas. Often people approach us with a party theme based on their child’s current interest and we research the topic, buy some accessories, and start creating. We absolutely love designing new setups. Recently, we set up a Sonic themed party and we’ve also set up motocross, unicorns and NRL themed parties.

We have standard themes such as Under the Sea, Construction and Animal Adventure too. One of the best parts about starting our playgroup is that we get to try new themes, fillers, recipes, and activities. Some favourite playgroup themes so far have been Things that Go, Kids in the Kitchen and Bluey. There are endless opportunities for creativity and fun. What do you often see kids get out of this kind of playtime? What are the benefits of it? Children get so much out of sensory play! We often see children engaged for long periods of time scooping, pouring, and playing. Sensory play is both fun and beneficial to development in so many ways. It helps children develop both fine and gross motor skills as well as encourages language development and scientific thinking. Sensory play encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It builds children’s self-confidence and gives them opportunities to connect with other children. What sort of response have you had from kids and parents/carers so far? The response we’ve had from locals is overwhelming and wonderful. In the short time since opening, we’ve built a supportive community of parents, carers, and children.

SENSORY PLAY ENCOURAGES LEARNING THROUGH EXPLORATION, CURIOSITY, PROBLEM SOLVING AND CREATIVITY.

Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter really makes it all worth it. The children love our setups and exploring all the different textures, figurines, and utensils. The adults seem just as excited and intrigued by all our different setups, asking about various fillers and how we make them. It’s so fantastic to see the adults get involved with their little ones and experience it together, while also meeting new people. Since starting the playgroup we’ve seen many consistent and new faces each week. We also love seeing families recreate some of the play experiences at home and book parties with us. We love this new community we are building. If you’re looking for a listening ear or just a hot coffee (we have a coffee van come each week) while the kids play, it’s the perfect place. As sisters who work together on this, how have you found having a business together? We were already very close before starting our business and working together has only brought us closer. We are a good team because one of us likes to dream big and the other is a realist, so when we meet in the

middle the outcome is pretty awesome! We’ve naturally fallen into different roles that suit our individual talents and desired workload. Sisters, best friends and now business partners. It doesn’t get much better. What are your hopes and plans for Sprinkle and Play moving forward? We hope to continue to provide fun sensory play experiences for children on the Coffs Coast. We are not entirely sure of the direction we’ll go as there are so many paths we could take. Our ultimate dream would be to open a premises where families could come and play – rain, hail or shine – in a safe, fun, and exciting learning environment. We look forward to following the opportunities that arise, so encourage families to enquire with us. We would love to create something amazing for your little one! Where can people find out more? You can find us on Facebook and Instagram (@sprinkleandplay) where we post photos and updates regularly. We would also love to see you at 10am on Fridays for Sprinkle and Play playgroup. Thanks Ladies. COFFS COAST

NATHAN

SLATTER Nathan Slatter is a Steiner teacher at The Chrysalis School in Thora. He has been guiding his class through their learning journey since they first started at school, and where they would normally have to look at other options beyond Class 8, he is excited to be continuing the journey on into Class 9 and 10 with them.

H

i Nathan. Can you tell us a bit about how and why you got into teaching, and what you enjoy about teaching at a Steiner school? I was convinced to retrain as a teacher after discovering Steiner education through an acquaintance, Geo Scott, who taught at the Chrysalis School in the Thora Valley. The integrated curriculum, with an academic program designed around child development on a scientific and philosophical basis is fascinating, emphasis on wonderment and reverence for the rhythms of nature and the universe, as well as a strong appreciation for aesthetics and beauty as a part of all aspects of the curriculum, resonated deeply for me. You teach at The Chrysalis School, what has your journey been like there guiding your class through each school year? In many ways the past 9 years have been a journey for myself, my students and their caregivers. With so many academic, social, 82 COFFS COAST

emotional and physical milestones along the way, it has been incredibly rich. I came into this role knowing that the expectation was to travel through the years with the class and I’m delighted and honoured for the experiences. You have been with your class since they started school. Previously The Chrysalis School took students to Class 8. This year your class continues on into Class 9 and they will be able to stay through Class 10 as well. How did this change come about? A conversation during a parent-teacher interview was enough to water a seed waiting dormant under the soil: the much dreamed about ambitions of our school to again extend our offering to Class 9 and 10. “What are you thinking for your child when they finish Class 8?” I had asked a parent in my class, nearly two years ago. “Well Chrysalis has had Class 9 and 10 before right? Perhaps we should pursue that.” The parent answered. And so the conversation – and the life of the school for our oldest students – was born anew.

This potential connected with me, as a teacher, as well as what I felt was needed for these tricky middle years of high school. Being teacher of the first kids to again go through to Class 9 at Chrysalis, you must have been highly involved in planning? Can you tell us a bit about what you and the school community wanted for the Class 9 and 10 students? I wanted to put many things on the table; adolescent-focussed rhythm of the day, online components and distance learning, vocational elements, service to the community, project-based curriculum and heavy parental involvement with respect to communication. I felt that strong camp experiences were vital. I wanted to take the students not so much out of their comfort zones, but more away from their familiar environs – tech-free, isolated, beautiful wilderness and each other. Visioning Workshops facilitated by Sue Lennox of OzGreen were organised primarily as a means to glean the hopes and dreams of what the Class 9 and 10 journey could

look like from both the parents of Class 8 of Edinburgh program was confirmed as an and the students. Meanwhile programs were developed for Textiles, Woodwork, Blacksmithing and Spanish; drawing upon contacts within the community as well as the Steiner network. Class 9 students will have Macbook Air laptops, which are necessary for components such as film-making, music composition and everyday research and documentation. What has the response been so far from students, families and other teachers? The response from students has been very pleasing. The independence shown when the students manage themselves whilst on camp as well as the straddling of two campuses has been impressive. They have shared their journey thus far with bubbling enthusiasm with Class 8 students of Chrysalis, hoping to bring them along for the journey next year. Parents are thrilled that their children are keen to go to school and that the curriculum has emphasises community engagement and travelling to learn through the camps program. Class 9 teachers are bouncing new ideas off each other all the time, collaborating to integrate the curriculum and make it as meaningful and appropriate as possible. Have you started making any plans for your group’s Class 10 next year? Accreditation through NSW education body NESA is well underway with the Main Lesson sequence and elective subjects decided. Our program including Food Technology, Textiles, Woodwork and Music will be complemented by a foreign language program. Our Duke of Edinburgh program wraps up at the end of Class 10 with a six week camp to Arnhem Land, where students are based in an indigenous community helping to establish orchards and infrastructure for a more sustainable life. What do you hope your year group takes away from their time with you as teacher? I hope they are confident in their own skin and aware of their potential. Most already have firm ideas of what they’d like to do for specialisation through Class 11, 12 and beyond. I hope they continue to engage experts within their community who can guide and encourage the development of their passions and interests. COFFS COAST

an you tell us a little bit about your business? I’m the Artistic Director and owner of NAIDU Theatre Co (a family-run business with all of my Fijian Indian family working behind the scenes from all around the world with me!) and Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studio. WPAS serves as a training facility for lovers of all things music and the performing arts. NAIDU Theatre Co serves as an Independent Performing Arts Company producing original works, cabarets, and musicals. Currently our team is Directing/Choreographing Disney’s Frozen Jr for the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium and we’re in the midst of writing a new musical called ‘Girmit’ based on the Fijian Indian’s indenture in Fiji from 1879-1916. What’s your favourite part of the work you do? Working with an incredible community! ‘Shining a light on unity in diversity through the arts’ is what it’s all about for me. an artist. Operating two businesses has been the space I needed to be the artist I am. I love being able to be an artist at the core of everything I do now – from choreographing, to songwriting and composition to performing myself. I get to fulfil every artistic aspect of my life through my businesses. Who is your greatest influence in business? Fellow women in business that I have the pleasure to meet every week! Meeting women who own and run businesses whilst juggling motherhood, work, money and their own happiness. Being part of the Business Women’s Network and Woolgoolga Chamber of Commerce has really made me sit back and observe the incredible women I’m surrounded by, and their many influences over what I do. Every woman in business that I meet plays a huge role in what influences and shapes my next move and how I improve my own business. Have you always lived on the Coffs Coast? I’ve lived here since 2016. I never intended for Coffs to become ‘home’ but in the magic way this place works, it did! I’d just come off a big contract working in Mumbai as a Director and wanted a place to ‘rest’ before the next big adventure. I have family and friends in Woolgoolga and I came and stayed with them for a ‘breather’. Six months turned into six years and there’s no place like it! I love the

communities here, the passion the locals have for change and progressing forward. I really love our Arts community especially – so many like-minded people making incredible art and supporting each other. What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world? Our biggest challenge and limitations in business (from my experience) are our own belief systems formed as young children. The ‘personal’ and ‘self’ work is just as important as growing or starting a business because the longevity and balance that life requires of you needs to first come from a place of calm and clarity. Doing that ‘inner’ work, as cliched as it sounds, becomes the place you go to when times are difficult, things feel stuck and you’re not sure what your next move is. Your body and mind is your ‘home’ and it needs to be a place that you can safely go to and rest before coming back to kick some business butt! The safer your space is ‘inside’, the stronger mindset you can build for your business and not be knocked down as hard when it happens. with JASON BURLEY FROM BURLEY AGED CARE ADVICE

Three facts about meanstested fees Fees in residential aged care are means-tested, but the rules are complicated. This article explores the three key facts you need to know about meanstested fees.

P

roviding aged care in a residential service is expensive when you add up wages, equipment and other operational costs. The government pays most of this cost but you may be asked to pay a portion. How much you pay is means-tested, so the more you have in financial resources, the more you might be asked to pay – but only up to the annual cap of $29,399, with an overall lifetime cap of $70,559 (indexed). The rules for how the means-tested fee (MTF) works is not easy to understand. So what are the top three facts you need to know. 1.The fee is not evenly spread across the year The annual cap averages $80.55 per day, but you might be asked to pay a higher rate each day (up to $265 per day, based on an assessment of your care needs) until you reach the annual cap. Once you reach the cap you stop paying

the means-tested fee for the rest of that year. Other fees continue. Example: Martha’s means-tested fee (MTF) is calculated as $160 per day. She pays this amount (plus other fees) for approximately 184 days until she has paid an amount equal to the annual cap. Then no more MTF is payable until the next year. Unfortunately there might be a delay before Services Australia identify the cap has been reached and allow payments to stop. The provider will refund (or hold a credit) any excess that you have paid. 2.The cap applies to an anniversary year The annual cap applies to your anniversary year. This generally starts on the date you enter permanent residential care. But if you were receiving a home care package before the move, the year starts from the date your home care package commenced. This could see your first 12 months in residential care span two anniversary years and you may pay more than the annual cap

in that first 12 months. 3.The caps are indexed Every six months the annual (and lifetime) caps are indexed. You will need to chase the indexing cap, but once reached, the meanstested fee ceases for the rest of the year, despite any indexation during that time. This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. s a leader in local government, Coffs Harbour City Council is ‘committed to the pursuit of excellence’ and one of the largest employers in the region. As a diverse, inclusive and innovative organisation, our people put our community and customers at the heart of everything they do. We are passionate about providing opportunities for young people within the Coffs Harbour area through apprenticeships and traineeships. These opportunities allow our young people to commence a pathway into their chosen career whilst remaining within the local community. These trainee and apprentice opportunities also have the potential to extend to permanent roles through the ongoing professional development provided by Council. Apprenticeships and traineeships at Council are the perfect way to kick start a career as they combine formal learning and on-the-job

training in a safe, supportive environment. Council has many trainee and apprentice success stories, one of which is Kayla Wheatland. Kayla commenced her journey as a Stores and Procurement Trainee with Coffs Harbour City Council in 2020. Kayla was then able to apply and progress to a Project Support Officer role and is now working as the Corporate Planner in the Community Planning and Engagement team. “My biggest motivation for applying was upskilling myself, I was working in hospitality and really wanted to give myself a chance at a career,” said Kayla. “There were some challenging points throughout the traineeship, but the team I worked with were really supportive and wanted me to have a good experience. If you are interested in a traineeship or apprenticeship, just go for it! Especially if you really enjoy working and learning at the same time, it’s a really good experience.

Doing both at the same time was really beneficial for me; I got to do the practical work, while learning through study. I love how supportive everyone is at Coffs Harbour City Council. Everyone wants to see you learn and grow both professionally and personally. The level of care everyone has for each other means there are really good, connected teams.” From August, Coffs Harbour City Council is preparing to launch a significant number of traineeships and apprenticeship providing the perfect opportunity to begin a career in the community you know and love.

Buying a home is very stressful and purchasers sometimes lack confidence when making their final choice. Having started out with a “wish list” they find themselves sacrificing up to half of what they originally set their hearts on.

T

he problem is deciding which fifty percent to sacrifice, people get very confused about their priorities, especially if they “fall in love” with a property even though it does not actually meet many of their more practical needs.

It’s only natural that home buyers want to save money on the costs associated with their property purchase. They shop around for legal/ conveyancing deals, One way to removalists and so on. approach the Sometimes, especially issue is to re-negotiate on newer properties, the sale price to allow they decide that the recommended pest and for repairs. The best way to end up with your ideal home in the long run is to buy prudently from an investment point of view and plan to get your dream home second or third time around. Above all, make sure you don’t ignore the old wisdom about location taking up places one, two and three on your list of criteria. Decor, even house style and size can always be changed or improved but location and land size (apart from extraordinary circumstances) are basically there forever.

Focusing on location can help purchasers be more objective so they avoid letting their hearts rule their heads. Location aside, there are many ways of ensuring that you make a good buy from a structural and amenities point of view. Checking thoroughly before making an offer 102 COFFS COAST

can save time and money, it means you can rule out most of the properties that won’t come up to scratch before you spend money on a professional building report.

focus

Most real estate agents have a story or two of purchasers that were wiser after the event. The fact that a house is new doesn’t mean that a purchaser should bypass the pest report. White ants can enter even a new home if a tradesman has been careless. They have been known to enter via formwork that has been left around concrete steps, for example. Reports that cost a few hundred dollars could save thousands even tens of thousands of dollars if

the damage turns out to be extensive. Home buyers should make sure they use licensed tradespeople that have professional indemnity insurance. There should be no question of the buyer being out of pocket as long as the tradesperson is covered if they fail to analyse building faults that later become apparent. If your building and pest report does uncover problems that doesn’t automatically mean you should pull out of the sale. One way to approach the issue is to re-negotiate the sale price to allow for repairs. Prudent vendors usually see the wisdom of making adjustments to retain their purchaser. Sometimes vendors prefer to arrange for a tradesman to carry out the work before settlement takes place. Even a termite infestation doesn’t necessarily mean a purchaser should pull out of the sale. A surprising number of homes have had termites at some stage. It’s a case of quantifying the damage and taking a calculated risk. However, in the case of serious structural damage which is often unquantifiable it is usually safer to give up the idea of purchase no matter how much you like the property. The ultimate choice is up to the purchaser. Building and pest reports are a tool for assessing the property’s structural condition and ultimate suitability. In most cases they enable purchasers to reinforce the feeling that they have made the right choice.
