EDITOR'S LETTER This time of year, everything’s changing – the leaves, our wardrobes, our Starbucks lattes, just to name a few. Hard-pressed as we are to keep up with the trends, we’re changing, too. It’s been one year since we set out to bring you inspiration for your big day (and every day). In celebration of our first anniversary, we’re abiding by the traditions and bringing you paper – that is, we've re-emerged in print! Coming from the blog world, where I first began posting about the latest and greatest in Santa Barbara lifestyle trends, I truly appreciate the witty, approachable dialogue and in-themoment ability to create art through words and visuals. So far, I’ve found that the Internet is the perfect creative medium to inspire others by sharing the very things that inspire me. Over the last few years, Tracy and I have excitedly watched as the wedding and lifestyle blog world unfolded before our eyes. Flutter has given us a chance to combine our love of blogging with the “old-fashioned" magazine, resulting in our “e-mag,” if you will. We’re thrilled that we’ve been able to share our vision with you. We believe there's something about the traditional magazine that we'll always cherish, and we think you will, too. So, here it is, hot off the press: our freshly printed publication! Hold onto it, leaf through it, and even tear out favorite pages for your “real life” pin board. We couldn't be more excited to see our vision for every bride-to-be and pretty party purveyor come to life in your hands. Happy flipping!

the whole weekend was such a dream - so beautiful and full of love. The San Ysidro Ranch is such a gorgeous

environment that we just sort of added accents to the scenery so as not to smother it. We got married on May 4th. My husband is a Star Wars fan so our little motto quickly and lightheartedly became "May the Fourth Be With You"...

he has no excuse now for forgetting our anniversary! –The Bride

from the first piece of stationery to the day-of decor, the bride and groom maintained a vibrant and festive style that made our hearts... flutter.

Confetti Calling Dried Floral Confetti

Styled by Kelly Oshiro Photography by Arna Bee

28

We are crazy about confetti. Confetti (like glitter) makes everything better. With the change of seasons and texture on our minds, this project was inspired.

Air Drying Flowers 1. Flowers: Gather your flowers. Avoid wilted or unhealthy flowers, as these will appear to be dead when dried. Strip the excess foliage off (leaves, etc...) and cut stems down to your desired length. It's important to leave at least 6 inches for hanging purposes. 2. Separate + Bundle: Gather each flower type into small individual bundles. Secure near the base with twine or a rubber band. 3. Hang + Wait: Hang flowers upside down in a cool dry location. Make sure all the buds are facing the ground, as the flowers will dry in the same direction they are hung. Leave the flowers for 2 to 4 weeks to dry thoroughly. Check regularly, as they may need to be re-tied. 4. Finishing Spray: Once flowers are dried, give them a light misting with an aerosol hairspray to help set their shape.

Microwave Drying Flowers (a.k.a. Instant Gratification) For this process, and to achieve the "petal-look," we found that roses and hydrangeas work best. 1. Flowers: Strip the petals from the flowers and place on a microwave-safe dish. 2. Drying: Heat on high until the petals are no longer damp to touch, approximately 2 to 4 minutes depending on your microwave. 3. Finish + Use: Remove from microwave and let dry in a cool area. Use immediately or store in air-tight sealed containers.

Use as a decorative element on a table-scape.

Light Up the Night! Joy chose a variety of lanterns to create a soft and romantic glow upon sunset.

If you don't already know her, meet Joy. Her highenergy and innovative creativity can turn any secluded outdoor space into an elegant escape. Our hearts just about melted with this safari-esque inspiration that she designed. From the handcrafted feather shawl to the textural tabletop, to the gorgeous glittering Elie Saab dress - a desert-like affair is born. Very neutral, natural colors and textures were used throughout. Beige, cream, gray, silver and brown popped with indigenous greenery - created the chic and cultural vibe that stands before you.

Fall harvest is quite possibly our favorite season. The vineyard vines are in full bloom,

nature's colors shift to a palette of golden hues, there's a crispness to the air, a plethora of homegrown elements ripe for picking, and cozy affairs are in order.

We love small gatherings with good friends. Entertaining with the ease and the

comfort of one's own abode makes for the ultimate organic experience. With the arrival of the autumnal equinox, we are inspired to celebrate in style and hope you are too.

Hand-painted Menus

We are smitten over these sweet watercolor menus by Rebekah Miles. Want to make your own menus? See page 58.

Candle-lit Table Runner

With the food being the main attraction, Kelly chose to keep the table decor soft and clean with a neutral candle-lit glow.

Harvest Elements

Wheat, millet, astrantia and scabiosa were wrapped around the candles to bring in a cozy fall harvest feel.

Watercolor 101

6 easy tips to paint your own menus

Paper Choice

Use a heavier card stock versus a thin sheet of paper, as it can absorb the paint better.

Graded Wash

Always paint the darkest areas first. Instead of loading your brush with more paint for each subsequent stroke, dab your brush with clean water, thereby diluting the wash. It's better to err on the side of using more paint in the beginning. This may take some practice to finesse.

Shapes

If you're wanting to fill in a specific shape like a rectangle or circle, use a light colored pencil to create an outline.

Paint to Water Ratio

Get your brush lightly wet. If there is too much water in the brush, dab it on a towel to soak up the excess. Dab your brush in your paint color of choice - just enough to make the watercolor liquid.

Writing

Salt Wash

A thin brush will work best in this instance. However, we cheated here! Instead of painting text with a brush we used a flexible brush tip pen to achieve the same effect.

For a speckled look, shake salt on the painted area before it dries. Allow salt to sit until watercolor is fully dry.

Love Struck

In the Navajo Spirit by True Blue Events

Photography by Jacqueline Pilar

What struck our fancy? Baskets of flowers versus bouquets, bare naked cakes, dreamcatchers, hand-crafted paper goods with stitching and golden harvest hues. If you were at this party we'd bet you'd pinch yourself.

We admire inspiration like this free-spirited (yet glam) affair. It's the perfect blend of indoor and out, natural and chic, neutral and bright. It makes you feel apart of nature without interrupting it.

leslie lewis sigler of lilly & louise For this stationery suite we were inspired by texture. We wanted to echo the organic yet sophisticated textures of the shoot. With the dark wood veneer paper as a starting point, we added more textural layers such as toothy watercolor paper, gold stitching and golden metallic paper. We chose fun yet simple typography that would shine, but not compete with the textures.

make your own beau's boutonniere

flutter DIY AHEAD

Boutonniere DIY by TENLEY ERIN YOUNG Photography by JACQUELINE PILAR

This DIY is all about using found objects. From the feathers to the sticks to the florals, scour your resources and get creative!

Step 1

Step 2

Choose a large array of materials for a variety of options. Don't feel like you have to use everything. Sometimes less is more, and sometimes more is more... you be the judge.

Wrap everything individually in corsage tape to keep it tight and to make sure your couplings stay put. The worst thing is to have your perfectly held boutonniere move around while trying to tape multiple mediums together. Be sure to wrap, add, wrap together and repeat.

What You'll Need: - Corsage Tape - Foraged sticks - Feathers - Succulents - Tiny florals picked from your garden (or use weeds!) - Some fun twine, thread or ribbon - A funky piece of jewelry (A charm or accent/stone will work.)

Step 3

Step 4

Once you've got it all taped, hold it up to yourself and check out how great it looks in the mirror. If it looks killer (and we think it will), choose your decorative outer wrap/ribbon and wrap until you conceal all of the tape.

Pin on with an old pin, brooch or your standard corsage pins. Give to your date to don at your wedding, a gala or at home when ordering in. You'll feel fancy.

IN/OUT we love to see the different wedding trends that come and go. In our humble opinion, here's what we're forecasting for the 2013-2014 season of matrimony.
