W W W. J E S S I C A L E W I S P H O T O . C O M

EDITOR'S LETTER This spring I went to my first destination wedding. By destination, I mean outside of the continental U.S. to an exotic locale. It was quite an adventure to say the least. One of my best friends got hitched down in Yelapa – a small village about 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in the Bay of Banderas; the only way in was by boat. We stayed at a place called Verana (www.verana.com), a private hillside retreat with ten über-chic, openair bungalows – each crafted with its own unique charm. We hiked to nearby waterfalls, lounged poolside, spa’d, toured the local village, swam in the bright blue sea, enjoyed an abundance of culturally-inspired gourmet meals, sipped artisan cocktails till our hearts were content, and danced under the moonlight on what seemed like our own private island. Sounds magical right? It was. But the best part? There were only twenty of us! Twenty of the bride and groom’s nearest and dearest, together at this intimate, romantic jungle getaway. There was no stress, no drama, no pressure to entertain hundreds of guests. It was a long weekend of celebrations that not one of us wanted to end. In this issue we are featuring two coastal weddings of the same caliber. See page 102 for Ellie and Sean’s hacienda hideaway in Riviera Maya, Mexico, and page 92 for Anya and Neil’s international Big Sur bash. They will indeed set your hearts aflutter and inspire intimate destination nuptials. On another note, this issue is one of my absolute favorites because it’s our annual Astrology Issue! Brides-to-be: see what’s in the stars for your wedding day with inspiration on dresses, decor and so much more, based on your zodiac sign. Happy Flipping!

it’s all in the cards For the escort cards, artwork was commissioned from Julie Song Ink and printed on blue belly bands. The bands were wrapped over small gifts for each guest -- which were a very fitting wine opener set since they were in wine country!

When Jasmine first called me she mentioned she wanted to have a “blue” wedding and that she loved the idea of working in jasmine vine as an ode to her name. We took those two things and ran with it... right down to the blue chandeliers that we found! - Lisa Vorce, Event Designer

Aries

March 21 – April 19

Hi Aries. As you march towards your wedded bliss with great energy and enthusiasm, you will, without a doubt, get there flawlessly. Your wedding will be nothing shy of simple, beautiful and bold - just like you! You very much value the opinions and honesty of your friends. We suggest keeping a bestie on speed dial to consult about all of the details of your day. Knowing they’ve helped will make it even more special.

Your Florals: Parrot Tulips | Passion Vine | Citrus

Tip: You will get the ball rolling on tasks

immediately, but others might not be able to keep up with your lightning speed and determination. Be patient and try not to be a bridezilla.

Splurge: Your dearest family and friends are your world. An intimate yet grandeur (i.e. gourmet food and wine) rehearsal dinner is the perfect way to celebrate with your most cherished loves before things gets crazy.

Your Color

Dress: Les Habitudes Ring: W Jewelers | Bracelet: Mickey Lynn

Taurus

April 20 - May 20

Ruled by the planet Venus, you emanate love and beauty. These enchanting characteristics will shine through on your wedding day in everything from your exquisite location (have you considered a budding estate vineyard?) to the decor to the dress. While you thrive on life’s luxuries, Taurus, surround yourself with the basic comforts necessary to keep your mind at ease.

Your Color Dress: Samuelle Couture, Rosa

Your Florals: Amaryllis | Astilbe | Orchids Tip: Yes, we know you love to dish out your dollars on all of the finest things. Prioritize what’s most important so you don’t break the bank.

Splurge: Taurus, you are sure to be the belle of the ball. Let your inner princess shine with something lovely and lavish. We are swooning over this plush tulle gown by Samuelle Couture.

Your Florals: Wildeve English Garden Roses | Peonies | Snowball Viburnum

Gemini

May 21 - June 21

Your energy is contagious, Gemini. Keep it alive with bright blooms and some shimmery elements scattered throughout. Go for the gold by implementing the color into your flatware and jewelry. Speaking of jewelry, you love to make a statement with your accessories. Search high and low for the most perfect pieces to accent your dazzling (nontraditional) dress.

Your Color

Tip: Variety is the spice of your life, Gemini. When it comes to cake, why settle with one when you can have ten? Satisfy your sweet tooth with a dessert table featuring your groom’s and your favorite confections. Splurge: We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again - a wedding planner is key to executing all of your brilliant (yet scattered) ideas. He/she can make them all come together harmoniously.

Dress: BHLDN, Elisa | Bangle + Earrings: Margaret Elizabeth

Cancer

June 22 - July 22

Let the moon be your guide, Cancer. You should drape yourself with creamy tones. Pop pearls throughout your jewelry to emphasize your mood. Allow the rich color from the pearl to be the base of your pallet and add aquamarine for some fun. Use the coolness of the night to keep yourself calm and collected.

Your Color

Tip: Tuberose will add lovely fragrance to the entire

event; have your bridesmaids carry some in each of their bouquets.

Splurge: Tiny pearls can have a grand effect. Try draping those pearls down your back with a “back drop necklace.

Your Florals: Wild Lilac | Anemones | Tuberose

Dress: Samuelle Couture, Delphine | Ring: W Jewelers | Earrings + Bangles: Margaret Elizabeth

Leo

Your Color July 23 - August 22

You are magnanimous, Leo. Draw some attention with gold accents and highlights. Use the sun as your inspiration and add elements of shimmer to your accessories. Pop some color into your day with fiery orange florals on your tables. When your moment comes, know that your spirit will sparkle from within.

Tip: For your own bouquet, infuse the flower of your sign: the fragrant Lily.

Splurge: A gold headpiece will be the perfect topping to your ensemble.

Your Florals: Heirloom Dahlias | Gilded Foliage | Golden Celebration Garden Roses

Dress: Sarah Seven, Cascade | Ring + Bracelet: W Jewelers | Earrings: Margaret Elizabeth

Virgo

August 23 - September 23

Tap into your earthy tones and hues, sweet Virgo. You are grounded in neutrals and beiges. Your glow stems from your inner beauty and will shine through with nude with peach tones. On your day be sure to quiet the busy-ness and take a break to breathe. You are organized and clear and everything that you have crafted will be perfection‌ just like you!

Your Florals:

Muscari | Bay Laurel | CafĂŠau Lait Dahlias

Your Color

Tip: Keep your hair and accessories simple and soft. Sprinkle some baby’s breath into your hair and bouquet. Splurge: Diamonds will add the perfect amount of shine and shimmer to your neutral hues.

Libra

Your Color September 24 - October 22

You dream of every last detail about your wedding day, and every last detail will be flawless, just like you, Libra. Try dressing your classic look with an unexpected accessory. Think about choosing a gown with delicate embellishments such as pearlcapped sleeves. It’s the beautiful little details that will help you shine inside and out. Your wedding will be the perfect balance of the right amount of entertainment and wonderment for everyone to enjoy.

Splurge: Choose a caterer whose food you LOVE! Ask to try a sample menu a few months before, to make sure every last bite is perfection. Only the best for your guests!

Tip: Social harmony is key. Spend some extra time on your guest list and seating chart to ensure attendees are comfortable with their tablemates.

Your florals: Sweet Peas | Yves Piaget Garden Roses | Blushing Bride Protea

Dress: Sarah Seven, Graceful | Earrings: Margaret Elizabeth

Scorpio

Your Color

October 23 - November 21

Have you ever seen a black tulip? It’s really quite beautiful with its velvety purple characteristics. Just like you, Scorpio, it connotes power and strength. Paired with “black” calla lilies for a little mystery, along with some lush greens, and you’ve got a symbolic bouquet that guests will be boasting about for days. Play with the passionate reds of your sign by incorporating them into your table decor.

Tip: Whether you go for a run or arrange a private

yoga session, it’s important to give yourself some “you time” on your wedding day. Post up a “do not disturb” sign and connect with your mind, body and soul.

Splurge: They say you have looks that can kill, Scorpio. We say you have shoes that are killer! Splurge on a pair of stilettos that will make your feet feel sexy.

Your Florals: Queen of the Night Black Tulips | Hot Cocoa Garden Roses | Rex Begonia Foliage

Dress: Les Habitudes | Ring: W Jewelers | Earrings: Margaret Elizabeth

Sagittarius

Your Color

November 22 - December 21

You’re likely to have a wedding inspired by your worldly influences. Even if you haven’t actually been to these places, you’re intrigued by their beauty and simplicity. Like you, Sagittarius, your wedding will be an adventure. Not just for you, but for your guests as well. We can easily see you having an intimate destination wedding over an opulent affair. Imagine a week long celebration with your nearest and dearest overlooking the ocean in a classic Mexican hacienda (see Ellie + Sean’s wedding on page102 for reference). At the end of the day it will feel like a vacation versus a wedding and that’s just your style. Your Florals: Rosemary | Nerines | Ranunculus

Tip: You have a beautiful way with your words. We encourage you to write your own vows

to share with your significant other at your ceremony. We hope your guests have a stash of tissues on-hand! #tearjerker

Splurge: You’re hitched! Now go escape on a first-class honeymoon. Bike ride through the south of France, sail the Croatian seas, cruise through Cape Town...

Dress: Sarah Seven, Mademoiselle | Ring: W Jewelers

Capricorn

Your Color

December 22 - January 19

You are the most traditional of all the signs, Capricorn. We know you won’t walk down the aisle without your something old, new, borrowed and blue. Go back in time by keeping a vintage clutch by your side. For something new, try tying one of Junghwa’s “Mr + Mrs” date-inscribed initial tags around your bouquet. Afterwards, restring it as a necklace and don a piece of your wedding everyday. Need something to borrow? Ask family and friends for a veil. You never know what lovely lace or tulle you’ll stumble upon. Pop in some blue with your accessories.

Tip: We have no doubt that you can single-handedly plan

your whole wedding without a flinch. However, give yourself a break and let others lend a helping hand. A week-of planner might be just what you need.

Splurge: Document memories that will last a lifetime. Spare no expense on your most admired photographer and videographer.

Your Florals: Lily of the Valley | Fair Bianca Garden Roses | Olive Branches

Dress: Les Habitudes | Ring: W Jewelers

Aquarius

January 20 - February 18

We can’t get enough of you, Aquarius. You’re full of humor, quirk and pizazz. You are independent and unconventional and you’ll be trying all of the latest trends on your wedding day. What’s forecasting for 2014? Think gold elements, old world elegance, mixed metals, antique rings and capelets.

Splurge: Go big on the blooms! Your fairytale wedding will not be complete without a magnificent floral wonderland. Check out www.cocorosedesign.com for inspiration.

Your Color

Tip: Represented by fish and water, we say go with the flow.

Look for a location near your natural element (have you seen www.bridalveillakes.com?) to keep your mind at ease.

Your Florals: Pieris Japonica | Icelandic Poppies | Hellebores

Dress: BHLDN, Onyx | Ring: W Jewelers | Earrings: Margaret Elizabeth

Pisces

February 19 - March 20

Everything about your wedding day will be soft and dreamlike. While you typically lean towards neutrals and soft tones, you are a chameleon who isn’t afraid to mix up different styles. Pop in some color with your accessories or even your lip color! If you’re feeling creative, don’t be afraid to get down and dirty with a little DIY.

Tip: A Kitchenaid Mixer just doesn’t excite you. Choose Your Florals: Tillandsia Air Plants | Darling Orchids | Fresh Moss

a registry that’s as unique as you! Have you ever seen www.heathceramics.com? How about www.hudsongracesf.com?

Your Color

Splurge: Hire a band that will rock your night away! You know, the kind with dancers and all‌ The life they bring to the party is worth every penny.

top tips for looking your best in that beautiful dress 1. make a clean sweep of your diet. Get rid of the foods that add pounds and extra curves where you don’t want them. Cut out sugar, caffeine, alcohol, dairy and soy. 2. drink plenty of water. The general rule for water is: Drink 50% of your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 150 pounds, then drink 75 ounces of water per day. Water flushes toxins out of our bodies and helps get rid of puffy eyes and bloated bellies. Integrative Medicine Spa

3. exercise. Burn fat and tone muscles ‒ the order of the day when fitting into the perfect dress.

NEST Integrative Medicine Spa is a new concept in health and medicine. We strive to achieve the perfect balance between healing and nurturing with services that span the spectrum from Western medicine to more preventative, anti-aging treatments. NEST is a place where you may come to have your annual physical, rejuvenate your skin, strengthen your immune system, balance your hormones, optimize weight, detoxify your system, increase energy and prevent chronic disease.

Resistance training is required for toning and sculpting. Start slowly and build up the intensity. Overexercising can lead to increased stress and cortisol imbalance, causing you to gain weight!

4. sculpt your body. There is no reason to go under the knife when you can target stubborn

areas with non-invasive treatments. Zerona cold laser treatments shrink fat cells and tighten your physique. The treatments are relaxing and completely painless. *See special "Flutter Deal" offer mentioned on opposite page.

5. reduce your stress. This is easier said than done for a busy bride. Make yourself a priority.

Spend at least 30 minutes each day doing something relaxing for YOU. Take a walk... meditate... light some candles. Long-term stress can upset natural hormone levels, leaving us with high cortisol. Signs of this imbalance are constant fatigue, feeling wired or uptight (even though you are tired), excess belly fat, and disturbed sleep. If symptoms have persisted for a long time, a visit to a women’s hormone specialist might be in order.

top ten tips for healthy weight loss

1. eat every 3 hours so you don’t have blood sugar crashes and moodiness.

2. plan your meals so that they include healthy choices; avoid fast foods and skipping meals. 3. chew your food. Enjoy meal times and improve digestion by eating slowly and thoughtfully. 4. have a small portion of protein at each meal. Protein is necessary for building and maintaining muscle tone.

5. start with vegetables. When dishing up your meals, cover half the plate with vegetables and use the other half for protein and carbohydrates.

6. include plenty of healthy fats. Coconut oil, avocados, raw nuts, wild salmon, and organic butter are all healthy fats that improve your metabolism. Avoid unhealthy fats like canola oil and soybean oil found in processed chips, crackers, and baked goods.

7. avoid alcohol and soda. These are both empty calories and hard on your liver. 8. eat a big breakfast to rev up your metabolism for the rest of the day. 9. do indulge in a healthy treat and truly enjoy it. Skip the bag of mini candy bars and opt for a dark chocolate torte with fresh berries and organic whipped cream. 10. two heads are always better than one. Get your partner involved in your new

healthy lifestyle!

DIY Done Right! Whitney and Zak’s creativity captured our hearts. We were astounded and inspired by all of the DIY details that made their day a one-of-akind affair to remember (and replicate). Here’s what they crafted.

1. ta pest ry pillows: Yes, these were 75 beauties, handsewn by the bride’s mom using fabrics gathered from a local tapestry warehouse. 2. “t eepee” ta bles: Handcrafted and painted by their

friend Casey Joens, these two artful tables, that flanked the couple during their ceremony, now sit pretty as their nightstands. Talk about purposefully re-purposing forever treasured possessions…

3 . flowers: The day before the wedding, Whitney, her mom, and her closest friends gathered for a flower fete of sorts, where they assembled bouquets, centerpieces, garlands, etc... using a mix of wild flowers and locally sourced blooms.

4. wood serving boa rds: Originally old fence posts, the beautiful platters used to serve cheese and crackers during the ceremony were cut and stained by the couple.

5. j ewelry: Whitney is a jewelry designer by trade, donning her own designs on her wedding day. See her styles online at www.etsy.com/shop/whitneyshelhamer

Timing is Everything

We chose to get married at a close friend’s family almond orchard. We had a twoweek period where the trees bloomed, so that is what we were shooting for in picking a date. The day of the wedding, rain poured and thunder was roaring...but upon starting the first song, the clouds opened up and the sun poured out light!

—the bride

Puppy Love The couple’s boxer pups, roxy blues and violet petals, sat front and center, adorned with handmade eucalyptus wreaths.

On the Fly- During the ceremony the couple released monarch butterflies symbolizing new beginnings, good fortune, and joy.

Ring Bearer Idea!

A strand of leather bearing the rings was used as a necklace in place of the typical ring bearer pillow.

SPANISH ELEGANCE IN SANTA BARBARA briana + david

Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara, California

new yorkers briana and david traveled west for a vibrant and cultural coastal affair like none other.

biltmore bliss

Our hearts were set on a California wedding. As we walked through The Biltmore lobby and out into the warm ocean air, hearing the waves crash as we walked to our room, we knew that this was the place for our big day.

- briana

crown royal

Briana's maids each donned an elaborate head wreath of garden roses and herbs.

custom maids- Briana custom designed coastal-chic gowns for each of her bridesmaids with the help of a NY-based dress maker. We've died and gone to lace heaven!

a couture couple...

Briana was beaming in an exquisite Vera Wang gown and glittering Rene Caovilla sandals. Her dashing groom dressed in a custom suit by Doyle + Mueser, paired with stately velvet slippers.

take a seat

We wanted the ceremony site to feel relaxed and bohemian, yet styled and sophisticated. We created a combination of seating arrangements that included natural wood pews mixed with rattan peacock chairs and stools, all surrounding a gorgeous handcrafted terracotta tile aisle runner. - Alexandra Kolendrianos, Wedding Planner

the juicy details

A symbol from Briana's youth and multiple generations of family, the vibrant citrus fruit was sprinkled throughout the entire wedding: from the boutonnieres and bouquets, to the table decor, and they even had two full-size orange trees built around the altar! These juicy details set our hearts aflutter. How about yours?

behind the inspiration

Inside, the tables were the focus of the room. They were lined with custom Spanish-inspired candelabras, mixed with candles, brass vessels and beautiful florals. Vintage crystal glassware and champagne coupes added a nod to history, while cream colored natural napkins with a deep fringe felt unique and comfortable, adding in that natural, organic vibe that the couple sought. - Alexandra Kolendrianos, Wedding Planner

bouquet breakdown

Each bouquet held thyme, oregano, bay leaf, citrus greens, fresh kumquats, garden roses and dusty miller, tied together luxuriously with neutral-colored, streaming ribbons. - Mindy Rice

neil and i met at work...

I think I first fell for his british accent and then agreed to go watch the world cup with him. We quickly became best friends and fell in love! — the bride

IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA then you know it’s

a sight like none other to sea. The Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean, offering stunning views, lush natural landscapes and photo ops galore. This surreal region would be the backdrop for both families to unite; the groom’s family – hailing from England– and the bride’s, Alaska, would come together for an unforgettable coastal courtship.

a true family affair: Married by one of Anya’s sisters with respective siblings and close friends by their side, it was a true family affair.

the perks of an intimate affair: 1. You are surrounded by your most cherished family and friends. 2. You can save money and you can splurge! Imagine that... 3. Venue options are endless. 4. You actually get to spend quality time with all of your guests. 5. Guests can help with the details, making it all that more memorable.

bouquet breakdown

This bouquet included elements indigenous to the Big Sur area: rosemary, wheat, rose, dusty miller and celosia.

let’s band together and swoon over these beauties!

Anya’s engagement ring hails from Whibleys, a local jeweler in Guildford, England. The bands are from Tiffany & Co.

Ellie + Sean Hacienda Corazon Riviera Maya, Mexico

Photography by Emily Blake

hailing from portland, oregon, ellie and sean escaped south of the border with family and friends for a vibrant destination wedding.

we envisioned a romantic, elegant, old world wedding, inspired by nature, incorporating the vibrant colors and flavors of mexico.

The haciendas’ gorgeous architecture and decor definitely inspired us. The tree-lined entrance made for a stunning natural aisle. The caribbean sea was elegantly framed by the arched portals. We fell in love with the place and couldn’t wait to bring our friends and family there. —the bride

a week of celebrations Ellie and Sean sought out a private beachfront villa where they could gather with family and friends for several days before and after the actual wedding. It was a week of pure sun-filled, fun-filled marital bliss -Mexican-style of course complete with margaritas, toes in the sand and memories that would last a lifetime.

destination wedding bits + tips Not finding all the right vendors? Or the perfect ones? It can be daunting trying to nail down all of your wedding day details from afar. Ellie and Sean planned ahead by using their favorite hometown vendors to create place cards, table numbers and favors. They even brought their own papel picado garland (purchased on Etsy) to hang at their rehearsal dinner. Upon arrival in Mexico, they handed off these personalized details to their on-site planner who took it from there.

love seating The bride’s friend sculpted heart shapes out of clay, added a slit for the name card, fired them, and then painted them gold and pink. She brought them to Mexico with her for the special day. What a lovely keepsake!

mr. & mrs. Ellie and Sean embraced and showcased their new titles with these gorgeously embroidered chair markers inspired by vintage hope chest linens. Find them online at www.BHLDN.com.

lucy + hayden Following their very non-traditional “disco brunch” at the moody Mister Parker’s (Palm Springs, CA), Lucy and Hayden were showered with rice just before jumping into their vintage getaway car. The ‘54 Oldsmobile Super 88 was detailed with a postmodern spin, including a custom Parker-esque “Just Married” sign and trailing soup cans, wrapped in images of their dog, Melvyn. The couple were engaged at Palm Springs’ legendary Melvyn’s Restaurant, which not only served as their dog’s namesake, but inspired them to choose the Parker Palm Springs for their destination wedding.
