Why Static Stretching Before Running Can Lead to Muscle Strains

Runners are often told to stretch before a run, but static stretching holding a stretch for an extended period can actually increase the risk of muscle and tendon strains. The key reason lies in the muscle spindle, a sensory receptor in muscles that detects changes in length and prevents overstretching.

The Role of the Muscle Spindle

Muscle spindles act like built-in stretch sensors, triggering a reflex contraction when a muscle is stretched too quickly or too far. This protective mechanism, known as the stretch reflex, prevents excessive elongation and potential injury. However, when a runner performs static stretching before running, they may temporarily desensitize the muscle spindle’s protective response. This reduces the muscle’s ability to contract efficiently, increasing the risk of overstretching.

Why Static Stretching Can Lead to Strains

When you stretch and hold a position for too long, the muscle spindle adapts, allowing the muscle to elongate beyond its natural pre-activation range. If you then transition into running a high-impact, dynamic movement the overstretched muscles and tendons lack the necessary stiffness and responsiveness, making them more prone to strains and microtears.

A Better Approach: Dynamic Warm-Ups

Instead of static stretching, runners should focus on dynamic warm-ups like leg swings, high knees, and lunges. These movements gradually increase muscle length while keeping the spindle active, preparing the body for the demands of running. By respecting the muscle spindle’s role, runners can avoid unnecessary strains and enhance performance, efficiency, and injury prevention. Save static stretching for post -run recovery, when muscles are warm and more pliable.

for non-invasive, highly effective healing solutions that are making regenerative medicine safer, more accessible, and more efficient than ever before.

In The Future of Regenerative Medicine: Unlocking the Potential of Topical Stem Cell Therapy, I explore how these topical treatments are helping individuals—from athletes to those recovering from injury—recover faster, heal more effectively, and enhance their overall physical well-being.

This book is not only for medical professionals and researchers but for anyone interested in the future of health and wellness. Whether you're an athlete, a weekend warrior, or simply someone who wants to maintain optimal physical health, this book provides the insights and knowledge you need to understand how these cutting-edge therapies can work for you.

A Game Changer for Athletes and Active Individuals

As an athlete, I know firsthand the challenges of dealing with injuries and the frustration of slow recovery. From muscle strains to joint pain, injuries are an inevitable part of pushing our bodies to their limits. Traditional recovery methods can be time-consuming and often come with their own set of risks and side effects. However, topical stem cell applications have emerged as a groundbreaking solution, offering faster recovery times and effective healing without the need for injections or surgery.

This book introduces the innovative therapies behind these topical treatments, which promote healing, reduce inflammation, and accelerate recovery. Whether you're an endurance athlete, a runner, or someone who enjoys active hobbies, you’ll discover how these advanced therapies can be the key to maintaining peak performance and getting back on track faster after injuries. With real-world examples, I walk you through the many benefits and the science behind this exciting field of regenerative medicine.

Understanding Topical Stem Cell Applications

Topical stem cell applications are a game-changing breakthrou gh in regenerative medicine. Unlike traditional stem cell treatments that require injections directly into the affected area, topical treatments involve compounds that can be absorbed through the skin, delivering regene rative benefits directly to the damaged tissues. This method allows for faster recovery, reduced discomfort, and a more accessible option for those who want healing without undergoing complex procedures.

In this book, I delve into the science behind these treatments, breaking down how stem cells work at a cellular level to repair and regenerate tissues. Through advanced delivery systems, these topical applications trigger the body’s natural self-healing processes. This makes them not only a safer option but an ideal solution for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone looking to improve their physical health without invasive methods.

How This Book Can Help You

The Future of Regenerative Medicine: Unlocking the Potential of Topical Stem Cell Therapy isn’t just a technical guide— it's an accessible and engaging exploration of the possibilities within this field. It’s meant to be a resource for anyone

looking to understand the power of regenerative medicine and how it can help them heal, recover, and improve their physical performance. Inside, you'll learn:

 The evolution of stem cell therapy and why the future is shifting toward topical applications.

 The science behind how these treatments regenerate and repair muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and cartilage.

 How topical stem cell therapy is transforming recovery for athletes seeking faster, more effective results.

 A real-life case study of Jeff, whose personal journey with regenerative medicine offers a compelling look into its practical benefits.

 Practical advice on how to integrate these advancements into your own recovery and wellness routine, regardless of your fitness level or background.

The Role of Regenerative Medicine in Sports and Performance

Athletes and active individuals know that pushing our bodies to perform at the highest levels often leads to injuries that can keep us out of action for extended periods. Whether it's muscle fatigue, tendonitis, or joint pain, the ability to recover quickly is crucial. Many professional and amateur athletes are already turning to regenerative medicine to gain a competitive edge, and topical stem cell applications are playing a key role in this revolution.

By targeting inflammation, improving circulation, and stimulating tissue repair, these therapies provide a rapid recovery solution that reduces downtime and accelerates healing. This book explains how topical stem cell treatments can be integrated into an athlete’s recovery rout ine, allowing them to return to training faster, reduce the risk of reinjury, and maintain peak performance levels.

A New Standard in Injury Recovery

When it comes to soft tissue injuries, traditional treatments often include painkillers, physical therapy, or surgery. While these methods can be effective, they come with a host of risks and side effects—things like long recovery times, invasive procedures, and potential for additional injury. The rise of topi cal stem cell therapies presents a safer, more efficient, and non-invasive alternative.

By using scientifically formulated stem cell-based products, athletes can enhance their body’s natural healing abilities, reducing pain, improving flexibility, and returning to training faster. This book explores how these treatments work, their benefits, and how they can be seamlessly integrated into an athlete’s recovery plan.

Bridging the Gap Between Science and Real-World Application

One of the challenges of regenerative medicine is making these advanced therapies both accessible and understandable to the general public. The Future of Regenerative Medicine breaks down complex scientific concepts into simple, digestible insights. I combine research with real-world applications, offering compelling narratives and case studies to ensure that readers from all walks of life can understand the transformati ve potential of these treatments. It’s designed to be an essential read for anyone interested in the future of healthca re, from athletes to healthcare professionals, and anyone who is passionate about improving their physical well-being.

Life goes on:

The St. Anthony’s Triathlon just celebrated its latest successful weekend event in St. Petersburg. It is one of the premier Olympic distance triathlons in the Country, now into her 40’s. The entire weekend draws more than 4,000 athletes to the Gulf Coast of florida. I had the privilege of working on and announcing the weekend from the late 80’s until the Pandemic. Under Patrick McGee’s tutelage, the weekend continues to show good health and fun co-exist. To everyone who continues to make St. A’s a renowned national event, congrats!

A couple of take always from spectating this year:

1. Participants obviously had a lot of fun to go with the physical challenges: smiles everywhere on the course;

2. 90% of participants should NOT cross the starting line with shoes already attached to pedal, then, with obviously little or no practice time, attempt the running mount. So many wasted so much time just to try to look like a pro. Probably the most dangerous (and entertaining) part of the course;

3. Need to upgrade sound system around transition and finish line. And what happened to spotters on the race course to keep fans entertained during the pro race?

No event can be perfect, but St. A’s comes very close. Keep it up, Patrick! And kudos for the St. Anthony’s leadership to continue to see the positive value of this event to our community.

My perspective and opinion on embracing the use of Wetsuit

As a coach and avid swimmer, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of wetsuits. These versatile pieces of gear not only enhance performance but also cater to individual needs, especially for athletes with varying abilities.

I would like share my opinion on the benefits of wearing a wetsuit, when to consider shedding it due to heat, and the regulations governing their use in competitive events. I want to also delve into the various neoprene options available and emphasize the importance of respecting individual choices in swim gear.

First what I think on the Benefits of Wearing a Wetsuit

Wetsuits are designed to provide thermal insulation, buoyancy, and protection. Made primarily from neoprene, they trap a thin layer of water between the suit and your skin, which warms up from your body heat, creating a comfortable microclimate. Here are some significant benefits:

1. Buoyancy: Wetsuits offer enhanced buoyancy, helpi ng swimmers maintain an optimal body position. This is especially beneficial for those refining their swim stroke or for athletes with disabilities that I used to help, such as those with spina bifida, who may find neoprene shorts helpful for stability and buoyancy.

2. Thermal Protection: In colder water, a wetsuit keeps your body warm, allowing for longer, more comfortable swims. This thermal protection can be crucial for performance and enjoyment. Some friends are susceptible to cold temperatures.

3. Skin Protection: Wetsuits shield your skin from abrasions, jellyfish stings, and sun exposure, making them an essential piece of gear for open water swims.

When to Stop Wearing a Wetsuit Due to Heat

While wetsuits are advantageous, they can become uncomfortable in warmer conditions. The USAT (USA Triathlon), USMS United States Masters Swim), and IRONMAN regulations stipulate temperature thresholds for wetsuit legality in races. Generally, it’s advisable to consider removing your wetsuit when water temperatures exceed 78°F (25.5°C) for non-

Recognizing & Managing Shin Splints

Christopher Arrigo, PT, DPT, ATC

You have been increasing your weekly mileage or the intensity of your runs during your training cycle for your next (or first) marathon, half marathon, or Triathlon and have started to experience pain in the front of your lower leg along your shin. At first you hoped that it would go away on its own with time. You may have even taken a few days off before starting your training back. Unfortunately, that nagging pain in the front of your lower legs is sticking around and possibly even worsening, causing you to start worrying that all of the time and effort you have put into your training will be for nothing. If this sounds familiar, then you are likely dealing with

Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome or anterior tibial stress syndrome, is one of the most common over-use running injuries. It is estimated that up to 20% of runners will develop shin splint pain at some point in their running journey. This overuse injury involves generalized pain on the inside or outside border of the shin that is greater than 5cm in length and usually starts with running or walking. Initially it tends to decrease or goes away throughout the run but if unchecked it can progress to constant pain. Shin splints are thought to be caused by excessive overload due to the impact of running in combination with pulling forces where the tibialis posterior or tibialis anterior muscles attach to the lower leg. This then causes inflammation around the shin bone resulting in pain.

What are common causes of shin splints?

 Muscle imbalances with flexibility and/or strength in your hips, thighs, and lower legs

 Training errors such as increasing weekly mileage or intensity too quickly

 Poor running mechanics

 Improper or worn-out shoes

How can I manage shin splints in the short term?

 Check in with a sports medicine physician and/or Advanced Rehabilitation for a detailed plan to address the muscle imbalances and build your strength & flexibility

 Reduce your weekly running mileage and supplement with low impact cross training

 Stretching or foam rolling tight muscles regularly

 Providing ice/elevation/compression to the painful areas of your legs after running

What can I do to help prevent shin splints?

 Maintain a strong and stable core, hips, and ankles with strengthening exercises at least two days per week

 Train smart and do not increase mileage or intensity too quickly

 Check your cadence and work to increase your step rate closer to 180 steps/minute

 Stretching and/or foam rolling tight muscles regularly

Finally, pain in the shin region can have many other causes including a muscle strain, stress reaction, stress fracture, compartment syndrome, or even nerve entrapment. It is important to have a medical professional rule out more serious issues that may be going on if you have pinpoint pain that does not go away as you warm up. Some signs that may indicate something other than shin splints include:

 Limping while walking or running

 Constant pain at rest

 Numbness or tingling

 Small spot (less than 5cm in length) directly on the shin bone that are extremely painful to the touch

Need some guidance?

 While these management and prevention techniques can help decrease pain and get you through your next race, a visit with a physician and physical therapist can often help with this process and get to the root of the problem with an individualized approach to help prevent future issues or injuries.

 Physical therapists can assess your running mechanics, determine muscle imbalances including weak or tight muscles, make footwear recommendations, and get you started on a personalized exercise program to treat your specific impairments for you to be pain free allowing you to run your best.

Contact Advanced Rehabilitation at (813) 250-1208 or www.advancedrehab.us if you have any questions about Shin Splints or other injuries.

PowerPlate:

The secret of Nitric Oxide (NO)

Nitric Oxide (NO) is a strong molecule that is very important for several physiological processes, such as widening blood vessels or vasodilation. Vasodilation, or thickening of blood vessels, makes blood flow better, which brings oxygen and nutrients to muscles. This better circulation is especially helpful for runners or athletes because it can help them do better, avoid injuries, and heal faster.

Nitric oxide (NO) has historically been recognized as the endothelium-derived calming factor. It functions as a vasodilator, regulating vascular tone, blood pressure, and hemodynamics. Moreover, it is potent antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic properties. Vascular and muscle NO signals connect the heart's and muscles' energy needs with available energy. They are important for keeping the body's balance of carbs and fats.

One way to boost NO generation is with the help of PowerPlate, a platform that vibrates the entire body. The quick vibrations produce a shearing effect inside blood vessels when utilized for about 10 minutes at certain frequencies (25-30 Hz). Power plate can produce up to 50 vibrations through the body in one second to stimulate the muscles and the joints. The enhanced vasodilation in the extremities/joints/appendages is a result of this shearing stimulating the release of NO.

Advantages to Runners

Enhanced performance and Speed:

Muscles receive more oxygen and nutrients through increased blood low, leading to improved running performance.

Less Impact on Joints:

PowerPlate is a great alternative to conventional running for warming up muscles and increasing lexibility without the impact. Runners experience less DOMS: (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) and faster recovery times thanks to increased blood low, which carries nutrients for muscle repair and helps eliminate metabolic waste.

The Best Approach:

The best time to usePowerPlate is 10mins before a run and 10mins after a run, for maximum effectiveness. Optimal NO generation and enhanced blood low during and after exercise can be achieved at this time and can have a positive effect on runner’s performance.
