THIS YEAR I RESOLVE TO…

M

ichelle Groves, Independent Financial Adviser at Scrutton Bland looks at some of the resolutions you can keep to

this year. e top three New Year’s Resolutions last year were: 1) To lose weight 2) Get organised 3) Spend less/save more As an Independent Financial Adviser I am not the best person to tell you how to achieve number one, having failed to lose a single pound in 2016. So this year I will revisit number one with the help of a personal trainer. Number three would seem to be the easiest to put into action, but even with strict budgeting, there are so many outgoings: mortgage, childcare, credit cards. What happened to the plan to retire early, live mortgage free and take more holidays? Now is a good time to take stock and think about how you are going to fund the things that you want to do in your life. If you have unsecured debts, take advantage of the wealth of free online resources to help you manage and reduce your debts as efficiently as possible. We normally recommend that you hold six months of net income as an emergency fund and to cover any unforeseen expenditure. Having set aside money for the short term, you should think about the longer, more aspirational goals that you wish to save for, such as your retirement, children’s university education or a future nest egg. Don’t put these off if they are important to you. e key to long term change is making small sustainable changes that you can stick to, thus building good habits for the future. Tax efficient wrappers such as Pensions and ISAs are a good start. ere are a wealth of ISAs available, from the conventional cash and stocks and shares ISAs, to ISAs that invest in the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), Help to Buy ISAs, Lifetime ISAs and the new Innovative Finance ISA. If you already have various ISAs or personal pensions, you might think about consolidating them by transferring them to a platform. A platform is an arrangement that allows you to hold all of your different investments in one place with access to thousands of investment options including shares, passive and active funds, and investment

1 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

trusts, all with consolidated online access and less paperwork (and doing this might also tick off resolution number two!). ere may be advantages to consolidating your pensions but you should check whether there are reasons not to transfer, such as exit penalties or valuable Guaranteed Annuity Rates. If you’re not sure what pensions you hold, the Pension Tracing Service can help with finding lost pensions, see www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk. An Independent Financial Adviser will undertake a thorough assessment of your short, medium and long term life goals taking into account any debts or financial issues that might crop up along the way. ey will assess your risk profile and investment aims to design a personalised plan for you, then meet with you regularly to help you stay on track. n

WINTRY WOODLAND N

ow, in the depths of winter, the trees are no longer displaying their autumn finery and the lush greens of spring turning to the hazy yellows of late summer seem to be from a time now long forgotten. However, the perhaps barren wintry setting can reveal a deeper beauty upon closer inspection, especially if a seemingly magical sprinkling of frost or a covering of fresh, pure white snow is added for good measure. So don’t let the lowering temperatures or failing light put you off of some wonderful, wintry adventures. We have five suggestions of different things to get out and enjoy in Epping Forest: Experience the Forest at dusk – as the sun goes down and day gives way to night, why not experience the atmosphere of the woods as darkness creeps through the trees. Listen out for the chiming of the blackbird as it goes to roost and hear the hoot of the first night owl. Go star gazing – this is the very best time of the year to watch the stars. Choose a clear night and look out for Orion stalking across the heavens. Without the light pollution experienced in more urban settings, the Forest vantage points will allow you to get a much better view of the night sky. Stand in the former path of a glacier – As the Anglian Ice Sheet of 450,000 years ago retreated, a substantial mass of material, known as glacial moraine, was dumped in its wake.

1 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

One such glacial moraine appears as patches of gravel nearly a kilometre long south of Great Monk Wood. is glacial gravel can be seen at a number of places in the Forest and is especially evident at the Lost Pond. Tell the age of a tree – a very rough estimate of a tree’s age can be made by measuring its girth at about 1.5 metres above the ground. Use one of the following formulas: If the tree is surrounded by other trees, every 12mm of girth equals a year’s growth. If the tree is standing alone, every 25mm of girth equals a year’s growth. Build a snowman – if there is snow fall let your imagination go wild and make either a traditional snowman or a something a bit different! en photograph your frozen creation and share it on Twitter @CoLEppingForest. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with simply blowing off the festive cobwebs with a wintry, woodland wander. If you need a little more inspiration or ideas for places to visit in Epping Forest then start your exploration at Epping Forest’s Visitor Centre, e View (Rangers Road, E4 7QH). CHANGING CHILDREN’S LIVES -THE STORY CONTINUES

A

s a new year dawns there are new dreams in the Parmar household following the fantastic fundraising vision of Ash Parmar and his passion and determination to change children’s lives. Christine Baker, Christen Media, looks back with Ash on turning his dream into reality. Ash first launched his charity ambition in LIFE series magazines in November 2015. His vision was to raise £20,000 to help children in the UK and in India. e chosen charities are Haven House Children’s Hospice in Woodford Green and Food for Life Vrindavan (FFLV), in India. Ash is a Trustee of FFLV and has visited to see their work providing education, food distribution, medical services, social development, clothing and a better environment for the very poorest. Ash’s plan was to raise £20,000 with a donation of £10,000 for each charity to enable them to extend and build on the great work being done for children. Once the vision was launched the hard work began. Ash said “I was personally overwhelmed with the support and guidance I received. I had no idea how hard it would be or whether we would achieve it. “I want to particularly thank my father Bhikhu, who is also my best friend. We went on this personal and challenging journey together and without him it would not have been possible. Helping those worse off is humbling and I am honoured that we exceeding the target and raised awareness of both these excellent charities.” Efforts began in earnest to raise funds, sell tickets and secure auction items. e climax was a Ball held in June last year which united both charities and 300 people who attended the event. 1 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

Reality TV star Mark Wright auctioned his famous ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ shoes and EastEnders Nitin Granattra (Masood) was on hand to support the fun and inspirational event. It raised a fantastic £34,000 – a stunning testament to the work, commitment and enthusiasm that went into making Ash’s dream a triumph. After expenses both charities received £14,633 which has been wisely spent. Charlotte Terry, Head of Community Engagement at Haven House said “We are honoured that Ash chose our work supporting local children with life limiting disabilities and their families.” Some of the funding has been spent on ‘Pay for a Day of Care’. is could be the day a child comes in to the beautiful hospice building for the very first time and discovers all the great resources to play with and enjoy themselves. It might be the day a child bakes cupcakes. Or, it may be a family's last day together, supported by the nursing team. Rupa Ragunath, founder of FFLV, echoes the sentiment. “Ash is a wonderful Trustee and thanks to him we have more people sponsoring a child and able to provide an even better future for our children.” For Ash it’s not just a dream come true. He says “It’s my honour to help improve the lives of these children. I would like to wish all LIFE readers a very happy new year.” n

FRESHLY-PREPARED LUNCHES COME TO BRAESIDE SCHOOL

I

n September 2015 Braeside in Buckhurst Hill joined the Oak-Tree Group of Schools and now sits alongside its new sister schools Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton. Over the last year the two sites - Braeside Juniors in Palmerston Road and Braeside Seniors on the High Road have had extensive building work carried out to enhance their facilities. e most recent development is the creation of a purpose-built commercial kitchen suite and serveries for the provision of freshly cooked lunches for the pupils to replace the previous parent-provided daily packed lunches. At the Juniors in Palmerston Road a new access route has been installed to the rear and the school hall has been extended to accommodate a large fully-equipped servery for the lunches. e large bespoke kitchen suite has recently been completed at the Seniors, and freshly-cooked lunches are now provided for all children from Lower Kindergarten to Year 11. Group Principal Matthew Hagger is very pleased with the development; “e kitchen extension and installation at the Seniors progressed very well over Christmas. New ceilings, wall linings and floorings were fitted, the team of decorators moved in and the commercial kitchen equipment was installed during the first week in January 2017. e school hall was extended at the Juniors over the summer break to include a new servery, and the new catering equipment was

2 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

installed by our installation team”. Chartwells, one of the largest external catering contractors to independent schools in the UK, has been awarded the catering contract. Mr Hagger has been using Chartwells at the other Oak-Tree Schools for many years and knows well the quality of the service provided. An experienced Chef and his new catering team have been recruited and the weekly menus have been developed and published to parents. e Chefs at the Oak-Tree Schools meet together periodically to develop menus and establish new dishes for the children, and are used to organising ‘theme days’ during the year such as for Chinese New Year. Mr Hagger is used to adapting the provision of food to different aged children; “Our youngest children in Kindergarten and Reception will have their food plated and served for them without needing to make too many choices from the counters. Children from Year 1 to Year 11 will be able to make their way along the servery with their trays and plates and choose from the daily menus on offer. e catering and front of house staff will guide our younger children with their choices and will be encouraging them to try a range of different foods.”n

WHY GREAT COPY CONVERTS INTEREST INTO A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

T

he calibre of your content whether online or printed, should engage your target audience and then convert interest into a genuine, business enquiry.

MARKETING TIP: Top copywriters and digital marketers strongly recommend incorporating strategic and effective content marketing into all promotional campaigns. is includes websites, PR material, brochures, leaflets and to consider your branding message and image. ere are hundreds of pages on Google reiterating the importance of content. WHERE DO YOU START? • Understand your target audience • Research your competitors and ideally, prepare a chart of your company by comparison • Be sure and clear about your USP, branding and mission statement • Consider your overall plan and appropriate budget • Brainstorm ideas and develop a truly unique approach to engage your audience • Compile a report with a strategic plan and objective • Discuss with your team or business partners, so everybody can work collectively • With respect to the content, write in a professional format that is appropriate to the medium. For example how you would write a leaflet is very different to a website • Be realistic with the time a potential reader would invest to look at your material. For a website, readers will normally only allocate three seconds before deciding to continue reading or to click out • Consider all your marketing material and how it will ensure a drive of traffic to your website or preferably a call to your office or mobile, to discuss business • Social media. It’s powerful and gives you unlimited opportunities to promote yourself and company. 2 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

CALIBRE OF CONTENT Content should be compelling and informative. In addition, your website will receive more hits if the content is constantly updated and interesting. In order to really boost traffic to your website, it is essential to have marketing material such as brochures and leaflets and to regularly post blogs on both your website and via social media. It is important to be seen as a trusted source of information who is prepared to share their knowledge. …And the ROI… Keep track of your content marketing campaigns and record the ROI. (Return on Investment). All marketing material should have a purpose and its results tracked. If it’s good it will be shared, found on the internet and circulated. Monitoring success will help you to plan future campaigns. e internet facilitates multiple opportunities however it is worth considering what is appropriate, rather than wasting precious time and money on anything and everything. Be selective in order to maximise the value of your time and budget. Finally content has to be well-written. How and what you write is indicative of the calibre of your product or service so take ample time to draft, thoroughly edit (allow at least two/three versions) before the final proof. Also consider the appropriate word count necessary to complement the graphics and design. e aesthetics are your company’s first, visual impression and opportunity for an impact. With all this time and effort, you want it to be perfect. n

LOOKING BACK BEFORE LOOKING FORWARD WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

L

ast year certainly had some unexpected surprises such as the UK voting for BREXIT and the US voting for Trump. Plus all those celebrity deaths which culminated in the one day apart, double whammy of mother and daughter, Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. When you read of people dying in such sad and pitiful circumstances such as George Michael or Debbie Reynolds David Bowie (Songwriter/singer) Alan Rickman (Actor) Glenn Frey (Eagles guitarist) Frank Finlay (Actor) Terry Wogan (Broadcaster) Maurice White (Earth, Wind and Fire) Harper Lee (Author of To Kill a Mockingbird) Frank Kelly (Father Jack in Father Ted) George Kennedy (Actor) Tony Warren (Creator of Coronation Street) Sir George Martin (Beatles record producer) Paul Daniels (Magician) Cliff Michelmore (Broadcaster) Ronnie Corbett (Comedian) Denise Robertson (Presenter) Howard Marks (Author)

of a seemingly broken heart, it does make you consider your own mortality. Albeit very few of us can compare our lifestyles to the heady heights of Hollywood where in some cases, excess has no boundaries. But even so, most of the following are household names that have touched our lives in one way or another with their contribution to music, literature, sport or science:

Barry Howard (Actor) Victoria Wood (Writer and Comedian) Prince (Songwriter and singer) Carla Lane (Writer) Muhammad Ali (Boxer) Anton Yelchin (Actor) Caroline Aherne (Actress) Kenny Baker (Actor) Gene Wilder (Actor) Arnold Palmer (Golfer) Alexis Arquette (Singer/Actor) Jean Alexander (Actress – Hilda Ogden) Dave Cash (DJ) Pete Burns (Pop star) Jimmy Perry (Scriptwriter) Leonard Cohen (Singer) Sir Jimmy Young (Broadcaster) Robert Vaughan (Actor) Florence Henderson (Actress)

All of the above have made such a powerful and positive contribution. For those of us of a certain age who have watched Coronation Street for decades, danced at a disco to a Status Quo song whilst strumming an air guitar, or smooched to a George Michael or Carla Lane song with their first love… who could forget those cherished moments and memories? Can they be replaced? Absolutely not. Will they be missed? Absolutely. n

Ron Glass (Actor) Coral Atkins (Actress) Andrew Sachs (Actor) Peter Vaughan (Actor) Greg Lake (of Emerson Lake and Palmer) AA Gill (Writer) Vera Rubin (Astronomer who discovered dark matter) Zsa Zsa Gabor (Actress and Socialite) Dr. Piers Sellers (British astronaut) Rick Parfitt (Status Quo rocker) Liz Smith (Actress) George Michael (Songwriter/singer) Richard Adams (Author of Watership Down) Carrie Fisher (Actress) Debbie Reynolds (Actress)

Arpit said “is is a great group and I thoroughly enjoy the meetings. Fiona said “I’ve got to know all the members well and trust them to bring me good business clients. It’s fun and we aim to network and build business in a friendly and supportive environment.” Membership consists of just one company per profession but we are always looking to grow the group. PR guru Christine Baker from Christen Media says “We all know how draining networking can be and some groups have demanding rules and regs. Not so EFBG! It’s the only one I want to be at each week and it has bought me good business clients.” e Chairman’s Cup was the brainchild of Darshan Sunger, from ree Oaks Estates Lettings Management, our Chair for 2016. T

his year’s grand title winning image, Entwined wined lives (above), was taken by field biologist and photojournalist ist T Tim im Laman. The young male orangutan’s face shot from above gives a new perspective on the storryy of Bor Bornean organuatans, and is a reminder of both the beauty and fragility of the natural world. The backdrop is the rich rainforest of the Gunung Palung l Park, in West West Kalimantan, one of o the few protected tan strongholds in Indonesian Borneo. Bor The orangutan eturned to feast on the crop off figs. He has a mental of the likely fruiting trees in hiis huge range, and he already feasted here.

Tim knew w he would retur return and, more important, that there was no way to reach h the top – no route through the canopy – other than up the tree. But hee had to do three days of climbing up and down, by rope, to place in position sition several GoPro cameras that he could trigger remotely to give him a chance of not only a wide-angle view of the forest below but also a view iew of the orangutan’s face from above. This shot was the one he had long visualised, looking down on the orangutan within its forest home. e. ounded in the Spring of 2014, the Silent Pool Distillery was set-up p with the vision of creating hand-ccrafted, premium spirits. Its location on th he banks of the spring-fed Silent Pool, on the Dukee of Northumberland’s Alb Albury E Estate, iin the h b beautiful if l SSurrrey Hills Hill – an area that h was once flush flush with juniper ber berries – pays a fitting tribute to the main ingredient that creates the t fla flavour of all gins: the delicately fla flavoured juniper berrry. Each component in Silent Pool Gin G is carefully selected and, where possible, locally sourced d. A hose is passed through the open door of the distilllery and draws water from the Silent Pool, a body of watter that gives the spirit its name, beginning the unique fourr-stage production process. The gin is entirely crafted within the four walls of the distillery with precision and loving care even the bottling takes place here. h The flagship spirit, Silent Pool Gin, was launched on the UK market in April 2015 to critical acclaim m, winning several international Gold tasting awaards (Gin Masters, IWSC, WSA, CWSA). The distillers d haavve since turned their expert eyes to ad dditional variants like Naavy-strength and seasonal gin g cordials - strawberry and blackberry - as well as ryye vodka and Eau de Vies, so you can stock yourr entire drinks cabinet. They even do elegant copaa glasses too! If you like the sound of o all that, make your way online to their website (www w.. Th i seasonall gin Their i cordials, di l which hi h are made d with i h either ih strawberries or blackberries that haavve been freshly picked in nearby fields, taste great on their own, but we think they’re even better with a bit of fizz. And haavve you ever wished to recreate the expert flourish flourish of a professional mixologist when making cocktails at home? Well Well now no you can with Silent Pool Mist Liquid Garnishes. These ingenious little bottles haave been devised to raise your homemade cocktail game to a new level. Each spray, y, distilled to 80% ABV and with the ability to create 120 drinks, covers the surface of your cocktail with a mist that that’s delicate, fla flaavourful and aromatic, adding an extra dimension to all of your faavourite tipples. Or why not indulge in Silent Pool Distillers’ latest offering - Silent Pool Gin-Infused Smoked Salmon? Intricately Realised Gin from the Surrey Hills and salmon from the cold waters of the North Atlantic haavve been combined to create a very special culinary experience. Delicately smoke fla flaavoured salmon, cured in one of England’s last traditional smokehouses, is infused with Silent Pool Gin that has been hand-crafted to accentuate kaffir lime and juniper berries, to make what is probably the best smoked salmon you will ever taste. And the best bit of news is that you don’t haave to go far to find the distinct teal and copper bottle. Silent Pool Gin is now distributed nationwide: Waitrose Waitrose, Majestic, Wine Rack, Odd Bins, M&S, plus in more than 50 independents as well as across Europe and soon in the US. www.silentpooldistillers.com

edik8 launched r-Retinoate® a true breakthrough in anti-ageing skincare. e innovative active ingredient inside has been created via an exclusive collaboration with a Korean 'superlab' which combines their incredible active ingredient and made it into an exquisitely high-performing finished product. THE MUST-HAVE INGREDIENTS e secret is out it takes more than one active to visibly reduce signs of skin ageing. Collagen stimulation, quenching free radicals and skin hydration are the main elements needed to fight skin ageing. at’s why the following 5 key actives are contained in r-Retinoate: • e worldwide exclusive and patented encapsulated active, retinyl retinoate, is proven to be more effective yet less irritating than retinol to stimulate collagen synthesis and skin cell turnover. • Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant to quench free radicals. Plus there is also another antioxidant that quenches UV-induced free radicals, vitamin C. In combination vitamin E & vitamin C synergistically boost the overall antioxidant effect. •To draw moisture to the skin and support skin structure keeping it hydrated and supple, hyaluronic acid has been added. •Last but not least glycerin, an effective humectant, locks in moisture to support the skin’s natural barrier function.

CLINICALLY PROVEN RESULTS Fine lines and wrinkles are visibly softened, pigmentation visually reduced and the appearance of overall skin surface uniformity is restored. Skin looks clearer, brighter, revitalised; ultimately more youthful. With continued use, improvements become even more remarkable over time. Charlotte says “Firstly, I was very skeptical as I've used retinol before and I found it irritating on my sensitive skin, but everything was fine! I have really noticed the overall tone of my skin changing from a dull and a bit patchy to skin that's much brighter and looks even all over. Wrinkles seem less deep and overall I'm very happy. I want to keep going to see what happens next!” n

WHAT IS HYPOXI®?

H

YPOXI® is completely non invasive, targeted body reshaping, developed by sport scientist Dr Norbert Egger in Salzburg. Dr Egger, noticed that stubborn fat deposits in poorly circulated areas were resistant to diet and exercise. e solution was to activate the burning of fatty acids by increasing blood circulation in problematic areas. HYPOXI® technology stimulates the circulation into the problem areas and improve the metabolism. HYPOXI® equipment will target specific areas: stomach, hips, buttocks, and thighs. HOW HYPOXI® WORKS AND THE RESULTS THAT ARE TYPICALLY ACHIEVED. HYPOXI® works by getting you to gently exercise to optimise blood flow to allow the unique changes in pressure at optimum intervals to improve the circulation in fatty areas enabling targeted fat burn. Typically with 6 weeks of HYPOXI® training, you could lose a comfortable dress size / couple of trouser sizes, shedding 3-6kg of FAT, predominantly from those stubborn hard to get rid of areas of stomach, buttocks, hips and thighs. ere are also improvements in skin tone, and overall feeling of health and wellbeing. In addition to the targeted fat burn machines, HYPOXI® offer the dermology bed, which is amazing for skin tone, and delivers remarkable changes to cellulite and improvements in connective tissue. ere is no risk to saggy skin, losing weight with HYPOXI®. e HDC (dermology bed) operates a similar principle to cupping massage. With 400 active pressure chambers strategically placed within the HD-Pressure suit (similar to

a masseuse's 2 cups), it is exercising the skin. Following 30 minutes of gentle exercise on one of 3 different types of targeted fat burn machines, the HYPOXI®-Coach will be confident through ongoing monitoring that you have had an effective treatment and will be metabolising fats in the target areas for the next 6-8 hours. During HYPOXI® training, your heart rates are monitored and training modified if necessary, and for the pear shapes ladies the additional measure of a temperature increase in the thigh. Temperature in the thigh would normally drop during conventional exercise but with 30 minutes of HYPOXI®-Training our pear shaped ladies see an increase of between 3-8 degrees in their thigh, 4 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

demonstrating a successful targeted fat burn session. Conventional training or diets have practically no effect on female figure types due to their unevenly distributed circulatory system and the restricted metabolism. HYPOXI® training will quickly and effectively reduce these targeted areas. With 6 weeks of HYPOXI® on the S120/L250 machines, we see on average an 8cm reduction in a single stomach measurement, and 5 cm reduction in a single thigh measurement (figures concluded from a study of 100 HYPOXI® South Woodford clients 2011-2015). For the apple shaped ladies and gentlemen, the waist nips in, the stomach reduces, and the love handles diminish achieving an all round balanced body change on the targeted areas HYPOXI®'s vacunaut machine provides the pressure changes through a unique suit to the tummy area, whilst simply walking on a treadmill and keeping the heart rate below a certain level. On average in 6 weeks, clients will lose 8cm from a single measure of the tummy Academic studies, as well as practice, show HYPOXI® to be 3-5 times more effective in terms of circumference loss versus conventional diet and exercise for the same amount of weight loss. A study conducted 23/11/10, and the subsequent paper written by Prof.Dr.med.Christoph M Bamberger of the University of Hamburg concluded that "HYPOXI® provides a scientifically proven method of systematic body fat reduction in the problem areas."n

MEN’S PERFECT ABS Are you taking your belly on holidays or you’re leaving it at home? The Vacunaut® and PressureSuit The Vacunaut® and PressureSuit are an effective combination for treating common problem areas such as the stomach and hips. The Vacunaut® technical unit produces alternating high and low pressure.

TARGETED FIGURE SHAPING WITH THE HYPOXI-METHOD® A beautiful figure cannot always be achieved through exercise and intense diet. This is because your body only burns fat which it can easily access. It will not burn fat in areas where circulation is poor. Diet and exercise do not always combat cellulite either. It is established that weight loss and muscle building do not necessarily improve the texture or your skin. In order to shape your figure and smooth your skin, problematic areas of your body need to be targeted. This is exactly how HYPOXI-Method® works it concentrates on your problem areas during an easy cardio training program. Targeted metabolic stimulation and a healthy diet are the key factors to achieving your right body proportions and desired figure. HYPOXI-Method® has been proven to yield amazing results just after a few sessions.

Sylwia Blackman is waiting to help you in achieving the best results

Journalist Jake, from renowned magazine Gay UK, writes a delightful article on his positive experience at Hypoxi South Woodford. “I popped into the South Woodford branch where the ultra friendly Sylwia and her team greeted me. Essentially, you step

into a suit, take a 30 - minute walk and lose weight without trying. Sounds too good to be true, but within just 6 sessions I could tell it was working. The next morning after my first session I woke to find I actually felt thinner. Around 125 compression cups suck and massage at your abdomen, lower stomach and love handles - all those problematic areas which tend to be the most difficult areas to shift fat from. It’s well worth considering if you, like me, have tried and failed at losing those last few pounds.”

HEALTH & BEAUTY

DR ASH PARMAR

Feel Good DENTISTRY

ARE YOU DENTALLY HEALTHY?

A

s we start a new year, getting healthier is a key focus for so many of us. But how much thought do we put in to our dental health? Most people have gum disease to some degree. Many people are not aware of the harm that plaque bacteria can cause in the mouth. People walk around with broken teeth, or dormant dental abscesses. Also, if you have many missing teeth, then chewing is compromised; food may be ingested in bigger pieces – this can lead to indigestion and other health problems. So, these are my top five dental tips for readers of LIFE magazine for 2017: 1. STOP SMOKING Smoking is linked to gum disease, which causes loosening of teeth and eventual loss of teeth. Smoking also causes bad breath, and can lead to oral cancer. People who want to replace missing teeth with dental implants should also stop smoking. 2. SEE A HYGIENIST A hygienist is a professional person that helps maintain healthy gums. Harmful plaque and tartar deposits that build up beneath the gum levels need to be removed to ensure you have fresh breath and a clean, healthy mouth.

3. CUT DOWN ON FIZZY DRINKS AND JUICES Fizzy drinks, juices and citric fruits have a lot of acid in them. is acid can easily damage the surface enamel and erode teeth away. Treatment to sort out these problems in the future is complex and expensive. Remember, prevention is better than cure! 4. REDUCE SUGAR LEVELS We all love sweet things! However, too much sugar in the diet is harmful to teeth, as it causes holes (decay). Decay left to progress deep in to a tooth causes extreme pain and discomfort in the form of a dental abscess. Don’t let it get to that stage. If you have a broken or damaged tooth/teeth, then get help and advice. 5. CLEAN BETWEEN TEETH I find it surprising how many people don’t floss or clean between teeth with the small brushes. Food and plaque stagnates between teeth causing many health problems and bad breath. Simply spending a couple minutes a day will ensure ideal dental health. n

Award winner Frances Furlong Rgn Bsc hons Inp. offers a wide range of treatments for Men and Women

I suffer from very deep brow lines and an expressional face which, as I have got older this has made me age quite quickly. A friend and work colleague suggested I have a consultation with Frances to see if anything could help me. Frances suggested muscle relaxing injections in 3 areas. I felt under no pressure to have this done but only reassurance from Frances that this procedure was the right way forward for me! I went ahead with the muscle relaxing injections in June and the results have been amazing. I am very pleased with my results and will definitely be keeping up with my muscle relaxing injections! I feel 10 years younger and very confident with my appearance.

I can highly recommend Frances Furlong for a very professional and friendly service but most of all the confidence she has given me. Rebecca Nott - Essex

THIS MONTH FEATURES A - L DON'T MISS NEXT MONTH'S M - Z! More importantly protect you from daily ageing UV rays. B - Break a sweat, it's so important to exercise for your all over well being, but we often think of exercise as attending the gym, brisk walks for 20 minutes a day gives our mind and bodies the boost we need as it's something most of us can do easily. If you have mobility issues then swimming is the ideal fitness choice and really helps soothe aching joints. C - Cold Climate Cuisine. If you are drawn towards stodgy comfort food in winter, you're not alone. But there are plenty of ways to fill up with nutritious, healthy food without putting on weight. Warming stews and soups will help you get your five-a-day while seeing off hunger. D - Defying Gravity, during the ageing process we lose fat from our faces and we get loose skin and the dreaded jowling. I have devised an excellent combination approach using dermal fillers to naturally replace lost volume and using muscle relaxing injections to lift the jaw line and turkey neck. E - Early signs of ageing, looking after your skin in your teens and early 20's will mean you are ahead of the game as far as anti-ageing goes. Wearing a daily SPF like Heliocare gel which is non comedogenic so won't give you spots, helps to fight daily UV damage. Don't pick your spots, invest in a good antibacterial cleanser like Inspira Med Prime Cleanser which has a blend of glycolic and salicylic acids to reduce inflammation, clean the skin and pores and promotes collagen boosting. F - Fatty deposits,

5 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

it's so frustrating when you eat well and work out. Yet certain parts of your body cling on to fat and spoils your overall look. I often get clients who are slim but hold fat under there chin area, mesotherapy fat reducing injections can really help, other common areas are above the knees, love handles, bra strap line and inner thighs. G - Good night's sleep, while the run up to Christmas and New Year can be a whirlwind of late nights and early mornings, don't forget the importance of sleep. Make sure you get your eight hours when you can to get a full body and mind recharge. Loving the new Fitbit watch and App that assess how well you sleep each night! H - Hair loss in women, a very distressing problem. Telogen Effluvium (shredding of hair) from fad diets, age related deterioration and early female pattern hair loss can respond well to multivitamins or specific hair supplements such as Viviscal. It's always best to seek professional advice from a specialist to get the right diagnosis and treatment plan. I - is for invest in good skin products. Please do not be fooled by extremely high priced products, instead look for brands that contain higher concentrates of the right ingredients for your specific skin concerns. Inspira Med has just launched Magic Spheres serums which are fabulous, or for a real bespoke serum go for Oxynergy Paris personalised serum to suit you perfectly. J - Jasmine Tea. e scent of Jasmine promotes a sense of well-being and calm. Jasmine tea, with its delicate but exotic scent, is soothing to your spirit as soon as you smell it being brewed. Stress and unhealthy skin go hand in hand, look for calming teas like chamomile and teas rich in antioxidants like green tea. A simple and effectively daily add on that won't break the bank. K - keep your glow, regular mild skin peels like the Zo Obaji stimulator peel is a red carpet treatment in Hollywood! Exfoliate and add natural skin brightner creams and serums to your existing regime like vitamin C, CO Q10 and vitamin A. L - look after yourself this year, do things that make you happy and STRESS free, make a plan to keep on top of all your health needs, regular dental check ups and hygiene appointments, mole checks, blood pressure monitoring and blood tests that can indicate deficiencies in the body. Don't just accept things like being tired all the time, or overlook changes to skin lesions after all, prevention is better than cure. n

URBAN MYTH

KITCHENS MADE IN-HOUSE, TAILORED FOR YOUR HOME

T

he word ‘bespoke’ is often used to describe designer kitchens and it refers to one that has been made from scratch, designed purely with the buyers needs in mind and manufactured to fit exactly into the required space. Your desired kitchen is totally built around you rather than your ideas having to adapt to an off the shelf version. You would be forgiven for thinking that ‘bespoke’ also has to mean expensive. At Urban Myth we believe that every kitchen has to be different, unique to those that will use it. at’s why, as well as an extensive range of kitchens from Germany and Italy, we also have our own range ‘Urban Life’. ese kitchens are made in our own factory by skilled craftsmen using state of the art machinery. By having a factory “in-house” our designers are able to create a kitchen exactly fitted to your space at a price you might not expect. Superior quality kitchens designed to your exact specification. From the very first meeting we invest a great deal of time learning about your needs and lifestyle. It’s not until 5 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 7

our designers feel they understand your complete wish-list that they will begin to suggest kitchen ranges and styles that they feel will match. With an almost endless list of materials, finishes and colours to choose from, no two Urban Myth kitchens are the same. Total peace of mind. We want to take the stress out of commissioning a new kitchen, and your designer and their team are on hand to answer any questions you may have to ensure you are completely satisfied throughout the entire process. In short, we work with you from concept to completion to deliver a kitchen that meets your exact requirements and a service that exceeds your expectations. Room for romance Romance is a funny old thing; it can sneak upon you, hit you like a thunderbolt, or just be tantalisingly out of reach, but there’s one place where it’s all too easy to feel the love - at home.

R

ooms which are cosy, cherishing and cosseting are as good as a hug on a cold winter’s day, while those dressed with tactile ‘touch-me’ textures and sensual curves seduce the senses. Similarly, while love comes in all shapes and sizes, so do settings, and there are several looks to fall for, which could appeal if you’re flirting, infatuated or totally committed to a romantic decor choice. If all things amour set your heart racing, be inspired this 14th February and use the red of those classic love tokens, hearts and roses, as a decor cue. Pastel pinks and pretty touches are for those with a head-over-heels crush on fashionable boudoir style, while neutral tones, skilfully embellished with decorative accents, are so subtle that they have a timeless appeal. So don’t wait for love to come knocking - simply romance the rooms!

Red’s not for the faint-hearted, as its rich shades can overpower. But allow it to star in a pure white room, and it will leave no doubt of your love of drama. “Red is undoubtedly the most dynamic colour in the spectrum,” says Marianne Shillingford, creative director for Dulux. “We are drawn to it as it attracts attention and promises excitement with an edge of danger. Whether it’s a little red dress, a lipstick, roses or a sport’s car, this colour always has impact. That’s because all colours have wavelengths, similar to sound, and each has a distinctive characteristic. As red has the longest wavelength, it could be described in sound terms as mimicking a pounding heart or a beating drum, and stimulates the appetite for everything, including love and passion. Remember also that bursts of passion are exciting in a relationship - and bold colours enliven rooms. Consider painting a piece of furniture in your favourite red shade, and add pops of red - ‘kisses’ - in accessories.” Heartfelt Touches A sofa’s a vital ingredient for that classic romantic movie scene; open fire, candlelight and a sumptuous sofa. Heart-shaped accessories may abound at this time of year, but avoid the naff and predictable - there are more quirky, interesting pieces around.

Gothic gets a 21 Century restyle at the Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair

The Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair starts the New Year with an unusual Foyer display, a 21st Century interpretation of Gothic design - featuring beautiful period examples refreshed by modern styling, including carved and decorated furniture, mirrors and architectural elements, diffused with select 20th century pieces and even a dash of steampunk and elaborate pattern for a contemporary, dramatic spirit.

T

ypical gothic decoration, which should be light and airy in feel, includes the pointed arch and lancet window, slender columns, trefoil and quatrefoil tracery, leaf and fleur-de-lys (and later heraldic) motifs, which appear in English and European interiors from the 13th century onwards. The style has proved enduringly popular, remaining in wide use throughout England to the 16th century, and experiencing revivals in the mid-18th century, the Regency and later Victorian periods, and heavily influencing the Arts & Crafts movement.

The Fair will offer a fresh perspective on how this style – which originated as light, delicate and highly decorated grandeur - can work in new ways for today’s interiors. Taking historic inspiration from Strawberry Hill House (built by Horace Walpole, born 1717) and Jane Austen’s ‘gothic’ novel Northanger Abbey (published 1817), the foyer display of the Winter Fair will weave a gothic-infused fantasy for modern times. Around 145 exhibitors will be taking part, bringing the wonderful range of period design that customers have come to expect, encompassing the practical, the statement piece, the eccentric and the purely elegant. With furniture and objects for sale dating back to the 17th century and up to the 1970s, every era of style and craftsmanship can be found at the Decorative Fair, the go-to event for interior design trade and savvy private buyers hunting the perfect one-off piece. Furniture (fine, formal, country and decorative antique, art deco and mid-century designs) lighting, accessories (mirrors, glassware, ceramics, treen), collectors’ items including fine and vintage couture jewellery, textiles and art of every kind from folk to contemporary can be found. Some of the most influential interior designers shop at the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair: Rose Uniacke attends every event and has brought clients such as David and Victoria Beckham; Max Rollit and Edward Hurst the leading international antiques dealers turned decorators are often first in the queue on opening day; Rose Tarlow, US interiors guru to the stars, loves to buy country and folk furniture and naive art; and many UK decorators and trade buyers including Nina

Campbell, Rita Konig, Charlotte Crosland, Guy Goodfellow, Soho House, Candy & Candy and Veere Grenney find it a unique resource. At the recent Autumn 2016 Fair (held from 27 September to 2 October), there was a keen interest among UK and international buyers for smart, formal, embellished antique furniture as well as unique 20th century designs, and unusual painted and decorated antiques which are such a trademark of the Fair. This was also the first occasion on which the Mezzanine level of the Marquee was incorporated into the Fair, with a dozen, mainly new, exhibitors. Admission: £10.00 on the door only, including catalogue which gives readmission throughout the week, or register at www.decorativefair.com to join the mailing list and receive free tickets to all future Decorative Fairs.
