SANDBANKS LIFE

Build Your Dream Home with UK Signature Homes

Full turn key projects for developers and private clients

Many of us fantasise about escaping to a sunny tropical island with palm trees and sandy beaches, but you don’t have to get on a plane and travel hundreds of miles to do this. Brownsea Island may not have the palm trees, but it’s certainly got beautiful sandy beaches and stunning views over Poole Harbour across to the Purbeck Hills.

We are lucky to live in an area with some of the most beautiful coastline in the UK to explore on our doorstep, but there is no denying the lure of enjoying boating further afield, be it the white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and warm winters of the Caribbean, or the variety of countries and cultures to explore a bit closer to home in the Mediterranean. For many, knowing where to start when thinking about boating abroad is a challenge. There can be language barriers to overcome, understanding of local fiscal and regulatory rules and the need to build a network of contacts to help take care of the boat.

From the team behind the award-winning Dorset Seafood Festival comes a brand new, intimate event designed for those who savour the finer things in life. Set in the stunning surrounds of Langham Wine Estate, Langham & The Sea is a weekend of relaxed luxury where exceptional seafood meets world-class English sparkling wine. This is not your average food festival. It’s a carefully curated celebration of flavour, craftsmanship and countryside charm.

EMBRACING OUR WARMER SUMMERS

The UK is well known for its temperate, often unpredictable climate. However, in recent years, the country has experienced a noticeable shift. British summers are becoming hotter, drier and more prolonged, redefining how people connect with the sea.

One of the best ways to enjoy a hot day is on the water with a refreshing sea breeze and to make the most of this, you need a boat that is designed for the occasion. Enter Fjord Motor Yachts – a brand known for its Scandinavian design since the 1950s and,

“One of the best ways to enjoy a hot day is on the water with a refreshing sea breeze and to make the most of this, you need a boat that is designed for the occasion”

more recently, the prestige of German design and construction, with innovative use of space and luxurious open-air entertaining areas.

Open Plan Living: Ideal for Warmer Weather

One of the standout features of a Fjord yacht is its open-plan layout. Unlike many traditional cruisers with closed cockpits or heavily enclosed cabins, Fjord prioritises spacious, walkaround decks with minimal obstructions.

This open design allows for an unbeatable feeling of space with an unencumbered connection to the sea, making it perfect for Britain’s increasingly Mediterranean-style summers.

The large sun pads, aft lounge and dining areas and retractable bimini systems enable easy transitions between sunbathing and shaded comfort, depending on the time of day. For families and groups entertaining on board, this layout offers a social atmosphere on the water with flexible dining, lounging, and seating configurations. Alongside the open-air feel, every Fjord’s hallmark T-Top with pillars down to the bulwark, can be enclosed with a cockpit canopy to make the most of the space even when the weather turns. This key design feature, often one of the perceived drawbacks with open T-Top boats, sets Fjord apart from the competition.

Easy Access to the Sea

We are fortunate to have some beautiful coastline around the Solent with sheltered bays for swimming and watersports, so you need a boat designed to make the most of it.

“The blend of practicality, style, and a variety of configuration options makes a Fjord stand out from the crowd”

Fjord’s integrated swim platforms make it easy and safe to dive in and climb back on board, catering to children and less experienced swimmers.

For models starting from the 41XL, there is an option for a hydraulic lowering platform that can be submerged just below the surface, creating a luxurious “beach club” experience at anchor. This feature is perfect for younger children, providing a safe and stable play area that can be only just submerged. If you prefer to use this space for shore or water toys, you can also store a tender or jet ski on the platform giving quick and easy access to the water.

Performance and Day Cruising

Fjord yachts are tailored for day cruising in total luxury and comfort. The blend of practicality, style, and a variety of configuration options makes a Fjord stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s a Saturday lunch run to the Isle of Wight or a Champagne sunset cruise off Salcombe, the Fjord makes it easy to enjoy these spontaneous pleasures with minimal fuss and maximum comfort.

In a country where boating once meant dodging rain showers and packing thermals, the new era of warmer British summers is transforming expectations. Now, more than ever, boaters are looking for boats that combine performance, open-air luxury, and ease of use. The Fjord range meets these needs with effortless style. SEAFOOD & SOUNDS 2025 LAUNCH

Iknow, I never talk about how proud I am of BCP and the brilliant people in it (ha!)… but last night was one of those moments that reminded me exactly why I shout about it so much.

We were celebrating the launch of Seafood & Sounds 2025 at The St Tropez Club, and what a night it was. A buzzing room full of amazing Poole people, a few glasses of fizz, great seafood, and a big helping of local pride.

Now in its third year, Seafood & Sounds is the brainchild of five brilliant local businesses: City Cruises, The Custom House, The Poole Arms, Saint Tropez Restaurant, and Truly Scrumptious. Together, they’ve built something really special; an event that champions local seafood, showcases fantastic Dorset musicians, and brings Old Town Poole and The Quay to life with energy and joy.

But it’s more than just good food and great music. It’s a celebration of community. It brings people together, supports local trade, and shows what’s possible when passionate locals roll up their sleeves and do something to make a difference.

The host venue, St Tropez Restaurant & Club, is a stylish modern building on Poole Quay with stunning harbour views. Known for authentic French cuisine, it offers an intimate club with private pods for up to ten guests, plus a vibrant restaurant atmosphere. Owners Severine & Frederic, veterans of the hospitality industry, previously ran the award-winning Guildhall Tavern before launching St Tropez Lounge & Club, continuing their passion for French seafood.

A recent recipient of the 2025 Awards of Excellence, St Tropez is renowned for warm service, a Poole oyster bar, fresh tapas, and standout dishes such as monkfish medallions in red Thai curry sauce. Using the best local ingredients, they create flavours that truly shine.

Massive hats off to Jeanette Walsh and the crew — this is exactly the kind of spark we need more of.

MASTER THE GALLEY: COOKING ONBOARD WITH MARTIN DAWKINS

A whole host of culinary experts and producers at the Southampton International Boat Show to tickle your taste buds

The Rustic Chef, Martin Dawkins, will headline the Southampton International Boat Show’s exciting new ‘Chefs Ahoy!’ stage, serving up delicious ways to cook onboard every day - perfect for any galley setup.

The debut feature will be hosted within the show’s brand-new Boating Academy, where Martin will demonstrate a variety of seafaring recipes using exhibitor products such as virgin olive

oils from Two&One and flavour-packed hot sauces from Callaloo Corner, inspired by Caribbean cooking. Visitors can then purchase the products showcased on stage.

“Life aboard a boat means that cooking needs to be practicalbut that doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful” Martin says. “With a compact grill or a two-burner stove, you can create meals that are full of life and flavour. With just a few skewers of marinated prawns,

some grilled vegetables in foil, or a whole fish seasoned with herbs and lemon, you can have a restaurant-worthy meal with minimal cleanup.”

Mentored by chefs such as Marcus Wareing at Petrus and Alex Aitken at Le Poussin, Martin champions local, sustainable ingredients to celebrate seasonal flavours.

“One of the most rewarding parts of cooking onboard is how naturally it aligns with sustainable, seasonal living. Sourcing seafood responsibly and relying on local produce isn’t just a passing trend - it’s essential for maintaining the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems and supporting the coastal communities that depend on them,” Martin continues. “When you choose fresh, local ingredients, you’re not only treating yourself to better flavour and nutrition, you’re also casting a vote for healthier oceans and resilient food systems.”

The ‘Chefs Ahoy!’ stage will also feature the Good Evans Kitchen, an award-winning cookery school based in Hampshire, plus Jay Geddes and Gary Morton Jones, otherwise known as the Dishy Dads, with their groanworthy puns and terrible dance moves.

“Our goal for the Southampton International Boat Show is simple: feed bellies and funny bones,” Jay concludes.

Also joining the lineup is Joshie Man (Josh Harris), a young autistic chef who communicates non-verbally and shares his passion for cooking through the campaign Let Them Have Their Voices, led by his father. Joshie now travels across the UK, learning from top chefs and sharing simple, delicious recipes. His story goes beyond food, it’s about breaking barriers and

inspiring others. He’s excited to show how fun and easy onboard cooking can be.

Chefs Ahoy! will also serve as a spotlight for a selection of local South Coast producers, offering everything from fresh seafood to zingy sauces and award-winning gins, crafted with natural ingredients and traditional methods. Whether you’re looking to discover new flavours or savour local favourites, there’s something for every palate.

With opportunities to taste, learn, shop, and engage directly with chefs and producers, The Chefs Ahoy! stage is the perfect spot to take a break from browsing boats and immerse yourself in the culinary side of sailing.

The Southampton International Boat Show takes place from 19-28 September. Catch Martin Dawkins and friends daily at the Boating Academy throughout the show and get ready to sail away with a full stomach and plenty of inspiration.

ASTON MARTIN DB12: ELEGANCE WITH AN EDGE

The Aston Martin DB12 isn’t simply a new chapter—it’s a confident rewrite of the grand tourer narrative. Touted as the world’s first “Super Tourer,” it marries highperformance engineering with elevated luxury, setting a fresh benchmark for modern motoring.

From first glance, the DB12 captivates. Its broad stance, assertive grille, and sculpted contours speak of purpose and poise. It’s a car equally at ease gracing the entrance of a Riviera hotel or sweeping through the curves of a mountain pass.

Beneath the bonnet, a 671-horsepower twin-turbo V8 delivers exhilarating acceleration—0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Yet this is no brute. With an adaptive chassis and finely tuned steering, the DB12 offers a drive that’s both spirited and composed, rewarding those who appreciate nuance behind the wheel.

Inside, Aston Martin has crafted a space that feels both contemporary and timeless. The cabin is a study in detail: handstitched leather, brushed metal accents, and a new digital interface that complements, rather than replaces, tactile controls. It’s a balance of innovation and heritage—thoughtfully executed.

Comfort is never an afterthought. With 12-way adjustable seats, ambient lighting, and the option of a panoramic roof, the DB12 offers a refined environment for both driver and passenger. It’s not just a cockpit—it’s a sanctuary in motion.

More than a car, the DB12 is a statement of intent. It appeals to those who value legacy but live in the present. For the discerning few, it’s a vehicle that reflects taste, ambition, and a love of the drive.

While the echoes of Bond remain, the DB12 doesn’t rely on cinematic nostalgia. It stands confidently on its own—real, tangible, and ready.

In essence, the DB12 is Aston Martin’s most complete expression to date: a fusion of elegance and edge, crafted for those who expect more.

The Dorset County Show

Dorchester Showground, 6 & 7 September 2025

The Dorset County Show returns to the Dorchester Showground on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September 2025, serving as Dorset’s annual celebration of agriculture, countryside life, and the county’s rural heritage. Held on the first weekend of September, the event marks the end of the harvest season, drawing together farmers, producers, families, and visitors keen to experience everything that defines the region’s countryside spirit. With gates opening from 8:30 am and closing at 6:00 pm both days, the Show offers an immersive blend of traditional and contemporary rural attractions across fields and marquees.

Livestock competitions form the core of the Show’s agricultural emphasis. Visitors will see cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, alpacas, and other farm animals judged in dedicated rings. Homecraft and horticultural exhibitions also take centre stage, with entries closing in August for categories such as crafts, flower arranging, and produce, including children’s creative entries like decorated pebbles, clay models, and space-themed art. These displays offer a charming insight into both local talent and age-old rural crafts, celebrated with regional pride.

A highlight of the weekend is the Main Ring’s live entertainment. In 2025, visitors can witness the Paul Hannam Stunt Show, showcasing daredevil motorbike stunts and precision riding, alongside the action horses display led by Ben Atkinson –featured stars from TV dramas like Poldark and Peaky Blinders – that

stage dramatic horse performances and acrobatics in Dorset. This high-adrenaline spectacle adds a contemporary thrill to the traditional show.

Food and entertainment also feature strongly. The Dorset’s Largest Larder Food Hall champions local producers and artisanal goods, offering everything from honey and chutneys to award-winning cheeses and baked delicacies. While roaming the Showground, families can enjoy a festival atmosphere with live music, fairground rides, educational animal areas, and hands-on demonstrations in blacksmithing, sheep-shearing, milking, and vintage machinery.

As Dorset’s largest county showcase, the Show attracts around 55,000 visitors each year and deposits thousands into local charities. Offering a rich blend of rural spectacle, entertainment, and community spirit, this year’s edition promises to enchant locals and visitors alike with a heartfelt tribute to Dorset life. dorsetcountyshow.co.uk

A tropical island paradise on your doorstep

Many of us fantasise about escaping to a sunny tropical island with palm trees and sandy beaches, but you don’t have to get on a plane and travel hundreds of miles to do this. Brownsea Island may not have the palm trees, but it’s certainly got beautiful sandy beaches and stunning views over Poole Harbour across to the Purbeck Hills. Despite its modest size, just 1.5 miles long and 0.75 miles wide, approximately 500 acres in total, this island has a lot to offer visitors. Many people think of the charming red squirrels when they hear the name Brownsea Island. It is one of only two places in southern England that has a population of red squirrels, the other being the Isle of Wight.

There are many other natural wonders on the island to enjoy in the summertime, including a very raucous tern colony. Both Sandwich tern and common tern breed on the shingle islands in Brownsea Lagoon which is managed by the Dorset Wildlife Trust. There are several bird hides dotted along the edge of the Lagoon, at the first hide (Avocet) you’ll often find a volunteer with a scope, sharing live images on a screen, a perfect way to get closer views without disturbing the birds.

Brownsea Island is part of the UK’s first ever ‘super’ National Nature Reserve (NNR) on the Purbeck Heaths in Dorset, this is one of the most biodiverse places in the UK and is home to thousands of species of wildlife, including 450 that are listed as rare, threatened or protected. From the curious, nocturnal nightjar and the Dartford warbler to sand lizards and rare insects, this island is a haven for wildlife.

The National Trust’s Land, Outdoors and Nature strategy outlines ambitious plans to halt and reverse the decline of wildlife across its UK-managed landscapes. As part of this mission, the Trust has already created or

restored 25,000 hectares of vital habitat, an area larger than 33,000 Premier League football pitches, demonstrating significant progress in its commitment to nature recovery.

To truly experience the island’s nature, many visitors choose to stay overnight at the historic Brownsea Island campsite. The home of Lord Baden Powell’s inaugural Scout camp. With no traffic noise, great facilities, stunning views and easy access to the beach it’s got to be one of the best campsites in Dorset. For those who prefer a roof over their heads, there’s a bunkhouse, a bothy, and two cosy holiday cottages available to rent year-round.

The National Trust is hosting a full programme of events this summer, from free family-friendly Summer of Play sessions like bug hunting, bushcraft tasters and botanical printmaking, to a Treasure Island pirate adventure day. There are also music and food evenings that begin with a scenic cruise aboard the vintage yacht

The Dorset Queen, open-air theatre performances of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and wellness experiences like yoga and forest bathing.

If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to an island paradise, now’s the time to make it a reality.

TWHERE DREAMS TAKE SHAPE: A LAKE, A LEGACY, AND THE RETURN OF BELLINI YACHT

he afternoon sun catches the varnished mahogany hull as it cuts through the crystalline waters of Lake Iseo, leaving barely a ripple in its wake. For a young boy watching from the shore, pressed against the railings of the Bellini Nautica yard, such moments felt like glimpses into another world entirely. Those vintage Rivas, moored like floating sculptures at the pontoons, weren’t just boats—they were promises of adventure, freedom, and an indefinable elegance that would shape a lifetime.

That boy was Oliver Lanza, and those summer afternoons in northern Italy, visiting his family home by the lake, planted the seeds of what would become Sebino Yachts, the UK dealership for the

relaunched Bellini Yacht brand.

Having an Italian father meant summers were spent by Lake Iseo, where being on the water wasn’t just recreation—it was the very essence of summer itself. Whether floating on a lilo, paddling a canoe, or aboard a boat, the water offered something irreplaceable: liberty from the heat, peace from the world, and a front-row seat to some of the most dramatically beautiful scenery in Italy.

The Bellini yard was always a special pilgrimage. Oliver would linger there as long as possible, mesmerised by those jaw-droppingly beautiful vintage Rivas tied to the pontoons, dreaming of what it might be like to set foot on such masterpieces. Bellini Nautica,

having built exquisite mahogany boats in the 1960s, had moved towards sales, restoration, and service after founder Battista Bellini’s passing. His son Romano was incredibly passionate about wooden boats and deeply uncomfortable with the fibreglass material beginning to dominate the industry. Rather than compromise, Romano ceased new boat production, focusing instead on maintaining the many timber boats still gracing the waters.

This meant their yard was always full of the most beautiful craft imaginable—a young boy’s dream, though Oliver didn’t realise he was observing the quiet preservation of a dying art.

In his teenage years, fortune introduced Oliver to Romano’s son, Battista. He spent time in the UK studying, staying with the Lanza family whilst travelling to and from London. What began as hospitality grew into genuine friendship over the years. Battista understood both worlds—the Italian passion for beautiful boats and the British approach to business and seamanship.

By 2024, when Oliver heard that Battista had decided to begin building boats again, he called him immediately. “Do you have a UK dealer?” he asked. The pause that followed was filled with possibility. It was clear that Battista was thrilled to have Oliver on board as the UK dealer for his relaunched Bellini Yacht. The circle was complete—the boy who once pressed his face against the railings of their yard would now be bringing their boats to British waters.

Oliver’s background in marine equipment, working for the family business supplying UK yacht builders and end users, had given him a critical understanding of the yacht market. But beyond the technical knowledge, there was something deeper driving this venture: a deeply ingrained passion and desire to see Bellini Yacht succeed.

Much like the factory itself, Sebino Yachts is a family endeavour. Oliver’s wife Sophie has been instrumental in turning visions into reality, supporting him whilst taking direct involvement in the presentation of the business. Even their two young children have played their part, helping with content and filming! They’re striving to make the process of purchasing and owning a Bellini a very special one. It’s an exclusive club, and every client matters.

Establishing a new dealer with a new product brings inevitable challenges. They’re introducing British boaters to a brand that’s both

historic and entirely fresh. Their marketing budget isn’t infinite, so they invest tremendous energy into every exhibition, display, and event. They also needed to demonstrate that UK buyers could be serviced globally. The network of dealers works exceptionally well together, meaning Oliver can sell to UK clients planning to keep their boat anywhere in the world.

Yachting in the UK is evolving. People want more space onboard rather than outright performance, and the Bellini Yacht range positions itself perfectly for this shift. Generous deck space for entertaining family and friends, class-leading features like large folding balconies that connect owners and guests to the water in unprecedented ways—these boats are designed for making memories.

To Oliver, Bellini Yacht represents an iconic name in the making. It’s rare for a company with their level of pedigree and history to make a comeback. Calling on Brunello Acampora and his team for design, and Norberto Ferretti for his product knowledge, was inspired. The result is the confident and beautifully considered Astor 36—their first boat in this new chapter. Her timeless lines and spacious interior volume create something truly special. A Bellini yacht has presence in any marina. It may not be the biggest or most expensive, but it possesses charm and effortless style by the bucket load.

Standing on the dock at Casa Bellini in Christchurch, watching potential clients experience their first Bellini, Oliver is transported back to those summer afternoons on Lake Iseo. The same sense of wonder, the same recognition of something special, the same understanding that these aren’t just boats—they’re invitations to a different way of being on the water.

In a world increasingly dominated by the mass-produced and the mundane, Bellini Yacht represents something precious: the continuation of craftsmanship, the celebration of heritage, and the promise that some things are worth preserving, no matter how long the journey home.

Casa Bellini is located in Christchurch, Dorset. For more information about Bellini Yacht and Sebino Yachts, visit sebinoyachts.co.uk

Celebrating 75 Years of Racing Excellence

SILVERSTONE FESTIVAL 2025

22-24 August 2025, Bank Holiday Weekend

illed as the ultimate end-of-summer Bank Holiday bonanza, the funfuelled Silverstone Festival really lives up to its name.

Silverstone Festival (previously known as The Classic) is an award-winning event staged annually at the famous Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire: birthplace of the FIA Formula One World Championship and home to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix. The annual extravaganza is, of course, a petrolhead’s paradise packed with thousands of much-loved classic cars plus an unrivalled roster of epic retro races all stirring up treasured memories of motoring as well as motorsport’s golden eras.

The Silverstone Festival 2025 promises a packed weekend of action…

GIUSEPPE FARINA TAKES THE CHEQUERED FLAG TO WIN THE 1950 BRITISH GRAND PRIX AT SILVERSTONE

The circuit will be celebrating a monumental milestone: the 75th anniversary of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. It was back in 1950, that Silverstone was honoured to host the very first points scoring F1 World Championship race. Among the highlights is a dedicated race for 500cc Formula 3 cars, marking the first time these pint-sized legends will headline the event.

The celebrations will take place both on and off the famous Grand Prix track with record-breaking racing grids and a never-before-seen display of highly evocative cars, showcasing the full 75 years of F1 history.

Presented as ‘The World Champions Collection’, it will star legendary machines as raced by every one of the 34 Formula 1 title winners including all the greats: Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Sir Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and, most recently, Max Verstappen.

“It will be the first time such a display has ever been assembled… and it will be incredible,” enthused Nick Wigley, event director. “We wanted something really special to honour this momentous 75th anniversary milestone and this incredible World Champions Collection will do just that.”

Fans can also look forward to:

GT3 Legends Showdown: Featuring competition supercars from marques like Ferrari, McLaren, and Lamborghini, covering the golden years of 2006–2015.

Formula Libre Double-Header: A thrilling mix of single-seaters from historic eras, including F2, F3, and V8-powered F5000.

With 20 races on the programme, the event offers something for everyone. From iconic historic cars to modern classics, the variety ensures a spectacle across all three days.

But more than that, the thrilling, not-to-be-missed weekend is a true family festival bursting with activities and entertainment for all ages and interests, creating a raft of new memories that will last a lifetime.

There’s a Foodie Fest with cooking demos from famous TV chefs, an artisan market and tasting tent; a shopping village; an Adrenaline Zone with enjoyable fun fair rides and more spine-tingling experiences for thrill-seekers; a Village Green with garden games: a FanZone with F1 show cars and simulators and, further fuelling the festival vibe, there’s live music from chart-toppers on all three evenings. This summer’s headliners are Natasha Bedingfield, Craig David and Ministry of Sound Classical.

And there’s so much more, too. Jaw-dropping stunt shows, eyecatching car club cavalcades and even an on-site auction for those inspired to splash some cash on a thought-provoking classic from yesteryear.

One day is never enough at the non-stop Silverstone Festival –that’s why more and more choose to camp out for all three days.

Guaranteeing outstanding value-for-money, the price of admission includes access to both racing paddocks, all the special displays, open trackside grandstands, the majority of the interactive activities, the award-winning interactive Silverstone Museum and the impressive line-up of live music.

Indeed, afternoon tickets are also on sale for those favouring the sunset party atmosphere, while endorsing the amazing event’s family credentials accompanied children aged under 16 attend free.

So why not end this summer on a massive high and come with all the kids? There really couldn’t be a better way to spend the Bank Holiday.

The Datai Pledge: Five Years of Impactful Sustainability at

The Datai Langkawi

As The Datai Langkawi marks five years of its environmental and community impact initiative, The Datai Pledge, the natural luxury resort has proudly unveiled its fifth annual Impact Report. This comprehensive, transparent and data-rich publication outlines the measurable change achieved through this pioneering nature-positive programme in sustainability, wildlife protection, marine conservation, and youth empowerment. Rooted in four core pillars - Fish For The Future, Wildlife For The Future, Pure For The Future, and Youth For The Future - the programme and report demonstrate how luxury tourism can harmoniously support nature and community development.

As a robust sustainability and conservation programme launched in 2020, The Datai Pledge funds, supports and implements impactful initiatives on Langkawi for the protection of the island’s unique fauna, flora, and communities. Collaborating with local non-profit organisations and NGOs, The Datai Pledge conducts conservation research, marine life protection, wildlife monitoring, and youth education programmes, ensuring a long-lasting positive impact on the island’s biodiversity and communities. All proceeds from The Datai Pledge go directly to these initiatives, underscoring the resort’s

commitment to responsible tourism.

Key milestones in 2024 included 253 coral nubbins planted in Datai Bay; 96% of solid waste processed at the resort; 9,588 kg of used cooking oil converted into biofuel;192 students and 53 teachers engaged in six UN-endorsed Eco-Schools projects; 147 tons of food waste donated to local farmers as feed; and 187 metric tons of CO2 was avoided through waste management. 10,862 recycled candles were also created by The KanshaLife Project - helping create muchneeded skills training and income for the local community.

When The Datai Langkawi first envisioned The Datai Pledge, it was - as it remains - the resort’s promise to maintain a deep commitment to its rainforest, ocean, wildlife, and people. It is about making a real, tangible difference alongside the resort’s hospitality which continues to provide a best-in-class nature-positive luxury experience.

For guests looking to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings and sustainability initiatives, the resort offers a range of experiences, from nature and beach walks with the resident marine biologists and naturalists and permaculture garden tours, to upcycling workshops at The Lab and back-of-house tours. thedatai.com

INTRODUCING THE COLLECTION ONLINE: A New Era of Luxury Holiday Escapes in the UK

Aquiet revolution is happening in the UK holiday scene, and it begins with a thoughtfully curated keychain of extraordinary places to stay. The Collection Online is a new name on the luxury travel radar, but one that feels instantly established. Perhaps it’s the aesthetic of its property portfolio - a blend of heritage architecture and bold modern design in cinematic landscapes - or perhaps it’s the pedigree, built on over three decades of expertise in the self-catered stay market. Either way, this is a collection designed for those who choose their stays as carefully as their destinations.

This is no off-the-shelf portfolio. The Collection Online specialises in rare finds: a grand period property that once hosted holidays for Liberace and Churchill; a thatched cottage on the edge of the forest, where wild ponies and donkeys wander past the garden gate; a sleek coastal retreat so close to the sea, you can hear the tide turn from bed. Each property is handpicked, not just for how it looks, but for how it feels to be there.

Behind the brand is Toad Hall Cottages, a respected name with over 30 years of experience in self-catering. With nine regional offices and local teams that personally visit every property, The Collection Online offers something algorithmic travel sites never could: proper local insight. The best beaches without crowds, wild swimming spots only the locals know, and the perfect pub for a windswept Sunday roast, all shared with the kind of warmth that comes from knowing a place deeply.

Some homes are made for gatherings, with pizza ovens, swimming pools, and garden zip wires for memory-making. Others are designed for quiet luxury: hot tubs, truffle orchards, and lakeside seating spots built for doing absolutely nothing at all.

As the UK travel landscape continues to evolve, The Collection Online is carving out a niche for those who expect more from their time away. This isn’t just accommodation - it’s escapism, elevated. thecollectiononline.co.uk. 01548 233233.

THE POWER OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: A KEY SKILL FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

In an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world, academic prowess alone is no longer sufficient for true success. While traditional subjects undoubtedly provide essential knowledge, the ability to understand and manage emotions – both our own and those of others – is proving to be an equally, if not more, critical skill. This is why cultivating emotional intelligence (EI) in schools is as vital as academic achievement, empowering students to navigate complex relationships, thrive in the workplace, and foster profound personal growth.

At Talbot Heath School, this understanding is at the heart of their innovative approach to education. Recognising that wellbeing is intrinsically linked to learning and flourishing, Talbot Heath has embedded EI development throughout its curriculum and pastoral care. For younger children, the school utilises innovative colourful characters and corresponding ‘mood meters’, playful yet effective tools that help them identify and articulate their feelings, building foundational emotional literacy from an early age.

Beyond these early years, Talbot Heath employs the comprehensive Bounce mental wellbeing scale to consistently monitor and support students’ emotional states. This proactive approach allows the pastoral team to identify needs early and provide targeted interventions, ensuring no student feels unsupported.

The school’s commitment extends to offering specialised courses designed to develop emotional intelligence and resilience, expertly delivered by their dedicated Pastoral Support Manager and utilising the schools’ extensive woodlands and outdoor

areas to enhance a sense of calm and connection. These programmes equip students with practical strategies for managing stress, building healthy relationships, and developing the grit needed to overcome challenges.

By prioritising emotional intelligence alongside academic rigour, Talbot Heath School is not just preparing students for exams; they are equipping them with the essential life skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.

This holistic approach ensures that graduates are not only academically accomplished but also emotionally intelligent, resilient, and wellprepared to lead fulfilling and impactful lives.

DULWICH’S LEADING PREP SCHOOL GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH WITH LATEST WIN

This summer, Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery was delighted to be named as Independent Prep School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards 2025.

The prestigious awards, often referred to as the Oscars of education, celebrate the most outstanding schools and teachers across the UK’s state and independent sectors, recognising excellence from early years through to secondary education.

The glittering awards ceremony took place on Friday 20 June at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, London, where Rosemead was honoured alongside other exceptional schools and educators.

The judging panel, made up of leading figures from across the education sector, praised Rosemead for its personalised approach, vibrant community and holistic educational offering.

In February 2023, Rosemead joined the St Dunstan’s Education Group, a move that has helped strengthen the school’s vision and strategic development.

Speaking about the Tes Award, Nick Hewlett, CEO of the Group, said: ‘This is a phenomenal achievement for Rosemead and richly deserved. The school has been on an extraordinary journey, and I pay huge tribute to the entire leadership team who have transformed this school. It has been a joy to welcome Rosemead into the Group.

‘The Good Schools Guide was absolutely right to call Rosemead the “one to watch” in south London – and now the Tes Schools Awards have confirmed it.’

This latest recognition builds on a series of recent successes. In the last academic year, Rosemead won two prestigious awards – for Excellence and Innovation in

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards, and Best EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the Education Choices Awards 2024.

“The glittering awards ceremony took place on Friday 20 June at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, London”

Following the Tes win, Rosemead has also been shortlisted for Independent School of the Year for Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) at Independent Schools of the Year Awards which take place in October.

Rosemead was also one of the first prep schools in the country to receive a significant strength in its most recent ISI inspection.

The inspection, which was carried out in November 2023, praised Rosemead’s academic approach to learning, pastoral care and support and the positive influence of the school’s values, vision, and leadership.

‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’

Rosemead’s early years’ provision was also praised in the summary findings. ‘Leaders in the early years effectively ensure staff have high expectations of the behaviour and achievement of children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’

It added: ‘Children in the early years achieve well from their varied starting points. Adults engage with the children effectively and use appropriate questioning to develop children’s vocabulary and understanding. Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop

their reading skills well.’

Alongside the academic excellence, the report praised the ‘positive’ Roots of Rosemead, which are the school’s values system.

‘The curriculum and communication of school values, known as the ‘Roots of Rosemead’ encourage respect and strengthen pupils’ appreciation of the diversity of the school and wider community.

‘The consistent promotion of these values helps develop pupils’ moral understanding.’ Prospective families will have the opportunity to meet the leadership team, current staff and students, and learn more about the award-winning education at Rosemead at their upcoming open morning on Saturday 4 October 2025. ‘Girls’

football

is

now

one of the

most dynamic and exciting areas of school sport’ says Danny Gower

St Dunstan’s College’s Danny Gower has praised the Lionesses’ victory at this year’s Euros saying they have once again captured the hearts of the nation.

Following their win over Spain, St Dunstan’s Assistant Head, Cocurricular, Danny, said: ‘The Lionesses unforgettable victory over Spain to finish off what has been a remarkable run of performances showing tremendous grit and determination, has once again captured the heart of the nation.

‘This group continue to inspire the next generation—not only with their performances, but with their togetherness, collective belief and joy in the game. They’ve shown what’s possible,

and the future of the girls game in the UK is such an exciting one.’

Speaking about what it now means for girls’ sport, he added: ‘Girls’ football is now one of the most dynamic and exciting areas of school sport. We’re seeing unprecedented levels of participation, enthusiasm and ambition—and it’s only just beginning. The energy surrounding the women’s game is creating lasting change, and schools are playing a vital role in that transformation.’

Last year, St Dunstan’s College announced a groundbreaking partnership with Chelsea FC to widen sporting access and opportunities to young people in Lewisham. As part of the partnership,

St Dunstan’s hosts regular tournaments for young people at its sporting grounds, the Jubilee Grounds, in the heart of Catford. The initiative forms a key part of the College’s ongoing commitment to social impact and inclusion, ensuring more young people have the chance to benefit from high-quality sporting experiences and the values they promote.

‘At St Dunstan’s, we’re proud to be part of this incredible movement. Our partnership with Chelsea gives pupils and our wider community access to expert coaching and clear development

pathways,’ says Danny. ‘Hosting regular tournaments for local primary schools that help the next generation of players discover the joy of the game has been a real highlight of the year.’

Danny added: ‘The momentum is real. The opportunities are growing. And with the Lionesses continuing to be such a source of inspiration, we look forward to seeing the impact this performance has on football and girls sport in general in the coming years.’

Speaking at the time, St Dunstan’s Education Group’s CEO, Nick Hewlett said: ‘We are delighted to announce this new partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation. Sport at St Dunstan’s has been on an incredible journey in recent years, and this is the next exciting chapter in our history.

‘We are passionate about our local community, and I am particularly pleased that this new partnership will not only benefit our pupils, but young people across the whole borough. It really does have the potential to transform football across south-east London.’

Last month, St Dunstan’s College, located in Catford, was pleased to be recognised by the Education Choices Awards for its commitment to Diversity in Sport for a second year running. At St Dunstan’s, sport is a vital part of the broader educational experience, and the College continues to champion a diverse programme that encourages participation, nurtures talent, and fosters a culture of respect and belonging.

AN EDUCATION DESIGNED AROUND THE INDIVIDUAL

Success

doesn’t look the same for every child… and at Clayesmore, that’s the point.

Set in the heart of Dorset, Clayesmore has spent over 130 years helping young people uncover what success means to them.

Academic excellence is just one part of a wider educational journey that supports personal growth, confidence, and self-belief. This is a school where every person is known – not just by name, but for who they are. Teachers take time to understand each child’s strengths, challenges and aspirations, creating an environment where individuals are seen, supported and encouraged to thrive.

The journey begins in the Prep School, where a structured and nurturing setting gives younger individuals a strong foundation. Early access to specialist teaching in subjects like art, music, languages and sport sets the tone for a rich and balanced education.

As they move into the Senior School, they encounter a curriculum that challenges and inspires. From the creative arts and sciences to sport and outdoor education, there’s space for every individual to shine.

The LEX enrichment programme and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award offer meaningful opportunities to stretch beyond the classroom, helping young people build resilience, leadership and independence.

In the Sixth Form, students choose from a broad selection of A-levels and BTECs, taught in small groups with expert guidance. The end result?

Strong exam outcomes, alongside confident, grounded young adults ready to take their next step. Individual success starts with individual attention, and at Clayesmore, exceptional pastoral care sits at the heart of everything we do.

As one parent shared: “Our daughter arrived reserved and unsure. Two years later, she left with top results, her first-choice university place, a renewed self-confidence, and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Set on an expansive and picturesque campus, Clayesmore provides pupils with access to outstanding facilities – including a 25m swimming pool, astro pitches, a state-of-the-art gym, and purpose-built laboratories and creative studios. This is a school designed to inspire exploration, giving every individual the space, support and encouragement to discover who they are and all they can become.

If you’re looking for more than results –for a school that recognises your child’s unique potential – Clayesmore is where they thrive.

As an Indian student and the current Boarding Council President, I’ve come to see boarding not just as a place to stay, but as a space that helps you grow into yourself and into a community.

“What stands out most to me is how supported I’ve always felt by houseparents who genuinely care and by friends who have become family”

moments. The following is a glimpse into a Year 7 day in the life:

From the moment you step onto campus, there’s a sense of welcome in the air. Whether it’s the comforting smiles of the boarding staff, late-night conversations in the lounges, or the joy of celebrating Holi alongside Christmas and Lunar New Year, Marymount boarding is where different cultures don’t just meet, we connect. The diversity of the boarding community makes every dinner table conversation an opportunity to learn something new, and every shared tradition a chance to feel a true sense of belonging.

What stands out most to me is how supported I’ve always felt by houseparents who genuinely care and by friends who have become family. Whether we are organising themed movie nights or dance nights, cheering each other on through exams, or simply being there for one another, the spirit of community is constant and real.

Boarding at Marymount has shaped who I am. It’s taught me how to lead with empathy, live with openness, and celebrate the strength in our differences.” — Yashvi, High School Student

That spirit of connection and shared joy continues daily on campus, even in the little

“I wake up at 7:00 a.m. when the alarms start ringing down the corridor. I get dressed quickly, still yawning, and head down for breakfast between 7:30 and 7:45. The dining hall begins buzzing as we wake up more, filled with people laughing, swapping toast, and trying to look alive. Someone’s always forgotten their blazer!

At 8:20, we walk to school. I go with my friends, and we’re in a rush because someone’s shoes have disappeared again – oops! Classes are usually fun, my favourites are drama and dance. In drama, we do improv games that make everyone crack up. In dance, we learn routines that make Mondays come alive! My teachers are strict but funny, and they totally get us.

Lunch is noisy and full of energy. Everyone rushes to get their food and find a table. It’s great because we sit with our friends, chill out and share random stories. Then we head to our afternoon classes. After school finishes at 4:00, I might go to rehearsal, dance club, or just relax on the lawns with friends.

Dinner is at 6:00, then at 7:00 we have study time. Prep is not my favourite thing, but it feels good to get it done. At 8:00 we get snacks, hand in tech at 9:00, and by 9:30 we’re in bed –whispering and laughing, kind of tired but ready for the week to come.”

KENT’S BEST KEPT EDUCATIONAL SECRET

ESTABLISHED IN 1984, RIC IS A PLACE FOR INDIVIDUALS AND A SUCCESSFULLY DISTINCTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS.

ARochester Independent College education is grounded in our mission to support students to find their own direction and help them open doors to great universities. We focus on the highest levels of academic success while retaining a creative buzz. RIC is a small school with a personalised approach that has a huge impact on student achievement and self-esteem. Atmospherically relaxed, there’s an emphasis on exam success without unnecessary pressure. It’s a natural stepping-stone between school and university.

RIC students, described by The Good Schools Guide as a “strikingly nice bunch,” voice their opinions and think critically, creatively and independently. The average class size is 8. The mutual respect between teachers and students is palpable. They leave us not only with results that exceed expectations but with empathy and optimism, fluency of thinking, enthusiasm for the future and confidence about themselves and their education. Our top university destination in the last five years is UAL with 28 placements followed by UCL with 20 placements.

The first thing you’ll notice when you visit RIC is that our home is a one-of-akind urban campus at the heart of a designated conservation area. It’s a must-see for prospective families. The historic site, with listed buildings linked by award winning wildlife gardens, has a uniquely warm sense of place in which our diverse community of 425 students and 100 staff study and work. We are home to 180 weekly and full boarders who all live on site. Our campus is designed for forging friendships, creating community and opening up educational opportunities rooted in the natural world. It’s the backdrop for an atmosphere that’s a bit more university or liberal arts college than school: small class sizes; first-name terms with teachers; a campus spirit. Nip through one of our passageways and you’ll find quirk and character, green space and quiet corners.

As we celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the College in 2024-5 we’re committed to maintaining focus on what makes the special alchemy of RIC culture work: an aspirational, informal and creative environment, a commonsensical flexibility of approach and a focus on the individual needs of every student who comes to us.

We look forward to showing you our school.

“It’s hard to imagine better provision for the artistically inclined.” – Good Schools Guide

“Flexibility is the watchword here. Whether you are looking for 1 year GCSE or A level course, the opportunity to retake exams or a chance to focus exclusively on the Creative Arts or preparing for medical school, RIC offers it. Not only that, pupils can start at different points in the school year, into any year group with any subject combination. Class sizes average 8 so the style of teaching leans more towards university tutorials. The personalised attention means excellent results with many securing places at top art colleges, and medical schools as well as Oxford and Cambridge. Everyone is on first-name terms and with no uniform the atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and purposeful.”

Fall-Winter
collection celebrates the House’s dear art of travel echoing to the railway wanderings and train platforms where departing strangers, fleeting lovers, and eternal unknowns cross paths. Nicolas

Ghesquière composed a multitude of stylistic narratives as a tribute to the euphoria, melancholy, and anticipation that define the experience of travel.

Appearing in the Fall Winter 2025-2026 fashion show campaign, Express, the latest signature bag by Nicolas Ghesquière, symbolises the rise of transportation that blends of adventure and wonder, a new chapter through which Louis Vuitton crafts luggage that is at once sophisticated, feminine, and functional. An intuitive blend of elegance and excellence, Express – which was the original name of the 1930s iconic Speedy bag - is designed in grained leather and velvet calfskin, enhancing the timelessness of its shape. Each model highlights the Louis Vuitton’s signature codes, such as Monogram Canvas on the handles and key bell, the gold-tone padlock securing the double-zip closure, and Monogram jacquard lining.

Emma Stone and Hoyeon perfectly embodied enchantment and adventure spirit of the campaign. An Academy Award-winning actress, Emma stone is distinguished for her versatility across both independent cinema and globally acclaimed productions, including performances in La La Land, The Favourite, and Poor Things. A breakout star from the global phenomenon Squid Game, Hoyeon has quickly risen as both a powerful acting talent and an international fashion icon, building on her roots as one of Korea’s leading models.

In a saturated beauty landscape, OSKIA has quietly and confidently carved out a niche all its own. For 15 years, this British-born brand has championed a unique approach: scientifically-proven, nutritionally-led skincare that goes far beyond trend ingredients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C. Each formula is a symphony of actives—sometimes up to forty— carefully developed in OSKIA’s own factory in Wales. At the heart of it all is founder Georgie Cleeve, whose personal skin journey— from acne and post-pregnancy melasma to menopause—has deeply shaped the brand’s evolution. We caught up with her to learn more.

OSKIA was born from veterinary science. How?

Some of the most successful medical and cosmetic ingredients have come from the veterinary world. I was introduced to an equine joint supplement called MSM to repair my knees after an injury over 30 years ago. Its impact on my joints, and unexpectedly, my skin, was astonishing. It ignited a lifelong obsession with nutritional science and its transformative effects on skin health.

FLYING THE BRITISH FLAG FOR 15 YEARS

INSIDE OSKIA SKINCARE WITH FOUNDER GEORGIE CLEEVE

You’ve won over 230 awards. What makes you most proud?

We are exceptionally proud of our awards. For our work to be recognised by our peers, is the most wonderful feeling. But I feel most proud when clinical test results exceed expectations - like our CityLife Booster, which protects against 98% of free radicals and 97% of pollution. That said, nothing compares to hearing from customers whose skin, and confidence, has been truly transformed by our products.

OSKIA is known for indulgent treatments. Where can we find them?

Alongside retailers like Space NK, Harvey Nichols, and Sephora, our spa treatments are central to what we do. We believe in treating the skin and the soul. You’ll find OSKIA facials at world-class destinations like The Mandarin Oriental, Cliveden House, and Wentworth, as well as select Space NK stores.

Your go-to summer skincare tip?

Hydration, always. Our Isotonic HydraSerum bio-hacks the skin to stimulate its own hyaluronic acid production, far more effective than just superficially applying it topically, that is if you want plump skin all summer long!

PERIDOT: THE AUGUST BIRTHSTONE

WE ASKED EXPERT GEMOLOGISTS AT THEIR NOTTING HILL BOUTIQUE AT 75 LEDBURY ROAD, TO GIVE US SOME INSIGHTS INTO PERIDOT THE AUGUST BIRTHSTONE.

Why are birthstones important?

At Augustine Jewels, we love birthstones! Birthstones symbolise the month that you were born in and bring great luck and fortune to the wearer. They make a fantastic and personal present.

Where do peridot come from?

Peridot, the birthstone for August, is instantly recognisable by its fresh, olive-green glow.

Unlike most gemstones, which form in the Earth’s crust, peridot is born deep within the mantle and brought to the surface by volcanic activity— making it one of the few gems that truly feels like a gift from the Earth’s core.

What benefits does peridot bring?

Associated with warmth, protection, and positivity, peridot has been treasured since ancient times, believed to ward off bad dreams and bring peace to the wearer.

With its sunny hue and uplifting energy, peridot is a perfect reflection of late summer’s golden light and the joyful spirit of those born in August.

Where does it come from and is it strong enough to wear?

It ranks 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it quite soft, but still fine to have

in jewellery. It is most commonly found in locations such as Arizona, Myanmar, and Pakistan.

How are peridots valued?

Peridots are very much on trend at the moment and gaining in popularity, and hence their price is going up. One of the factors that define peridot’s price is colour. Specimens that demonstrate a rich olive-green color are the highest valued ones, and are more expensive than lighter stones with a predominantly yellow hue. To be valuable, the stone must also be “eye clean” with no inclusions visible to the naked eye.

What would you recommend as a present?

For a little present for a god-daughter or niece, the peridot and navy enamel stud earrings at £150 in sterling silver with gold vermeil shown in Picture 1 Top left. For a more substantive present, how about the matching peridot and navy ring in sterling silver with gold vermeil at £425 or £730 in solid gold shown in Picture 2. It is one of our best sellers! It is a really wow piece! For a present for yourself, we would recommend the solid gold Andalusian Collection statement ring £750, for a piece that lasts for generations. And for the classic present, we would recommend the, gold peridot and blue topaz cocktail ring £650 from the Andalusian Collection shown in Picture 4. The peridot represents the palm trees and the blue represents the sea in the Med. Perfect for a Summer of Love! THE ORIGINAL BIRKIN BAG IS SOLD FOR €7 MILLION:

The history of Jane Birkin’s Hermès legacy

The first Birkin bag ever created was sold in Paris for roughly £6 million. By

he first-ever Birkin bag, made for and inspired by actress Jane Birkin herself, has been sold at auction for €7 million (roughly £6 million) by Sotheby’s in Paris.

The lot began at €1 million, with advanced bids having already been placed at €1.3 million before bids went to the room at 15:18 BST.

It quickly jumped from €1.5 million to €2.4 million and €2.8 million within a minute before a fair warning was given.

Another fair warning was given at €4 million, before climbing to €6.5 million when another was given.

The bids escalated for a further eight minutes until the hammer was lowered and sold to a mystery buyer for €7 million (roughly £6 million).

The Hermès Birkin is now known to be the most coveted designer bag in the world.

The ultimate style symbol of status and social ascension – the Birkin’s growing high-profile fan club, which includes models Kate Moss and Miranda Kerr, Victoria Beckham, the KardashianJenners, Jennifer Lopez and more, helps it remain to be one of the most desired bags in the world.

The current owner, Catherine Benier, a private collector and founder of the Paris vintage boutique Les 3 Marches, announced she was selling it on 5 June.

Bernier purchased

the bag for an undisclosed sum in 2000, and even today, she declines to reveal how much she spent.

The tale of the Birkin begins in 1981, when actress Jane Birkin happened to be seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas – then artistic director of Hermès – on an Air France flight.

As she attempted to store her belongings in the overhead compartment, the contents of her now-iconic wicker basket came tumbling into Dumas’s lap. It was a serendipitous mishap that would go on to change fashion history.

Bemoaning the lack of handbags spacious enough to carry the essentials – especially while travelling with her young daughter, Charlotte – Birkin explained her frustration with the dainty designs of the day.

Ever inspired by a practical muse, Dumas and Birkin began sketching a concept on the back of a sick-bag. That drawing would become the basis for what is now arguably the world’s most coveted handbag.

By 1985, Hermès had produced a prototype and presented it to Birkin, requesting her permission to name the new style in her honour. That very first design – known as the Original Birkin – was unlike any the house would later release commercially, with subtle distinctions that set it

apart as a true one-off.

This is the bag being auctioned. It features a shoulder strap, which was never included on the commercial version, gilded brass hardware instead of the classic gold-plated and zips sourced from Éclair instead of Riri, which has manufactured Birkin zippers since the 1990s.

to a chain hanging from the base of the shoulder strap inside her bag, which is being included in the sale.

Today, prices for Birkin bags range from £15,000 to £25,000 for leather, while exotic Birkin bags are generally priced at £30,000 plus, with Himalaya Birkin bags priced over £75,000.

However, the historical significance, rarity and condition of the bag meant it was predicted to reach seven figures – but no one had predicted it to reach several million.

Birkin, who died at the age of 76 in 2023, was paid an annual royalty (around £30,000) which was then passed on to her nominated charities.

Birkins have never gone out of style – and never will – and have historically increased in value over time owing to the heritage at their core.

“Birkins have never gone out of style – and never will – and have historically increased in value over time owing to the heritage at their core”

The most exciting differentiating details, however, are undoubtedly the personalisation of the bag.

Birkin’s Original Birkin was deeply personal to her and proudly bore her initials, “J.B” embossed on the front flap.

And known for her effortlessly cool, ‘French girl’ chic style, Jane Birkin preferred a natural look over long, painted nails. So in order to keep her nails neatly trimmed on the go, she kept a nail clipper attached

And the Original Birkin represents a piece of fashion folklore – a moment where function, personality and design came together to create something truly iconic.

With its sale in Paris today, a new chapter begins for a bag that redefined what luxury means, not just in price, but in cultural impact.

Understanding Bruxism: Teeth Grinding and Clenching

Bruxism is the term for grinding or clenching your teeth, often without realising it. It can occur during the day (awake bruxism) or at night (sleep bruxism). If left untreated, it can lead to serious dental issues. Causes of bruxism vary. Common triggers include stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, or certain medications. Sleep bruxism is often linked to snoring or sleep apnoea.

Common symptoms include:

• Worn or chipped teeth

• Jaw pain or tightness, especially in the morning

• Headaches (especially around the temples)

• Tooth sensitivity

• Clicking in the jaw

• Disturbed sleep (for you or your partner)

Over time, grinding can cause permanent tooth damage, gum recession, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. Treatment and prevention start with a dental check-up. Your dentist might recommend:

• A night guard: a custom-fitted device worn during sleep

• Stress reduction: mindfulness, counselling, or relaxation techniques

• Lifestyle changes: avoiding caffeine,

smoking, and alcohol—especially before bed

• Jaw exercises to relieve muscle tension

• Referral to a specialist if underlying conditions are suspected

Conclusion

Bruxism is more than a minor annoyance—it’s a condition that can impact your teeth, jaw, and overall wellbeing. Early diagnosis and professional support are key. For more information, visit the NHS guide on teeth grinding: nhs.uk/symptoms/ teeth-grinding

Beyond Aesthetics Rhinoplasty’s functional benefits

Mr Sadri is dedicated to improving his patients nasal functioning as well as the aesthetic look of their nose. He is fastidious about ensuring he is up to date with the latest rhinoplasty techniques so that he can achieve the best possible results, and requires his patients to understand the complexity of the surgery.

A rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty is an intricate operation whereby the patients nose is broken and reset so as to improve its function. If performed correctly, this will produce a nose that not only looks good but also works well, resulting in the patient being able to breathe better. The outcome of the rhinoplasty is not about the result on the operating table, but the long term, post one year result. When performing a septorhinoplasty, Mr Sadri will need to realign the septum and remove sections that are causing obstruction to the flow of the air in the nasal passage.

Mr Sadri is one of only a handful of surgeons who perform closed rhinoplasty’s in the UK. He has worked hard to ensure he is at the forefront of nasal surgery in the UK, and brings his expertise and passion to London.

Unlike many of his colleagues, Mr Sadri enjoys performing revision rhinoplasty’s. He states that revision rhinoplasty’s are more challenging because the surgeon does not know what they will find inside the nose until the patient is on the operating table. If a patient is requiring a revision rhinoplasty it is usually because the primary rhinoplasty has is not meeting the patients functional needs. He says the most common reason patients need a revision rhinoplasty is because of the build up of scar tissue which can impact on the patients ability to breathe well, causing obstructions inside the nose.

In conclusion, Mr Sadri’s aim is to highlight the positive medical aspects of rhinoplasty surgery. Being able to breathe more easily, improving the flow of the nasal air passage which enhances oxygen intake. The positive aesthetic aspect is also an added bonus! amirsadri.com

“It has been one year since my septorhinoplasty with Dr Sadri, and I could not be happier with the results. Not only has my breathing improved, but the overall appearance of my nose now fits perfectly with the rest of my facial features. Dr Sadri truly understood what I was hoping to achieve and delivered results that look both natural and balanced. I’m incredibly grateful for his expertise and care throughout the entire process.”

Shaping the future of furniture

The shapes within our surroundings are key to the atmosphere and ambience of the home. Beyond aesthetic appeal, the contours and forms of furniture influence how we move, interact, and feel within a space. Even the subtlest shapes can enhance functionality, foster social interaction, and impact our mood. Here, we take a closer look at three shapely trends that are bringing a fresh perspective to interior design.

Soft angled sofas:

Sofa design has revolved around curves for a while now. A long while. Roundness, bends, arcs... everything’s been smooth. Well, no more – the Softly Angled sofa has entered the building. There’s no need to get your protractors out, just know that the points of these sofas are low key, the joins wide. Loose. Languid. L-shapes have relaxed, corners are calmer, and forms less

rigid. The designs have the feel of casually- carved rock, of being eroded by the elements – a balance of structure and gentleness, high architecture meeting sink-into-me squishiness.

Soft Angled sofas feel like the result of several recent trends in one. Roundness and curves. The organic. Asymmetry. The widening of sofa options. Do they come across as a compromise? Quite the opposite, they’re like the final creation after years of experimenting and testing. Eureka! To live with they’re simple, humble, and gently alluring, fitting into a room easily, working with all other shapes and

“How to work a Softly Angled sofa? Contrast against its geometry by pairing it with tactile elements like cushions”

bringing comfort without fuss or drama.

How to work a Softly Angled sofa? Contrast against its geometry by pairing it with tactile elements like cushions and throws to balance things out, and furnishings that have either clean, straight lines or out-there curves for contrast and visual interest. Keep the surrounding decor minimal to let the sofa’s distinctiveness be the star of the show – make sure to position it somewhere it can be ooh and ahh’d over – and revel in a design rarity; something that’s bold and attention-grabbing, but never ostentatious.

Breaking the surface:

There’s been a furniture design breakthrough. Quite literally. It’s the table legs – they’ve rebelled. Sick of being resigned to the shadowy underside of the table, many pieces are seeing the leg tops push through the table surface so they can really be involved in dinner and conversation. Along with adding and unusual kind of decoration, and often bringing a different type of material more into the eye line, it makes for a great game of furniture peek-a-boo. It feels fun. Mischievous. Like it’s breaking some kind of this-belongs-here, this-belongshere kind of rule, and honestly, we’re in the mood for some more boundary breaking. The look is raw and playful, a wry smirk at convention while also delivering a moment of surprise at the dinner table, and makes the space all the more alive.

“A micro trend though it may be, concave forms on interiors objects are captivating for their subtle depth and allure”

Concave curves:

A micro trend though it may be, concave forms on interiors objects are captivating for their subtle depth and allure. They beckon the eye with in, creating volume and a play of light and shade, adding both softness and forming a striking edge at the front to balance elegance with strong architectural presence.

Concave forms are a contrast to the outwardly rounded shapes that have dominated for a while. These curves pull you forward, creating the impression of shelter with their chiselled sense of dimensionality. It’s a design feature that’s classic and instantly recognisable, as well as comforting and unexpectedly dramatic.

When bringing the concave into the home, think about teaming it with flatter surfaces and straight lines to really let those inward undulations pop, and allow the scooped-out elements to serve as focal points. Keep the surrounding palette clean and minimal to highlight their prominent structural character, and ensure the contours stand out without competing with anything else in the room.

WHEN ACCESSIBILITY MEETS LUXURY

With bathroom design specialist Ripples

When designing a bathroom for individuals who need extra support, whether due to age, mobility challenges, or a disability, the thought of functional additions like grab rails or shower seating might conjure images of clinical, institutional spaces. But at Ripples we believe accessibility and luxury can, and should, coexist beautifully. Creating a bathroom that accommodates everyone in the household doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Instead, it’s an opportunity to merge thoughtful design with elegance. Here, senior designer, Faye from Ripples Bournemouth explains the best way to create a space that not only serves practical needs but also reflects your personal aesthetic.

DESIGN WITH FUNCTIONALITY AND ELEGANCE

The key to designing an accessible bathroom is choosing products that offer both style and substance. Modern grab rails, for instance, are available in sleek chrome, matte black, or brushed brass finishes, among others, and can therefore blend effortlessly into a contemporary scheme. Paired with coordinating taps and fixtures, they become a seamless part of your bathroom’s design story rather than a standout feature. Likewise, shower seating has evolved far beyond the standard white plastic chair. Consider a built-in bench clad in luxurious tiles or a stylish folding seat in warm wood tones, adding both function and a spa-like feel to your shower.

CLEVER LAYOUTS THAT PRIORITISE COMFORT

A well-planned layout is essential to ensure your bathroom feels spacious and easy to navigate. Walk-in showers with low or level thresholds eliminate barriers, creating a streamlined look while enhancing accessibility. Wall-mounted vanity units not only provide the necessary clearance for wheelchair users but also add a sense of modernity and airiness to the space.

LUXURIOUS TOUCHES MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

To keep the atmosphere far from clinical, layer in elements of luxury. Statement tiles, soft lighting, and high quality finishes can elevate your accessible bathroom into a sanctuary. Adding features such as underfloor heating, a rainfall shower, or a heated towel rail ensures comfort is never compromised. DESIGNED FOR LIFE An accessible bathroom isn’t just a solution for today – it’s an investment in the future. By designing with both practicality and elegance in mind, you can create a space that evolves with your needs while remaining a pleasure to use and admire. At Ripples, we specialise in bespoke bathroom designs that prioritise individuality, functionality, and beauty. Contact us to explore how we can help you craft a bathroom that meets your needs without compromising on style.

FROM DATED TO DREAMY

Bathroom Renovation Case Study

Adated and undersized bathroom in a 1940s semidetached home in Winchmore Hill has undergone a remarkable transformation, culminating in a luxurious, hotel-inspired sanctuary. At the heart of this stunning renovation, a Matki EauZone Shower stands out as the undisputed show-stopping centrepiece.

Homeowners Helen Cathcart (44), an interior photographer, and Chris Mason (50), along with their son Freddie (6), faced a common dilemma: a tiny, 40- year-old bathroom with yellow tiles, brown carpet, weak water pressure, and an impractical shower-over-bath setup. “Climbing into the bath to have a shower in front of the

window, with barely any water pressure, was a daily struggle,” recalls Helen.

The solution was a bold architectural rethink. After exploring various layouts, their builder proposed an ingenious room swap: converting Freddie’s larger bedroom into the new family bathroom. This pivotal decision allowed for the creation of a truly spacious and luxurious showering area.

Helen’s vision for the new space was “hotel luxury, traditional with a modern twist.” Inspired by her work photographing high-end interiors, she envisioned a serene green bathroom with a classic black and white floor and warm brass accents. A freestanding bath

was a must, but the shower needed to be powerful and luxuriously expansive.

The Matki EauZone shower door was the perfect fit. Chris had previously disliked open showers due to water splashing, making a highquality, enclosed solution essential.

“I found it really difficult to find nice shower doors until I discovered Matki!” Helen explains. The chosen Matki EauZone Hinge Door (1100mm width, Polished Gold finish) features 10mm solid safety glass, pure brass frames, a stylish curved handle, and non-slip hinges, all beautifully matching the new polished gold brassware throughout the room. Its flush-to- floor design eliminated the need for a tiled step, contributing to the sleek, luxurious feel.

“It’s actually really nice to feel enclosed in there,” Helen adds.

“Despite the hidden tray and brass drainage slot adding unexpected costs, the result is a truly amazing, spacious, and luxurious shower.”

Complementing the Matki centrepiece, the bathroom features subtle black and white marble checkerboard floor tiles from Mandarin Stone, and stunning green Ca’ Pietra Zellige wall tiles, applied halfway up the walls for a less overwhelming effect. Underfloor heating provides an extra touch of “grown- up” luxury, while polished gold brassware, a preference cultivated by Helen’s work in luxury hotels, adds warmth and opulence.

“Complementing the Matki centrepiece, the bathroom features subtle black and white marble checkerboard floor tiles from Mandarin Stone”

The project, which included the Matki shower screen, BC Designs bath and brassware, tiling, plumbing, and building works, totalled £34,000. Thanks to a highly recommended builder, the renovation was completed on time and within budget.

Helen’s advice for others embarking on a bathroom renovation: “It is a big expense, so know where to compromise. Think about storage – you need to hide ugly things! And it’s worth paying the extra for good water pressure; you shower every day, enjoy it!” This case study perfectly illustrates how strategic design and premium products like the Matki EauZone shower door can transform a functional space into a personal haven.

DAVONPORT KITCHENS

For three decades, family-owned Davonport has been quietly crafting some of Britain’s most admired kitchens from its 20,000 sq ft workshop in Colchester. Founder and master cabinet-maker Richard Davonport learned his craft at his father Aubrey’s knee, and that generational passion for wood still resonates in every commission that leaves the workshop today. From Suffolk farmhouses to London townhouses, discerning homeowners seek out Davonport for furniture that carries a maker’s name and a mark of uncompromising quality.

Every Davonport kitchen is entirely bespoke. Whether you are drawn to the timeless English detailing of their classic collections or the confident lines of a contemporary scheme, each cabinet is built by hand using traditional methods such as mortise-and-tenon and dovetail joints, then finished with the discreet Davonport seal of authenticity. That rigorous approach earned the firm the British Design & Manufacturing Award and allows it to offer a lifetime guarantee on every fitted cabinet. Thoughtful touches like hidden charging drawers, pantry cupboards and framed bi-fold breakfast stations speak to modern lifestyles without sacrificing elegance. Design, production and finishing all happen under one roof, giving clients a seamless journey from initial ideas to flawless installation. Experienced designers take time to understand not just how you cook, but how you live, from entertaining friends, overseeing homework or unwinding with a glass of wine. Luxury today must also be responsible, and Davonport’s environmental credentials are genuinely progressive. FSC- and PEFC-certified timbers are standard, water-based paints keep VOCs low, off-cuts feed a carbon-neutral biomass boiler, and a rooftop solar array now generates enough electricity to power the showroom, offices and more than half of the factory.
