Workplace woes

Making a claim against your employer is never easy, especially if you’re already feeling marginalised or anxious about the possible fallout. Before taking that first step, Jo Davis, employment partner at B P Collins outlines key things to consider to make the journey clearer and hopefully less stressful.

Understand what your issue is Take some time to think about your claim. Are you being bullied, discriminated against, harassed by another staff member or perhaps your boss has breached your contract? You are not alone. New research has found that women are almost twice as likely as men to report

discrimination and one in seven UK adults with parental or caring responsibilities feel they have faced discrimination because of their family status. Once you’re clear about the nature of your claim, ask yourself what outcome you’re hoping for. Do you want an apology or something more formal like compensation?

Keep a record

Documentation is essential. Keep a private, dated log of incidents detailing what happened, when, who was involved and any witnesses. Save all relevant emails, texts or screenshots. This evidence may be invaluable later and can offer reassurance that what you experienced is real, especially when self-doubt creeps in, as it can often do.

It’s important to note that making covert recordings will undermine your legal position and, in most instances, constitutes workplace misconduct, so this should be avoided.

Check your employee handbook

Most employers have grievance procedures which are often found in the staff handbook. Read them carefully as they’ll outline how to raise your complaint formally and what timescales are involved. Following the procedure can protect you if things escalate legally later.

Recognise the risks but know your rights

Making a claim can lead to tension in the workplace. While the law protects employees from victimisation for raising concerns, a backlash can still happen. If you’re worried, it’s vital to seek legal advice early.

Get support from friends and family

Workplace conflict can take a toll on your mental health. Talk to a trusted friend, family member or counsellor. You don’t need to do this alone.

Know the deadlines

If you’re feeling stressed, it’s okay to take a little time to prepare. However, don’t wait too long as there are legal time limits for making claims in Employment Tribunals – typically three months minus one day for most claims, or six months minus 1 day for statutory redundancy pay claims or equal pay claims amongst others.

It takes courage to make a claim against your employer. Gather the evidence, take one step at a time, and remember that there is help out there.

If you’d like to speak to Jo Davis, a highly experienced partner from B P Collins’ employment team about your grievance, please call 01753 889995 or email enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk.

A pub that goes beyond the ordinary

The Crown in Penn, where countryside retreat meets modern hospitality

Nestled in the picturesque village of Penn is The Crown, a local pub that is commanding attention for its refreshing take on the contemporary British pub. Just a 15-minute drive from the bustling market town of High Wycombe, and located in the rolling Chiltern Hills, The Crown’s considered interiors, innovative menu and community-feel have quietly been making it the destination of choice, for those in the know.

Blending its historic charm with design-led interiors, restored original features such as open fireplaces, exposed wooden beams and red-quarry tiles, sit alongside modern additions to create a setting that is as stylish as it is welcoming.

Outside, the pub’s landscaped garden, which offers unrestricted views over the local woodland and countryside, has been thoughtfully designed to allow for all-year enjoyment. A garden bar provides

outdoor service for drinks that can be enjoyed in the open green space, while secluded seating, heaters, and blankets offer an all-weather draw for guests wanting to dine al fresco.

From the moment that you walk through the door, The Crown’s delivery of an enjoyable and personable experience is evident. Brought to life by the friendly team, their passion for customer service is only matched by their enthusiasm for the pub’s incredible food and drinks.

With a focus on great social food, the menu has been designed to take guests through from brunch to supper, including a range of pub snacks and small sharing plates through to homely Sunday roasts with all the trimmings. There’s also the popular Prix-Fixe menu, which runs Monday to Thursday, offering two or three courses from just £18.

Curated by The Crown’s chefs, the menu is where both inventive and comforting dishes converge,

“From the moment that you walk through the door, The Crown’s delivery of an enjoyable and personable experience is evident, brought to life by the friendly team”

with elevated classics sitting alongside seasonal specials. Proudly working alongside established producers such as award-winning butchers, Turner & George, the team have re-defined the pub dining experience, delivering innovative dishes that use the highest-quality ingredients and are bursting with seasonal flavours.

Rooted in British seasonality, guests can expect dishes such as, haddock & chips, served with mushy peas and curry ketchup, Turner & George dry-aged burger with smoked Emmenthal and Lobster Thermidor sourdough crumpet, served with pink grapefruit, caper and herb salad. Vegan and glutenfree options are available at any time of the day.

Placing as much care and emphasis on its extensive drinks menu as it does its food offering, The Crown’s brand-new bar is the heart and soul of the pub.

Championing craft and cask ales, a rotating selection of seasonal guest brews from local Buckinghamshire breweries such as Rebellion and Chiltern, sit alongside The Crown’s core ale, lager, and beer range. Classic and signature cocktails are seasonally refreshed using the house selection of premium spirits, think smoky negronis to fiery margaritas, while non-alcoholic and soft drink options, including a range of barista-style coffees, offer refreshing alternatives throughout the day.

The pub’s sommelier-selected wine list offers both house favourites and seasonal gems, ensuring that there is something for every guest and every visit. Featuring over 48 wines from across the world, wine-lovers can try everything from dry and mineral Italian varieties to classic and complex French vintages.

More than just a pub, The Crown has been slowly building itself as a community anchor for the surrounding areas, curating a host of monthly events in collaboration with local groups, creatives, and artists. Not forgetting the pub’s VIPs (very important pooches!), The Crown is proud to be a dog-friendly pub with “muddy boots and paws always welcome”. The pub also hosts a regular ‘Sunday Dog Social’ which brings together local dog owners over a pint, while the pups enjoy supervised play and socialisation in the expansive garden.

Whether it’s a family get-together, escaping the city for a weekend break, or simply seeking a quiet pint after a long dog walk, The Crown has that welcoming, laid-back feeling that will keep you coming back for more.

From Royal Processions to Rolling Hills

After decades of loyal service in the public eye, two of the nation’s most iconic ceremonial horses have taken their final steps in uniform and begun a new life of peace and pasture at The Horse Trust. George and Elizabeth, fondly known as ER or Lizzie, have traded the grandeur of royal processions and the bustling city streets of London for the quiet, green fields of the Chiltern Hills. No longer standing to attention on parade or patrolling the capital’s busy roads, they will now spend their days surrounded by kindness, comfort, and the dignity they so richly deserve.

Elizabeth, a 17-year-old Hanoverian mare, was gifted to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 2012 to mark her Diamond Jubilee. Serving both the Royal Mews and the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch for 13 years, Lizzie brought intelligence, affection, and a dash of mischief to every role she performed. Her career took her from ceremonial duties at the Queen’s funeral and the Coronation of King Charles III to active patrols on London’s streets, where her calm presence offered reassurance in the heart of the city.

George, a 25-year-old black Hanoverian x Thoroughbred gelding, served for 16 years as a ceremonial charger to His Majesty King Charles III during his time as the Prince of Wales. A familiar figure at Trooping the Colour since 2009, he also played his part in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Her late Majesty’s funeral, and the King’s coronation. Known at the Royal Mews as “a true gentleman… always reliable and bombproof,” George even helped train younger chargers and has been immortalised as a rocking horse.

At this year’s Horses, Hounds and Heroes celebration, both horses were ceremonially retired in a moving moment as their saddles were removed for the final time, signalling the close of extraordinary careers. Now, at The Horse Trust, they will enjoy a well-earned retirement, supported entirely through public generosity.

To help provide lifelong sanctuary for retired service horses like George and Lizzie, visit www.horsetrust.org.uk/home-for-horses/

Family mediation myths

Mnediation is becoming an increasingly popular choice for families going through separation or divorce, especially for those looking to resolve matters more privately and amicably.

Partner and Head of Family & Divorce at Blaser Mills, Sadie Glover, outlines some of the common myths, and what you should and should not expect from the mediation process.

Myth 1: Mediation is only for couples who get along

In reality, many couples choose mediation because communication has broken down. The mediator is trained to manage difficult conversations and help both parties find a way forward, even where there is conflict.

Myth 2: Mediation leads to a legally binding agreement

It’s important to understand that agreements reached in mediation are not legally binding. Your solicitor will help you review any proposals and can formalise them into a consent order, making the outcome enforceable by the court.

Myth 3: Mediation is unsuitable when finances are complex

High-net-worth families often have complex assets, such as property, businesses and trusts. A good mediator will work alongside your solicitor and other advisers to help make sure everything is properly shared and understood.

Myth 4: Mediation will make me compromise too much

A good mediator will not pressure you into agreeing to something you’re uncomfortable with. The process is designed to give both parties a voice and promote fair outcomes. You remain in control and can take legal advice at any stage.

Myth 5: Mediation is just a ‘tick box’ before going to court

While mediation is a required first step before applying to court (unless exemptions apply), many families find it genuinely effective, saving time, cost, and stress, and allowing them to retain more control over their future arrangements.

Mediation can offer real advantages, particularly for clients who value privacy, discretion and flexibility. With the right legal support alongside, it can help resolve issues in a way that feels fair and dignified for everyone involved.

Britain’s most-hated tax?

Is your family facing a 40% Inheritance Tax charge? Here’s what you could do about it.

Being charged at a rate of up to 40%, Inheritance Tax (IHT) could be a significant burden for your family on death. More estates are being affected by IHT, with HMRC taking a record-breaking £8.2 billion in 2024/25. Could that figure climb even higher next year?

That’s why it’s crucial to understand how IHT works, and what you can do to help reduce the problem.

Your beneficiaries could inherit up to £1 million tax-free

Before IHT is due, you have an IHT nil-rate band (£325,000 in 2025/26). Your beneficiaries could also claim the residence nil-rate band (up to £175,000 in 2025/26) if you pass your main residence to direct descendants.

This means you can pass on up to £500,000 IHT-free. Your spouse or civil partner also inherits your entire estate tax-free, and your unused nil-rate bands. So, together, you could pass on up to £1 million free from tax.

However, if you have significant wealth, these thresholds may not go as far as you think. Plus, pensions (which are currently exempt from IHT) are set to be included in estates from April 2027, potentially increasing the possibility of a charge.

3 steps you could take to mitigate Inheritance Tax

1. Gifting wealth now. Most likely making use of a suitable trust, you can give away capital now.

2. Gifts from surplus income. Regular gifts from surplus income are not usually liable for IHT.

3. Life insurance in trust. Leaving a life insurance policy in trust provides a tax-free lump sum that your beneficiaries can use to settle an IHT bill.

We can help you plan for Inheritance Tax Mistakes in IHT planning can be costly and time-consuming. That’s why working with a financial adviser is so useful, helping you make the right decisions for your family.

At AGILITY Financial Advisers, we can design a bespoke plan that mitigates IHT, so your loved ones are the biggest beneficiaries of all your hard work.

When Families Fracture

How to Find Strength, Support, and Sound Advice

Going through a divorce or custody dispute is one of life’s most emotionally challenging experiences. At our Family Law practice, we see firsthand how isolating and overwhelming these battles can feel—not only for the client but for those closest to them.

The Role of Friends and Family

Friends and family can play a vital role in providing stability. Offer a listening ear, practical help with childcare or errands, and above all—avoid inflaming conflict. Sometimes, just being present makes all the difference.

Staying Emotionally Resilient

For clients themselves, emotional resilience is key. We encourage you to stay focused on long-term goals rather than day-to-day drama. Taking care of your physical health, limiting social media, and working with a therapist can all help you manage stress.

Legal Myths That Create Unnecessary Stress

Unfortunately, stress is often fuelled by misconceptions. One common myth is that mothers “automatically” get custody—when, in fact, courts look at the child’s best interests not outdated assumptions.

Another is that “winning” a case means punishing the other party. In reality, fair and lasting outcomes often come from compromise, not courtroom battles. Also, that everything will be split 50/50 - while fairness is the goal, outcomes in divorce financial settlements are based on individual circumstances—contributions, needs, children, and more—not a fixed formula.

How We Can Help

Our experienced Family Law Team located in the heart of Beaconsfield Old Town and Marlow prides itself on a calm, practical approach tailored to your unique situation, advocating for clarity, compassion and resolution. Turning degrees into careers

It’s a common and often frustrating situation for parents of new UK graduates. The job market is hyper-competitive, and while parents often see career coaching as a clear solution, their son or daughter may resist the help. The reasons for this reluctance are complex and often rooted in psychology.

Why graduates are sometimes reluctant to accept the need for coaching

• A Desire for Independence and Autonomy

• Graduates are at a stage in life where they are seeking to establish their own adult identity. Accepting a coach—especially one found or paid for by their parents—can feel like an admission of failure or a step backward into a dependent role. They want to prove they can succeed on their own terms.

• Perception of Coaching as Unnecessary or Irrelevant

• Many graduates believe their degree should be enough to land a job. They may feel they already have the necessary skills and are simply facing a tough market.

• A Mismatch in Communication Style

• The way a parent offers help can sometimes feel like a directive or an order, rather than a supportive suggestion. This can trigger a defensive reaction, as the young adult may feel you’re implying they aren’t capable of handling their own job search.

• Social Stigma and Pride

• There can be a sense of shame or embarrassment in admitting you need help, especially for a generation that is highly connected on social media.

How Parents Can Persuade Them

The key is to shift from a directive, problem-solving approach to a supportive, collaborative one.

• Shift from “You Need a Coach” to “Here’s a Resource.”

• Instead of presenting the idea as a personal failing, frame it as a helpful tool. Say something like, “I know the job market is really tough right now.

I’m not sure if it’s the right fit, but I thought it might be worth a look.”

• Respect Their Independence

• Emphasize that the decision is ultimately theirs. Let them know you are there to support them in any way they choose. This shows respect for their adult status and reduces the likelihood of them feeling controlled.

• Highlight the Practical Benefits

• Frame coaching not as a sign of weakness, but as a strategic advantage. You could say, “Coaches are really good at helping people get through AI-powered CV scanners and practise for video interviews.”

We help graduates every step of the way, and we are the UK’s numberone coaching company.

From The Beacon to Global Arts Festival

Beacon Boys take to the stage with Sister Act Jr. at Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Twenty-five dedicated Years 7 & 8 pupils from The Beacon School in Amersham took their talents to the international stage, performing the high-energy musical Sister Act Jr. at the world-renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the largest arts festival in the world.

Over the past academic year, the boys have worked tirelessly to bring the production to life. Supported by the school’s Performing Arts department and a dedicated costume team of mums, the cast spent countless hours learning lines, rehearsing choreography, fine-tuning musical numbers, and developing their acting skills.

The story of Sister Act Jr. follows Deloris Van Cartier, a singer who witnesses a crime committed by her boyfriend and is placed in protective custody within a convent. Despite her originally struggling to adjust to the strict lifestyle of the religious community, she eventually finds purpose and connection when she begins to lead the convent’s struggling choir.

The cast debuted their production with two performances at The Spinney Theatre at The Beacon, where the local community shows were met with great enthusiasm from parents, pupils, staff, and friends of the school. This served as the perfect send-off before the group travelled to Edinburgh the following day.

The Show Director and Head of Drama at The Beacon, Zenelle Oosthuizen, says, “The company have stepped it up every day; from flyering on the royal mile with perseverance, to delivering six sold-out performances! We are incredibly proud of these boys.”

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, held every August in Scotland’s capital, is celebrated as the largest arts festival in the world. With thousands of performances within theatre, comedy, music, dance and more taking place. The Fringe offered The Beacon Boys a unique opportunity to perform in front of a new audience performing over six consecutive days on an international stage.

Planning With Nature in Mind

Why advanced planning offers clarity, comfort — and connection to the natural world

Talking about death can feel overwhelming, but many who plan ahead describe the experience as liberating rather than morbid. Advanced planning — the thoughtful preparation of end-of-life arrangements — offers clarity and emotional peace, providing loved ones with guidance during a deeply vulnerable time. At its heart, advanced planning is an act of compassion. Increasingly, people are choosing to approach it within the embrace of nature.

Conventional & Complementary Medicine A Growing Integration

Conventional medicine, also known as Western or allopathic medicine, has long dominated healthcare systems worldwide. It relies on scientific research, pharmaceuticals, surgical procedures, and evidence-based protocols to diagnose and treat diseases.

Complementary medicine, by contrast, includes a wide array of healing practices outside the standard medical curriculum—such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, yoga, osteopathic care, and meditation. It aims to treat root cause over symptoms and focuses on prevention and lifestyle.

Though historically viewed as separate or even opposing approaches, the two are increasingly being integrated in what is now often referred to as integrative medicine.

So what is fuelling this shift?

mental aspects of health, alongside physical symptoms where that the conventional approach may not be providing adequate solutions. This holistic view of well-being is prompting medical institutions to offer services such as massage therapy, guided meditation, and energy healing within hospitals and clinics—particularly for patients dealing with chronic illness, cancer, or post-surgical recovery.

Medical education and policy are evolving in response. Some medical schools now include integrative health in their curricula, and global organisations are funding rigorous studies to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of these therapies. This helps create a more structured and evidence-based framework for their inclusion in mainstream care.

This integration is largely driven by growing scientific evidence that supports the benefits of certain complementary therapies. For instance, mindfulness practices and yoga have long been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, alleviate chronic pain, and improve cardiovascular health. Acupuncture is now acknowledged by health organisations globally for its effectiveness in managing conditions like migraines and arthritis. As the research base grows, healthcare professionals are more willing to recommend these therapies alongside conventional treatments.

Patient demand also plays a major role in this change in tide, with many people turning to complementary therapies to address the emotional and

In summary, this increasing integration of conventional and complementary medicine reflects a much-needed and long overdue transformation in healthcare. By combining the strengths of both approaches, integrative medicine helps to improve treatment outcomes, enhance patient well-being and create a more inclusive, effective healthcare system. Rather than replacing one with the other, the aim is to bring the best of both worlds together in a safe, evidence-informed way.

Seed Wellness is now working with both local NHS social prescribers & private GP surgeries including the Doctor’s Lounge in Bucks & Hertts, offering a wide range of services to help support patient care. For more information visit www.seedwellness.co.uk.

Seven reasons to choose a hardwood door

In the world of entrances, nothing makes a statement like natural hardwood. At Urban Front, our doors combine expert craftsmanship, premium materials, and timeless beauty. Though myths still surround hardwood, the truth is: a well-made hardwood door offers exceptional performance, longevity, and a warmth no synthetic alternative can match.

Aesthetics

The beauty of wood is unmatched — aluminium or engineered imitations can’t compete. Opulent, warm, and rich in texture, natural wood is elegant and timeless. Every hardwood door has its own unique grain and character, making each one truly individual.

Performance

Insulation

Old timber doors once had a reputation for warping or sticking. Today’s hardwood doors, built with modern techniques — including steel reinforcement, high insulation, 3D hinges, and multi-point locking — perform to the highest standards. Durable hardwoods like oak and iroko can outlast most other materials, including aluminium.

Longevity

Naturally strong, wood has been proven over centuries. Britain’s oldest door, at Westminster Abbey, was made in the 1050s and still stands today. With the right care, a hardwood door will serve your home for decades.

Bespoke

Wood’s versatility allows for endless design possibilities — traditional or contemporary — tailored to suit your property perfectly.

Wood is a natural insulator, with lower thermal conductivity than steel, concrete, or masonry. Modern engineering ensures hardwood matches or exceeds aluminium and steel in energy performance.

Sustainable

Responsibly sourced timber is renewable, biodegradable, and carbon-positive. We plant two trees for every hardwood door we make, each offsetting up to one tonne of CO₂.

Low Maintenance

With simple care — and smart positioning such as a porch, overhang, or shaded location — a hardwood door requires minimal upkeep and will retain its beauty for decades.

Thanks to thoughtfully considered layouts and energy-efficient features, these pools are as intelligent as they are elegant. They’re not just a place to swim, but a space that enhances daily life: a quiet hour before work, a post-school dip with the children or a weekend gathering with friends. The Signature Range turns everyday moments into something exceptional.

An Investment in Simplicity

At a time when choice can feel overwhelming, simplicity becomes a luxury in itself. The Signature Range is a solution for clients who want to invest in quality, without entering the complexity of a full bespoke build. It’s an opportunity to own a beautifully designed indoor pool, crafted by one of the UK’s most trusted specialists, with fewer decisions and faster delivery.

More than that, it’s a long-term investment in your home, your health and your family’s lifestyle. A well-designed indoor pool adds not just value to your property, but joy to your everyday, year after year.

Why Is Picture Framing So Expensive?

If you’ve ever had something professionally framed, you might have experienced a little shock. But behind that price tag is far more than a bit of wood and glass, it’s a combination of skill, craftsmanship, and quality materials designed to make your piece look its best and last for decades. Here are seven key reasons why quality picture framing costs what it does.

1. It’s a craft, not a product

Every bespoke frame is made to measure. Skilled framers cut, join, and finish each element by hand, tailoring the design to your artwork or object. It’s not a one-size-fits-all process, it’s craftsmanship.

2. Custom and conservation materials

Professional framers use acid-free mountboards, high-grade hardwood mouldings, and specialist glazing to protect your work from fading, moisture, and damage. These materials are built to last, and they cost more than mass-produced alternatives.

3. Tools and technologies

From precision mount cutters to underpinners and glass-cutting tables, the equipment needed for high-quality framing is highly specialised, expensive to maintain, and essential for perfect results.

4. Skilled labour time

A complex framing job can take hours. Conservation-grade work, multi-aperture mounts, or object framing all require patience, accuracy, and meticulous handling.

5. Design expertise

Framers aren’t just technicians; they’re design consultants. They choose proportions, colours, and finishes that enhance your piece while complementing its surroundings. That expertise is part of the value.

6. The forever factor

A professionally framed piece should only need to be framed once in its lifetime without any issues. That’s why we offer a lifetime guarantee on all of our frames.

7. Beyond the frame

The cost also reflects behind-the-scenes work, sourcing materials, ordering specialist supplies, Training of staff, storage and safely handling everything from delicate textiles to valuable art.

Picture framing isn’t about just sticking it in any frame, it’s about presenting it beautifully, protecting it for years to come, and creating a piece you’ll be proud to display forever. When you see the work, skill, and care that go into each frame, the price begins to make perfect sense. If you have an item that requires bespoke picture framing, don’t hesitate to reach out or visit our showroom in High Wycombe.

Shaping the future of furniture

The shapes within our surroundings are key to the atmosphere and ambience of the home. Beyond aesthetic appeal, the contours and forms of furniture influence how we move, interact, and feel within a space. Even the subtlest shapes can enhance functionality, foster social interaction, and impact our mood. Here, we take a closer look at three shapely trends that are bringing a fresh perspective to interior design.

SOFT ANGLED SOFAS:

Sofa design has revolved around curves for a while now. A long while. Roundness, bends, arcs... everything’s been smooth. Well, no more – the Softly Angled sofa has entered the building. There’s no need to get your protractors out, just know that the points of these sofas are low key, the joins wide. Loose. Languid. L-shapes have

relaxed, corners are calmer, and forms less rigid. The designs have the feel of casually- carved rock, of being eroded by the elements – a balance of structure and gentleness, high architecture meeting sink-into-me squishiness.

Soft Angled sofas feel like the result of several recent trends in one. Roundness and curves. The organic. Asymmetry. The widening of sofa options. Do they come across as a compromise? Quite the opposite, they’re like the final creation after years of experimenting and testing. Eureka! To live with they’re simple, humble, and gently alluring, fitting into a room easily, working with all other shapes and bringing comfort without fuss or drama.

How to work a Softly Angled sofa? Contrast against its geometry by pairing it with tactile elements like cushions and throws to balance things out, and furnishings that have either clean, straight lines or out-there curves for contrast

“How to work a Softly Angled sofa? Contrast against its geometry by pairing it with tactile elements like cushions”

and visual interest. Keep the surrounding decor minimal to let the sofa’s distinctiveness be the star of the show – make sure to position it somewhere it can be ooh and ahh’d over – and revel in a design rarity; something that’s bold and attentiongrabbing, but never ostentatious.

BREAKING THE SURFACE:

There’s been a furniture design breakthrough. Quite literally. It’s the table legs – they’ve rebelled. Sick of being resigned to the shadowy underside of the table, many pieces are seeing the leg tops push through the table surface so they can really be involved in dinner and conversation. Along with adding and unusual kind of decoration, and often bringing a different type of material more into the eye line, it makes for a great game of furniture peek-a-boo.

It feels fun. Mischievous. Like it’s breaking some kind of this-belongs-here, this-belongs- here kind of rule, and honestly, we’re in the mood for some more boundary breaking. The look is raw and playful, a wry smirk at convention while also delivering a moment of surprise at the dinner table, and makes the space all the more alive.

CONCAVE CURVES:

A micro trend though it may be, concave forms on interiors objects are captivating for their subtle depth and allure. They beckon the eye with in, creating volume and a play of light and shade, adding both softness and forming a striking edge at the front to balance elegance with strong architectural presence.

Concave forms are a contrast to the outwardly

rounded shapes that have dominated for a while. These curves pull you forward, creating the impression of shelter with their chiselled sense of dimensionality. It’s a design feature that’s classic and instantly recognisable, as well as comforting and unexpectedly dramatic.

When bringing the concave into the home, think about teaming it with flatter surfaces and straight lines to really let those inward undulations pop, and allow the scooped-out elements to serve as focal points. Keep the surrounding palette clean and minimal to highlight their prominent structural character, and ensure the contours stand out without competing with anything else in the room. chaplins.co.uk

Palais et Château

Sales of natural wooden products at French Bedroom have risen by 34%, confirming what tastemakers already know: the unfinished and authentic beauty of Châteaucore is firmly back in style.

As the V&A prepares to unveil the exhibition: ‘Marie Antoinette Style’ this September, French Bedroom celebrates the enduring allure of castles and palaces through the romantic lens of Châteaucore - a revival of French aristocratic elegance that continues to inspire modern interiors. With velvet upholstery, gilded trims, and rococo silhouettes, the collection channels Versailles-level opulence in a way that feels both nostalgic and relevant.

Fittingly, Marie Antoinette remains an icon of this aesthetic, though often misunderstood. The phrase “Let them eat cake”, long misattributed to her, was never uttered by the queen herself but has endured as a symbol of perceived extravagance and detachment. In reality, her legacy is far more nuanced, echoing the same tension that Châteaucore plays with today: a love for refinement and beauty, tempered by a yearning for authenticity.

While modern design embraces clean lines and minimalism, Châteaucore offers its own form of refinement that is rich in detail, emotionally expressive, and entirely curated. Georgia Metcalfe, Founder and Creative Director at French Bedroom, says: “The key is to keep it relaxed, ensuring a good balance of antique, vintage, and new. Fresh bed linen and soft furnishings coupled with vintage accessories is how we are styling Châteaucore.”

Although these styles may seem worlds apart, both share a devotion to craftsmanship, atmosphere, and thoughtful design. In contemporary interiors, an elegant chandelier

such as our La Petite Chambery 6-Arm French Chandelier, or the intricately carved Glorious Gilt Mirror, becomes more than decoration—it becomes a story, a memory, a mood. Châteaucore does not reject the modern. It softens it, adding a sense of beauty that is deeply personal and poetically lived. frenchbedroom.co.uk

How to pick kitchen tiles for functionality & style

Your kitchen isn’t just the heart of the home – it’s also a hardworking space where style and durability go hand in hand. So, choosing the right kitchen tiles can enhance both the look and functionality of this essential room, whether you’re planning a full renovation or simply refreshing your backsplash.

Form meets function

Kitchen tiles need to withstand heat, spills, stains, and constant cleaning – all while complementing your design vision. Wall tiles tend to be lighter, thinner, and easier to install, making them perfect for splash zones and feature walls. Floor tiles, on the other hand, must be tough enough to handle heavy foot traffic, accidental spills and everyday wear.

Material matters

Ceramic tiles remain a favourite for walls and backsplashes thanks to their affordability, versatility, and ease of cleaning. Porcelain, which is more dense and more durable, excels in high-traffic or moistureprone areas, making it ideal for floors. Natural stone tiles, such as marble or limestone, offer timeless beauty but require sealing and extra care, while glass tiles bring light-enhancing sparkle to contemporary schemes.

Size & style

You can transform a kitchen’s appearance with the right tile size. Small format options, like subway or mosaic tiles, add charm and intricate detail, while large format designs create a seamless, modern look with minimal grout lines. Wood-effect planks and terrazzo-inspired finishes are also on-trend choices that blend beauty with practicality.

“Choosing the right kitchen tiles can enhance both the look and functionality of this essential room, whether you’re planning a full renovation or simply refreshing your backsplash”

Colour & impact

Classic white remains a timeless go-to, brightening spaces and pairing effortlessly with any cabinetry. For drama however, try jewel-toned tiles; for warmth, choose earthy neutrals or sage greens. Bold patterns and textured finishes can turn your splashback into a striking focal point.

Installation & care

Professional fitting ensures level, waterproof and long-lasting results, though a skilled DIYer can manage a simple layout. Maintenance is straightforward: wipe with a damp cloth daily, use neutral cleaners weekly, and reseal grout or natural stone as recommended.

From handcrafted Zellige wall tiles to durable porcelain floor designs, today’s kitchen tile choices offer endless ways to combine performance with personality – ensuring your kitchen looks stunning while standing up to everything daily life throws at it.
