t Albans’ award-winning jewellery business, Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery, based on Chequer Street, has announced two major milestones: a transition to employee ownership and the appointment of a new Managing Director. This announcement is especially meaningful for founder Harriet Kelsall, who was born and raised in St Albans. She attended St Albans High School, and her family are well known in the local community where her father served as a local doctor and her mother worked at St Albans Cathedral.

Tucked away in the Hertfordshire countryside, The Grove has long been known for offering more than your typical country house retreat. But this summer, the estate’s Walled Garden has undergone a transformation and it’s fast becoming one of the season’s most talkedabout escapes.

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

Beryl Cook O.B.E Exhibition “Birthday Surprises”

Beryl Cook O.B.E specialised in portraying larger-than-life characters having a good time and acting without self-consciousness – a trait which she envied in others.

Born in Surrey in 1926, Cook, one of four sisters, left school at the age of 14 and worked in a number of jobs before becoming a showgirl in a 1943 touring production of The Gypsy Princess.

She also worked briefly in the fashion industry – a move she credited with inspiring her subsequent interest in observing how people dressed.

While the family were living in Africa in the 1950s, Cook first tried her hand at painting. She later said: “I’d bought John a child’s art set and one afternoon we sat down together to paint. I painted a woman, and the picture, “Hangover”, now hangs at the top of the stairs.” It became an addiction, and she would paint on any available surface, from scraps of wood to, most famously, a breadboard.

“Sabotage” Painted on a Bread Board

Cook loved to visit the pubs of Plymouth and would discreetly sketch potential subjects on cards, then spend weeks refining her compositions.

“I’m only motivated to paint by people enjoying themselves.

I wouldn’t dream of painting something sad. I hope my pictures convey some of the pleasure, amazement and delight I feel in activities going on around me”.

Cook herself was extremely shy, she shunned the limelight, never attended her gallery openings and did not attend Buckingham Palace to receive her OBE in 1995, a smaller private event was held in Plymouth, where she and her family lived.

Asked why so many overweight ladies appeared in her work, she said:

“The women I paint are fat partly because I like them like that and partly because the bigger they are the less background there is to fill in. That’s my deep and meaningful reason.”

Troll Takeover at Whipsnade Zoo

12 larger-than-life trolls arrive at UK’s largest Zoo for the summer. Trolls: A Field Study, until 22 September

Twelve towering trolls, constructed entirely from recycled materials including wooden pallets, fallen branches, and twigs, by Danish artist and activist Thomas Dambo, have arrived at Whipsnade Zoo.

Visiting Bedfordshire for this exhibition world premiere, each troll, ranging in height from 1.5metres (5ft) to almost three metres (9ft), has a distinctive pose and facial expression to match their playful personality. Nestled amongst Whipsnade’s wildlife, the trolls are at Whipsnade to conduct a study on the conservation Zoo’s human visitors, but every troll on the trail is ready to be prodded, sniffed and interacted with too.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the conservation zoo’s aquarium, home to some of the rarest and most critically endangered fish on the planet, young visitors will be delighted by 8-foottall Hasse pulling a cheeky pose, inviting them to view nature from a different angle.

Birch, stationed by the giraffe house with a measuring stick, observed the zoo’s pair of alpacas, Ica and Lima, on their morning stroll.

Meanwhile, over by the lions’ expansive habitat, kids will have to evade Lilnut’s looming net as she searches for subjects to study, and reminds them to

slow down and take in the nature around them.

Sam Viner, Learning Manager at Whipsnade Zoo, said: “As the UK’s largest zoo, Whipsnade is a place where nature and wildlife come together, where kids and grown-ups alike can have fun, explore, and learn together.”

“These impressive trolls are not only an exciting new arrival at Whipsnade Zoo, but a thoughtprovoking prompt for us all to stop and reflect on humankind’s relationship with wildlife.”

“We know that spending time outside in nature is proven to be great for mental wellbeing, as well as boosting your ability to learn and retain information – and we hope these trolls will help inspire our visitors to pay more attention to the wonders of wildlife all around them, when they’re at the zoo and at home.”

Staying until the autumn equinox (Monday 22 September), the twelve trolls are calling on young humans to bring their adults to the UK’s largest zoo to assist them with a very special field study. Grab a Trolls Treasure Hunt Map and seek them out, while completing nature-themed crafts and tasks to reconnect with the wonders of the natural world along the way.

Edward Bawden Printmaker

Free exhibition now open at The Higgins Bedford

Bedford Borough Council has announced the opening of a new free exhibition celebrating the extraordinary printmaking legacy of Edward Bawden, one of England’s most revered artists and printmakers. The exhibition, titled ‘Edward Bawden Printmaker’ runs until April 2026 at The Higgins Bedford, home to the Edward Bawden Archive.

Edward Bawden (1903–1989) was renowned for his mastery of linocut printmaking, a ‘humble’ medium he transformed into a sophisticated art form. From his early experiments as a student at the Royal College of Art to his monumental linocuts of the 1960s, Bawden earned the title of “Master of the Linocut”. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into his skill and creative process through a selection of prints from the archive he generously donated to Bedford Borough in the 1980s, alongside newly acquired lino blocks gifted by his family that have never been publicly displayed before.

Linocut printmaking, invented in Britain in the 1860s as a floor covering, was embraced by Bawden for its softness and versatility, allowing cuts in any direction without grain restrictions. Bawden described lino as a “designer’s medium… this humble material, so soft and characterless, can really offer features that are unique.” His work includes striking depictions of places such as Kew Gardens, Brighton Pier, and London markets, showcasing bold, graphic designs that push the creative possibilities of the medium.

The Higgins Bedford houses over a thousand

pieces from Bawden’s diverse body of work, including prints, watercolours, ceramics, murals, posters, and book illustrations. Bawden himself expressed his wish for his life’s work to remain together in Bedford, stating, “I must say I should feel immensely happy if I could be allowed to leave my remains to Bedford.”

Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Customer Experience, Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council, said, “We are delighted to present this exceptional exhibition that honours Edward Bawden’s remarkable contribution to printmaking and the arts.

“The Higgins Bedford is privileged to be the custodian of his archive, and this exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the creative genius behind his linocuts and other works. We encourage everyone to come and discover the legacy of a true master whose work continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.”

The exhibition is free to enter and runs throughout the summer of 2025. It coincides with family-friendly printmaking workshops inspired by Bawden’s techniques, providing an engaging way for young people to connect with his artistic heritage.

THE DETAILS

The Higgins Bedford is located on Castle Lane, Bedford, MK40 3XD.

Award-Winning Local Jeweller Evolves with Employee Ownership and New Managing Director

St Albans’ award-winning jewellery business, Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery, based on Chequer Street, has announced two major milestones: a transition to employee ownership and the appointment of a new Managing Director.

This announcement is especially meaningful for founder Harriet Kelsall, who was born and raised in St Albans. She attended St Albans High School, and her family are well known in the local community where her father served as a local doctor and her mother worked at St Albans Cathedral. Bringing the business to her hometown felt like a full-circle moment, where the company embrace the community she holds dear, hosting local and charity events.

Founded at Harriet’s kitchen table in 1998 in Weston, Hertfordshire, the company has grown with studios in Cambridge and Primrose Hill, their studio and open view workshop just outside Hitchin and of course St Albans. Over their 26 years, the business has become known not just for

its creativity, but for its pioneering work in ethical and sustainable jewellery practices, earning national recognition and accolades including Bespoke Jeweller and Ethical Jeweller of the Year.

As of 25th June 2025, the business has officially become an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) marking a bold and exciting new chapter. The transition means the skilled and passionate team who have helped shape each success are now key stakeholders in its future.

Founder and Executive Chair Harriet Kelsall intends to stay in the business for many years to come, combining her role there with other Non-Executive Director roles including her role at the Intellectual Property Office and the British Allied Trades Federation. Of the changes, she commented, “I’m extremely happy for this transition- it’s something I’ve been working towards for a long time. In many ways, our company has long operated in the spirit of employee ownership, with a collaborative culture and shared leadership. This move formalises our already embedded ethos.”

Coinciding with this change, Rebecca Howarth, who has been an integral part of the team for 20 years, has been appointed as the company’s new Managing Director.

She will lead the business with a collaborative approach, continuing to champion the company’s goals, employee-owned values, and commitment to creativity, ethics, and innovation. “Skewd, a pop-up restaurant with Anatolian influences, is serving a flavour-packed menu from its corner of the Walled Garden “

Everyman in the Garden. Running from 23 July to 7 September, the programme features everything from family favourites to nostalgic classics and rom-coms. Live pre-film performances add a touch of theatre to the experience, while vibrant installations by artist Yinka Ilori MBE provide a colourful visual backdrop.

For those who enjoy dining with a difference, there’s something new on the evening menu too. Skewd, a pop-up restaurant with Anatolian influences, is serving a flavour-packed menu from its corner of the Walled Garden – think lamb shish, honey-glazed goat’s cheese and mini lahmacun, all cooked over fire. A live DJ plays on Friday and Saturday evenings, adding to the sense of laid-back celebration.

Whether it’s a midweek escape, a weekend with the family, or a romantic overnight stay, the atmosphere at The Grove this summer feels deliberately unhurried and full of personality. It’s stylish without being stuffy, luxurious yet

open to everyone – whether you’re there for a spa treatment, a swim, a cinema night or just an afternoon in the sun.

In a season where we all crave a little more joy and a lot more fresh air, The Grove’s reimagined Walled Garden offers both in generous supply. And being so close to London, it’s the kind of place you can return to again and again.

Tickets now on sale for this summer at HITCHIN LAVENDER

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!

We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.

PLANTING & GROWING

Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

July & August 2025

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.

Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.

Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.

Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.

When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.

There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

“Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long”

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.

When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.

WHICH VARIETY TO PICK?

There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.

We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.

Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.

Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.

If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop.

Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared

away by their owners.

The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.

Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings.

Professional photography is allowed anytime during our general opening hours but is subject to an additional fee.

Great Institutions Never Stand Still

At a school founded over 1,000 years ago in 948, tradition and heritage matter. St Albans School is one of the oldest schools in the world, and we’re proud of our extraordinary history. But preserving a rich legacy should never be mistaken for resisting change. Traditions evolve, they always have done, and so should we.

It’s one of the many reasons why we have made the decision to extend our co-educational provision across the entire school from Year 7 through to Sixth Form, from September 2026. This wasn’t a sudden decision and has been carefully considered for some time. The aim has always been to build on the School’s strengths and move forward with confidence and ambition into an exciting future.

I firmly believe that a St Albans School education should be open to as many young people as possible. While working towards reaching a decision, we asked ourselves ‘why shouldn’t this school be open to both boys and girls from Year 7, when our Sixth Form has been co-educational for 30 years?’ Each time we asked the question, there wasn’t a compelling enough reason not to make the change. Great institutions never stand still. They can’t progress inside a static bubble. They must continue to evolve and develop. Yes, tradition is important, and it’s precisely because of the longevity of our vision and values that the time felt right to complete the co-educational journey that began over 30 years ago in 1991 when girls were first admitted to the Sixth Form.

The focus now is improving incrementally on something that is already great. The response to our announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve seen a surge in interest from prospective families, many of whom already have sons at the school. We are keen to listen to our

“The focus now is improving incrementally on something that is already great. The response to our announcement has been overwhelmingly positive”

community and prospective families about what they want to see alongside the changes, and we recently enjoyed two fantastic evenings of focus groups, where we welcomed over 50 families and their daughters. These conversations have been invaluable in helping us understand what parents and pupils are looking for as we continue to shape a first-class, inclusive experience for all.

The transition to welcoming both girls and boys into Year 7 next September 2026 is being carefully managed, with every aspect of school life under review to ensure the highest standards and the best outcomes for every child. We’re not reinventing what makes the school special - we’re building on it. Our next Open Mornings are on Saturday 20 September and Saturday 8 November 2025. If you’re considering the next step for your child’s education, we’d be delighted to welcome you and your family to show you all what makes St Albans School such a remarkable place to learn and grow. st-albans.herts.sch.uk

EXAM SEASON: Preparing for Results this Summer

As the summer months approach, students are gearing up for the long wait ahead for their exam results. Once exams are over and results day is in sight, young people will undoubtedly be feeling the pressure of what is to come, so it is important for parents and young people to try and use the build-up to results day to gain as much support and information from their school as possible. Whether that means digging deeper around careers advice, considering the questions you have about university, exploring gap year opportunities, resetting your aspirations or simply re-evaluating priorities – there is much to be gained. Trust your school and the systems they have put in place and reach out with any questions or concerns around results day as they will be best placed to reassure and advise you.

If you know what you are planning to study at A level, university or higher education, gently start preparing and reading up on the course and

background. Again, speak to the relevant subject teachers at your school to get advice on what you could be researching or looking at to get ahead. This will also help you to channel any anxieties into something more productive that will help you in the next step of your educational journey. In preparation for results day itself, my advice is to get an early night the day before. Spend some quality time as a family in the lead up to the day and take time to talk to and support each other. Eat together as a family, do things in the real world (away from screens and social media). And most importantly, on results day don’t avoid school. Go into school regardless of what your results are. Find out what time the results are released and make sure you spend time with staff and teachers to get the help and advice you need – and don’t forget to celebrate achievements too.

As parents, it’s easy to become fixated on grades. Instead, try to focus on the hard work that your child has put into their studies and keep the attention on the excitement of what is coming beyond results day. For some students, results day will not be all singing and dancing. For some there will be a change of direction, and even disappointment. But this time is also a period of reflection, so the most important advice in this case, is to come into school so that your teachers can support you. Together you can forge a plan and move forward in a productive and positive way.

Hatch is taking St Albans by Storm, Now open at Smallford Farm shop!

Hatch was established in 2013 by Chris Evans and located in the Maltings shopping centre as a specialty coffee and sandwich takeaway. The shop was very small with an open frontage with a counter, resembling a serving hatch, hence the name. At the time it was Chris and his best friend that was working there.

Speciality coffee was still in its infancy and Hatch was the first bricks and mortar business offering the new Australian style of coffee in town, slowly introducing the Flat white to the masses of St Albans paving the way for many coffee shops in the area.

After a successful first couple of years they opened the second HATCH venture on Holywell hill which expanded their offering to Brunch, which again was still in its infancy in terms of popularity.

The brunch concept worked so well for the hatch team that they ultimately decided to focus solely on this and sold the original site to Chris’s best friend who worked there from day one.

After 6 successful years on the hill Hatch is renowned known for brunch As well as their delicious smash burgers. Hatch started Consistently turning away more guests than they could accommodate and were often told but clients that they needed a bigger site.

After a successful 2 years of looking they finally found the right new site in the former honest burger restaurant in Christpoher place where they still are. With a successful and fantastic first 2 years that have evolved into what Chris calls a modern

day diner and that doesn’t mean a cheesy American themed restaurant but more a casual, affordable, relaxed place you can come to eat on your own, with a party, for an occasion or no occasion at all.

Hatch is a place that can cater for all people and all occasions, providing simple yet quality food as cheap as we possibly can. Chris told me they had no plans to open anymore sites this year as they intended to continue to grow HATCH but with that a second cafe option came up and It just become the perfect spot that they couldn’t refuse.

A farm shop and the cafe venue brought to life a dream for Chris and his team, being the fact its great for the family market and it has lots of space and free parking is a massive perk for those who don’t want to battle with the St Albans traffic. It also has the popular farm shop and access to fruit and veg grown just meters away at Glinwell. all in all a massive wine for the Hatch time and added even more success to their bows!

Hatch are open 7 days a week for walk-ins only, they have plenty of space indoors and outdoors. currently offering our brunch menu from the main site (not our burgers as the kitchen set up is different).

Also now developing new dishes specific to this site to give its own identity whilst still very much feeling like HATCH and also intend to use the space for exciting events and parties in the future.

The Fair represents over 80 of the UK’s leading dealers including Austin/Desmond Fine Art, Patrick Bourne, The Fine Art Society, Osborne Samuel, Portland Gallery, The Redfern Gallery, Alan Wheatley and Willoughby Gerrish. In 2025, the Fair welcomes back Crane Kalman, Gallery Pangolin, Huxley-Parlour, Panter & Hall, Paul Liss, The Scottish Gallery and Candida Stevens. New exhibitors include Gallery Ten, Jonathan Soden, Ottocento, Sisters Grimm, and Winsor Birch.

On show will be work by celebrated artists including Frank Auerbach, Banksy, John Craxton, Tracey Emin, Terry Frost, Barbara Hepworth, Damien Hirst, Ivon Hitchens, David Hockney, Albert Irvin, Gwen John, L.S. Lowry, Henry Moore, John Piper, Paula Rego, Bridget Riley, William Scott and many more.

The 2025 edition will see the return of SOLO CONTEMPORARY, a section curated by Zavier Ellis which puts the spotlight on some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary gallerists and artists. And following on from its successful debut last year, Digitalism, an immersive exhibition curated by Rebecca Tolley-Georgiou, presents the very best digital art being created and exhibited in Britain today.

Feature Exhibition: Unsung

Unsung, a special exhibition curated by art market journalist and British Art Fair Advisory Panel Member, Colin Gleadell, highlights Modern British artists whose oeuvres have been undervalued for years. Gleadell says “It could be argued that Modern British art in general is undervalued in comparison to its American or European counterparts, but within the Modern British market there are countless instances of artists who have been forgotten at some point or overshadowed by more successful near contemporaries.”

Charity Partner: Hospital Rooms

British Art Fair is pleased to announce a new charity partner for 2025: Hospital Rooms. Hospital Rooms work within mental health hospitals transforming clinical spaces into environments filled with colour, care and inspiration. The charity aims to raise funds at the fair through sales of a limited edition print by a major contemporary artist. For more information, visit britishartfair.co.uk

PERFECT PRINTS

The trending prints to wear instead of florals this summer

weather, but gingham can walk a fine line between being classic and twee. The trick is knowing where that line is.

“Gingham is such a timeless summer staple,” says fashion designer and podcaster Amanda Wakeley OBE, “but to keep it chic rather than childlike is pretty tough.

“Silhouettes need to be sleeker and stay away from a plethora of ruffles.” She recommends a streamlined top, balanced with grown-up accessories that elevate rather than embellish.

THE MOST FLATTERING PRINTS

The question of what is ‘flattering’ often crops up when it comes to prints.

While you should wear whichever print you feel best in, some can work better than others.

“Paisleys tend to flatter all shapes,” says Wakeley, “I’d steer clear of overly large, bold prints if you’re feeling body-conscious.

“Smaller-scale prints can create movement and elongation.”

From the bayadere stripe to Seventies print-clashing – here are the patterns to wear instead of florals this season. By Laura Owen

By now, florals are practically synonymous with summer dressing.

But like The Devil Wears Prada’s Miranda Priestly once said, florals aren’t exactly ‘groundbreaking’.

If you’re sick of wearing plain white or ditsy florals and want something less predictable –gingham, polka dots and unusual stripes are big patterns to sport this summer.

But what’s the best way to style them? British designers share their secrets on how you can revive retro prints and wear them well.

GINGHAM

This Fifties-inspired classic always returns in warm

Softer fabrics can definitely help shift the tone when it comes to gingham, as Aspiga’s founder Lucy Macnamara notes, “gingham can feel nostalgic, but the key to keeping it grown-up is all in the silhouette and styling. Look for organic cotton or linen blends in tailored shapes – shirt dresses, wrap blouses, wide-leg trousers.”

RETRO VINTAGE

Nostalgic prints are a tricky one – as they can either feel cool and timeless or totally outdated. While the Eighties has made a comeback this year, the Mario Buatta-inspired chintz hasn’t quite reentered fashion.

This season the runway has taken inspiration from the Seventies and Eighties rock scene, with animal prints in the form of snake, tiger and cow dominating collections.

“Personally, I love a striking animal print or bold retro,” says Wakeley.

“I have a soft spot for Seventies-inspired motifs – they remind me of my travels in Kenya and

Macnamara agrees, saying that “they draw the eye without overwhelming the frame. Placement is also important –prints concentrated at the hem or sleeve can be really flattering.”

“Animal print is remarkably easy to throw on and look put together”

India,” says Macnamara.

Worn as a statement piece pared with monochromes in either red, white or butter yellow, animal print is remarkably easy to throw on and look put together.

POLKA DOTS

Returning this year as a firm favourite is the polka dot. Loved by the Princess of Wales, last year this playful print dominated the high street with Pretty Woman-inspired mocha dresses.

Once reserved purely for the Sloane ranger, the polka dot has been shaking off its preppy reputation and emerging with more fashion flair, cropping up on the runways of Valentino and Moschino in Eighties-inspired cocktail dresses and Mickey Mouse-sized dots on powershouldered blazers.

“I adore them in monochrome palettes,” says Wakeley, who favours a dark navy or ivory as a base, “in either medium-sized or small dots is really sophisticated.

“[They] work particularly well printed on chiffons and lightweight fabrics which can be cut with volume and movement which adds an element of romance.”

Macnamara is drawn to understated tones too, “to keep them elegant, I prefer a smaller, scattered dot on a neutral background like cream, navy or soft chocolate,” she says. “A silk blouse or wrap dress in a mini-dot print can feel playful without being overpowering.”

If you’re looking for something more daring, the experts suggest picking fabric or colour when it comes to this print – not both – to avoid looking too gaudy.

BAYADERE AND ORGANIC STRIPES

Stripes never really go away, but this summer, they’ve loosened up.

“This season, there is a layering of different

CHILD

scales of stripes and a use of more irregular stripes,” says Wakeley. “There’s a wonderful androgyny about wearing stripes – they’re striking, eye-catching, but timeless.”

While the Nineties bayadere stripe is making a comeback, “We’re also seeing more relaxed, irregular hand-drawn stripes which I love for a more artisanal, effortless feel,” says Macnamara.

“The key is to go for colours that lift your skin tone and keep the rest of your look clean and simple.”

HOW TO PRINT CLASH

The resurgence of Seventiesstyle print clashing can be very cool, but definitely requires a certain level of conviction.

“This is a ‘more is more’ trend,” says Wakeley. “There are no rules – so have fun and just go for it.”

But if you want a slightly more strategic approach, Macnamara says “the trick is to keep the colour palette consistent.

“Soft terracotta, blush, sand […] play with scale – pair a bold, larger print with a finer, more delicate one.”

For the uninitiated, she suggests starting small: “A printed blouse with a patterned scarf or headband can be a subtle way in.”

DON’T LET KNEE PAIN DERAIL YOUR CYCLING

Whether a seasoned road-racer or a periodic “Peloton” user, there’s nothing like knee pain to derail your ride.

There are 4 main areas where pain can affect cyclists’ knees.

• Anterior (front) – most common, and typically arises from the kneecap joint, but may also be due to tendonitis, patellar compression syndrome, or fat pad impingement. To improve kneecap biomechanics and decrease the load on the kneecap joint, keep your knee pointing directly over your foot throughout the peddle stroke.

• Posterior (back) – usually a result of overextending the knee, causing hamstrings overload. Check that your saddle is not set too high or too far back. Popliteus, a tendon at the back of the knee can become inflamed if overworked when controlling rotation of the foot during the pedal stroke.

• Lateral (outside) – commonly due to compression of the ITB (a thick band of fibrous tissue that runs along the outside of your leg), secondary to weak or imbalanced muscles around the hip, poor rotation of the knee, or malpositioning of cleats – try moving the cleat to the right or left in order to relieve ITB pressure.

• Medial (inside) – can be caused by

inflammation of a tendonous structure, the pes anseurinus. Like, ITB syndrome, it may be due to poor rotational control of the knee during the pedal stroke or mal positioning of cleats.

Simple techniques that can assist with knee pain include:

• Ensuring your bike is set up correctly. Check your saddle height - at the bottom of the pedal stroke, you should have a 20-30° flex. Consider a professional bike fitting.

• Strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings and the gluteal muscles. Try to incorporate full body workouts in your training to minimise biomechanical issues.

• Ice, anti-inflammatory medication (if tolerated) and compression can help settle knee pain.

However, sometimes your knee pain may persist. Pinehill and Rivers Hospitals can offer fast and convenient access to diagnostics and treatment by experienced knee surgeons, get in touch on 01707 524 566 for more information.

What To Expect on Your First Gynaecologist Visit

Whether you’re booking a first visit to the gynaecologist out of curiosity, concern, or routine care, it’s normal to feel a bit unsure about what lies ahead. This article takes you through the process step-by-step, because being informed can help you feel more at ease.

Miss Fani Kokka, Gynaecologist/ Subspecialist in Gynaecological Oncology, who helped write this article will walk you through the process of what to expect at your first appointment.

STEP-BY-STEP: YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A GYNAECOLOGIST

From the moment you walk in, the focus is on your comfort and your health. Here’s how a typical first visit may go:

A warm welcome and form-filling You’ll be asked about your medical history, including your menstrual cycle, any surgical history, and any medications you’re taking. If you’re sexually active, you might be asked a few extra questions about your sexual health and birth control (if applicable).

“You’ll chat with the doctor in a private space. This is your opportunity to bring up any questions or concerns”

Private consultation

You’ll chat with the doctor in a private space. This is your opportunity to bring up any questions or concerns, whether it’s about irregular periods, unusual vaginal discharge, pain, or anything else to do with your reproductive health.

Examinations and tests

Depending on your age, symptoms, or reason for attending, your consultant may recommend a general physical exam, pelvic exam, or breast exam. These are common parts of looking after the female reproductive system and are done with sensitivity and privacy.

What tests might be carried out?

The doctor may recommend certain tests depending on your personal health needs. These could include:

Pelvic exam: This checks your uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It may include a bimanual exam using gloved, lubricated fingers to gently feel inside.

Pap smear (or pap test)/HPV test: This checks for changes in cervical cells that might lead to cancer. Abnormal screening results require colposcopy examination.

Sexually transmitted infection screening: If you’re sexually active, you may be offered tests for sexually transmitted infections.

Breast exam: Your consultant may check for any lumps or signs of diseases in the breasts.

Blood tests: These may be offered depending on your history or symptoms, especially for hormone levels or as part of prenatal tests.

Ultrasound or imaging: If there’s anything that needs a closer look, such as unexplained bleeding or pain, you may be referred for imaging.

Why see a gynaecologist in the first place?

There are many reasons someone might make that initial visit to a gynaecologist. Some of the most common include:

• Discussing birth control options

• Planning for pregnancy or having fertility concerns

• Investigating a family member history of gynaecological conditions

• Getting routine preventive care

When Should You Book That First Gynaecologist Appointment?

There’s no set age, but many book their first visit

in their late teens or early twenties, especially once they become sexually active, or if they have any ongoing issues like pain, bleeding, or persistent discomfort. If you’re unsure, a good rule is: if something’s affecting your day-to-day life, it’s worth checking in.

What Happens After Your Visit?

You’ll be given time to get dressed, then talk through any findings with your doctor. If you’ve had tests, you’ll be told how and when the results will come through. If treatment or follow-up is needed, your consultation may include a plan or a future appointment.

Most importantly, your first appointment is about starting an ongoing conversation about your health and giving you space to ask anything, from your last period to what’s “normal” for your reproductive system.

If you’re concerned with your gynaecological health, you can make an appointment with Miss Kokka at a time that suits you by calling the contact centre on 020 7806 4060.

St John & St Elizabeth Hospital, 60 Grove End Road, St John’s Wood, NW8 9NH

FAQS ABOUT SEEING A GYNAECOLOGIST

How should I prepare for my first gynaecology appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing, bring a list of any medications, and jot down any questions you might want to ask. It’s helpful to know when your last period started and ended.

Will it be painful?

The exams should not be painful, though you may feel some pressure. Let your doctor know if anything feels uncomfortable or causes pain— they’ll work with you to make the experience as calm as possible.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. Many people feel more at ease bringing a family member or friend.

Summer Interior Trends 2025

As summer settles in, it’s not just about holidays and sunshine, it’s about carrying that easy, feel-good energy into everyday life. This season invites us to refresh our spaces with light, warmth, and personal touches that spark joy and surprise. Even the smallest change can shift the mood, bringing a sense of connection and calm. By embracing details that feel meaningful and uplifting, we create interiors that glow with the same laid-back optimism as a golden summer evening, creating spaces that feel alive, comforting, and deeply our own.

AESTHETICS

The 70s Colour Revival

It’s been bubbling away for a while, but this summer is when the interior’s 70s Colour Revival will hit our homes in the most chic, modern way yet. Think mustard yellow, olive green,

aubergine purple and brick red, layered in rich, tactile harmony. It’s not about a single pop of colour, but a full-on palette that nods to discoera nostalgia: record players, soft lighting, and bohemian charm. When woven together, these retro shades don’t just bring warmth, they tell a story. One of freedom, personality, and interiors that feel both lived-in and loved.

Italian Riviera

This summer, channel the charm of the Italian Riviera, whether you’re in Portofino or on your patio. To decoratively embody the essence of the

Desert Sundown

We’re galloping into the dusty sunset this summer as the Desert Sundown aesthetic takes over our living rooms and hearts. Think dusky reds, baked ochres, shadowy oranges and sun-kissed yellows, layered with natural textures like clay, honeyed wood, woven fibres and weathered leather. The look is grounded and soulful, embracing organic shapes and a sense of calm, lived-in ease. It’s a collection of colours and textures that nods to a more elemental, grounded way of living – one that embraces raw beauty and simple pleasures.

Italian Riviera, focus on summoning a light and airy atmosphere through a gentle palette inspired by the sea and sky (and a few splashes of gold or yellow to emulate the sun, for the joy factor). Blend lightly washed pastels like seafoam greens, pale corals, and muted terracotta’s with neutrals, natural materials such as timber, wicker, and linen and crisp white, and complement with understated furniture, to create rooms that are both fresh and enduring.

COLOURS

Cocoa

The natural shade of the moment? It’s dark. It’s edgy. It’s oozing with character. It’s delightfully rich – introducing Cocoa. Deliciously, decadently, darker than its forerunner Mocha Mousse, Cocoa’s chocolatey tones are unbridled and undiluted, drawn straight from the intense, velvety hues of freshly roasted cocoa beans. Cocoa invites calm, grounding your interiors with its enveloping depth. Pair it with pale linens, blonde woods, and bleached textures for contrast and balance. Whether used boldly or as an accent, this indulgent hue creates a cocooning atmosphere that soothes the senses and infuses your home with soulful sophistication.

Asparagus

Asparagus tones are sprouting up this year, filling the home with fresh grassiness as well as a tender side. Asparagus is more vibrant than sage but more placid than forest green, making it refreshing – and flexible. Use it sparingly or boldly: a solo armchair here, a scatter of accents there. Pair with raw woods, woven textures and natural finishes to

let its gentle, organic charm shine. Whether as a subtle sprig or a full patch, Asparagus adds a crisp, grounded elegance that connects your space to nature in the most refreshing way. chaplins.co.uk

Ultramarine

While Luminous Blue has been declared the Colour of 2027 by trend forecasting service WGSN, a few select brands are already ahead of the curve, dousing their designs in the almost glowing ultramarine shade which bursts with electric energy and it radiates confidence and exuberance. Ultramarine shines brightest when it appears as wisely placed bursts of colour injecting moments of ‘wow’ into a room. Opt for subtle accents – a splash here, a decorative piece over there – to make an impression without overwhelming

RUSTIC FARMHOUSE REVIVAL: Pinterest’s Top Interior Trend for 2025

From reclaimed wood to heritage charm, Claire Garner of Claire Garner Design Studio reveals how to perfect the rustic aesthetic.

How would you define the rustic farmhouse interior trend?

The rustic farmhouse interior trend is all about warmth, character and a sense of timelessness. It embraces natural textures, vintage or antique pieces and a lived-in, layered aesthetic that feels both grounded and inviting. Think lime washed walls, exposed wood beams, reclaimed materials and soft, earthy colour palettes that echo the surrounding landscape.

Why do you think this trend is becoming so prominent right now?

This trend is resonating so strongly right now because people are increasingly craving authenticity and comfort in their homes. There’s a shift towards slower living and more meaningful spaces that tell a story. Rustic farmhouse style offers a strong sense of nostalgia and connection to nature, while still feeling fresh and relevant.

How would you go about incorporating it into one’s home?

To incorporate this look at home, I’d suggest starting with natural materials and layering textures

“This trend is resonating so strongly right now because people are increasingly craving authenticity and comfort in their homes”

– think linen, wool, timber and stone. Mix old and new pieces, source vintage finds and avoid anything too polished or perfect. It’s about creating a space that feels honest and soulful, not staged or overly curated.

Can you see a particular area of the home it’s going to be most popular in? And why?

I see this trend working beautifully in any room of the home, but particularly in kitchens and living spaces. These are the rooms where family and friends gather, and the rustic farmhouse aesthetic really enhances that sense of warmth and togetherness. A shaker kitchen with aged brass hardware, open shelving with handmade pottery, or a reclaimed wood dining table would all sit perfectly within this look.

The Psychology of a Front Door

Your Home’s First Impression, Redefined

Whether bright and bold or subtle and subdued, your front door’s colour makes a powerful statement. It goes far beyond curb appeal, offering a direct clue to the personality of those inside. Every hue tells a story, here’s how to read yours.

GREY

A deep charcoal or anthracite grey door is the colour of modern strength. It creates a powerful and dramatic entrance that feels both secure and seriously stylish. This homeowner has a commanding presence and values security, discipline, and sophisticated design.

BLUE

BLACK

A black front door is the epitome of simple elegance and effortless style. It is the one colour guaranteed never to go out of fashion, providing a timeless anchor for your home’s character. This choice reflects a homeowner who appreciates classic design, sophistication, and understated confidence.

A friendly light blue door is pure optimism in a paint can. It brings a fresh, positive energy to the front of a home and promises a happy, relaxed atmosphere inside. This choice belongs to a homeowner who is sincere, easy-going, and finds joy in the simple things.

PINK

Soft pink is the new neutral for the modern home, offering warmth where grey can feel cool. It’s an unexpectedly sophisticated and chic choice that signals a keen eye for contemporary design. This choice signals a homeowner with a sophisticated eye for design and the confidence to set their own trends.

WHITE

Alongside black, white is a truly timeless choice that offers effortless charm and grace. It provides a clean and versatile accent that complements virtually any colour of brick or stonework. Ultimately, it creates a clean and classic welcome, promising a space of simple elegance and order just beyond the threshold.

YELLOW

A yellow front door is a guaranteed dose of sunshine, even on a cloudy morning. It’s a blast of pure optimism and happiness that radiates a cheerful welcome right from the kerb. This choice belongs to a homeowner with a sunny disposition who loves to share their joy with others.

RED

A red front door makes a bold and powerful statement, immediately creating a feeling of warmth and a hospitable welcome. It’s a colour that commands attention from the street, radiating vibrant energy, passion, and excitement. This choice belongs to a homeowner who is outgoing and optimistic, with a bold character that matches the strength of the colour itself.

GREEN

More than any other colour, green signals growth, ambition, and renewal. It’s a balanced and reassuring choice that suggests new beginnings and a fresh outlook on life. This homeowner is likely generous, focused on personal growth, and always improving their home and themselves.

WHAT TO CONSIDER BEYOND COLOUR

Finding the perfect shade involves more than just your personal taste. The right colour must also harmonise with your home’s unique architecture and the overall character of your street. These final considerations are the key to choosing a shade that both looks good and truly feels right.

Architecture

A colour should always work in harmony with the architectural style of your home, from traditional cottages to minimalist new builds. Look for inspiration in existing features like your brickwork or window frames to find a complementary shade that creates a cohesive look.

Environment

Consider the overall feel of your street and decide if your goal is to seamlessly blend in or to carve out your own unique space. If making a confident statement is your aim, then a bold, vibrant colour is the most direct and impactful way to showcase your home’s personality.

Direction

The very same paint colour can look dramatically different depending on the quality and direction of the natural light it receives. A north-facing door in cool, indirect light will make a shade appear darker, while a south-facing door in bright sun can make it seem much lighter and more intense.

Victorian Splendour

Porcelain Superstore reimagines classic Victoriana in two new tile collections

Interest in Victorian-inspired interiors is on the rise, according to new research from independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore.

Using data from Pinterest, Porcelain Superstore found searches for the term ‘modern Victorian interiors’ has increased 30% over the last month.

It comes as Porcelain Superstore launch two new Victorian-inspired floor tile collections for the home and garden.

Introducing Chelsea and Midlake.

Chelsea combines classic Victoriana with a 21stcentury styling.

Featuring a statement chequerboard pattern, these tiles offer the look of luxurious marble but because they are crafted from Italian porcelain, they are resistant to stains, scratches, and moisture, making them as practical as they are striking.

Chelsea is available in six colourways: White, Ivory, Green, Rosa, Red and Nero, and homeowners can mix and match to create the chequerboard of their dreams.

Alternatively, for those who want a ready-made style statement, Porcelain Superstore has created four ‘mixed’ packages, which combine Green, Rosa, Red or Nero tiles with a White for a look that never dates.

Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “The Chelsea collection is a real classic.

“It is simple but impactful, channelling timeless Victorian styling with a sprinkle of 21st-century interiors magic to create statement flooring.”

Midlake Chequerboard 2cm is a large format beauty designed for the great outdoors. It offers the same chequerboard pattern as Chelsea but is supersized for dramatic impact.

Abbas said: “Why should the home have all the fun? Midlake Chequerboard will bring statement styling to gardens and patios. It is the ultimate foundation for summer entertaining.”

Like the Chelsea Collection, Midlake is crafted from hardwearing porcelain and requires minimal maintenance to retain its stunning looks.
