Discover where the wild things are!

Wild about Hertfordshire Exhibition Opens at St Albans Museum + Gallery

Get back to nature at St Albans Museum + Gallery this spring thanks to a new exhibition Wild about Hertfordshire which opened in the Keeper’s Galleries on March 21 and runs until 06 July.

Learn about the natural history of Hertfordshire, then pick up a nature trail and get out and explore the living world around you.

The exhibition shows why Hertfordshire is a good place to discover different types of wildlife and interesting habitats. For example, it is home to 10% of the world’s 200 chalk streams, including the River Ver that flows through St Albans. It also underlines the challenges facing local wildlife from climate change, pesticides and other man-made problems. As many as 1,430 species found in Herts are of conservation concern and rated rare or threatened.

In half a century 76 species have become

extinct in the county – most recently including one of southern England’s last Tree Sparrow colonies at Tyttenhanger.

The exhibition is organised by Hertfordshire Natural History Society (HNHS) which is celebrating its 150th anniversary. Run entirely by volunteers, the Society’s special role since 1875 has

been to look for local wildlife, record sightings and publish the results.

Founded in Watford, the Society included Charles Darwin as an honorary member and the celebrated St Albans expert on insect pests, Eleanor Ormerod.

The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the Society and get more people – especially young nature enthusiasts – to engage in its enjoyable and important work.

Visitors can see a detailed 3D model of the rare River Ver chalk stream (sponsored by Affinity Water) and learn about seemingly lost Hertfordshire species, including Adders and Dormice, as well as recent arrivals live the Red Kite and Ring-necked Parakeet.

Featured flora includes the nationally rare Pasque Flower, which is Hertfordshire’s County plant, Stream Water-crowfoot, that thrives in clean chalk rivers and the beautiful Green-winged Orchid.

There is also the chance to see rare historic botany books belonging to the HNHS that date from 1479.

Curator of the exhibition David Utting has been enthusiastic about nature and particularly birds since childhood.

HNHS Secretary and St Albans resident, David said: “Hertfordshire Natural History Society is a remarkable county institution. We are excited by this opportunity to share our big birthday celebration and tell more people about our county’s wonderful wildlife. We want to inspire them – young and old – to go out and discover the natural world for themselves.

“We are most grateful to the Museum for hosting the exhibition and, of course, hope that more people will decide to join HNHS, which includes the Hertfordshire Bird Club.”

Farhana Begum, Arts, Tourism, Culture and

“We hope this exhibition will help people to think about what is right on their doorstep and encourage them to get out into the natural world”

Heritage Manager at St Albans City and District Council and Head of St Albans Museums, said: “We’re delighted to be working on this project and supporting this fantastic local society. It’s exciting to have natural history objects from our collection out on display too.

“We hope this exhibition will help people to think about what is right on their doorstep and encourage them to get out into the natural world. Not only is this great for the natural environment in Hertfordshire but it helps with our ongoing learning about it.”

A number of interactive events will run alongside the exhibition including educational activities for children which include a seed bomb and bird feeder making session on 15 and 16 April and a model bugs craft event on 29 May. HNHS Secretary David Utting will give a talk on “Discovering where the wild things are: 150 years of the Hertfordshire Natural History Society” on 14 May.

Fascinating, educational and full of the joys of spring, Wild about Hertfordshire is a FREE exhibition and runs in the Keeper’s Gallery at St Albans Museum + Gallery until 06 July 2025. stalbansmuseums.org.uk @stalbansmuseums Visit hnhs.org/how-to-join and become an active member of the society

Help select the soundtrack to Classic Ibiza’s birthday celebrations

With the outdoor concert season drawing ever closer, the organisers of Classic Ibiza at Hatfield House on Saturday 16 August have announced details of an extra-special track poll to mark its 10th birthday celebrations. This year they are asking for your help to select the tunes being performed by Urban Soul Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Hussey, and the show’s special guests, London Community Gospel Choir.

This summer’s Classic Ibiza will see Urban Soul Orchestra perform more tracks than ever before in a set that is packed full of firm audience favourites. Insomnia by Faithless, Born Slippy by Underworld and Adagio For Strings by Tiësto are among the anthemic tunes sure to be given the full orchestral treatment.

London Community Gospel Choir will bring a fresh dynamic to the first half of the show, creating a euphoric wall of sound with Urban Soul Orchestra in a performance not to be missed. The organisers have compiled a shortlist of 12 tracks in their repertoire for you to choose from that lend themselves perfectly to the addition of a gospel choir.

The shortlisted tracks are: Blackwater (Octave One); Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless) (Crystal Waters); (I Wanna Give You) Devotion (Nomad); Lola’s Theme (The Shapeshifters); Praise You (Fatboy Slim); Saltwater (Chicane); Sun Is Shining (Bob Marley vs. Funkstar De Luxe); Sunchyme

“Our annual track poll is a massive hit with our social media followers, so we want to do something extra-special to mark our 10th birthday celebrations”

Limerick, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales); Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? (Moby); and You Got the Love (The Source ft. Candi Staton).

Classic Ibiza’s Lisa Ward says: “Classic Ibiza has always been about reimaging iconic house tunes to create a unique musical experience that is truly memorable. This year we’ll be taking the show to a whole new level, with London Community Gospel Choir joining Stephen Hussey’s incredible Urban Soul Orchestra as our special guests.

“Our annual track poll is a massive hit with our social media followers, so we want to do something extra-special to mark our 10th birthday celebrations. It gives our concertgoers the chance to feel part of the creative process – a true case of playing to your audience!”

You can join Classic Ibiza’s 58,000 social media followers by placing your vote here: https://poll. forms.app/classicibiza/2025-track-poll. Voting is open until 21 April. The eight most popular tracks being added to the set will be announced shortly afterwards. Last year’s poll received over 5,000 votes.

IT’S THE MONOPOLY: ST ALBANS EDITION’S ‘BIG REVEAL’

Abrand-new official MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition - featuring the great and good of the city - is now available in shops.

The game - which sees bespoke property spaces and cards - hit the shops on 14th October last year, following a formal launch at The Odyssey Cinema.

When it was announced that St Albans is getting its own version of the world’s most popular board game, the public was invited to send in suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature in the game. Landing at

the top of the board is St Albans Cathedral. At the other end - ‘Old Kent Road, the game’s most affordable square - is the Roman Theatre. This, say the game’s makers, is on account of it being “so very old”.

“We have been spoilt with choices when putting this MONOPOLY board together,” says Ella Gibbs, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK. “We produce official MONOPOLY games based on places all over the world, including in recent years Palm Beach, Dubai, Phuket and The Hamptons. Now St Albans has joined the world’s MONOPOLY elite!”.

The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Jamie Day, says: “It is wonderful to see the historic city of St Albans celebrated as an official game of MONOPOLY”.

The MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition is available to purchase at Waterstones and WHSmith - as well as extensively online, including at Booghe. co.uk and Amazon.co.uk.

Dining at The Golden Fleece

The Golden Fleece Country pub and dining rooms is located in the picturesque village of Braughing and is owned and run by Pete and Jess Tatlow.

Bought at auction 15 years ago by the couple, they set about re-establishing to former glory the delapidated 17th century freehouse. It had previously been closed since 2001 when a former owner closed the business after a short reign, trying to get planning consent to change the building into a house – this was refused many times due to continued local opposition.

Pete and Jess were already known in Braughing, and throughout the renovations, friends and locals lent their skills and time to allow a remarkable transformation in only 4 months, with the pub re-opening on the night of the famous Braughing Wheelbarrow race, in July 2010.

It is now the perfect place to enjoy a pint of ale by one of the two log burners in the winter or a glass of chilled wine on the terrace while the children explore the play area in warmer months. It is recommended in many guides, and has won several awards for its food and atmosphere.

You’ll always receive a warm welcome whether you are just dropping by for a drink, enjoying a light lunch, delicious evening meal or celebrating a special occasion. Head Chef Jess and her team strive to keep the a la carte menu fresh and exciting, changing the menu regularly and offering a daily specials board.

“It is now the perfect place to enjoy a pint of ale by one of the two log burners in the winter or a glass of chilled wine on the terrace while the children explore the play area in warmer months”

Their Sundays roasts are ever popular, served between 12 noon to 5pm, with a selection of three meats and vegetarian options also available. The Golden Fleece is well known for catering for coeliac, gluten and dairy free diets. This is something Jess and Pete have championed over their careers. Meals can easily be adapted for other food allergy sufferers as everything is prepared to order. They also offers a separate Vegan/ vegetarian menu available.

All menus, beverages and special events (including The Golden Fleece’s popular Tapas Night on the last Wednesday of the month) can be found on their social media pages and website. goldenfleecebraughing.co.uk, 01920 823555.

A showcase for the world’s best potters returns for its 21st Year

Ceramic Art London 2025

Friday 9 – Sunday May 11, 2025, Olympia London

Europe’s premier ceramics fair, Ceramic Art London, will showcase 120 makers from around the world, with prices ranging from £50 to £10,000. Even those now based in the UK often take inspiration from distant cultures or their original homeland from such varied destinations as Tokyo to Norway.

New exhibitor, Loraine Rutt, who is based in London, has been applying to the fair for 13 years and is delighted to be accepted to show her distinctive palm-sized porcelain globes. Her ceramics explore how maps influence our sense of place and belonging, with clay as the tangible connection to the earth’s surface. Relief maps, domestic scale plates and vessels are decorated with cartographically accurate drawings, following the tradition of narrative ceramics.

Her work is in private and public collections worldwide including the Museum of London, the Maritime Museum and The Royal Geographical Society. She will be showing a lustre piece titled Thames water porcelain, which measures 25 x 44 x 2cm and was produced in 2023. It is made from

‘our carbon’, lustre, which is a carbon negative by-product diverted from landfill and the piece charts the catchment area of the Thames with the exterior edges finished with platinum lustre.

Rich Miller is known to many as a judge on the popular Channel 4 ‘Great Pottery Throwdown’. He has worked in ceramics for over 20 years. His current work makes reference to historical design patterns and draws on themes of British colonialism and the way in which the UK has been enriched by an eclectic mix of cultural styles.

The much-celebrated talks programme is free with entry, and this year will feature themed days, curated by leading ceramic experts.

“This is a fabulous fair, where I can find new clay artists: the mix of new and established artists means I never leave empty handed. As ever, buying ceramics directly from a maker is also a very special experience.” Preston Fitzgerald, ceramics collector and curator.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

APRIL 2025

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK

WHAT DID YOU LEARN AT SCHOOL?

Einstein apparently remarked that education is what is left when you have forgotten everything you learned at school. We teachers would like to think this is not so, but Ebbinghaus’ forgetting curve confirms it – information not accessed regularly quickly gets forgotten.

So, once we’ve forgotten quite what the rhyme scheme for a sonnet is, or exactly how the formula for photosynthesis goes, what is left?

Our dispositions are strongly shaped in childhood, when our brains are most disposed to learn. School is therefore an important time for habit-forming, growing core competencies such as collaboration; communication; problem solving.

These are crucial, both to success in adulthood, and to become a fully rounded, flourishing human being. International agencies such as the World Economic Forum, the OECD and UNESCO agree.

At Habs, our purpose is to empower young people to make a profound impact in the world. Students can only do this when these dispositions are in place.

Yet you have probably heard these crucial dispositions described as ‘soft-skills’. Why is this?

Perhaps these skills are deemed ‘soft’ because they’re seen as ‘fuzzy’ and hard to assess. It’s

easier to test knowledge of Spanish verbs than to measure collaboration. This recalls Gert Biesta’s (a prominent educationalist) question: do we value what we measure or measure what we value?

Or is what’s going on with soft skills a little bit more concerning? I wonder whether ‘soft skills’ are being seen as non-academic, or even counter to academia. The term ‘soft skills’ sounds far away from the rigours of the classroom. Yet, these skills are often really challenging to acquire.

Hardly a soft option.

Worse still, is there something gendered going on here? I asked ChatGPT for 50 adjectives associated with femininity. ‘Soft’ ranked fourth. Is it coincidence that ‘soft skills’ are marginalised— or does their association with femininity perhaps contribute to their neglected status?

‘Soft skills’ is a term that needs to go. In this article for the TES, I talk about how teachers can give these skills the importance they deserve and encorporate them into their planning.

‘In an article for the TES*, I talk about how teachers can give these skills the importance they deserve and encorporate them into their planning.’

BEECHWOOD PARK

For parents considering Prep Schools, the question of when to transition to Senior School is a crucial one. Should children move on at 11+, or is there real value in remaining until 13+? At Beechwood Park, a co-educational Prep School near St Albans for ages 3–13, we believe these additional two years can make a significant difference.

Between the ages of 11 and 13, children undergo substantial academic and personal development. Remaining in a supportive Prep School environment during this formative period allows them to mature at their own pace, fostering confidence, resilience, and a well-rounded skill set before stepping into the challenges of Senior School. At Beechwood Park, pupils benefit from a co-educational setting that provides stability and support through the complexities of early adolescence.

One of the key advantages of staying until 13+ is the consistency of a familiar school environment. Smaller class sizes and close relationships with experienced teachers ensure that children receive the individual attention they need. Rather than adapting to a new Senior School at 11+, pupils are given two additional years to develop their independence, refine their academic strengths, and build self-assurance before making

that transition.

Leadership opportunities also play a pivotal role in the 13+ experience. At Beechwood Park, all Year 8 pupils become prefects, with some taking on prestigious roles such as Heads of House or Head of School. These responsibilities instil a sense of independence and accountability, equipping them with essential life skills. Academically, this extra time allows pupils to deepen their learning in a focused environment, free from the early pressures of GCSE preparation. The 13+ milestone is not just about academic achievement but also about personal growth and ensuring pupils move on fully prepared for the next stage of their education. Whilst we strongly advocate for the benefits of the 13+ transition, we also support pupils who move on earlier, guiding them towards the best Senior School for their individual journey. Headmaster Mr Pritchard

British Science Week Spotlight: LEGO and STEM Innovation in Schools

From LEGO play to building kit cars, STEM is evolving in schools today and the future is both exciting and challenging. Yet in a fast-moving technological landscape, employers are increasingly looking for students who can approach STEM as more than simply an exercise in repeating ‘parrotfashion’ what they learned for an exam. The very term STEM suggests something that is more than the sum of its parts – an appreciation of how pupils can apply their learning to the real world, with all of the complexity that real world problem solving requires.

For example, nothing embodies real world problem solving better than LEGO. LEGO enables pupils to design, think, solve and be creative in a group challenge or team setting, reflecting the real world of work. LEGO allows students to model a real-world system and set of controls, giving them the chance to understand and visualise the connection between a theoretical concept and its practical application. This is perhaps why it is becoming so popular in schools like St Margaret’s today.

Likewise, building anything requires students to process a design which is presented to them and to apply this logically to the engineering and construction of a product. A car is a perfect example of this because it is subject to the laws of physics, the economics of mathematics, it must suit the ergonomics of biology, it must be engineered to last and requires technological skill and understanding to come together. This is perhaps why more and more schools are incorporating the building of kit cars into their STEM offering. Most importantly, for students to work on a kit car successfully, it requires them

“Nothing embodies real world problem solving better than LEGO. LEGO enables pupils to design, think, solve and be creative in a group challenge or team setting, reflecting the real world of work”

to design, work as a team, model, communicate, build, problem solve and test products and solutions – building the vital inter-personal and collaborative skills which the STEM industry is crying out for.

Another area being embraced at St Margaret’s is robotics. In our rapidly evolving technological world where products and systems are increasingly automated and less reliant on humans to carry out tasks that we are simply not built to do, humans are relying on robotics to optimise manufacturing processes and services. Pupils need to be aware of the role robotics plays in society today and to start thinking about what it can do for us in the future. Robots require an understanding of the synergies between a mechanical system and a computer system. At St Margaret’s School we really believe in driving pupils’ academic interests through their co-curricular pursuits. As STEM continues to evolve, we should expect to see schools pushing the boundaries for future STEM-related activities. Each generation arriving in secondary schools will do so with a more advanced digital skillset, having grown up in such a rapidly changing technological landscape. The appetite for challenge among pupils in this arena is exciting and gives the pupils themselves real scope to challenge the boundaries of STEM.

Empowering Future Leaders

Preparing Boys and Girls for an Ever-Changing World

We’re living in an ever-changing world, where the skills required to succeed are constantly evolving. The ‘Future of Jobs Report 2025’ by the World Economic Forum highlights a growing demand for leadership, empathy, resilience and analytical thinking as essential skills in the future jobs market.

At Aldwickbury, we embrace change and remain at the forefront to ensure pupils are fully prepared for the future. Whilst academic success remains central to our education, we place great emphasis on our Future Thinking Curriculum to engage curiosity and problem-solving abilities. This includes sparking a passion for innovation through coding and robotics to instilling a sense of adventure with outdoor learning experiences. Beyond this, daily life continues to nurture fundamental skills needed for the future.

We encourage pupils to lead with confidence, whether on stage, in the classroom, or on the

sports field. Resilience is instilled through challenges that promote perseverance, whilst analytical thinking is sharpened through strategic activities such as chess and problem-solving tasks.

In recognition of our forward-thinking vision, we’re proud to have been named the UK’s ‘Independent Boys’ School of the Year’ 2024. We’re excited for girls to join Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 from September 2025 to also benefit from our holistic education.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

British designers re-imagined florals, androgynous silhouettes and showcased contemporary takes on traditional femininity.

Here are five London Fashion Week trends we might all be wearing this year.

PILLBOX HATS

Emilia Wickstead’s 1960s collection inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film, The Birds (1963), brought back an accessory that has already been slowly creeping onto the fashion scene since Copenhagen Fashion Week.

That is, of course, the pillbox hat.

Beginning as a form of military headgear, the pillbox hat was popularised by U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who was famed for her signature block-colour hats that matched her outfits.

Kennedy was wearing a pink pillbox hat to match her Chanel suit on the day her husband, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in 1963.

While multiple retro tropes graced the

Upcoming trends from London Fashion Week

From retro motifs to modern twists: London Fashion Week provided a smorgasbord of style inspiration for 2025.

runway this season – from Burberry’s Eighties blouson bomber jackets to Chet Lo’s Noughties hair crimping –the most memorable fashion motif was certainly the revival of the pillbox hat.

EIGHTIES’ SILHOUETTES

Broad shoulders, bold prints, nipped-in waists and quaffed hair dominated the runway this season.

From Richard Quinn’s blouson blouses to Paul Costelloe’s full-waisted belts and S.S. Daley’s quaffed hair –it seems the 1980s is making a comeback in one way or another.

Many collections looked to archetypes of British pop culture this season, taking inspiration from musicians such

as The Smiths and Siouxsie Sioux.

“This season, we started with a desire to investigate the archetypes that carved out the idea of a very British wardrobe,” designer Steven Stokey-Daley told Vogue, “so taking the donkey jacket or the duffle coat or the trench coat and creating our very core everyday version of those.”

BOOKS AS ACCESSORIES

As observed at Erdem and JW Anderson’s collections last September, designers once again proved that books are the most sophisticated accessory.

Emilia Wickstead’s autumn/winter 2025 collection featured retro newspapers as clutches, which is a new take on the modern paperback as an outfit accompaniment.

Books and literature is increasingly playing a starring role in fashion discourse, as more celebrities are meaningfully photographed with their current reads as a status symbol and a small window into their personal interests.

At the spring/summer 2025 London Fashion Week, designer Erdem Moralioglu looked to book The Well Of Loneliness, a lesbian novel published in 1928 which was swiftly banned in England for the next two decades.

He used it as inspiration for his clothes that featured impeccable masculine tailoring of the 1920s, combined with the designer’s signature

ultra-feminine dresses.

It seems we may be swapping out our totes for book bags this coming season.

FAUX-FUR ACCENTS

Simone Rocha and Burberry were among the designers showcasing faux fur accents this season. While the ‘mob wife’ aesthetic brought back the extravagant fur coat last year, subtler trims were observed on this season’s runway, with lined leather jackets and faux fur stoles.

At Simone Rocha’s show, the Irish designer presented faux-fur coats sliced to ribbons halfway up from their hemlines – a gesture repeated across the collection.

Perhaps we’ll see deconstructed fur cropping up on the high street later this year.

CROPPED TROUSERS

Culottes, cropped trousers and breeches were another key trend spotted on the runways of Chet Lo, Bora Aksu and Conner Ives.

While Chloe’s spring/summer 2025 runway took the fashion world by storm with her boho lace pantaloons, it seems the cropped trouser trend isn’t just for summer.

Wool breeches, billowing culottes and crops graced both the runways and front rows this season.

Often paired with high riding boots – another trend that has permeated from last season – this season’s baggy cropped trousers evoked a blend of old-school country shooting attire and Noughties capri pants.

Vegan beauty

What is vegan beauty?

Just like a vegan diet, vegan beauty includes products that avoid anything that has been tested on animals or contains animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax, gelatine, honey or squalene.

“[Vegan] products are often created with crueltyfree principles, supporting ethical practices in the beauty industry,” explains co-founder of Odylique, Abi Weeds. “Vegan skincare works for all skin types [and] is packed with natural moisturisers, such as aloe vera and shea butter for hydration, alongside calming ingredients like tea tree oil and chamomile which reduce inflammation,” explains BEAUTY BAY‘s beauty expert Grace Ferns.

“Mature skin also benefits from antioxidant-rich formulas found in vegan products, which also help to combat ageing,” she claims.

How to tell if a product is vegan

Identifying whether your beauty product is vegan or not is quick and easy. The Vegan Society suggest looking out for a logo certification, such as the vegan trademark, which guarantees the product is free from animal ingredients and has not been tested on animals. These trademarks can look different, whether they come from Vegan Action, Cruelty Free International, PETA or Choose Cruelty Free. Familiarising yourself with these logos will help your determine which products are vegan and non-vegan.

EASIEST VEGAN SWAPS TO MAKE IN YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE

If you feel that you ought to try and make some vegan beauty swaps but don’t know where to start, the experts have given their top recommendations for products they believe work better than animalderived products.

Is vegan skincare a good substitute for mainstream products?

When it comes to swapping more mainstream products for vegan beauty, some claim the benefits outweigh the cons. According to Weeds: “Vegan beauty products often contain fewer synthetic chemicals and harsh irritants, resulting in kinder formulations for the skin.” “Vegan skincare products are usually rich in antioxidants, botanicals and vitamins. They’re better for animals and the planet, and are also less likely to irritate the skin,” maintains skincare expert and founder of Update Aesthetics Clinics, Nina Prisk. “This is because some of the popular skincare ingredients that are animal-derived can be heavier and more likely to clog pores.”

Oxona Health FOCUS: ACNE

WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

Acne arises from a combination of factors that interact with one another. Firstly, the activity of sebaceous (grease) glands plays a crucial role. When these glands become active during the teenage years, they produce significantly more sebum, leading to clogged pores.

Secondly, a common skin bacterium that thrives in greasy environments, Cutibacterium Acnes, triggers the skin’s immune system to respond by forming pus-filled spots.

The hormonal fluctuations in girls also contribute to premenstrual worsening of acne.

Other contributing factors include a genetic predisposition, as acne often runs in families. Finally, some medications can induce acne. For instance, the progesterone-only contraceptive pill (the mini pill) and some combined oral contraceptives can exacerbate acne.

MYTH BUSTING

Diet rarely contributes to acne. While maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is important, evidence remains weak regarding the impact of chocolate, dairy, refined sugars, and processed foods on acne. However, some studies have shown a link between stress and acne, so managing stress levels may be beneficial.

“Some

studies have shown a link between stress and acne, so managing stress levels may be beneficial”

Another common misconception is that aggressively treating the skin with harsh products will alleviate acne. However, this approach can backfire, as the skin may respond by producing more sebum, worsening the condition. It is essential to treat the skin gently and avoid excessive use of scrubs and harsh over-the-counter treatments.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACNE LESIONS

There are various types of acne lesions, the most common being whiteheads and blackheads. Whiteheads occur when hair follicles become clogged and remain closed at the skin’s surface. Conversely, blackheads are open to the skin’s surface, and their contents oxidize, giving them a black appearance.

If whiteheads become inflamed, they turn into papules, and when inflammation and pus increase, they become pustules. As these lesions combine and grow larger, they form nodules and cysts.

TREATMENTS

There is a wide range of topical treatments available over the counter that can effectively manage acne. These include topical niacinamide, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinols. Maintaining a good skincare routine can also

help prevent the need for prescribed medications in some cases. Gentle cleansers and oil-free moisturizers are essential. Expensive does not necessarily mean better—cost-effective products such as CeraVe Blemish Control Cleanser, The INKEY List Salicylic Acid Cleanser, and La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo+M Anti-Breakout Corrective Gel Moisturizer are excellent choices.

For more severe acne, prescription treatments are required. In straightforward cases, topical combination products can be highly effective. Oral antibiotics may be added for a period to calm flareups, ideally for no more than a few months. Some brands of the oral combined contraceptive pill can be beneficial for women, and spironolactone is an excellent option in selected cases.

Recently, a combination of red and blue light intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy has shown promise in improving mild to moderate acne. However, this treatment option is not yet widely available.

For very severe or persistent cases, the most effective treatment is isotretinoin (also known as Accutane or Roaccutane). It can only be prescribed by dermatology specialists but can be transformative. Isotretinoin is the only drug known to cure acne rather than just manage symptoms. Contrary to much of the misinformation spread on social media, isotretinoin is a safe and effective

treatment when prescribed correctly. Waiting lists for isotretinoin on the NHS can be over 12 months, leading many patients to seek private treatment. At Oxona, our experienced doctors can start patients on isotretinoin within a week. The Oxona team understand the devasting impact acne can have on young people’s self esteem and happiness. We aim to treat patients swiftly and at a fair price.

Styling a neck scarf this spring

This must-have spring essential will elevate any outfit. By

As spring rapidly approaches, nothing says effortless chic quite like a silk neck scarf.

From adding a pop of colour to laid-back daytime outfits to elevating elegant evening attire, fashionforward celebrities such as Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and Hailey Bieber have all been snapped rocking this versatile accessory.

“Neck scarves have always been a hallmark of timeless elegance,” says fashion expert and celebrity stylist Oriona Robb. “Whether tied effortlessly around the neck or draped over a designer bag, a scarf adds a touch of quiet luxury to any outfit.”

And silk pastel-coloured or monogram-print neck scarves are set to be all the rage this spring.

“This spring, silk remains the ultimate choice for its lightweight feel and natural sheen, though cotton and linen scarves are also gaining popularity for a more relaxed, breathable effect,” says Robb. “In terms of design, soft pastels such as baby blue, blush pink, and lavender bring a fresh seasonal glow, while floral and botanical prints nod to the beauty of nature.

“Classic monograms and logo prints also continue to hold their place, offering a refined, heritageinspired touch that never goes out of style.”

French

neck tie

A neck scarf is a classic staple in any stylish Parisian wardrobe.

As a shawl

When a light breeze in spring calls for just a bit more coverage, fold a big square silk scarf into a triangle, place it on your shoulders with the pointy end at your back and loosely tie it at the front. Style this with a flowy maxi dress to make your evening looks even more luxurious.

“One of the easiest and most elegant ways to wear a scarf is the French neck tie,” says Robb. “Simply fold the scarf into a triangle, roll it up, and knot it neatly around the neck for a polished yet effortless look.” Styling it with timeless basics allows the scarf – whether featuring a splash of colour or a striking print – to take centre stage.

“This style pairs beautifully with a crisp white shirt and high-waisted denim, embodying that Parisian nonchalance,” says Robb.

Old money headscarf

Iconic figures like Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy were the pioneers of the old money headscarf trend, but more recently Gen Z pop stars, including Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish, have also embraced this look, showing that this trend is here to stay. “Wrapping the scarf around the head and tying it under the chin or at the nape creates an instantly sophisticated aesthetic, especially when paired with oversized sunglasses and a structured handbag,” recommends Robb. This tip instantly makes any ensemble look more expensive.

Around your hair

Add some flair to your hairstyle by securing a patterned silk scarf to your ponytail, or wear it as a bandana with your hair down. “For a more laidback vibe, the relaxed bandana style is perfect,” says Robb. “Folding a scarf into a triangle and tying it around the head brings a vintage, bohemian feel that works well for beach days or weekend escapes.”

Around a baseball cap

Hailey Bieber gave a masterclass in cool by sharing a photo of herself wearing a leopard print scarf tied around a red baseball cap. To recreate this It Girl look, simply fold the scarf into a long, narrow strip, wrap it around the base of the cap, and tie the ends in a knot or bow, adjusting for the perfect fit and vibe.

THE BEST WAYS TO STYLE STRIPES THIS SEASON

Tried-and-true outfit formulas to elevate stripes this spring… By Lara Owen

As the ‘fisherman aesthetic’ was predicted to be one of 2025’s biggest trends, styling stripes is set to take a new approach this season. With spring’s unpredictable weather, sticking to a tried-and-true formula becomes routine.

But having a formula doesn’t mean boring. Whether you’re sporting navy-and-white-striped Breton tees or taking inspiration from Gucci’s sorbet-coloured cardigans, fashion experts go through the best way to style stripes this season.

Invest in the staples

neck, barrel jeans and shades – or opt for a more preppy and polished look with a buttoned cardigan and pleated skirt.

Pair with denim

There’s no greater match than stripes and denim, but this doesn’t mean navy white and blue. Colourful stripes with ecru jeans –or muted stripes with khaki denim are great ways to mix print and texture. If you’re looking for something lighter than denim, then linen and cream tones are a perfect pairing. “A striped top with cream linen trousers or a beige blazer brings a chic and polished touch,” says Laudort. “Otherwise for an edgier look, stripes contrast beautifully with the richness of a suede skirt or leather boots, balancing casual and luxe.”

Don’t dismiss accessories

While some striped trends come and go, investing in staple stripes is essential for elevating your outfits year after year. The classic navy and white combo is sported time and again by the likes of Sienna Miller and the Princess of Wales. While a slim fit is timeless, more oversized styles are in this season, thanks to the ‘fisherman aesthetic’.

“This influence of ‘fisherman style’ means stripes are less polished and more effortless [this season], often paired with oversized silhouettes, half-tucked tops, and relaxed tailoring,” explains fashion expert and celebrity stylist Oriona Robb.

Go big with colour

This season, designers are experimenting with a more maximalist approach to stripes, combining juxtaposing yellows and blues to statement pieces.

“Colour-wise, it’s about playful combos,” says Robb. While nautical navy and whites are still in the mix, “powder blue and butter yellow are big this season” explains fashion expert Karine Laudort, “along with sage green and cream. Red and cream stripes are also having a major moment,” says Robb, “adding a Parisian-chic touch to any outfit.” You can channel this with a roll

Suede continues to be big this season, and a slouchy suede bag or boat shoes can elevate any striped tee and denim jean combo. If you’re wanting to lean into colourful stripes, swap your white trainers out for metallic pumps to make the look that much more interesting. If you’re keeping it really simple with a one-and-done stripe – don’t forget to play up the jewels with a chunky necklace and matching earrings.

Unapologetically dramatic, a new wall mural from family-run design house By Haleys offers a new take on floral wall coverings.

With tall tree trunks stretching skywards and luscious foliage bursting from every angle, Arbour is bold and brave.

It depicts a striking forest scene, complete with fast-flowing stream, that offers an escape from reality. Its canopy of leaves and branches weave a natural ceiling and envelopes homeowners in a fantasy woodland adventure.

Richard Haley, Creative Director of By Haleys, said: “With Arbour, we wanted to create a mural that showed both the opulence and majesty of the natural world in a very theatrical way.

“Botanical and nature-inspired wallcoverings can be quite subtle, but we wanted to create something that was bold and brooding.

“Colour is key, and we carefully curated a palette that transitions seamlessly from fiery warmth to cool serenity, creating a dynamic tapestry that

captures the essence of a forest bathed in everchanging light.”

The wall mural was brought to life by Design Director Geoff Haley, an artist with more than 40 years’ experience in the interiors’ industry.

“With Arbour, we wanted to create a mural that showed both the opulence and majesty of the natural world in a very theatrical way.

Botanical and natureinspired wallcoverings can be quite subtle, but we wanted to create something that was bold and brooding”

It was inspired by the landscapes of West Yorkshire and hand-painted by Geoff, and the mural depicts every paint stroke adding a unique textural appearance.

Arbour is available now from By Haleys in three colourways: Cerulean, Moss and Celadon and three different finishes: Premier Vinyl, Grasscloth and Matte Uncoated. byhaleys.com

The Astoria Collection

Discover the contemporary wallpaper collection that channels timeless style available now at Beautiful Walls

Colour and pattern combine with traditional charm and contemporary styling in a new wallpaper range available at Beautiful Walls.

The Astoria Collection by Ronald Redding is the newest addition to the family-run retailer’s everexpanding wallpaper portfolio and it is a beauty.

Bursting with pattern, the 12-strong collection has it all. From the subtle geometrics of Diamond Legacy through to the flamboyant florals of Monroe, it is a collection that pays homage to traditional wallpaper design while offering a nod to 21st century interior styling.

Tim Dixon, Managing Director of Beautiful Walls, said: “Astoria is a timeless collection that manages to bring a touch of heritage while remaining fiercely modern.

“It channels the past while exuding a contemporary charm that will transform the look and feel of spaces where it is used.

“It offers colour, pattern and a style that never dates – it really is a triple threat.”

Highlights include Floral Lace, which weaves wildflowers with prairie grass. This elegant design is available in five colourways and brings a touch

of whimsy to interiors.

For a more dramatic look, Regent is a nononsense herringbone design that adds texture as well as pattern.

Like Monroe, Peacock Estate is a design bursting with colour and florals. It also features regal peacocks and lively sparrows that perch amidst branches packed with berries and blooms.

Tim added: “Astoria is a celebration of modern wallpaper design.” beautifulwalls.co.uk
