JESUS’ CULTURE DEVELOPMENT We spent February looking at several cultures Jesus built into his early following. Culture is a subsurface structure that shapes how we live and act. The Jesus movement introduced a fresh Culture of Grace—typified by the father in the parable of the lost son and modeled by Jesus in real life moments of grace. Jesus also built an expectation in his disciples to journey forward, to grow, or to be transformed by that grace. That culture of journeying forward was what John Wesley called “sanctifying grace.” The culture of covenant was enhanced by Jesus as he launched the New Covenant where his Father’s will and kingdom are the preferred outcomes as in the prayer—“thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Our final look at the cultures Jesus SENIOR PASTOR was building was a “counter culture” culture as raig urry he prepared his disciples for the push back of persecution that would come when they lived out their faith and following. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake…”

As we approach Lent and Easter, we have the opportunity to do more than just recount the stories of Jesus’ ministry. We have the opportunity to live into the cultures he shaped then—the cultures he is shaping now. This is part of our distinctiveness as the Church in our modern world and as United Methodists. See you in worship! Pastor Craig

CARE MINISTRIES

Shera Atkinson Minister of Spiritual Formation and Congregational Care

First LBK has a long tradition of providing care for those both outside our church through our missions ministry and inside the church through the Care Ministries. Some of the ministries are new, but many have been meeting needs for decades. The mission statement of our Care Ministries is: “In the Wesleyan tradition of doing all the good we can, by all the means we can, in all the places we can, to all the people we can, our care ministry seeks to engage in ministries that nurture and care for people in the midst of transition or difficulties in order to share the love and the grace of Jesus Christ. Each of the ministries below are in need of new volunteers and we invite you to visit and try on a new ministry to see if it is a fit for you. NEW MINISTRIES: CANCER COMPANIONS: Cancer companions is a support ministry for cancer patients and their caregivers providing prayer, support groups and practical help. To

volunteer, get more information or sign up for a companion please contact Leslie Moss, lesliemossnm@gmail.com. TECHNOLOGY MINISTRY: Recently, an older member of our church was given a device that attached to her TV in order to aid her ability to hear the programs. One of our members took 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon to set the system up. While the installation was not complicated, the impact on our older member was invaluable and immeasurable. After hearing of this act of service, the Care ministry is exploring a new ministry that will help our less technologically knowledgeable members with issues regarding their TV, Phones, and Computers. If you are interested in helping our members with minor technological issues such as teaching them to use their smart phone or email, or helping with their remotes please contact Shera Atkinson, 763-4607 ext 240 or satkinson@fumc.com.

The shawls serve as a comforting reminder that they are cared for by both God and the members of FUMC who are praying for them in their time of discomfort. TREASURED TIMES Treasured Times assist those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. This ministry provides a safe and caring place in which participants may enjoy socialization outside of the home. It also provides a weekly respite for caregivers and enables them to care for themselves. For more information please contact Challa Goedeke, cjgoedeke@hotmail. com.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC Organ Project Update – February 2020

Eve service, Keith and his team embarked to install the steel frames in the two organ chambers without a break even on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

As of February 6, we are thrilled to inform everyone that the installation of both north and south organ pipe chambers are complete. However, the project is not yet finished. The two big facades facing the congregation and two big facades facing the chancel loft need to be installed before the main chancel organ console (Dr. Gordon McMillan Memorial Organ Console) can be moved and connected. As soon as we heard the last note of the postlude of the 9 p.m. Christmas

The Letourneau team arrived here on January 6 and started installing the parts and pipes of the Swell, Great and the Pedal division in the north chamber. Then, on January 28, the trailer containing the parts of the Choir, Solo, Great and Pedal division in the south chamber arrived, and they have been installed. According to our plan, the facades were supposed to be here to be installed the week of February 10. However, we have found out that some delays happen in manufacturing the facades at the Letourneau shop. What we know for sure about the organ

project is that the new chancel organ will be ready sometime in May. It is not an exaggeration to say we expect there to be the scaffolding in place in March and part of April, and the choir will still present music in the balcony until the chancel console is fully operable after voicing and tuning in May. We are sorry that we do not know the exact completion date, just like any other construction project. Good news is that God is with us, we have a house of worship, and there is an organ in the balcony to facilitate our traditional worship service. We greatly appreciate your patience during the construction process. – Dr. Seung-Won Cho Director of Traditional Music Ministries

Organist Announcment The FUMC Traditional Music Ministry is delighted to announce that we have hired an Assistant Director of Traditional Music Ministries and Organist. Matt Johnston from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, he will start June 1, more details about Matt when he arrives in late May. The considerably lengthy search for David Warren’s replacement that started in May 2019 is finally over and we are grateful for God’s providence! – Dr. Seung-Won Cho Director of Traditional Music Ministries March 2020 | The Window
