MOVED BY JESUS. LOVING PEOPLE. SERVING ALL.

Our mission is to create a grace-filled environment in which Christ transforms lives.

EARLY SERVICE!

‘Tis the season for new beginnings! That’s right, it’s the New Year, and with a new year brings new opportunities. Maybe this year you’ve decided to take up a new hobby, or to accomplish a longdesired goal. For some SENIOR PASTOR of us, we simply desire Todd Salzwedel for things to get back to the way they were from some point in the past… say, pre-pandemic? When my family and I first got to First, we joined a vibrant and historic body of disciples engaged in active service to the community. Some classes and groups had begun meeting, and we were starting to imagine what it might look like as we emerged from the most jarring event that has happened to our world in some time. In many ways, our church was on its way to discovering what our new normal would be. Worship has been central to our church, just as it has been for the church in general for two millennia. In our case, in-person worship was already underway when my family and I arrived. Obviously, we continued with the livestream option for folks that did not yet feel comfortable returning to a larger group setting. We’ve continued that practice by welcoming people through our virtual worship and are working on ways to expand that. The one service that has not yet returned, though, is the 8:30 a.m. service. When we first arrived, there were a substantial number of folks who attended that service who

were not yet prepared to return to in-person worship, as I understood it. Further, with the uncertainty of the restrictions coupled with a changing pastoral position, we wanted to build momentum. And momentum did build! Many of the folks who previously attended the 8:30 service began attending other available options. We began exploring the possibility of restarting the 8:30 service in the second quarter of 2021. In fact, we aspired to restart the service in September. But due to some personnel changes and being careful to not overburden an already taxed staff, we had to put those plans on hold. But 2022 is a season of new beginnings! So, I am happy to announce that we are currently working to restart the early service on the first Sunday of February! I and a few others are currently looking at ways to breathe some new life into the service so I can’t quite share those details yet, but we are excited to resurrect the early service and hopefully welcome some folks back to church that have opted not to return yet! It might be that we shorten the service slightly to begin at 8:45 and end at 9:30. The service might have a slightly different order than it did previously. Who knows! Regardless, I hope and pray that this is a new beginning for a service that has meant so much to generations of the First family! Please keep the start of this service in your prayers! Invite those you haven’t seen in a while back to worship and invite some new friends as well! We have so many great options for worship and fellowship at our church and we want to share that with JANUARY 2022 | THE WINDOW 1 everyone we meet! (continued on page 2)

Dear church family, Each year in chapel, I choose a word for the year. Last Year’s word was “Discipleship”. This year’s word is also discipleship. As Christians, we are called to both live as disciples and make disciples. But discipleship has many facets, for example, it is both relational and incarnational. Shera Atkinson These two constructs do not exist Minister of Spiritual in opposition, but instead are Formation and Congregational Care facets on the path. Scripture calls us to maturity in Christ and with all people. January 30, Todd, Bailey and I will be introducing a discipleship pathway that we hope will help guide each of us into the maturity and wholeness to which Jesus refers. Each ministry, study, mission, and fellowship will be planned with the goal of assisting each person grow and mature in their discipleship. Looking ahead in 2022, a new Sunday school class will begin on February 6. The class will be called the Connections

class and will be led by Todd, Bailey, and myself, as well as several other seasoned teachers. It will cover various topics and will allow people to visit for the topics they are interested in and then return to their own class. Further, it will serve as an entryway to visitors to help us get to know them and assist in finding a permanent class. The men’s ministry will seek to start several men’s growth groups, offer opportunities for fellowship and will bring Marcus “Goodie” Goodloe back to for an event that will coincide with the Wellborn Payne Christian Life Conference. The prayer ministry will unveil new opportunities to grow in your prayer life on the National Day of Prayer. Women’s bible studies will continue and the women’s ministry will offer three retreats next year. As a way for each person to invest in their own discipleship growth, Individualized Spiritual Formation plans will be offered. These are just a few of the opportunities to look forward to throughout the year. My prayer is that you will be blessed beyond measure throughout this year and that each of us will live to the glory of God alone! Soli Deo Gloria, Shera
